two friends create eclipse magic SKYE, SOCTLAND: World renowned trials rider Danny MacAskill returned to his home island of Skye in Scotland to take in the magic of a solar eclipse and create one of the most memorable photos of the year. The photograph, which sees Danny appear in mid-air in front of the eclipse, was created by friend and photographer, Rutger Pauw. Mt Buller set for a bumper season MT BULLER, AUSTRALIA: Mt Buller has already welcomed the first snowfalls for the year ahead of the 2015 snow season, which kicks off on June 6. It’s shaping up to be another exciting season following 2014’s record snowfalls and visitor numbers. Last year Mt Buller welcomed more than 314,000 visitors, continuing Mt Buller’s lead as Victoria’s most popular Alpine resort. Plenty of hard work has been taking place behind the scenes, with a range of important upgrades implemented both on the slopes and in the Village. Mt Buller’s world-class snowmaking system has received a $500,000 boost, with the purchase of a new submersible pump, which will increase snowmaking capacity by 30 per cent and allow the resort to pump 800 litres of snow per second during peak periods. Eight additional snowmaking guns will be installed on the southern side of Bourke Street. The existing guns will be relocated to the south side of Baldy – significantly increasing the reliability of this terrain. The much-loved Tirol T-Bar has received a major upgrade, with the existing diesel motor replaced by an electric version. Not only will this improve the reliability of this lift, which has been operating since 1972, but further underpins the resort’s commitment to implementing environmentally friendly solutions on the mountain.

In the Village, visitors will have a brand new dining facility to visit, with the addition of a brand new Asian food court. Located within the Mt Buller Chalet Hotel and operated by Extragreen Travel, one of Mt Buller’s most popular day tour operators, this new food court will offer Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian and Vietnamese food served in an open easy style for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Visitors can also enjoy an activity often reserved for those lucky enough to visit the northern hemisphere – sled dog tours. Commencing mid-way through the 2014 snow season, the team from Australian Sled Dog Tours will return to Mt Buller with their large team of Siberian Huskies to offer a range of new tours and experiences for visitors, from a meet and greet with the dogs to an extended half-day tour. Mt Stirling (a short car ride or stunning snowshoe walk from Mt Buller); offers visitors an authentic Alpine adventure, with backcountry skiing and snowboarding, cross-country ski trails, snow camping, interpretive snowshoe walks and more.

Several improvements have been made to the Mt Stirling resort, with the visitor centre receiving a significant refurbishment, and a brand new café has commenced operation offering wholesome organic food. Marketing and communications manager for Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, Gillian Dobson, said the resort is ready for another huge snow season. “We can’t wait to officially open the season on June 6, and are hoping the snow gods provide us with plenty of reasons to celebrate. This year the resort has even more to offer our guests after a busy summer of improvements, and we’re excited to welcome everyone to enjoy Opening Weekend with us for a taster of what’s to come in 2015.” Mt Buller’s opening weekend will go off with a bang on the Queen’s birthday long weekend, June 6-8, with free entertainment, live music and activities on offer and a number of special events across the weekend. For further information, as well as accommodation bookings, visit www.mtbuller.com.au.

sun sets on future music festival MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: Mushroom Group has announced a decision to discontinue Future Music Festival. Despite the considerable critical acclaim of the 2015 festival, the last two years of ticket sales for the festival have underperformed, meaning Future Music Festival will not be returning in 2016. Mushroom Group share the belief expressed by a number of promoters globally that the day of the large scale travelling festival in its current form is unfortunately numbered. The company will continue its focus on touring through its highly successful companies Frontier Touring, A Day On The Green and boutique music festival Sugar Mountain and the world’s largest under 18 music event Good Life. The Group are developing a new festival concept, which is planned for the same time period previously held by Future Music Festival. “The decision to discontinue Future Music Festival was not made lightly. A point came though where it simply no longer made sense to continue,” said Mushroom group chairman, Michael Gudinski. “We believe in the festival industry in Australia and plan to announce an exciting new festival concept in the coming months.”

The Very Best releases new album SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: : The Very Best have released their most ambitious and richly textured album to date, Makes A King, on Moshi Moshi Records. It’s been a long, strange trip for Johan Hugo and Esau Mwamwaya, the Swedish-Malawian duo behind The Very Best’s exuberant global pop. This particular journey began in October 2013, following a performance at Malawi’s Lake of Stars festival when Johan stayed on in the capital, Lilongwe, to record some demos. Initial sessions were promising, but to really move ahead Johan felt they needed a change of scene. The duo found a house about five hours drive from the capital in a village called M’dala Chikowa. Hearing that they were in town, local choirs and musicians would often turn up and perform for them, intrusions welcomed by the band who were keen to incorporate a new variety of acoustic and live instruments into their sound. As well as the sounds of the lake, Johan and Esau again drew on a wide circle of contributors and guest artists. Local Malawian band Jerere can be heard sharing a joke with Esau on the infectious ‘Bilimankhwe’ while anthemic single Hear Me is anchored by bass from Vampire Weekend’s Chris Baio and Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal adds his trademark vocal power to Umasiye. Yet whether tapping into a vibrant house groove (Sweka) or

summoning lilting pop harmonies (Mwana Wanga), Makes A King remains a southern African album at its heart, with Esau not afraid to reference Malawi’s recent issues with endemic poverty and political corruption. An interview with The very Best Johan Hugo will appear in the next edition of Prodijee.

indy adds hi-def video display boards INDIANAPOLIS, USA: Indianapolis Motor Speedway fans will now be able to experience the high-intensity, heart-pounding excitement of events up close and personal, courtesy of 20 newly installed networked highdefinition (HD) LED video display boards from Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Company. For thousands watching from the stands and infield of the legendary racetrack, the high-end digital displays will deliver unparalleled clarity and resolution, bringing fans even closer to the action. “We are continuing to enhance the fan experience at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Panasonic is playing a key role,” said Indianapolis Motor Speedway president, J Douglas Boles. “We will deliver state-ofthe-art technology and a clear view of all the racing action. The imaging clarity and technology

powering the new video displays, in addition to enhanced content delivery, will allow our fans to truly feel the energy on the track.” To ensure that all spectators have a video screen to view at the massive racetrack, Panasonic is working with IMS to build a network of next generation video boards located throughout the infield and in front of the grandstands of the iconic 2.5-mile oval. Installation of the new HD displays will be completed prior to the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 9 and the 99th Indianapolis 500 on May 24, 2015. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the highest-capacity sports venue in the world. The digital display network provides clear sight lines from any viewing angle, with 98 per cent of all seat holders having a clear view of the new and vibrant content delivered on these displays.

Fans will immediately notice the new LED video boards are significantly larger, brighter, have more accurate colour imagery and are capable of broadcasting HD animation, graphics and video. In turns one and four and above Gasoline Alley, the displays are more than three and a half times the size of the previous boards, with the displays at turns one and four each exceeding 2,200 total square feet. The boards positioned above the Media Centre and at the south end of the Gasoline Alley Suites are more than four times larger, with each having a total display area greater than 600 square feet. As part of its multi-year agreement with IMS, Panasonic will serve as Official Partner of IMS, the Indianapolis 500, Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis and the Brickyard 400, as well as INDYCAR and the Verizon IndyCar Series.

change, escapism & transformation SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Hailing from the NSW south coast, Hein Cooper has been quietly impressing audiences across Australia with his live shows (including national tours with Half Moon Run and Thelma Plum) and has released his debut film clip for single The Art of Escape and self-titled EP. Produced by Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, The Local Natives) during a recent trip to Canada where he also showcased at Canadian Music Week in Montreal, the four-track EP covers an emotional soundscape with strong themes of change, escapism and transformation. “It is a call to all of the wonderful displaced beings I have found in my life, and more broadly everybody who feels alone in their own idealistic dreaming,” says Hein. The ethereal concept video breathes further life and depth into

an already accomplished debut. “I wanted to reflect a whole lot of different elements in my life through this clip,” said Hein. I wanted it to be more of a broad overview of love vs pain, nature vs city, fast vs slow, success vs failure… basically all of the different layers of existing,

and I wanted people to perceive me by these characteristics rather than by my actual physical appearance. So Ed Triglone (director/producer) and I decided it would be best to go out and shoot a load of footage with this in mind and embody this footage in my silhouette.” WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY’S ‘FRAME OF MIN MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: As part of its Australian premiere season, Sydney Dance Company is set to present a limited run of its acclaimed double bill, Frame of Mind, at Southbank Theatre, Melbourne. This is an exceptional opportunity to experience two mesmerising danceworks – legendary American choreographer William Forsythe’s acclaimed masterpiece Quintett, and Rafael Bonachela’s newly created Frame of Mind, direct from its World premiere Sydney performances. Created in 1993, William Forsythe’s Quintett is one of the most renowned contemporary dance works of the Twentieth Century. This highly poetic and powerful work, developed in collaboration with Ballet Frankfurt dancers, Dana Caspersen, Stephen Galloway, Jacopo Godani, Thomas McManus and Jone San Martin, was a final love letter to Forsythe’s wife, dancer Tracy-Kai Maier, who succumbed to cancer in 1994, aged 32. Quintett is set to a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack by renowned post-minimalist British composer, Gavin Bryars; his iconic 1975 composition, Jesus’s Blood Never Failed Me Yet. Inspired by a grainy, chance recording of a homeless man singing, the looped vocals begin as a barely audible, distant melody, and acquire a slowly evolving, growing orchestral accompaniment, which with its insistent optimism, tinged with tragedy, creeps under the skin and magnifies the intense poignancy of the choreography. One of Forsythe’s most closely guarded pieces, Quintett has rarely been performed outside of his direct supervision. In 22 years since its creation, only eight companies around the world have been permitted to present the piece and Sydney Dance Company is the first in the southern hemisphere to do so. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

In Frame of Mind, Rafael Bonachela brings the presence and power of 17 of Australia’s most accomplished dancers to the stage for an emotionally charged performance. In a faded room – created by designer Ralph Myers, time passes from day to night, and over again, as the dancers transition from impassioned solos to tender duets, intricate trios and high energy ensembles, or lounge silently, observing from the sidelines. Inspired by the desire to be in two places at once, Frame of Mind is performed to a pulsing contemporary-classical soundtrack by US composer, Bryce Dessner, best known as a member of hit rock band, The National. Recorded by internationally renowned The Kronos Quartet, the music – from Dessner’s acclaimed 2009 debut CD Aheym – travels the gamut of human emotion, from love to folly, compassion and fury. Frame of Mind opens at Southbank Theatre, Melbourne on May 6, with just nine performances until May 16 (Wednesday to Saturday, 8pm; Saturday May 16, 2pm).

THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL season has just begun and right from the very first week of competition I can’t help but think the way sport is umpired/refereed needs to change. It is said that umpiring decisions don’t affect the results but we all know that is untrue - particularly after the AFL introduced video reviews of questionable goals, lest a Grand Final be subjected to an unjust result. But is it time to have this game – and others – officiated by a field umpire watching a television screen rather than by ru nning the field? Television coverage provides vision from every angle, along with

instant replays, which highlights the many incorrect decisions dealt out during a game. Administrators are doing much to rid their sports of the artificial results that come from performance enhancing drugs and game fixing, yet they do not seem to have the same enthusiasm for ridding sport of artificial results that come from poor umpiring. Sure the intent is different, but the result is the same. Even if poor umpiring does not cost a team the win, it is likely to affect the winning margin. Given that most major sports gain income from gamblers who place bets based on winning margins, it is simply unacceptable to turn a blind eye to umpiring decisions that are demonstrably wrong. Broadcasters like a fast game and umpiring by television may slow the game down, but if that’s what it takes to ensure a fair and just competition, then so be it.

HYALURONIC ACID FOR REJUVENATION YOU HAVE PROBABLY been hearing of this ingredient for a while, but do you really know what Hyaluronic Acid is and what it does? HA (Hyaluronic Acid) is a substance that is naturally present in the human body and is found in the highest concentration in fluids in our eyes and joints. It is a gel-like water holding molecule that is the space filler and cushioning agent in our joints and nerves, it hydrates skin and hair and fills the eye. It was discovered that Japanese men and women in the ’80s and ’90s, who had smooth and wrinkle free skin, flexible joints and full heads of hair, had ‘defied their age’ due to oestrogen-like molecules in their diet from soya and tofu, which sent signals to the cells to make more HA. Also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate, the product is now widely available in capsules, skin creams and even injectables. It is often used for joint disorders and can be taken by mouth or injected into the affected joint by your

doctor. The FDA has approved the use of HA during some eye surgeries where it is injected into the eye during the procedure to help replace natural fluids and it is often used as a lip filler in plastic surgery as well as being applied topically for healing wounds, burns, skin ulcers and as a moisturiser. It is obvious that HA has multiple functions with studies showing that it improves skin hydration, stimulates production of collagen in the skin, works as an antioxidant and maintains skin elasticity. Almost half the body’s HA is located in the collagen of the skin and can retain more than 1000 times its weight in water within the cells of the skin making it an excellent moisturiser. It is said that no other biological substance can retain as much water as HA which results in smooth and soft skin with decreased wrinkles.

Many people consider hyaluronic acid to be more important than collagen with its most common application being for anti-ageing therapy and cosmetic procedures. With such high accolades, this substance is something that appears to extremely beneficial to our entire bodies, but importantly, our skin. Nivea’s Cellular Anti-Age Skin Rejuvenation range combines a skin-compatible combination of ingredients to help skin cells behave like they are young again – Magnolia extract to increase the skin cells’ resilience to oxidative stress, Creatine which increases skin cells’ energy and Hyaluronic Acid. Ensuring your anti-ageing needs are met morning and night, the Nivea Cellular Anti-Age range includes: Day Cream with SPF15 – RRP AU$27.99. a revolution in umbrella design BLUNT IS SAID to make the world’s strongest umbrellas and lays claim to creating the only umbrellas on the market with fully tensioned canopies. Design critics have bestowed Blunt with such accolades as a ‘revolution in umbrella design’, a ‘structure that falls between a suspension bridge and a NASA space probe’ and an ‘umbrella with architectural integrity’. The company has won many prestigious awards and its product will have its user covered, whatever the weather and whatever his or her style. Now, this innovative company is excited to announce the addition of the world’s first smart – and arguably ‘unloseable’ - umbrella to its revolutionary product portfolio. The talented team at New Zealand’s Blunt Umbrellas teamed up with Silicon Valley’s latest sensation ‘Tile’ to create the Blunt + Tile umbrella – an umbrella that can be tracked when misplaced. Unsurprisingly, umbrellas are among the top five most commonly misplaced possessions. Each Blunt + Tile umbrella contains a ‘Tile’ in a specially designed lining pocket, which can then be tracked using the Tile App for iPhone and Android. If misplaced within a 15 to 30 metre range, Blunt + Tile Umbrella owners can ask their Tile App to find their umbrella. It will then emit a chip tune melody until the

owner confirms that it has been located, it can also determine their umbrella’s ‘last seen’ location. Although Blunt’s newest release solves a universal problem, only a handful of lucky Australians will be able to get their hands on one. Originally destined for the US only, Blunt has managed to secure a number of Blunt + Tile umbrellas for the Australian market. www.bluntumbrellas.com.au

Good oral health = beautiful smile IT’S VITAL TO BUILD AN ORAL HEALTH CARE PLAN INTO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE TO ENSURE YOUR MOUTH AND TEETH STAY HEALTHY FOR YEARS TO COME SAYS DR REMO FANELLI.

THERE’S MORE TO oral health care than a beautiful smile and keeping your teeth and mouth healthy requires more than just daily brushing. Often the condition of the mouth mirrors the overall condition of the body and poor oral health can have a significant negative impact on quality of life. “Good oral health care is often just about creating good habits and sticking to them,” explained Dr Remo Fanelli of Fanelli Dental. “Knowing what products are available and finding the ones that work best for you is often half the battle. It’s vital to build an oral health care plan into your daily routine to ensure your mouth and teeth stay healthy for years to come.” Here, Dr Fanelli and oral care expert, CareDent, provide some simple tips that should be part of everyone’s oral health plan no matter what age. 1. Choose the right toothbrush and replace it regularly A soft-bristled brush that fits your mouth comfortably is recommended. Bristles should be sturdy enough to remove plaque but not hard enough to cause damage. Dentists advise replacing your toothbrush every three months or sooner. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

2. Regular flossing Floss daily to remove plaque from areas of your mouth toothbrushes can’t reach. Find the method that works best for you whether it’s regular dental floss or an interdental brush and build it into your daily routine. 3. Brush regularly Brush at least twice a day for at least two minutes each time and be thorough. Brush on all sides of the teeth and move the bristles below the gum line which is an area that is often neglected.

4. Work on technique Use a thorough effective technique when brushing. Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle and aim below the gum line. Use a slow circular motion and remember to brush the outside, inside and chewing surfaces of the teeth for best results. 5. Regular dental check-up Seeing a dentist regularly helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. 6. Watch your diet Eat a healthy diet to provide the necessary nutrients (vitamins A and C, in particular) to prevent gum disease.

roadtest PAULA’S CHOICE BROWDEFINING CREAM DUO THE PERFECT BROW not only defines your eyes, but frames your entire face. I am a blonde with extremely blonde, practically invisible, eyebrows. There is a positive side of having almost invisible eyebrows, I don’t have to pluck, but there is also a down side of it, the constant need to colour them in one way or another to put that frame on my face. My brows have been died, tinted and pencilled, it is a tiresome process that often results in me looking like I have black caterpillars over my eyes, but I have stopped short of having them tattooed for permanent colour – fear of the final result is what I would call it. Paula’s Choice Brow-Defining Cream Duo – is a little kit with longlasting cream brow colours that give blonde-to-dark-brown brows a full, natural look with minimal effort. The little compact gives you two brow colours (taupe and dark brown) with a double-ended brush. You can use the shades together or singularly to build colour. This is absolutely perfect for blondes who want lighter coloured brows for a more natural look during the day but may want to darken them up for evening. This is an extremely easy product to use and gives you colour to the level you want, from very fair to quite dark. It doesn’t smear, smudge or flake and is great for defining or filling in sparse brows if you wish to

ONE POT WONDER Have you ever wished you could use one product to do just about everything? I must admit, I hadn’t heard of this product before, but Trilogy Everything Balm is high on many people’s lists as the answer to the above question, often referred to as the ultimate multi-tasker. This year has brought about a few changes to the Trilogy Everything Balm with it now being repackaged into a bright beautiful new tin and reformulated with additional highperformance botanicals renowned for their antiseptic and healing qualities. As well as doing the job of a lip balm, heel balm, hand cream, melting massage oil, nappy cream and all-over face and body moisturiser, Trilogy Everything Balm can now be used as a soothing salve

to aid healing of chapped, grazed skin, itchy bites and minor hurts of all sorts. New natural actives such as Pawpaw Extract, Echinacea and Coconut Oil supplement the already intensive nourishing and hydrating properties of pure plant oils from marula, jojoba, olive, avocado, certified organic rosehip and Manuka honey. This lightweight, non-sticky and delicately scented balm is just perfect to take on your travels. It is also great, at just 45ml, to throw into your bag for everyday use and with a screw on lid, you won’t have to worry about the contents leaking out. So far I have found it a fantastic product for healing chapped lips and for giving patches of dry skin extra moisture. It is great on your cuticles and surprisingly, it is also really good to tame fly away hair. The balm is also good as a melting massage oil, but you do need to use quite a bit of the product for this purpose. I found the product very soothing on a mosquito bite with the itch disappearing immediately. For me, Trilogy Everything Balm really is a ‘go to’ product and I am looking forward to finding more ways to use it while I carry it around with me in my bag on a daily basis. Available at Priceline, Myer, pharmacies and health stores. RRP AU$18.95 www.trilogyproducts.com

