ELECTRA GLIDE® ULTRA CLASSIC™ First introduced in 1965, this bike has become the standard that all other long haul tourers seek to aspire to. It’s the benchmark for any serious continentcrossing rider who wants the finest rider experience. And last year’s exhaustive, information gathering Project Rushmore has played a large part in its success. We muscled up the engine, gave it one-touch luggage controls, a roomier Tour-Pak™, large enough for 2 full-face helmets and injection-moulded hard saddlebags. We gave it a four speaker 100 watt Boom!™ Box 4.3 audio system, ergonomically reorganized controls and a fuel tank that holds over 22.7 litres. Is this the epitome of the Harley® tourer? Yeah, every second of every day.

ULTRA LIMITED NEW ULTRA LIMITED LOW So why shouldn’t someone of a shorter stature be able to enjoy the fully loaded benefits of our Ultra Limited? No reason at all, not now. The Ultra Limited Low is all new for 2015 and another great asset to have come out of Project Rushmore. We’ve dropped the suspension, pulled back the handlebars, lowered the seat, put on an extended reach side stand, re-positioned the passenger footpegs, even reduced the diameter of the handgrips. And frankly (even though we say so ourselves) what we’ve achieved is pretty ingenious because whilst the bike will now suit the shorter rider, until you sit on it, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. As you can see.

‘Fully Loaded’ is probably the shortest description we could give this premium tourer but somehow we feel you’d appreciate a little more, so here goes. It has our largest 1690cc High Output Twin Cam engine with a smooth, 6-Speed Cruise Drive™ transmission, electronic cruise control and electronically linked ABS braking system. It also has a re-crafted Batwing fairing (to drastically reduce head buffeting) a 6.5GT touchscreen infotainment system with intuitive hand controls, chrome impeller cast aluminium wheels, premium Tour-Pak™, premium saddlebags and yeah, you guessed it, way more besides. Because as its name suggests the Ultra Limited, really does have it all.

SCREW THE CAR let’s ride

It was a period that saw mass production of the automobile but this only spurred Harley and Davidson on to bigger and better things for H-D® motorcycles. In the States people wanted to see their country and so began the golden age of touring.

WERLE’S

flying squad Theodore Werle was the leading member of a group of brave individuals who sought to fight the ‘White Plague’, Tuberculosis. Impressed by his team’s devotion, Arthur Davidson gave them a squadron of Harley® motorcycles which would prove to be a key weapon in their fight. But as well as allowing Theodore and his team to get about quickly, because these bikes were being tested to the limit, it also showed Arthur where improvements could be made to them. Amongst the many innovations was the ‘two speed rear hub’, the first multiple gear system on a Harley. And Werle himself became quite expert at the art and science of motorcycle touring. By default, he was a tester of Harley’s very first touring accessories, including luggage racks and saddlebags. He clearly understood issues such as weight distribution and changing the vehicle’s centre of gravity. In 1915, Harley-Davidson published a guide authored by Werle entitled Camping Hints When Touring With a Motorcycle. This year we can celebrate a hundred years of touring expertise. Theodore would be delighted.

Back in 1903 when Mr William Harley and Mr Arthur Davidson first began their work in a small shed, they could only have hoped that their innovative thinking would be carried on for many years to come. Happily, as the last 112 years can prove, their hopes have been realised with touring being at the very heart of it all.

Even though the infamous stock market crash threatened to take everyone down with it, an aggressive, national road building scheme that began in ’35 allowed H-D to show through print ads and Enthusiast Magazine articles, what it was like to see their country from the saddle of a Harley. And people embraced it in their droves. We issued free road maps and showed off the scenic destinations waiting to be discovered. By the end of the decade, H-D and the whole concept of motorcycling was stronger than ever.

helluva ride 1980 and the all new FLT Tour Glide® arrives with a 5-speed transmission, oil bath-enclosed rear chain, a new frame and a frame-mounted fairing. In ’84, belt drive on the touring models and the 1340cc V2 Evolution™ engine made their first appearance.

’65 FL ELECTRA GLIDE® MORE

game changers This was a decade of many a future icon. In ’65 the FL Electra Glide® came to the fore, getting its name by being the first H-D® civilian bike to have an electric starter. It was equipped with fibreglass saddlebags, a comfortable saddle and windshield. A year later the first of the Shovelhead engines was introduced and in 1969 the trademark ‘Bat Wing fairing’ first showed its face and said “now, let’s ride”.

And what could be more appropriate for the eighties than the first infotainment system going into the 1986 Electra Glide® Classic and the Tour Glide®. Of course The FLT Tour Glide has a very special, direct descendent in the shape of the 2015 Road Glide® Special, that came about as a direct result of our epic journey some 30 years later, Project Rushmore.

A true urban warrior, its distinctive custom stance (as well as its agile handling) come largely from its short chassis, lowered front suspension, low profile, solo seat and fat balloon tyres. The seat height is low and is central to its unmistakable profile that runs all the way from its eyebrow headlight to the tip of its adjustable seat. Willie G. Davidson himself styled this Harley® classic back in 1980. So you completely love the Fat Boy® and your favourite colour’s black. Sorted. We rolled the Fat Boy® Special out just five years ago and its reputation is growing. It’s black no question; wheels, frame, exhaust shields, mirrors. Only the paint job can, if you want, deviate from the black colour scheme.
