Community First Responder
COMMUNITY NEWS AND NOTICES • The Hawkins Arms for having a collection tin and quiz donations • Probus School Filling Station for having a collection tin • The Front Line Emergency Equipment Trust (FLEET) for making the first donation
A massive thank you to everyone who supported our recent Community First Responder fundraising campaign. I was amazed by how enthusiastic the village in their support, and I'm pleased to say we reached our target and recently had the new equipment delivered.
The new equipment is shown in the photo (left), from left to right: automatic blood pressure cuff, digital thermometer, pulse oximeter and blood glucose kit. Thanks everyone! Nik Budden - Probus Community First Responder
It has already been put to use in the village, and made a genuine difference to the patient's outcome. I was able to make informed decisions about the patient’s condition and was able to make them more comfortable before the crew arrived.
A big thank you to the individual commitments from everyone on the Crowdfunder website, plus thanks need to go to: • Councillor Bob Egerton for supporting a Community Fund application • Collins of Probus Limited for supporting a local cause • Probus Parish Players for raising money at the pantomime

Editorial
But this magazine is not just about the past, there is a lot going on in Probus today, certainly plenty to look forward to this spring and summer, and we’ve tried hard to ensure that’s reflected in the magazine.
Firstly, thanks to all contributors to this edition. As last month’s edition was the 21st anniversary edition of Probus News, I commented that we didn’t have a copy of the first edition in our archive. Within 36 hours of publication, in came an email from Nick Arthur who had kindly scanned his copy of the first edition. Two days later, Cherry Taylor graciously donated her original copy having kept it in a biscuit tin in her garage for 21 years. Thank you both.
Lastly, well done to everyone who supported Nik Budden in his fundraising for additional Community First Responder kit. It’s good to hear that some of it has already been put to use.
Village Hall notice The hall committee met on Wednesday 10th April to discuss recent complaints of noise and nuisance at the hall. We have made some amendments to our terms and conditions of hire, which we hope will go some way to prevent further disruption to our neighbours, e.g. insisting that music ends by 11.30 and that all events are over and the hall is locked by midnight. We have agreed to investigate further measures at our next meeting on 8th May. Meanwhile, we wish to assure local residents that we will do everything in our power to prevent nuisance to those who live around the hall. The committee wish to point out that noise nuisance is something that can be dealt with by the police. Should noise become an issue we would urge residents to contact the police allowing them to take action against offenders.
I have also kindly been lent a copy of a booklet called ‘I remember when...’ dated 1982 containing a series of 21 individual memories about Probus from years gone by. It’s a fascinating read and I hope to serialise this over the coming months.
We will keep the community updated with any further changes to the way the hall is managed in respect to noise nuisance. Frank Fuller, PVH Letting Secretary 7

Probus FC seniors Probus first team have had some mixed results over the last couple of months, winning five games, drawing one and losing four, including a 5-3 loss in the league cup quarter final. With five games left the team currently sits 5th in the Trelawney League Division 1, and are looking for a strong finish with a possible 5th promotion in a row, which will put them into the Premier Division. The reserves team have had mixed fortunes losing six games, but a recent upturn in form saw them win two games. They currently sit lower mid-table of Division 4 with three games left.

The club is strong with training regularly attracting over 20 players. The teams mainly consist of 17 to 20-year-olds and it looks good for the future of the club, with some current U16s also making their debuts this season for the reserves. On another note, I will be standing down from my

