publisher’s note

T

he Champagne glasses are clinking this month (well, soda water in my case) in the Profile Magazine office as our December issue sees us hit a huge milestone … 50 inspiring issues! That’s 50 cover shoots, hundreds of inspiring stories on local people and possibly a tonne in deadline lollies … all in the quest to produce the Sunshine Coast’s best read. The team and I decided to celebrate our 50 th issue with a magazine full of young, up-and-coming women in business, and low and behold our issue is packed with a gorgeous gaggle of super intelligent and super glamorous women (and guys!). I guess it just goes to show you can have beauty and brains! Our region has spawned and nurtured many a successful offspring, including cover girl Celeste Brocksom. Raised while travelling the world and experiencing an enviable ‘rock ‘n’ roll’ lifestyle working backstage for a plethora of big name music acts, Celeste now calls the Sunshine Coast home. And with the help of a satellite system, Celeste and her business partner have developed a personal tracking device set to place her firmly on the global map. She is young, lively, worldly, immensely intelligent … and I must add, incredibly beautiful. Celeste is living proof that beauty and brains can go hand-in-hand. This beautiful issue also features home-grown actor and star of long-running soap series Neighbours, Ashleigh Brewer, who loves getting back to the beaches of Coolum when she can; all singing, all dancing sensation Britt Goodwin who has conquered Hollywood at the ripe age of 19, and fifth generation local glamour-girl Leah Osborne-Hassard, who has mixed her love of technology and fashion to create an innovative iPhone application that is attracting fashionistas the world over. With every new page you’ll find a new beautiful woman to inspire you. Of course, being December, it would be remiss of me not to mention Christmas. This year is extra special for my husband and I as it is our last Christmas before the arrival of ‘Baby G’, so we are making the most of our last months of being ‘just the two of us’ before it becomes the ‘three of us’. We headed off to the majestic Scenic Rim for a romantic break, aka a ‘babymoon.’ Probably our last in a while ... We hope you enjoy this month’s inspiring and downright gorgeous issue of Profile Magazine. And from our family to yours … Merry Christmas!

all i want for christmas yes, Christmas is just around the corner ... not long now until the man in the red suit arrives. Christmas means different things to different people and we all have our own traditions for the silly season. it’s all about spending precious time with family and friends (and enjoying a few pressies too!) Profile caught up with HOT 91.1FM’s Todd and Sami for their hilarious take on what’s on their “want” list this year. Merry Christmas everyone! sami and todd

ccording to my dad, John, there are four stages of Santa in our lives. The first is when we truly believe in Santa Claus. The second is when we don’t, the third phase is when we are Santa and the fourth is when we look like Santa and we’re hanging out at the shops. For me, I’m lucky to be in the third phase. I am Santa. Now before you hit the panic button and say, ‘But doesn’t Todd believe in the snazzily-dressed tubby bloke?’. The answer is a straight up Yes. Yes I believe in the season, I believe in its meaning and I’m bang up believing in the concept of celebrating Jesus’ birthday with presents and prawns and beers and ham and pudding and Champagne and roast pork and beach cricket. Yes I believe in Santa and all the good vibes he brings. We’ve always had one rule in our house, besides turn the light off in the bathroom when you’ve finished, oh and the don’t set fire to your sister’s dolls rule, I always say, ‘You have to believe to receive’. I reckon the best Christmas days Michelle and I have had have been as parents. Sure, financially times are tougher than working out a Tassie family tree. Sure, the old Widdicombe family budget is stretched tighter than Kenny Rogers’ new face. But hey, the look on the kids’ faces when they get up before the sun on Christmas day to find everything they’ve ever wanted under the tree is priceless. To see them jumping on the new trampoline that I was still building at midnight on Christmas Eve, (a seven-can job, by the way) brings a tear to my eye. So for me, this year all I want for Christmas is to cuddle my kids, eat six times my own body weight in rich, tasty delights, have a swim on Christmas morning at Mooloolaba and enjoy the company of my beautiful family. Oh, and if it’s not too much trouble, I’d love a monster truck too!

O

kay, so being a Libran and the world’s most indecisive female at the best of times, I have written two lists. Just indulge me. I think internally we all have two lists: the devil list and the good list. Let’s start with the devil list – the commercial pretties we really want but do not need. Please bring me a Louis Vuitton handbag in sky blue. It may not make me a better person but I will look damn fabulous. May I please also have new Peter Alexander pyjamas because they look so good on the skinny little models they just may flatter my curvy bottom. Can I also have a GHD hair thing to make my hair less like a bird nest? Oh yes, I most certainly need some serious diamond jewellery in the form of a tennis bracelet and matching diamond ring and two carat earrings? Can you also unstuff your stocking at my house and leave me a boob job so I too can have a chest as impressive as Miranda Kerr’s? Now for the good list. Dear Santa, please help all of my friends and family who are trying to conceive a baby. Please bless them with a baby and help heal their years of heartache. Please help all the hungry animals in the world. Please make us all want less stuff (like blue Louis Vuitton handbags) and help us just want to be better neighbours and nicer people. Please stop my obsession with Facebook so I will instead spend more time walking on the beach or playing dress-ups with my toddler or playing ball with my dog babies. Please bring a year of good health and happiness to everyone I love. Please allow my two babies to prosper and grow in their little minds and tiny bodies. Please let us have some more children if that is part of the grand plan. Please allow me even just a few minutes of adult time with my husband every day to tell him how much I love him. Please may I have time this year to plant flowers, cook more healthy food and sit with my family and friends and savour every bite. Merry Christmas everyone. May the year ahead be peaceful and joyous.

MEET LAURA profile: Have you always wanted to be a designer?

profile: What makes your designs different from others?

profile: Tell us about your current collection?

laura: Always! I could draw before I could talk. I love to be creative with anything. I have always been committed to entering the fashion industry. I was determined to put myself through a quality fashion design university and then undertook a no-pay internship for a high-end UK retailer. However, the experience was invaluable – designing for womenswear, menswear and childrenswear. I always remember the thrill when first seeing rows and rows of my designs in stores.

laura: The detail of the print and the strong but feminine lines. I consciously use psychology to help inform the designs and boost the wearer’s confidence. My prints are literally works of art and are all designed entirely by me in-house. We use opulent natural fabrics, which are metamorphosed into works of art. Unique, hand-drawn prints are a signature of the brand.

laura: My current collection has been inspired to some extent by the blues and hues of the coast. The azure of the sea and sky, which is of course abundant here, is very mood enhancing. I wanted to utilise the finest silks, not just for their feel and glamour, but also because practically the fabric is strong and cooling.

profile: Tell us a little about your background?

laura: Karen Millen has to be the main one – someone from my area and modest background who went to the same design university as me, and recently sold her eponymous label for an estimated $53 million.

laura: I was brought up in a very mixed cultural area of East London, which helped to instill diverse tastes and an appreciation of different influences.

When it comes to Australian icons, perennial Aussie soapie Neighbours is up there with the lamington and Vegemite! Now in its 28th year, it has been the training ground and launching pad for a string of world-famous actors and singers over the years such as Kylie Minogue, Delta Goodrem, Guy Pearce and Natalie Imbruglia, to name a few. Ingrid Nelson caught up with one of the newer generation of the iconic TV show, Ashleigh Brewer, and discovered what really goes on behind the scenes.

A

s Australia’s longest running television series, Neighbours is one of our biggest media exports, having been sold to more than 50 countries around the globe. In fact, it proved to be more popular in the UK than in Australia, with three million UK viewers tuning in to watch Scott and Charlene’s wedding (remember that?). So it’s no surprise when I arrived in Australia as a teenager during Neighbours’ heyday in the late 1980’s (when pop princess Kylie Minogue was cast as the infamous Charlene) that the first question from relatives in Ireland was, “Do you live near Ramsay Street?”. Seriously! Times have changed since then of course, and a whole new generation of neighbours are now residing in Australia’s infamous cul-de-sac, including talented Queensland actress Ashleigh Brewer, who plays young Kate Ramsay. Originally hailing from Brisbane, Ashleigh has strong Sunshine Coast connections and spent much of her childhood growing up in beautiful Coolum, where she continues to stay regularly at her family’s holiday home between filming. Chatting with me over the phone from the green room on Nunawading’s famous set (a suburb of Melbourne), Ashleigh candidly shared some of the behind the scenes action, revealing that although she wouldn’t trade her dream job for quids, life as a soapie actress is hard work and certainly not for the faint hearted!

For those with a passion to make acting their career, I would say keep studying and keep going to acting classes; try and picture yourself at the point you want to get to.” So where did her journey with acting begin? “I was about eight years old and I took a liking to being the centre of attention, so my parents channelled that by sending me to acting lessons! My drama teacher saw that I had a natural flair for acting and put me onto a very good agent, McMahon Management, when I was about 10 years old and I secured representation with them. That’s where it all began really. I did a couple of shows like The Sleepover Club and H2O and Blue Heelers and then the opportunity came up to audition for Neighbours. “It was perfect timing because I was finishing up year 12 and really had no plans beyond Christmas. I was busy doing exams and planning Schoolies and all the things you do at that time and then I found myself flying to Melbourne a couple of times for auditions with Neighbours. It really was a dream come true!” However, Ashleigh’s excitement was mixed with trepidation as the role meant a move away from family and friends in Brisbane to the big city lights of Melbourne, a daunting thought for any young girl fresh out of high school. “When I got the role it was such a whirlwind. I stayed with my agent and his family for a few months and then I moved out with a friend who was on the show at the time and was also from Queensland, so I had a good support network with people in the same situation as me. It was really, really hard to begin with, and to be honest, I feel like I have only found my feet after four years. But I am really glad I was pushed ashleigh brewer

celebrating 50 issues

into the move because it forced me to get my life and career going I guess.” So what is a typical day for a soap opera actress, I ask? “When I arrive, I dump my bags in the green room, and it’s off to wardrobe and then I sit in hair and make up for about an hour. Then I am at the mercy of Neighbours to do whatever they want me to do for 12 hours! It varies of course, depending on the storyline and how heavy the script is at the time, but filming goes for 12 hours a day and we film six episodes in that time. It’s the fastest running program in the world. “It is a very demanding job and exhausting at times. Sometimes my character can spend eight hours of the day crying! But the hardest thing is that

It is a very demanding job and exhausting at times. Sometimes my character can spend eight hours of the day crying!” it lacks routine which takes time to adapt to. You wake up in the morning and even though you have your whole schedule written down, it can be thrown out the window at the last second and any plans you had outside the show might have to be changed at the last moment. So it lacks stability, which can be draining, but you have to be able to run with that. It’s part and parcel of being an actor / actress.” With so many infamous names having pounded the pavement of the famous street before her, Ashleigh has her sights firmly set on following in their footsteps and is well on her way. “I committed to this industry at such a young age and I am committed to the idea of keeping it going. I am in it for the long-haul and as long as I am working I am happy. I am so grateful every day and I know it is something that I will look back in years to come and still appreciate.” Although Melbourne has become home to Ashleigh, she admits she still has a longing to be back in idyllic Coolum during the long, cold winters our southern neighbours endure. “I try and get back at least twice a year. I don’t get back as much as I would like to. You get to a point where it is hard moving back and forth and you have to commit to one place. I go to Coolum beach as much as I can. I absolutely love it. I basically grew up there. It was home away from home and any opportunity or long weekend we had we were there. I feel so spoilt. I can go to any other destination in the world but nothing else compares.” Having been on the show for almost four years, Ashleigh has quite a following and has already experienced some of the notoriety that goes hand-in-hand with being on the television screen each night. “It’s kind of funny. I will be walking through a shopping centre doing my boring food shopping and people just stare at me, which is hard to get used to. It’s not so much stardom, it’s more like people don’t know where they know your face from or think they know you somehow. Even I respond to the name Kate now, it’s just second nature,” she laughs. As a young actress lucky enough to land such a big break in what is notoriously a tough and cut-throat industry, Ashleigh says it’s all about keeping focused on your dreams. “For those with a passion to make acting their career, I would say keep studying and keep going to acting classes; try and picture yourself at the point you want to get to. You will get there if your focus is strong enough. I think that applies to any dream job actually, not just acting.” If Ashleigh’s success so far is anything to go by, this is one name to keep your eye on.

