Spring daffodils

T

WO years ago, we started a community initiative to raise money to buy daffodil bulbs and plant them in two of the village entrances. With support from the parish council, this magazine, and several families, we negotiated with Fentongollan to purchase almost 4000 bulbs. A group of volunteers gathered in the autumn of 2019 to plant them all. The results over the past two winters have been fantastic - a massive bloom of yellow and a boost to anyone passing. However, we didn’t plant all entrances to the village, so now is the time to address that. The Parish Council have again kindly

offered a grant towards costs, and several families in the village have also made donations, so I thank them all for that. If you are interested and able to help, either with a small donation or to volunteer with planting, please get in contact with me (Editor). I will purchase as many bulbs as possible, ready for planting later in late September.

A message from Rev Joachim

S

EPTEMBER feels like a time of new beginnings. It is probably the memory of education that looms over us. From our own time in school and from taking children to and from school. We’ve had a summer of relative peace which has helped to relax us all after the challenging times we’ve lived through. We’ve had the opportunity to remind

ourselves of what normality looks like, what a blessed relief that has been! September is, I think, a good time for us to begin to think about how we move on from here. What are our next steps together as a community? We may want to think about rejoining/restarting activities which have been on hold for quite such a long time (coming to church is an excellent choice by the way!). We may want to start re-making other connections that have been lost, or that have been strained by past events. It is time to really start to live our lives again. Not simply forgetting where we have been, but having learned from it, moving on with courage. The biggest tragedy would be to continue living (as psalm 23 reminds us) in the valley of the shadow of death, rather than heading to pastures new to refresh and revive our souls. With Every Blessing, Rev’d Joachim Foot To take care of yourself and others: • get double jabbed • wash or sanitise hands regularly • wear a mask indoors, in crowds or on public transport • keep indoor spaces well ventilated • keep your distance from others where possible

Mid Cornwall Turners Open Day Saturday 11th September 2021 10.00 am till 4.00pm Probus Village Hall. Free entry – all welcome. Live demonstrations throughout the day. Exhibition of turned and carved work. Raffle and home-made refreshments

Mid Cornwall Turners

A

LTHOUGH the ancient art and craft of woodturning dates back some 2,000 years, our club was formed as recently as 2004 and has been based at Probus Village Hall from the outset. The object of the club is to foster a wider understanding and appreciation of lathe turning as a traditional and contemporary craft and art form amongst the general public, amateur and hobbyist turners and professional turners.

to 96 years, together with a number of enthusiasts who have expressed an interest in the club over the past 18 months. Members of the public are also very welcome to attend and we look forward to meeting you on Saturday 11th September when there will be an exhibition of work, raffle, and home made refreshments and on-going live demonstrations throughout the day. We are pleased to be joined by Cornwall Woodcarvers, represented by Roger Gluyas and a colleague . They too will demonstrate and have a display of work. Mid Cornwall Turners hope to start back with our regular monthly meetings in the village hall on Tuesday 5th October at 7 pm. Our training classes were fully booked before COVID-19 struck and we hope to return to training as soon as it is deemed safe. Training is quite heavily slanted to safe practice, health and safety, and the correct use of basic tools and how to maintain them in a sharp and therefore, useable condition. Students often begin with a simple spindle-turning project like a garden dibber, before moving on to bowl turning and more advanced projects. What sort of things do we make, you may well ask? Well, almost anything that can be turned from wood, acrylic or pewter. Further information is available on the club’s website: www.midcornwallturners.com or from the club secretary, Richard Elliott at: secretary@midcornwallturners.com.

The main function of our Open Day is to welcome back our members, numbering around 40 and ranging in age from 14 September 2021 | 9

bridge over the River Tamar and looks to be about an arranged marriage. It is interesting to think that such plays were being produced close to Probus in St Stephen in Brannel - and that the play might resemble what was once produced at Probus’s own playing place which once existed at Sorn Field near Trewithen. Pascon agan Arluth is a Passion poem about the life of Christ. It has associations with the parish of Sancreed in West Cornwall, and the manuscripts contains a number of illustrations depicting events in the 259 stanzas, each consisting of eight lines. The Charter Fragment stands at present as the first true piece of Cornish literature and is estimated to have been written sometime around 1380–1400.

