THE NAVIGATOR There are rumors abound. Some of which I can deny, but some certainties I can no longer disguise behind shifting veils of dissimulation. The one thing we can all agree on is that I'm insane. They probably warned you about that before you were allowed to see me. Did they also tell you I used to be the Navigator? A little crazy isn't beyond the realm of reason. I spent twenty years in the pit of the ISS Ion Stryker feeling confined as the void of isolation shrinks the scale of the space. The mental game is always the toughest; since I was in control of the coordinates, they tried to keep me anonymous and unknown. We were on this Grand Tour of the Solar System. A journey down the gravity line toward the sun, compelled by interstellar destiny and the very human will to win. It was a risky play in the smash and grab days of cosmic reconnaissance. The uncharted territories were a vast and free range to path and plot and claim and name. First descents are what the pilots love, and I put them in those positions. After you drop in, there is no turning back, and the sloping lines of uncertainty are not merely the path to another place but the destination itself. You can feel the endorphin rush mask the pain, but the sweat and fear remain. Valor or Valhalla. There's no other way. The pilots get the glory and the girls. They get to name the chutes and the slopes and the runs. We sit quietly in the pit with no fanfare or fame. Like Sherpas who scale Everest over and over again, fixing ropes, setting camp, and hauling equipment twice their weight, we know that we are the ones who make it possible. Without the Navigator, they would all be lost.

KAZU KOKUBO PRO Kazu is an enigma. He’s one of snowboarding’s favorite sons, embraced around the world for his sense of style and the way in which he interprets the flow of the snow and sense of what is possible. He speaks his own language, and it’s one that requires no words. Communication and comprehension come from his eyes; with one look you seem to know what he wants to say. He’s a dedicated soul, searching for adventure and a balance in life. His graphic for 2017 is deeply personal. Kazu spends roughly half of each year at home, living a rural family life somewhere in-between a supersized garden and a small family farm. He is a dedicated family man maximizing every minute of every day as a husband, the father of two kids and two basset hounds. Where his life departs from normalcy, is that he spends half of each year away from those he loves most. With great internal conflict, he provides for his family with the same method that separates them. The Core Ash wood grain top sheet reflects Kazu’s connection with nature, and the KK eagle symbolizes his significance as an icon in snowboarding. On the base, the crane stands as Kazu’s daughter and the turtle embodies his son. The mountain is Kazu; it is his life, his passion and his obligation. The crane and the turtle are looking towards the mountain waiting for him to come home. And, Kazu rides down mountains to inspire and connect with them. Both elements drive the other, and so is the search for balance in life.

Call it creative genius, or just a method to deal with ADD, but Scott Stevens has been on his own island for a while, and people just let him be. BLACK SNOWBOARD OF DEATH Chaos was abound. Sailors abandoned ship as all mariners know tales of the Dark Abyss. It is eternal, and if a ship is caught in its grasp and engulfed by Leviathan, all life will be snuffed out like a match swallowed in the sea. The Captain was prepared for anything. He took off his jacket and rolled up his sleeves. He did not mind dying in a cold watery grave as his soul already belonged to Poseidon, but not without a fight. He must first wrestle the beast for glory before his lungs imploded from the pressure. He took a deep breath, and plunged into the darkness that was devouring his ship. Then came the silence. The Captain did not know how long he had been unconscious for. It could have been years or seconds, but there were clear lines cut between the time of his world, the blackness, and the reality he now found himself in. Caught upside down in the rigging, he could see none of his men on deck. All he could see were swarming ravens with wingspans half the length of his mast. “Ill omens, those Messengers of Death,” the Captain sneered. Trying to untangle himself, he first noticed his hands, or rather the lack of them. To his surprise and oddly, to his mild amusement, they had become desiccated, skeletal remains. His whole body had gone through the same transformation, yet he never felt better. In fact, if someone were to ask him to run a thousand miles barefoot over broken glass with his own ship strapped on to his back, he could do it with certainty. Strange, this new sensation of limitless power.

