EDITOR’S NOTE BETTER FUTURE LIES IN TECHNOPRENEURIAL ACTIVITIES We are often unwilling or unable to react to change that builds gradually rather than suddenly. The changes in technology in our lifetime have been huge and impacted every part of our lives; including water, food, education, business, office, electricity, marketing, data storage, communication, cars, parking, travelling, foods, shopping, and banks etc.
BENITO MAMAILE
Technology is almost everywhere and in everything that is involved in our daily lives. Technology has changed our thinking, communication, habits, work life and social activities. Technology parks are a strategic tool to spill over knowledge and skills. The rise of technology parks around the world and especially in developing countries, has addressed concerns on the technopreneurial activity and its impact on developing locations and regions, especially in developing countries in Africa, where private and public sector are joining efforts to create a sustainable ecosystem for technology entrepreneurs. Hence, numbers of challenges are facing Africa, particularly the cross-cultural factors and the ICT infrastructure. In this edition I spent time with the strategian who is heading Southern Science and Technology Park in VUT Sebokeng Campus, South Africa. Executive Director, Dr. Joe Molete, the speaker, coach and strategist that has facilitated workshops and inspired more than 10 000 professionals in his career. He founded the Dr Joe High Performance Academy, which mentors leaders and entrepreneurs. His flagship programs include "Finding Your Sweet Spot" and "The High Impact Leader in the 4th Industrial Revolution" He shares his story with us and the vision of the science and technology park.
We also brought you the new monthly feature that will see us bringing you game changers in multiple industries, we are taking off with Itumeleng Matshego, MD and Co-founder of Legratron, the company that its day to day business focuses on tracking solutions.

Dr Joe Molete (PhD, MBA) – Inspiring Greatness as Speaker and a Coach. By Benito Mamaile
Dr Joe is motivational speaker, life coach and a workshop facilitator. As a passionate, persuasive and dynamic speaker with more than 15 years of speaking experience
It was an honor and privilege listening to you address our graduates. - Deputy Chef Justice and Advocate ED Moseneke, SC
D
r Joe plays a key role in motivating and coaching leaders, and believes that an authentic leader is central to successful enterprise. Dr Joe founded “Dr JoeInspiring Greatness” in 2013 as a platform to consolidate and share his skills with leaders and entrepreneurs. Dr Joe also has 20 year’s work experience in supporting technology entrepreneurs and researchers commercialise their ideas. He is currently leading the development of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Science Park where he implements a number of programs to support start-up companies so that they can transform the economy of South Africa. His workshops are inspiring, entertaining and informative, and he help professionals connect with their passions. He speaks on broad topics such as leadership, innovation and technology and spirituality. He is an accredited facilitator, assessor and moderator.
Q
How did you decide to do the work that you currently do?
Most of us connect with the work we are born to do through trial and error. I believe only a few people are lucky to have access to career advice and coaching from an early age. For me the journey was long and winded but yet fulfilling. I attempted a number of professions such as being a DJ, a farmer, medical doctor, scientist, regulatory professional, an entrepreneur and a coach.

