HELLO

Looking back in order to move forward ... I have recently been reviewing where the Women’s Lifestyle Expo was this time last year. This has given me a wonderful opportunity to reflect over the past 12 months and I am impressed with what has been accomplished and achieved. The change is not only circumstantial but in myself and the ongoing vision for Expo. Personally, one of my greatest and defining points of difference is my passion for women in the community. To see women on the Sunshine Coast connected and supported to live empowered and fulfilled lives is a driving passion that energises me to excel and achieve. The Women’s Lifestyle Expo is the result of that passion. This time last year I had a clear vision of how to expand the Women’s Lifestyle Expo and achieve greater reach and impact in our community. I have seen that vision come to life through the Inspire Program, which aims to connect and support women and families within the community through Family Connect, Women Connect and Community Connect, and the Personal Mentoring program. We identified the need for families on the Coast to be connected with other families. Family Connect hosts a picnic in the park event where families relax, connect, meet new people and have fun. It has been a resounding success, with numbers growing steadily. Read more about Family Connect on page 24. Women Connect is another Inspire initiative which has been very well received and successful. Monthly Women Connect nights provide a way for women to meet other Coast girls and make new friends and connections in a relaxed setting. Again, read about Women’s Connect on page 26. More recently, Inspire Program has initiated Community Connect. We believe there are valuable community groups already set up and doing a wonderful job in their chosen field. So we decided to partner with other community groups, providing them with support for their projects. Currently, we have been very proud to assist: Give Me 5 for Kids and Sunshine Coast Stepmums, as well as providing pampering sessions for women in women’s refuges.

Our Personal Mentoring program offers women a mentor to help them grow and develop in a particular area. We want to encourage and inspire women to reach their full potential. We have had excellent responses to these new projects and are continually developing and building each of the initiatives. A huge undertaking during the past 12 months has been for our team who are creating a training manual and package for the Women’s Lifestyle Expo in preparation for taking our trademark to other regions. We are looking forward to supporting people in other communities who have the same passion to see people connected. Have you ever heard the word 'connect’ mentioned so often in such a short time frame? I make no apologies, connecting others is my driving passion. The progress and growth of the Inspire Program indicates a real need in our community for people to be connected in order to build new relationships. If what has happened in the last 12 months is anything to go by, watch this space! From little things, BIG things grow. It has been a busy and sometimes very stretching five years since our first Expo. As we continue to focus on our community, amazing doors have opened. I can only encourage each of you to take time to LOOK BACK IN ORDER TO MOVE FORWARD! See you at 2013 Women’s Lifestyle Expo.

“I

want my story to inspire others, never to give up, no matter what.” Bethany Hamilton, author of Soul Surfer. “The Shark may have eaten my arm, but I was determined it was not going to devour my dream.” As she stood on Peter Gerber’s doorstep wearing a sleeveless top and no prosthetic arm, the Movie Mogul was impressed by Bethany Hamilton’s shocking sense of ease. Only months after a 14-foot tiger shark ripped off her left arm at the shoulder, Bethany was not only back on her board, but winning championships. “Where does your self confidence come from?” asked Guber, who brought us Rain Man, Batman, and Gorillas in the Mist. Through the process of writing her book, Bethany Hamilton discovered the bigger reason for her life. Her faith deepened, as she wrote, along with clarity on her purpose: “To help others know God’s love. I want my story to inspire others, never to give up no matter what.” Bethany Hamilton’s courage, personal transformation and her willingness to write, promote and publish her story means that women around the world can be inspired to see echoes of possibility within themselves. Can you feel the nudge? Are you thinking, “If she did it, then I can too?” Your stories have the power to touch people’s hearts. Your experience only becomes wisdom when you share it.

www.womenslifestyleexpo.com.au

You have at least one book within you that’s begging to be written, right now. Excavating your story and writing your book is an extraordinary, exciting and evolutionary process that takes you from writer to published author. The personal journey you’ll experience as you craft your ideas and commit them to print will reward you with your becoming someone even more amazing than the person you are today. You’ll transform as you capture your thoughts and shape your words into paragraphs and chapters. You’ll be the tour guide as you take your readers on a ride through the universe you have created. You’ll morph into your most magnificent self as a result of the magic of writing. Something brilliant shifts in quantum as you take your thoughts, experiences and knowledge and weave your words. When you write your story, you’ll find that you can create your difference in the lives of others. Peter Guber found Bethany’s story compelling – and so did the president of Sony Pictures. The movie of Bethany’s book Soul Surfer is soon to be released. Nadine Love inspires and instructs coaches, speakers and authors on writing, promoting and publishing their transformational books. Through her comprehensive 9 step system Nadine will take you by the hand to assist you to access your inspiration and take you all the way to achieving your imprint – and beyond. Yes, you can hold your book in your hands!