BETTER BUMP BARS I SHOULD PROBABLY begin this review by stating very clearly that I am not, in fact, pregnant. Friends, family, mother and father, you may breathe a sigh of relief. BetterBump bars are specifically designed to provide the proper nutrients needed during any stage of a woman’s pregnancy and even after. However, despite these bars being an extremely healthy option, they are also extremely tasty—so let me just say that you most certainly do not have to be pregnant to enjoy healthy alternatives. It is a win-win situation. The BetterBump bars come in three delicious flavours (RRP AU$3.50 each); Cranberry Hazelnut with Dark Chocolate, Apricot and Almond with Dark Chocolate and Oat Berry with Dark Chocolate. These bars contain key ingredients, such as Galactagogues, pre-biotic, fibre, omega-3 and carbohydrates to keep one’s immune system healthy and maintain energy levels. It is rich

by Chetna CHAWLA

in nutrients and with low GI and no added sugar these bars offer a nutritious, low calorie snack to satisfy hunger cravings. Although I am not a big fan of dark chocolate, it seemed to work really well in these bars; they are sweet enough without being overpowering. The serving size is quite gratuitous (60g) and being rich in fibre, it ensures to be a filling and healthy snack - a perfect accompaniment with your afternoon cup of tea or coffee. In comparison to the many other bars out there which claim to be healthier options, the BetterBump bars do not skimp out on taste or size. They are slightly on the pricier

side, however if healthy eating is something you are serious about, then you would know that these kind of products do tend to be more expensive. The different flavours are sure to please everyone and at just under 195 calories per bar, they are definitely one of the healthiest options available. The bars are convenient and can be eaten on-the-go, thrown into your bag or like me taken to school to the bemusement of all your friends. Guys, I swear I’m not pregnant. I’m just carrying a little bit of holiday weight. Whether you are pregnant, were pregnant or just looking for healthier options, the BetterBump is definitely something everyone should try. Although it is slightly harder to get your hands on them as they can only be purchased online or from About Life rather than in-store, it is worth the extra effort. You can order a box of 12 for AU$42, or receive a delivery each month.

roadtest BRONZED BY JEN The Jbronze Face Flawless Tan by Jennifer Hawkins is probably the best face tanning product I have used. It is full of goodies like Coconut Oil, Argan Oil and Shea Butter, which are great for your skin anyway, but because of these products in the mix, the cream easily massages into your skin. The product now delivers a slightly deeper tan than before, as the previous one was really more like a tinted moisturiser with quite light colouring. It’s an easy product to use, all you do is apply to clean, exfoliated, dry skin. Massage one to two pumps across face, neck and ears, making sure you avoid your eye area – it feels like a serum and is very easy to get even coverage. As with all tanning products, make sure you wash hands after application. I found it best to use at night as you need to wait for about four hours for the colour develop fully. If you want a more bronzed look simply apply the product again until you get your desired shade. Once you have reached the shade you

desire, continue to apply every three days to maintain that beautiful sun kissed glow. I found the colour to be very natural and because of its ease of use, there is very little chance of you ending up looking like an orange oompa loompa or as others describe it, an over flavoured cheese corn chip! AUSTRALIS VELOUR LIPS

I must say, I have been quite surprised by Velourlips Matte Lip Cream by Australis. I am not normally a fan of matte lip colours, especially in darker shades, but these work well. The lipsticks have a very velvety finish and their creamy texture makes them glide on with ease. They are lasting, but definitely not an all-day lasting lipstick, with re-application being needed after eating. Layering the product helps with this, but I still felt better reapplying the product after eating and drinking. The colours are rich and highly pigmented, care is needed when applying them – one slip and you are stuck with that colour in the wrong place for quite a long time. There is a wide range of colours that I think would suit most skin types. I didn’t find that this product flaked at all and I think that at $9.95 it is a very well-priced and good quality product. www.australiscosmetics.com.au

LUMA COSMETICS BY JESSICA HART IT’S SO NORMAL now to see brands on the shelves with celebrity endorsement - it seems like every brand has a face behind it that we would recognise. Luma is no different. Created by Australian supermodel, Jessica Hart, Luma offers a range of naturally derived cosmetics for that natural beauty look. Keeping in mind the brand is targeted towards natural beauty, it must be noted that the products in this range are extremely light in colour. That was definitely the case with the eye shadows, which come in stunning packaging with the signature pink case. The shadows inside were extremely light in pigmentation, whether applied wet or dry, fingers or brush. Luma offers a beautiful colour selection, however if you are after something more than just the barest of tints of colour, these are not for you. The blush had more colour, but it is still on the sheer side; however when applied with the Luma powder brush, a beautiful natural glow can be achieved. As the brush is quite dense and firm, it is able to pick up a heavier amount of

by Holly SCAUNICH

product, ensuring colouring can be achieved. Held at a different angle, it also blends quite well. The shimmer in the blush gives light to the face and the shades themselves will be universally flattering. It’s always important that all skin tones can be catered for in a range of cosmetics, otherwise a whole market can be forgotten. The Luma Liquid Foundation has achieved that with the range of colours being able to adapt to many skin tones. The foundation is also extremely sheer, with quite a few layers required to give a light to medium coverage. Keep this in mind when purchasing a colour as applying a number of layers can change that colour. The product has a nice amount of staying power, but people with oilier skins should careful as the luminous finish can increase shine. Overall,

it’s a great addition for day to day wear and has the added bonus of SPF. With the SPF foundation already sheer as it is, I don’t really see the need for the tinted moisturiser. The moisturiser has a nice feel to it, however the tint is close to nonexistent. Due to its lack of ability to layer, I would suggest it as a nice primer for those with drier skins who would benefit from the added moisture. Again adding the SPF is a greatly welcomed addition and the colour selection is quite nice and adaptable. Being sheer it will work on any skin tone. With a wide range of products for every need, I believe the Luma range does stay true to that natural beauty claim.

Orange & Lime Marmalade swirled through it for a surprising and yummy tang. My first experience with Hank’s Jams was just after Christmas, when, thoroughly sick of plum pudding and mince tarts, I decided to make a batch of scones. Served hot from the oven with butter melting, I topped them with the Rich Orange Marmalade. Marmalade isn’t a favourite within my household (except for me) but this marmalade doesn’t have that bitterness that many others do. It is rich and robust in flavour and the taste of orange peel is subtle.

These scones with Hank’s marmalade were a resounding success with everyone going back for seconds. Hank’s special Chilli Jam Pizza is a rich spread that is great over a pizza base and then topped with prosciutto, goats cheese and rocket. Not only good as part of a meal, this Chilli Jam is perfect as part of a cheese/deli platter. I spooned some into a bowl, served with biscuits, toasts, cheeses and prosciutto and stood back as the crowds rushed me. Some were hesitant to try the Chilli Jam, as it is often thought of as being too hot, or ‘bitty’, but once sampled by those who were a bit cautious the bowl was emptied quicker than I could believe! roadtest PHOTOJOURNALISM – THE PROFESSIONALS’ APPROACH BY KENNETH KOBRÉ WHEN A BOOK reaches its sixth edition, it’s usually because of one or two things – it’s a classic work of fiction, or outdated but used in a lot of schools. Happily, Photojournalism – The Professionals’ Approach (PTPA) is neither of these things. It has clearly been updated with each new edition and the 2013 printing contains a lot of relevant, up to the minute technology. There’s still a few things which need to be culled... DAT? Anyone remember DAT? But that’s by-and-by for such a well written tome. As a photographer, I often get asked the same questions over and over again by other budding photographers. I like to help people, but sometimes it just gets a bit old. This one book, however, answers most of those questions. It sounds unbelievable, but when you think about it further, it’s not all that odd. A photojournalist is a master of all trades. Sport shooter one afternoon, red carpet photographer that night and then

up early the next morning to do a sunrise shoot with some racehorses before the Caulfield Cup. And you need to know how to shoot everything without thinking about it. So, when we peel back the cover, and the cd slips out, we find a very well organised read, covering almost everything there is to know about the life of a photojournalist. Breaking news is broken down to assignment beats, cops, politicians, and spot news merges into general news where you might have a little more time to shoot. PTPA covers portraits, and how to light these quickly, with get in – get out at the forefront. There’s a huge technical analysis of how to shoot sports, even including things like minimum shutter speeds for various

sports and camera positions. It answers many questions new photographers have in a matter-offact and logical way. Only after a lot of styles of shooting are covered does the book move on to what gear to carry for each different style of job – a deliberate order I think – as many photography books spend the first few chapters talking exclusively about gear. PTPA gives a subtle acknowledgement that it’s not really the gear that matters, it’s the photographer. It’s a very professional approach, showing tremendous insight. Moving with the times, PTPA takes a few chapters to talk about multimedia presentations, and how to shoot video and get the best audio possible in any given situation – and if there is simply nowhere quiet to record an interview – go and do the interview in a car! Preferably a German one and not a convertible. Very importantly, there is an entire chapter dedicated to ethics. It is not a preachy chapter at all, but sets out a lot of examples where photojournalists have been fired for doctoring images, making composites, editing out coke bottles or asking the people in the photos to perform a ‘redo’ because they missed the shot. There is a long discussion on how standards for integrity have actually strengthened over past decades, which seems at odds with our fake airbrushed worlds. We now hold our newspaper and wire services to a much higher standard of truth

in pictures, though the reader is left to ponder why this is so. As the book winds down, one of the final chapters is ‘Turning Pro’ which answers a LOT of questions for budding photographers. Unfortunately, given that Australian publications have in the last year culled more than half of their staff photographers, some of the suggestions given in PTPA will simply not work any longer. But there is still a wealth of information there that can be applied to other outlets. This book comes with my highest recommendation for any photographer starting out as a news/media photographer.

roadtest OUR BEST SELLING SUV JUST GOT BETTER MAZDA HAS SOME bad news for rival manufacturers with the arrival of its updated CX-5. Already Australia’s best-selling SUV, the new CX-5 features sharper stying, an extensively upgraded interior, and a price reduction to most models. The entry-level FWD Maxx is the only model available with a manual transmission, and starts at $27,190, a reduction of $690, with automatic transmission adding $2,000. Our test car - Maxx Sport - starts at $32,790 (down $830) and features alloy wheels in place of Maxx’s 17inch steel rims, along with fog lamps, auto headlamps and wipers, dualzone air-conditioning and satellite navigation. AWD with the 2.5L engine adds $3,000 to the price of both vehicles. The Grand Tourer, with 19-inch alloy wheels, LED lights front and rear, power adjustable front seats with black or white leather and front and rear parking sensors, weighs in at $43,390. At $47,410, the top-

of-the-range Akera is the only model to rise in price but includes radar cruise control with auto-braking, adaptive high-beam headlamps, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist and a driver attention alert. Maxx Sport, Grand Tourer and Akera are also available with a diesel engine, at a cost of $38,990, $46,590 and $50,610 respectively. Inside, Mazda has optimised available space to increase rear leg room and head room throughout. Storage space has also increased as a result of changes to the centre stack and floor console. These

changes include open space in front of the shift knob and console cup holders. Along with a new seat structure that ensures a comfortable and supportive ride for both front and rear occupants, Mazda has also equipped CX-5 with its MZD Connect car connectivity system. Featuring a seven-inch screen and a rotary dial controller between the front seats, the system includes internet connectivity, giving access to apps such as Stitcher and Pandora. Satin chrome highlights and an electrically-operated park brake (in place of the previous mechanical unit) further enhance the interior’s appeal. Mazda also promises a quieter ride, thanks to improved underbody insulation and thicker glass, the company claiming a reduction in cabin noise of around 10 per cent over the previous model when driving at highway speeds. Safety is high on Mazda’s agenda, with every model in the range

