Probus Parish Players GET
ready to dive into an extraordinary production as Probus Parish Players proudly announce our fin-tastic 2024 pantomime, The Little Mermaid!
We invite you to be a part of this magical experience and swim on over to our launch night, happening on Saturday 22nd July, from 6 to 8 pm at Probus Village Hall.
Dr Alan M Kent
INmemoriam of Probus resident Dr Alan M Kent who passed away on Wednesday 20th July 2022 aged 55, following a short illness.
A year has passed, but Alan is not forgotten by Probus News who he encouraged, supported and contributed to regularly. Alan was a prolific author, playwright, poet and educator. He made a huge contribution to this village by recording and explaining its history as joint author of the Book of Probus. Alan’s work highlighted and celebrated Cornish language and culture, none more so than his last play, Give un Fitz - The Ballad of Bob Fitzsimmons, performed at Helston in April 2022 that sadly Alan never got to see. Rest in Peace, Alan.
This special event will provide the perfect opportunity for you to dive in and let your questions flow and discover everything there is to know about our upcoming pantomime.
Whether you have a passion for performing and want to make waves on stage, prefer to lend a helping fin behind the scenes, or simply want to be a bubbly spectator, this is an adventure you won't want to miss!
Don't flounder! Mark your calendars for auditions on 3rd September. Stay tuned for further updates and additional information as we swim along.

Probus Defibrillator Campaign
MANY
will remember the emergency at the top of Probus Church tower during the Coronation celebrations on 6th May. A life was saved that day due to prompt CPR, as well as speedy access to one of the two village defibrillators.
One of many challenges on the day was that someone had to sprint several hundred metres to the surgery to get the defibrillator, and then sprint back before it was taken to the top of the church tower. In cardiac arrest situations time is critical and a few minutes can make a huge difference to outcomes.
eight-year-old defibrillators at the surgery and filling station.
Along with the three mentioned, one is also being installed independently this summer at Probus Primary School. Once all four are operational, almost all properties in Probus village will have a defibrillator within 300m, and many well within that distance.
If you, as an individual, as a community group or business can help with this community initiative, please go to our crowdfunding page at:
https://crowdfunder.co.uk/p/probusdefibrillator-campaign-2023
Please support this project - every donation made is important no matter what size and will directly benefit the whole community of Probus as well as visiting friends and loved ones.
Note: The two existing defibrillators in Probus were purchased following fundraising by Probus Ladies Group. They are managed and serviced entirely by volunteers, with a maintenance budget from Probus Parish Council. Both defibrillators have been used several times.
Citizens Advice Cornwall FREE
and totally confidential Citizens Advice sessions are held in Probus Church fortnightly on Friday mornings. Next sessions are Friday 7th and 21st July, then 4th and 18th August.
Probus News Magazine has started a campaign to raise £4,000 to purchase three new defibrillators for the village. One would be located centrally in the village (hopefully at the village hall) and the other two will replace the existing
Appointments must be booked advance. Email Eleanor McCartney on nochildgoeshungryprobus@gmail. com or pop into church on any Friday between 8:45 am and 10 am and see her there.

A fond farewell from the rector
AFTERfive years as team rector of Probus, Ladock, Grampond with Creed and St Erme, it is time for my family and I to cross the Tamar and head back to England. I will be returning to education again, taking up a school chaplaincy post in Northamptonshire.
I want to thank all those who have helped and supported the work of the churches across the benefice during my time with you. An extra special thanks to all the clergy, lay ministry team, churchwardens, treasurers and PCCs whose tireless service to our churches has been second to none. I pray that the Lord will continue to bless you all.
It has certainly been a rather extraordinary five years. The real highpoints for me have all been in working with children and young people across the benefice (and is one of the reasons I am returning to education). The lowest point by far was being ordered to close the churches during the Covid-19 pandemic. The ‘tower incident’ in Probus certainly goes down as the most dramatic!
I may not have been everyone’s ideal as a rector and I am sure my failings are numerous. I have continually sought to balance the needs and priorities of a huge variety of people across a wide area. I hope and pray that you will be considerate to whoever follows in my footsteps who will, almost certainly, be covering an even larger area than I have had to. Please do continue to show your support and care for our local churches.
My final service as rector will be in Ladock Church on 23rd July at 11 am followed by lunch. All are welcome.
Finally: The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)
With every blessing, Fr.

