The Procrastination Habit You’re probably thinking there are many reasons we procrastinate…and you’re right. But none of them make a difference if you really want to overcome this time management roadblock. It’s a problem you are familiar with because it begins in childhood and follows into adulthood. It shows up in your work environment interfering with your productivity and peace of mind. What does procrastination look like? Clutter on your desktop, over-stuffed filing cabinets, chaotic digital files, not working on your priorities and failing to make deadlines to name just a few. More stress, anxiety and frustration about what wasn’t done. Reduced efficiencies. Wasted time. Fewer productivity gains. Simply put, delaying decisions is a time management deal breaker when it comes to job performance, satisfaction and peace of mind.

What types of things do you procrastinate about? Most of us procrastinate to some degree about something. Even professional organizers. Years ago I began recognizing a specific area where I kept putting on the breaks. I started using a timer to get me to take an action within a certain period of time. It got me through the task and eventually the actions became a habit. Changing a negative habit to a positive one is the key. Take a minute to think about specific areas in your life where you might be delaying decisions. List steps that can help you work through that…and don’t forget to include some rewards along the way. Who can help? The support of family, friends and co-workers. Sometimes a coach or accountability partner. But it all starts with you making up your mind to change a habit. Begin now. Get moving. Because it’s all about your actions and not just your intentions. Be consistent and routinely seek to move things forward. After a while it will become second nature…and you’ll feel better about yourself and your outcomes.