Talent, hard work, passion, determination and an unwavering belief in one’s self is often what it takes to make it in show business but the road is not an easy one, as Jessica Jane Sammut discovered when talking to rising star Britt Goodwin.

I

f I told you I knew a woman who was a certified Hollywood talent scout, who had represented Australia at the World Championships of Performing Arts (and brought home four silver medals and four bronze medals no-less), who had rubbed shoulders with the singing coach to Madonna and Michael Jackson as well as the choreographer of America’s most prestigious dance academy, and while doing all this, had run her own performing arts school, you might be forgiven for thinking she must be 104. I mean, to fit that all in, you’d have to be, right? Wrong. This young lady of whom I speak is a mere 19 years old. That’s right. Nineteen. When the rest of us were working out what to do with our lives, attending festivals and drinking alco-pops, this smart, astute, switched-on livewire was honing her talents and catapulting herself into the performing

14

arts stratosphere. Her career, now fully established, is already 100km long, and yet she is still at the very start of it. And if this is the start, then who knows where she will end up? Born in 1993 (that was yesterday, wasn’t it?) in Nambour, Britt Goodwin was a natural at singing and dancing from an early age. With her mother a vocal coach and actor, the arts felt like a familiar domain to Britt and by the time she was a three-year-old she had competed in her first eisteddfod, one of hundreds she would take part in in the future, knocking over seven to 10 a year for 15 years. “I used to perform in about 20 dances or songs in each eisteddfod,” Britt explains with a huge smile on her face. “Lyrical, contemporary, ballet, opera, musical theatre, classical; you name it, I did it!” But it was not an easy path for Britt who found that as she started school, it became preferable to keep her love of singing and dancing under wraps. I didn’t tell anyone at school about my love of performing arts as I didn’t want to be picked on. It was considered nerdy at school to be creative. At break time, when everyone used to run around and play sports, I just wanted to practise my dance routines. The pressure at school was to be good at sport. This was respected and this made you popular. Performing arts was laughed at. It was a challenging thing to grow up adoring. “Even amongst my fellow dance mates during dance classes I was bullied. Perhaps this was due to my ability. I used to get given parts over the girls and

I think the trick is to never stop learning. I am always wanting to improve and to strive for the next thing.”

they did not like it. One time I was even pushed into a wall by a girl and I twisted my ankle. My mum felt it too from other parents. I can only assume these people were jealous. It was very hard for me and certainly tested my commitment. However, it also made me more determined and at no time did I ever consider giving up or turning my back on my passion. My talent made me different which set me apart, but this also forced me to be resilient which ultimately was so important in pushing me forward.” And push her forward it did as Britt aced all her dance exams (amidst being an excellent student at school) and joined her mum running Goodwin Vocal Academy in Maroochydore when she was a mere 16 years old, which they then developed into Goodwin Performing Arts when Britt started teaching dance / choreography there. Not content with just being a business owner at 16, in February this year Britt underwent a stringent audition process to compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood where she had to demonstrate an extremely high level of attainment in all areas of singing and dancing. She was chosen out of thousands to represent Australia. “It was a huge audition process with much of it having to be submitted via video,” says Britt. “When I found out I had been selected to go forward I could not believe it. I was overwhelmed. After I had come back down to earth, I set about starting to raise the $7,000 I would need for my mum and I to travel to Hollywood to take part. I had three months to get the funds together, but I never doubted I could make it happen.” And make it happen she did. After her hard work fundraising, Britt found herself winging her way to LA in June to take part in WCOPA, and after a gruelling week of competitions she was awarded four silver medals, four bronze medals and given an official license to scout for WCOPA, when many far more experienced competitors returned home with nothing. “I went to Hollywood to prove myself and in doing so I felt truly validated. Not only did I win the awards at WCOPA, I was also given a taste of what it feels like to be surrounded by people like me – people who live and breathe performing and who celebrate it. It was very liberating.” Britt will return to Hollywood next year to undertake further master classes in dance at America’s top dancing academy, Millenium Dance, as well as to introduce further Australian talent to WCOPA, fulfilling every performer’s dream. Although she is still teaching here on the Coast, which she adores, she ultimately dreams of a future on Broadway, and after meeting this vibrant, confident, energetic, outgoing, talented girl, I have no doubt she will get there. “I think the trick is to never stop learning,” Britt explains, a young head on old shoulders. “I am always wanting to improve and to strive for the next thing. Even in your 60’s you should always be learning; you will never get to a stage when you know it all.” And it is exactly this attitude that has led Britt to where she is today. She has an ethic which means this young lady is not scared of hard work, of fighting for her passion and of what others think of her.

Ever had a “what the heck do I wear today” day? Haven’t we all? Thanks to fifth generation local Leah Osborne-Hassard, budding fashionistas (and even ordinary folk) can now turn to an iPhone app for inspiration and honest feedback. Alli Grant caught up with the style-conscious lawyer to learn more about My Social Stylist (and perhaps a few fashion tips in the process).

I

’m not what you would describe as fashion-forward. I’m certainly not overly trendy. I don’t covert the latest in super-cropped this or gold-studded that. Sure, I like to look nice and I have an interest in fashion and what’s “hot” at any given moment, but I’m not overly adventurous on the style front. Carrie Bradshaw I am not. I blame my budget (or lack thereof) for my unadventurous wardrobe, which is filled with chain store pretties rather than designer duds. And boy do I envy those ‘It’ girls who have the whole style thing going on in spades. Leah Osborne-Hassard is one such savvy fashionista. A fifth generation Buderim local (Jones Road was named after her great great grandfather), Leah is the epitome of style – she certainly has that ‘It’ factor. And not only does Leah rock her own unique look, one that she describes as changing as often as the wind (and friends describe as part edgy, part bohemian glamour), but she’s a clever little cookie to boot, managing to create a burgeoning little business out of her passion for fashion, with her best friend by her side. By day, Leah is a lawyer, and a well-dressed one at that. While she started her legal career on the Sunshine Coast many years ago in family law, Leah now calls the Harbour City home, although she does confess to missing her family, friends and dog terribly. So what did the former Buderim State School and Mountain Creek student want to be when she grew up? A serious lawyer or flamboyant fashionista? “I actually wanted to be a fashion designer – I always loved fashion. When I was in primary school I used to make friendship bracelets and bead rings and sell them to my friends. And when I was studying law in Brisbane I started my own fashion label, Hil de fay, and sold pieces through local boutiques.” So how did Leah end up in law? “I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a teenager so I ended up studying business at the University of the Sunshine Coast, and the only subject I really loved was law and ethics, so I became a solicitor.” After a stint on the Sunny Coast working in family law, Leah decided it was time to take her skills further afield, moving to London and becoming a practicing solicitor and training as an investigator with the FSA – the financial services regulator in the UK. It was in London in 2009 that Leah met fellow legal eagle and fashionista Ainslee Walton. The two quickly became inseparable, bonded not only by their love of the law but their similar obsession with style and fashion.

So I had this idea – what if there was an app where people could upload the photo and get honest advice from other people?” “Basically we had an instant connection – we both love fashion. We started hanging out as soon as we met, going out for drinks on Friday nights, catching up on weekends and going to fashion events. It was instantaneous. And we also joked that we had a ‘buddy crush’ on each other’s style.” In 2010, Leah returned to the Sunny Coast to get married and lay down her legal roots once more, but in early 2011 she was lured to Sydney to take on a role in the financial services industry. As luck would have it, Ainslee, who had also returned to Australia, helped Leah snag the job, so the two friends were reunited. While Leah and Ainslee work as full-time as lawyers and love every minute of it, they decided they wanted create a business venture together. In May of this year they launched their My Social Stylist (www.mysocialstylist.com) iPhone app and brand to amazing acclaim – they’ve pretty much been on every TV show in the country! I ask Leah where the idea came from for the fashion savvy app. And yes, I have downloaded it (it’s free – give it a try) and have had a play, although I’m a little scared to actually ask anyone what they think of my style for fear that someone will call the fashion police! “We used to send each other photos all of time of what we wanted to buy or were thinking of buying or wearing, and we found out that other friends were doing the same. So I had this idea – what if there was an app where people could upload the photo and get honest advice from other people? After researching we found that there was nothing like it in Australia, so we set about to develop such an app ... and tested it on family and friends to begin with.” Since the launch of the iPhone app, My Social Stylist has attracted attention from more than 50 countries, with 6000 members already – and this number is growing every day. The next step is to take the business from a fabulous app loved by fashionistas the world over to a successful business – generating revenue in the process. The app, which appeals primarily to women 15 to 30, can be used in several ways – you can upload a photo and ask for style advice, or you can be a stylist and give your advice to other fashion-forward types who are looking for guidance and feedback. Incidentally, you can rate someone’s style two ways – love it or leave it. Not only can you give advice or receive advice, there’s also a look book for people simply wanting to share their own unique outfits to inspire others. From here the duo certainly has big plans. “We’d like to see it branch out into a couple of different areas – maybe an online magazine and a clothing label. We certainly have goals, and it’s doing really well ... we achieved all we set out to achieve in 2012, although it has certainly been a lot of time and hard work to get it off the ground. It has been worth it in the end. I’m so lucky to have two passions – the law and fashion!” Before wrapping up our chat I ask Leah if you (read, me) can learn to be fashionable. “Fashion is about personal expression and having confidence in your style. You just have to learn how to dress for your body type, not necessarily just for trends, so whatever you wear suits you and enhances your best qualities!” As I finish writing Leah’s story the irony hits me. I had conducted our interview wearing old, faded cargo shorts teamed with a loose fitting red and white striped singlet (channeling Where’s Wally?) that I snapped up for the bargain price of $10. There’s not a lick of makeup on my face and my hair is tied back in a bun. I’m void of accessories. Oh, and of style. At this moment I realise a number of things. Firstly, I’m super glad it was a phone interview (and not Skype – eek) and secondly, that perhaps I’d better pick up my iPhone, log into My Social Stylist, nip onto the look book page and get learning. Thankfully, as Leah said, you’re never too old to develop an eye for style. Here’s hoping! december 2012

There is no doubt Gen Y and Z are streets ahead of their predecessors (Gen X) when it comes to technology. But are they smarter? Naturally, it’s a question that unleashes a floodgate of opinions, often prompting a generational divide. Ingrid Nelson recently caught up with a lively bunch of lads and ladies over a delicious lunch at Daisy’s Place to ponder the question and what she discovered might surprise you.