With dynamics approaching those of a sedan, our 2.5-litre/auto Maxx Sport CX-5 impressed with an excellent ride and superb handling, helped in part by the provision of new front and rear dampers and optimised bushing shapes for the front lower arms. Although CX-5 is not the first car that comes to mind when planning a drive though the winding Black Spur, our test run was a revelation. With impressive turn in and minimal bodyroll, CX-5 not only handled the road with ease, it provided – dare we say – a satisfying and rewarding driving experience.

featuring six SRS Airbags, DSC, ABS, EBD, plus a reverse camera. A $1,230 Safety Pack is available for Maxx and Maxx Sport, ($1,060 for Grand Touring), which includes an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and a city brake support function that automatically slows the car down when it detects an obstacle at speeds between 4km/h and 30km/h. The engines are carried over from the previous model; a 2.0-litre fourcylinder petrol with 114kW/200Nm for front-wheel drive variants and either a 138kW/250Nm 2.5L

cylinder petrol engine or 2.2L turbodiesel with 129kW/420Nm for the all-wheel drive models. There’s also a choice of six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic transmission. Auto petrol variants now feature Drive Selection that allows drivers to press a switch located beside the shift lever to change to the Sport drive mode, which provides increased engine response. While the exterior and interior upgrades are certain to please CX5’s legion of fans, it’s on the road that the SUV really shines.

health

OOPS, UMMM PARDON ME… IT’S BECAUSE OF our lifestyle, it affects everyone from time to time and it can cause untold embarrassment – what is it I am talking about? Gas! Excessive gas, bloating and constipation are often caused by us being overworked; due to our time constraints we consume fast food, processed foods and toxins. Fizzy drinks, diets that are high in gluten, dairy, red meat and sugar, along with low intake of vegetables, water and alcohol as well as living with stress are contributing factors for the same condition. Many people believe that one’s well-being and good health begin with a healthy digestive system – but it is just too easy with our modern lifestyles to not do the right thing for our bodies. Consequently, we end up with faecal accumulation, which is not at all healthy. Some statistics state that for 90 per cent of us, simply going to the toilet is not enough to eliminate all the toxins that build up in our digestive system. Even if we live a healthy lifestyle that includes drinking lots of water, eating vegetables and other foods high in fibre as well as exercising regularly, toxins will remain in our system. These toxins in our systems are often linked to a multitude of medical conditions from skin allergies and bad breathe to bowel cancer. Colon cleansing can assist in removing this toxic waste that your body may not be removing effectively now. Often called colonic irrigation, colonic hydrotherapy, colonic cleaning, this treatment was said to be used by Cleopatra in Ancient Egypt to increase energy and enhance beauty but much more recently, the late Princess Diana, WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

Goldie Hawn and Demi Moore. Colonic cleansing is said to make the digestive system more effective. It can prevent constipation, increase your energy and your body’s ability to absorb vitamins and nutrients, kick start weight loss, decrease your risk of colon cancer, increase fertility and improve your wholebody well-being. With all of this in mind, it is very obvious that the role our colon plays in our lifestyle is very important, and being a major functioning part of our body, it needs to be cared for by qualified professionals. Sweet Cheeks Colonic Irrigation is an accredited member of the Australian Colonic Hydrotherapy Association (ACHA). Their staff are trained colon therapists who also have previous experience working as either Div I, II & Pathology Nurses or Patient Care Attendants (PCAs) in the Health and Aged Care industries. They are dedicated to their clients’ privacy, wellbeing and to providing a safe, clean environment that surpasses

stringent hospital standards. With their background in the health industry, they have extensive experience working in and maintaining sterile environments, ensuring the health and safety of clients and staff. WHAT TO EXPECT? When you arrive you will have a consultation to discuss any particular bowel conditions you

may have. You are then taken to a completely private suite and provided with a towel, some lubrication and a tube and then left to set yourself up. You remove everything from the waist down, set yourself up on the seats that are TGA approved and designed to ensure the highest quality of safety, sanitation and comfort, and cover yourself with the towel for modesty. Once you are set up, a colonic specialist comes into the room and turns on the treatment. You are then left in complete privacy while the procedure takes place and you have a screen in front of you with lots of different movies and TV shows to watch. There is a clock on the wall that counts down the time of the procedure (either 45mins for regular water treatment colonics or up to a couple of hours for coffee colonics). At the end of the procedure you jump off and dress yourself. Many people say the procedure is much more comfortable and private than they were expecting, they also say it is a strange but lovely feeling and that they left feeling less bloated and energised. Many also say that they have less flatulence, better blood circulation and more restful sleep. Sweet Cheeks offers a variety of treatments including their ‘Cheeky’ coffee irrigation treatment that will help remove toxins that accumulate in your liver and remove free radicals from your bloodstream. Regarded as a natural stimulant, the Sweet Cheeks coffee colonics detox program actively attacks the build up of bile in the body and restores bowel harmony while relieving symptoms of fatigue, headaches, excess weight, liver damage and pericardial pain. health if the comfort shoe fits, wear it! HOW MANY TIMES have you come home from work and can barely walk because your feet are just so sore? As a podiatrist, it was something that Caroline McCulloch was used to hearing from her patients on almost a daily basis. But when a client responded unfavourably to part of Caroline’s advice, it kicked off a whole new way of thinking. “(One day) a patient cried when I recommended comfort shoes as part of her treatment,” said Caroline. “She turned the tables on me and asked if I would wear the shoes I was advising her. I said no. And that’s the truth. Would I compromise my style sensibility by rocking chemist shoes? Absolutely not! So how could I ask my clients to do the same? It was a huge light-bulb moment for me.” So Caroline, who is also a physiotherapist, set about designing a range of comfort shoes - where she could end the conflict between comfort and style, and from this, the brand FRANKiE4 was born. “My technical brain dukes it out with my style sensibility on a daily basis,” joked Caroline. But it’s this very battle between Caroline-thehealth-professional vs Caroline-thefashionista that defines FRANKiE4. The removable foot bed of these shoes has a deep heel cradle that supports and cushions the heel. Arch support minimises over pronation and supports flat feet, which improves foot and leg alignment. It supports the metatarsals and is made of blown polyurethane for entire foot cushioning. If an orthotic is required, simply remove the foot bed completely. All prototypes are first trialled internally on women who are on their feet all day to ensure the fit and function are right. A shoe can have all the bells and whistles, but WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

if it does not fit then all the comfort and functionality is lost. “Nothing motivates me more than receiving incredible feedback from customers about how FRANKiE4 has fixed them and changed their lives. It lights a fire inside me and has me racing back into the design

room to work on more ideas! “Women no longer need to compromise! I’m saving soles in style – for myself, my clients and women everywhere!” www.frankie4.com.au

the wine trail Treasures from the Golden Mile THE WWW (WHO, WHERE & WINE) Stoneleigh of Marlborough New Zealand www.stoneleigh.co.nz toneleigh Vineyard is situated in the heart of the Rapaura area on the northern side of the Wairau Valley in Marlborough, New Zealand. Within two kilometres of the Wairau River and the Richmond Ranges, their home lies within an area known locally as the Golden Mile of vineyards. I really lucked out when the journo team of Prodijee interviewed Jamie Marfell – the brilliant winemaker of Stoneleigh. I had been savouring the beautiful fruity flavours of this particular Marlborough vineyard for years and when the team came back with five beautiful examples of this man’s craft, I could not wait to start. This review is unusual in that I will cover all five in this one article. Not for any other reason than this is the way I want to do it, and I also feel that it speaks very well of the vineyard and winemaker as it does of the individual wines. The first to be opened was the Stoneleigh Latitude Sauvignon Blanc 2014. This wine displayed a beautiful clear light straw colour and citrus aromas wafted up as I was pouring. The first sip just bounced off my tongue and I was hooked from then on. This is not a regular Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough and I mean that in a good way. I find almost all Sauvignon Blanc from the region to be great, but this one was just a little different - just as good, if not better. It was not heavy on citrus and fruit like many others, but still very full of flavour - it was just way too easy to drink. A couple of nights passed and a meal opportunity came up to open the Stoneleigh Marlborough Pinot Noir Rosé.

great nose of true Pinot grapes mixed with strawberry scents just invited the senses to quench the growing thirst. “The first sip just bounced off my tongue and I was hooked from then on. It was just way too easy to drink. simply delightful” The wine was very inviting with that undeniable light, strawberry, pink hue screaming “Open Me”. Once opened and poured, that

on giving to the end of the bottle. It was definitely one of the lightest Rosés I have had, making it perfect for any occasion and cuisine – it is

simply delightful. I could not wait for a specific dining experience to open the next one, so I just jumped in and opened it to share with some friends - Stoneleigh Latitude Pinot Noir 2013. There are just some wines that look good and this is one of them. Sitting in the glass and revealing a glorious ruby red that any gem merchant would envy, I drank in the light nose of pinot noir with the most subtle hint of muskiness that made it really heady, especially for a 2013. The flavour was beautiful, being fresh, fruity and light but complex and full of flavour. It swirled all around to the back of my tongue and settled there with full flavour and a real pinot taste. This wine would be great for dinner of either meat or fish or a

café pizza and then again after dinner with breads and cheese. I had to get back onto the whites and the perfect opportunity came with the bottle that I had enjoyed many times in the past - Stoneleigh Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Sitting in the glass as pretty as a picture, this Sauvignon Blanc is very light and clear. The aroma is by far one of the best I have smelled and never tire of. It is heavy on passion fruit aroma, yet it does not have a passion fruit flavour, it is full of citrus tones but has just the right balance so as not to not be too lemony. This Sauvignon Blanc leaves you with a fresh clean palate and, well chilled, it is perfect on a hot day for lunch or in the afternoon with a cheese platter. This Stoneleigh Sauvignon Blanc is my first choice of wine to accompany a bucket of prawns whilst sitting outside and enjoying the views at any one of Australia’s fantastic outdoor eateries. Last cab off the rank was the Stoneleigh Marlborough Pinot Noir 2013. The light and clear, gem red colour glinted in the light as it swirled around my glass. This Pinot Noir has a lovely soft nose with a beautiful fresh grape scent. My first sip fell over my palate with a rush of flavour that sat nicely at the back of my throat and had a subtle after note of tannin. It’s terrible to say, but from the first sip, I regretted opening it to share with others. I look forward to another bottle, yes, shared with friends, but this time chilled and served with cheese and antipasto platters. It’s a great wine to have with lunch or dinner, or any time in between or after – yes, it’s perfect with everything. A huge thankyou to Stoneleigh for giving me this opportunity. I have already started to pay you back as I went out and bought a dozen of the Stoneleigh Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc at my local First Choice liquor outlet – true!

