Darren Appleton Wins The 2012 Champion of Champions “This is the toughest tournament in the world,” said an elated Darren Appleton moments after capturing the 2012 International Challenge of Champions title. The pressure packed $25,000 winnertake-all event was held at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, October 23. Appleton, from England, defeated Shane Van Boening of the USA by a thumping score of 5-1 and 5-1 in the final match, and was crowned “Champion of Champions” for an incredible second year in a row. The two semifinals and the Championship match were taped by ESPN for telecast beginning December 9. “You have to be on your game the entire tournament,” said Appleton. “There’s no margin for error when every player is a champion. One shot missed and you can lose $25,000! The pressure is just incredible. Indeed, of the four international champions in the event, Appleton had to fight to defend his title as the reigning “Champion of Champions.” The Semifinal and Final matches require the winner to win two sets, race to 5 games each set. In the event of a tie, the pressure becomes intense with a one game sudden death shootout. Appleton played US Open 10-Ball Champion Dennis Orcollo in a semifinal match, which went into sudden death. Orcollo won the first set 5-2 and Appleton surged back to take the second set 53. He then won the lag for the one game sudden death, and after trading safeties, he ran the table to close out the match. Van Boening, the 2012 Players 9-Ball Champion, defeated the Jung Lin Chang of Taiwan, the 2012 World 8-Ball Champion, in the other semifinal that also went into sudden death. Chang took the first set by an impressive 5-0, but Van Boening found his stroke to claim the second set 5-3. After battling back and forth in sudden death, Van Boening ran 6 PQB December/January

out to emerge the winner. Appleton’s final match against Van Boening, featured flawless run outs and exquisite safety play on Appleton’s part. Van Boening was unable to get out on his break four times in the two sets, which left him trailing far behind in a lopsided contest. Known for his pinpoint accuracy, Appleton handily won the Championship match in unstoppable form with scores of 5-1 and 5-1. The crowd gave Appleton a standing ovation when he won the final match. He raised his arms in victory and then accepted the highest single purse in international winner-take-all tournaments. The trophy and the check were presented by Mohegan Sun and Diamond Billiard Tables. The presentation brought another round of cheers from the audience. The 2012 event was the 22nd annual International Challenge of Champions and the sixteenth to be held at Mohegan Sun. Tom Cantone, Vice President Sports & Entertainment for Mohegan Sun, was delighted with the support displayed by the turnout of pool fans. “The crowds were even more than we anticipated, and the players were amazing,” he said. “We are extremely pleased.”

In addition to the fine tournament site at Mohegan Sun, the event was sponsored by Diamond Billiard Tables, Aramith Tournament Billiard Balls, Simonis Cloth, Mueller Recreational Products, Executive Billiards Delta-13 Rack, OB Cues, BCA Pool League and Silver Cup Chalk. The WPA sanctioned event was produced by Billiards International.

“I feel like I just won an Olympic Gold Medal,” said an elated Ga Young Kim moments after capturing the 2012 Mohegan Sun International Tournament of Champions title for an astounding third year and was crowned the Women’s “Champion of Champions.” The two semifinals and the Championship match were taped for broadcast by ESPN beginning December 23.

“We may look cool out there, but the pressure is overwhelming,” said Kim “You have to play your heart out when every player is champions. One or two errors and you lose $20,000! Your emotions are just wild during the game.” Nonetheless, of the four international champions in the event, Kim proved to be an irresistible force on her way to the title. She defeated Austria’s Jasmin Ouschan, the Masters 9-Ball Champion, in the semifinal round 4-1 and 4-2. The semi and final matches required a player to win two sets, race to four games each set. In the event of a tie, the pressure becomes brutal with a one game sudden

the first set by a score of 4-2 and Fisher rallied back to capture the second set 4-3. In sudden death, Fisher was on her way to victory when she failed to pocket the five ball and Corr then quickly cleaned the table for the win. Kim’s final match against Corr was neck-and-neck, featuring precise run outs and fierce safety play. Kim looked unbeatable as she easily claimed the first set by 4-2. But Corr then rocketed back in the second set with a drubbing score of 4-0. Known for her uncanny shotmaking, Kim won the lag for the one game sudden death, and following an exchange of safeties, she ran the table.