Cornwall Councillor Update
ASyou all know, I have since my election, pledged to introduce 20 mph to Probus and I have now got further information on this. Cornwall Council has now agreed, in principle, to bring 20 mph to Probus and other villages throughout the Roseland area and the public consultation for the Truro/Roseland area, which includes Probus, starts Thursday 15th June and ends Thursday 6th July. You can see the plans, on site notices around the village and during office hours at New County Hall in Truro.
It is really important that you have your say on this consultation and you can do this in a number of ways. Visit https:// www.cornwall.gov.uk/TrafficConsult write to Infrastructure Design Group, CORMAC Consultancy, Radnor Road, Scorrier, TR16 5EH, email traffic@ cormacld.co.uk or call 01872 327 250.
I appreciate not everyone agrees with the 20 mph roll-out and your views are really important, so please do share these with me. Equally, I know many
people are in support and I would be grateful if you could complete the public consultation too.
I have recently noticed an increase in dog poo around the village and have asked the school to help with their excellent poster campaign again and I am looking into more signage and enforcement. However, it is always going to be up to residents to pick up after their dogs and I would ask that we all try to keep our beautiful village clean and safe for all.
Since my election I have helped hundreds of residents across my Electoral Division with casework issues, these have included housing, flooding, challenging parking fines, financial concerns and benefits and recently helping a resident to get a huge backpayment in missed council tax support. I can assist on most matters and am happy to help in anyway I can. I am available at the Hub (Portacabin) at Probus Village Hall, along with the parish council clerk and chair in the morning of the second Monday of every month. Karen

Ale Festival 2023
THEannual Ale Festival was held at Probus Comrades Club from 26th to 28th May. No fewer than 20 different ales were on sale, as well as 12 ciders, and a high proportion of them were from Cornwall. You can’t get much more local than Gwella (the Cornish word for ‘best’), which is brewed in Grampound –almost within staggering distance! Other Cornish classics included the ominously named Grim Reaper (6% ABV, from the Keltek Brewery in Redruth) and Lamanva (4% ABV, from the Verdant Brewing Company in Penryn). St Austell Brewery was represented by Hicks (5% ABV and named after the brewery’s founder, Walter Hicks) and Big Job (Proper Job’s big, bad brother at a hefty 7.2% ABV). The selection committee also sourced ales from as far north as Keighley in West Yorkshire (Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, 4.3% ABV) and as far east as Southwold in Suffolk (Adnam’s Ghostship, 4.5% ABV).
Local musicians provided entertainment over the weekend, with sessions from The Roosters, Isaac Salaman, Esther Baker, Talen Poore, Jenny Bishop and sea-shanty group Du Hag Owr.
The festival ended on the Bank Holiday Monday with ‘Dregs Day’, when ale and cider left over from the weekend were available for a minimum donation of £1 per pint to one of the festival’s chosen charities. (It’s rumoured that some attendees of the regular
monthly Acoustic Night nobly rose to the challenge of helping to empty the remaining barrels…)
This year’s charities are Man Down Cornwall, which provides peer-support talking groups all over Cornwall for men with mental health concerns, and Cornwall Air Ambulance. Ross Withers, founder of Man Down, gave a short talk on sponsors’ night explaining the work of the organisation and the Comrades Club committee were able to hand over to him the money raised from the Christmas raffle. The amount raised for charity at this year’s Ale Festival will be announced at a later date.
Huge thanks to all those who worked so hard to stage the festival: the Comrades Club committee and bar staff, the volunteers selling food in aid of Probus Fun Week, the sponsors, the musicians and, of course, everyone who turned up to enjoy the sunshine and the ale. Cheers everyone – here’s to next year!