I

t’s no secret that the arrival of the digital age has changed our environment considerably to that of our forbearers. We now live in a world of entitlement, we are spoilt for choice, and frankly, we don’t stick around if something is not worth our while. Some would say this generation is far more demanding and narcissistic than its predecessors. With new fangled gadgets doing much of the thinking for them, are these tech-savvy youngsters less resilient and more reliant on technology to communicate? There are those who would argue that Gen Y, also known as the millennial generation, are not only more tech-savvy but smarter than generations before. They work smarter not harder, and being the first generation to grow up with a computer in their home, they have had to adapt to a rapidly changing digital landscape or risk getting left behind. I caught up with a group of savvy, successful local business people from different generations and discovered their thoughts on the subject. Needless to say, the results were interesting (and funny!). Co-hosting our lunch was the lovely Sandra Wills of Wealthways. Joining us was Hamish McMichael, owner of Kaizen Exercise Physiologists, Suzie Vella, owner of Cupcake Tea House Specialty Cakes, Roland Starr, owner / director of Pinnacle Insurance Services, Calli Burnett, photographer extraordinaire, and last but not least, Brett Barton of Ray White Business Sales. profile: Ladies and gents, do you think the younger generations (Gen Y and Z) are smarter? sandra: I think they are in some respects. I don’t december 2012

think it’s a question of intelligence so much but they are certainly streets ahead when it comes to networking and technology. The younger generation is fabulous. They are a lot less insular than my generation. The world is becoming a smaller place. hamish: I agree that 20-year-olds these days are far more tech-savvy but I’m not sure if they are smarter in so far as being able to communicate with people. These days, they will text message or use Facebook to communicate before picking up a telephone or physically meeting someone, looking them in the eye and shaking hands. They lack that people-to-people connection, it’s all done via a distance, behind a phone or computer screen. brett: Yes they are more tech-savvy but I think it has a lot to do with upbringing. As young children, my sister and I travelled a lot with my parents and we were taught good manners and how to relate to older people. The younger generation are great but they really have to step up when it comes to being able to communicate with people. That is still so important. calli: I think all the latest gadgets mean they don’t have to be as smart or have to think for themselves as much. My husband hurt himself recently and we weren’t sure what to do when my seven-yearold daughter Charlie said, ‘Just Google it, Dad!’. Anything you need to know now you can find instantly on your iPhone! hamish: That’s why I have the rule of no iPhones at my trivia nights! suzie: If you give kids a basic task these days they have no idea. They rely so much on gadgets. My 11-year-old daughter wants a phone! I said, ‘No way!’. I didn’t have a phone until I was 25 and it

was a brick. roland: Every generation is smarter than the previous one. The difference is that communication is so much faster. Everything is immediate. I have grandkids that can use their iPhone better than I can but as they get older will they be able to communicate effectively? I do over 50 per cent of my business over the phone or email now, it’s the way things are going. profile: What do you think are the drawbacks, if any, to the technology age? sandra: I think the younger generation are too reliant on technology and would not know what to do if their technology crashed. Could a Gen Y read a map without their iPhone or GPS? hamish: Back in 1985 we must have been better at organising ourselves and getting information across when we met people because we weren’t as available. If we were not organised, we couldn’t just send a text or message on Facebook but we survived. profile: We may be getting smarter but are we losing those basic skills like cooking and sewing, for example? hamish: They can’t even pull their pants up these days! It drives me up the wall. I can’t stand it. suzie: I think it depends if you have been brought up around those skills. Although I am a chef my kids don’t how to cook! brett: Kids are on the internet now and designing web pages rather than doing manual things. It is just part of evolution and everything being so computer-based these days. So yes, some skills are dying but then new ones that we never would have

and Facebook. It’s just the way it is now. We want to know what everyone is doing all of the time.

profile: What is life going to be like for those living 100 years from now? sandra: I don’t know if there are any Downtown Abbey fans here but that generation is our grandparents’ age. You are talking about the introduction of electricity and they couldn’t stand it, it was too bright! The last 100 years have been phenomenal. I can only imagine what the next 100 years going are going to be like. Although I am a bit of a sci-fi fan so I think we don’t have to look much further than science fiction. hamish: I think cars are going to fly! brett: Machines are going to overtake human beings and their capacity to compute. I think that is an interesting concept, computers getting smarter than humans!

profile: Any last thoughts, ladies and gents? roland: Being smart encompasses an ability to work with technology and to communicate verbally and physically with people. Evolution means that people are going to be smarter than the one [generation] before. It’s a matter of being able to manage that as you get older. suzie: It comes back to basics. We have to deal with technology. We have to embrace it and get on with life. hamish: I think there needs to be a balance. It is still really important to maintain that human contact with people. I don’t think today’s generation are smarter just different. sandra: I am a fan of Charles Darwin. I think evolution is inevitable, future generations will be smarter than previous ones. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. calli: I think our parents had this conversation when we were young when TV first came out. I’m not sure whether that makes people more or less smart, it’s just the way of the world. sandra: There is a downside of evolution. It used to be survival of the fittest, but now, with advancements in technology, are we breeding stupidity into our environment? Years ago if you were not smart you didn’t survive. Nowadays if you are not smart you can still be successful.

profile: Are future generations going to be able to communicate effectively face-to-face or is it a dying artform? sandra: I’m stunned at the communication network that my children have, not only with their peers but with older people they work with too. I think they are great communicators. brett: Technology is getting a bit out of hand though. My mum cracked it when the Olympics were on and all the athletes were face-down on their iPhones on Twitter and Facebook instead of swimming! calli: I hate when you are in company and everyone is sitting on their phone rather than having a discussion. hamish: I think the convenience of technology is great. But I also wish I could wind life back to 1985 sometimes. Things were just so much more simple. People seemed to mingle more and talk more. I think it is a dying art unfortunately. brett: They are not catching up with their mates, they are all sitting in their bedrooms. I think most people these days wake up and the first thing they do is check their emails and their phone messages

Interesting food for thought! However, after much debate, the general consensus among our lads and ladies was that while Gen Y might be adept at navigating a website or finding their way around social media tools, there are age-old skills that technology can never replace. Perhaps it’s not about being smarter but about combining the wonderful advancements of today’s technology with the experience and good old fashioned faceto-face people skills of our predecessors that make us the smarter generation?

DAISY’S PLACE, GLENVIEW The first thought that struck me as I stepped foot inside Daisy’s Place at Glenview was, ‘Why haven’t I been here before?’. Nestled amid the lush rainforest with a background orchestra of whipbirds, kookaburras and tranquil waterfalls, this oasis is the perfect venue for our lunching lads and ladies who were equally impressed by the lush surrounds and delectable decor. The chic urban indoor dining area opens through to a relaxed outdoor setting creating a unique dining ambience. Boasting a rich history in native folklore, most people would remember when the building was home to the iconic Rustic Cabin. Built in the 1920s by ‘Daisy’ Emma Johnson and her husband, the cabin served famous homemade pies and the best scones and sodas on the Sunshine Coast. Changing hands many times over the years, it was eventually bought by new owner Sue Joseph who began the venture and vision to rebuild in October 2010. Her focus and commitment has breathed new life into the old place. But Sue says,“There is still a lot of the old Daisy in Daisy’s Place.” Hence, the nod to her name for the restaurant. With Mediterranean-inspired, modern Australian cuisine, Daisy’s Place is a truly gastronomic experience. We began our lunch with grilled Turkish bread served with a selection of delicious dips – the perfect precursor to our mains. A wide selection of mouth-watering dishes vied for my attention including the seared Tasmanian salmon with Mediterranean salad, zesty herbed baked ricotta, wild rocket and salsa verde, and the Moroccan vegetable burger. But I couldn’t resist the wild mushroom risotto, and it didn’t disappoint. Make sure you leave room to indulge in one of the delectable desserts. My smashed pavlova with mango, elderflower cream, fresh seasonal fruits and house-made berry coulis was to die for. Great food, great setting, great service. 2859 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview 5494 5192 www.daisysplace.com.au

When Celeste Brocksom’s parents chose her name, little did they know she’d always have celestial connections. Celeste has worked backstage for some of the biggest stars on the planet, including Pink, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. Now with the help of a satellite system, she’s developed a personal tracking device that looks set to take her success into a whole new stratosphere, as Tonia Zemek discovered.

E

very summer I put my best foot forward. To be precise, my best foot is my right foot. It features a tattoo perched front and centre about midway between my big toe and little pinky. All through the warmer months, I sport an array of sandals and strappy heels designed to flaunt my tiny tattoo. Measuring just over an inch in length, it’s fairly small but just big enough to lend a funky edge to my otherwise conservative appearance. So when I first laid eyes on the arm of Celeste Brocksom, I knew I was out of my depth. You could say she’s gone out on a limb. Her arm has more ink than a biro factory. Intricate coloured patterns entwine with birds and cherries. Swirls and feathers crawl all the way from her cuff to her collar. It’s is either a work of art or the roadmap of her life’s journey. “I love the openness to be able to express yourself with stories on your skin,” Celeste says rather philosophically. She refers to her luscious limb as a “sleeve”, the term used by tattooists to describe a myriad of small tattoos covering the entire arm. The sleeve had its genesis just over a decade ago. At 18 years of age Celeste had a series of small stars tattooed on her arm in recognition of the celestial origins of her name. However, it’s the image of a nightingale that takes top spot as Celeste’s favourite tattoo. “Growing up, we spent every summer in Menorca which is a small island between Spain and Morocco.” Celeste says. “Houses there don’t have numbers, they have names. Our place was called Casa Ruiseñor which means the house of the nightingales.” december 2012

Celeste admits to being a bird lover and as I discover more about her it seems fitting that she relates to a species so committed to taking flight and exploring new lands. Born in Germany, Celeste was the only child of two professional dancers. She grew up travelling the world, accompanying her parents wherever they performed. “I learnt to be very adaptable and very accepting of other people,” Celeste says. “I grew up believing you should live and let live.” Celeste attended 12 schools in 12 years. Her string of classrooms stretched from Germany and Austria through to Italy and Czechoslovakia. “I think I was always the little troublemaker in class,” she laughs. “I could never really concentrate. I was too busy doing makeup on the other girls or interior designing the whole classroom without asking permission. I wasn’t used to being just another number for a teacher.” Looking back, Celeste distinctly remembers periods of skipping school, preferring to hang out backstage while her parents performed. “I pretty much grew up amongst the costume designers whilst my parents were on stage. Some days I’d sit in the props’ department or chat with the set designers.” I remark that her childhood sounds like a global education (she is fluent in English, Spanish and German) with plenty of extra-curricular activities. Celeste agrees and says she feels blessed to have experienced so much at such a young age. Moreover, she believes her early development provided a strong foundation for the woman she would become. “I think there’s a big difference between being street smart and book smart,” Celeste muses.

Immediately after finishing school, Celeste flew the nest and entered the workforce. Having always been surrounded by dancers, I am surprised to learn she didn’t join the profession. My shock is met with peals of laughter. “Let’s just say I was a very chubby child and a chubby child and a ballerina don’t really go together.” She landed her first job with a small Austrian television company. “I worked on their talk shows,” Celeste says. “I would pretty much help with everything, from arranging wardrobe to set design. Literally everyone helped with everything and that’s where I learnt to multi-task.” That foundation led to a long line of jobs freelancing in decorating, theming and set design. “I decorated nightclubs, private functions, weddings and VIP launches. My theatre work included everything from classical ballets through to cabaret shows.” Celeste continued traversing the globe, just as she had as a child. “If you want to work in the theatre you go where the jobs are, so it’s just a very natural process.” By her mid-20’s Celeste had her sights set on Australia, a place she’d visited and loved as a teenager. “I have literally travelled the globe and when I came to Australia I thought it was the most beautiful country in the world.” Shortly after settling in Sydney, she was snapped up by an events company. From there, Celeste worked on big budget productions at some of the city’s largest venues, like the Sydney Entertainment Centre. “Some people think everything happens on the stage but there is so much more going on backstage,” Celeste tells me conspiratorially. Her role involved theming and decorating backstage areas for touring VIPs. There are some pretty famous faces adorning her resume. Celeste tells me she worked backstage on shows for Pink, George Michael, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. Confidentiality agreements prevent her from saying too much about these experiences. So it’s true that what happens on tour really does stay on tour! Celeste’s fondest memories of that time include a stint working with American soul singer Al Green. “Before the show we would all eat together and pray together,” she says. “He’s very Christian and he really cared about his team. “After the last song he always made sure that we all got on stage to take a bow, which is very special because not many stars get us ‘backstage theatre rats’ to come on stage and bow. So that was one of the most heartwarming shows I’ve worked on.” Closer to home, Celeste has a soft spot for Australian comedian Carl Barron. She’s worked as a spotlight operator for several of his performances. “I think he’s the funniest guy in the world. He makes me laugh so much my stomach muscles get a workout.” Although it sounds like Celeste’s work life was full of variety and creativity, she was conscious to never lose sight of the bigger picture. “I have worked with very high profile people and sometimes you do get caught up in the glitz and the glamour and the fancy cars and all that stuff. “You get invited to VIP parties and you have access to special environments but it’s very important for me to keep a balance.” Once a year Celeste packs up and travels to an underprivileged corner of the globe. Most recently she’s visited poor villages in China and the Philippines.

