Editorial

Talking of community projects, during the school holidays, do any of the ‘Probus Rockers’ fancy getting together to touch up and add a bit of varnish to the ‘Poppy Mosaic’? After a wet winter, a few of the individual rocks are in need of a bit of TLC.

Firstly, thanks to all contributors to this edition. As you will see, this month we highlight, celebrate and yes, even salute, the amazing youth of our village.

Don’t forget the Ross Paddock Memorial games on Sunday 4th August at the playing field. Starts at 11am. You can expect some competitive football, good food, laughter and shenanigans. It’s all in a good cause and in remembrance of a young Probus man taken from his family and friends too early.

Previously, we’ve mentioned the community initiative to plant spring bulbs around the entrances to the village. Two sacks of daffodil bulbs have been promised by the good folks at Fentongollan and the Parish Council has offered a grant to purchase a few more. Several people have already put their names forward to help with the planting in September, but we need more. If you would like to get involved in seeing our village entrances come to bloom next spring, contact the editor.

I hope many of you are able to visit the art exhibiton in the church. Sounds like there will be a lot to see and perhaps even something to brighten up that wall in your home that’s crying out for an original piece of artwork. Enjoy the summer, Probus. Before we know it, it’ll be the last night of the Proms!

Probus Club

The next meeting will be at Probus Village Hall on 7th August from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, where we will enjoy a Cream Tea and musical entertainment. This is an open meeting, where all are welcome including members of the Memory Café, the Luncheon Club and members’ guests.

Once again the Probus Club of Probus visited Barbara & Ian Holt’s Oxturn House in Ladock for their summer picnic and were blessed with glorious sunshine. A sumptuous buffet was followed by entertainment from Nick Hibbett and Ian Tumilty, pictured below, and some vocals by Linda Hibbett. The whole afternoon was a resounding success.

On the 4th September, the speaker will be Paul Hibbert who will talk about The Samaritans. New Members and Visitors always welcome. For further details, please telephone our Secretary, Pat on 01726 882978.

Probus Ladies Group The members attending the July meeting are now fully aware of the exercises needed to be performed to keep a supple and healthy body and mind. Our speaker Kay Middleditch gave a very informative talk on simple exercises in the home with no need to purchase expensive equipment.

I remember when...

Before D Day the woods were full of American soldiers so I had a permit to use the road, but children were refused, in case they talked! It was a long walk all round Grampound Road instead of the valley.

Mrs Bette in Ladock Wartime Stationmaster of Probus & Ladock Halt Six years I was there. When I went for the job I thought I wouldn’t get it as I was tiny, but I’d been born in Ladock Post Office and knew how to work the telegraph.

There were seven linesmen to see to the line and they had a stove in a hut on the line. They made good tea! I had a precious extra ration for being Station Mistress and a little firestove in the office, (the safe was there too) as I brewed up as well. When the war was over a man came to do the job, but it didn’t last long, as the station was soon closed. This is the third of the ‘Probus Memories’ articles taken from a small handbook produced by the Probus Old Cornwall Society in 1982.

During the war, business increased a lot. There were three trains each way every day and people used to run down the backlit to go to Truro or St. Austell. Very few buses you see.

Images: Two undated photos of Probus and Ladock Halt showing the station office where Mrs Bette spent many hours during WW2. Sadly the halt was closed in 1957, and just seven years later Grampound Road Station was also closed. Nowadays, the station is long gone, but the fields shown in these photos have hardly changed at all. Many thanks to Adam Tofts and Jack Vincent for sharing.

A lot of rabbits were sent to London and Birmingham and broccoli too. People sent flowers so I thought I’d send primroses. Father-in-law laughed at the idea, but for the city people it was a breath of country air and they were lovely primroses! Yes, we had proper printed tickets and I used to see tickets and wave off the trains. No names on the station then, and no sign posts either. Children used to put pennies on the line for the train to flatten them, but there was a row about that so it was stopped.

Probus under 8s

cardigan. Tom is persuaded by Isabel, against his better judgement, to bury the dead man and keep the baby as their own. It was to be their secret.

On a glorious sunny day on Saturday 11th May, the Probus under 8s football team travelled to Home Park in Plymouth for the Mayflower 400 Community Cup tournament, hosted by Plymouth Argyle Community Trust. The boys had a fantastic day and played some terrific football. A great experience for all involved.

On a visit home, they learn who the baby and dead man were and how they ended up in a boat out at sea. The widow of the dead man is consumed with grief at the loss of her husband and child. Isabel is determined to keep the baby and not tell a soul, but Tom is riddled with guilt, and soon everything starts to unravel. This story is about the result of decisions made under stress, that can have a life long effect on many people.

