It has been ten years since Como volunteers and boosters, community donors and docents combined forces to create the nonprofit that is now Como Friends. Although we’re still relatively “new” to the nonprofit world in the Twin Cities, what we’ve accomplished in the last decade with your support has been nothing short of amazing—reinvesting more than $23 million in programs and projects at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory that have helped to make this free-admission treasure Minnesota’s most visited cultural institution. As we look back on 2009, it is clear to us that Como occupies a special place in the heart of this community. Always a refuge in tough economic times, this most recent economic downturn saw a nearly 7 percent surge in attendance at Como. Some came for the solace of the Sunken Garden, and the hope it gives Minnesotans during the bleakest days of winter. Some brought their kids for their first face-to-face encounter with an orangutan, an early connection with the natural world that no one ever forgets. Some came for free education programming about conservation and the natural sciences, or signed up for one of our award-winning summer camps. No matter what brought this diverse community of more than two million visitors to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in 2009, every experience they had was enhanced and improved thanks to the contributions of the community of supporters you’ll find in these pages. In this annual report, you’ll see how contributions made through Como Friends improved the health and wellbeing of the animals in the care of Como Zoo, created lush and living gardens throughout the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, and engaged nearly one in four Como visitors with value-added education programs that inspire stewardship of these unique resources. You will also meet some of the people in Como’s community—nearly two million strong—whose contributions of their time and talents at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory strengthen our mission every day of the year. Ken Ellis Volunteer Ken Ellis, a retired art teacher from northeast Minneapolis, comes to the Conservatory with a toolkit of trimming sheers and toothbrushes for training the 160 Bonsai that make up Como’s nationally-ranked collection. After more than ten years of Tuesday morning training sessions, Ellis says,
A community that gives back Como Friends invested $31,000 in volunteer services, providing support and training to more than 1,000 volunteers at Como in 2009. This community of volunteers donated more than 50,000 hours of their time and talents at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, a contribution equivalent to 25 full-time employees.

C Como Zoo
One of only four free metro zoos in the country, Como Zoo’s exhibits offer noseto-nose encounters with the animals visitors most want to see. In 2009, Como Friends helped to underwrite new landscaping efforts across the Zoo, professional development opportunities for zoo staff, and operant conditioning training which has helped to improve the health and wellbeing of all the animals in Como’s care. Support from Como Friends also helped give the Primate Building its first facelift in 25 years—improving lighting, dampening noise, and engaging visitors with educational displays about primate conservation efforts worldwide. Total gifts to Como Zoo: $184,204
Megan Elder “Zookeepers love the support of Como Friends, because it allows us to do our jobs better, and gives us some pretty amazing opportunities to develop our skills and share what we know with other zoos,” says Como Zoo primate keeper Megan Elder, who will join orangutan conservation efforts in Sumatra this year, thanks to a grant secured by Como Friends. “We’ve got some
great things happening behind the scenes at Como Zoo, and now with the improvements to the Primate Building, we’re excited to have that reflected in our public areas.”
M Marjorie McNeely Conservatory
From beneficial bugs, to seeds for the Sunken Garden, to the talented horticulturists that keep it all in bloom, Como Friends’ investment in the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory is always growing. In 2009, your support provided new species plants for the Conservatory’s lush and living collections, all the plants and flowers used to create five seasonal flower shows, and renovation for the Historic Entrance of the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, one of Minnesota’s most beloved buildings. Total gifts to the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory: $488,714
Greg McNeely “Como has meant a lot to me, even when I was a kid. My mom used to bring us here in the wintertime – we’d jump in the station wagon and go to the Conservatory and open the door and wham–there was this big blast of humidity, and wonderful smells, and you were in a different world. Every time I visit, I’m reminded of how many wonderful things there are on this earth to appreciate, and every time I come here I feel like I’m close to my mom. There’s something about it – my family’s gift to Como has turned into a true gift that keeps on giving.” — Greg McNeely, Como Friends Board Member

Education Programs From free daily education programming to professional development for area science teachers, Como’s education programs reached more than 450,000 adult and child learners in 2009—nearly six times the student population of the Minneapolis and St. Paul school districts combined. Support from Como Friends created scholarships for Como’s award-winning summer camps, enriched fieldtrip programs for area schools, and innovative after-school programming like “WINGS,” that invites middle-schoolers to go behind the scenes at Como, where they learn about future careers in conservation, biology, and beyond. Total gifts to Education: $72,670
Marcus Leo Hansen “I’ve come to Como Zoo all of my life, and I’ve taken a lot of classes, too,” says Marcus Leo Hansen, a St. Paul second grader. “I like how close you can get to the animals—some you never really get to see anywhere else.” In 2009, Hansen donated $233–the proceeds from his annual lemonade stand– to Como Zoo’s zebras and giraffes. After taking classes like Primate Potluck, Polar Bear Plunge, and Big Cat Breakfast at Como, Hansen says, “I think I’d like to probably work with animals some day.”

Capital Improvements With a bold new Master Plan guiding the next 20 years of capital improvements, Como Park Zoo and Conservatory will soon be able to showcase a 21st century commitment to conservation that was once confined behind-the-scenes. This year will see the completion of Polar Bear Odyssey, a state-of-the-art exhibit that will set the new standard for exhibits across Como Zoo—and around the country. Community support for Polar Bear Odyssey and The Japanese Garden Experience projects were strong in 2009 in spite of a challenging economy—a sign of Como’s value to the community, and its vision for the future. Robert Buchanan “Here was a small metro zoo that stepped up and said, ‘We’re going to build one of the
world’s greatest exhibits.’ And they did it,” says Robert Buchanan, president of the nonprofit conservation group Polar Bears International. Buchanan came to Como Zoo in December 2009 to bestow PBI’s “three diamond ranking” on Polar Bear Odyssey, the first exhibit in the U.S. to earn the distinction. “Zoos today are not like the zoos that our grandparents went to. Zoos today are centers of conservation and education. Como Zoo understands that, and that’s what puts them head and shoulders above the others.”