ing CCTV evidence and witnessing sentencing. Year 9 art students recently created artwork for the annual Combined Truro Schools Art Exhibition 2019. This successful arts programme, now in its 14th year, involved a series of collaborative creative workshops undertaken at five secondary schools in the Truro area, with visiting professional artists. This year, the theme is ‘Our World, Our Planet’ and we look forward to seeing the resulting artwork in the exhibition at Truro Cathedral in the summer term.
Our Junior Choir gave a fantastic performance in the regional Music for Youth Festival at Truro Methodist Church, as part of a national initiative celebrating young musical talent across the UK. The varied afternoon programme included music from students of all ages with bands, orchestras and choirs playing jazz, funk and wind genres. Thirteen students from our Roseland Rock School also took part in the Music for Youth Festival, performing in the ‘contemporary’ category at The Old Bakery Studios, Malpas, Truro.
Year 10 students attended the Cornwall Skills Show 2019, which showcased the vast range of careers available throughout the country. The event welcomed over 2,500 Cornish students aged between 15 and 16 years and consisted of hands-on activities led by further and higher education colleges and universities, and over 100 businesses covering eight key growth sectors.
Recently, our Year 8 Netball Team took part in a county-wide netball tournament. Mrs Case, Teacher of PE, said that it was fantastic to see how motivated and ambitious the girls were, they created some tremendous shooting opportunities. The competition was fierce, and the team had two wins during the tournament.

Dancers from Years 7 to 11 took to the stage at the Regal Theatre, Redruth, for the annual Carrick Dance event. This popular yearly showcase celebrates dance from all around the county and features talented young dancers of all ages from primary and secondary schools, sixth form colleges and beyond. A group of selected Year 10 students attended a careers session at Truro Crown Court. They undertook a tour of the court and had the opportunity of a direct Q&A session with a Judge, who took the time to answer questions. Students also observed numerous court hearings, which were fascinating. The cases were varied, ranging from fines, watch15
Wednesday Walking Group
Spread across all the walks we have had an average of 19 walkers and the highest number, 28, on three occasions.
We started the walking group on Wednesday 9th May 2018 and were surprised to find 21 people turn up for the first walk where we went to Grampound via the old ‘Roman Road’ . After a coffee stop at Grampound village shop, we followed the river path, then up to Barteliver, through Trewithen, past Sunrising and then back to The Square. It was a resounding success.
The walks, generally with a coffee stop half way round, have been locally in Probus, Grampound, Grampound Road and Ladock and many further afield such as The Roseland, Truro, Trelissick, Tresillian, Holywell Bay and Crantock, Mylor, Flushing and St Agnes. We have walked the 'Clay Trails', including The Eden Project and Wheal Martyn, St. Feock and Come to Good, Pentewan, The Great Flat Lode around Carn Brea, Goss Moor, Luxulyan and to Rough Tor and Brown Willy which is the highest point above sea level in Cornwall.
Since that first walk, we have walked almost every Wednesday morning and have nearly completed a whole year. At the time of writing this (April 3rd), the walking group has been ‘running' for 48 weeks and have only had to cancel due to poor weather on five occasions which is remarkable.
Tim and I would like to thank everyone who has walked with us on a Wednesday and have helped to make the Walking Group a resounding success.
16
Let’s hope the walks, the friendships forged and the generally good Wednesday weather continue for another year and beyond.
intriguing for me as I’ve been delving into archives to find out about what was happening here in and around our village to prevent or slow a mainland invasion of Britain. My research so far has led to some interesting findings about the village and those who were involved in anti-invasion and general Home Front activities.
If you haven’t joined our group for a walk but would like to give it a try, please telephone me on 884495 or Tim on 884574. Terry Hodge and Tim Joyce.
I’m planning on sharing my findings in the Probus News and would love to speak to anyone who has any stories to tell about relatives who lived in the village during the war or anyone who experienced wartime life in the village themselves.
WW2 research plea On 9th May 74 years ago, the people of the Channel Islands were finally liberated after five long years of German occupation. The physical scars on the island's landscapes remain to this day, reminders of a time when a little bit of Britain suffered under German rule. As part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall, the islands became the most heavily fortified area of Europe and those islanders who had not boarded the evacuation boats before the arrival of Hitler’s troops, became part of the Fuhrer’s plans for a ‘model occupation.’
Alternatively, if you know of any locations or buildings in the village that were used for wartime purposes, I'd be grateful if you could get in touch. Do you know any local stories relating to D-Day, the Home Guard, the Probus Auxiliary Patrol, the false invasion alarm on Saturday 7th September 1940 or the Probus Invasion Committee? Please contact me, Ryan Davies, on 07799 405090 or email ryaninthenewsroom@yahoo.co.uk. N.B. If you are interested in finding out more about the occupation of the Channel Islands, I made an audio documentary which can be found at Under the Watchful Eye - life on occupied Jersey 19401945 https://youtu.be/-konN8637s8
For five years, I travelled to the islands to mark the anniversary of Liberation Day. I was fortunate to speak to many islanders who had lived through the occupation and had experienced the hardships and shortages that life under German rule had forced upon them. My WW2 artefact collection grew as I added objects from the occupation and I became somewhat obsessed with what those five years meant to Britain and how close our country came to suffering the same fate as those loyal islanders. This 9th May, I’ll once again be remembering the occupation and tuning into the radio stations covering the commemorations. However, in recent months, the occupation has become even more 17