“I literally have just my cargo pants, a shirt and a backpack and nothing else. I take no makeup, no phone, no high heels and I walk into underprivileged areas and hand out clothes, toothbrushes, medical kits, just anything I can do to help. I do this because I truly believe it makes me a better person.” Late last year this notion of self-improvement led her to further question her global contribution. “I wanted to do more for people than just entertain them through the theatre. Entertaining people is very important but I wanted to do more with my life. I got to a point where I wanted to create something special before I hit my 30’s.” At 28 years of age the clock was ticking. She told close friend Mark Korableff about her desire to bring about change in her own life and the lives of those around her. As if on cue, Mark was also dreaming of a new venture. Mark wanted to develop a global positioning system (GPS) specifically for suitcases. He inspired Celeste to take the idea a step further and develop a personal tracking device whereby people could be located at the touch of a button. In July, alongside Mark who is now her business partner, Celeste launched Connect2Locate (C2L) which is a personal tracking device contained in a slim palm-size box which easily fits in a pocket or handbag. Once a SIM card is inserted into the device, the C2L system works best alongside an iPhone installed with Google maps. Up to three different iPhone numbers can be linked to any one C2L device. Basically a person carrying C2L can press a button and, within minutes, their nominated iPhone user can pinpoint their exact location on Google maps. The device is fitted with an SOS button for emergencies and it can also be used for two-way communication just like a phone. “It’s a simple way for a caretaker or mother to know where their child is,” Celeste says. Although she’s not a parent, Celeste is very conscious of the dangers facing minors. “Having travelled and worked all over the globe, I know for a fact our world is not that safe. I truly believe this device is the future of independent security.” Celeste is also quick to point out that, in the case of abductions, attackers often take their victim’s phone. The C2L device looks fairly nondescript and may not be instantly recognised as a GPS and communicating device. Beyond personal security, C2L may also have benefits for the wider community. “I have a friend in Vienna whose father has extremely bad Alzheimer’s and he’s only in his early 60’s,” Celeste says. “She comes home everyday and has no idea where he is. Now with C2L she finally has some peace of mind. He just presses a button and she can easily locate him.” Quite literally, this device has the potential to put Celeste on the map. I praise her ingenuity and congratulate her on making what appears to be a giant leap from the world of theatre to the world of technology. However, she says one environment prepared her for the other. “Through my backstage work I have had quite a bit of experience with the technical aspects of sound and lighting,” she tells me. “It sounds bizarre, but if you buy a GPS and take it apart it’s actually quite simple. It makes celebrating 50 issues

Celeste recalls a recent meeting with a potential client with whom she’d previously only communicated via phone and email. “It was quite a funny moment when the client saw me walking into his office,” she giggles. “He sort of ignored me and kept working on his computer. I introduced myself and he just looked at me in shock. He didn’t expect me to be so young. He certainly hadn’t pictured this tattooed girl with skull earrings and a rockabilly outfit.”

It’s refreshing to meet someone who, at just 29, feels so comfortable in her own skin. To her credit, Celeste is not willing to compromise her personal creativity to conform to a corporate stereotype. I can’t see this gypsy girl moving to the corporate jungle any time soon. With an office in Marcoola and family in Peregian Springs, she says the Sunshine Coast makes an ideal home base. “It’s a very calming place. Here on the Coast I feel very connected to nature and of course my family.” She names her mother and stepfather as her best friends. Celeste served as their bridesmaid when they married three years ago. I suspect it’s time they take a bow as their little nightingale is set to soar.

Some people think everything happens on the stage but there is so much more going on backstage.”

LOCAL BUSINESS SUPPORT PROGRAMS AUSTRALIA’S SUNSHINE COAST

Sunshine Coast University Hospital The Sunshine Coast University Hospital is the largest project ever undertaken in our region. Council is working to ensure that local businesses have the opportunity to win work during the construction phase of the hospital and ongoing work once the hospital is operational. Works packages for the hospital are all being released through the ICN Gateway, an online tendering platform for major projects that links the builder to contractors and suppliers capable of doing the job or supplying the materials. It is not all about plumbers, electricians and concreters the building also needs people to supply services such as stationery, floor coverings, security, printing etc. Council has produced a video for businesses explaining how to register on the ICN Gateway, how to register interest in the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and how to receive support to upskill their processes and workers. www.business.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Business Connect Business Connect is a program that provides a subsidized advisory service, connecting local businesses to professional support in areas such as Strategic Accountancy, Legal, Town Planning and other services. This program is designed to assist business owners solve specific issues and to grow their established businesses within the Sunshine Coast region. Council links local business owners with professionals who have the skills and experience to deliver real outcomes. There is no time limit to the support provided as support depends on the circumstances of the business and the likelihood of successful outcomes.

Applications for support can be made through www.business.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au If Business Connect is not the solution, a range of other support services may be available. Professional Services Providers are all registered members of peak industry bodies and are located on the Sunshine Coast.

Business Partnering Local business owners need to remain competitive and have access to the latest business information to develop their skills and education and to stay abreast of relevant policy and legislation changes. With a clear knowledge of the diverse services available, Council acts as a link between local business and education initiatives. Business Partnering enables Council to support the delivery of information offerings by partnering with local businesses and organisations. Examples may be partnering with local Chambers of Commerce to provide speakers, venues or support, linking with other government agencies to deliver workshops to local businesses, partnering with local industry experts to provide training to other businesses, mentoring and other support services. Council is currently providing support to local businesses seeking to gain work on the Sunshine Coast University Hospital through workshops, information sessions, training support and linkages with industry participants. THE driver’s seat

Within the first 10 minutes of driving the Volvo XC60 out of Pacific Motorgroup I had a number of words racing through my mind to describe the absolute pleasure of the vehicle I was test driving – strong, safe, sexy and responsive. This car knows how to please! Before my test drive, Craig McPherson, dealer principal of Pacific Motorgroup, explained that often all a customer needs to do is take the Volvo for a drive and they are sold. I remained open-minded at that point. However, I am now absolutely converted. Hello Volvo!

So many automatic features in this vehicle make life so easy. A button for the handbrake and fuel filler. A button and dial for heated seats, climate control air-con, stereo, cruise control and use of Bluetooth connected phone. It also features a reverse camera and parking assist, automatic headlights and wipers and push-button-start with a nifty place for the key.

THE DE TA IL S •• Volvo XC60 D5 Polestar R-Design •• Volvo Navigation System •• Active Bending Lights

So what about children and luxury? Yes, I just wrote those two words together! After all, I am participating in a test drive of the “World’s Safest Car”!

•• Blind Spot Information System

•• All-wheel drive

As I pulled out on to the motorway, the power of this vehicle took me by surprise. With only a short delay, I was off and racing down the merge and within meters I was hitting 100km per hour.

My first assignment in the Volvo XC60 was to collect my three children from school. As my children are all in safety seats, I was considering the hassle of trying to fit my three car seats across the rear, towels down to protect the leather and then breaking up the fights over who has which seat. I was wrong! No need to swap my booster seats over as the Volvo has a two-height booster seat built in to the left and right hand sides. Perfect! My five-point harnessed seat was fitted into the middle position with ease. One major positive feature is where the anchor bolt is positioned so the car straps do not interfere with room in the cargo.

There is no question about the power and speed this vehicle can deliver. The XC60 is also remarkably quiet – no road noise, just the gentle hum of the engine.

The XC60 is a luxurious, fully automatic and powerful vehicle that is not only beautiful but very safe, smart and secure. A must to test drive. You’re right Craig – I’m sold!

I simply could not take my eyes off this sleek, stylish and good looking car parked in my driveway. There is something so alluring about its appearance. I felt a real sense of pride driving the XC60 around our Sunshine Coast streets. Visibility from the vehicle was perfect, there are no blind spots in this car. The SUV height added to my driving confidence too.

If you aren’t sure what Malaysian flavours are about, you need to try this recipe. It brilliantly showcases the use of a classic rempah or Malaysian spice and aromatic paste, and through it you will gain a great appreciation of how to build a foundation for a wonderfully fragrant curry. If you’ve ever found the idea of using any of these exotic ingredients intimidating, this recipe will allay your fears. Also, if you water the gravy down a little and eat it with rice or egg noodles it makes for a delicious alternative to a laksa.

prawn and pineapple curry

preparation time: 30 minutes cooking time: 30 minutes (serves: five to six) ingredients

Rempah (wet spice paste)

•• 1kg prawns de-shelled and cleaned or 650g of a firm-fleshed fish

•• 15 to 20 dried long red chillies*, deseeded**, soaked in boiling water until soft, drained and chopped

•• 300g red eschallots or Spanish onion, peeled and sliced

•• 2 ½ tsp belacan

•• 5 candlenuts or macadamia nuts

•• 3cm fresh galangal, peeled, sliced finely

•• 170ml vegetable oil

•• 500g pineapple, cut into 6mm triangles •• 500ml water •• 3 pieces dried tamarind •• 5 kaffir lime leaves •• 350ml coconut milk •• 2 to 3 tsp salt •• 3 tbs caster sugar •• 2 tbs lime juice for balancing

•• 3 large cloves garlic, peeled and halved

•• 4 stalks lemongrass (white part only), sliced finely (*Dried chillies – there are several types of dried chillies. For this recipe, please choose the type that are about finger-sized. The smaller ones are very hot and the broader, larger ones mild. Also please never replace dried chillies with fresh ones as they don’t impart the smokiness of flavour and depth of colour required for this dish. **Deseeding dried chillies – to easily deseed the dried chillies, cut them into quarter segments with scissors and drop them into a colander with large holes and then shake the seeds out.)

method Blitz all rempah ingredients in a blender until you achieve a fine paste. Heat rempah in a large, heavy-based saucepan or wok on medium heat and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring continuously until caramelised and fragrant. At this point the rempah should have turned a darker red and the oil will begin to separate from the rest of mixture. Add pineapple, water, tamarind, kaffir lime leaves and bring to boil, then reduce heat to simmer for another 10 minutes. Add coconut milk, salt and sugar and bring to boil, then add prawns / fish at very end to cook for five to 10 minutes or until cooked through. Taste just before serving. More salt, sugar or lime juice may be required to balance flavours at the end. Serve with steamed jasmine rice and wedges of cucumber just in case your lips need cooling! first bite cook

This is one woman who thrives on living life to the fullest. Kate has been working in the real estate industry for almost 10 years, involving herself with the property management division five days a fortnight. “I love negotiating and fixing things,” she enthuses. The remainder of her working week is spent working as an independent senior consultant with Intimo, providing women with comfortable yet fashionable lingerie – something Kate is clearly passionate about. While parties can be hosted with Intimo, Kate is a professionally-trained bra fitter who visits clients in the privacy of their own home. She has been working with the company for almost two years. hile Megan Meineke wasn’t born and bred on the Sunshine Coast, she’s certainly got a lot to offer the region. Heavily involved in many voluntary positions, Megan also has a large role to play in the smooth running of local school Sunshine Coast Grammar. It wasn’t an easy start for Megan, who was raised in South Africa until the age of 13. Her parents emigrated to Australia in 1998 to provide better opportunities for Megan and her four brothers, settling on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. “Moving to Australia meant leaving a lot of very close family members and friends behind. It was a challenging experience,” she says. Fortunately, Megan did settle into the comfortable lifestyle of the Sunshine Coast quite quickly. After studying a double degree at QUT in Brisbane in international business and marketing and creative industry media and communication, Megan went on to win a position at Fresh PR, where she worked as a public relations consultant. After taking a break from work to travel around Europe, Megan returned to take up a position as the marketing and communications manager at her old school. “It’s great working for Sunshine Coast Grammar because I already had lots of knowledge about the school. I get to look after all the publications, online

fittings to book,” Kate reveals. But it’s obvious that family is the most important element of Kate’s life. The birth of her now 12-year-old son Jayden and five-year-old daughter Hannah prompted her to put 100 per cent effort into creating a beautiful lifestyle for herself and her children. When she and her husband married on the Sunshine Coast four years ago, they knew they wanted to live here. Kate and her family finally moved to the Coast six months ago from Brisbane and haven’t looked back. “I wanted to make sure I created the same family lifestyle I was given as a child,” Kate explains. “My mum and dad have always been so supportive.” Kate has certainly reflected that support with her own children. “We always make time for family boardgame and card nights, visiting the beach and going away camping,” she says. Kate definitely revels in the busy walk of life she has chosen. When I ask her how she possibly manages her time so efficiently, she replies, “I plan absolutely everything! There are ‘to-do’ lists galore in my house.” Goes to show, anything is possible if you are passionate enough.

