O

N 23rd June, Probus Historic Cornwall Society (PHCS) members were, once again, invited to join Redruth Old Cornwall Society for the bonfire to mark midsummer. The celebration of midsummer was an ancient pagan festival, held on the 21st June (the longest day of the year). Rather than give up the practice with the coming of Christianity, it continued but is held on St John's Eve. The ancient customs, including the of throwing a bunch of herbs into the fire (some good, some bad), and prayers and verses in Cornish, continue to be enacted. July 2022 | 7

A message from the curate Goodness Gracious Me! The meaning behind the name ‘Probus’. This July I plan to do a bit of historical sleuthing with children from Probus Primary School as we look at the history of our church and our village. There’s an awful lot of history we could look into as the current church was built in the 15th century but there has been a church or priory on the site dating back over 1000 years.

The village Probus was named after the church which itself was dedicated to Saint Probus along with Saint Grace. When a church is named after a saint it gives us a story around which we can seek vision and identity but, unfortunately, we know relatively little about St Probus and even less about St Grace. But, perhaps the story on which the church was founded all those years ago was not about what St Probus and St Grace did but what they mean? We get a clue in the ancient motto of the church ‘Gratia et Probus’ which is Latin for ‘Grace and Goodness’. The word Probus after which our village was named simply means ‘goodness’ in Latin, an idea that speaks of God’s goodness to us and the fruit of the Spirit which can be displayed in our lives as we can do good to others. The word ‘Grace’ describes the loving generosity of God to an undeserving people which is at the heart of the story of Jesus and the salvation he brings, but also describes the attitude Jesus encouraged his followers to show to the rest of the world. So, maybe Grace and Probus aren’t historical people so much as ideas that live on and shape our attitudes and actions today. But if that’s so, then to whom do the two skulls (one male and one female) found in the wall next to the altar belong? A mystery perhaps the children of Probus Primary School can help to solve. Rev’d Paul

Jubilee Exhibition

“If I was king, I would make everyone pick up rubbish.”

By Sarah Hoggett

“I would like to be king because I would like to have guards. I would help people.”

O

VER the jubilee weekend a special exhibition brought together magazines from the coronation in 1953 and previous jubilees and drawings and collages created by the pupils of Probus Primary School. The village hall was a riot of red, white and blue bunting but it was the children’s artwork that really stole the show. Each class had decorated silhouettes of the queen’s head with royal motifs ranging from castles and corgis to princesses and pageantry, all adorned with a ‘speech bubble’ saying what the children would do if they were king or queen (some of which are quoted below).

There were also collaged kites from each year group, with photos, magazine cuttings and drawings, as well as Union flags galore. Sadly, we don’t have enough space to feature everything here, but here’s a taste of what was on show. Thanks to everyone who loaned items and gave up their time to mount the exhibition – and especially to the staff and pupils of Probus Primary School. “If I was queen, I would make sure that everyone has the same amount of happiness.” “If I was king or queen, I would make sure that everyone had a home and food.” 16 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 269

“If I was king, I would like to make peace worldwide because I don’t want anyone to be hurt.” “If I was queen, I would want to take care of the whole planet.” “If I was king, I would make the world a better place by making people friends.” “If I was queen, I would make sure everyone has a family.”

Ale Festival By Beth Pritchard, Probus Comrades Club Secretary

F

IRST and foremost, Probus Comrades Club Committee would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came to support us for our 2022 Ale Festival. We have heard many good things about the weekend, which was held over Platinum Jubilee Weekend and incorporated our celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee as well. This was our first Ale Festival in two years due to the pandemic and, while that in itself held its challenges, the weekend was a huge success. Between Wednesday’s ‘sponsors evening’ to Sunday’s ‘dregs day’, our patrons drank a whopping 1,239 pints of ale and cider! Our ales came from a different vendor this year, and included ales that we have never held before, and which went down well with a lot of our ale drinkers. We had a different range of cider than normal too and the new ‘flattlers’ were especially popular.

Our entertainment throughout the weekend consisted of amazing bands and singers such as Beautiful SouthWest, Dusk at Dawn, Jenny Bishop, and The Roosters. The fantastic Daniel Costin joined us on Sunday for our ‘dregs day’, where a hog roast and cocktails were available to mark the end of a successful weekend.

The charity we chose to support throughout the festival, and will continue to support, is close to a lot of the committee’s hearts. Man Down Cornwall, a charity that provides support for men’s mental health, was gracious enough to attend and hold a talk with the sponsors on the Wednesday evening. We are incredibly excited to announce that we have already confirmed the date for next year’s festival, which will be held from 26–29th May 2023, and we are also in the process of re-booking the bands and entertainment which our patrons loved so much. From us on the committee, to our bar staff, we are all incredibly grateful for the support shown for our club and will continue to do our best to provide amazing events, entertainment, and drinks to our loyal members!

Mid-Cornwall Wood Turners Club

A

T our May Club Night at Probus Village Hall on Tuesday 3rd, our chairman Richard, told us what a huge success he exhibition had been at Lobbs Farm, Heligan. As well as the existing members, many of our new members had a table and everyone sold something. There was interest from the general public about the club, with some wanting to come along to a club night.

events for for the whole village. Overall, they did a superb job and the profits made have already been passed on to local good causes and non-profits. The ale festival in Probus Comrades Club was another successful evert. Well done to the committee for putting that on after a two year break. No easy task. Personally, the highlight for me this past month was nothing to do with the above, it was my daughter returning home from Melbourne after a 27-month separation forced by the pandemic. She’s now back in Australia like so many ‘cousin Jennys’ before her and I miss her already.