metal railings as over time it can cause damage. Like all legumes, they develop nodules on their roots to absorb atmospheric nitrogen and therefore will not require feeding, perhaps only a phosphate or potash fertiliser when necessary.
Sometimes also called wistaria and in some parts of the world known as blue rain because of the effect the falling flower petals create, their colour varies between blue, violet, purple, pink and white and are mostly scented, some stronger than others. The length of the racemes (flower clusters) also varies, with W. floribunda ‘Macrobotrys' having racemes up to about 100cm long. The flowers are edible, can be used raw in salads, to make cordial or wine and even fritters as a dessert. Avoid the other parts of the plant though as it can cause a stomach upset. Wisteria can sometimes take many years to flower, so I would suggest buying them with visible buds/ flowers (April to June) to make sure it is of flowering age. Introducing this plant to a garden needs to be considered carefully as they are vigorous climbers and can grow quite big so will require a lot of space and robust support systems. It can, however, be kept very neat and tidy through regular pruning, some are even grown as Bonsai. Don't allow them to grow on roofs, behind guttering, around downpipes and
The first wisteria to arrive in Europe came from America in the early 1700s. There used to be two recognised American species, but after recent DNA testing, it was discovered they are the same, W. frutescens. The oriental species only appeared in Europe nearly a hundred years later with the more

common ones available in the UK today being: W. sinensis (Chinese) and two from Japan, W. floribunda and W. brachybotrys.
Probus Parish Council Notes from the council meeting on 18th March by David Meggs. The PCC met to discuss three planning applications, all were approved and two planning decisions. The main meeting covered the latest Police report, just two crimes and the 106 money for replacement of some playground equipment, still not received from Wainhomes (but notice has been served by Cornwall Council so should be forthcoming soon). The Bee Eco plan to plant wild flowers is ongoing and will be open for discussion with residents at a future PCC meeting. An area of 500 square metres will require 1 kilo of seed at a cost of £180. Cornwall Councillor Bob Egerton then gave his report and informed the council that average speed cameras were to be installed in Grampound. Discussion followed regarding the proposals to light the war memorial and it was agreed to pursue the installation of solar powered lighting subject to costing. Various uses for the S106 money was then covered including investigation of a cycle path from Probus to Tresillian. The final debate was related to the reserved parking in the Village Hall car park, and the padlocked security posts.
The largest blossoming plant on earth is a Chinese wisteria in California. Planted in 1895 it is estimated to weigh 250 tons and covers an area nearly the size of a football pitch. There are two W. floribunda ‘Macrobotrys’ in Trewithen Gardens, both over a hundred years old, one in the walled garden and the other growing into a large plane tree on the way to the ponds.

I think of wisteria as the diva of the plant world, high maintenance but the scent and visual spectacle when in flower is showstopping. Will van Zyl Will is a Probus-based garden consultant www.the-garden-route.uk 19
Sadly we had to postpone the free CPR Training with Kate Woolven scheduled for 16th April as only four people had expressed interest. The village hall has been rebooked for the evening of Tuesday 24th October and we’ll publicise it nearer the time to see if we can generate enough interest to rerun.
Liz Harper
March 2020 - Probus in spring bloom?
We are very sad to announce that Liz Harper passed away on Monday 15th April after a short illness. Liz was involved in many village activities including the Church Choir, Mothers Union and until fairly recently helping with reading at Probus School. Liz was a true friend to many in Probus and will be sorely missed.
A couple of people have mentioned that it would be lovely if we could plant some of the green spaces, verges etc. in the village with spring bulbs like Tresillian and other nearby villages have done. Is anyone interested in joining together to do some fundraising to buy bulbs and then arrange community planting sessions across the village this autumn? If so, do get in touch.