Owls have been both feared and venerated, despised and admired. They are considered wise and have been associated with witchcraft, the weather, and the cycle of life. For the 2017 Micro-scope, we have chosen Owls appearing at night, when people are helpless and blind, to guide us out of uncertainty and into the comforts of the known world. SPACE METAL FANTASY This dream washed over me like waves upon a beach. My consciousness caught in the limbo between the ebb and flow. Frozen outside of time, I was suspended in perfect equilibrium. Below me, the many streams of the universe coursed in a self-feeding loop. Constantly recreating itself—splitting, merging, consumed and reborn—in a calm violence that is both beautiful in its simplicity and horrifying in its relentless power. In a constant flow of perpetual transformation, natural, spontaneous and eternal, I felt that my concepts of right and wrong begin to disintegrate. There is only one beginning and the way in which all things pursue their unfathomable course. And in the end there is harmony. Caught in the torrent, the mind feels infinitely small and seemingly helpless. No instructions given. No guide. No meaning. Exerting force upon this flow without being conscious of it only upsets the balance and produces unintended consequences. Our only respite is that at each divergence is a beginning, and with each new beginning there is a choice to react, positively or negatively. Think of it as a spectrum. At the extreme, there is the loss of consciousness at the negative end and the attainment of hyperconsciousness at the positive end. With each step towards consciousness you become lighter. No longer are you fighting the universal currents that try to pull your head under. Rather this fantasy propels you, as you skim above the torrent, surfing a perfect and endless wave.

SPRING BREAK Since the inception of Spring Break, our philosophy has been to deconstruct modern snowboarding to its most fundamental roots and find beauty in simply making a turn. In this pursuit, we also explore the creativity found in snowboard design, construction and innovation. After all, an inspiring turn is symbiotic to the design of the snowboard matched with the vision of the rider commanding its control. Each winter we set out to push the limits with fresh and often experimental powder snowboard shapes. This new line of Spring Break snowboards is no exception. We have continued to build on some of our original design philosophies while adding some new surprises. The SURFLITE CORE™ was designed exclusively for our new Spring Break Powder boards to create a core that floats to the top of the deepest powder. In surfboard design, a thicker more buoyant board will help the board float much easier than a thin dense one. With this inspiration, we have developed and now evolved an industry-first core. As each Spring Break Powder board has a unique shape, each SURFLITE CORE™ features a unique alignment of Blocked Balsa and strategically placed Poplar throughout the board. In a development partnership with Union Binding Company, we have incorporated all new Forged Carbon Diamond Plates into the insert area of the core, creating the most high-tech and floatable core of all time.
Engineered specifically for our flagship model, this new core is a shining example of our Space Age technical supremacy. Designed using high yield materials, the HOVER CORE™ is so light it essentially floats across the snow. Thin cut low-density Paulownia strips are combined with 7 mm Poplar beams to create a unique ply configuration. We built the FSC® CERTIFIED DUAL CORE to achieve the consistent, dependable feel required from riders looking to take their skills to the next level. The FSC® CERTIFIED SELECT CORE is the original eco-friendly core. Its proven track record offers an environmentally conscious consumer a sustainable alternative without sacrificing any of the energy or stability expected from a CAPiTA. These cores have been reforestation certified by the Forest Stewardship Council for nature and habitat sustainability and made with a single species Poplar grain for a smooth, consistent ride. Extending from edge to edge and tip to tail the wood grain has no knots or finger joints enhancing response and providing a uniform flex pattern.