Books transformed my life. They took me out of the village into the boardroom. Books are my best friends. Hang around them for a while and you will be transformed too. Dr. Joe Molete
Many of us go around looking for this “one thing” that we must do and we get frustrated if we do not find it; we may even begin to experience the feeling of inadequacy. It is noteworthy to realize that many people, the scatterbrains like me, find it difficult just to focus on that one thing, particularly when we do not even know what that one thing is. I also believe that many people who are able to find their one thing do so by connecting the dots looking backwards. When you look at successful people narrate their stories you will think that they are just blessed to be able to figure things out. I believe that in the quest of finding that one thing for most people, it has to be all about trial and error. You basically have to focus on what you are doing now and do it to the best of your ability as opposed to looking out of the window and hoping that something that you love is out there. Things will evolve on their own and you will finally connect with something will consume you.
Q
What consumes you now in all you do?
It is definitely helping other people as a coaching and a speaker. I believe that the ultimate work we are born to do is to encourage and uplift one another. Steven Covey in his book; The 8th Habit: from Effectiveness to Greatness, says “our role as leaders is to find our voice and then help others find their voice”. My coaching and speaking career integrate all of the 25 years of experiences which I have garnered throughout the years to make me more impactful. Like a Rubik’s cube, I have a number of facets and experiences that I integrate and use to my full advantage to offer the best possible services to the people I work with. During my workshops I simplify and integrate a wide range of topics ranging from leadership, science & technology, religion, music, and business. I live by the principle that integrating one’s portfolio of passions as well as focusing on continuous learning are the keys to being an effective and fulfilled person. I am passionate about helping professionals to live a life they love and build a career that supports it. This is the reason for my coaching philosophy which is: “Understand who you are, define what is important to you and be clear about the kind of life you want to live in order to be successful in your personal life and in the boardroom.”
Some kind of failure always occurs before success. Just because its not happening now, it doesn’t mean it will never will. Sometimes things have to go very wrong before they can be right
Dr. Joe Molete
Dr. Joe High Performance Academy
Q
What is your educational background and is it currently helping you?
My educational prowess which culminated to me spending 14 years at five different institutes of learning was very illuminating. The tutelage and knowledge I was able to be exposed to and as such amass along the way made it possible for me to learn a lot of things. This wealth of knowledge which I managed to have, has placed me in a position to be able to share as a speaker, coach and a director. My years of study were a roller coaster of events and emotions and included many transitions. They fluctuated from having no school fees to having plenty, from one village boarding school in Phiri-Kolobe to a university in Johannesburg called Wits (University of the Witwatersrand), from one country, South Africa, to spending 12 years in the USA. Education made me somebody and I am proud to disclose that I obtained all my tertiary schooling free. This feat was accomplishable thanks to those who awarded me scholarships and bursaries. For that reason, I intend to be an inspiration and to be a role model to those who have a passion to study but have limited financial resources. My message is that you too can be well educated if you are serious about what you want and lack of money should not be an obstacle.
IN SUMMARY, A LIST OF MY ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDES:
•
I completed matric in 1989 with a B aggregate including an A in Biology from Phiri-Kolobe High School in Sovenga, Limpopo, South Africa.
•
I graduated with BSc and BSc (Honors) degrees in Biochemistry in 1993 and 1994 respectively, from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.
•
I obtained a distinction in my MSc degree in Biology in 1996 from Howard University in Washington DC (USA).
•
I graduated with a PhD in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology in 2000 from The Pennsylvania State University in Pennsylvania (USA).
•
I obtained an MBA degree in 2007 from the University of Cape Town, South Africa’s Graduate School of Business.
•
I completed an Advanced Management Programme in 2009 at Harvard Business School in the USA.
•
Between 2013 and 2015, I completed various training programmes in African traditional healing, indigenous knowledge, and spirituality in South Africa.
•
I completed ETDP SETA certifications in facilitation, assessment and moderation in 2015.
My quest for knowledge never stops and I intend to continue studying in order to have a bigger knowledge basket from which to harvest and share with others through my books and presentations. I plan to enroll for a PhD in Psychology.
Dr Joe with Science Park Colleagues
Q
How did you end up at Vaal University of Technology Science Park?
I attempted to be an entrepreneur a few times and I failed and hence I am a faithful and humble employee of the VUT Science Park. I realised that not everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur. Before joining VUT I was a consultant helping organisations develop strategies as well as coaching leaders. I was looking to work with VUT because I knew that they wanted to develop their Science Park. When I approached VUT it just so happened that VUT advertised a position for an Executive Director of Technology Transfer and Innovation which I competed for. As part of my role I developed the strategy for the Science Park and we are currently raising resources to implement the strategy. It is such an honour to come to work everyday. We have about 100 talented employees and I enjoy learning from them everyday. The Science Park is a place where we work with various stakeholders from academia, industry and communities; the work here aligns with my own personal vision and values. I consider myself lucky in that I am able to align my work and personal vision to make a difference in others.
Dr Joe with 3D printed items
My corporate journey spans over 20 years of work experience in more than eight different science and technology organisations in two different countries, South Africa and the USA. I worked for The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), American Red Cross (ARC), International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), Baxter Healthcare, Cape Biotech, BioPAD and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). All the experience acquired over the years is in line with my work at VUT. 16TH EDITION – NOVEMBER 2018

