Dear Como Friends Supporters: Four years ago, Como Friends and a team of committed volunteer supporters came together to transform Como Zoo and the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory to meet the growing needs of a 21st century audience. The goal of our ambitious public and private partnership was to raise the $18.8 million needed to create both a new habitat for Como Zoo’s beloved polar bears Neil and Buzz, as well as a new wing to display the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory’s renowned Bonsai, a blossoming collection that had been too long confined behind the scenes. Our work began in earnest just as the economy collapsed, a trick of timing that made our goal seem remote indeed. But as the recession began to strain our core audience of young families and school groups, Como’s commitment to creating a free, educational, and family-friendly atmosphere began to seem more critical to our community than ever. In fact, in just four years, Como’s annual audience rose by nearly a half million visitors, nearly 7 in 10 of whom told us they relied on Como’s free admission to bring their families. As Como’s needs grew in this tough economic climate, our community of supporters rose to the challenge, giving generously to the campaign and responding to our invitations to “Show Your Love for Como” in every way imaginable. Some of you told us that coming to Como was a Minnesota family tradition you wanted to save for generations to come. Some of you told us how much you admired Como’s growing role as a force for nonformal education, creating opportunities for kids whose families face tough budget choices. Some of you told us how much you loved polar bears, Bonsai, and the beauty and diversity of Como’s amazing animal and plant collections. Some of you told us how much you value Como’s beautiful and diverse audience as well, two million visitors of every race and creed, all of whom receive the same warm welcome from our great team of volunteer greeters. Every individual, corporation and foundation you see listed in these pages had their own special reason for giving to Como Friends in 2011 and for helping us fulfill the goals of our capital campaign. Yet each of you shares in a century-long tradition of community support for Como, a destination whose beauty and inclusiveness creates a deep sense of place in the Twin Cities—and inspires an even deeper love of the natural world.

Thank you for all you do for Como! Sincerely,

Jackie Sticha President

Wendy Rubin Board Chair

“In the last decade, they’ve transformed a treasure.”

– Pioneer Press, Dec. 9, 2011

Como welcomed nearly two million visitors in 2011, the largest audience of any cultural institution in Minnesota. Free admission remained a driving force for Como’s visitors, nearly 40 percent of whom told us they have household incomes below the state median.

Serving the whole community… is part of Como’s DNA “Como’s heritage, welcoming environment, accessibility, and the fact that nearly a third of Como’s visitors are from communities of color were all factors that contributed to the Wells Fargo Foundation’s decision to support the Campaign for Como. One could say that Como’s commitment to serving the whole community, regardless of socio-economic background, is part of their DNA and the reason Como has continued its commitment to maintaining free admission. Also, the whole community benefits from the shared experience and interest in learning about the nature from around the world. The Como Zoo and the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory’s nearly century-long history is a testament to the deep sense of the community’s connection to Como. But Como’s longevity is also a testament to Como’s commitment to staying relevant and responsive to the changing needs of the community.” —Carolyn Roby • Vice President, Wells Fargo Foundation Corporate Social Responsibility Group

The construction of Polar Bear Odyssey provided employment for more than 200 workers during the exhibit’s two-year construction period, creating a ripple effect in the economy that will continue for years to come. In fact, a study from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums found that for each dollar of outlays by Como Zoo and other AZA organizations in the U.S., an additional $1.90 was generated to the benefit of the economy for a total economic impact of $2.90. By this metric, the nearly $16 million invested in the Polar Bear Odyssey project will yield more than $46 million in economic impact for the region.

