Helping people say RSL steps up for families IT’S not just a chair. This piece of furniture will be used during a solemn time. Resthaven on the Quarry facility manager and director of nursing Mary Anne Edwards believes the recent donation of an AC Couch from the RSL Mackay subbranch will enable families to say goodbye to dying residents in comfort. The chair will be used during the end of life care process. Ms Edwards said the chair would provide a comfortable seat/bed for people staying with their family member in the last hours of their life. She said the chair would be a great asset to Resthaven. Reginald Powell from Mackay RSL said the chair had been purchased by the branch after considerable

research. The AC Couch is valued at $2218. “This couch is converted into a bed and used overnight or as long as it’s required by visiting family members at a certain time in one’s life,” Mr Powell said. Resthaven has 16 members of the RSL. Ms Edwards said the couch had been on Resthaven’s wish list. The next project for the aged care facility will be a special garden. “I’m hoping to establish a sensory garden for the dementia patients,” Ms Edwards said. The garden will include various elements from smells to textures. Ms Edwards hoped the project would be completed sometime this year and believed it would be greatly enjoyed.

COMPLETING CHANGING HER LIFE AT 30, TRANSFORMING FROM A HIGH-FLYING EXECUTIVE TO A LEADING FIGURE IN THE GLOBAL WELLNESS SPHERE, NIKKI FOGDEN-MOORE IS PROOF THAT AT ANY TIME IT IS POSSIBLE TO CHANGE OUR STORY. ALL WE NEED TO DO IS LEARN HOW TO OVERCOME OUR GREATEST BARRIER: OURSELVES.

N

ikki Fogden-Moore, a.k.a. The Vitality Coach, CEO of Life’s A Gym and head trainer for Women’s Health & Fitness magazine, is a motivator, a positive instigator, a disruptor of apathy. As Lorna Jane is to the active living retail world, Nikki is to the wellness and lifestyle arena, and it’s a role she has grown into with fervour. A sassy powerhouse of a woman on a mission to help high achievers look and feel their best, Nikki radiates an energy of positivity rarely encountered, arming the savvy with the necessary knowledge, inspiration and support to make the finest possible choices for long-term health and happiness. Infectious in her passion, it’s little wonder Nikki is in high demand, with The Vitality Coach podcasts downloaded in over 78 countries, a book about to be launched, and a tour of the US and major cities in Australia planned for 2015. Born in New Zealand, Nikki always had a love of fitness and health, but it wasn’t until later in life that it became who she was, when she found herself teaching others the influence that moving the body has on feeling good. “After finishing university, completing a Bachelor of Commerce (with a minor in Physical Education), I moved straight into advertising and marketing, and it wasn’t long before I had secured a role with a global advertising agency in London. I was 24 and life was fabulous. After three years in England, I moved to Amsterdam, where I remained working on international campaigns for various major brands," Nikki says. “When I turned 30 however, I decided to have some time out. With sport a constant motivator in my life, I was (and had always been) drawn to the ocean, so it wasn’t long before I was undertaking snorkelling tours in Egypt

and giving ski boat and windsurf instruction in Greece. “While in advertising and branding, I had worked with a huge number of people who were highly driven and successful on so many levels, but who had lost their mojo in life. Through my love of fitness, I had helped them – empowering them to step-up. During my sabbatical (when working in Greece), it dawned on me that this seemed to be a common issue for many. I had a buzzing head of ideas on how to make life greater for those who were struggling, and couldn’t think of anything better than showing others how to incorporate an active lifestyle into their routines, while also addressing fitness and nutrition.” As a result, Life’s A Gym was born, and not surprisingly, it took off as fast and as furiously as Nikki had hoped. At the same time, Nikki also saw an opportunity to establish an athlete management agency in extreme sport, and set about applying her international branding expertise to help emerging sports personalities build their media personas. Pow! Nikki was on fire. From employee to entrepreneur, she had jumped the gate with relative ease, seizing every moment to put her business ideas into practice. As time ticked on however, it was time for another shift. “I wanted to live the life I preached, and I knew that I could no longer do this in Europe. So, when it came to thinking about my next step, I realised I had to go somewhere that lit up my soul from the inside out – somewhere that matched my outlook and my devotion to feeling incredible, moving my body, being near the water and feeling inspired each day. Noosa ticked all the boxes. I had come a long way on my journey of growth, and Noosa was the perfect spot from which to continue my adventure. With many global clients on my books, I also knew it would be a beautiful point of reference for them.” profilemag.com.au