The crowd gave Kim a standing ovation when he won the final match. She raised her cue in victory and then accepted the highest single purse in Women’s international winner-take-all tournaments. The trophy and the check were presented by Mohegan Sun and Diamond Billiard Tables. The 2012 event was the 15th annual International Tournament of Champions. Team Europe Downs Team USA in World Cup of Trick Shots

The World Cup of Tricks Shots was held October 25 at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. Team Europe claimed the title over Team USA in the only international team competition in the sport of Trick Shots. The prize purse was $30,000 for the event and Gold Medals to the winning team. The two semifinals and the Championship match will be broadcast by ESPN on January 6. Captain Nick Nikolaidis led Team Europe to victory and the Gold Medal. Other Team Europe members who were awarded the Gold Medal were Luke Szywala, Gabriel Visiou, and Florian Kohler. Silver Medalists from Team USA included Captain Andy Segal, Bruce Barthelette, Jamey Gray, and Mike Dechaine. The players on Team Europe displayed their brilliance to emerge as the top trick shot artists in the world. The Championship match was poetry on green felt, with Team Europe defeating Team USA by a hairline score of 21-20 to take the Gold Medals. Team USA, whose members were otherwise on their game, claimed Silver Medals and second prize. In the first semifinal, Team Europe players Visiou and Kohler prevailed over Team USA members Segal and Gray. The other semifinal saw Team USA artists Barthelette and Dechaine slip past Team Europe players Nikolaidis and Szywala in a tight match. The winning team in each semifinal carried a 1 point bonus forward into the final match. The Championship match went down to the wire, with Team Europe claiming the Gold Medals by the narrow margin of one point. The standing-room-only crowd gave Team Europe a rousing ovation at the end of the Championship match. The victory was particularly rewarding for Team Europe as the teams were tied 3-3 in the history of the event, and Team Europe has now won Gold Medals four times in seven years. The Gold Medals and the team checks were presented by Mohegan Sun and Diamond Billiard Tables. The presentations brought another round of cheers from the audience.

Warren Kiamco Champion of the Johnny Archer Classic

Johnny Archer and his beautiful wife Melanie congratulates Warren, the new champion of the Scorpion Cues Johnny Archer Classic! by Charlie Williams Marietta, Georgia- Long time veteran Warren Kiamco did what so few players have ever been able to do, completely dominate America’s top player Shane Van Boening in the finals. Van Boening who is so accustomed to winning on US soil, was completely hammered by the smooth, finesse style of Kiamco. The Scorpion Cues Johnny Archer Classic is a Dragon Promotions production and sanctioned by the Association Of Billiard Professionals as an ABP International Points Ranking Tournament and hosted by the Marietta Billiard Club. The event was supported by Fat Boy Productions Co. and Steve Florentino Billiards. Heavy hitter companies are getting behind the event for the first time as well such as Ozone Billiards and Championship Cloth who will be supplying all the tournament tables Tour Edition 3030 cloth. Billiards Digest, Pool & Billiard Magazine, and Inside Pool Magazine are also sponsoring the event. The tournament is an official ABP Pro Tour sanctioned points tournament for pro rankings. Kiamco jumped to a quick 3-0 lead at the start of the match. And Shane was not able to recoup from there. Warren utterly dominated the entire match and worked to a 9-2 lead within less than an hour in a fast paced match. Shane was able to gain one more game, but fell 11-3 in the finale. Incredibly, Kiamco never had a close match nor a loss the entire event, though the field was filled with stud players such as Rodney Morris, Thorsten Hohmann, Corey Deuel, Shannon Daulton, Charlie Williams, Mike Davis, Johnny Archer and so many more. His closest opponent got to 6 games in the races to 9. “I got tired. Warren played great. That’s pool. I can’t win them all”, said Shane afterwards. “I really am very happy to win this event. I told my good friend Jeremy Sossei before the match, I’m not wishing for Shane to not make a ball on the break. I’m only wishing he doesn’t have a shot!” laughed Kiamco as the crowd laughed with him. “I really want to thank Johnny Archer, he has such a great poolroom. And thanks to Charlie and Dragon Promotions, I hope you do many more events for us.” Scorpion Cues and Championship Cloth’s Tour Edition 3030 are the Official Products used during the Johnny Archer Classic at Archer’s poolroom Photos courtesy of Dragon Promotions