soul food words tonia zemek

Artist and organic gardener Nicola Chatham has done my work for me. “I’m an artist first and a gardener second,” Nicola says. “I’ll always be an artist and I’ll always see the world that way. Gardening has been a way to help my health but it’s not my soul’s expression.” With that eloquent self-summation, her story is told. Of course there’s more to discuss, but she’s somehow got to the heart of her history with those first few lines of dialogue. Many years ago, she worked as a journalist for an online magazine so, naturally, she knows how to tell a story. Perhaps even more telling is her openness in revealing just how far she’s come in her own journey. “My parents got divorced when I was 15 and I became quite depressed,” she says matterof-factly. “I really lost all my creativity and I didn’t do any art for quite a few years.” Eventually she eased her way back to the easel and went on to study a Bachelor of Fine Art. “My paintings have always been based on nature and the landscape. Some of the most comforting times I’ve had have been in nature. That’s where I draw a connection to something bigger than myself.” “I find real value in nature more so than in consumerism or popular culture. Nature fuels my soul.” As it turns out, nature has also played a part in fueling her body. expomagazine

“Organic food has made it so much easier to get the nutrients into my body that gives it the building blocks to heal.” In the mid-2000s, Nicola was struck down with Giardia – a parasite that attacks the body’s gut lining and makes food digestion a nightmare. “I’d eat something and then feel like my gut was on fire.” She was also hit with the Epstein-Barr virus that affected her emotions and contributed to a diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She tried a myriad of treatments but only found real relief by eating organic foods. She took up a plot at the Peregian Beach Community Garden (known to locals as Veggie Village) and started growing her own produce. Later she bought a property in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and from there her garden really grew.

Story 1 Nicola Chatham

Nicola describes her plot as “organic” but I’m keen to clarify how that’s defined. “For me, the term means that I don’t use any chemicals, pesticides or herbicides in the garden. Instead I use organic matter for my fertilizer like manures, mulch to keep weeds down and liquid fertilizers made from seaweed instead of chemical-based fertilizers.” Judging from her hearty harvests, it sounds like a winning combination. Asparagus, kale, parsley, chives, spring onions, mandarins, lemons, oranges and apples make up just some of the fruits of her labour.

“Organic food has made it so much easier to get the nutrients into my body that gives it the building blocks to heal,” Nicola explains. Around 70 per cent of her fresh food now comes from just outside her back door. With that kind of convenience, she says, it’s pretty easy to ignore fast food because what could be faster than picking up your produce within metres of your kitchen? It’s an idea that’s really taken root. Nicola runs an online program, The Abundant Veggie Patch System, using videos that step novices through designing, assembling and planting a low-maintenance organic veggie garden. In two-and-a-half years, she’s guided over 100 gardening students from around the globe. All the while, she’s still been busy painting. In fact she’s planning to build a studio not far from the garden. “Painting and gardening are similar. You have to have a vision, gather your resources and have faith because you don’t know how it’s going to turn out but it’s very soul satisfying. It can be frustrating, but at the end of the day it’s very rewarding.”

Without the assurance of a business background to rely on, Carolyn Creswell, then 18, instead armed herself with resilience, determination, self-belief and the ability to adapt. With just $1000 to her name this inspirational woman took a gamble that paid off and is today at the helm of a multinational company exporting to 32 countries around the globe.