There is now real fear in the house that I will bust the budget buying the rest of these truly delicious and ‘drink now’ little masterpieces. Look out for the Jamie Marfell interview and story in this issue of Prodijee.

ARE WE THERE YET? FAMILY HOLIDAYS CAN BE HEAVEN OR HELL, SO TO MAKE SURE YOURS IS THE FORMER, TAKE NOTE OF THESE ESSENTIAL AIRLINE TRAVELLING TIPS.

t doesn’t matter where you go, travelling with kids is always an adventure. Planning is key to make sure your journey runs as smoothly as possible, especially if you’re going overseas. If things take an unexpected turn, keeping your kids, yourself and your belongings safe (including precious little teddy) is crucial. The people at 1Cover Travel Insurance understand what it’s like to contend with all the possibilities of travelling with kids so their team have shared their top tips to keep everyone happy and safe on a plane.

I

1. FLY DIRECT OR STOP OVER Breaking up the trip can be a great way to get two holidays in one go. However it’s all about timing, a short 12 hour stopover can work if you book a hotel day room at an airport hotel to help with jet lag. Hong Kong has a great hotel within the terminal, Singapore also has sleep rooms that can hired. Plus because Singapore Airport is quick to exit you’ll be able to find good hotels within 15 minutes of the Airport. Dubai after a long flight is also great for a stopover. 2. AIRPORTS ARE EXCITING – GET THOSE WINDOW SEATS! Kids generally love airplanes, plus all the sights, sounds and smells of the airport. My son loves watching the wing flaps going up and down, the baggage getting loaded and all the other planes moving around. If you have two kids, and there are four of you in total, it’s best to travel in two rows so both of the kids get a window seat - it saves all the screaming and arguing mid-flight! There is a great research tool called SeatGuru, where you can see the airline seat map of your flight prior to check in - it rates good and bad seats. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

3. THE INFLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT Check out the airline inflight entertainment guides ahead of time. It’ll be exciting for the kids. Several of the airlines have a parents/kids setting to ensure they don’t watch anything inappropriate. Also we all know the kids love their gadgets whether phones or iPads. It goes without saying, load them up with anything from Peppa Pig, Adventure Time, Toy Story or download kids apps to keep the kids busy. 4. ORDER THE KIDS MEALS AHEAD OF TIME Sounds obvious, but many people forget to order the kids meals ahead of time. The last thing you want is junior complaining about an adult meal and being hungry the whole flight. The other great benefit of kids meals is they are normally brought first out, meaning they eat first and you can relax with wine and a movie... hopefully. 5. GET A SEAT NEAR THE EXIT ROWS – MAKE A CAMP Now this could work either way. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

Sometimes being near the exit also means being near the toilet, which we all know is horrible as people queue near your seat and the odour is well, not nice. However, on our last flight back from Singapore, our daughter found space on the floor with two other children the same age; they chatted and played

in a little ‘camp’ in the space for several hours. Pure bliss for us, plus she was happy as she made some new friends. 6. THE CUSTOMS QUEUE – BE NICE AND ASK You’re shattered after a long flight, you land and see a huge line for

customs... it’s not the best feeling! The US is notoriously slow (get ready for photos and fingerprinting) and Sydney Airport can be really busy for early morning flights. Sydney, to its credit, is getting better with its self-service lines now available. However, if you’re stuck in a nightmare line, it doesn’t hurt to ask customs if they can help express you to the front. You might not get anywhere but there’s no harm in asking, you might even find an understanding customs officer who’s also a parent. 7. ‘HUNT THE BAG’ GAME When everyone is tired and grumpy after 20 hours of flying it’s the perfect moment to keep them going one last time. Play ‘Hunt the bag’ as 500 identical looking bags make their way on to the carousel! You can also try the car game Spotto (whenever you spot a certain coloured car you shout Spotto) but for luggage. Extra points are awarded for spotting red and yellow cases. Hopefully the kids are distracted, and more importantly, your baggage arrives and hasn’t gone missing! www.1Cover.com.au

Bellissimo! ITALY IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS IMMACULATE QUALITY SHOES AND CLOTHES, IT’S THE HOME OF MANY RENOWNED DESIGNER HOUSES, WINE AND RESTAURANTS. WE CAN’T ALL MAKE IT TO ITALY TO ENJOY THESE THINGS, BUT I HAVE DISCOVERED MY OWN TASTE OF TOP QUALITY ‘ITALY’ RIGHT HERE IN THE HEART OF MELBOURNE. WORDS: CAROL SHERIDAN.

radi’s menu showcases the food of Naples and passionately maintains the focus on what has made the name Gradi famous - giving all diners the opportunity to experience the very best Italian ingredients and produce. Johnny Di Francesco, owner of Melbourne’s renowned 400 Gradi, 400 Gradi Cicchetti, and 90 Secondi, has wooed Melbourne’s CBD with his latest offering, Gradi at Crown, bringing an authentic taste of Naples to the city. Johnny said he felt very fortunate to be opening a second restaurant at Crown. “Having made pizza since I was 12, my passion for cooking has only intensified over time. I’m so blessed to be able to do what I love and I hope that joy infiltrates everything that I make.” Fortunate Johnny may be, but believe me, when you have your

G

chance to dine at Gradi, you will be the fortunate one. When you walk into Gradi, the first thing you will notice is the size, it’s massive. The décor is second to none with its highclass Italian features, a Venetian

style Cicchetti bar, bottles of wine in beautiful glass cabinets, a salumi counter where you can watch an abundance of perfectly cured meats get sliced, enormous wheels of cheese and a view out to Riverwalk. When we visited Gradi we were expecting a quick lunch, and had appointments booked all

afternoon. We didn’t have time to peruse the substantial menu so we left our dining experience in the hands of lovely manager, Emily, who asked a quick few questions as to our likes, dislikes and if we had any food intolerances. Off she went with a knowing smile, saying she would be back shortly with our first course. Almost immediately, a small dish of olives was placed into the middle of our table and was quickly followed with some glasses of beautiful Italian red wine. My dining partner is not a fan of olives, but I am, so this suited me perfectly – nobody to share them with. Bonus! They were delicious. A few different varieties of olive, all beautifully coated in a mild oil so as to not lose, but accentuate, the flavour. The restaurant wasn’t overly crowded, but had a good number of patrons. It was nice to sit back and relax after a hectic morning before the chaos that was our planned afternoon, and it was WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

lovely to take in the ambience of this magnificent restaurant. Cheese and cured meats were the next to be delivered to our table. They were served in a way I had not seen before. It was served on the obligatory rustic board, but the board was layered with paper. It was further layered with a thin wafer of Sardinian Carasau, which was the base for both the cheeses and meats. Emily explained each cheese and meat, and recommended a wine that would complement this course. Naturally we took her advice, and she was right, her knowledge of matching wine with food was proving to be very accurate. What can I say about the three cheeses and five cured meats served – delicious, fresh, beautifully presented and obviously top quality – not your regular supermarket stuff! Again, my dining partner is not a massive fan of cheeses but still had his fair share of the goodies on both of these food boards – I, on the other hand, am a huge fan of this type of food and was WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

quickly breaking off bits of the beautifully crisp Carasau, topping them with meat and cheese and devouring them. From here on I was in a bit of a food coma. Red wine, magnificent food – it was time to put back my afternoon appointments – well, now I must ‘fess’ up – I didn’t just put them back, I cancelled! Oops – sorry to those of you who were affected, but make a trip to Gradi and you will understand

completely. With the food coma firmly in place in my head, I cannot remember the order, but a variety of food (and wine) arrived at our table. Arancino (Arancini), which I have never been a huge fan of; rice in gooey white cheesiness that is rolled then breadcrumbed and fried has always left me feeling a bit squeamish. Gradi’s Arancino is a crumbed rice ball

with pork sausage, mascarpone and parmesan cream – 100 per cent delicious and not like any Arancino I have eaten before, I am now a huge fan of this delicacy, but only the Gradi one. Johnny’s famous 99 cheese pizza was also delivered to our table. It’s not always on the menu so we were very privileged to get to taste it. It has taken Johnny and his team a lot of experimentation but they have the recipe ‘bellisimo’. I didn’t think it could be possible to have 99 different cheeses on a pizza, but they have done it. I won’t tell you how, but it holds everything from aged cheddar to double cream brie. It is rich, gooey and delicious. We were also served Montanare Fritte - deep fried pizza dough. I knew it was coming, and I must admit, I wasn’t really looking forward to it. Pizza dough, fried? Hmmm, it didn’t sound like something I would (or could) eat. Think again! The platter held three large (softball size) balls of deep fried pizza dough, each with a different but small amount of topping. They turned out to be pillows of light and fluffy deliciousness that were extremely addictive. What started out as my ‘not really me’ food has turned into my ‘must order’ on my next visit. As the food coma had set in ages ago, the Montanare Fritte had pushed me to the level of ‘not one more morsel can pass these lips today’. With a vast menu ranging from cheese and oysters to pasta, pizza, lamb and everything in between, Gradi offers a diffusion of authentic Italian gastronomic cuisine. Everything served to us was presented beautifully, the produce used was top quality and the wait staff were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. If you are lucky enough to have Emily look after you during your

dining experience at Gradi, say hi from me. What a character! She is a bundle of fun and laughs, all the while keeping everything very professional, and her knowledge of the food and wine is unsurpassed. And while you are sitting there devouring this divine cuisine, keep an eye out for ‘celebrities’. The world’s top tennis players have dined at Gradi, as have Formula 1 drivers, television personalities, politicians and recently, Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger. Word of Gradi has got out, and the crème de la crème of the sporting and entertainment worlds have heard about our very own touch of Italy in Melbourne. Gradi is located on the Ground Floor of Crown Casino Riverwalk. Bookings can be made on (03) 9696 9888 and I sincerely hope I get invited back to dine on Johnny’s amazing cuisine – in particular the desserts which I didn’t get anywhere near to fitting in my overfull tummy. just sayin’ I’m a smoker, so suck it up and butt out of my life kay, here it is - my confession… I am a smoker! There, I said it – now I will sit back and wait to be judged. I started smoking when I was young, it was the cool thing to do, and I have to say, at that time, nobody really knew of the health issues that smoking is said to cause. It was hinted about, but certainly not like it is now where we are constantly bombarded with the horrific things that this ‘disgusting’ habit can do to our bodies. When I was pregnant with my first child I gave up smoking, in fact, I gave up for 20 years, but I was never a reformed smoker. Every time I could smell that ‘delightful’ cigarette smell I would crave one. Eventually I gave into temptation and took up the habit again – I blame it on stress. I will admit that I never smoked when I was out in the street, but socially I would have a puff or two when I was having a glass of wine, or rush outside to light up when my stress levels reached sky high. My habit, whilst it is still there, is pretty much under control – meaning – I still have the occasional cigarette socially and I try to avoid stressful situations at all costs, but there are times when there is nothing that will calm me down except to light up. Yes, I know all the health risks, and I also know that medical professionals tell us that smoking only increases stress levels. It’s a statement by the medical fraternity that I strongly disagree with. I don’t leave cigarette butts around, I don’t blow smoke into people’s faces, I keep my habit to outdoors and as much as possible, to myself.