Choices

by Tom Ross Contributing Writer Sometimes it can be a little frightening to think about pool and the precise demands that we continually face to play the game well. When played at its best, the game looks so simple as we watch professionals shooting one easy shot after another. And, that’s probably what stops professional pool from breaking through to mainstream television coverage—the fact that average players can tune in to see so-called champions pocketing balls that nobody would miss. But then when we try it, things don’t seem to go as smoothly as they should, leaving us to wonder if we’ll ever get the hang of this crazy game. When we watch the best players at work, the element that usually stands out most obviously is their exact cue-ball control. And it’s easy to wonder how they can handle that white ball so consistently with such perfect speed and direction. The answer to that question is twofold. One, they’re simply great players and, from years of practice and play, they’ve refined their strokes to manage position play with the sharpest accuracy. The second answer, one that may not be so apparent to an observer, lies in the choices they make, very subtle differences that we may not see, but ones that offer a wider margin for error to help ensure good position for every shot. In the diagram we have a straight-pool setup with four balls left on the table and that striped ball sitting next to the rack in perfect, break-shot position. This layout illustrates a very standard pattern to the break shot. Most players would identify the solid ball on the left side of the table as the key shot, or the last shot before the break shot, since a stop shot on that ball into the side pocket gives ideal position for the break shot. So, we would shoot the solid ball on the right side of the table into the side pocket,

10 PQB December/January

then the striped ball near the right side rail into the corner to land straightin for the stop shot on the solid ball into the side—a simple threeball run to the break shot. How would an experienced player then handle this simple layout? There are no real position challenges in this layout, but in order to get that break shot and open the next rack, we must get to a straight-in or nearlystraight-in angle on the key shot. And reaching that goal with ease depends entirely on how we play the first shot in the side pocket. Let’s examine three choices for position on the second shot, the striped ball into the corner. The obvious choice is to play a soft stop shot on that first ball and allow the cue ball to drift over to position A for an easy straight-in shot on the striped ball into the corner. A slightly firmer hit would move the cue ball to position B, and again an easy shot afterwards. Or we can stun the cue ball a little further to position C, which leaves a cut shot on the striped ball. Which is best? A, probably the popular choice, offers an easy shot on the striped ball but one that requires drawing the cue ball straight back to the X for the necessary position on the key shot, perhaps not so easy as it sounds, especially under pressure. Under drawing the cue ball would leave an angle on the key shot that moves the cue ball away from the break shot thus making it longer and more dif-

ficult. Over drawing the cue ball past the X, even slightly, would be disastrous since the angle on the key shot from there would move the cue ball toward the break shot and likely make position for it extremely difficult, if not impossible. Position B for the striped ball is definitely the worst of the three because of the slight cut angle it offers on the striped ball, an angle that’s just enough to move the cue ball toward the cushion, maybe freezing it there, but would require a very firm hit to bounce the cue ball away from the cushion, all while trying to draw the cue ball to a spot near the X. The savvy player would look at this layout and opt to stun the cue ball over to C. From C, all that’s required is a stop shot to move the cue ball on the solid line off the cushion and toward the key shot. Position C gives the shooter a twofoot margin of error for speed with a cue ball that’s tracking right on the line for the desired position angle. Also, the cue ball does not have to fall exactly at C to achieve that result. A cue ball that falls short of C by three or four inches or rolls past that mark by the same margin will still allow for easy position on the key shot with nothing but a small speed adjustment, depending on where it lies. This one example gives us a nice look at the kind of thinking that makes the best players look so great. When we watch professionals play and admire their perfect position play, we can do so now with an eye for the choices they make to achieve such impressive results. A good question to ask is what kind of shot would that player have if he or she had hit the previous one a little harder or softer? Very often the answer will be “a good one” because of a smarter choice.

