Wooster Mulitmodal Project Transportation Title Plan 2016 Academic Projects

1

The Wooster Multimodal Transportation Plan consisted of designing a comprehensive multimodal transportation plan for the city of Wooster, Ohio, as the main project of a graphics class in the Master of City and Regional Planning Program at Ohio State. For this project, I studied the existing comprehensive plan and subplans commissioned by the City of Wooster, in addition to studying existing infrastructure and engineering in the city, to find the greatest need for planning. As mentioned in both the comprehensive plan for the city and the plan for the Downtown area, transportation, in particular involving pedestrians, bikes and public transportation was very much needed in regards to future planning. This planing process included creating graphics and GIS maps showing need for improvements in the city, creating public engagement materials, in addition to drafting text for the plan. In summary, the plan sets a bright future for transportation in Wooster, thanks to clear support of planning efforts by residents, businesses, organizations and elected officials.

Lima Vacant Parcel Reuse

Project Title

2015 Academic Projects

5

The Lima Vacant Land Reuse project in Lima, Ohio was a class project where groups of two were assigned small sites in various locations throughout the city limits. The site I was assigned was approximately 13.5 acres and was bordered by several main roads in Lima, in addition to the Ottawa River on the south end of the site. As this site was located near downtown and across the street from the city high school, it presented many opportunities for reuse and redevelopment. For this project, class members were assigned a criteria of what could be present on the site. The site I was assigned was zoned entirely for Class I Business Retail, but contained a mix of single-family and multi-family residential homes, light industrial and business sites. The final proposal consisted of utilizing the site for mainly residential purposes, with renovations of single family homes, and the construction of tiny houses and mixed use buildings. Because a significant portion of the site was located in the flood plain near the river, a large park and green space were also added in the site redevelopment plan.

Historical Survey of T&O Railroad Station 2015 Academic Projects

9

The T&O Railroad Station historical survey was completed as a group project for a History of Planning class in the Master of City and Regional Planning Program at The Ohio State University. The project entailed research, photography, and completing a paper on the history, architecture, and culture surrounding the presence of the railroad station.

Bonham Avenue Project Community Garden Title 2016 Research

community garden Columbus, Ohio | Joachim Bean

13

The Bonham Avenue Community Garden is a personal exploration of vacant land reuse in an urban area with little possibility for conventional redevelopment. The parcel is owned by the City of Columbus Land Bank, and is being licensed by me as a community garden. The parcel was previously occupied by a house which was demolished in 2013. The site of the community garden, located at 818 E. Bonham Ave. in Columbus, Ohio is approximately a tenth of an acre. The of the site is bordered by a used tire shop on the northern boundary, with E. Bonham Avenue and a gravel lot on the southern boundary of the site. Kingry Street is located on the eastern boundary of the site, with a single-family residential home on the western boundary of the site. The site is located approximately 0.1 miles east from Interstate 71, and is approximately two miles from the center of Downtown Columbus. It’s also located in close proximity to the Short North, The Ohio State University, and the Milo-Grogan area.

Urban Happiness Survey 2016 Research

17

The Urban Happiness Survey was a study completed under the direction of a faculty member in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University. This study asked the questions of “who, what and where makes you happy? These questions were asked and distributed through an online survey, providing a series of questions measuring demographics and various factors of happiness. To increase participation in this survey, the survey was promoted through a series of flyers I designed and posted in the Near East, Franklinton and Linden neighborhoods of Columbus. The research concluded that green spaces are crucial in promoting happiness in urban areas, while maintaining healthy relationships with others is critical to sustaining happiness in urban neighborhoods.

Richland County Planning Internship 2016 Professional Practice

21

In the summer of 2016, I began an internship at the Richland County Planning Commission in Mansfield, Ohio. This internship is focused on GIS mapping in the region. In the region, I am mainly working in the Village of Lucas, Ohio, mapping the entire city by capturing GPS coordinates, and creating GIS data for long range community planning and utility modernization efforts.

OSU Wexner Medical Center Signage and Wayfinding 2014 Professional Practice

23

Throughout my senior year as an undergraduate at The Ohio State University, I was employed by the OSU Wexner Medical Center, creating and updating signage and wayfinidng for patients, faculty, staff, students, and visitors of the OSU Wexner Medical Center. I completed the fire evuactions maps for all 21 levels of the James Cancer Hospital, updated and redesigned driving direction maps and sheets, in addition to designing and posting signs throughout the Wexner Medical Center.