PHCS
The Kenwyn leat system of Truro
ONWednesday 10th May members of Probus Historic Cornwall Society (PHCS) met at High Cross, Truro, for a guided walk of part of the leat system of Truro provided by the Kenwyn River. The walk was led by Martin Wright, who has a wealth of knowledge about Truro and so, much like the waters of the Kenwyn, our walk was diverted in order that we could see items of historic interest along the way.
The leats were installed as a means of providing drinking water for horses and for washing down the street, which in Victorian times would have been heavily soiled with horse droppings. Part of the water was diverted into Victoria Gardens to run the fountain before running back down into the river. The leats are partly open and partly underground and consist of the main flow and branch
flows. The level of water in the leats is dictated by the level of the river and, as a result of works to try to prevent flooding in the city, the level of water in the leats is much less than previously.
The walk took us through some lovely, peaceful parts of Truro and, on the way, Martin pointed out, amongst many other things, an interesting boundary marker from the Great Western Railway, mounted on a piece of railway line.

Sizzling bangers and red hot wanging!!
Roseland U3A UPCOMING
THURSDAY
8th June saw the Probus Club of Probus hold their second annual ‘Sausage Sizzle’ in the field at the bottom of Treviglas Lane. Over 30 members and partners enjoyed an afternoon of BBQ sausages served by Chairman Ray Schofield, followed by an assortment of games, including ‘Bush Croquet’, won by Sheila Bing and David Meggs, golf ball pitching into a barrel (which no-one successfully completed), beach boules.
The highlight of the afternoon, ‘welly wanging’, was brilliantly organised by Mike and Ginny Cluett. The ladies’ competition was eventually won by Laura Van Kempen Wilson who threw her welly an amazing 43 feet. The mens clear champion, using his superior knowledge of flight dynamics and high altitude windspeed, was David Meggs who threw a magnificent 69 feet!
Summer project?
ASyou can see in the photo the pebble mosaic below the WW1 memorial by the village hall needs some maintenance. Does anyone fancy a summer project to spruce it up?

THErecent hot and dry weather has badly impacted the work of the churchyard restoration group. We were hoping to sow seeds and plant flowers but have had to curtail this as they would have struggled to survive in these conditions. The grass has been cut at last and the team have raked it up and stacked it to allow it to compost down.
Work is going well on tidying up neglected graves and we are very grateful to the volunteers who join us each Wednesday morning and the morning of the second Saturday each month. If you are free then please consider joining us – the work is very satisfying.
We have switched off the swift calling system for this year now. Several swifts have been seen flying around the church but we don't know if any have nested there, we'll have to wait and see. One swift did get into the main body of the church when the doors were left open. We don't know if it managed to get out but it was distressing to see it trying to do so. If you visit the church, please ensure you close the mesh doors to prevent birds flying in.
Swift numbers have fallen dramatically in recent years, as have those of the hedgehog which have halved since 2007. They now stand at less than one million, down from 30 million in the 1950s. Modern farming practices and the loss of hedgerows means that gardens are very important to their survival. There is a good and safe app that can be downloaded called “Hedgehog Street” which enables you to report sightings of
them and gives lots of other information too.
There are many ways we can help hedgehogs.
• Cover drains and put bricks at the side of ponds to give them a way out if they get in.
• Remove sports and fruit netting when not in use to avoid them getting entangled.
• If you have to use slug pellets, place them under a slate which is inaccessible to hedgehogs, but try to avoid their use – a hedgehog will do a better job.
• Consider leaving a patch of your garden wild with leaf litter and wood to provide a home for slugs and beetles for the hedgehogs to eat.
• Providing fresh water in a bowl is good especially during hot weather. Food such as minced meat, tinned dog or cat food (not fish based), crushed cat biscuits or chopped up boiled eggs can be left out – but never feed hedgehogs milk as it can cause diarrhoea.
• Check for hedgehogs before using strimmers or mowers, and also compost heaps before forking over. If you are having a bonfire, check it thoroughly before lighting.
• If you do have hedgehog visitors, make a simple home for them with planks, and if you share a fence with your neighbour consider making a gap in it to enable them to forage there easily instead of going on the road. These “hedgehog highways” are really important to keep them away from traffic.
And finally, calling all Tesco shoppers! Probus Primary School has successfully applied to be one of their blue token projects to provide funding for their outdoor activities which include the allotment they use. Please help to support them.