World’s Best Women Pool Players Competed at Chinook Winds Casino Resort

I

f you were a guest at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in beautiful Lincoln City, Oregon this past week, not only will you be able to experience breathtaking views of the Pacific Coast and its fierce ocean, but you might also be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of sea lions, whales and the best women pool players in the world! Chinook Winds Casino Resort was host to the WPBA 2012 Tour Championship and all its festivities. The five day event kicked off with an Award Banquet on Wednesday afternoon. Players and their guests were treated to fine dining while recipients of the awards were announced. Those recipients included Jana Montour as ‘Rookie of the Year’, Teruko Cuccelelli won the ‘Most Improved Player’, the ‘Tournament Director’ Award went to Allison Fisher and Linda Pault was the recipient of the President’s Award for all of her years of service to the WPBA. Following the Awards Banquet, there was a Charity Event in which top ranked players generously donated their time to support. Forty eight players competed in this prestigious tournaments. Players earned their spots by their rank over a six tournament period, no qualifiers were held for this event which insured that only the best were in attendance. Matches began on Thursday and included an exciting new format called “Bonus Pool” within the main event. Any player that achieved a ‘Nine on the Break’ or a ‘Break and Run’ in their first two rounds of play, received additional money based on how many of these they accumulated. In addition, an audience member received a gift bag donated by American Poolplayers Association and WPBA each time a player attained this. There were almost 50 times this took place and a ticket was drawn for a fan to win, with Kelly Fisher taking the lead for the most Bonus Pool wins! During the week, in the room adjacent to the WPBA arena, the American Poolplayers Association held a “side-by-side” tournament where their members competed in an event of their own. This enabled the pros and amateurs to come together and take pictures, sign autographs and even play a few games of pool! The two players entering the finals undefeated. Jasmin Ouschan defeated Vicki Paski 9-1, Jana Montour 9-3, number 1 seed Allison Fisher 9-6 and Jennifer Barretta 9-1. Karen Corr was the second victor with wins over Jessica Barnes 9-2, a 12 PQB December/January

close matches with Xiaoting Pan and Kelly Fisher, Karen winning both 9-7. With the early rounds out of the way, the tournament became single elimination as the ESPN crews moved in to film the semi-finals and final match. Jasmin drew Allison Fisher and for a second time, proved it was her day, defeating Allison 7-3. Meanwhile, Corr was practically handed her match against Ga Young Kim 7-5, as Kim made uncharacteristic mistakes toward the end of several racks leaving Corr to easily clean up the table. In the finals, Jasmin jumps out to a very strong start with break and runs on 2 of the 4 first games and led 4-0 before Karen would get on the board. Karen played smart chess-like moves to get back in the game, but Jasmins offensive game was too much in this match and Jasmin took down another giant to win the WPBA 2012 Tour Championship title! First and second place were presented gorgeous hand blow glass trophy bowls as well as the popular Pendleton blankets by Chinook Winds Casino Resort. Other players having finishes worth mentioning were Jennifer Barretta placing 5th, Kim White-Newsome, Mary Rakin and Nicole Keeney finishing tied for 9th, and Jana Montour showing her “Rookie of the Year” award was well deserved by her finishing in the top 16. The semi-final and final matches will be televised on ESPN2 December 16th from 4-7pm EST. Visit wpba.com for the upcoming schedule of events for 2013.

What Would a Sucker Do?

If you look around the room and don’t see any suckers…. YOU are the sucker! by Jacqueline Karol • House Pro at DownLo Billiards Chico, Calif. League Operator & Tournament Director • www.BilliardsBootCamp.com

Y

ou have stripes here. You each only have one ball left and the 8-ball. Your opponent’s ball, the solid, is sitting in the jaws and is directly blocking your corner pocket shot. What do you do? 1) “Bank your stripe in the corner!” 2) “Slowly roll the your ball up in on front of their solid to prevent them from hitting their ball!” 3) “Replace their ball with yours by softly shooting yours directly into theirs!” Suckers… You must assess each situation to come to the best possible answer, which is the one with the highest winning percentage. Why are these not good ideas?: Bank shots are low percentage and if you miss, your opponent will most surely run out and win. Slow rolling your stripe in front of theirs with accurate speed control is very hard to do and the cost is high if you miss. It is a high cost because their solid is in the jaws which makes it which makes it a “bigger ball to hit” meaning, easier to hit, because there is a bigger margin of error. For example, they

can pocket it if they hit directly into it kick it in hitting rail first from many more points compared to a shot that is farther away from the pocket. Furthermore, it is very likely that they will pocket the 8-ball to win because it goes in every pocket. Softly shooting your ball into theirs will leave your ball in the jaws but you probably won’t get another shot because you will leave them an easy shot on the 8-ball. Answer: Use draw to put forward spin on your stripe and call it in the corner. This will likely result either one of two positive outcomes: A: If you pocket your stripe, you can now shoot the 8-ball to win the game. B: If your ball does not follow it in and instead, stays in the jaws, you have now blocked their pocket with your stripe because you used a draw speed to set your 8-ball shot in that same corner. By thinking more than one shot ahead and assessing the likely possibilities, tremendously increases your odds of winning.

