OCTOBER 2017
The leader of the session have highlighted that it is expected that entrepreneurship will, in light of the above, contribute to growth and employment creation in advanced, emerging and least developed economies alike. This is a reasonable expectation – Our featured entrepreneur on this month’s edition Malethola Matube shares the journey about her 30 years of experience and expertise as an entrepreneur and business woman, 20 years in large corporates and ICT, as well as 12 years in golf, accelerating upcoming and growing entrepreneurs. Read more about her on page 5 to 7. 3 ENTREPRENEURIAL ASPECTS THAT CONTRIBUTES IN DEVELOPING OUR LOCAL ECONOMY. 1. Wealth Creation and Sharing: By establishing the business entity, entrepreneurs invest their own resources and attract capital (in the form of debt, equity, etc.) from investors, lenders and the public. This mobilizes public wealth and allows people to benefit from the success of entrepreneurs and growing businesses. This kind of pooled capital that results in wealth creation and distribution is one of the basic imperatives and goals of economic. To support what I have emphasized, Morgen Moyo is highlighting more about knowledge as the new capital on page 13 & 14. 2. Create Jobs: Entrepreneurs are by nature and definition job creators, as opposed to job seekers. The simple translation is that when you become an entrepreneur, there is one less job seeker in the economy, and then you provide employment for multiple other job seekers. This kind of job creation by new and existing businesses is again is one of the basic goals of economic development.
ENTREPRENEURS ARE THE BACKBONE OF A DEVELOPING ECONOMY Greetings and welcome to our 3rd Edition I have recently attended an Entrepreneurship Seminar at Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park in Vaal, South of Johannesburg. Being part of the session made me realize that, indeed entrepreneurs are the backbone of our local economy. Recognizing the incredible positive impact entrepreneurs can have.
3. Standard of Living: Increase in the standard of living of people in a community is yet another key goal of economic development. Entrepreneurs again play a key role in increasing the standard of living in a community. They do this not just by creating jobs, but also by developing and adopting innovations that lead to improvements in the quality of life of their employees, customers, and other stakeholders in the community. So, there is a very important role for entrepreneurs to spark economic development by starting new businesses, creating jobs, and contributing to improvement in various key goals such as GDP, better standard of living, skills development and community development. Jacques Loots is giving us the light on which type of a business can be suitable in legal perspective on page 17. Enjoy the read. Benito Mamaile Chief Editor

featured CONVERSATION WITH
By Benito Mamaile
Malethola Matube is an ICT professional with twenty years’ experience. An avid golfer for twelve years and an athlete since child hood. She uses golf and ICT to enable businesses to grow and achieve sustainability; women and children in disadvantaged areas to prosper and individuals to achieve personal mastery. A Christian - She believes that all her achievements are through God's Grace, her praying mother and solid faith. She is a Senior Executive: Sales & Marketing and Board Member at Intellectual Media, Founder of Iketsetse Bo Ka Moso Trading and Founder of Progressive Women In Golf non-profit organisation. She is still studying in pursuit of MSc (Master in Science): Marketing Management and PGA (Professional Golf Association) qualification. Born in Sebokeng in the Vaal, she grew up in Orange Farm, an informal settlement in Johannesburg. She was brought up by her mother with her two siblings in a one room shack. As her mother was full time employed and operating her own clothing designing and manufacturing business, she was forced into early childhood parenting at the age of twelve. The little that her mother made as income, she invested towards their education although it was not enough. Malethola was forced into being entrepreneur at a very tender age selling various consumables to assist her mother. At the age of seventeen Malethola travelled by train from Vereeniging to Johannesburg to look for a job on the same day that she wrote her last matric exam paper at General Smuts High School. She wanted to secure funding for her tertiary education. She was employed as a sales lady at Fashion Corner, a clothing shop, on the same day. Six months later she had managed to save enough to see herself through tertiary. She enrolled for a Diploma in Press Journalism at Campus College then moved on to study a Secretarial Diploma at Keyboards Secretarial College to ensure quicker employment to deal with the financial challenges at home. Her mother lost her fulltime job which was bringing very little but stable income for them to survive. She was now even more pressured to be employed. By Grace, just after her mother lost her full-time employment, Malethola Matube was employed by Vodacom at the tender age of 20 as a Customer Care Official, an opportunity that transformed her and her family. She managed to work full time, study Software Engineering part time at National Institution of Information Technology (NIIT) and venture into a solid business. Poverty was history. In 2004 Eddie Makeketlane, a golf fanatic and one of the most successful Community Telephone Operators, businessman and entrepreneur introduced golf to Malethola. When she completed her diploma in Software Engineering she enrolled for the Management Advanced Program (MAP) at Wits Business School. Malethola discovered the depth of golf and it's benefits and she developed a passion for it. To pursue her newly found passion for golf, upon completion of MAP she enrolled at the Wits Golf Academy. Her knowledge with regards to the synergy between golf and business was advanced. In a short space of time Malethola’s passion grew from just wanting to play the game to identifying the gaps and creating solutions that will inspire more people, specifically women and children to play golf and pursue influential roles within the golf industry. This process led her to identifying a major gap in products and services that would appeal to women and children on and off the golf course.