sporting events, no smoking in parks, no smoking at beaches, no smoking here, no smoking there, no smoking just about everywhere. And, believe it or not, I support most of this. But now there is a movement to stop people smoking on their own balconies. Really? So far, this doesn’t affect those who live in free standing houses, but in apartment blocks and where there are multiple dwellings on one lot of land. The people behind this movement say that it is because of the smell. They don’t like smelling cigarettes. They are not complaining about the health issues – they can’t, because they aren’t breathing in the smoke as a passive smoker would, they can just smell it. If they were breathing in second hand smoke I would support their movement, but for just the smell? Really? I accept that a lot of people don’t

like the smell of cigarettes, but, if this movement becomes a law – restricting people smoking in their own properties, then I will start my own movement – the one where I can have a law made to stop people cooking in their apartments. I can get violently ill at the smell of cooking fish, I dry wretch at the smell of boiling meat, and don’t forget the smell of curry that wafts

around for days and lingers even longer in the drapery in my home. If we live in a community type dwelling, we need to be a bit more tolerant of other people and their habits. I am sure every single one of us has a habit that is in one way or another going to annoy someone else. We all have rights, but I must admit to believing that the smokers of this world have had more than their fair share of rights taken from them.

ABSINTHE IT’S LOUD, IT’S BAWDY, IT’S DISGUSTING BUT IT IS ALSO HILARIOUS AND SOOOOOO MUCH FUN! HOLD ONTO YOUR HAT, ABSINTHE HAS ARRIVED IN AUSTRALIA. WORDS: CAROL SHERIDAN. PHOTOS: MARK TURNER.

nspired by the absinthedrenched cabarets of late nineteenth century Europe, ABSINTHE is an adultthemed cocktail of circus, comedy, burlesque and vaudeville for a twenty-first century audience. In Las Vegas, the show has been playing to sold-out audiences at the world’s most famous casino, Caesars Palace, since 2011 and celebrates its fourth anniversary in April. Celebrities regularly flock to join the audience and have recently included Britney Spears, James Franco, Neil Patrick Harris and Olivia Newton-John. ABSINTHE is hosted by the filthy rich and just plain filthy Gazillionaire and his loyal assistant Penny Pibbets, who have become two of the most acclaimed and subversive comedy forces in Las Vegas in recent years. Intoxicating songs are performed live by the seductive sylph, The Green Fairy. The performance is staged in a century old spiegeltent, a unique venue that is beautifully crafted from teak, stained glass, mirrors and luxurious velvet.

Other acts include Oleksandr Volohdn building an impossibly high chair mountain; The Lost Souls with their stunning acrobatic Banquine Act; the sensuous Jacob Oberman and Maika Isogawa on the Duo Straps; Michael Nowosadko and Zbigniew Sobierakski displaying extraordinary grace and strength with their Hand Balance; and The Frat Pack on the daring High Wire. I made a point of seeing this show while in Las Vegas, and while the Australian version of ABSINTHE is slightly different, it is a production I can highly recommend.

She’ll be right mate, this is the Lucky Country s there a link between calling our country the lucky country and not putting in any effort? Do we use it as a kind of default setting so as not to have to put any effort into anything? I attended an Australia Day ceremony this year, where the guest speaker was none other than Bill Shorten, the leader of the opposition. He was speaking to a crowd of migrants who were becoming Australian citizens that day, as well as their friends, family, and other award recipients. He called Australia ‘The Lucky Country’ a number of times in his speech... and it made me wonder. What does calling this place lucky do to one’s psyche? Let’s review a few other lucky things. Mary won Tattslotto! WOH! Lucky! John tripped on the footpath and landed on a display bed outside Forty Winks. Lucky! Chris was digging a hole for a campfire in Ballarat and found a 2kg gold nugget. Lucky! There’s a common thread in all this. Not much effort was required for the person to be lucky. So is there a link between calling our country the lucky country and not putting in any effort? Do we use it as a kind of default setting so as not to have to put any effort into anything - knowing that we are in the lucky country - and that one day our luck will change? Does it breed laziness? A sense of entitlement? And will our luck eventually run out? Or is it starting to already? Over the past few decades we have been really lucky to have found a bunch of useful stuff in the ground which we can pull out and which people place value on. The problem is the value is pretty low for

things like iron ore until you turn it into steel bars and sheeting. Then it becomes roofing, cars, suspension bridges and all manner of things. You’d think any country lucky enough to have that resource would be using it to gain a long term advantage compared to the rest of the world. But we don’t. Instead, as soon as the ground is dug up, the ore is put on a ship to Asia where they turn it into something useful using a whole batch of high tech and low tech methods. We then buy it back and use it to make heavily subsidised

cars and not much else. Lately, our submarine industry seems to have been saved in a roundabout way because our prime minister is afraid he might not be prime minister any longer.

“So is there a link between calling our country the lucky country and not putting in any effort? Do we use it as a kind of default setting so as not to have to put any effort into anything?”

Not because we make better subs, cheaper subs or any other benefit – maybe because the PM wants to curry favour? We’ve wood chipped almost every part of Australia, and sent it overseas... then bought all that wood back as paper and flat pack furniture. We were lucky to have all those trees but we’ve placed little value on them. Divesting is not only occurring with our natural resources but our intellectual capital as well. Many a scientist starts their career in Australia and then is forced overseas to continue their work and collect a shelf full of patents. Cuts to CSIRO and universities will only accelerate the exodus. How is this lucky? It’s often said that you make your own luck, but with all the brains flying overseas – how is it

possible in Australia? Looking a little deeper, allow me to delve into our luckiness. Mr Bradbury seemed like the luckiest guy in the world when he skated to victory at the Olympics after the competitors in front of him fell over just before the finish line. But what of the years of training required to get him to that point? It’s not really lucky to get to there – it takes lots of training and effort. Do we ‘really’ see the difference though? Perhaps those who have worked hard in their chosen field do, but what about those who have coasted? What about those who have come from an unlucky country? Can they sit back and do

the bare minimum...knowing they’re in the lucky country? She’ll be right, mate.

I’ll drink to that! THERE IS NOTHING NICER THAN KICKING BACK AND RELAXING ON A HOT DAY WITH AN ICE COLD DRINK, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE AT THE STONELEIGH POP UP BAR INSIDE THE METROPOL IN ST KILDA, MELBOURNE. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT CAROL SHERIDAN WAS DOING WHEN SHE MET UP WITH STONELEIGH WINEMAKER, JAMIE MARFELL. or Jamie Marfell, wine making was an inevitable career choice as he grew up on a farm overlooking a valley of grapevines in Marlborough, New Zealand. His holiday employment was usually spent planting or pruning vines, depending on the season. “As a university student I used to go around all the wineries and have a few drinks (it was free) and I got this taste for wine; Stoneleigh was one of the wineries we used to call on. The wines were pretty good back then, but they are better now,” recalled Jamie. After completing a degree in agricultural science and a postgraduate diploma in viticulture and oenology at Lincoln University, New Zealand, Jamie began his career as a trainee winemaker with Pernod Ricard in 1990. Jamie spent the first two years

F

of his career in his hometown of Blenheim before moving to Auckland to work on the company’s acclaimed sparkling wine range. This was interspersed with vintages in Gisborne, Marlborough and several vintages in Germany’s Mosel and Rhinehessen wine regions. In 2002 he returned to Stoneleigh, Blenheim, to concentrate on crafting distinctive Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. “Marlborough is the undisputed home of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and I’m thrilled to be focusing on the Stoneleigh range of wines. It is exciting to be continually developing and differentiating styles, while at the same time building sustainability of the varietal for the long term,” said Jamie. “I have been making wine since 1990 – my twenty-fifth vintage – 25 years I have been making wines in WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

Marlborough, and we have really only had one bad year, 2005. In those 25 years, it’s been consistent from year to year.” In Marlborough, grapes were planted in 1973 with the first production line occurring in 1975. The growers learnt quickly which variety of grapes worked and which didn’t, they pulled out the ones that didn’t work the way they wanted, or expected, and focused on those that worked well. “Things like Sauvignon Blanc, every year, is good, Chardonnay is good, and white wine is about 90 per cent of our production.” Jamie admits that the making of a good wine is more about the environment than the wine maker, and the environment in the Rapaura, Marlborough, New Zealand is unique. The ground of the Stoneleigh vineyard was once the bed of an ancient river. It is studded with precious stones that reflect sunshine back up into the vines and grapes so that they are bathed with warmth from above and below that intensifies the rich flavour of the grape. Due to the rocky land, the vines are starved of soil and moisture, and struggle to grow, thus concentrating their efforts into producing fewer but better grapes. “If you are growing on clay you get a richness and heavier style, but because we are on gravels, you get a flintiness and lovely acidity, so it tends to be fresher on the palate, it remains fresh on the palate and doesn’t get too heavy.” Temperature is also extremely important in producing the perfect grape. Marlborough has cold nights, which you need for the grapes to retain acidity. The micro climate in the Rapaura region is about one degree warmer at night; this produces a taste that has a pink grapefruit, lemony and passionfruit zing. Australia is Stoneleigh’s largest market, closely followed by Sweden, New Zealand and Canada; their award winning wines are in high demand because the company has WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

insisted on really good viticulture to take them to the next level. Over the years, different wine makers have left their mark on the quality and taste of the wine, with styles changing over the years. So while the quality of a wine is mainly about the quality of the grape, a winemaker can make a difference. “We did a tasting of Rieslings, from 1988 to what we are producing now, and you could actually see where the different winemakers had made a footprint on the wine. So, the wine styles changed, and had quite a major change in wine quality.” Jamie has also left his own footprint on the wine quality and style saying, “Sometimes you do something from year-to-year without making proper changes and not think about what you are doing. I’ve changed it. I realised that we had gone off-track (so) I grabbed it and took it back to what it used to be like.” With New Zealand wines being so highly sought after in Australia, they tend to get lumped into one camp, but there are quite a few different styles. Jamie recommends that if you find a particular wine you like, stick to it. “Year to year, (wine producers) source the fruit from the same vineyards and will produce a consistency in the product. “All of our wines are quite distinctive. Love them or hate them, there is definitely a different type of wine coming from Stoneleigh.” Everyone has different tastes, so how do you determine what is a good wine to buy? Jamie gives us his three tips for wine buyers. 1. Find a brand you like, because in New Zealand, wines tend to be consistent. Find a style you like and stick to it. 2. There is no general rule for drinking temperatures of wine – it’s environmental. If it’s a hot day, icy cold wine is great. Don’t listen to the ‘experts’ - drink it at a temperature you like. 3. Price doesn’t always reflect quality.