MEET CHRIS CHILDS THINK MONEY WEALTH THROUGH PROPERTY FOUNDER

Experience. There is no substitute for it in any successful business. Just ask Chris Childs, founder of Think Money Wealth Through Property. With more than 20 years’ experience under her belt in the financial planning, mortgage broking and wealth creation through property industries, Chris has helped countless people take charge of their finances and turn their lives around. More importantly, Chris has achieved success from her own personal experience, creating her winning system not from theories but from years of experience creating wealth through property herself. Having been a financial planner and mortgage broker for many years, Chris and her husband, Jack, bought their first investment property in 2000. The dynamic duo went on to buy, sell and renovate several properties over the next three years, but it wasn’t until they bought and kept an investment property that they started to see the real value of capital growth. In addition to accumulating a large property portfolio, Chris also opened three mortgage companies in three years and began to teach her clients her top tips and strategies on accumulating wealth through property – hence Think Money was born in 2007. “My mortgage broking clients, having been diligently learning my debt reduction strategies, wanted to learn more about how we were accumulating properties. So I began to teach some of my clients what to do and more importantly what not to do.”

‘Most mortgages can be paid out in five to seven years, just by doing your banking differently.’ Passionate about helping others achieve the same financial freedom she and her family has achieved, Chris now employs a team of professionals to assist clients to achieve their goals while avoiding the pitfalls most of us suffer when we begin the daunting property investment journey with little knowledge and experience. Chris says reducing your debt and accumulating property doesn’t have to impede your lifestyle.

“So … you really want to get ahead, create wealth through property and achieve your goals. This is when the fear factor usually sets in and the ‘it’s to good to be true’ hurdle stops you in your tracks … I know, it happened to me! “Can I just say, hold Chris’ hand and jump in, boots and all. I have been totally amazed at the results, the caring, the understanding and the reassurance that I have been shown through the journey! And yes, I called Chris at 10 o’clock at night and said, ‘Oh my God!’ What have we done? “But here we are, secure and happy and certainly on our journey of Wealth Through Property. So let me assure you – yes, it is true. Chris and the Think Money team are truly awesome, the events and their successful team of property people, finance brokers accountants and planners, to name a few, help complete the picture and work as your personal wealth team. “This is an opportunity I am so glad I didn’t miss.”

Sarah Education Client Since 2011

“As a teacher, I attend many workshops and presentations. The ones that make an impact on me are always short, sharp and colourful and the presenters passionate, knowledgeable and humorous. I attended one of Chris’ workshops after reading an article in Profile Magazine. She delivered all of the above in an engaging workshop that opened up the possibilities of property investment for me in simple layman’s terms. “Chris was able to cut through the usual financial jargon and give the nuts and bolts of property investment. For the first time I felt as if this was something I could feel confident about pursuing whilst making informed decisions. I would recommend Think Money to anyone who has toyed with the idea of stepping off the treadmill and making their money work for them.”

01

Safe as houses

There is a reason why “safe as houses” is a well-known saying: it’s true. According to research by AMP, Australian property has increased in value at a rate comparable to that of the share market since 1926 – an average of 11.4 per cent per annum, despite a succession of wars, disasters, recessions and crises. More importantly, it has done so without the volatility of the share market too. It’s a bricks and mortar investment, something you can touch and feel that can’t disappear.

02

Tax Breaks

There are huge benefits to having a tenant and the tax man pay off your investments for you. In some cases, even the most conservative property can turn into a cash flow positive wonder after tax breaks. Let’s look at a few. Depreciation One of the most underrated and overlooked tax benefits is depreciation. This works best when you buy or build a brand new property. Depreciation on a $500,000 property can vary between $10,000 and $25,000 per annum tax deduction, depending on the quality of fixtures and fittings. This costs you nothing and is like a gift from the government. It certainly makes the choice of buying new versus old almost obsolete. New usually wins hands-down! Claimable expenses

03

Secure growing income in retirement

Moving on from super to retirement, the biggest positive about investment property is that it continues to grow; therefore your income in retirement will grow. Most investments start to retract when you retire and start to live off the proceeds. With properties increasing in value, so does the rent, leading to long-term increasing income in retirement. The kids don’t miss out either. Property forms a huge wealth handover in estate planning. Property enables you to live well in retirement and still provide an estate for the security of your loved ones. All in all, property is one of the biggest wealth creators in Australia.

04

You can use leveragE

Using other people’s money to make you money is one of the biggest benefits of investing in property. Banks will lend up to 90 per cent of the value of a property, which means a $50,000 investment can change into a $500,000 investment. The great part of this is you will earn, in the above example, 11.4 per cent on the whole amount. For example: Eg $50,000 x 11.4 per cent = $5,700 $500,000 x 11.4 per cent =$57,000

05

Property is flexible – Investment styles

Using the right accountant can make a difference too. There are a number of things that could be claimed that are often overlooked, including stationery and computers to travel. It’s worth taking stock of Property is a remarkably flexible investment. No matter what your financial what is being claimed on your tax now – review this with your accountant aims are, you should be able to find an investment strategy to suit your to make sure you aren’t missing anything. needs. For example: Negative gearing

Long-term capital growth

Another gift from the government is the fact that if your investment is making a loss instead of a profit, the loss is considered tax deductible. That means if you are on 30 cents in the dollar you will get back 30 cents on every dollar you have paid tax on. It is important to note that negative gearing and the subsequent tax deduction should be considered a bonus, not the purpose of the investment, for two reasons. The first reason is that it isn’t worth throwing away $1 to get the 30 cents back. The second is that the government can change the rules at any time. So while you are building a property portfolio, treat the tax effectiveness as a bonus and always buy the best investment with the best growth potential, rather than trying to maximise tax benefits.

If you have time, it is the best way to build a retirement nest egg. Property has historically proven to deliver capital gain. Choosing the right area at the right time, with the right supply and demand ratio and demographics, can magnify your results. This forms an important part of property research.

Superannuation Self-managed super funds (SMSF) are becoming very popular. More and more people are taking control of their own superannuation because it gives them the ability not only to get more involved with their own investment choices, but also to invest in property due to the changes in legislation regarding borrowing within super. Until this option became available, most were stuck within the confines of managed funds and corporate super.

Positive cash flow By choosing properties where rents outweigh holding costs, you will have the ability to ‘hold’ more properties in your portfolio. However, this sometimes comes at the cost of higher risk and the possibility of volatility. It is important to look at all aspects of the investment and have plans in place to mitigate those risks should something change. Adding value There are many ways of adding value to a property to increase equity, therefore increasing the opportunity of buying more. Renovating, subdividing and changing the use of a property are just a few ways to do this. A word of caution – it is vital to do a feasibility study before buying the property. It is amazing how much these things actually cost, and often the sound of it is much better than the actual financial result.

‘While you are building a property portfolio, treat the tax effectiveness as a bonus and always buy the best investment with the best growth potential, rather than trying to maximise tax benefits.’

WEALTHY ‘N’ WISE

5 Reasons why property is a smart investment in 2013

WEALTHY ‘N’ WISE

The banks have so many different loans to choose from, then they go and give them weird and wonderful names to attract the unwary – Break-Free, Professional Package, Miser ... I could go on. The bottom line is that there are only four types of loans. Principal and interest and interest-only term loans (term meaning a set timeline from commencement to paying it off) are the two most common loans. Then there is a line of credit and more recently, a reverse mortgage. Reverse mortgages are for retired people and have been quite controversial. Lines of credit are my preferred loan, but some also say an interest-free term loan and offset account works just as well. Whichever your preference, I will explain each style of loan before getting onto the subject of fast debt reduction.

Principal and Interest loans These loans have repayments calculated to repay the loan in a set term. This mathematical calculation means a set number of payments will be made at a certain value over a set period. If the loan is set to be variable interest, the repayment amount can change as interest rates fluctuate. However, I have looked at many loan statements over the years and often find it a mystery how the numbers work. If you have a principal and interest loan – go and get your last two statements (they usually come every six months.) If it is at all possible, find two with the same interest rate … sorry, that could be hard. Call it a conspiracy theory, but now do the sums. Let’s use the example of a loan with an opening balance of $250,000 and an interest rate of 7 per cent. In this example the interest payment is $17,500 for the year. Now let’s look at the principal and interest monthly payment. Let’s say $2,200 per month which is $26,400 for the year. Doing the math, $26,400 less $17,500 should leave $8,900 as the amount of principal reduction. The loan balance at the end of that year should be $241,100 – less actually, considering you pay interest on a daily balance and the balance should have been going down. If your loan account balances, congratulations! If not … surprise! Haven’t found one that does yet, and no amount of wasted hours talking to various banks has provided me with a satisfactory answer. Therefore, I never recommend a principal and interest loan. A lot of smoke and mirrors – and I will leave it at that.

Interest-only loans With an interest-only loan, you get charged interest-only. Therefore, if you don’t pay any extra your loan balance will remain the same. Banks usually only allow this for a certain term, for example 5 or 10 years maximum, then it converts to principal and interest and it will be paid out by the end of the term, such as 25 or 30 years. This is a good safety net for those who are lazy about their debt reduction.

‘By doing your banking differently ... you can smash the years you take to pay your loan off and reduce the amount of interest paid.’

Interest-Only loans – benefits Clarity. Unlike the principal and interest loans previously described, the math always works. You can see it as clear as day. Your payment goes in, the interest comes out and all fees and charges are visible. Ease of debt reduction. Every extra dollar you pay into the loan comes off the principal, unlike a principal and interest loan, which seems to hold a month’s repayment somewhere in the unseen murkiness. If you have a principal and interest loan with a redraw facility try adding an extra $2,000 into the loan and see if it shows up in the available for redraw side. Sorry to sound cynical but I have been working in debt reduction for many years and see this happen time and time again. Benefits of affordability for investment loans.

Mortgage payments plus rates, insurance and other expenses minus rent gives you the holding costs or surplus – it’s either negatively or positively geared. Having interest-only assists with lowering the holding costs and enables you to afford your next property sooner – always good news! Not reducing the debt on investment properties is okay. Today’s dollars are the most expensive dollars. The value of

the dollar goes down every year due to inflation (sorry here comes some mortgage broker speak). When you are using a mortgage for investment purposes, it is often cheaper in the long-run to hold the property on an interest-only loan and concentrate on debt reduction on your own property. As the value of your investment property rises, the loan to value ratio will decrease, making it more and more affordable and easier to pay off later. For example, imagine you or your parents purchased a property in Brisbane in 1970 – you would have paid $12,000 for it. Sounds cheap! Should have bought 10, right? But an average income was $20 to $30 a week back then. Today the property would be worth more than $500,000 if you had paid interest-only until now – you would have a $500,000 property with a $12,000 mortgage.

