DR. and MRS. LYLE H. FARRELL The publication of the Green Lantern has presented difficulties we could not or did not anticipate for several successive years, and the 1968 version is no exception. However, with the prompt and vigorous action of Mr. Ernest Sherman, an efficient editorial board, and the excellent photography of Mr. Robert St. Louis, the yearbook is here. W e are justifiably proud of the senior class whose faces and records dominate the pages following. Their scholastic achievements, their college placement, their unbelievable record of victories in athletics, m a k e this class one of the most outstanding a m o n g the 116 which have graduated from Proctor. Moreover, their strong leadership has developed among the undergraduates, scholars, student officers, and athletes w h o will challenge the fine record made by the class of 1968. Mrs. Farrell and I wish the class all the best of success in college and thereafter. Lyle H. Farrell Headmaster

The 1967 Varsity Football team had a very successful season, but it was not just another good one. Mr. Fowler, Mr. Wright, and Mr. Morinelli led the team to one of the most noteworthy seasons to date. It began on a sour note with a defeat by the m a m m o t h forces of North Yarmouth, but picked up with a 6-0 win over Andover the next week. After another hard series of practices the team made the long treck to Berwick, only to take a 20-0 loss. The team was d o w n but not out. The thought of the Westmount "vacation" the next week lifted all spirits, and the Big Green took Montreal by storm, 13-6. A n overwhelming 26-0 defeat of Exeter the next Saturday left the boys ready and waiting for the last two big ones. A n excellent Brewster team (at the time #1 in the league) came down only to suffer at the hands of an even better foe, 20-14. This was the first time in 22 years that Proctor had beaten Brewster! The season reached its finale on November 11, when the Blue of Holderness came to campus to meet the Green. The season ended in a blaze of glory when it was decided that the trophy was to stay at Proctor due to a win of 18-14. The frosting to the cake was added when it was announced that Proctor had taken the Lakes Region Championship.

Once again, the J.V. Football T e a m had another undefeated season. Although the team sorely missed some of the stars of last year's undefeated squad, some new members of the improving eleven did an excellent job. The new boys, combined with the experience of last year's Reserve and J.V. teams established another squad of winners. Both captains, S a m Rulon-Miller and Jon Randall, were starters on last year's Reserve team and both worked the team with little mercy, fully realizing that Proctor's undefeated J.V. team was the one to beat. It looked like a tough year for us, but with coaches like Mr. Chris Norris and Mr. Robert Wilson we had the chance to equal last year's team. W e all proved to Mr. Wilson that "the J.V.'s take the back seat to no one."

This year's Reserve Football team was led by coaches Tim Norris and Richard Bellefeuille. Their job of training boys w h o were mostly unfamiliar to the game of football was a most difficult one. Not only did they have to overcome the team's inexperience, but they were forced to remove a mental block set up by the boys due to the loss of their first three games. Mr. Bellefeuille coached the line and the defense, while Mr. T. Norris worked with the backfield. The team's first win over Tilton School was of great value to morale, as was the sound victory against N e w Hampton where the Reserves pulled through with a 22-14 win in a hard hitting game. The leading backs were Wes Pegler, Eric Nord and Bill Finley. In the Tilton game, and at N e w Hampton, the team was forced to the air because of various backfield injuries. Dick Griffin caught several long passes from T o m Hall, making a good deal of yardage and eventually scored. The defensive squad maintained a good record of fourteen points being scored against it in the two winning games by the support of strong safties Nord and Rue with the help of linebackers Duncan, Marks and Pegler. Despite various obstacles, the Reserves were able to win the coveted title of the Lakes Region Champs which had large sentimental value for all. 50

The cross-country season this past fall was equal to our past two seasons with one loss, nine wins, and a second in the Lakes Region Championships. Our only loss was to Holderness early in the season when the team wasn't in top shape. As the season progressed and the team started getting stronger, our narrow wins became wider and wider victories. After our loss to Holderness, we trained harder and spent more time on the course looking toward that final big meet with our rivals. W h e n it came we were ready and everyone on both sides ran hard. After the race it looked pretty grim for Proctor, but to our surprise the last counting m a n for Holderness came in 14th and we w o n the race by three points. With the depth we had on the team this year, the future looks bright for Proctor cross-country runners, and maybe next year the team can pull an upset on Tilton and be the Lakes Region Champions.