reality bites

Smart, slutty and sayin’ it out loud: An Interview with blogger Anne Marvin arvin’s first page concludes, “I read smut. Happily. Giddily. Passionately. And I’m tired of apologizing for it, or justifying myself or proving that I’m really not a mindless bimbo, no matter what I read.” On subsequent pages, she invites readers to join her on her journey to find higher truths in low fiction. Now, I don’t read smut and believe that depth is highly overrated but even I have to agree that there is truth in fantasy after reading Marvin’s site. And I also agree that a site devoted to the quest for truth and authenticity – and the fantastical places where it can be found – might be worth everyone’s time, regardless of how you choose to spend your leisure reading time. “I started this blog because a couple of months back because I’d decided, that despite my abiding passion for fantasy novels, I needed to give them up because they were distracting me from getting on with my ‘real’ work to improve the world and leave my mark upon it,” said Marvin when I spoke to her recently. She is as well educated as her three Ivy League degrees attest – a BA in History, MA in International Relations and PhM in Political Science, all from Columbia University in New York City where Marvin grew up – and she is as confident and articulate as those with such degrees tend to be. Titles like Vampire Hunter and Dark Lover don’t spring forth from the mouths of Ivy Leaguers… no matter what they’re reading, I learned as Marvin and I spoke. I’ve read several of her recent

posts and have learned a new nomenclature; ‘fey’ is a general term to describe pixies, fairies and all manner of magical creatures and ‘lycanthrope’ is a synonym for a werewolf. HEA means ‘happily ever after’ and it is how – not whether – characters in this genre reach that longed-for end.

“The reason for lower blood pressure amongst my Fretful Tribe is because if you’re always worried that the sky is going to fall, you’re kinda unfazed when it really does start to come down”

How they get there provides the enjoyment between the beginning and end of this genre of book. I also learned more about myself, as I found some of her points profound – hmmm, maybe depth is worth pursuing after all, especially if it can be found in fantasy literature. In What Scares the Monsters, Marvin asks readers to join her as she explores that which “scares the monsters… it’s worth looking at to see what inhabits their nightmares to understand how it might illuminate our own.” In this post, she goes on to discuss fears, her own, those of monsters and ones you might share with either or both. By analyzing the fears of two characters – Wrath from the Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward and Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, created by Laurell K Hamilton – Marvin artfully makes her point that real bravery involves you doing what really scares you off your own ass. “It’s like being able to see something in your peripheral vision that disappears when you look at it directly,” she said. Subsequent posts examine, ‘Love at First Sight’ (Marvin believes in it), ‘Worth Fighting For’ (what you devote your time to, says a lot about your priorities) and one of my favorites, ‘The Shelf Life of Sympathy’, in which Marvin examines how limited we humans are at soothing those who grieve. Marvin cites the lessons she learned from JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood that, “the gifts of presence and witness are highly underrated. We don’t have to do or say anything, in fact – we just have to be. We can just offer ourselves as fellow humans who either understand or don’t. Doesn’t matter,” Marvin advises. Other favorites from which Marvin draws valuable life lessons

are works by Lilo Abernathy, Rose Montague and Laura Kaye., whose books are now in my Amazon basket. I’ve subscribed to Marvin’s blog – she posts on Tuesdays and Fridays – and look forward to the smut and insight that will be delivered to my inbox in the coming months. I hope that you too will check it out because, as Marvin’s blog teaches us, insights about ourselves and our world

can be discovered where we least expect it.

It was here that I sat, after meeting with a few of my LA contacts, waiting for my next interview. In she walked, looking just like the girl next door. much more to her than simply the cute kid down the road. Rachel is a Maxim model, she stars in the US television series, Hillbilly Horror Show, has appeared in many film productions and has also appeared in music videos with Ricky Martin and Nicky Minaj; all

this in little more than two years. The character Rachel plays in Hillbilly Horror Show is the ‘hot kissing cousin’ – Lulu. Her character is wild and flirtatious, a role that may not have sat well with some actresses.

“When I first heard about her, I was a little bit nervous, I’m not going to lie, I hadn’t played a character that was as flirtatious as she was before,” recalled Rachel. “It was, not necessarily a challenge, but I had to be accepting of that character and be okay with wearing short shorts and stuff like that.” A self-confessed ‘goof-ball’, Rachel loves comedic roles; they allow her to have a lot of fun and to joke around with the cast and crew. She says the character, Lulu, doesn’t stray too far from home, other than the lack of clothing, which isn’t really in her nature. While comedic roles are easier for Rachel to play, she has had her fair share of dark and sinister roles as well. “I did a role for a movie called The Possession Experiment, and I had to kill myself in the movie. That was really cool to do, don’t get me wrong, but that takes a lot of emotional training. “When playing a dark role, I feel you really have to dial into your soul and think about things you don’t necessarily want to think about. You have to bring yourself down to an all-time low and really get depressed, it’s scary. It did bring me out of the box, but there is a

reason why we do that, and that’s what acting is. “Recently I auditioned to play a girl who was abused by her father and left on the road. It was so depressing. I had been doing all these comedic roles, so it was on the opposite side of the spectrum and I kind of had to go out of the box and really practise. It made me realise that comedic acting is what I want to drive more of my career towards. It’s more enjoyable.” But this is what acting is all about; you do what you need to do to get into character. “At first I relied on music, I would listen to songs that would give me that emotional trigger that brought me down to a monotone pace. Or, I would think about moments of my life that really touched my heart and made me upset. For me, my mum almost passed away when I was growing up, she was in the hospital for quite a few months, so I think about that and think about what has really hurt my heart. I don’t get upset by these now because I have grown out of that phase but I have WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

to dial back to that time of my life to get those emotions out of me.” At another recent audition, Rachel came away feeling very depressed, so she got in her car and cranked up the radio with some good and happy tunes which started to bring her back to reality and out of the depressive state that she needed to find for the role she played. She admits the emotional roller coaster

of acting “takes a toll on you”. Always having a love of being in front of a camera, Rachel jumped at the opportunity to shoot with a friend of hers who was a photography student to build both their portfolios. It was six months after this that she joined a modelling agency, where she says her modelling career began. “Modelling came as second

nature, which is weird. I think, at the time I started modelling, I had just come out of a three year relationship so I was very vulnerable. For me, it was almost therapeutic to open up in front of the camera and really touch into my emotions. I enjoyed it because it gave me a sense of confidence again; then it became my artistic expression. “I really enjoyed that and I had that connection with the photographer and the makeup artist, the whole team really.” In the two-and-a-half years that Rachel has been modelling, she has done shoots for editorial, fashion and commercial gigs, but has recently done a ‘mermaid workshop’ in the Bahamas where she says they just throw you out of the boat with your mermaid tail on and you swim around. “The modelling industry can be very interesting, but it (acting) gave me something more concrete and something that I could express myself in. I was silent acting before in front of the camera, but I had to learn how to open my mouth and convey my emotions.” Rachel’s acting career began in Virginia, USA, when she was approached by a casting director who asked if she would be interested in being an extra for a show on the Discovery Channel. Whilst acting had never been on her mind, Rachel, who had been very quiet growing up, had discovered an artistic side to herself through modelling. “It kind of opened my artistic outlet

“When playing a dark role, you have to dial into your soul and think about things you don’t want to think about. You have to bring yourself down to an all-time low and really get depressed, it’s scary” and once I was on set, just as being an extra, I realised just how closely related a modelling set and an acting set for television or film really are. But I liked how the acting side was; it was very much more organized.” With plans to go back to school one day, Rachel looks into the future.

“I just finished my degree in May, in exercise science, so I want to get my doctorate in Occupational Therapy – that will be about a two year program. I would like to work with special needs kids; I’ve always had a special place in my heart for them. I am hoping to do that eventually but still do acting on the side. I (also) want to continue with the modelling for as long as I can, I will take advantage of my youth in that sense.” Rachel is the first to admit that she is still in the learning process of acting; she is enjoying that process and while competition for acting and modelling roles is fierce, she plans on being here for the long haul. “You really have to keep your ambition and drive up because there are so many people wanting the same thing.” http://rachelfbabyy.format.com http://hillbillyhorrorshow.com WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

london calling Scotland - accessible by train, plane - heck even by foot! ’ve just spent a week in the majestic Scottish highlands with my family and I am in love with this country, more now than ever before. The drive is simple and easy, one straight road through the Lake District (another section of utter natural beauty) and in to Scotland. My family and I (pictured below, right) were able to do the 345 miles (555km) in around six hours; with the occasional stop it was easy. You could, however, fly in to one of Scotland’s numerous airports or travel to any local train station. I got to stay in the beautiful Lyn Leven cottage in Baallyulish near Ben Nevis and Fort William. At this time of year it is around £650 a week and can sleep up to eight people. In the summer months, this price does go up to more than £1000 but I believe it to be well worth it. I have never seen such majestic views on such a consistent basis. Just in the area I was staying there were many activities, for example; tree top adventures, zip lining, abseiling, rafting, kayaking, treacherous mountain walks and ice climbing to name but a few. With no real set plan on how we were going to spend our days, we awoke to new and exciting adventures. One such day was a gondola (cable car) ride up a mountain to a full on blizzard and snowstorm, simply amazing. Everyone was snowboarding, skiing and sledging. It was utterly incredible. I had some tea and cake in the UK’s highest restaurant and afterwards had a few exhausting and very fast trips down the

