When Your Priorities Seem To Be…Last “The main thing is to remember that the main thing is the main thing.” Dr. Stephen Covey

Years ago clients would tell me they couldn’t identify their priorities. Now I hear them saying ‘I know what my priorities are…I just can’t get to them.’ But effectively organizing yourself and managing your time requires an investment in time. Time to identify both long and short-term goals, time to set-up workable systems and time to practice the processes that support these systems. This investment leads to the actions that help you identify and remain focused on your priorities. But of course during this same time you experience increased workloads, unexpected deadlines, interruptions, distractions and emergencies. Systems to manage your paper, time and space provide a framework to handle all the things you need to handle on a day-to-day basis. For many this is a formidable juggling act. But as master juggler Dan Thurmon says, ‘It is a pattern or system that allows us to handle more objects at the same time without dropping them.” Systems always have processes connected to them. But the processes need to be refined on an ongoing basis because managing yourself and your time is a dynamic state…not a static one. It means being clear on your goals and mentally revisiting your priorities several times a day. Systems are developed because of what you value. What you value lies at the heart of identifying and owning both your goals and your priorities. We make choices and decisions about our actions based on what’s important to us. Choices that impact our professional and personal lives as we seek more balance and greater satisfaction. When you routinely veer off the road from what’s important, you take a step backwards in achieving your hopes, dreams, aspirations and peace of mind. Organizing and time management system require an investment in planning. Remind yourself each chance you get about what matters most in your life and take the next action step towards getting there. Remember…thoughts lead to actions that develop into habits that build character which determines destiny. Be mindful of your priorities. Be conscious of your thoughts. And if you live with purpose, you live your dreams and potentially a much more peaceful – and productive – life. © 2001 Cynthia Kyriazis