The Charter Fragment is a small fragment from a secular Medieval play, written on the back of a land charter, orginally about Meledor near St Stephen in Brannel. The fragment mentions a

Editorial

H

ELLO everyone and welcome to another edition of your village magazine. Thanks, as always, to all contributors, and there are a lot of you this month, and it’s much appreciated. If you are planning events in the next few months, do get in touch so we can spread the word. Likewise, if you have updates or news to share from your part of the village, then get in touch. If you fancy turning your hand to writing, and would like to contribute a regular (or occasional) column, then do give me a call. I’m really keen to get some new writers onboard, to help keep the magazine fresh and relevant, but we could also do with a hand! At the time of writing this, the Comrades Club have just announced their first live music event for 18 months, so well done to the committee for getting that organised. It promises to be a rocking evening, and personally, I’m looking forward to it immensely, as I’m sure many others are too. This month marks the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York. Dave Meggs, was there that day, and witnessed the unfolding tragedy. I’m very grateful that he agreed to share his experiences on pages 20-22.. Our AGM is on Wednesday 6th October at 7:45 pm, upstairs in the Comrades Club. If you wish to pass on thoughts, comments or suggestions about your village magazine, or just to find out more, then please do come along. All are welcome. As seems to be the norm, August was disappointing weather wise, so here’s hoping for an Indian Summer! John 16 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 260

Probus Bowling Club

B

Y the time you read this we will be into our last week or so of bowling outdoors.

We have a home friendly against Chacewater on Friday 3rd September at 2 pm and our finals day on Wednesday 8th. Shortly after we will be closing the green with a drive and hopefully a BBQ. We missed a lot of friendlies this summer due to other clubs being unable to raise a team of 12 players willing to travel or in the case of Redruth they just cancelled all friendlies without telling anyone. Most of our club competitions went ahead and a good time was had by all. We even gained a few new members, two of whom you can see in the photograph below.

W

HEN witnessing any of the above in our village (or anywhere else), would residents please be aware that Probus Parish Council is NOT the place to report such matters as we have no jurisdiction. It is important that complaints or reports go directly to the police whose response time is relative to the severity of the incident and the number of reports received. Speed of reporting is also very important. Reports can be made anonymously and we receive regular monthly updates on all recorded incidents.

ONGRATULATIONS to our Midweek XI who have won the St Newlyn East Evening League by defeating Gorran CC in the final on 4th August. They are also through to the final of the St Newlyn East Evening Cup when they will play Pencarrow (away). The not so good news is that it is looking increasingly probable that our 1st XI will be playing in Cornwall County Division 1 next season. We have some very talented young players emerging though and this will give the club an opportunity to rebuild for the future in what is still a very strong league. www.grcc.play-cricket.com

In New York on 9/11

D

AVE Meggs, a retired British Airways (BA) Captain, recalls the tragic events of Tuesday 11th September 2001, now known universally as 9/11. Dave has never before spoken in detail about this day, and we are grateful that he shared his story with the Probus News.

warm sunshine at 8 am. Having enjoyed a leisurely breakfast we walked back just before 9 am and saw a United Airlines 767 fly past very low, we thought. As we got into our hotel we saw on the television the North Tower smoking and the aircraft we had just seen, flew into the South Tower.

‘I reported to the Compass Centre at Heathrow, on Monday 10th September 2001 at 7 am to operate the BA117 flight to New York’s JFK airport departing at 8:30 am. There were no problems on the journey and we arrived slightly ahead of schedule at 11:15 am Eastern Standard Time. Having cleared immigration and

customs my crew and I were coached to our hotel, Fitzpatrick Grand Central, situated on Manhattan on the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 44th Street. At 5 pm I met with my co-pilot in the hotel bar for a few drinks before dinner and he expressed his desire to breakfast at the top of the Twin Towers (the New York World Trade Centre) the following morning. Luckily for him he didn’t achieve this as he bumped into some old friends in the bar and having made a night of it he joined me for breakfast the next day. On the morning of 11th September we walked to the diner on 45th street in the 20 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 260

We walked across to Park Avenue and could see both towers billowing smoke and were horrified by the sight of figures jumping to their deaths from the higher floors. Just before 10 am the South tower collapsed throwing clouds of dust up the surrounding streets, followed by

the North Tower collapsing less than 30 minutes later. I tried to contact my family to reassure them of my safety but there was no mobile phone signal, the masts had been on top of the twin towers. I finally got through on a land-line and also called BA in London to tell them that Manhattan had been locked down and no-one could leave the island. I was told that the US Federal Aviation Authority had grounded all flights and was not allowing any to land in or overfly the US, so we would not be flying home that evening.

