The security apprenticeship, training and technology event of 2022

PSI’s Next Generation event in association with Skills for Security and IFSEC kicks off on 22nd June at Luton Hoo with a comprehensive seminar programme aimed at security systems installers and developing skills in the sector as well as a table-top exhibition of new innovations

The agenda devised by Skills for Security includes presentations and interactive discussions to promote and advise installation companies on apprenticeships, training and good business practise when it comes to the latest technologies.

Covering issues such as recruitment, staff retention, training, IT and more the programme also includes an open forum involving NSI, SSAIB and the BSIA to discuss various topics relating to the future development of the sector.

In each session, installers will be encouraged to interact and engage with the presentations and are welcome to ask any questions or request any clarification of the subject matter.

Here is a breakdown of what is in store for attendees during the day:

Grow your workforce with apprentices

Darrell Gilmour & David Scott of Skills for Security Simon Banks (BSIA Chairman) hosts a deep dive into the fire and security sector with a look at total employment numbers, growth over the years, other events that have impacted on the sectors. The challenges of the sector including the skills gap and crisis, why this has occurred and how bad will it actually get will be a major focus of this presentation along with the benefits and requirements of apprenticeships. Do you know what apprenticeships are available to your business and what the course objectives and accredited levels are? In this session installers will find out how much is it going to cost their business and what government incentives are available.

Installer forum

With NSI, SSAIB and BSIA Chaired by Simon Banks, this panel discussion will focus on several key issues including All-IP, ECHO and Standards before opening up the floor for installers to raise questions about engaging with certification schemes, sector future proofing, audits, general business solutions etc. Covering issues such as recruitment, staff retention, training, IT and more the programme also includes an open forum involving NSI, SSAIB and the BSIA to discuss various topics relating to the future development of the sector

Cyber security

Cary Hendricks & Keven Anderson of ID Cyber Solutions Hosted by James Gribben of the BSIA, the session will focus on cyber related concerns. Using live demos, Cyber Essentials experts will outline how organisations can avoid weaknesses and address vulnerabilities before criminal hackers have the chance to exploit them. In this presentation the five most common hacks and the five controls every business needs to stay safe will be revealed.

Developing and retaining staff

George Zitko of Zitko Group Simon Banks chairs the session covering one of the most important issues facing the security sector today – recruitment. This section will discuss why people leave the industry and the skills shortage, plus recruitment planning, attracting the right people and developing the most efficient application and selection process. The benefits of widening the talent pool and retaining engineers will also be key elements of this presentation.

This will be followed by a Round Table discussion on retaining engineers covering SWOT analysis of the workforce, the business and teams in terms of positive retention activity. The discussion will move on to strategies for onboarding and orientation, mentorship programmes, perks and compensation packages and then developing a suitable organisation retention strategy.

AI and the Cloud – the route forward

Pauline Norstrom of Anekanta Consulting, David Barr of Eagle Eye Networks and Chris Carter Brennan of Conxtd Chaired by James Gribben, the final presentation of the day is divided into three parts. First-off is an overview of the new technology expectations driven by the user, that every installer must be aware of, specifically concerning AI systems, the importance of these changes and how they create opportunities. The second piece will look at the principles of cloud and how the security sector fares against other emerging AI sectors and the challenges that the security sector has in embracing AI and cloud. Finally this session will cover the systems that are using cloud and how installers can be more knowledgeable enabling them to support their clients more effectively in decision making.