63 Combination Basics

by Robert Byrne From “Byrne’s Complete Book of Pool Shots” with permission

A

t the right is a frozen combination that isn’t aimed at the pocket. To redirect the 5 ball to the left, hit the 3ball on the right side. This is surprising news to beginners, even if they have college degrees in science. If the gap between the balls is a half inch and the line of centers is the same, you would have to hit the 3-ball on the left side to cut the 5-ball in. The point to remember is that the position of the third ball is what influences a combination that is frozen or almost frozen. At the left, hitting the 3-ball results in failure. Hitting the 2ball first throws the 5-ball into the pocket.

When you cry about your opponents good rolls you don’t understand the nature of competition. You don’t belong in a game like pocket billiards. Unfortunately, the majority cry when they get bad luck. Open the Gate Shot

H

ere is a very tough shot that was included in the 2012 Professional Artistic Pool Shot Program. Like many shots in our program categorized as stroke shots, this shot requires a special stroke that would not typically come up in an ordinary game of pool. The object is to draw the cue ball back into the head rail and then into rail 1. After hitting rail 1 the cue ball will hit the short cue, make it roll away from the blocker ball and open a gap for the cue ball to travel through and pocket the object ball into pocket “B”. Start by placing your first object ball along the 2nd diamond line but no further than 3 balls width away from rail 3. Next place another object ball in the jaw of pocket “B”. Place your blocker ball on the 3rd diamond. After, place your rack and a short cue in the position shown. By rule, the short cue may not be more than 1 chalks width away from the blocker ball. Finally, place your cue ball 2 mm away from object ball 1. If you do not feel comfortable with this try starting with your cue ball about an inch away and as your skill begins to progress work your way to the 2 mm mark. Remember to play object ball 1 more towards the long rail. Due to the english you will be putting it will throw left when executing the shot. Put maximum 5:00 on the cue ball and use a hard stroke. This will allow the cue ball to draw back into the short rail and the side spin will keep the cue ball moving so that it has enough speed to push the short cue away from the blocker ball and able it to pocket object ball 2. Enjoy this great shot!

Van Boening Wins Over Archer at Emerald Billiards

In an epic conclusion, Shane Van Boening and Johnny Archer put on a show for the ages. Both players were on their top A+ game with big runs and unbelievable comebacks in the 10-Ball Pro Classic finals. The finals between Van Boening and Archer started off lopsided with Shane breaking and running the first 4 racks. He went up 5-0 before Archer could mark a game up. Curvaceous Shots

by Tom Simpson, Master Instructor • PoolClinics.com Contributing Writer

O

ccasionally, shots come up where your cueball path to the object ball is just barely blocked by another ball. Sometimes it’s just the edge of a ball that’s in the way. If the blocker is closer to the cueball (perhaps a quarter to a third of the way to the object ball), jumping over the obstruction is often a solution. However, if the blocker is closer to the object ball (half to three quarters of the way to the object ball), elevating and shooting a curve shot may be appropriate. In addition to being useful and occasionally practical, curve shots are ballsy and fun. If you actually make your curve shot, it tends to impress the spectators and intimidate your opponent. On the other hand, if you miss badly, well, you might look stupid. Let’s look at what we need to understand to make “basic, easy curve shots” such as Shot 1 in the diagram, which calls for a slight curve around the edge of the 13-ball. Shot 2 demonstrates several of the principles involved, while curving around the dreaded side pocket point. Shot 3 shows a more difficult application of the curve shot, curving around an entire ball. Begin to get a feel for curving the cueball by shooting some Shot 2’s. To pocket the 2-ball, elevate your cue moderately (maybe 20° to 30°) and hit through the cueball with low, rail-side english. You’ll notice that you can aim straight down the rail and hit with the english shown, and the CB will take off at an angle a few degrees out from the rail line. This is squirt (aka, “cueball deflection”), and is caused, to greater or lesser degrees, by all shafts. Next, you see the CB slowing down and then curving back toward the rail. With a little practice, you’ll find how