The Spring Break Powder boards have completely redesigned FORGED CARBON Quad Packs in the insert area of the Blocked Balsa SURFLITE™ CORE, while the hard-charging wide series Warpspeed features FORGED CARBON in the tip and tail eliminating chatter through variable train. These 30 mm CARBON ARCS are constructed utilizing an all new computer engineered carbon shaping process. After extensive lab work analyzing how a particular shape reacts to the dynamics of riding, each piece of pre-shaped and pre-laminated CARBON FIBER is made to exact standards that enhance the positive features of a particular board.
These 30 mm high tensile strength carbon strips are grid-woven into CARBON SUPER BEAMS. As a snowboard flexes, internal additives are stressed. MATRIX™ CARBON has been engineered to withstand maximum pressure and respond with a vengeance. This counteracting displacement of energy creates a board with twice the ollie power and response than a board with standard carbon additives. Originating from solidified volcanic lava, BASALT is an abundant resource long known for its thermal properties, strength, and durability. The SUPERDRIVE™ base is another new construction component in the 2017 CAPiTA line. Targeted toward versatility in a high-end sintered base, this running material strikes a unique and sought after balance between high performance and low maintenance. With an increased density polyethylene, these ultra high molecular weight sintered bases are more wax absorbent and allow longer time periods between waxing sessions. Properly maintained sintered bases are fast, durable, and are the preferred choice of pro snowboarders worldwide.
The XXX[TRUDED] base material takes the characteristics and manufacturing techniques used in creating normal extruded base material but due to higher pressure and temperature, increases the surface hardness to levels near most sintered bases. This increases the durability and surface strength creating a base that will last longer and be more durable when jibbing and ripping around the mountain. We use a classic, time proven, extruded base material for some of our fan-favorite boards. True to all extruded bases, the HMC bases are low maintenance, user-friendly bases that perform well with or without your constant waxing and attention. The HMC Extruded is a special “higher molecular composition” base that is denser, more durable, and more abrasion resistant than standard extruded bases. The result is a hard, fast, and reliable base that will get you where you want to go faster than your friends.
The HIGH TRANSPARENT EXTRUDED base features an altered molecular composition that allows more vibrant graphic options while keeping the low maintenance and technical benefits of extrusion.

Shearing layers are essential to a board’s durability. When the outer areas of a snowboard flex there are opposing forces that stress the construction layers. In order to reduce that amount of internal force a softer layer can act as a shock absorber. This thin layer of URETHANE placed between more rigid materials allow the board to flex without the risk of failure during impact.
Damp, durable, and lighter than rubber, our new CORK EDGE DAMPENING SYSTEM is placed in between the steel edge and the ABS sidewall for increase protection from blunt force impacts. The Ultrafear features this exclusive dampening system underfoot where most boards meet rails, and the Scott Stevens Pro features a full contact length system because with him, you just never know what’s going to happen. With five Transworld Good Wood Awards in five years for the DOA series, it’s clear that the performance and value of these boards are unmatched. The Mothership is in constant progression, we don’t sit idle in the R&D lab – awards or not. FORTRESS™ KEVLAR BOUND SIDEWALLS are bonded by a Kevlar “S” wrap from the top of the sidewall to the underside of the core. This lightweight technology binds the sidewall and core material together like no other.
Technology integrated into snowboard construction affects many characteristics of a board’s performance. Flex, along with weight, stability, energy and other factors come into play when considering whether a board is right for you. Flex may be the most important as it will determine how you are able to manipulate your board on snow. Soft, flexible boards are greatfor jibbing and overall command over your snowboard, especially in the park. They’re easy to ride and very forgiving. Stiffer boards have more pop, more energy, and more stability at high speeds but they require more effort and skill from the rider as well. All boards in this catalog are rated on a scale from 1 to 10. The number given is the estimated resistance the board may provide to the average customer.

1 would be the resistance of a noodle, 10 would be the resistance of a tree trunk.
All snowboard shapes are designed with four blend zones. This is the area after the sidecut ends and before the nose or tail shape starts. In this small section, the shape of the board must transition from a sidecut arc going one direction into the tip shape arc going in the opposite direction. This critical section of the board is similar to the steering system in your car. It's the driving force in initiating turns and determining where your board is going. A poorly designed blend zone will cause your board to be hooky or turn slowly and could limit your ability to transition between edges. CAPiTA has taken the time to pay distinct attention to this detail; fine-tuning each and every board to make sure your riding experience is balanced and perfect.