surrounds than the last and each with unexpected delights - from twelfth century ruins to 20ft (6m) waterfalls. Each day had almost every season; within minutes the weather would change from heavy rain to beautifully clear blue skies, then to chunks of snow and back again. The weather kept us on our toes; we never knew what to expect and it certainly provided a great and ever changing backdrop to any activity or photograph. Scotland is unbelievably historical and untouched. Thousand-year-old ruins lay around all over - just jutting out of the splendid skyline waiting to be discovered and explored. I took delight in wandering around and crawling all over the imposing thirteenth century Inverlochy Castle on the south bank of the River Lochy. Not a soul was in sight and it felt like my own little kingdom. Built around 1270-1280, it has seen three battles and is truly steeped in history. Here in Scotland, you feel that you can actually breathe and have room to simply exist. The air around me has never been fresher; the water never as clear; the people never as charming, helpful and friendly and the landscape never as beautiful. This is a great location for any adventuring soul or family. Scotland, you have stolen my heart. I will return very soon! www.lynleven.co.uk www.visitscotland.com www.nevisrange.co.uk

breaking big reaking into any career can be a challenge, but for actors and models, getting started can be a real nightmare. Show reels, acting demos, portfolio requirements – hair, makeup, photographer, studio, lighting, outdoor shoot location - the list goes on and on. Sure, you can get a friend pull out their smart phone and take a video or photos, another friend might be a bit of a whizz at hair and makeup, you can try to wing it for the right lighting and of course, you can just make up your little acting reel that you want to submit to a producer or director. While all of the above might work out ‘okay’, you are up against people who do their research and get professionals to help them through these processes. MM Productions offer a huge range of services to help aspiring actors and models. They thrive on being creative and make the experience fun for you and them, while keeping it professional at the same time. The team takes the time to get to know the model or actor. It is important to understand the personality of the person and when they get to know them properly, they will work on appropriate looks with hair and makeup for the shoots and offer a photography coach to help with poses and expressions. If an upcoming actor needs a show reel, the MM team will work with them on their scene and script. They will direct, film and edit the show reel making sure that the end result is of the highest quality. If you aren’t quite at the stage where you are ready for your shoot, MM Productions also offer acting coaching, using a mix of contemporary techniques that

will help get the best out of you. They will also help with audition coaching and will keep you up to date with the skills necessary in the film industry. As well as working with actors and models, they work closely with makeup artists and hairstylists, helping them build their portfolios, providing a model, photographing their work and editing the photos. Offering a full team of makeup artists, hair stylists, coaches, photographers, etc, they are passionate about what they do, and believe that’s what makes them different. It’s their passion for ‘creating a look’ that has led this business into an extra field – special effects makeup. Using only quality products by the likes of Kryolan, Ben Nye and MAC, MM Productions can turn you into almost anything you want to be. How does the Zombie look sound to you? Class A cars head down the mountain.

MOTORSPORT his year at the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour there was a bigger field of cars and drivers compared to 2014 – 54 cars competed in Australia’s longest endurance race at Mount Panorama, along with 150 drivers. Some of the brands that were racing this year included Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Audi and McLaren with some local and international drivers. Unfortunately during the first practice session the #88 Class A Maranello Motorsport Ferrari 458, which was the 2014 Bathurst 12 Hour winner, crashed and was unable to be repaired. One of the drivers from that

T

car in 2014, John Bowe, had fortunately switched to the Flying B Racing team, steering a vastly different machine to the Ferrari – a Bentley Continental. “The Ferrari is rear engine, so the weight distribution is very much biased towards the back,” said John. “The Ferrari tends to understeer a little, so it’s a very fine point of balance to get the car working properly without making it feel very nervy. “I wouldn’t say the Bentley is as good a car but it’s more predictable. It’s a front engine, rear drive (so) it’s more what I’m used to – essentially, it is like a bigger V8 Supercar with better aerodynamics. It’s pinned a bit better than the V8 Supercar but it’s not overly powered - on the straight it is 20km/h slower than a V8 Supercar The ill-fated Richards/Baird/ McMillan Lamborghini Gallardo chases the McLaughlin/ Winslow/Koutsoumidis Audi R8-LMS Ultra.

(but) from The Cutting to Forest Elbow it is a lot faster.” A long-time visitor to Mount Panorama, John said he hoped to continue racing at the circuit for many years to come. “I love it here, I would come here any chance I got, it’s great to be part of it, and it’s a great race. Liqui-Moly have lifted it, James O’Brien has lifted it, the GT3 category has grown and it’s now a really good event and it’s my thirty-first year of racing at Mount Panorama, I never get sick of it.” John was also looking forward to teaming with Australianinternational driver, David Brabham. “He’s a great bloke, a good driver and he has a lot of experience in long endurance races like Daytona (and) Le Mans. Peter Edwards, who owns the car, is going great guns too, for an amateur driver.” The #15A Phoenix Racing Audi R8, claimed ‘The Al’ pole trophy, named after the late Allan Simonsen, with a blistering lap of 2 minutes and 2.5521 seconds. The race started before sunrise at 5.50am on February 8, 30 minutes earlier than the previous year. This led to cars racing in pitch-black conditions. It wasn’t long before the first incident occurred when a car collided with a kangaroo on lap six, taking the #42 Class D BMW M3 GTR out of the race. At 7:26am, the second safety car was called for a heavy crash at Hell Corner involving the #14 Class B Peter Conroy Motorsport Porsche 997, and not long after that was cleaned up there was a two-car crash at Falken Elbow for the #51 Class B IMAK-KWIKMIT Porsche 911 and the #66 GT3 Endurance/ Mobil 1 Porsche 911. Spins were aplenty throughout the morning session, with a number of cars having ‘moments’ (but able to re-join the race), including the #14B Porsche prior to its Hell Corner incident, both Lamborghini Gallardo’s (#32A JBS Australia and #48A Interloy/M Motorsport

Class A Ice Break Porsche 911 team. It was Patrick’s second time at Bathurst; last year he raced with Ice Break in the B class, finishing second. He has raced in Australia on other occasions, including starts at the Gold Coast in the V8 Supercars with Garry Rogers and Walkinshaw Racing. With Patrick this time competing in the outright class, I asked him if there was much difference between Class A and Class B cars. “The B class cup car and the GT3-R are similar in horse power but the biggest differences are we have traction control, ABS and a lot more downforce in the GT3-R A Class. “The top speeds are similar – you make your lap time more in the high speed corners, bigger wings, bigger underfloor, bigger splitter, wider wheels, and wider track so you carry a lot more momentum across the top of the mountain. It really tests the driver because you have to get right to the edge of the aerodynamic downforce, and when you do you’re four-to-five seconds faster than you are in the standard Cup car.” The Mount Panorama circuit WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

holds plenty of attraction for the American, with Patrick saying the track demanded the very best from drivers. “Bathurst has lived up to everything, all the hype and then some it’s so quick but it’s very demanding, there is no room for error and if you slip up your race weekend could be over so it really tests the driver and you have to be spot on your game. It’s different to the modern European tracks where you can throw caution to the wind

(and) you can go off into the paved run off, here (Mount Panorama) you have to be right on your marks. “It builds up as you go up Mountain straight and then travelling through The Cutting starts your battle across the mountain. as you come down through Forest Elbow it just opens up into Conrod and the chase which is unbelievable. There is a lot of hard braking – it is very technical.” The last three hours of racing was stop-start with the safety car

intervening often. During the 12 hours of racing, the safety car was required 20 times, surpassing the 2013 record of 15 times. The last crash occurred 38 minutes from the end of the race when the #8A Flying B Racing Bentley Continental hit the wall at the exit of The Cutting, with the subsequent safety car creating an epic finish. Shortly after the restart, Katsumasa Chiyo took the chequered flag on behalf of team mates Florian Strauss and Wolfgang Reip in the #35A NISMO Global Athlete Group Nissan GT-R following 12 hours of intense racing at Mount Panorama.

ith Australia being the third largest digital advertising market in Asia and having the second largest number of surfers per capita, surfers enjoy some of the highest followers on social media. Riding that wave is Felicity Palmateer, who has partnered with San Francisco-based instant messaging app, Thumbkandi to become the first ever professional surfer to launch her own collection of emojis. Born in Western Australia and now living in Sydney, Felicity earned her way onto the women’s international surfing stage, beating five-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore at the 2013 Margaret River Pro, and competing alongside the world’s top surfers on the 2014 ASP World Tour. Felicity recently unveiled her debut art exhibition, ‘Bombora’ – presenting a unique tribal-like collection of water colour canvas prints, etched surf boards and individually handcrafted ceramics.

Now keen to satisfy her younger demographic of fans, Felicity said she was excited to be able to combine her love for surfing and art to offer something special for her social media fans. “I’ve been able to combine my love for surfing and art through the creation of my emoji collection,” Felicity said. “I’ve found that a lot of my social media followers are young people, mostly girls, who are interested in my artwork, so launching this collection of emojis is a really great way to give them the opportunity to own

some of my drawings and share them with their friends. “It’s also pretty cool that I’m the first ever surfer to have my own emoji collection. It’s not really something I thought I would ever say!” Felicity said.

As an advocate for environmental issues and conservation research, Felicity has also drawn on her passion for conservation as inspiration for the drawings she designed for her emoji collection. “As someone who’s been lucky enough to travel the world surfing, I’ve experienced first-hand the devastating impact the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife have on the world’s oceans. “I’m a passionate advocate for marine conservation, and I want to do what I can to give back to the environment that’s offered me so much with both my surfing and inspiration for my art,” she said. “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to showcase my first ever emoji collection at the first premier Australian event of the year. I hope to kick off 2015 with success both in and out of the water!” Felicity said. Taking on the business when her first child was only 12 weeks old, Alison has since created the incredibly successful modern day high tea party, which welcomes

fashion parade, providing a source celebration and encouragement and brought guests to tears and their feet in support. Alison has continually strived to provide the ultimate girls day out – but also a niche way for supporting brands to connect with their audience in a way that very few other events can offer. Only recently giving birth to a gorgeous baby girl, Alison is a constant inspiration, and although she admits it can be a struggle, she does manage that oftdiscussed juggle that mothers with careers face.