22 PQB December/January

“Beat People With a Stick!” National Billiard Academy 3-Day Intensives • 10 cities

much elevation, tip offset, and speed will work for the equipment and desired curve of the moment. If you’re not getting much visible curve, you’re probably hitting too hard. When you hit hard, the ball may not have enough time to curve the amount you had in mind. Try softer. If you’re diving into the rail too early, you may be using too much sidespin. Change one thing at a time. Just as with normal flat shots, intend to hit through the cueball. You have to convince that cueball to take that elevated sidespin. Make it swerve. A poke won’t do it. Your elevated stick should point down the initial aim line for the shot, allowing for squirt and swerve. To understand where to hit the cueball for “low rail-side english”, consider that as you elevate the stick, all the english spots on the cueball rotate upward with the stick angle. Balls only curve while they’re skidding. So for curve shots, as we hit low, we cause backspin. Backspin slows the cueball. As the cueball moves more slowly, the sidespin acts more strongly and curves the ball off the line. You could think of it as “draw allows more curve.” As we elevate more, the sidespin generated becomes stronger relative to the forward speed of the CB. In other words, as we elevate, more of the power of the stroke goes into sidespin and less into forward speed. Hitting with elevation

and power is how players can produce the beautifully violent curves we see in massé exhibitions. Note that massé shots are generally performed with a nearly vertical cue stick. Much tougher. Shot 2 can help you quickly gain a good feel for curving. Remove the object ball, and experiment with various curve distances and amounts. You can see your aim angle by looking at how much your stick points outward from the rail line. You can watch the curves unfold and see where you veered back into the rail. Good clear feedback. Shot 3 may now be manageable (aim farther out, more sidespin, less speed), and Shot 1 could become a no-brainer. Practice for even five minutes, and you’ll have a sense of this. Then, when it comes up, step up and curve that ball with authority.

Bar Box 8-Ball

By: Marty Kaczmarowski, APA 7 Contibuting Writer

Beware of bad breakers! Here is a trap that can lead to very lop sided scores. I’ve played numerous matches getting beat and thought I played well, but came out the loser. My opponent wins the lag and breaks. He comes up dry or shoots one ball and misses leaving a couple clusters here and there. The table looks like I can run out and so I start the attempt. Five shots in, I realize I’m in trouble and now I have to go for it or my opponent will simply run the rest of the rack. I get hooked or miss: he cleans up and wins. The cycle then repeats. DO NOT be the player who runs the front half and then gets stuck. Your initial “after the break analysis” must determine if the table is worth going for the run out. If the table looks tough: simply miss or play safe early and set the trap for the other guy.

Pedro Piedrabuena Wins USBA Tour Open at Paris Bida in Houston, TX. by Doug Deitel USBA Director

From Friday October 19, 2012 to Sunday October 20, 2012 eleven players from outside Texas joined 15 local players and two from Dallas Texas to vie for the $7,500.00 in added prize money. The event represented the first time a USBA Tour Open tournament had been held in Houston, so everyone was working hard to ensure success! What a success it was! The players and more than 100 spectators who joined us were treated to some of the finest displays of three cushion skills they have seen in a while. And the best surprise of all was that quite a bit of the exciting play came from many of the hometown players who fought hard in this premier event. From the upsets in early rounds... to the great semi-final and final match... the 8-Gabriels tables at Paris Bida provided the perfect surface for these masters of the game to work their magic. The final match was Live Streamed on ustream.tv in spite of the technical challenges of low Internet bandwidth and low light con-

ditions. The effort yielded a very exciting match, which was recorded and can be seen (in parts due to the up and down conditions) at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/dogloose-ch1. The tournament format was also a rarity for the USBA. After a preliminary round of four flights of 7, 16 players were matched in a single elimination final, which proved to be as exciting as anyone could have hoped. With every game meaning life or death in the tournament the crowd and the players held their collective breath on almost every shot. In the final match we were treated to the great skills and competitive spirit that have so often been demonstrated by our two great champions - Pedro and Hugo. As was expected the points were tight and the lead was always up for grabs. As the game progressed and the

billiards mounted there was no way to know who would end up on top. Hugo had the lead at 2118 when Pedro scored an impressive shot that brought a roar from the crowd. He followed that up with another and another to lock it up at 21. Then came two more to take the lead at 23-21 before his run of 5 would end. After making but one, Hugo sat down and Pedro took over once again. And this time he would not let up. While Hugo could only sit and watch, Pedro ran 6 to get to 29 before he would miss by the smallest of margins. Could Hugo match this effort? But the bank shot to the corner would not make, and Pedro returned for what would prove to be the final billiard of the tournament. This time it was Pedro who played the bank shot to the corner to make the final score Pedro over Hugo 30-22. The final standings for the tournament are as follows (Note: Players who exited the brackets at the same round were awarded equal position and prize money by decision of the tournament director.) 1st-Pedro Piedrabuena 2nd-Hugo Patino (right) 3rd-Andres Naranjo 3rd-Kim Hoang 5th-Mazin Shooni 5th-Michael Kang 7th-Joel Rivera 7th-Jamil Isreal 9th-16th all received Sonny Cho Cong Nguyen Dung Nguyen Thanh Vu Patrick Tran Peter Nguyen Jim Shovak Ellis Lawrence