A regional asset… a renewal of heritage “Como is really a public/private partnership, and it’s one of the most effective I’ve ever seen. When I joined the campaign steering committee, one of the things that impressed me the most was learning that Como is able to welcome more than two million visitors for just over $3 a person—compare that to other institutions, and it really has an impact. No one wants to give their money to an inefficient cause. The other thing that struck me was walking into the Visitor Center and seeing all the hustle and bustle, with beautiful gardens in one direction, and the excitement of the Zoo right there, and people of every age and background. Living in the west metro, I’d thought of Como as a small zoo in St. Paul and upon being reacquainted with it, it became clear to me what a regional asset it really is. It’s the largest attraction in the state, second only to the Mall of America. The heritage of Como is important, and the renewal of that heritage with Polar Bear Odyssey and The Japanese Gardens Experience has been exciting to be a part of. You want your effort to go into organizations that are growing and succeeding, and that’s Como.” —Doug Jaeger • Chief Executive Officer, Adolfson & Peterson Construction

Volunteers from the Minnesota Bonsai Society have been instrumental in creating Como’s nationally regarded collection of Bonsai, which will soon be on year-round display in The Japanese Gardens Experience. Bonsai artists Mike Porcaro (this page) and Ken Ellis (far right) are just two of the 1,190 volunteers who shared their time and their talents with Como last year, donating more than 48,975 hours doing everything from planting bulbs to putting on costumes to preparing animal diets.

We’ve cherished our relationship with the Conservatory “The beautiful thing about Bonsai is it’s not just art—it’s a living, growing art form. Bonsai are real trees and they should ideally be living outdoors, which is why we strived for an outdoor display at Como for many years. We had some input at the conception of The Japanese Gardens Experience, and the layout has been very well received by the club, and the fact that it ties in with the Japanese garden is just a perfect match. Over the years, we had many members of the Minnesota Bonsai Society who have worked on the trees, and we’ve cherished our relationship with the Conservatory. The trees at Como represent Bonsai in Minnesota, and we’re all invested in wanting them to look good. It’s really a symbiotic relationship. Como is considered among the top ten collections in the country, but I think this will catapult the collection even further. We’ve been looking forward to this expansion for many years, and to see it come to pass will be marvelous. Believe me, visitors are going to be very impressed.” —Lionel Flood • president, Minnesota Bonsai Society

More than 614,000 kids and adults experienced an education program at Como in 2011—a student population larger than Minnesota’s ten largest school districts combined. Surveys told us that Como’s free admission was important to 7 in 10 visitors, a commitment to access that made it possible to welcome field trip groups from more than 59 Minnesota counties.

These are things you just don’t forget “As a former teacher, I know that learning doesn’t begin and end in a classroom. Kids learn in many different ways, and being able to come to Como and see how big a polar bear’s paw is, or to touch the turtles and frogs at an interpretive cart, or to smell a corpse flower when it’s in bloom—these are things you just don’t forget. I think that’s why we’re seeing more and more evidence showing that these outside-the-classroom experiences like visiting the Zoo or experiencing the Conservatory can help to bridge the achievement gap for disadvantaged kids. Como doesn’t charge admission, and we want to keep it that way, to benefit everybody. Another lesson Como teaches is the power of philanthropy and community support. If you think back to what the polar bear home used to be like, and then see Polar Bear Odyssey, I think we can all feel that we’ve done something wonderful for these animals—they’re in a place where they can really thrive. Como is on the cutting edge of conservation, and it’s up to us to keep it that way.” —Nancy Nelson • board member Como Friends, co-chair of the Campaign for Como

A gem for the next generation to discover “One of the magical components of Como is that it’s not just a zoo—it’s also a conservatory. You can go there to see the animals and you can experience the peacefulness and the beauty of the gardens and the plants. I think that’s what makes a visit to Como so rich. Como Park Zoo and Conservatory is a treasure that has been here for nearly a hundred years, which is why it could be easy to take it for granted. Fortunately, at critical times in its history, when it could have been lost, community leaders have stepped in to make sure that this gem would be here for the next generation to discover—and for their parents and grandparents to rediscover. The Saint Paul Foundation is proud to have been part of keeping Como strong over the years. So much good work had gone into the recent Campaign for Como in a challenging economic climate that we were very pleased to help Como Friends get to the finish line in 2011 with a second campaign grant. We proud Minnesotans have boasting rights again having updated one of the country’s last free and very accessible zoos – a zoo and conservatory, I should say.” —Carleen Rhodes • President and CEO, The Saint Paul Foundation