“ I enjoy developing those gadgets with a team of creative scientists, protecting intellectual property, facilitating partnerships and finally taking the prototypes to the market place. My work experience has been mostly in the healthcare and biotechnology/pharmaceutical sectors. However, I have recently branched out to focus more on advanced manufacturing and enterprise development.” – Dr. Joe Molete, Executive Director, VUT Science Park
Q
What is the vision of the VUT Science Park?
Driving regional economic development requires a nexus for growth that acts as a seed and catalyses development within the region. The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has repositioned itself to support government initiatives through the establishment of the VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park (VUT Science Park) based in Sebokeng Campus.
In essence the Science Park drives the regional ecosystem that will enable different stakeholders to come together to work on innovative solutions to advance the region. The proposed growth model for this Vaal regional innovation ecosystem will focus on four key objectives that include:
• •
Maximizing land use and the development of a property-based science and technology park on 172 hectares of land owned by VUT. Enhancing research, development and prototyping through centralizing modern equipment so that it is easily accessed by enterprises and researchers with innovative ideas.
•
Developing and supporting new sustainable enterprises though facilitating seminars, training and incubating startups.
•
Establishing a networked learning organisation that will allow Science Park to hire and retain skilled talent as well as foster partnership with other entities.

Dr Joe Molete: Inspiring Greatness
Q
What is the vision of Dr Joe High Performance Academy
After working for a number of years in different companies, I came to realize that many professionals could elevate and move their careers to the next level through learning a few leadership principles. With this insight in mind, I established Dr Joe High Performance Academy (HPA) in 2013 as a platform to offer coaching and mentorship support to upcoming professionals. I get very excited talking about Dr Joe HPA because this is the realisation of my dream of making an impact in a big way on many people. However my definition of a big way is to support each person who is willing to change to the best of my ability. I support professionals in a number of ways:
•
Conducting seminar and sometimes in partnership with other entities or people.
•
Posting inspirational and educational content on my blog and in YouTube.
•
Coaching leaders to be integrated and live on purpose.
•
Incubating and supporting entrepreneurs build sustainable entities

INSPIRING PERSONAL GREATNESS
I reflected on the factors that held me hostage for many years, such as fear, procrastination, low sense of self, and I share tactics I used to transform my life.
Q
DANCING TO THE RHYTHMS OF LIFE
An inspirational short biography where I share insights on how I danced to the rhythms of life while impacting other people’s lives.
FINDING YOUR SWEET SPOT
Those that found their sweet spot are enlightened, happy, peaceful, productive and attract wealth. Here I share the seven elements on how to connect with your sweet spot
How do you know if you are making an impact in other people?
Well I do not know if I am making in impact. What matters to me is the fact that I grow and learn every day. I also know that I have more people wanting to meet me than I can accommodate and so that means that I am doing something that some people want to be part of. Some of my key achievements worth mentioning include:
• • • • • •
Raised and managed more than R500 million for various projects in the past 10 years; Secured various technologies from international partners to implement in South Africa; Managed organisational restructuring in various organisations to achieve optimal efficiencies; Assisted in setting up more than thirty start-ups and served on more than ten executive boards of start-ups; Facilitated workshops to more than ten thousand (10,000) professionals; and
I personally coached more than 10 professionals and some of them managed to transform their lives for the better.
As is always the case with every life endeavor, success comes at a price. I had many failures, and I do not exaggerate when I say that these failures exceed the number of successes I’ve enjoyed. Some of the most poignant disappointments I’ve experienced include: failing my first year at university; getting divorced; investing heavily in a venture without proper due diligence and losing almost R400K.