PLAYERS,
coaches, family and friends gathered in the garden of the Hawkins Arms on 17th June for the end-of-season awards presentation, with each player receiving a trophy engraved with their name. The individual team coaches and managers all paid tribute to the hard work and dedication of the young players in turning up for training every week and giving their all to the ‘beautiful game’. For each team there was also a players’ award, given to the person the team members felt had made an outstanding contribution, and a manager’s award.
Thanks were also given to the parents for ferrying the players to and from away fixtures and helping with fundraising throughout the season and, of course, to the club’s sponsors. The main awards were:
Under 9s
Manager’s player, Hugo
Players’ player, Brendan
Under 10s
Manager’s player Wilf
Players’ player Sonny

In addition to the individual trophies, there were also four special awards:
The Mickey Duff Memorial Trophy, was presented to the whole U9s team.
Second up was a celebration presentation to the U12s, who won the Kernow League without losing a single game – 16 out of 16 games and an impressive total of 111 goals! In addition, three of the team were in the top five of the league’s best players.
The Simon Wilcox Trophy was presented to the U14 coach Ben Hall (photo above).
Finally, a new award – the Tom Kennedy Trophy, in memory of the club’s founder who passed away last year. This year’s winner was Jason Chapman for his outstanding contribution to youth football in Probus. Jason manages both the U10 and U12 teams and was instrumental in restarting postpandemic Saturday morning football in
the village that not only is very popular in the area but also provides a stream of young boys and girls that go on to join newly forming teams in Probus Youth FC.

Church building fund appeal
LASTmonth we published details of the extensive repair work needed to ensure the future of the church. It may surprise you to learn that the church gets no central funding for the upkeep of the building – it only receives what is given by people who value its continued existence in our village. The church is at the very centre of village life and it would be an incalculable loss if it were forced to close its doors. We would lose not only an essential community hub that provides muchneeded practical and spiritual support, but also a building that is the focus
of so many of our most important life events – a place where generations of Probus residents have exchanged their marriage vows, christened their children and buried their loved ones.
We do hope you’ll support any fundraising events. However, if you’re able to make an additional donation, you’ll be doing your bit to ensure the survival of this historic building for generations to come. Huge thanks to all those of you who have already contributed. If you haven’t already made a donation and would like to do so, here are the details:
• Make a bank transfer to Probus Parish Church (sort code 30-98-76, account number 01999176), giving ‘Building Fund’ as the reference; this ensures that all of your donation will go towards the renovations.

Royal Cornwall Show CONGRATULATIONS
to the MidCornwall Woodturners Group who as part of the team in the Forestry Area achieved 2nd place in show with their forestry and woodland colleagues.
With warm and dry weather, the Royal Cornwall Show was back to its prepandemic best. With nearly 120,000 visitors, more trade stands than anyone could sensibly see in a day, and interesting displays and competitions in the arenas. And if livestock, agriculture and big machinery wasn’t your thing, there was terrific food, drink, music, dance, art and crafts everywhere.
In the main arena, the RAF Falcons parachute team showed off their incredible skills and courage by freefalling before accurately landing in very strong wind. Next year’s event will take place on 6th, 7th and 8th June - put it in your diary now.
