A
freshly brewed coffee in hand, beach bag thrown over my shoulder, flip flops comfortably on foot and a casual summer dress – the perfect attire for a day in one of the most loved Sunshine Coast towns, Caloundra. As I step out of my car parked along The Esplanade, the town hums to life with the buzz of lunchtime and the whistle of coffee machines. People descend from the beach, sandy feet and all, to the cafes for a bite to eat, indulging in the fresh salty sea air and relaxing ambiance infused throughout Caloundra and its vibrant people. Thinking of how to start my day, I am overwhelmed with choices of where to go and what to see. I couldn’t possibly fit everything into one day, but heck, I am going to try! Fascinated with the tourist appeal of Bulcock Street, I decide that this is my first port of call. Starting at one end, I am immediately struck by the array of cafes and coffee shops, each offering a delicious and unique menu, with international options from sushi to vegetarian and organic juice blends and mouth-watering cakes. Caloundra’s coffee scene has become so popular that people are driving big miles to get in on the new brews.
DISCOVER HOW EASY IT IS TO GET HOOKED ON THIS PLACE. IT IS THE IDEAL DESTINATION TO REFRESH, REJUVENATE AND INDULGE. There are fashion boutiques, surf stores, homewares, the Big Screen Cinemas and more, all found along Bulcock Street. One store in particular catches my attention, at number 34. Heart and Home is a haven for those who love collectables and homewares. Owner Tom O’Sullivan is a keen collector of miniature cars and has lovingly put his own private (and rare) collection on display, which is drawing crowds from all around the Coast and further afield. Bulcock Street is so versatile, it ticks all the boxes. But, this is only the start of my adventure at Caloundra – there are six beaches yet to explore, plenty of entertainment venues, fabulous tours, roller-skating and even skydiving to indulge in. As I want to take in as much salt air as possible, I travel to Pumicestone Passage, the start of a breath-taking coastal pathway, which stretches along some of the

most scenic shorelines in Queensland. The path is a continuous coastal link from Golden Beach in the south, around Caloundra Headland and then Moffat Headland, before heading north following the long, sandy beaches of Kawana to Point Cartwright. It is the perfect way to waste a day, exploring the coves and rocks along the shoreline. I finish off my day by watching the most magnificent sunset from Bulcock Beach. As the sun dips behind the Glass House Mountains, I see families at the picnic tables enjoying fresh cooked fish and chips by the water’s edge. You are seriously spoilt for restaurants, cafes and takeaways in this neck of the woods. As the night draws in, I realise I have discovered how easy it is to get hooked on this place. It is the ideal destination to relax, refresh and rejuvenate.

elping to promote Caloundra as the Sunshine Coast destination of choice is Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and Industry executive director Leanne Layfield, who says Caloundra is fast becoming the destination to visit on the Coast. “It’s the relaxing and natural appeal. It’s beautiful and it’s also unpretentious. It’s perfect for families. It’s perfect for couples. All generations enjoy Caloundra and people return time and time again,” Leanne says. “From a local’s point of view Caloundra has everything you need. The depth and variety of what’s on offer is second to none. It’s also a very caring and considerate community and the pride in winning Australia’s Tidiest Town in 2012 is still very apparent.” As well as Caloundra’s population being on the rise, so is the local economy. As Leanne explains, the health, education and service sectors are stronger than ever. Tourism is also on the rebound and that helps supports a lot of hospitality and retail businesses. “It’s an exciting time here with the new hospital at Kawana opening, and we have also had the expansion of the Caloundra Private Hospital, as well as growing residential areas, new schools and an abundance of new businesses popping up throughout the city. It’s a very progressive time here in Caloundra.”