Special thanks must go out to the many people who worked behind the scenes and on the front line to make the first USBA Tour Open Tournament in Houston a rousing success. First, thanks to Thinh and Toan Tran the owners of Paris Bida whose gracious hospitality and top-notch venue made this event one of the most enjoyable on the Tour. Thanks to the co-tournament directors Jim Shovak and Doug Deitel who did a superb job in running the event to smooth perfection. Thanks to Professor-QBall (Paul Frankel) for taking pictures, video and covering the event for his online and print publication. A tip of the hat must go to Lan Vo, a fine local player who not only played in the tournament and showed some great skill, but who served as the driving force behind bringing the Open event to Houston. And finally, thanks to all the players who truly demonstrated great skill and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

President’s Desk

A little over five years ago, the USBA began a concerted effort to move its three-cushion national championship tournament beyond the poolroom in order to expose the game to others, and also to provide our feature event with the prestige it rightly deserves. After looking over the possibilities for 2013, we landed upon a beautiful solution: the Allen Hopkins Super Billiard Expo (SBX) at the New Jersey Convention and Expo Center in Edison. The timing was right—April. The venue was perfect—a private room on the main floor. The event—well, what can be said? The SBX will be in its 21st year. Allen Hopkins is a member of the BCA Hall of Fame. The SBX hosted the Champion of Champions tournament the last two years. And, of course, the SBX is the premier tradeshow on the east coast: it brings together billiard players, cue makers, table manufacturers, case makers, cloth manufacturers, ball manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors, spectators and others. When Allen Hopkins extended the offer to us (and agreed to help financially), we didn’t have to think long or hard. The SBX begins April 4, but the USBA tournament will begin on Wednesday, April 3 with registration, practice and a preliminary round. The tournament will end on Sunday, April 7. Gabriels will supply the tables. Diamond Billiard Products will supply the table lights. Go to www.superbilliardsexpo.com for more information about the SBX. See you there!

Pick a Rail Shot

This is an interesting exercise for getting to control the force follow stroke. Elevate the cue ball 15 degrees and shoot into the yellow ball with the cue ball, using top left English with a firm stroke. When you see the yellow ball fly off to the left rail and the cue ball takes a curve to the right with a little slower speed and head for the corner you’ll know that you made a legal strike. See if you can make the cue ball hit the red ball straight on, and then try to hit the red on the long rail side to score. Then for a real challenge try hitting the red for a point from the short rail as the last rail. All the cue ball needs is to take a wider turn in the corner. OH YEAH?

Each shot is worth 2 points (48 pts max) and the total number of points wins. Three small round dots (stick-ons) are placed on the table, which represents the exact placement of the diagrammed shots. All players will have the same shot and same placement of the 3 balls. Then the dots will be removed and replaced for the next shot selection. Special Note: After each shot a player has a straight rail carom shot (no rails required) as the balls come to rest. If they make it, it will be worth 1 point added to their previous scores. This means that the maximum possible score will be 72 points if they made every shot. The quickest way to get new players to play the game of 3-Cushion is to reach out to pool players

Medford Elks Lodge

T

he 50th Annual Southern Oregon Invitational 3 Cushion Billiard Tournament was just completed at the historic Medford Elks Lodge. Sixty players participated in the team event, and nearly fifty of those players also took part in the three Singles tournaments that took place simultaneously. More than 100 people attended the awards banquet, including the family of Doc Miller, who had started the tournament back in 1963, and Bruce Braaten, who had played in the very first tournament and also played as a sub in the 50th. Tournament attendees were also treated to amusing billiard tales told by Bob Byrne (who won the Senior Singles tournament), and to an Artistic Pool Exhibition donated to us by Dr. Cue, Tom Rossman, who also made an impressive showing at his first time in the team tournament.

“A” and “B” Singles Tournament Finalists. L to R: Mark Hansen, A Singles Winner, Galen Lee, B Singles Runner up, Hans Handgraaf, A Singles Runner-up, Alfred Wenzl, B Singles Winner.