MONEY MATTERS
By Morgen Moyo
“The only true voyage would be not to travel through a hundred different lands with the same pair of eyes, but to see the same land through a hundred different pairs of eyes.” Marcel Proust When we talk about investing or money management the four letter word that’s likely to hit you is RISK. I am no risk management expert but a few things started playing up in my mind. From an early age, we start being drilled around these sayings:
Don’t play with fire Don’t run when crossing the road Don’t jack the car without pulling the hand brake and placing ‘bricks’ by the wheels! Go to school, learn and pass
These are life lessons and if you look carefully it’s all about trying to manage risks. By the time we start crossing the road, one is aware of the dangers. These kinds of lessons run through all facets of our lives. We just never realize at the time that they are risk management lessons. Do you remember the one about not putting all your eggs in one basket? In the true sense this has nothing to do with eggs, would you really worry about eggs in this day and age. But in the world of money management, portfolio management and investments, there is great wisdom there. Sadly, a lot of people make money decisions based on what they read in newspapers or hear over the radio and the like.
As always, in my writings, I strongly advise my readers to approach a registered Financial Planner or Advisor to seek expert assistance before making any investing decisions. This however still does not give you the ticket in avoiding the acquisition of knowledge about money management and investments. Read books, attend seminars, place yourself on mailing lists and be in the know, you owe this to yourself and your loved ones. The do-it-yourself concept without adequate knowledge can be very costly in the end and recipe for financial disaster. Hot Sales Pitches “Knowledge is the new money.” Robert Kiyosaki The following are some of the headlines we all get exposed to on a daily basis; • • • • • • •
Make money through Trading Forex Binary Options Everyone is talking about ETFs, don’t get left behind The tiny investment that made me huge The simplest fastest way South Africans make profits The stock market millions Make a fortune through property
This is just a tip of the thousands of headlines screaming for attention on a daily basis. And the question is, ‘Is there truth in these articles?’ Do you discard the information or do you follow it up? My take is that a lot of people lose their hard-earned money due to lack of adequate knowledge about the instruments being taunted and not necessarily that the instrument itself is a loss maker. Suffice to acknowledge that there are thousands of scams out there. But I am talking about legitimate asset classes.

MONEY MATTERS
JSE Demo Account
The JSE has a facility where you can register for a free demo account. Participants test their trading skills through a simulated trading programme where performance is tracked and measured. You can use this virtual account to trade ‘paper’ money for you to get the hang of stock market trading using live data. But again it is not about just picking a share because you heard or read an article in the newspaper and thus you think it is a good buy. There is a lot involved before taking such decisions. There are other risks that you need to be aware of such as what industries have you invested in. What would be the point in holding say five mining stocks and that industry goes into a tail spin? Your whole portfolio would be wiped out in one clean sweep. And again, the point I really want to get across is the need for you to seek knowledge and to lessen your financial risks.
Property as an Asset Class “If you are always learning you can never lose. Keep this as your only rule for the day and the world will be yours for taking.” Warren Buffett I have seen people jumping onto property investments with the hope of making loads of money only to discover that they bought into a wrong area. And yet it previous can be said page that property is one of the trusted continued from investment vehicles. Insurance companies and Pension funds are big players in this sector. Again, questions arise as to what type of properties and in which areas should one buy to attain success in this sector. Your success when it comes to investing has very little to do with which asset class you opt for but rather your knowledge regarding that asset class. Your failure to appreciate this fact will cause you to fail when it comes to investing. The Stock Market “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” Benjamin Franklin It is true that there are people who have made envious amounts through investing on equities. The stock market is the playground for the rich and fund managers. These are people who have the knowledge, experience and exposure to this kind of investment vehicle.
Crypto Currencies I have been talking about this to a few of my friends and I can tell you that a lot of people are wondering what on earth is going on. Suffice to say that the monetary authorities are busy at work investigating all the implications before allowing people to use them as an accepted form of payment. I equally have on good authority that one of the leading retail chains has tested their systems and now ready to accept some of these currencies.
by Morgen Moyo
Is it not time for you to research to establish facts with the upcoming markets and profit from them? Conclusion Whatever you are doing now is as a result of your educational background and that has taken you this far. Continue to invest in yourself and learn more about those investment vehicles that you believe are capable of taking you into the future. Do not jump onto bandwagons just because you heard someone saying there is money to be made in such and such a scheme. Find relevant books to read, gather more information and seek out knowledge. Within the next few months, you will discover a new you, which will help you make informed investment decisions. Till next time. Resources Become Your Own Stockbroker: Jacques Magliolo
Questions such as which shares should one buy and why? When is it the right time to buy or to sell the shares? Do you understand the science to trading / investing in shares? Do you buy blue chip companies, mid caps or penny shares? These are just but a few questions that you need to be able to answer otherwise your investment decisions will just be as good as taking shots in the dark. Somewhere in your investment world you will discover that the stock market is one of the areas where you can truly grow your capital. But be warned that others have lost all their capital in the same market. Out of all the things written in this article, the one thing you can take is the need to seek knowledge first. In this regard you will discover that there are ‘tools’ that you need know about to aid you in decision making as you enter or exit trading or investing positions. The good thing is that you too can learn and apply these to increase your success rate.
Fast Forward Your Retirement Through Property: Jason Lee https://virtualtradinggame.jse.co.za/VTG/Account/Register
“You must not avoid risk, but seek to manage it. By so doing you will discover greater returns”.
A lot of people however dread this market and opt to invest in Unit trusts or place their funds in a fixed deposit account. For the savers at some point they will discover a new word which is inflation and get very upset discovering that their money will not take them far enough.