These loans have their place if, and it is a big if, you get the timing right. However, normally only the banks win that game and they tend to work off the fear factor of their customers. Their actuaries can foresee where the interest rates are going and price their loans accordingly. It’s more about keeping you locked into their bank and giving the banks an idea about how many loans will be on their books for those terms. Most people don’t change their loans when they are in a fixed rate, even if there is a bigger benefit to changing. It is human nature to try to avoid a break cost or fee. Again, I’m not a fan of fixing unless you can guarantee that small – very small – window of opportunity so it will work for you instead of the bank.

MEET OUR FINANCE TEAM Think Finance Solutions specialises in teaching people to reduce their debt not their lifestyle and to take back control of their life.

Interest rates don’t matter When you do your banking properly, interest rates make very little difference to the length of time it takes to pay out your loans. It is interesting to see the calculations. Most interest is paid on loans that have lower interest rates but are treated as long-term debts and paid off per month, on time and with the amount the bank says you should pay. By doing your banking differently – for example using a line of credit and a credit card – even on a higher interest rate you can smash the years it takes to pay your loan off and reduce the amount of interest paid.

INVESTING IN THE SUNSHINE COAST, QLD Housing demand is only set to increase in Maroochydore and with an ageing population migrating to the coastal areas for retirement, these population pressures will see a deficit in housing, pushing prices and rents upwards. Developers are not catering for the expected growth from these economic drivers; rents are on the increase due the lack of new supply of rental accommodation. The Sunshine Coast University Hospital will inject more than $2 billion into the Sunshine Coast economy and will bring 11,000 construction jobs, 3,500 operational jobs for the public hospital, 1,000 operational jobs for the private hospital, and 15,000 people are expected to visit the hospital each day. It is estimated that the ripple effect will be 1.7 times the additional benefit ($3.5 billion in stimulus).

Jack Childs | 0418 794 512 | jack@QIBC.com.au When it comes to property investment, the Sunshine Coast has it all – a growing economy, fantastic business conditions and a highly-skilled workforce. In the past, investing in property on the Sunshine Coast has been more of a ‘lifestyle’ investment for most. However, due to a population explosion and increased interest from sea-changing baby boomers, there is great pressure on the housing market. There has never been a better time to invest in property on the Sunshine Coast.

The Sunshine Coast Airport has a planned expansion to cater for population growth, growth in regional tourism and business. This will result in 5,000 new jobs and an injection of around $1.6 billion in regional economic benefit between 2015 and 2050. True North Apartments, due for completion early next year, are another attraction to the Sunshine Coast. The environmentallyfriendly boutique development of 15 apartments located in a prime position adjacent to the Maroochydore CBD is conveniently close to restaurants, shops, schools and employment and will incorporate exciting green initiatives without the hefty price tag.

INCOMPARABLE VALUE FOR MONEY

True North Apartments offer 15 chic, executive-style, eco friendly apartments, right in the new heart of Maroochydore, at Sunshine Cove. Completion 2013. • Cutting edge architecturally-designed open plan apartments with an eco-friendly edge • True North facing aspect, high ceilings and cross ventilation, great comfortable living • Ground level apartments boast expansive courtyards, pet friendly options available! • Middle level apartments offer elevated grand size balconies, at an economic price point • Top level apartments feature a mezzanine suitable for home office or an extra media room • Low body corporate fees and low maintenance lifestyle due to sustainable initiatives MAROOCHYDORE PRIMARY SCHOOL MAROOCHYDORE HIGH SCHOOL

INVESTING IN CHINCHILLA, SURAT BASIN, QLD Chinchilla is in the middle of a housing boom that developers say is a once-in-a-lifetime and a once-only opportunity that will see the population of the town double within the next five years. Chinchilla presents a unique opportunity to invest in quality residential property, and more importantly, in a mining town just 300km west of Brisbane in the centre of Australia’s fastest growing mining region – the Surat Basin. The town itself is literally in the ‘heart of the Surat Basin’ and although it’s just a small town with approximately 8,000 residents, it is experiencing never-before-seen growth as a result of the resource boom in the area. Chinchilla is being linked by rail and a direct pipeline to the Port of Gladstone from where resources can be exported to countries like China, who have signed major deals to take resources mined from Chinchilla and the Surat Basin. There are 40 major infrastructure projects underway, committed or proposed in the Surat Basin, with an estimated value close to $200 billion. Eighty per cent of these projects are just beginning and have life-spans estimated at between 50 and 250 years (so this is a boom with no bust). These projects are within one hour’s drive of the town of Chinchilla and mining and energy companies require their staff to live within one hour of their worksite. The region is not reliant on one particular industry (unlike other areas) meaning security for investors. The major industries driving

the boom are gas, coal, power, solar, coal seam gas, water, liquefied natural gas (LNG) agriculture, manufacturing and rail.

‘... although just a small town with approximately 8,000 residents, it is experiencing never-before-seen growth as a result of the resource boom in the area.’ It’s not just the 40 major projects and $200 billion that impacts housing demands, it’s the flow-on effect of support service adding to the list of those needing housing. It is expected that 42,000 new workers will be required to service the region. The annual growth in median house prices in Chinchilla has averaged an incredible 16 per cent over the past 10 years. A great investment opportunity is the newly constructed and fully furnished townhouses at Canaga Court in Chinchilla. With executive fittings and furnishings throughout, these townhouses will achieve a rental return of $750 per week. They are currently under a 2-year lease to Link Energy with a 5% rental increase every 6 months. Centrally located these town houses are minutes from the IGA Centre, 2 primary schools, the brand new Woolworths and close to the New McDonalds coming in 2013.

7 Heaven is a very apt name for Aimee Watkin’s beautiful day spa, because that’s exactly where you will be transported when you step foot inside the luxurious rooms of her state-of-the-art salon in the heart of Warana. Ingrid Nelson caught up with the self-confessed “Girly girl” and discovered how the Sunshine Coast Regional Council is helping this North Arm mother-of-two to promote her business for a more sustainable future. th

xperienced beauty therapist Aimee Watkins shines when speaking of her passion for the beauty industry, a profession she says she was born to do. Growing up in a household with one sister and no brothers, Aimee confesses her mum and sister were her guinea pigs for many years. “I was always annoying my mum and sister and friends to do their makeup and nails and facials. I have loved it as long as I can remember,” says Aimee. “My mum was my biggest fan, she could see I had a real talent for it and got me into beauty college straight after leaving high school. It was the best thing I could have done.” An entrepreneur at heart, at just 18 years of age Aimee started her own business, renting space from a hair salon for three years before moving into her own premises in Mooloolaba where she remained for 12 years, garnering a wealth of experience and skills along the way. Two years ago, she and husband Garrett relocated to their dream salon at Warana, where they are working hard to grow and nurture their business to reach its full potential. “It really is my dream salon. The most common reaction from clients when they walk in is ‘Wow!’. The atmosphere is incredible as is the view. I have always offered top-quality professional service, now I have an immaculate salon that takes your breath away, so it’s a great combination. It is a great feeling to do your job well and love where you work.” The vast array of treatments available at 7th Heaven Day Spa & Hair is testament to Aimee’s years of experience. Utilising the latest techniques, the day spa offers just about every treatment you can imagine, including dermabrasion, photo rejuvenation, IPL tattoo and hair removal. “I am trying to offer even more, so clients have everything they need under one roof. I currently have two spare treatment rooms available to rent to professional therapists who are passionate about working alongside me in reflexology, nutrition, acupuncture, and even a psychologist for womens’ issues.” When she is not working, Aimee loves nothing more than spending time at her North Arm home with husband, Garrett, and sons, Hank, five, and Hayden, two-and-a-half. “I am a country girl at heart. I love the farm life and being amongst the trees with some space to breath.” Aimee is quick to point out the tremendous help she has had from Garrett and says the salon would not be where it is without his tireless efforts. “My lovely husband of nine years is wonderful and supports me so much. He does have his own business but he is mainly home with the kids, grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning and running the household. He has a marketing background too and helps me a lot with that side of things.” Luckily for Aimee and other local business owners, Geoff Peters and Ed Gainer from the Sunshine Coast Council Economic Development Unit are right behind them offering fantastic programs like Business Connect, Business Partnering and Business Ezy. “Council has connected me with an excellent mentor, Sandy Riba from Ribakasteel, who is helping me with the accounting side of things and Geoff is helping me with marketing and cash flow and helping me to grow my business for a better future.” Aimee is working with Council and other professionals as part of a case study into the importance of social media for business. “I have talked to a lot of other business owners who are finding these times challenging and I have been telling them about Council and encouraging them not to be afraid to put their hand up and ask for help. The worst thing you can do is put your head in the sand and be quiet about it.” Aimee says it’s imperative to remain positive in small business during tough economic times and important to remember there is always light at the end of the tunnel. “Enlist any help you can and be involved with others who are like-minded. Stay positive, even though it’s hard at times. Surround yourself with other positive people who are supporting you and pushing you and guiding you in the right direction.” With a can-do attitude like that, I have no doubt Aimee’s business will be making Sunshine Coasters beautiful for many years to come! celebrating 50 issues

Shelley Keighley

A

s its name suggests, Simply Pies used to be the name synonymous with pies on the Sunshine Coast. But like many local small businesses, its owners simply had to come up with strategic ways of diversifying their business to compete in the current economic climate. Simply Pies first took off on the Sunshine Coast in 1995 when Shelley Keighley’s father, Keith, bought two stores in Coolum. Originally only selling pies, the business then moved into producing bread and cakes. However, they are now looking to re-establish themselves on the Sunshine Coast and go back to where they started – making great pies. “It will be 17 years this year since we started Simply Pies at Cotton Tree, then we moved to our bakehouse at Kunda Park. Out there we were doing bread, cakes, pies and everything, then we sold the cake side because we want to go back to where it all began – to our core business of making pies,” says Shelly. “We were the name that everybody thought of when they thought of pies and we just want to let everybody on the Coast know we are still here, still going strong.” This is where the Sunshine Coast Regional Council has been able to assist their business, through their new economic development plan for helping and promoting small local businesses. In partnership with the Council, Simply Pies will implement various strategies to market themselves better on the Sunshine Coast to reach more businesses as well as making their new mobile food van available for fundraising and use by community groups at local events such as football grand finals, music festivals and school fetes. Since contacting Council, Shelley says she has been genuinely surprised by the response to her concerns and the proactive action taken by the local council and other government bodies over the past few months. “I read an article in a business magazine about Council helping a local

business and outlining their new program. I just rang out of the blue and asked for help to rebrand ourselves on the Coast. “They have been really great. I was surprised at how quickly they got back to us when we rang initially.” Passionate about supporting and promoting small business on the Sunshine Coast, Shelly says there has never been a better time for locals to help each other. “We are very big supporters of local business. We use a local vegetable processor from Noosa, we use local packaging people from around the corner, we use the local the butcher from Caloundra – everything we can we get local, we do. “It would be lovely to see all businesses support local businesses as much as we do and Council is now backing that up with the new University Hospital where they are utilising local suppliers and local contractors.” Shelly’s aim is to grow the business to employ more local staff. And with opportunities for vendors to buy product from them and distribute to other business and school clubs there is certainly plenty of room to grow.

Let’s do something to turn it around

and make a big go of it.” “The growth of our business just means there will be more jobs for other people and that’s what Council is trying to do right now. “This was the year that everybody in small business felt the strain. We just thought, ‘Let’s do something to turn it around and make a big go of it’.” With such a positive outlook, things are certainly looking up for this local trusted business.