PROFILE COVER STORY

Moving her businesses to the East Coast of Australia was no simple feat, but one which Nikki committed to with gusto. Within a couple of years, she had done it, her intercontinental client base growing exponentially in the process. She was ready for the next chapter. “Whereas Life’s A Gym was a general lifestyle support, I wanted to set up a one-stop-shop wellness coaching arena to help high flying executives, professionals and entrepreneurs to live their best life from every angle, and to obtain that elusive work/life balance. I believe you have to create the life you want (else you get the life you’re given), so The Vitality Coach was a natural step forward for me in this regard. “Offering a system to nurture the body, mind and soul, I wanted to create sustained positive change for my clients, allowing them to find success in all areas of their lives. Having a strong business background meant I understood the pressures of the corporate field and could provide a truly personalised approach.” Finding herself a dream team of fellow game changers, collaborating with such icons as Layne Beachley (seven-times world surfing champion and entrepreneur), Ben Wilson (pioneer and founder of BWSurf), and Emma Snowsill (Olympic,

Commonwealth and triple World Champion – the highest award winning woman in International Triathlon Union history), Nikki set her sights high and reached for the stars. As a result, The Vitality Coach catapulted itself into the wellness stratosphere with speed – a shining supernova exuding a luminosity which caught the attention of the world at large, drawing the cool, the clever, the high and the mighty to her door. A firm favourite among professionals and corporates, with her vitality retreats gaining traction on the circuit, Nikki soon earned a solid reputation as the go-to-girl for high-end wellness lifestyle coaching. “In today’s cosmos of the super busy, it is important we look after ourselves – not in a gimmicky kind of way via quick-fix fads which promise the earth (and don’t deliver), but through real long-term effort and change, step-by-step. “It’s about empowerment – to identify and be mindful of our potential, and realising this potential, now and for the rest of our lives. It’s not about strict exercise regimes, or 12-week diet plans. It’s about a holistic approach

to life. It’s about learning what makes each of us brilliant, and then incorporating this into a life that’s already long established.” Smooching up to her pride and joy (her dog, Roxy), it is clear to see that Nikki is a natural born leader. Unafraid of venturing into the unknown and doing things a little differently, Nikki is a beacon of inspiration – a beautiful contradiction of business acumen versus creative ingenuity – a go-getter who understands the fusion of self-care with personal fulfilment. Nicknamed the ‘five star smart person’s solution to wellness’, Nikki refreshingly isn’t about the smoke screen or the faux promises. Quite the converse. She’s about the grit, the action, the movement, the determination – THE REWARD! A lover of working in the office in her bikini, Nikki is a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day, a fork of lightning in a dark sky. Now dividing her time between presenting, writing, coaching and running corporate retreats, Nikki is about to have her biggest year yet. A proud representative of the lifestyle the Coast has to offer, 2015 will see her head to California on an ‘Influencers’ tour, as well as promoting her soon-to-be released book, VITALITY, and launching her new-look VitalityCoachTV. It’s a juncture which Nikki has worked very hard to reach. “Anything worth having takes persistence,” smiles Nikki. “To be great and to achieve, one cannot give up. We each create our own destiny. It’s about being educated and living consciously. If we incorporate fresh air, fresh food and a fresh perspective into our lives, we can achieve vitality, health and wellness. If we change our mindsets towards healthy living, we change our bodies and we change our direction. And once this has been done? Let me tell you, the view is spectacular.” Nikki Fogden-Moore is one rocking chick. Audacious, bold and confident, she’s a dynamo, a rescuer, a game changer. Pushing for positive development in herself as well as others, she’s certainly one who not only talks the talk, but walks the walk, and it is perhaps this quality over every other which gives Nikki the ultimate credibility and edge. Nikki Fogden-Moore, you got it covered, girl. summer holiday issue

“Vitality comes from the inside, out,” explains Nikki. “Small changes, implemented seamlessly into your life, can have a huge impact both internally and externally. If you have a healthy mind and body, it shows, and success, however you define it, flows from there.” Below are Nikki’s top tips for incorporating more balance into our busy lives this year – remember, it’s a fresh start! 1. Keep it simple – Use the approach that works best for you. No change is worth making unless it’s sustainable, so it’s important that the changes are ones you can implement forever. 2. Utilise the abundance of information available to help ensure your success – There are so many resources available to support and empower you along the way. Find the ones that speak best to you and help keep you on track. 3. Empower yourself – You CAN create the life you want! You have that control and if you’re reading this, you’re well on your way! Every day we have the chance to be amazing and to do something incredible. Find exercise that you love and healthy food that you enjoy. Once you have mastered this, you will never look back.