LEGAL
By Jacques Loots Loots Attorneys
An Admitted Attorney
Research by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor shows that Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises in South Africa contribute about 45% of the gross domestic profit in South Africa and employs 50% of the private sector workforce making it a key player in the future of the South African economy. The majority of the SMME’s in South Africa however only survives a period of 5 years in business and some of the failures can be attributed to the failure to ensure that the basics are in place when opening its doors. Here are some of the basics that you need to consider before opening your own SMME: THE STRUCTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS
As with a building, if the foundation is not secure the partnership will soon start to show cracks and may eventually topple over resulting in financial losses for all involved and irreparable damage to relationships. Close Corporations
•
Although no new Close Corporations are registerable in South Africa existing Close Corporations can still continue and in the event of purchasing an existing company such CC can continue to operate as a Close Corporation.
•
Close Corporations are a separate legal entity and protects the members from liability for the debt of the company, likewise the company and its assets is also protected in the event that one of the members encounter problems with the personal finances.
•
The Close Corporation can have 1-10 members and it is therefor also important that the members enter into an agreement stipulating the duties and responsibilities of the members as well as the general management of the CC and running of the CC on a day to day basis. Dispute resolution must also be discussed in order to ensure that there is a way to efficiently resolve disputes in order to prevent the dispute disrupting business operations.
When registering or opening your business you need to consider the format of your business. The following options are available: Sole Proprietary •
This is ideal for businesses who are service driven and not asset driven and where the owner will be the sole employee.
•
The income derived from a sole proprietorship derived directly to the owner which means that there are no statutory returns applicable to this form of business. Only basic legal and tax requirements need to be met making this a cost effective way of starting your own business.
•
The disadvantage herewith is however that the Sole Proprietorship is not a separate legal entity and the owner can be held liable for business debts. A further disadvantage is that there is no longevity as the business dies with its owner.
Companies •
Companies also form a separate legal entity and directors are protected from personal liability. The sale of business shares are easy and directors can sell and transfer their shares easily.
•
Companies need to submit an annual audit report which unfortunately increases the business expenses of the company.
•
The shareholders of the company need to enter into a shareholders agreement to stipulate the duties and responsibilities of the shareholders as well as general management, dispute resolution, remuneration and profitsharing and the day to day management of the company.
Partnership •
This is ideal for scenarios where there are 2-20 partners that can share skills, resources, skills, liability and responsibility.
•
The partnership agreement is of cardinal interest herein as it will formalize the contribution of the partners and stipulate sharing of responsibility, profit share, resolution of disputes, and procedure in event of death of a partner, changes to partnership or the dissolution thereof.
•
The partnership agreement is therefore of the utmost importance and it is crucial that the partners seek legal advice for the drafting of this document as it is the foundation where upon the partnership must be built.