A “NO” well said in a second will save you a lifetime full of misery and regrets! The season for festivities is here again! People often travel and visit around unnecessarily; they spend their hard-earned money imprudently; they find themselves entering into unhealthy relationships; recklessness in general is the order of the season; negligence, immoral behavior, irresponsibly getting themselves indebted, etc. Most of which is as the result of not being able to say No!
Saying “NO” You’ve made the decision, after scientifically weighing the results of your cost/benefit analysis. Do honestly say “NO”. If you are serious about saying “NO” then stick to your guns.
We pray: “…lead us not into temptation…” so that we can lead ourselves and others into many temptations!
Tell the individual making the request that you would appreciate it if they respected your wishes, and ask them to refrain from pursuing it further. If you are comfortable expressing your “reasons why” then do so speaking from your personal perspective.
Here’s a small, precise and dynamic compass: a “NO” well said in a second will save you a lifetime full of misery and regrets!
Tips on how to say your “NO!”
Learn to say NO to misbehavior Learn to say NO to misleading friends Learn to say NO to misdirected courses
1. The apologetic NO
This article is written to coach you on ideas you can use to make sure you don’t find yourself doing something you’d very much prefer not to do.
Saying NO in a quiet, unassuming voice is like a hand shake that is floppy and limp.
Perhaps we should start off by asking this pertinent question:
By saying NO in a non-confident manner it will make you feel as though you have to convince the other person about your decision and the reasons why you have said it!
Is it your inclination to say yes, even though there’s a voice deep down saying no? Well, let’s raise the volume on that voice.
If you are going to say NO, you must say it in a way that means NO!
2. The angry NO
What possible reasons could there be for saying no?
This is at the other end of the spectrum in how to say NO. It is done in an aggressive manner and usually said with contempt. It is not an effective way to communicate your NO.
• • •
Here are a couple of examples:
It’s beyond your means? It’s beyond your comfort level? You have no interest?
Identify all the reasons you have for saying “no.” Identify which stem from a lack of confidence, versus a sincere disinterest in fulfilling the request. What would happen if you said yes? Perhaps: • • •
You would be considered a team player It would make your boss happy Your visibility with higher-ups would be improved
“NO. I’m not doing that rubbish. You’ve got to be joking aren’t you” “NO. I wouldn’t lower myself to do that piece of work” 3. The assertive NO This is the best way to say NO! In a firm, yet polite voice say: “No. I will not be able to do that for you” Also, if you want to say the reasons why, keep it short and sweet. “No. I will not be able to do that for you. I will be busy at that time”
It comes down to a simple cost/benefit reality:
4. Use effective body language
Would the discomfort involved in saying yes outweigh the benefits of possibly going along with the request?
When saying NO remember the power of non-verbal communications. Look the person in the eye when you say the NO. Shake your head at the same time as saying NO. Stand up tall.
Or, do the benefits outweigh your temporary discomforts? The role of guilt Saying “no” is hard for many of us. Guilt often comes into play. Whether this guilt has its foundation in religion, a proper upbringing, or a worldview that simply says “it’s not nice to say no”, we often recognize it and make decisions we’d rather not be making, based on it. 16TH EDITION – NOVEMBER 2018
Use a firm tone in your voice. 5. When all is said and done Don’t forget that when anyone asks a question of you, you are perfectly OK to say, “Can I think about that and get back to you” No-one should be pressurized into giving an immediate answer, even if the delay is only a couple of minutes. It will give you some time to think it through and to gather your thoughts. PAGE 15

YOUR NETASSET SCORE CARD By Morgen Moyo “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” Maria Robinson The year is about to come to a close and over the past months I have covered a number of issues relating to money. The question arises as to how you have related to money and more so how have you done financially during the year up to now. Some among us are currently waiting for their examination results. In this column it is also time for your financial score card. I know that a lot of people do not like completing forms. I do hope that you will however spend a few minutes of your time to complete this score card to reveal the state of your financial health. There is a saying about a picture telling a thousand words. This may not be a picture but I can assure you that this exercise will assist you in a number of ways among which are the following; • • • • • •