Cinema update Summer 2019 has some tantalising offerings in prospect, writes Matthew Humby, Duty Manager Plaza Cinema, Truro. Although it will already be in cinemas by the time you read this article, no overview of this summer can ignore the inevitable box office behemoth that is ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ As if The Avengers franchise were not popular enough already, this instalment, which is the product of meticulous planning, will see the culmination of storylines the foundations for which were laid over the course of more than twenty preceding parts. And chief among those storylines will be the gargantuan cliff-hanger which concluded the last Avengers movie. For a summer blockbuster with action and spectacle on a ridiculous scale, look no further than ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters.’ Anyone who waited around for the teasing cut-scene at the end of the credits for ‘Kong: Skull Island’(or who is familiar with the original Japanese monster movies) will already know that Godzilla is just one of a varied array of titanic beasts destined to fight each other for supremacy over the Earth. The only question to be resolved is where Humankind places in the newly reshuffled pecking order.
Another eagerly awaited sequel, though on a slightly humbler scale, is ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum', in which Keanu Reeves returns as the titular hitman with his signature brand of "gun-fu" action. This time out there is a contract on John's head, and he must fight all-comers to survive. Amidst all these sequels and remakes, ‘Yesterday' stands out as a rare one-off. A romantic comedy written by Richard Curtis (‘Notting Hill', ‘Love Actually') and directed by Danny Boyle (‘Trainspotting', ‘Slumdog Millionaire'), it turns on a simple magical conceit which sees a struggling singer-songwriter suddenly transported to a world in which no-one has ever heard the music of The Beatles. With the freedom to shamelessly plagiarise Lennon & McCartney, he becomes an overnight sensation, playing to hordes of adoring fans and recording with Ed Sheeran but haunted by guilt and the possibility that he might have missed his one chance of true love.
Another rare as hen’s teeth original arrives in July in the form of Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film (by his count) ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.’ Starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie, it (very) loosely retells the events surrounding the Manson family and provides a heady blast of life in the film industry during one of its most creatively fertile periods. Although the trailer does not give much away, Tarantino's take looks to be thick with the atmosphere of the time. 21

Probus Art Exhibition
selling their work. While space is always at a premium, it’s not limited to paintings - the exhibition is open to a wide range of creative arts, with Cornwall Wood Carvers previously exhibiting their work too.
Probus News is pleased to promote this year’s Probus Art Exhibition that once again will be held in Probus Church. The main organiser is long-term Probus resident Vanessa McGill. Vanessa, who is currently studying Fine Art at the University of Falmouth, needed a logo for the exhibition and she asked fellow student Taylor Jones who is in his first year studying graphic design, if he could help.
If you are interested in helping out, or to enquire about exhibiting your work, contact Vanessa via probus.art.exhibition@gmail.com or search for Probus Art Exhibition on Facebook. Taylor Jones bio: I am a colourblind Graphic Designer with zero arts qualifications. In fact, I have had quite an unconventional upbringing; home-educated while my parents were starting a company, learning from experiences rather than textbooks. I enjoyed both the analytics of Maths and Science and the expressiveness of English and Art. My mother was a fine artist, my father was a Navy chef, and I have become a blend of the two: a breed of expression + discipline, of art + science. Graphic Design is the medium through which I can exercise both.
Taylor was given a series of images from both inside and outside the church, and he’s managed to create, what we believe is, a simple but clever design. It will be very obvious to some and perhaps, not so apparent to others. If you are intrigued, and without giving too much away, stand in the church and look towards the altar. In previous years the art exhibition has had a good following with many local artists exhibiting and