Probus Book Club The book we chose to read in June was The Light Between the Oceans by M.L. Stedman. It is an easy book to read and most of us enjoyed it writes Liz Horder. It is about Tom and Isabel, who meet in Australia after the First World War. Tom is suffering from what he has seen and the actions he had to carry out during the war. (These days we call it PTSD). He wants to become a lighthouse keeper, and he achieves this and is posted to Janus Rock, a small island off the coast of Australia near a small town called Portageuse. He meets and marries Isabel in this town, and they both go to live on Janus Rock. All they now want to complete their happiness is children. Unfortunately, Isabel has several miscarriages and becomes very distressed. One day a boat washes up on the island holding a dead man and a crying baby wrapped in a lady’s

PO Eddy On page 13 of Probus News July edition, we asked if anyone could identify the man standing next to PO Eddy (who is on the left) in the photo below. Many thanks to Mrs Farley from The Green who suggested that the man could be Nobby Clarke who worked at the garage. Mrs Farley also mentioned Ray Harris who worked in the Post Office nearby. Can anyone confirm if it is Nobby or Ray?

A message from Rev Joachim Foot

Probus Church diary

Jean Vanier remembered: In my life before being a vicar, I worked in the care sector with people with learning disabilities. I worked for a charity called L’Arche which was founded by a man called Jean Vanier. In the 1960s, care for those with learning disabilities was very much ‘out of sight, out of mind’, with large ‘institutions’ providing the majority of care. Jean felt the Lord’s call upon him to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities. Jean’s premise was simple, humans flourish in loving, nurturing communities. So Jean set up a small community where people with and without disabilities lived together and L’Arche was born.

L’Arche is now an international organisation with hundreds of communities across the world. Through Jean’s work, and L’Arche’s campaigning activities, care standards have improved across the world as the voices of people with learning disabilities have been heard.

Probus Primary School celebrates positive OFSTED

The successful introduction of the Cornerstones curriculum ‘inspires pupils to learn’ and is underpinned by an ‘effective development of language and literacy’ with ‘spiritual, moral, social and cultural development’ sitting at its heart. The contribution of the children also came in for specific mention with inspectors congratulating pupils for displaying ‘exceptional pride in their work’ and demonstrating ‘great enthusiasm for learning’.

Probus Primary School has been judged by OFSTED to be a ‘Good’ school in all aspects of its provision and, as a consequence, has a judgement of ‘Good’ for Overall Effectiveness. The report, published in June, reflects so many of the school’s positive changes, improvements and achievements since the last inspection in 2016.

Progress in writing in Key Stage 2 is well above the national average and is in line with the top 10% of schools in 2018. The development of pupil vocabulary from Early Years to Y6 and the focus on subject-specific word development was acknowledged as supporting communication and comprehension skill development. Most recently, the school has been part of two national Mathematics projects, and the development and inclusion of Maths Mastery at every phase was cited as strongly improving.

The inspection team acknowledged that “school leaders and Trust directors have successfully created an ethos in which all pupils… are inspired to learn. The positive relationships and mutual respect between leaders, staff and pupils support the progress of all pupils in the school”.

While Probus Primary School is obviously delighted to have received a positive inspection outcome, it is by no means journey’s end. Its vision, in line with the Aspire Academy Trust, is to offer every pupil a world-class education, based on high quality teaching in a safe and friendly environment, and every member of staff remains focused on achieving this goal. Executive Principal Mrs Lyn McNamara comments, “On behalf of the Aspire Academy Trust and our Hub Councillors, I want to thank De Carden, our Head of School, for her passionate leadership over the past two years. Equally, I would like to thank all the staff. They have, without a doubt, worked through really challenging times over recent years and this report feels like recognition for and validation of their hard work, dedication and complete

commitment to our school and children. I would also like to say a huge thank you to our children. They could not have been more welcoming, polite, thoughtful, enthusiastic and all-round amazing advocates for our school! I have been hugely privileged to have been part of this journey over the past three years and sincerely hope you enjoy reading the report as much as I did.”

The Y6 Oak Class of Probus Primary School made school racing history on Wednesday 3rd July in the "Greenpower Education Trust IET Formula Goblin" racing event at Predannack Airfield on the Lizard. Not only did the Probus team win FIRST PLACE overall (out of 40 primary schools & 50 cars), they scooped FIRST PLACE in Portfolio and THIRD PLACE in Slalom.

Head of School Miss Carden comments, “Consistency, and attention to detail across every area of the school, has been the key to the school’s success and we shall remain rigorous in enforcing high standards for teaching, pupil behaviour and attitudes to learning. I am delighted for our staff, our children, our parents and our wider community that Probus Primary has had its efforts acknowledged by OFSTED and we can continue our journey to excellence as a GOOD school!”

The Greenpower Education Trust is a UK based charity with a proven track record in kick-starting careers in engineering. It helps unlock potential and spark enthusiasm for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through the excitement of motorsport. Continued over page..

From page 17.

The annual IET Formula Goblin events, for primary schools nationwide, are run on a points system. The team with the least amount of points at the end of the day are the overall winners with the slalom, drag race events and the portfolio of the build of the car all carrying minus points. Many congratulations Oak Class, you've set the bar extremely high for 2020!

for cake decoration. It is also an ingredient of rose gin; there is one distilled here in Cornwall using local rose flowers.