With a baby soon on its way, Genine Howard takes time out for a romantic and blissful ‘babymoon’ retreat to the Scenic Rim and finds a gastronomic lovers’ delight at the luxurious Spicers Peak Lodge. ll words genine howard

M

y life is about to change … forever. I mean that in a positive sense – but, as all new parents know (and I am guessing!), there will be no going back to my former life as one half of a DINK (double income, no kids) couple. From now on it will be sleep routines, nappy changing, sleepless nights, mothers’ groups and an unkempt house … a far cry from our current lifestyle of soirees, travel, Champagne and deadlines. And with this impending ‘new’ life, I am embracing the growing trend of a ‘babymoon’ and my husband and I are on our way to the ultra-luxurious mountain retreat, Spicers Peak Lodge. As we turn off the Cunningham Highway, we are greeted by a 12km climb through farmland and stunning bushland. We drive carefully and slowly, taking in the scenery and smells of the Australian bush and stopping frequently to snap photos of curious bush creatures including wallabies, lizards, brightly-coloured rosellas and scarlet finches – each bend in the road more scenic than the last. All the while slowly winding down from our busy lives. As we reach the top of the mountain the land plateaus out before us, revealing the majestic Spicers Peak Lodge nestled amid rolling pastures dotted with curious cows that lazily move out of our way. On arrival we are greeted by the staff, handed a refreshing drink and ushered inside to take in the lodge’s beauty. We are instantly transported to another world – a world where nothing is too much hassle and everything is included in the price – hooray!

Rowan and I take the time to sit and relax. Taking in our surroundings, we could snuggle up with a good book on the plump couches, take in a game of billiards or head off on one of the many bushwalks or bike rides … clearly not high on my 30-week pregnancy agenda. We opt for relaxation, and after checking into our cosy lodge room, complete with fireplace and spa, we both settle into armchairs and nose our way through the bookshelf – me with a soda in hand, Rowan with a crisp G&T. With the afternoon stretched out before us, we head to the wet-edge swimming pool for a dip, and frighten a local fox from its hiding spot in the bushes in the process. Nature is only ever a footstep away here at Spicers, and sprawled out before us we are treated to majestic views of the Great Dividing and Main Ranges. The afternoon is sultry with the hint of a storm on its way – we secretly hope the storm comes rolling in so we can make use of the fireplace in our room. Soon it is time for pre-dinner canapés – a nightly affair in the main lodge. We are surprised (and thrilled) to learn that we are the only guests for the evening so the staff move a dining table into the lounge, just for us. How positively romantic our ‘babymoon’ is turning out to be! Dinner is a gastronomic affair – we tuck into a seven-course degustation dinner, each dish more delicious than the last. The chefs are mindful of my pregnancy and modify each meal to suit – no raw dishes and just a taste of the accompanying wines (one of the few drawbacks of being pregnant). We dine on local pork belly, braised quail legs, succulent Kingfish and orange blossom meringue. I am very happy I am eating for two! We head off to our luxurious lodge suite feeling relaxed and sated and plunge into a cloud of pillows for a restful slumber while listening to the

crackle of our stone fireplace. Good night! A little like a happy dream, we are woken in the morning by the mooing of cows and head outside to our private deck to watch the herd graze contentedly while the calves frolic around their mothers. A fresh wind has come up from the valley, signalling a storm brewing from the west. I am quite happy for the storm to roll on in as I’m looking for an excuse to continue to do nothing. Breakfast is another gastronomic affair with a selection of homemade delights such as crumpets (minus the honey for me), fresh pastries, granola with local yoghurt and a fully-cooked meal. We both greedily tuck into the spread thinking that our babymoon is more about the food than anything else, though the spa menu looks extremely tempting with its Blissful Babymoon treatment – an hour and a half of nurturing massage using specific prenatal essential oils followed by a Petite Facial. They even recommend dad-to-be gets in on the action with a Lemongrass Escape massage. I knew Rowan wouldn’t disagree. So, with our tummies full and fog rolling in over the mountains, I guess there is nothing left for us to do before we head back to reality but to indulge … Spa Anise, here we come.

advice

shape up with Daniella Saville Hair stylists know that the perfect haircut and colour placement must take into consideration the shape of the client’s face. This is one of the reasons why customers who want a haircut and style like their favourite celebrity are often disappointed with the results. Here are some tips on what styles work best for different shaped faces. Heart-Shaped Faces (Jennifer Lopez, Jayma Mays, Dianna Agron and Kerry Washington) Heart-shaped faces tend to have a pointed chin and a wider forehead. Long, side-swept bangs are a great look because they will draw attention down to the eyes and cheekbones. If you have short hair, keep your layers long and soft. Long-haired ladies should keep their layers right at the cheekbones. A chin-length bob with tapered ends is an excellent style for this face type. Avoid: Don’t wear harsh or choppy layers if you have a heart-shaped face. Also, short and choppy bangs are usually a no-no.

Oval-Shaped Faces (Jennifer Aniston, Megan Fox, Kate Hudson and Emma Watson) As a gal with an oval-shaped face, you really have all the freedom in the world when it comes to haircuts and colors. An oval-shaped face is very versatile. This includes cuts ranging from a long and wavy ‘do’, to a super short and sophisticated bob. It just depends on your best feature. Avoid: Maintaining a hairstyle that was in years ago. If you haven’t changed your hairstyle for a while, head to the salon and pick out a new style. A bad hairstyle can age you by 10 years. Square-Shaped Faces (Angelina Jolie, Maria Menounos, Cate Blanchett and Taraji P Henson) If you have a square face, that means you probably have a strong and detailed jaw line. Long and sleek hairstyles can downplay those strong features. Complement your cut with curled or choppy ends, and you will have a great fit. Short and spiky cuts are not out of the question either. Just be sure your bangs are angled towards your jaw line to make it appear softer.

Avoid: One-length bobs are not recommended. Also, avoid putting your hair into a tight ponytail or bun, that will only highlight your facial features. Round-Shaped Faces (Catherine Zeta Jones, Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone and Selena Gomez) If you have a round face, it’s best to make it appear leaner and longer. To accomplish that effect, make sure your hair comes down just past your chin. Complement the cut with some soft layers and tapered ends. If you’re going to have a fringe, be sure it is long or side-swept. Avoid: Blunt-cuts and curly short hair is not recommended for women with round faces. planning for a baby – the medical perspective The wish to have a baby is one of life’s major drives. Falling pregnant is usually a most natural, spontaneous and beautiful event. However, it is a major step to take, particularly with our contemporary, fast-paced lifestyle, so it is wise to plan it carefully.

Eating right, avoiding being underweight or overweight, drinking plenty of water and doing gentle and regular exercise will go a long way towards getting your body in shape long before conception. Managing stress before it gets out of control is also essential.

Nowadays, most women use contraception until they are ready to start a family and many delay the process until they have met the right partner, achieved their career goals or are financially independent. While the overwhelming majority of couples have no problem falling pregnant, one in six will have some difficulty. Infertility has become an increasing concern, and there are many potential factors involved.

Age is an important factor too. Both men and women are most fertile between the ages of 20 and 30, after that fertility starts to rapidly decline. Don’t postpone too long, unless you want to start visiting an IVF unit.

This is why the concept of pre-pregnancy counselling has become increasingly appealing. It is a good idea to have an awareness of one’s ‘fertility potential’ sooner rather than later. Make sure you have the required support, choose your partner carefully, know your family history and plan for private health insurance if possible. It is also important to adopt a healthy lifestyle and avoid the ‘nasties’ – smoking, drinking excessively, minimise caffeine intake and say no to drugs.

Have your health checked regularly. Don’t just assume that all is fine and hope for the best. Check for sexually transmitted diseases and have regular PAP smears and vaccinations, talk to your doctor about different ailments and concerns, food allergies, genetic risks and past illnesses. Allow two to three months after stopping contraception, especially hormonal, before trying actively to fall pregnant. This will give the body a chance to readjust naturally. Start taking a multivitamin for a month or two, with attention to iron intake, iodine and folic acid.

cervical mucus or temperature, the use of an ovulation kit and timed intercourse are easy to learn and very helpful methods to overcome minor problems. If all natural methods fail, the fertility specialist awaits you with a bag full of tools and tricks to assist. Overall, adopting a positive but proactive attitude, staying relaxed but aware, keeping your body and mind healthy, de-stressing, and last but not least, remembering to have fun on the journey will lead to a positive pregnancy test sooner. early detection saves lives with Marcia Beaumont Did you know that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime? The number is staggering. Early and accurate detection is vital and can save your life. There are two approaches a woman can take. One is to approach life avoiding the possibility of finding out they may have a serious disease and the other is to use modern technology to detect the deadly disease in its early stages. Annual mammograms, self examinations and clinical exams are the best tools available for early detection of breast cancer. Imaging the breasts improves a physician’s ability to detect small tumours. When cancers are small, women have more treatment options and a higher treatment rate success. Regular mammography, though not perfect, is the best clinical method available for early detection of breast cancer.

A mammogram is an X-ray that uses a very low dose X-ray system for examination of the breast. Most medical experts agree that successful treatment of breast cancer is linked to early detection. A mammogram can detect changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician. The addition of breast ultrasound increases the sensitivity and specificity of breast examination by up to 30 per cent. The majority of breast cancer experts recommend mammography once a year, beginning at age 40. This has shown to reduce breast cancer mortality.

Find out why Anxiety, Nervousness, and Panic Attacks happen to you and how to overcome it! Do you wake in the morning feeling anxious for no apparent reason? Do you find yourself with panic overwhelming you through the day when nothing is planned? You might feel nervous about going to work or when the phone rings, when there’s nothing to be worried about. This can go on for months or years, and will cause debilitating emotions, reducing your ability to work, and cause relationship problems at home. There are a number of underlying causes that contribute to symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and poor concentration can also occur. Even though it seems psychological, and you may have issues in your life contributing to it, there are two very common physical problems that cause your symptoms to feel more extreme than they should feel. These affect the nervous system, causing your fight / flight response to over-react. A malicious infection has been found to be a contributing factor in up to 90 per cent of tested patients. It’s picked up from

december 2012

overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is only detected in specialised testing. This infection releases a toxin affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It’s not often been associated with mental health, though studies show its impact on the brain. It’s passed on very easily, so more than one person in a household may suffer from similar symptoms. You will also find some people can carry this infection with no symptoms whatsoever, as it seems to act when there are other health or stress-related problems. Often we’re able to correlate the first sign of symptoms, coinciding with a stomach bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. It’s passed on quite easily through schools, daycare centres, or places of work. It’s quite easy to treat, when done properly, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. Infections are just one part of a seven-step process for permanently treating anxiety and other mental health conditions. These steps have been proven with testing to improve the brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication.

hen mother of two Frances Cahill set about seeking a drama school for her teenage son on the Sunshine Coast and couldn’t find one that suited their needs, she decided to launch her own! Under the reputable umbrella of Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, one of the most trusted names in drama education, Frances says she is excited to be launching the Academy on the Coast and promoting the importance of drama as a valuable part in the education of children. Passionate about the development of social skills and confidence in young people through a drama-based program, Frances says the Helen O’Grady vision is to culture the expression of individuality while having fun and building self-esteem at the same time. Students learn to speak out clearly, relate confidently and develop social skills for life. The program is an excellent opportunity to increase creativity, confidence and communication skills in all students. “We see our role as a valuable educational support for growth in children and most of all it’s fun for them and us,” says Frances. Boasting a strong and acclaimed history, Helen O’Grady Drama Academy began in Australia in 1979 and the acclaimed self-development drama program now reaches over 60,000 students in 28 countries. Over one million children have been through the program over the past 30 years. Weekly classes of one hour are held during the school term. Catering for lower primary, upper primary and youth theatre, the comprehensive program is designed to keep pace with children throughout their school years and content is updated each year to ensure students are always covering new material. Aimed at students from age five to 17 and encompassing a huge body of developmental drama, the programs are designed to empower students, increase energy and enthusiasm, encourage listening and conversational skills, stimulate 64

creativity and concentration and provide a solid platform for success in performing arts. There are four terms in the Academy year, running in line with the school term. However, students may join at most times during the year. Frances is busy seeking rehearsal studios in the region and canvassing highly-trained and suitably qualified teachers to support the growth of the Academy.