After the business chat, winners of our monthly Jim Guy competition were announced. The theme was fruit. Colin Fullbrook was awarded first prize for his apple with Richard Elliott taking second.

Finally, thanks to all who contibuted photos, copy or otherwise helped me with this edition. It’s much appreciated.

We finished the evening with a demonstration from Steve James of colouring with acrylics. The shop table was busy, with thanks to our volunteers.

‘Mooving’ to pastures new?

Dates for July and August are: Club Nights - 5th July and 2nd August. Training Nights - 19th July and 16th August. The next Lobb’s exhibition at Heligan Tuesday, 26th July to Monday 1st August. Our contact details can be found on the Club Page of Probus News.

H my, what a month we’ve had. Firstly a huge debt of gratitude is owed to the Probus Platinum Jubilee Committee members for their sterling work in setting up a weekend to remember. Beacon and fireworks

F

OR those not glued to the TV, the other highlight of the evening of Thursday 2nd June was the beacon being lit followed by a fantastic fireworks display organised by the Probus Platinum Jubilee Committee. From multiple accounts sent to the Probus News, it was an amazing display in perfect weather and seen from as far away as Coombe and Foxhole.

HERE were more events held in Probus over the jubilee weekend than we can sensibly cover in this magazine. Highlights in the village hall were Caddick and Parkes entertaining at the 1950s tea dance and the family disco with DJ Johns Flowers. Saxophonist Daniel Costin wowed his audience in Probus Comrades Club while local shanty group Du Hag Owr got everyone doing the hornpipe in the Hawkins Arms garden. (Photo credits Jon Hibberd)

Letters to the Editor

Probus News Magazine Probus Village Hall Golden Jubilee Committee Diamond Jubilee Committee Probus Primary School Probus Parish Players Probus Church Peter Vian Angela Light Thanks go to our amazing volunteers: Morwenna, Hilary, Poppy, Phoebe, Lilia, Nick, Joe, Esther, Ryan, Jonathan, Peter and Claudia.

Dear Editor, What an amazing Platinum Jubilee celebration Probus was able to put on. There was a range of activities taking place from bunting making, rock painting all the way through to the main events that took place at the comrades club, Probus Village Hall, Hawkins Arms, Probus Church, the streets of Probus including a village trail.

The committee would love to hear your feedback on what you thought went well and what could be improved for future royal celebrations. Please get in touch via our Facebook page or email probusplatinumjubilee@gmail.com We have a few outstanding actions that we need to complete which include the display of the jubilee rocks and purchasing a picture of the Queen as a memento for the village. Both will take residence at the village hall. After that we will be hanging up our coats for a well deserved rest. If you have any jubilee rocks that haven’t been returned please contact the committee so we can collect them to form part of the display. We have a local artist lined up. The Probus Platinum Jubilee Committee.

Probus, you need to give yourself a massive pat on the back, you helped to raise £700 for local charities/not-forprofit groups. Well done everyone. The committee thanks everybody for their support and the generosity of their time, including: Probus Parish Council 32 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 269

Dear Editor, I am sure you will be receiving many of these letters containing a heartfelt thanks to the Platinum Jubilee Committee and all the village organisations who helped to make the jubilee weekend so memorable. The amount of planning and the work involved to make sure that it all went so smoothly was much appreciated. From the jubilee tea in the school, to the lighting of the beacon and superb fireworks, the nostalgic tea dance and the final notes of the shanty songs in the pub garden, we enjoyed it all. Thank you to them all Mike and Tess Bowen. Below: Putting up the bunting in Fore Street – from left to right: Councillor Karen Glasson, Nicola Hughes, Neil Glasson and Poppy. Time to go bass fishing! By Robin Bradley

W

ITH the summer upon us, bass anglers around Cornwall are stirring. Many won’t have ‘wet a line’ since before Christmas, and will be suffering from cabin fever. Rods will be checked for wear and tear, reels will be oiled up in all their ‘important little places’, waders checked for leaks, lures checked for the ill effects of salt water. A visit to the local tackle shop is eagerly anticipated. This is not just to stock up on essential items of tackle and bait and eye up that latest carbon-fibre wand feeling the ‘craic’ and tapping into the local grapevine is just as important.

36 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 269

Bass (not “seabass” please) can be caught in most months of the year, but it’s only as we enter the summer that prospects improve to the extent that it’s worthwhile fishing for them, and the weather is comfortable enough to enjoy doing so (for all but the most dedicated!). Prospects of landing that big fish should improve with autumn and the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’. For this is the time of serious bass angling, when the specimen hunter goes in search of the bass angler’s holy grail, the ‘doublefigure’ or 10lb+ (most anglers haven’t gone metric yet!) bass – sadly as rare as hen’s teeth these days. Whether you like catching bass from boat or shore, with lures, bait or fly, fishing for them can be done in a variety of breathtakingly beautiful settings, and they can be caught within yards of the shoreline. Offshore reefs and sandbars,

classic surf beaches, small rocky coves or tranquil wooded estuaries all offer the chance of a bass. I’ve always loved the outdoors and fishing makes you feel these places, as well as seeing them. Daytime bassing lets you take in the full splendour of our gorgeous Cornish coastline, but night time fishing adds a whole other level of suspense and increased probability of success. You don’t have to be superman (or woman) to go fishing – there’s always somewhere you can go that suits your level of physical ability. Whether you’re 8 or 80, it’s never too late to take up this wonderful pastime. You don’t need deep pockets to do it either – yes, you can sell the family silver and buy the latest, top of the range gear if you want to, but it’s really not necessary – it’s being able to read the water, and knowing when and where the fish will be that matters.

If you’d like to read more about my bass fishing exploits, visit my website robinbradley.co.uk