By Will van Zyl We are all familiar with the rose, the flower of love and war: The War of the Roses. It is probably the most popular bloom used in flower arrangements today, and they are all designed for a specific feature: colour, fragrance or disease resistance and there are over 30,000 different cultivars available across the globe. One of my favourites is Rosa Rhapsody In Blue, a semi-double purply-blue flower with yellow stamens and a lovely scent, the open flowers are good for pollinators like bees and hoverflies. Another attractive cultivar worth mentioning is Rosa William Lobb, named after an important 19th-century Cornish plant collector.

The hips (fruit) are a favourite with foragers but are not often seen in garden varieties because most modern roses are designed with intricate double flowers preventing insects from pollinating them. Roses with open flowers like the native dog rose (Rosa canina), and Rosa rugosa produce good hips which can be made into rose hip tea, jam and jelly. The ripe hips can be eaten directly from the bush and are very high in vitamin c. Even the seeds are of value, being cold pressed for oil used in cosmetics.

Rose fossils have been found dating back about 35 million years. It was, however, only grown as a crop in 1200 BC in Persia for the rose water used in recipes, medicine and skin tonics. The Roman emperors used rose water for bathing in and the petals as confetti to shower their guests at banquets. Today the rose is still used similarly, the rose water for flavouring ice creams and desserts and the petals

Rosa rugosa is a native of eastern Asia, including south-eastern Siberia and Japan, where it can be found growing on dunes next to the sea. It is therefore ideal as hedging in windswept coastal areas where sea spray can kill other plants. A little poem to finish on: There once was a rose from Siberia Which was happy growing in the dune area It’s equally happy in a Cornish bay Where it isn’t bothered by the sea spray And hopefully won’t cause a foraging mania! 29

Roseland Academy

stone in October and will be looking for sponsors to back them and support the development of a new Roseland Racer. Well done to Mr Seyler, Teacher of DT and Co-ordinator of Greenpower Club and to Mr Henderson, Premises Manager, who accompanied the team.

Our Year 11 students celebrated in style at the annual Year 11 Leavers’ Ball held at The Alverton Hotel in Truro. The weather was glorious, and a great turnout of parents, friends and family lined the entrance to the hotel to watch students arrive in a range of vehicles from classic cars and tractors to a Ferrari. The much-anticipated celebration marks the end of the students’ journey at The Roseland Academy. Students and staff enjoyed an emotional but hugely enjoyable evening of fine food, dancing and laughter. Many happy memories were made throughout the evening.

A group of Year 9 students has been working towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. To complete the Award, students had to undertake several hours volunteering, work on a skill, take part in physical activity and complete a qualifying expedition. They recently took part in the required two-day qualifying expedition, which utilised the orienteering and adventure skills they had worked on throughout the year. In total 46 Year 9 students completed the Award, a very worthy achievement.

We look forward to welcoming students back in August for GCSE Results Day.

We would like to wish our students, their families and our staff a very safe and relaxing summer break.

A group of GCSE Media and Drama students recently attended an event at Falmouth University’s Academy of Music and Theatre Arts, where they were able to meet the production team behind BBC1’s hit period drama, Poldark. BBC Radio Cornwall’s Debbie McCrory hosted the event for those students who may be considering a career in the media industry. They were also treated to a sneak preview of the first episode of the 5th and final series of the show before it returns to our TV screens this summer. Our Greenpower Team recently took part in the 2019 Greenpower Qualifiers at Predannick Airfield. They took part in two races, coming 2nd in Race One and taking 1st place in Race Two. This is a fantastic achievement for the team, who built The Roseland Racer 5 from scratch. The team automatically qualified for the international final at Silver34

1953 Coronation Programme Mrs Moore has kindly passed us another old booklet. This one was produced in 1953 as a commemorative programme for Probus and Grampound villages to cover the celebrations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2nd June 1953. Some of our older readers may remember the coronation and have a tale to tell about what happened in Probus. Please do get in touch - we’d love to hear your stories. We’ve reproduced two of the pages from the programme entitled ‘Picture of Today’ on pages 40 and 41. These pages are a fascinating snapshot of social history from that period, and one or two of our readers will no doubt recognise their names, or perhaps those of family members, friends or the other persons listed.

distinguished Second World War record, and had volunteered to serve in Korea as a Company Commander with the 1st Bn the Durham Light Infantry.

There is more in this programme that may be of interest to our readers, and we’ll try to cover this in a future edition. The original will be given to the Probus Historic Cornwall Society for safekeeping.

Tragically, he was killed in action just eight days after the coronation, on 10th June 1953. His death came just six short weeks before an armistice was signed between the North Korean and Chinese armies and the United Nations forces on 27th July 1953. The armistice remains in effect today as a formal peace treaty on the Korean peninsula has never been signed. Major Tresawna is remembered on a plaque inside Probus Church.

The programme’s introduction was dated 2nd June 1953. It is poignant to note that one of those mentioned, Major Johnnie Tresawna DSO, was recorded as being ‘on active service’ in Korea along with two other local men. Major Tresawna, from Lamellyn Farm, had a