The 1967-68 Varsity Hockey team could probably be called one of the best in a long time. Compiling an overall record of 1 1 - 3 - 1 and league record of 9 - 0, Proctor was the undisputed champion of the Lakes Region. The team opened up with a pre-Christmas loss against Hanover High School, but the game proved to be very beneficial in ironing out the major problems. After Christmas vacation, the team looked ready to play and w o n the next seven games. A tie with Concord slowed the team up temporarily but then they came back to win the next three games. W e then played Concord again at the Everett Arena, but only to lose 2-1. Lady luck was still against us as we dropped our second game to our Canadian rivals, Westmount, 12-7. Proctor bounced back to defeat Berwick 10-0 in our last game. The climax of the season came at the end when Proctor (definite underdogs) defeated the overconfident Lakes Region All Stars, 4-3. Special recognition should be given to goalie Dave Babbitt, w h o had four shut outs, and only allowed 32 goals as opposed to 79 scored against our opponents. The team was also led by Jim Sherman and the Jones Trophy winner, Captain John Gary. And, of course, managers Joe Carr and Court Taplin. 55

Contrary to rumor, the J.V. Hockey team did play again this year. In fact, they even w o n a few rather "exciting" games. The team, as usual, did have it's weak points in respect to their record of wins and losses. However, the team learned a great deal and found that hockey was more than showing off before the game. The members of the J.V. team learned that it is hard work to build a good team, and more importantly to have strong spirit. It seemed that there were times when the whole team fell apart and everyone asked, "was it really worth it?". Usually the answer was yes, even if at times it was doubtful. Not being able to catch one's breath, having frostbitten fingers, and shoveling a never ending pile of snow; these were all part of the game, and all part of the spirit that kept the team going. The feeling that "I have worked for what I got" and the knowledge that when you didn't work the game was lost gave the team real drive. A great m a n y things were learned during this years season, the skill and new knowledge will not be forgotten. They will be the basic framework under which m a n y of these players will continue in their endeavors both in sports and in other walks of life. For this help w e would like to thank Mr. C. Norris.

2-1 loss record. Star left wing Chris Olson put the only one in for the Reserves. Even though the record was only 1-2, the Reserves did well against experienced skaters and hockey players. M u c h appreciation must be given to Taft Chase, the other Co-Captain, w h o worked hard alongside Mr. Bellefeuille. H o w d y R u e also did a fine job as the Reserves manager.
Every day at two o'clock, at the end of the hockey rink; you know, where the boards aren't, stands a group of rugged individuals. They have to be rugged, they spend half of their time lying on the ice and the other half getting there. This group is the Reserve Hockey team and what is unique about this group is that their fearless leader, Mr. Bellefeuille, is learning the art of standing up on those two skates along with the team members. It is sort of a self-help program where everyone encourages the others. After all the beginning formalities, the team did settle d o w n and play a few games; and a few it was, most of the others were rained out. The first game was with La Salette and the Reserves were victorious by a score of 2-1. The goals were by T o m Rudkin and Wes Pegler. In the second game, w e were not so fortunate; La Salette beat us 4-2 with goals by George Berry and Co-Captain Peter Davis. With the loss of all but three Varsity Ski Team members, the season looked pretty grim last fall. Our entire alpine team had graduated the previous year and the winter looked like strictly a building season. However, to the surprise of everyone, it looked like the new freshman and sophomore talent could already ski and that Proctor, for once, would not have to teach them the basics of the snowplow turn. With this great added advantage, a young but enthusiastic team managed to end up third in the Lakes Region and twelfth in the Eastern Prep School Championships; the same as last year. Taking a projected look at the future, I would say that the chances for m u c h greater success are very good. With a year of competition behind them, the underclassmen should give the teams in the Lakes Region a run for their money.

Despite what might be termed as a losing season, the J.V. Ski team showed great prospects for next year with a majority of the members being from the freshman and sophomore classes. The captain, R o n McClintic could always be depended upon to turn out a performance from which his teammates could acquire the inspiration that the team needed. Another contribution to the team was a switch-over from ski school to the ski team which occurred in the middle of the season. F r o m this switch came Bob McClintic and three sophomores: T o m M c K a y , Neill Trimble and Dick Griffin. O f course, the coaching of the team, received from Mr. Spencer Jackson, was greatly appreciated. Mr. Jackson, in addition to coaching, through his skill in carpentry, erected a 15 meter ski jump on the sight of the old out-dated 20 meter jump. This offered a valuable opportunity for the skiers to experience ski jumping for their first time. With the experience that we received this year, we should have a team-in-the-running next year.

W e then went on to win the remaining four games. With an 8-2 record, we scored more than ninety goals to our opponents thirty. In the Lawrence game, Jerry Shennan made two of the three goals, making it a win for Proctor 3-2. The next game was with Holderness where three goals were scored making it a close 3-2 victory for Proctor. The next four games were lost, but this did not hurt the morale of the team because they came back to win the next three games. The games that were w o n were played against Tilton, Cardigan Mountain and N e w Hampton. The Tilton game was the game that gave the team their confidence, winning it 11-1. The big game was with Cardigan which had defeated Proctor 5-0 previously. The game turned out to be a big victory for Proctor, winning it 7-1 with goals scored by Peter Rolfe and K i m Noble. The N e w Hampton game was w o n 11-3 with the help of Chris Smith and Augie Jandorek. This last game brought the Lakes Region trophy for J.V. Lacrosse to Proctor's Junior Varsity team. 63