“I’m a pretty resilient person and I try to work out how to make the best out of the situation.” Taking on so much responsibility at such a young age would be a daunting task for many but for Carolyn the decision to dive into the business with her life savings was a simple one – it was either that or lose her job. Carolyn explains, “Even then it seemed like a small amount. It is a big commitment; you can’t decide you don’t want to do it anymore. I was really just thinking about my job. I thought ‘I have been doing most of this business myself and I don’t want to lose my job’. At that stage we only had one product and once a week I made 200 kilos.” That weekly job working for a small business that made homemade muesli for delis and cafes around Melbourne was the beginning of what would be a roller-coaster ride to the top. After initially refusing her offer, the business reconsidered and Carolyn became the face behind Carman’s Fine Foods. Carolyn describes the first five years as the toughest. With limited business knowledge or training, she was forced to hit the ground running and that is exactly what she did, learning new skills on the job to ensure the business would grow to become the hugely popular and successful enterprise it is today. “It has been a journey and each year when I had to learn something, like reconciling a business statement, I kept asking people and building my skill set. I had confidence in myself not necessarily the business. I never worried if I didn’t know something, I would just go off and learn it. I think that made a big difference, not being scared,” Carolyn said. “I’m a pretty resilient person and I try to work out how to make the best out of the situation. It’s a daily mindset and how you approach the business, making the evolution and the product better. The big thing is managing the people and making sure 20

the culture is great, having the right people, recruiting well and making sure everyone is moving forward together. Once the business is afloat it takes a big weight off your shoulders.” Carolyn’s business approach contributes to a healthy and productive workplace where all employees are treated with a work-life balance in mind. She has received several awards for her achievements, including 2007 Young Entrepreneur of the Year, finalist in the 2008 Telstra Business Woman of the Year Awards and 2009 InStyle Women of Style Awards. Carolyn admits there were times when she was tempted to walk away from the business, but her determination pushed her through and today she is proud to be part of a team that is as dedicated and passionate as she is. “The problem was I just couldn’t do that, I had responsibilities. The first five years were really tough and I understand what small business owners go through to establish a business and I never imagined it would be as big as it is today,” Carolyn said. Her success certainly didn’t happen overnight but is something that she has slogged away at for the past 20 years. Carolyn says there was never really a moment when she knew her brand had become a success, but rather pivotal points along the way. “Getting listed in Coles was a big step forward and being in New York and seeing the product sold out was really exciting.” Carman’s currently exports to 32 countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, the US and UK. It is the number-one-selling muesli brand in Australia. 2013 may be the 20th anniversary of Carman’s, but it seems the journey has only just begun and Carolyn Creswell is as determined as ever.

Q&A

baby love Any new mum will attest to the total life change a new baby brings, particularly your first born. No matter how many well-meaning family and friends try to warn you, nothing prepares you for the immense and unconditional love you feel for your child (or the first few sleepdeprived months!). And just when we think we have the hang of it, many of us are preparing to ease our way back into the workforce. While there are benefits of regaining some ‘me’ time back in the office, it certainly requires planning your day with military precision. The Profile Magazine family welcomed two gorgeous new additions last year, with both our founder Genine Howard and creative director Kara de Schot giving birth to their first children Jack and Jay. Both Kara and Genine have returned to the workforce in a part-time capacity and I recently caught up with the first time mums to discover the joys and challenges of motherhood they have experienced so far. How has life changed since having your first baby ladies? Genine: To be honest, not a huge amount has changed in terms of my lifestyle, but in relation to what’s important to me, having Jack has had an enormous impact. I feel now that I have absolute clarity in my life. Kara: I feel like my life has only just started! My world used to revolve around myself and my career, however since Jay has been born, those priorities have definitely dropped a rung or two down the ladder.

words ingrid nelson | photo chesterton smith photography Is it what you expected? Genine: Yes and no! I knew it would be life changing, however I thought more in terms of impact on our lives and time. What I wasn’t prepared for was that now he is here, I can’t remember ever having been able to live without him! Kara: I didn’t know what to expect! Although I was given loads of advice (some helpful and some downright terrifying), it is true that no one can prepare you for both the joy and the fatigue that comes with motherhood.

“I wasn’t made to be a full-time stay-at-home mother. I have a massive respect for ladies that choose this path.” Kara de Schot You have both returned to work in a part-time capacity. How are you coping with that? Genine: I am loving it! I have found that I am achieving just about as much as I was prior to having a baby – the difference now is that I use every moment when he is asleep to get work done (although that is often thrown out the window!). Kara: I love to work, I’m not sure if this is a good or a bad trait! I have a very active nine-month-old who climbs, crawls, stands, plays, wriggles and giggles all day long. He loves going to his family daycare mum, Kylie, and playing with the ‘big kids’ all day while I work. I find spending a day at work is a breeze compared to being at home with a baby!