It is possible that you may discover that your liabilities are pulling you down. This must not discourage you but instead face up to it and find strategies to start reducing or clearing some of your debts. Our team has a long standing and proven track record within the IT and electronics space. Our in-depth knowledge and experience enables us to offer innovative, robust and superior solutions. We thrive on the challenges that our customers are faced with whereby they look to us in coming up with tracking solutions specific to their problems. Because we built, install, maintain all of our solutions including our monitoring platform, this allows us to be lean and enables us to control the value chain thereby positioning ourselves within a specific market. Legratron’s customers have challenges which are specific to them, meaning that their solutions will be unique as we do proper business analysis prior to us proposing a working solution. This means it is essential to the business to offer customizable solutions that are cost effective. Controlling and maintaining our solutions is one way of doing this, but there are other factors that the business considers. Our solutions enable our clients to reap the full benefits of asset tracking and monitoring. Some of the solutions features include but not limited to, positioning reports, history trip reports, antitempering, anti-movement, zoning of assets etc. We also provide asset utilization reports and monitoring, which enables our clients to know if their assets are utilized to full capacity whereby in most cases this knowledge would not be readily available to managers.
In terms of the technical specifications our solutions are able to perform optimally under various conditions, from mining and construction conditions with variable temperature conditions. We also provide solutions to chemical industries where conditions are not idea for most electronics tracking solution. For example, one of our clients operates in a radio action environment, meaning that Legratron had to build a solution which required intense environmental tests prior to its implementation. One of Legratron’s strength is our ability to have variable cost model. This enables Legratron to cater to vast markets that are yearning for our asset tracking solution. Our focus is value for money and not necessarily price, meaning that our solution might not be the most cost effective in the market however a focus on service coupled with peace of mind and convenience means that our customers are willing to pay a premium if the offering is good for their business. Our competitive edge is in us understanding what works in this environment. Not every solution is for everyone. We spend a huge amount of time and resources in RnD. This enables us to implement solutions that have been thoroughly tested as we understand that the biggest burden is time, our customers never have enough of it, meaning that if a solution is unreliable or has technical issues, our customers will essentially be losing time and revenue. Our CSI Program “Little Feet” program is focused on donating school shoes annually to school kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. This speaks volumes of what we at Legratron stand for. So if you’d like know where your assets are and how they are being used or abused Legratron asset tracking solutions will help you achieve this.