Proctor Lacrosse scored another first this year when the first Reserve Lacrosse Team was initiated. Coached by ex-lacrosse players Jon Randall and Peter Davis, and led by Co-Captains Dave Smith and Sandy Marsters, the team managed to bring off a winning season. The first game against Holderness was close and played hard, but the Reserves managed to take them 2-1. The second game was not quite as good, as K U A came to Proctor and drove the Reserves into the ground in an 8-0 loss. The Reserves fought back at the next game and, bearing in mind what J.V. Coach Norris said, w e beat Cardigan 5-3. Next the team took off for K U A and, recalling the wrath w e had for them, we shortened the gap, but were still defeated 3-1. The final game was Cardigan at home, and knowing we would have a practice the next day had we lost, Proctor outplayed them 2-0, thus wrapping up a winning season with an almost commendable 3-2 record.

The 1968 Varsity Baseball Team, with a 5-5 win-loss record, was the best team in sixteen years even though it was plagued by erratic fielding, skimpy hitting and some very untimely injuries throughout the season. The team, as individuals, was one of the most solid in the league, almost knocking off some of the more established teams. The high point of the season came against Brewster. After making 6 errors in the previous game, the team settled d o w n behind the no hit pitching of Dick Wallace and gave him an almost perfect game; not allowing anyone of the first 20 batters to reach base. The 21st batter, the potential last out, walked, Dick lost his perfect game. The next batter grounded out, giving Dick and the entire team one of the most exciting moments in baseball. The 1968 Varsity Baseball T e a m was a good one and shall be remembered at Proctor not only as the best but as one of the most colorful.

The Varsity Tennis team had it's first losing season in many years. But, it was one in which the members of the team had a very enjoyable time. Mr. Burke had a very frustrating season, but I think the team learned a lot from him and he learned a lot from the team. The team record was 5-7 because Proctor came across some very experienced players. W e had lost the first six players from the old team with only two lettermen returning and these had played numbers seven and eight. The jump from number seven m a n to number one is a good deal to ask of anyone. A new comer joined the varsity squad this year and added a great deal to the team. Chris Olson, only a sophomore, should be a strong competitor so he will be the guy at the top for the next few years. Fritz Porter played the number three position, and played well. Dick Cutler handled the fourth position with ease. His game improved greatly and Mr. Burke stated that if there was a prize for the most improved player, Dick would have w o n it. Chris White played the number five position and had a very inconsistent season. Number six on the team was Jim Infanti. He probably threatened to quit tennis more than
any other player, yet he had the best record of anyone. The team owed a lot to the coach, Mr. Burke. He had something that everyone on the team lacked, and that was patience. He did everything in his power to shape the team into a strong one. He has more to work with next season and with his coaching and Chris White as captain, I a m sure it will be successful.

This year's Varsity and J.V. Sailing teams had an excellent season with a varsity record of 3 wins, one loss and a J.V. record of 1 win and 1 loss. The team started their practice racing on Highland Lake the day the ice went out, and Bill Davis started off quite early trying to break the record for the number of capsizings. After a week of sailing, Tate, Materne, Davis and Hart became the Varsity and McLean, Seaver, Brengle, Cote and Gibney became the J.V.'s. While the weather hovered in the thirties, the Varsity traveled to their first meet and their only defeat against Tabor. Losing by 2-0, they resolved to come back on Parents' Weekend when they handed Dublin a 3-1 defeat. Then the Varsity took on Cardigan Mt. and handed them a 2-0 defeat. The final meet of the year for the Varsity was a 2-0 defeat for Andover. While the Varsity was coming through their season the J.V.'s split theirs with a win over Cardigan Mt. and a defeat to Williston. The weekend before exams was the scene of the M.I.T. Regatta on the Charles in which a D S Q all but ruined Proctor's hopes for the M.I.T. bowl. But under the able guidance of Mr. Knox, the team worked hard and had a lot of fun. The racing d o w n on Highland Lake was characterized by a lot of spirit and a lot of good sailing, which proved to be a winning combination.

This year's Varsity Golf team had only two returning lettermen which made it difficult to build a strong team. With the able coaching of Mr. John Maguire and Mr. Claude Liman we were able to learn a great deal. This season should be considered as a good building year for next year's team which will be comprised of three returning lettermen: Steve Jones, Bill Finley and Taft Chase. Unfortunately, w e will be losing three competent seniors: Park Smith, Mark Holmes and Captain Courtenay Taplin. They have each been an asset to the team and will be missed. The basic advantage we had this year was our chance to get out on the course two weeks earlier than any other year. This made it possible for us to play at least nine holes almost every afternoon. Again, we would like to thank Coach Maguire and Mr. Lim a n for all of their instruction and assistance.