“I still am the same person I was prior to having a baby, in fact, I feel now a far better version of myself, and going back to work has helped me retain my identity.” Genine Howard

What are the benefits of being a working mum?

What are some survival tips you have discovered?

Genine: Having a baby means a whole identity change for women. For the most part, it is certainly for the better, but I also can understand how some women seem to lose themselves – instead of being seen as a business woman / wife / friend you instantly become seen as a ‘mum’. I am keen not to be defined by having had a child. I still am the same person I was prior to having a baby, in fact, I feel now a far better version of myself, and going back to work has helped me retain my identity. I am a mother first and foremost, so now my working life is moulded and shaped around that.

Genine: Think of your babies crying as just really loud talking! And take every day as it comes – there is no need to be supermum!

Kara: I get to keep my sanity! I wasn’t made to be a full-time stay-at-home mother. I have a massive respect for ladies that choose this path. I find because I spend three days in the office, I really look forward to my days at home with Jay and treat that time together like gold. What are some of the challenges of returning to work?

Kara: Always keep a pouch of puree on hand. I have a puree stash in my handbag, in the glove box in the car, in the pram – you can never have too much puree. More importantly though, join a mothers group with babies the same age as yours, these girls have been my lifeline in the wee hours of the morning when breastfeeding in the early days. They were right there with me on facebook doing the same thing, I always had support! Any plans for more children? Genine: Being an older mother and also having had three miscarriages before finally having Jack, we have no plans for more children. However, if it happens, it happens! We are letting the universe decide.

Genine: I am extremely lucky to own my own businesses, and having recently sold Profile Magazine, I have the luxury of being able to relax for a while – if I want!

Kara: After the first day I thought “Never again!”, then after day five I thought “I am definitely having another one!”. Funny how time changes your mind! But I am going to give myself a few years to savour my baby boy first, it’s true they grow up so fast.

Kara: Time management is my biggest challenge. I used to roll out of bed about 20 minutes before I started work. Now it’s more like an hour and a half, and then I am still rushing!

Do you think there is too much pressure these days on mothers to do it all?

What advice would you offer for first time parents, especially those who are planning on returning to work? Genine: I would say go easy on yourself. Take as much time as you can (and can afford) to spend bonding with your baby, as you can never get that time back. kara: Allow yourself at least three months to have your head in a spin getting to know your little one, and then if you are able to, take all the time you need before joining the workforce again. I thought I would be right to start working three months after giving birth, but it took seven months before I felt comfortable leaving Jay in someone else’s care.

www.womenslifestyleexpo.com.au

Genine: Absolutely – Since the ‘70s we women have been conditioned to believe that you aren’t ‘successful’ if you are a stay-at-home mother. Being a parent and raising and developing a child is the greatest job one can do. I personally don’t feel fulfilled unless I am working, so for me I love combining working and parenting – I am however careful to ensure that my boundaries between the two are very clear. Kara: I think mothers often put too much pressure on themselves. I have to remind myself that I don’t have to achieve everything in one day. I am trying my hardest to slow down, live in the moment, to stop rushing and take time to smell the roses, which is definitely a change of pace for me but it is for the better. expomagazine

family connect Everyone knows what it’s like to move to a new area and have to start again – including making new connections and friends. Family Connect is an initiative that was formed with the aim of providing an network and opportunities for Sunshine Coast families to connect and build relationships, particularly those new to the Coast (however all are welcome). Running since October last year, Family Connect has grown to become an event that now hosts approximately 300 people. Partnering with Kids on the Coast magazine, they host a Picnic in the Park once a month for families from all over the Coast. Kids of all ages are entertained with fun games and activities, such as soccer and cricket, old fashioned egg and spoon or sack races or the odd obstacle course relay race. Special events have also been held in the past including face painting, drama activities, performances by Captain Rob (The Happy Pirate) and Queen Bee Pineapple. Organiser Julianne Jones says that the feedback from families who have attended has been extremely positive. “The kids love it and parents have a great time meeting others. It is always very relaxed and friendly.” The Picnic in the park will continue to be held every two months at the Lakefront Parklands at Brightwater, with the next on meeting on Sunday October 27. The program reaches families of all shapes and sizes including single parent, blended families, and those with special needs. It is designed to give Sunshine Coast families the opportunity to connect with other families, have fun, build relationships and support each other. Hopefully this wonderful program will continue to grow into the future, connecting more families with each other and providing important support and networking. INSPIRE PROGRAM

women connect Come along to Women Connect and do what we ladies do best – talk! A new initiative under the Inspire banner, Women Connect has been developed to allow women to connect on a purely social and personal level. Feedback to the Women’s Lifestyle Expo suggested that while there are many business networking opportunities for women on the Coast there was a shortage of places for women to just meet socially and connect and that is what Women Connect is all about.