Sidecut is the arching shape that the outer rails of the board take from the wide points near the nose and tail toward the narrow point in the middle of the board. Sidecut dictates the board's turning functionality along with the personality of a snowboard. A PARABOLIC sidecut consists of a mirror-symmetrical curve. In snowboard terms, this design creates a board with a deeper sidecut and a quicker turning point in the center compared to radial arcs. A PROGRESSIVE sidecut consists of two or more radii blended together to accommodate the three stages of a turn. They provide easy turn initiation while offering greater control throughout the turn and maximum power when exiting. Our NEW AGE DIRECTIONAL sidecuts are progressive sidecuts, which also incorporate a reverse sidecut arc in the midsection of the board. Due to a reduced effective edge as a result of hybrid camber shapes, this reverse camber arc provides a point of contact to retain control throughout the turn and is affectionately referred to as DEATH GRIP™. A RADIAL sidecut is a single radius design that allows your board to start and finish a turn on the same arc.
BLENDED RADIAL sidecuts feature a single radius arc through the midsection of the board combined with a custom designed blend zone at the contact points. Varying the length of these blend zones and tailoring them specifically for certain aspects of riding greatly improves a board’s performance. Inspired by a combination of surfboard design and on snow riding functionality, the all new SURF BLENDED RADIAL sidecut is the ultimate powder surfing shape. This shape features a radial sidecut just through and past the inserts, followed by a huge smooth reverse blend zone and then topped off with a ton of taper. Surf the earth and get loose in the white room! Engineered for deep powder but still versatile around the mountain, this RADIAL sidecut is complemented by a TAPERED TAIL. This narrower tail section naturally sinks in the powder while the wider nose section floats above the snow line. The result is less work and more fun as the board surfs on one smooth continual arc. An ASYMMETRICAL board features different sidecut theories on each edge of the same board. For the Spring Break Asymmetrical Twin, we have implemented a large and smooth RADIAL sidecut for the toe-side edge of the board while the heel-side edge of the board features a tighter NEW AGE DIRECTIONAL sidecut with DEATH GRIP™.
With CAPiTA’s FLAT KICK design technology, we’ve tightened the tip profile radius that blends the shoulders of the board into the tip and tail height on reverse camber boards. The tight tip radius in conjunction with tuned blend zones allows you to have a forgiving and easy to ride reverse camber board that is still responsive and quick during edge-to-edge transitions. This also creates a flat tip and tail which increases jibbing stability and also helps the board plane on top of powder creating float and control.

Sublimation is an exact science for an inexact process. In sublimation, ink is pushed through a substrate into base material using pressure and heat. As base material is thicker and more opaque than topsheets, graphics become more vibrant when ink impregnates the material as opposed to other techniques where the ink is applied to one side or the other. Through sublimation, ink sits closer to the sliding surface and this technique excels when full colors are required. Many long nights were spent tinkering with a complex combination of cook-times, pressure and temperature in a highly controlled environment to achieve some of CAPiTA’s signature base graphics.

Sometimes if we find utilizing a single technique just isn’t enough, we open up the armory and stack one process on top of another! Whether it’s a PAM16000™ printed topsheet with silkscreen embellishments, or a sublimated base with silkscreen and die-cut pieces, MULTITECH™ sends you further into DEEPSPACE™.
The PLT™ machine sits in a secret hidden corner of the factory behind two very unassuming, nondescript metal doors. The PLT™ is so secretive that with the exception of its inventor, Mr. Michi Kollmann, all visitors to the room must be versed in an ever-changing secret handshake. PLT™ technology is exclusive to CAPiTA MFG and magically bonds the topsheet to an already pressed snowboard. This is magical because the rest of the world mashes their topsheets on with glue, heat and pressure during the pressing stage. Doing so causes the fiberglass structure underneath to show through the topsheet. And because nobody wants to spend their hard earned cash on a bumpy snowboard, many companies slather their tops with a thick toxic lacquer to smooth things out. Not only is that shit HEAVY and can potentially develop unsightly hairline cracks, it’s also really unhealthy for the working environment. The PLT™ machine produces a featherlight, smooth, high-gloss finish, without all that poisonous deadweight. SCIENCE IS MAGIC, WAAAAHBAH!!
