1 he education I propose includes all that is proper for a man. and is one in which all m e n w h o are born into this world should share ... Ourfirstwish is that all m e n should be educated fully to full humanity; not only one individual, nor a few, nor even many, but all m e n together and single, young and old, rich and poor, of high and lowly birth, m e n and w o m e n — in a word, all whose fate it is to be born h u m a n beings; so that at last the whole of the h u m a n race m a y become educated, m e n of all ages, all conditions, both sexes and all nations. Our second wish is that every m a n should be wholly educated, rightly formed not only in one single matter or in a few or even in many, but in all things which perfect h u m a n nature . .. — John A m o s Comenius The Great Didactic, 1632

Behind these time-honored Proctor walls lies a noble spirit of liberal, humanizing Education.

Proctor Life and Spirit Centers on Creating, Developing, and Maintaining an Atmosphere of Mutual Trust, Respect, and Concern in the areas of ... INTELLECTUAL MATURITY Proctor recognizes its role as a college preparatory school and maintains it primarv objective of "helping each student to qualify for the best possible college according to his potential." It offers a basic college preparatory curriculum, remedial work — tutoring, conferences, courses, and a variety of electives. H o w ever in a spirit of mutual cooperation and respect, students m a y involve themselves in "course directions, development of esthetic values in art and music, and development of manual skills in wood and metal shop." Opportunities for independent study are also strongly encouraged in various and sundry areas. As Alfred Whitehead has succinctly stated m a n y times, "There is only one subject matter for education, and that is Life in all its manifestations", and Socrates also. "For our conversation is not about something casual, but about the proper w a y to live." Thus, w e at Proctor "accept the responsibility for helping each other to realize other broader areas of potential, such as .. .

5

SOCIAL MATURITY: Education should prepare people not just to earn a living but to live a life — a creative, humane, and sensitive life . .. True education should lead a student to a point beyond which he can educate himself. This point is reached when the person has both the desire and the capacity to learn for himself, to dig out what he needs to know, as well as the capacity to judge what is worth learning. Social maturity at Proctor becomes an integral part of this liberalizing education. Through student government, the job system, the honor system, room study, strong dorm life, involvement in the Wilderness Experience Program and involvement in decision making process at all levels, the Proctorite humanizes and deepens his m a n y faceted personality and his appreciation of his o w n worth as an individual among individuals.

PHYSICAL M A T U R I T Y The presence of a humanizing, liberal spirit of education can best be seen in the work that we do rather than the sounds that we make. In a spirit of cooperation and togetherness, we at Proctor uncover our hidden talents, whether working out on the athleticfields,or on the Wilderness Experience, skiing on snow-capped mountain tops, kayaking deep in a hidden forest, or creating our own individual sport projects. While working in a group, we are finding ourselves and our potential, and opening new channels of experience for enriching our daily lives. In the words of our Proctor Philosophy, we are "maximizing the possibility of personal growth for all members of our community."

Proctor teachers create a humanized education with a firm sense of direction and commitment to the preservation of h u m a n values. Proctor boasts of its Parents, Board of Trustees, and Generous Benefactors.

LO

The great m e n of culture are those w h o have a passion for diffusing, for making prevail, for carrying from one end of society to the other, the best knowledge, the best ideas of their time; w h o have laboured to divest knowledge of all that was harsh, uncouth, difficult, abstract, professional, exclusive; to humanize it, to m a k e it efficient outside the clique of the cultivated and learned, yet still remaining, the best knowledge and thought of the time, and a true source, therefore of sweetness and light. Matthew Arnold Culture and Anarchy 1899

12

Proctor boasts of its Parents, Board of Trustees, and Generous Benefactors. Proctor's proudest boast is its Parents, Board of Trustees, and generous Benefactors. Their loyal and generous cooperation continues to provide Proctor with top quality facilities and education. Extensive library renovation, a new regulation size hockey rink, substantial funding for scholarship programming, new faculty apartments, widespread new equipment for classrooms, are just a few of the results of their long and arduous efforts. They meet periodically during the school year, dance, make pledges and donations to the school, laugh, attend plays, cheer at football games, complain, give up their precious time for Proctor functions, check on the progress of their sons and daughters, plan parties, m a k e friends, and in a word, work themselves to death for anything that will help Proctor. O n e couldn't ask for more, perseveringly loyal and generous groups for our ongoing Community. W e honour them as our most loyal followers.

Editor's Note: I a m not going to say too m u c h except to express m y deepest thanks to all w h o helped m e complete this difficult task. Also I a m sure that I a m speaking for everyone at Proctor when I send thanks to those w h o contributed and gave their support. With limited organization, I a m happy to think that w e have turned out a good representation of the 1973 year at Proctor. In the future, I hope things will be more organized and the staff can produce the book that w e all strive to produce every year. G o o d Luck to all those next year. Debbie Drake, Editor '73