We see our role as a valuable educational support for growth in children and most of all it’s fun for them and us.” “We are hoping to have studios at Caloundra, Maleny, Mooloolaba and other locations and we would love to have our programs supported by local schools.” Having returned to Brisbane from many years living interstate, Frances says she is delighted to be re-locating to the Sunshine Coast with her family of two teenagers (and two cats). “The Sunshine Coast was the major stomping ground of my chequered youth and I am really looking forward to establishing new networks and reviving old ones.”

debt consolidation loans with Laurie Clarke A very common type of loan application is for debt consolidation. This can be either as an unsecured personal loan or a top-up to someone’s home loan. In a generally tighter lending climate they are not always easy or successful, so here’s a banker’s perspective. Applicants need to be realistic – even though there is logic about the consolidation loan improving the affordability of monthly repayments, the lender won’t necessarily see it as simply as that. And with flat property prices currently on the Coast, there isn’t necessarily increased value in the security for an equity loan. The motivation to consolidate debt is usually to reduce the monthly fixed repayment. Also to make the situation easier to manage – up to five or more monthly payments to remember can become a complex and demoralising juggling act. While individual lenders may have been willing to provide loans of say $5,000 to $10,000, it’s a different story when asking a single lender to take on an unsecured risk of $20,000 to $30,000.

The risk is relatively high when someone has accumulated this much debt and often not much in the way of tangible assets behind them. Ways to improve your chances of approval include being able to demonstrate a good repayment record. If loan statements are not available, lenders will still need to review six months’ repayment history – commonly from bank statements, showing the payments being made. If the applicant’s balance sheet isn’t strong a family member in a good financial position may be willing to provide support with a guarantee. Not an easy thing to ask for as it is a big risk for the guarantor, but can make the application more viable. People shouldn’t be discouraged if the application is not successful. It just means the path back to financial freedom will take a bit longer. A good lender will offer some advice about options and strategies based on each applicant’s current circumstances. I am not a budgeting expert but here are some options:

•• Pick the smallest debt and make whatever extra payments you can until it is paid off. Once achieved, that extra monthly cash flow can be shifted onto the next debt. •• Credit cards often carry the highest rate, so investigate whether it is feasible to shift to a card with a lower interest rate on a ‘balance transfer’ deal •• Get rid of all non-essential expenses. Walk to work, take your lunch, avoid the morning coffee ritual. Put up with some lifestyle pain for a year or two. The payoff is big. •• Make sure that all minimum payments are paid on time – this reduces the chances of default fees or extra interest accruing. •• Protect your credit rating – it is a most valuable asset. new year resolutions – creating wealth with Debbie Riddiford Yes it’s that time of the year again, Christmas! My favourite time of the year, especially now that I have two beautiful grandchildren. Have you thought about what your New Year’s Resolution is going to be? Have you thought about creating wealth for your retirement? Let me share one of my friends’ New Year’s Resolutions with you. My friend’s are nearing retirement age and will have to self-fund their own retirement. After speaking with their financial planner they realised it is important to know that they will have enough to retire when they choose to do so. My friends like to be able to see and touch their investments and therefore like to invest in real property. In their situation, it was more advantageous to invest in property via their self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) as it minimised their tax position and protected the asset. In Australia, most people have money in superannuation funds. Many of them are changing from public superannuation funds to SMSF’s because of the greater flexibility and control over their investments.

december 2012

Personally, I believe that you should have more say in how your retirement funds are invested. Property has been a great source of wealth for Australian families for a long time. However, in saying that I do believe in diversifying my investments – my grandmother always said, “Don’t put all your eggs in the one basket”. Local financial planner Josh Mechielsen of Total Advice Partners explained that investing in property in your SMSF is easier than you think. Some of the things to consider are: •• Establish the SMSF and the investment strategy to ensure you are investing in line with your risk profile. •• Roll over current managed super fund balances into the SMSF. •• Find quality property investments.

You don’t have to have sufficient funds in your super fund to buy a property outright. It is now possible for your SMSF to borrow funds for property investment if structured in accordance with the government requirements. If you are considering investing in property in your super, I recommend that you talk to your financial planner, and preferably a planner who can relate to direct property investments, to learn about the right way to structure your SMSF before you do anything else. From the team at PJT and myself have a great Christmas and enjoy the festive season with your family and friends. Looking forward to seeing you in the New Year. li Bli father of two Craig McPherson is dealer principal of Pacific Motor Group, representing Ford, Land Rover, Volvo, Proton. Isuzu Ute and most recently Opel on the Sunshine Coast. A certified accountant, Craig was made partner in a large Brisbane accounting firm when he and his wife, Jodie, decided to escape the rat race and make the move to a more laidback regional centre to bring up their young son, Thomas (now eight years old). They also have a six-year-old daughter, Kate. When a position at Pacific Motor Group became available the couple jumped at the chance and haven’t looked back. Pacific Ford has grown from strength to strength under Craig’s direction and employs more than 100 staff in four locations – Currimundi, Kawana, Maroochydore and Noosa. Pacific Motor Group uses more than 120 local suppliers every month and supports many local charities, sporting groups and schools. Craig and his family love the Sunshine Coast lifestyle and although Craig admits he is not the “beach type” he loves the private, leafy surrounds of his acreage home in Bli Bli and says he wouldn’t live anywhere else. Profile chats with Craig about the life’s milestones that have shaped who he is today.

Craig McPherson

had experienced as children. We started looking at opportunities in places like Bundaberg and even Mt Isa when a position came up at Pacific Motor group on the Sunshine Coast. I had not spent a lot of time on the Coast because I am not really a “surfy”. I love fishing but grew up more around the creeks in Townsville so the move to the Coast was a bit of an unknown. While we found the move pretty hard to begin with, because we knew no-one and Thomas was not of school age, we now would not want to live anywhere else. We have just moved to a new acreage property in Bli Bli and absolutely love it. Told you I wasn’t a surfy! Life changing milestone 4: Running in the Bridge to Brisbane, 2011

I have always been a bit of a runner, but not long distances because I hurt my knee when I played soccer. My wife talked me into doing the Bridge to Brisbane in 2011 and I thought there was no chance I would make it. Thanks to a little friendly rivalry in the household, we did make the 10kms in one hour Life changing milestone 1: Meeting my wife, Jodie, 1997 This period was tough for me personally but I was fortunate to meet a beautiful and four minutes. This year we registered to do the 10kms in the Sunshine lady (my wife Jodie) who worked in the same accounting practice as me. She Coast event but Jodie got sick in the lead up. I had not had a great preparation told me a very important thing – “Time is a friend, a healer, and a maker of myself, but managed to do it in one hour and six seconds. I guess now I have dreams”. What can I say – the rest is history. One of those office romances to break the hour! that survived! Life changing milestone 2: The death of my brother, 2004

Life changing milestone 5: Pacific Motorgroup, 2005 to 2012

The last seven years have been an absolute blur! Since we moved to the Coast, Pacific purchased Northpoint Ford at Nambour, Ocean Ford at Noosaville, built the new Ford dealership on Sugar Road and renovated pretty well every other building we occupy. The GFC was a really tough time, but I have to say we knuckled down and did a great job of getting through it. It was interesting that our best result came the year after the GFC because we had fine-tuned everything in our business. It often takes hard times to really focus your efforts. We employ a lot of staff on the Coast and are fortunate to have many Life changing milestone 3: Moving to the Sunshine Coast, 2005 long-term loyal staff which makes it a pleasure to come to work. The next 12 I am an accountant by profession and had been made partner in a large Brisbane months will certainly be busy for us as we will have a lot happening around accounting firm. At about the same time we decided we would like to bring the Sugar Road precinct with new franchises being added and building works up our new baby in a smaller regional community, given that is what we both taking place. Here we go again! Not long after the birth of our first child, Thomas, my oldest brother, Robert, passed away from melanoma at the age of 44. We had taken Thomas to Townsville to be christened and Robert was pretty much incoherent at that time due to medication. Amazingly, he became lucid for a fleeting moment when we talked to him about our new baby. That was the last time we communicated and he passed away two days later. It really was an amazing moment in time for me.

take control of your mortgage sooner with Linda Ireland Summer is here! We’re all feeling inspired to spring clean our homes and get ready for the warmer months. Why not give your finances a spring clean too? Never mind if rates were still on hold last month, let’s focus on taking control of our finances to see if savings can be made elsewhere. Compared with most world economies, the data out of Australia is strong. We are approaching full employment, our banking system is robust, inflation is controlled, interest rates are at historically low levels and borrowers are paying down debts. Nonetheless, a number of consumer sentiment surveys point to the fact that for many consumers, good economic data has not translated into renewed confidence about the economy. Here are three ways in which borrowers can take control of their finances.

1. Take control of your lender – build a relationship with your lender and don’t be afraid to ask them a range of questions. Just because rates are on hold doesn’t mean you can’t ask your lender for the best deal. If you feel uncomfortable having this conversation yourself, have an expert such as your mortgage broker do the bargaining for you. 2. Take control of your loan – there are certain features of a home loan that if used appropriately can save you thousands of dollars and cut time off your loan term. Such features include: •• Offset account – attached to a home loan it helps to reduce the interest accumulated on the loan. •• Extra repayment options – allows borrowers to make extra repayments by putting additional funds into the loan and / or increasing the frequency of repayments.

•• Redraw facility – enables borrowers to place their income, savings and / or extra repayments into the loan and withdraw funds when needed. 3. Take control of your finances by putting an expert in the driver’s seat. With so many lenders and loan products on the market, it can be difficult to identify the best home loan option for you in terms of your financial goals, interest rates, fees, features and even lenders’ customer service performance. A professional mortgage broker should present you with a wide range of lenders and options and can take on the hard work of comparing loans. what is your business worth? with Linda Harley When the time comes to sell your business one of the first questions is, “What is my business worth?”. While many business owners genuinely do not know, others have an unreal expectation. While it can be a little cliché, your business is worth what someone will pay for it. There are number of rules-of-thumb to value a business, and everyone will have an opinion. However, when it comes to actually achieving the sale of your business, it will be dictated by price, presentation, promotion and the negotiation through the sale process. Price: The final price paid for the business will be dictated by a willing seller and willing buyer. Regardless of opinion, if the price does not represent fair value for both parties a sale will not proceed. Fair value is in turn influenced by presentation and promotion. Without all three working together, the final price achievable may be compromised.

Presentation: The presentation of your business will influence the final sale price and in fact whether it sells at all. The more time you take in preparing for your future sale the better the outcome will be. Your exit plan should start well before you want to sell and be done in consultation with your professional advisors. A well-planned exit ensures the sales negotiation will achieve the best possible sale price based on the overall presentation of the business from the first meeting with your business broker through to all inspections of your business by buyers. An investment in thorough preparation and presentation will reward you on settlement day.

optimise the sale price and terms and conditions of your sale contract that your business broker is able to achieve on your behalf. A successful sale will only be made under the right conditions, at the price and terms that are acceptable to both parties. Don’t leave the sale of your business to chance. Promotion: The sale of your business may be the most important sale of your life. The last thing you should be considering when selling is to try and ‘save money’ on promotion. Promotion will bring the buyers. Having more than one buyer will drive up competition, desire for your business and reduce a buyer’s ability to negotiate, hence

Is your man looking after YOU? with Alex Robertson

In all relationships, there are the things we wish we could change, and those we know we never will. Does your partner really look after you and your family? I’m not talking about making sure the bills are paid or defending your honour. I’m talking about the fact that, for some reason, all men seem to think they are invincible or that things will never happen to them and tend to take silly risks. This, no matter how much we nag, will never change. But we can manage it. We might not change the fact that they

gamble, but we can give them a limit and take the card away. We can’t change that they sometimes do annoying things, but we can curb them, manage them and potentially change the outcome. We can insure them so that our family is looked after in the right way. So don’t wait for something to happen before you protect yourself. Just call us. We will find a way to not only make it affordable, but cost you a lot less than you might imagine and benefit you more than you will ever know.

We can help you protect what matters most – you and your family. Shore Finance 5477 7315 www.shore-finance.com.au
