Your Organizing Style “Organizing is what you do before you do something so that when you do it it’s not all mixed up.” Winnie the Pooh

We all have a natural style of organizing our papers. Identifying your natural style of paper management helps you work towards eliminating those on-going feelings of stress and frustration when you look at your desktop. And developing a user-friendly system that supports your style is a key element in not only creating an organized workspace, but more importantly in maintaining one. In fact, I make it a standard practice of testing for this during my workshops. So…do you file or pile? Do you like storing your papers on top of your desk in trays, baskets or just plain piles? Do you have a preference for sticky notes and maybe some colorful file folders? Or are clearly labeled files and file cabinets more your style? Research conducted in the late 1980’s suggested that human beings exhibit brain hemisphere dominance in early childhood. Hemisphere seem to have distinct functions. But you actually use both sides of your brain in everything you do. In addition, hemisphere dominance directly impacts how you respond to new experiences. The more aware you are of your own style, the better positioned you are to use what you learn. Left-brain dominance. Do you tend to be analytical, methodical and more or less a linear thinker? Language resides in the left side of the brain, so you would be looking for a word on a folder when you go to grab it. Folders tend to be stored vertically on top of your desktop or in a file cabinet. Right-brain dominance. Do you tend to be a conceptual, big picture thinker. You tend to scan more than focus. If so, your style causes you to respond more to color or placement and probably file papers horizontally on top of your desk. Putting something inside a file cabinet could mean it is lost to you forever! Then there’s the rest of us. For those of you who don’t really identify with what I’ve outlined don’t worry. You are what I call ‘whole brained’. Sometimes things are stored vertically and other things are stored horizontally…and you like it that way. It works for you. Identifying your style will make it easier for you to improve your productivity. And improved productivity usually comes along with more and peace of mind. It’s worth it, isn’t it?!
