RNLI installs weatherproof access control system

At the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) lifeboat station in Sennen Cove, Lands End, exposure to the harsh coastal conditions had taken its toll on the site’s entry system. An automatic barrier that was relied on to allow crew and visitors access to the site – and to prevent unauthorised entry – had to be removed due to rust that had built up over time. Instead, the RNLI had to rely on traffic cones to control access while waiting for a more practical option.

Local installer, South West Garage Doors (SWGD), found a solution that would not only provide the level of access control required by the RNLI, but that would withstand the challenging weather conditions in this part of Cornwall. In an exposed coastal location such as Sennen Cove, rust caused by the coastal environment can be a major issue when it comes to equipment longevity. The new solution would have to perform reliably throughout the year and the preference was for an automatic barrier.

SWGD installed a BFT Automation Maxima Ultra 36 barrier in stainless steel finish, which provides weather-resistance, minimising the damage caused by saltwater spray. The stainless steel casing ensures that the electromechanical barrier mechanism is protected from the elements. In addition, the Maxima Ultra 36 can provide a drive-through gap of up to six metres –the ideal size for cars, small vans and lifeboat trailers to pass through.

Kevin Spinks, Managing Director of BFT Automation, said: “We are pleased that a fantastic organisation like the RNLI has put their trust in one of our products.”

Evacuation alert system for new residential block

C-TEC’s evacuation alert system, EVAC-ALERT, has been specified for a new residential building in London. Located in the Elephant and Castle area of London, Joyce Newman House is an eightstorey block of 40 living spaces commissioned by Leathermarket JMB.

Specified and supplied by Churches Fire & Security working alongside Blu Electrical Installations, EVAC-ALERT has been designed to comply with BS 8629, which recommends evacuation alert systems be installed in all new blocks of flats over 18 metres to assist the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) in evacuating part or all of a building in an emergency.

The system consists of a two-loop control panel connected to single and multi-way interface units, self-testing sounders and visual indicators. With manual controls to allow firefighters to operate the evacuation alert devices located inside flats on a zone by zone or floor by floor basis, the panel is stored in a secure vandal resistant cabinet which can only be accessed by the FRS using a special copyprotected key.

David Collins, Project Manager at Churches Fire & Security, said: “Evacuation alert systems ensure firefighters can alert occupants in a building of the need to evacuate if a fire gets out of control. The EVAC-ALERT system we’ve specified provides peace of mind for residents and, crucially, also demonstrates that building management have taken every precaution possible to protect the people residing in the property. Our client is delighted with the system.”

Along with the new cameras and VMS, the team also installed new CCTV client computers and improved screens in the Frenchay Campus control room

Securing three campuses 24/7 with video surveillance

The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) serves over 30,000 students from 140 countries. It has over 3,200 staff, and is one of the largest universities in the UK.

Over the past five years the university has invested over £300 million in its facilities and it needed a video surveillance system that matched. It previously had a CCTV system over a decade old, which wasn't fully operational and regularly had downtime issues. The UWE Facilities-Estates team looked for a solution that would help maintain operational security in order to keep students and staff safe 24/7, that could scale across its different campuses, and that would bring video surveillance up to date with modern technology.

The instruction to install the new video surveillance system, which features cameras and the WAVE video management system (VMS) sourced from Hanwha Techwin, was awarded to KSCM, the university’s incumbent CCTV maintenance contractor.

Keyton Matthews, Director & Owner, of KSCM said: “The new Wisenet cameras and WAVE VMS have equipped the university with much improved quality footage, increased reliability and uptime, as well as future-proofing for the university’s future plans and needs.”

The team carried out a phased upgrade of its existing video surveillance system so having the ability to support both the legacy cameras and new Wisenet cameras on a single WAVE VMS was a significant operational benefit. Three-quarters of the university’s CCTV cameras (around 150+ devices) have now been replaced, along with all recorders and the VMS. The Wisenet solution was also chosen as it had improved quality cameras and footage, with greater cost-effectiveness when it came to the devices’ and VMS’ lifecycle.

Along with the new cameras and VMS, the team also installed new CCTV client computers and improved screens in the Frenchay Campus control room.

When an event occurs, the UWE team can look back through video footage to understand important contextual information like when the event occurred, who was present near the event, and any damage that occurred. They can also closely monitor any higher risk areas like campus entrances and receptions, and see who is entering and exiting the university property.

UWE has also invested and recently upgraded its automatic number plate recognition system (ALPR/ANPR) and cameras to more accurately identify the vehicles entering and exiting its sites. The system has been upgraded to detect not only the number plate, but also the make, model, and colour of vehicles to offer even more situational awareness.

Trestle Theatre upgrades access control system

Amthal has upgraded security for Trestle Theatre with an access control system incorporating networked control, software and proximity ID cards, all without compromising on the historic ambience of the chapel building.

The St Albans based Trestle Theatre runs out of Trestle Arts Base, a 100 year old converted chapel, housing an 84 (end on) to 120 (3 sides) seat flexible theatre space, rehearsal studio, cafe, offices and a meeting/function room.

Following an initial site survey, Amthal installed a Paxton access control system incorporating an IP networked control solution, software and proximity ID cards to offer ultimate door entry and controlled access management.

David WIlliamson, Sales Manager at Amthal said: “Trestle Theatre was clear in a desire to partner with a company and develop a long professional relationship to maintain the high level of protection required at their premises, with ongoing streams of staff and visitors at all times of day and night.

“Trestle Theatre is also a great example of how the very latest access control solution that can be installed seamlessly in such a beautifully converted chapel building, with no effect to the architectural design. “