Happy Birthday Joan
£500 to Cornwall Blood Bikes.
Hearty congratulations to Joan Unsworth who had her 101st birthday on 7th April. Joan is a longtime Probus resident and former teacher at Veryan Primary School.
There is no membership fee and every member receives a monthly newsletter keeping them up to date with the latest advice and information about products and ways to prevent things such as Parastomal Hernias. Once again we will be holding an Open Day in 2019 when anyone can visit and speak directly to the manufacturers of the products we use and also the support garments that are available. This will be taking place at St. Erme Community Centre on 29th June from 10pm to 2pm and no invite is necessary. Please feel free to come along with your family or friends. The Stoma and Colorectal nurses will be present as will support groups from a number of other organisations.
Cornwall Ostomy Support Since our last update the group has continued to support people with or about to have some form of stoma or a reversal. A stoma can be formed for many reasons but after a recovery period there is no reason for most people to live a full and active life.
Full details of the group along with information about travel, insurance and how to contact us can be found at www.cornwallostomysupport. org.uk or you can private message us through our Facebook page at Facebook.com/groups/cornwallostomysupport. This is a closed group.
In the last year we have grown to over 180 active members and we also have 70 plus members on our Facebook site. We support our members in many ways but are also keen to support the community. We are run by volunteers and as such have minimal running costs and last year held a total of 29 activities ranging from meetings, quizzes, social activities, meals out and Christmas lunches.
If you would like to meet us, our meetings are held at Carnon Downs Village Hall on the first Tuesday of each month at 2pm. Please feel free to bring someone with you. We always have a speaker with tea, coffee and cake available. Quiz nights are held at the same venue on the third Wednesday of each month at 7pm.
In the last year we have donated £1500 to the Stoma Nurses towards the refurbishment of their waiting room, provided a new fridge for the Outpatients Department, supported a family with a respite break, and donated £1000 towards the Cornwall Air Ambulance’s new helicopter and also
Please remember we are available to talk and support you when and wherever you feel comfortable. You are not alone as there are well over 1200 people in Cornwall with some form of stoma. Ken Jones 34

14 miles of Cornish history On 8th April, Probus Old Cornwall Society welcomed back Tamsin Mallett, an archivist at the County Records Office, to give an update on the progress of Kresen Kernow (Cornish for Cornwall Centre), the new County Records Office, which will be opening this summer. In 1999 the old Records Office, at the rear of Old County Hall, was deemed not fit for purpose and the hunt for a suitable replacement location began. The redundant Redruth Brewery site was chosen and, with the help of ÂŁ11.7 million from the Lottery Fund and ÂŁ5.6 million from Cornwall Council, one-third of this historic building was purchased.
For the first time, the public will be able to see staff preserving documents through an internal window. There will be 14 miles of shelving holding 1.5 million documents in 2 strongrooms. That's a lot of Cornish history!
Construction work started in November 2016 and the site is due to open later this year. Many of the original features of the buildings have been preserved and, where parts had to be rebuilt, the original footprint was retained and original rooflines reinstated.
Two fascinating videos about the new archive centre are available on: www.cornwall.gov.uk/community-and-living/ records-archives-and-cornish-studies/kresenkernow-cornwalls-new-archive-centre/ or simply search for Kresen Kernow.
Tamsin was keen to point out that Kresen Kernow will not just be for academics. There will be a cafe serving coffee and cake and comfy chairs in the library. 40

May is a month of celebration within the church. The period of Eastertide continues throughout the month of May, and so the church continues to rejoice in the resurrection of Christ. The end of the month is marked by Ascension Day. This is the day that recalls Christ’s ascension into heaven at the conclusion of his earthly ministry. The event is followed ten days later by the church’s birthday in June with the feast of Pentecost. The words of the Angel to the Disciples, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven?’ reminds us that although Christ’s ministry on earth is complete, the time of the church is about to begin, and so, the church looks out to those in need of the love of Christ in their lives.