That afternoon the smell of electrical burning and concrete dust pervaded all of Manhattan and the hotels were all full as people had not been allowed to leave the island. The bars were all full but silent as everyone was glued to the televisions listening to every grim detail. Every so often someone would leave the bar, you would hear a glass smash, then they would return. It would seem that everyone had lost many friends that day. The next morning, I, along with other BA Captains, attended a briefing at the BA hotel on 55th street. We were told that there was one crew held at a hotel by the airport and they would be the first to leave, my crew would be second. I told my crew to meet in the hotel lobby at 4

pm for our departure, only to be told at 3 pm that the FAA had once again closed the airspace. By this time restaurants and hotels were running short of food as nothing had been allowed to enter, or leave, Manhattan. Fortunately the blockade was lifted in the early evening. Several of my crew expressed concerns about flying so soon after the tragedies on Tuesday but we were able to reassure them that security would be extremely tight and that it would be safe to fly. On Friday we finally made it to the airport and departing as BA116 on runway 31 Left our routing took us straight over the smoking remains of the twin towers, a very sobering sight.

Arriving in Heathrow 10:55 am on Saturday we were taken to the Compass Centre to be de-briefed by management before being allowed home’. Once home in Cornwall, Dave had a day off, but on the following Monday, he was back in the pilot seat, flying from Heathrow to Philadelphia. A couple of months later, on 6th February 2002, Dave was rostered once more to fly to New York. As if flying back into New York for the first time after such a traumatic experience was not enough pressure, this flight was with BA’s chief pilot, where Dave was to be assessed whether or not he could become a ‘Route Check Captain’, an internal BA certification that allowed him to assess Continued on next page September 2021 | 21

and qualify other pilots on the LHR to JFK route. Dave passed. ‘It was only three years ago that I returned to the site and went up the new World Trade Centre and viewed the Memorial Pool.

I thought this was a fitting tribute to the 2,600+ people who died there not forgetting the 92 on American Airlines 011, 65 on United Airlines 175, 64 on American Airlines 077 at Washington, with 125 who perished at the Pentagon, and 44 on United 093 that crashed into

a field at Shanksville, Pennsylvania’. Aftermath: The terrorist attack on 9/11, triggered a massive military response. The US, supported by UK and other nations’ forces including local Afghans were tasked with dismantling al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and removing the Taliban from power. In December 2001, the United Nations established the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to oversee military operations in the country and train Afghan forces. In the years since, over 3,500 members of ISAF were killed including 2,355 from the USA, 456 from the UK and the remainder from 29 other nations. The number of Afghan casualties (as of April 2021) are estimated to be over 47,000 civilians and 69,000 military or police.* So, despite huge sacrifices and unimaginable human suffering over 20 years, the Taliban are back in power in Afghanistan. What happens next is anyone’s guess. * Source: Wikipedia.org

ROBUS Football Club’s senior team are pictured below in their new kit before their opening match of the 2021-22 season at home to Mount Ambrose. The match ended 4-4, with Probus fighting back from being 3-0 down. Due to a lack of players the club will only run one team this season playing in The Trelawney League Division 3. Manager Graham Smith said ' Following a couple of years really struggling to field two teams we took the difficult decision to go down to one team a few months ago. The squad is very young and after an excellent preseason we are looking forward to the season ahead and hoping to build our way back up the league over the next few years. I would like to thank everyone who sponsored the club enabling us to buy much needed new kit and also training equipment. Anyone interested in sponsoring, please feel free to contact me on 07968478970.' Images: Top - Andy Sheer tackling, watched on by George Truscott and middle - Ethan Gatley.

I remember when...

