ARC A New Cultural Hub in Detroit SPRING 2016 SITE LOCATION: DOWNTOWN DETROIT INSTRUCTOR: KRISTY BALLIET INSPIRATION: EL LISSITZKY The illusionary effect of two or four “dancing towers” is generated by the movement of the viewers. In massing, the outline of the building changes as the viewer drives through the site; in plan, the geometry of the floor plate transforms from the bottom to the top. The building uses transparent material to allow the best view to downtown and translucent material between units to protect the residents’ privacy. By connecting the top and the bottom of the towers, it frames the downtown skyline, and also becomes the new skyline for Columbus.

Illusion in Geometry The geometry of floor plates transform from triangle at the bottom to quadrilateral at the top. In the site plan above, the triangular footprints show the lobby level of the towers and the openings of the ground level. The ground plan on the right illustrate the gym, restaurant and parking locations.

Tony Smith A Study of Tetrahedron and Octahedron FALL 2014 SITE LOCATION: CONCEPTUAL INSTRUCTOR: STEPHEN TURK INSPIRATION: TONY SMITH This project uses tetrahedron, octahedron, and/or cubes to design the following four projects: figuration, envelope loft, house for Smith family, and museum for Tony Smith’s sculptures. Starting with unfolding Smith’s sculpture, and use each project as a clue for the next project, eventually connect the four steps into one process.

Boundaryless “There is no outside.”tt SPRING 2015 SITE LOCATION: KENYON COLLEGE, OHIO INSTRUCTOR: ANDREW CRUSE INSPIRATION: DE STIJL What is the boundary between inside and outside? How to make a volume “boundaryless”? This project starts with breaking a regular box by shifting, removing and intersecting the planes. In addition, the planes are elevated and connected by various scales of frames that have been generated from the same modules.

What is Boundaryless?

Film Archive Square and Circles SUMMER 2013 SITE LOCATION: CAMBRIDGE, MA INSTRUCTOR: TAYLOR DOVER INSPIRATION: STOCKHOLM PUBLIC LIBRARY This project requires to design a film archive which includes outdoor and indoor theaters, administrative spaces, and various public spaces such as gallery, library, and shops; the site is located at a busy retail neighborhood with heavy traffic. The concept is by “pilling and lifting” the ground, to create a multi-level walkable roof top and to separate theaters and other public spaces in order to emphasize the theme of Film. This project was designed before the study of architecture. Drawings are done by pencil. Below is the designer’s rendition of Stockholm Public Library.

Glass Auto-Parking Tower The Mirror of Urban Development SUMMER 2015 SITE LOCATION: TIANJIN CHINA COMPETITION JURY: RIKEN YAMAMOTO TEAMMATE: YAO ZHENG INSPIRATION: SOCIAL ISSUE Glass is rarely used as floor plates because of its transparency and fragility. However, these qualities can help to visualize potential social problems. In Tianjin China, 2,600,000 vehicles run on the streets without having enough space or restriction for parking. The citizens are dissatisfied with the chaotic urban environment however the transportation policies cannot catch up with the rapid urban growth. In this proposal, the glass auto-parking tower tries to aware people the crisis of unbalanced urban development through its own transparency and fragility.

Chimera A Leisure Space FALL 2012 SITE LOCATION: CONCEPTUAL INSTRUCTOR: SANDHYA KOCHAR INSPIRATION: PAPER COLLAGE This project develops a leisure space which contains three pools, lounge area, and changing rooms. The concept of Chimera is to have a hybrid of large water environment, dense tall grass, and multiple movie screens within the pools. In geometry, the three types of chimeras illustrate as outside to be solid, inside to be fluid, and edge to be empty. This was the first design project. Drawings were done by pencil on vellum.