In basic terms, Copyright is the right to prevent others from copying, or from using for commercial gain, that which belongs to you.
Yes, the Copyright Act 98 of 1978.
Copyright can be described as the statutory right which vests in the creator of an original work, recognised by the Copyright Act. The law of copyright currently protects the following categories of works literary, artistic and musical works, sound recordings, cinematographic films, computer programmes, radio and television broadcasts, satellite transmissions and published editions.
No, there is “no copyright in ideas”. The law cannot protect something as ephemeral and sometimes fleeting as an idea. However, Copyright protects the expression of an idea (in tangible format).
The categories of persons who are afforded copyright protection are defined in the Act and include foreign persons and incorporated bodies from member states of the Berne Convention. Copyright vests, in the original creator or copyright owner of a work, the right to control the use of his or her work by third parties and essentially prohibit the unauthorised reproduction or publication thereof, or the making of an adaptation of the work.
Copyright, unlike patent, design and trade mark rights is not protected by way of registration at a central registry – except in the case of cinematograph films (not compulsory but recommended). There are no prescribed formalities for the acquisition of copyright, as it vests automatically in the original creator. Copyright arises as you express your ideas on the page. Thus, your work is automatically protected. It is important to note that if the work created by you is copied, it would be possible for you to institute legal action against the perpetrator, however, the onus of proof would rest on you to prove that you are the owner of copyright.
• In the published edition or typographical arrangement on the page. Copyright in the published edition belongs to the publisher. Copyright in the published edition lasts for 50 years from date of publication. Even when copyright in the literary work has expired, copyright in the published edition may still subsist.
When Copyright expires, the work falls into the public domain, and may be freely used and exploited by anyone.
Intellectual property is a product of the intellect, or mind. Intellectual Property is a generic term used to refer collectively to intangible products such as patents, trademarks, copyright and designs are the four forms of intellectual property for example, you cannot copyright the name of a product but you can establish a trade mark in a product name. Whereas Copyright is the right to protect products of the intellect or mind from unauthorized usage.
Only the copyright owner may copy the work or authorise a third party to reproduce it in any manner or form; publish it; perform it in public; broadcast it; transmit it in a diffusion service; or adapt it. Any third party who performs any of these actions in respect of the work – without permission from the copyright owner – has infringed copyright.
In accordance with the Copyright Act, Copyright is not infringed by any fair dealing with a literary work for the purposes of the personal or private use of the work by the person making the copy. What is deemed to be ‘fair’ in any given situation will depend on the circumstances of that situation. The test for fair dealing is qualitative as well as quantitative.
Two separate but interlinked copyrights exist: • In respect of literary work, Copyright in the work usually belongs to the author (unless the author has assigned the Copyright to the publisher). In South Africa, the duration of copyright exists during the lifetime of the author, copyright exists for a further fifty years from the end of the year in which the author dies.

SAY HELLO TO THE SWOOPY NEW MERCEDES-BENZ CLS!
By Ryan Bubear Ryan has spent most of his career in online media, writing about everything from sport to politics and other forms of crime. But his true passion – reignited by a 1971 Austin Mini Mk3 still tucked lifeless in a dark corner of his garage – is of the automotive variety.

fter multiple teasers and the obligatory “online leak”, the new Mercedes-Benz CLS has finally been officially revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The Stuttgart-based automaker says this third-generation CLS is the first to feature its “new design idiom”, which is characterized by “clear contours and reduced lines”. But, thanks to its general shape, it clearly also stays true to the two generations that came before it. As with the E-Class on which it is based, the new CLS features plenty of technology handed down from the flagship S-Class, particularly when it comes to driving assistance systems. A new range of engines, comprising in-line six-cylinder and in-line four-cylinder units in diesel and petrol flavors, will be offered in the sleek four-door sedan. Initially, just a trio of 3,0-litre six-cylinder mills will be offered, with each sending their oomph to all four wheels. At launch, the line-up will thus kick off with the CLS 350d 4Matic, which possesses 210 kW and 600 N.m and is capable of a claimed 0100 km/h time of 5,7 seconds. The CLS 400d 4Matic, meanwhile, ups peak outputs to 250 kW and 700 N.m, which in turn cuts the claimed sprint time to 5,0 seconds. Lastly, the petrol-powered, electrified (with an integrated starter/generator and a 48-volt onboard electrical system) CLS 450 4Matic churns out 270 kW and 500 N.m, with an additional 16 kW and 250 N.m available via the mild hybrid system for “short periods”. This derivative sees off the obligatory sprint to three figures in a claimed 4,8 seconds. Inside, you’ll find illuminated air vents and an optional high-resolution widescreen cockpit display, featuring two 12,3-inch screens arranged beneath a shared, continuous glass cover. Mercedes says the seats were designed exclusively for the CLS, with the outer perches in the rear (the CLS is now a fiveseater, thanks to the addition of a small centre seat in the rear) bearing the same appearance as those in the front. Luggage capacity is a claimed 520 litres. The new CLS features a four-link front and a five-link rear suspension setup. Steel “comfort” suspension ships standard, while continuously adjustable damping is optional, as is air suspension. As we’ve come to expect from Mercedes-Benz, a feature-packed Edition 1 model (which you see pictured in the gallery above) will be available for around one year after the market launch.