Women of all ages are encouraged to come and make new friends or simply enjoy conversation and laughter over coffee. Women Connect hosts monthly coffee and chat nights at the Silva Kitchen, Kawana. While the program is only just up and running, the evenings are proving to be very popular, with some woman who have only been on the Coast a couple of weeks coming along to meet up to 40 other women who are attending. Women of all ages are encouraged to come and make new friends or simply enjoy conversation and laughter over coffee. The next coffee and chat night is on October 17 at 7:00pm. Women Connect also holds a special “Women’s Night Out” every few months for women to be spoilt, enjoy delicious food, special gifts and hear dynamic speakers. Their first Women’s Night Out enjoyed similar success and lots of fun was had by all who attended. The next Women’s Night Out is on Friday, November 22. If you don’t have a friend to go along with, that’s okay – come and make some new ones. That is what Women Connect is all about, networking and supporting women in the community. For more information contact Margaret Ting on 0413 648 811 or visit www.womenslifestyleexpo.com.au/women-connect or Women’s Lifestyle Expo page on Facebook to keep up to date with events.

the business of balance If Doctor David Hendrey ever decides to have a career change, I think he’d make an excellent juggler. He’s got great balance and seems to effortlessly juggle his busy diary. That’s no mean feat when you consider he’s a chiropractor, a triathlete, an author, a life coach, business owner and father.

His life has been very full from a very young age. Growing up in a house with four brothers and three sisters ensured he was always surrounded by lots of activity. “I was brought home from hospital on my brother’s 10th birthday and there were about 40 people in the house and it was like that virtually throughout my entire childhood,” David laughs. Amongst the happy memories are life lessons he says still resonate with him today. “I had a great support structure,” David remembers. “Both my parents were teachers and they believed education, activity and sport were more important than material things. We didn’t have lots of stuff but we had everything we needed and everything we wanted.” When he left the nest he studied chiropractics and went on to work overseas for almost a decade, with stints in Ireland, Scotland and England. “Across the globe we all have the same needs, wants and desires,” David explains. “We’re all faced with similar challenges - we’re working more and having less family time.”

“Every year I look at what I can contribute by pushing my mind and pushing my body. It’s really important to give back to the community.”

“When I started out, most of my clients came to me because of accidents or injuries but now most people’s ailments are stress or dietary related.” It comes as no surprise that David is a big believer in good nutrition and regular exercise. The surprising part comes when he humbly admits to making the top ten in the World Triathlon Championships of 2009. He insists on clarifying that he competed in the amateur category but in my mind there’s nothing amateur about tackling a 1500 metre swim, a 40 kilometre cycle and a 10 kilometre run in two hours and 12 seconds. “I’ve always loved pushing myself. One of the reasons I enjoy triathlons is because you compete against yourself, not the person next to you. You’re competing against the last distance you covered and trying to better your time.” Not all his sporting pursuits are isolating endeavours. For the past seven years he’s taken part in the Island Charity Swim, from Mudjimba beach around Old Woman Island and on to Mooloolaba. The swim helps raise funds for the Nambour and Currimundi Special Schools. “Every year I look at what I can contribute by pushing my mind and pushing my body. It’s really important to give back to the community.”

The local business community also benefits from David’s expertise. As a business consultant, he draws on his life coaching qualifications to help other health practitioners balance their businesses. “I like to see people succeed, whether it’s in their health or their business. It gives me fulfilment to help other people win.” I’m intrigued by the potential parallels between his role as a chiropractor and his efforts to help get people’s work life in alignment. “There are absolutely parallels between all the things I do, whether it’s my chiropractic work, my business consulting or my sport. All these endeavours have to have the right systems in place and they require dedication and time.” Speaking of time, in between running his Kawana chiropractic clinic, and a new wellness centre in Caloundra, he’s somehow made room in the diary to go back to university to take up an MBA in small business management. So maybe that job at the circus will have to wait. After all, this ringmaster is already an accomplished juggler.