Being the 50th tournament was not the only milestone for this event. In addition, it was the first time it was played on modern Gabriels heated tables, thanks to an enormously generous donation from Bob Tracy and donations of money and effort from 37 other players. Also for the first time, we produced a Commemorative Program for all the players including a history of the event, lists of tournament

winners, and loads of photos. A limited number of copies are available for sale by contacting Mark Williams, tournament cochairman, for an order form at mark.b.williams@charter.net.

Winning Team Photo Caption: Winners of the Team Event. Back Row L to R: Tom Resk, Gary Felder, John Fleming, Jim Spannaus, Bob Tracy, Ron Hopkins; Front Row L to R: Bob Horecky, James Wong, George Theobald, Team Captain Max Fisher, Don Dayan, Hans Handgraaf, Harvey Wixman, Jimmy Martinez. Articles and graphs 25 to 30 will show you how the calculations are made. Article and graph 64 are the next step for that segment. Once the Cue Ball is above the OB1, and you wish to play the same shot pattern, there is a method of calculating that position. It is shown in Graph 64. You will still use the same count as you did before. The change is the deduction that is given for the Cue Ball’s position. It is very important to use “ Make Speed “ for these shots! Billiard Buddies, In the next issue of Professor Cue Ball News. I will give you more ADVANCED concepts of the Below the Ball system segment shown in article and graph 64 Starting next year I will show you HOW to MISS KISSES. All you will need to know are the Cue Ball / Object Ball angles, so start studying the past graphs to learn those angles.

World-ranked trick shot artist and entertainer, Tim Chin, also known as “The Dragon,” is no stranger to giving. His insightful website has been a wealth of knowledge for trick shot enthusiasts for many years. The MIT grad also believes in the importance of higher education. The modest Chin has a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering. “The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) lets kids engage in pool as an organized activity, an option I never saw when I was growing up. Our sport needs more ambassadors like Tim!” said Samm Diep-Vidal, Executive Director for the BEF. Tim Chin is available for exhibitions, instruction, and events. SoRewarding.com Raises $1,000 for the Billiard Education Foundation Big Success for “Chalk up for a Cause” Fundraiser Event at Felt Billiards

O

n Saturday, November 3 the SoRewarding Crew arrived at Felt Billiards in Englewood, Colorado setting up decorations, raffle prizes and t-shirts to prepare for a fun day fundraising. Chalkboard signs throughout the room with sayings like, “Party for a Purpose,” set the tone for the 4-hour event. The crew was on a mission to raise money for the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) and that’s exactly what they did. The company’s unique business model combines party-goers and venues with nonprofits to create a win-win-win situation for everyone. At this event, a $15 ticket got patrons two drinks, chips & dips, free pool, a pair of complimentary movie passes (courtesy of Southglenn Stadium 14 in South Denver), and a chance at some exclusive drawings. The profit from the ticket sales is then shared between the venue, SoRewarding, and the nonprofit. Many of the BEF junior players were present to challenge the adults on the pool tables and the event also introduced a lot of new faces to Felt and to the billiard community. SoRewarding kicked off the spirit of giving with a generous donation of $500. Between the ticket sales, raffle sales, and donations, the day brought in $1,000. “On behalf of Felt and the Billiard Education Foundation, we’re thrilled with the event’s turnout and everyone’s kindness. SoRewarding.com is doing some really amazing things in the Denver metro area and I hope more people get involved,” said Samm Diep-Vidal, Executive Director for the BEF. “SoRewarding is dedicated to giving back to local non-profit

organizations like the Billiard Education Foundation and we love being able to do this through our RewardingCrew events! This event could not have been possible without the helpfulness of the Felt staff and the generous patrons who came out for this wonderful event! This event was just another great way to meet new people in Denver and raise money for great local cause,” said Kerstan B. Saylor, SoRewarding Event Coordinator. Established in 2011, SoRewarding.com is a cause-focused social network that integrates giving with daily activities. The company has created a technology platform where users can request discounts, plan events, sell tickets and create and support fundraisers. For every action on SoRewarding, the company donates to a local non-profit of the user’s choice. Call (303) 339-3710 or visit SoRewarding.com to learn more about ways you can get involved. The Billiard Education Foundation was formed in 1993 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity committed to promoting a lifelong love of pool and building the next generation of players through youth programs and academic scholarships. Visit billiardeducation.org or call (303) 926-1039 to learn more about junior billiard programs in your area.
