O n e of the worst natural disasters occur in recent history swept over t Northeastern states on January 5,19? A five-day storm of rain and ice bro branches and toppled entire tree downing power and telephone lin along with them. Emergency shelte opened to alleviate the plight of re; dents. S o m e areas were without p o w for only a few days but others were n as fortunate. The widespread path < devastation and destruction meant th, utility companies had to call for hel from companies farther south. Despii the tireless efforts by power crew m a n y areas were without power fc two weeks; parts of eastern Canad were crippled for a month. It w a s a time of community — coming together to help each othe endure and even overcome the grea Ice Storm of '98.

From Around New England Scenes from other N e w England states show that this storm had a widespread effect on hundreds of thousands of people. The broken trees will be a constant reminder of this destructive storm for years to come. Especially hard-hit were the maple syrup farmers whose livelihood depends on the maple trees. With this years' crop essentially ruined, fears about future production haunt the farmers' thoughts.

Northern N e w York Devastate Upstate N e w York Held Hostage The devastation from this storm was unimaginable in upstate N e w York. For five days the mercury hovered just above the freezing mark and the sleet and rain continued to fall until the ice build-up reached incredible proportions. The ice brought everything to a halt. Stud ents, out on Christmas break, never thought that the break would last until January 20. Folks worked together to help those around them. People arrived from all parts of the country to donate food, blankets, generators and their time.