COACHING
Positively Perceive “Failure”
as Feedback
By Isaac Ndhlebe
And confidently learn from your mistakes
A NEW LOOK AT “FAILURE.” Learn why you should look forward to it, and how it can help you ultimately get to where you want to go.
“THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FAILURE” When you read the quote above, what’s your reaction? Do you think it’s untrue? Silly half-empty-glass stuff? Is it an “out of step with reality” kind of an attitude? What if I told you that only YOU have the power to decide whether or not something is indeed, a “failure?”
In fact, there are some individuals—highly successful people—who believe the very word “failure” has no place in our vocabulary. Let’s talk about why.
“OPPOSITE DAY” GAME As a child, you may probably have played that game “opposite day.” This is how it was played: You’d play practical jokes on your family and friends and release some passive aggression in the process of claiming “opposite day.” It was great—you could call the cutest girl in the class “ugly,” and then take it all back by simply exclaiming “opposite day!”
Coach & Mentor
“FAILURE” IS FEEDBACK “Failure” can simply be a great way to get us to pause in the midst of our processes, and get some critical information to indicate that we may need to change direction, try something new, continue our learning, or shift our focus. Imagine what would happen if we didn’t get that feedback, and continued endlessly along the wrong path, toward the wrong goal, or without ever learning a new approach? That’s really some frightening thought! Failure then, can really be seen as positive feedback—information that gets us back on the right track! For, without it, we would surely be lost. The key then, is to identify it quickly, and change direction, try something new, or shift our focus. A proverb says that a wise man changes his mind – for constructive life changes of course!
HERE ARE SOME TIPS:
Always have a clear idea of where you want to go and continue to do some re-evaluations as you move forward.
Identify specific milestones or markers along the way, to let you know you’re on the right track and celebrate each blessing or success.
If something doesn’t appear to be working, or working fast enough, don’t hesitate to try something new in pursuit of the set goals.
Continually learn - from others with whom you work; seek out experts; find others who may have traveled down a similar road before.
But, the end result is the same; you still would have acknowledged her cuteness. Well, let’s play the game.
WHAT IF TODAY, FAILURE REALLY MEANS SUCCESS? How can you acknowledge your success, even as you utter the word “failure”? Well, you can point out: a)
everything that was learned in the process of getting to where you are now - surely not everything goes to the scrap heap
b)
that simply being able to recognize everything hadn’t gone according to plan, or achieved the desired outcome (i.e. “failed”), is in itself a positive outcome.
c)
that the specific path you took, clearly wasn’t the right one and so it has successfully been eliminated and will not be repeated and that you’ll know to do things differently in the future.
d)
that the experience has enabled you to grow one way or the other.
Someone once wrote: “You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call “failure” is not the falling down, but the staying down” “You NEVER fail until you stop trying” “If you are not making any mistakes, you’re not really doing anything with your life”

New models NEW CARBON VERSIONS OF ITS RS4 AVANT AND RS5 COUPÉ By Ryan Bubear
Audi Sport has taken the wraps off new Carbon Edition versions of its RS4 Avant and RS5 Coupé, each boasting lashings of carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP). The Ingolstadt automaker describes the new variants as “special editions”, but points out that they “will not be production limited”. No word on availability outside of Europe at this point. The additions include a “Carbon Matt Aluminium Styling Pack” that adds a CFRP finish for the front spoiler (as well as the rear in the case of the RS5), sill extensions, a diffuser insert and interior inlays, along with CFRP door mirror housings. The RS5 furthermore gains an exposed CFRP roof, which cuts the vehicle’s weight by an additional 3 kg.
Audi Reveals Lighter Carbon Edition RS4, RS5 Variants
Matt aluminium finishes for the front grille and window surrounds are also included, along with privacy glass and fresh 20-inch alloy wheels finished in anthracite matt black (complete with the obligatory red brake callipers). Audi says these special one-piece milled alloys allow a weight saving of 2 kg per wheel. In total, the changes contribute to weight loss of up to 80 kg for the RS4 Avant and 60 kg for the RS5 Coupé. While the 2,9-litre biturbo TFSI engine itself is unchanged (still sending a considerable 331 kW and 600 N.m to all four corners), it does gain a CFRP engine cover and an upgraded RS sport exhaust system, which Audi promises “amplifies its soundtrack”.
Carbon Edition models furthermore feature an upgrade to RS matrix LED headlamps capable of automatically dipping or deactivating individual lighting diodes. These units include dynamic front indicators to complement the standard dynamic rear installations. Source: http://www.carmag.co.za/author/ryanbubear/

Amashova Durban Classic
The Amashova is one of the safest but toughest and most grueling cycling events, known as the Amashova Durban Classic in South Africa.
Dubbed the safest cycle race in KwaZulu Natal, the 25th annual Amashova National Cycle Classic was held in October 2009, for the first time. The 106km road race follows a similar route to that of the Comrades Marathon, although a shorter 38km fun ride is also on offer. Held during rather humid conditions, although not Durban’s stickiest time of year, the race starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends in Durban at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The MTN Amashova 106km race from the Pietermaritzburg City Hall to Durban. Alternatively, early birds on the lookout for a sporting chance to enjoy the outdoors and KZN’s beautiful spring weather can sign up for the Sunday Tribune Amashova family fun ride. Starting at Hillcrest High School at 05h45 it covers 38km to finish at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