T

HIS is the 21st and last article taken from the Probus Old Cornwall Society handbook published in 1982. Mr Harry Watts December 31st, 1894 was when I was born. When I was still a boy at School, I used to get up at six to drive cows belonging to Mr Joseph Jury. The old man was blind, and he used to milk when I’d tied them up. After school it was the same. I had a shilling a week for that. When I left school at 13 ½, I got six shillings a week. I was driving a pony and trap to Truro, winter and summer, to fetch coke from the gasworks for the bakehouse and the heating apparatus in church. At 14 I could milk seven cows an hour. Then I used to go to Morgan’s quarry to get stones for the roads and take them to the various depots for the stonebreakers. I’ve got the hammers now. I made the road in from the gate at Trewithen - piece work it was at three and eightpence a yard. More than fifty years ago, that was, and a cubic yard was a lot of stone - it was a ton. I sheared sheep at Tregoose at 2d a fleece - with the hand clippers, about three an hour and I made faggots and got enough money to pay my passage to Canada. But I came back! I made thatching pins for the wheaten straw thatching that my uncle William Allen did. He thatched for Trewithen. My father worked there for 50 years. I’ve been there 57 ½, my brother was there 36 and my wife was head parlourmaid, so between us, our family has done 200 years for Trewithen! I believe in walk and I do wear my spats to keep the brambles from spoiling my clothes.

I was sexton at church and father before me, between us we buried over 1400 people. My sister Kate was gone 90 when she died. Grandfather dug the mill leat to Geen and I’ve had a good life ups and downs of course, but my family have been in Probus for hundreds of years - it’s a good place.

Probus Environment Action Team (PEAT)

I

N 2020, following a presentation by a company called the Bee-Eco group, the Parish Council invited them to sow wildflower areas within the grassed areas in the village. Unfortunately, this work could not be started due to the pandemic, and the company went out of business. In March this year, the Parish Council contracted another company to do the work.

and unwanted weeds this autumn and preparing the ground for reseeding next year. Many of the team are allotment holders or keen gardeners and have the tools for the job. As a bonus, our County Councillor, Karen Glasson, is very supportive of this initiative and will be providing some flower seeds for us ready for sowing in spring. Hopefully, the weather will be kinder in the early part of 2022, and the flower beds will be glorious and buzzing with insects this time. That way, those residents in category 1 will notice them, and those in category 2 will hopefully change their minds.

The results have been mixed. I asked many residents what they thought about the condition of the wildflower areas, and the responses fell into three main categories.

If you would like to join the PEAT team in this and other activities, please join our Facebook page, Probus EAT, or email me at stevedealton166@btinternet.com or call or text me on 07813 995206.

1. ‘I haven't noticed them’. This is understandable, as unless you walk around Probus, you may not come across them. Many people lead busy lives and use their cars a lot and so won't see them.

Steve Dalton

2. ‘They're a mess. I don't like them’. I think this is a fair comment, certainly for some of the flower beds. It is a fact that the delayed start, late frost and a very dry May meant the conditions for germination were not good, and the results have been patchy at best. 3. ‘They're not very good, but it was a good idea’. I'm in this category. It could have been better. The results have been disappointing, and some beds, like the one on Fore Street opposite Treviglas Lane, look like they've had no seeds on them at all. But there's always next year. This presents an opportunity for the Probus Environment Action Team (PEAT) to help address the situation by removing grass 40 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 260

Probus Book Club By Liz Horder

HIS month, we read The Gathering by Anne Enright, selected by the library.

It is about an Irish family, the Hegartys, who gather at a brothers funeral. The main character, Veronica, travels to England to arrange that the body is taken home to Ireland.

to his drinking and subsequent death. We agreed that it is a rather bleak and loveless tale, the writing seemed disjointed, and no one enjoyed the book. Three other books that members have enjoyed and recommend are My Beloved Country by Alan Paton, The Lives of the Mitford Sisters by Laura Thompson and The Diary of a Provincial Lady by E.M Delafield. Other authors mentioned were J.B. Thompson, Joanna Trollop and Erica James. Editor’s note: One of book club’s recommendations from last month was Hold Still, a book of sad, funny and moving photographs taken by members of the public during the pandemic. Unfortunately, the book jacket image I found and included to go along with it, was wrong. It had the same title, but was actually a completely different book! I’m happy to set the record straight, and the correct book jacket is below.

There are references throughout the book that her brother may have been sexually abused as a young boy, which his sister thinks may have contributed September 2021 | 43