WORDS JESSICA JANE SAMMUT PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO REPUBLIC AND CHESTERTON SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY

THE RAW TALENT BEHIND HER SELF-TITLED COUTURE LABEL AND HER RECENT SWIMWEAR LINE, KLAMS OF NOOSA, ALEX MEARING IS MAKING HER NAME IN THE EXCLUSIVE GLOBAL FASHION ARENA, AND ALL FROM HER PARADISE ABODE, AS JESSICA JANE SAMMUT DISCOVERS.

THANKS TO STUDIO REPUBLIC FOR SHOOTING THE INCREDIBLE PHOTOS OF ALEX IN THIS STRIKING GOLD DRESS WHICH ALEX DESIGNED FOR OUR FASHION COVER PAGE AND PICTURED LEFT. HAIR AND MAKEUP BY THE TEAM AT STUDIO REPUBLIC. STAR ORNAMENT FROM PARTY AND CHRISTMAS COMPLETE, MAROOCHYDORE.

A

graduate of the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney, Alex Mearing throws back her head and looks to the sky. From one who freely admits her journey to find herself has been a struggle, it is with appreciative vigour that Alex now grins the grin of someone who knows who she is. And there is no better feeling. An up and coming fashion designer, having launched her self-titled label in 2012, Alex is in a good place as the world waits with baited breath to see her next move. It’s a justified reward for this sweet and uber talented Noosa 29-year-old, and one which is gratefully received. Born in NSW, Alex spent much of her childhood moving around, attending boarding school in Sydney when she reached her senior years, and ultimately finishing school at the Good Shepherd in Noosa when she arrived on the Coast at the age of 16. Returning to Sydney to complete an Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design and Textiles, Alex stood out enough to secure an assistant design/production position with Melanie Cutfield of Muccia, a high profile designer in the cool fashion area of Surry Hills. “Working with Melanie was sensational and allowed me to put all my fashion theory into practise,” explains Alex. “There were only four of us working for the brand and the sampling process was done in-house from scratch – designing, cutting, pattern-making and sewing. It was literally one of those bespoke couture houses you read about! The excitement of putting together a garment was palpable. I learnt how to cut, how to make patterns, summer holiday issue

even how to run a business, which is so much a part of fashion designing. It was the platform which gave me the confidence to go forward.” After a couple of years working for Melanie, Alex began to consider her next move when Giddyupgirl came calling – offering her an opportunity to return to Noosa as Giddyupgirl’s head designer. It was a role she couldn’t resist. Designing a horsey range for Giddyupgirl, Alex found her role very different, concentrating solely on design instead of the whole production process, and manufacturing on a large scale offshore as opposed to creating one-off unique pieces onsite. Fusing her knowledge of the two opposing sides of the fashion business (couture and mass production), Alex secured her skill set, and after two seasons of designing for Giddyupgirl, she launched her own label, manifesting the dream she had since she was a young girl. “Launching Alex Mearing was extremely nerve wracking and exhilarating at the same time!” laughs Alex. “It made me realise a lot about myself and who I was. My first pieces were very out there. I went a little bit crazy! I wanted to create interesting patterns and lines using incredible textures, but looking back they were perhaps a little too much. I had some exciting stockists in Melbourne and Sydney but it was a slow process. I am now more clean and modern in my aesthetic, although still futuristic. “At the same time, I was also doing individually-designed commissioned pieces under the label, and after I approached the iconic Ainsley Hutchence of Sticks and Stones Agency to make her wedding dress for her Vegas nuptials, things really started to take off.” profilemagazine

LIFESTYLE FOCUS ON FASHION

I always felt quite lost in my early twenties, but now I feel I know who I am.”

Completing every stage of the design process herself, including patternmaking and machining, Alex put together her collections with the utmost attention to detail and perfection. Becoming known for her edgy take on a concept, it wasn’t long before she had become one of the favoured in-crew of the international fashion collective, making bespoke pieces for the London scene, no less. Yet soon, she was looking to her next task. “Living in Noosa, I have always been on the look-out for the raddest bikini. In the end I decided to design one for myself. What I didn’t expect, was that when I wore it, everyone who saw it loved it, and wanted one! So, in an experiment, I posted a picture on social media, and amazingly, the response was equally as positive. And so, the concept of Klams of Noosa was born in December 2013!” Expanding the business idea, sourcing a credible manufacturer, organising packaging, agreeing on labelling, signing off on branding and putting together a lookbook working with Analogue Digital, Alex’s Klams Noosa bikinis will be available at Bow and Arrow Trading and www.klams.com.au. “Offering a sophisticated iconic swimwear look, the label is simple and casual, yet stylish,” reveals Alex. Managing to tune into the demands of her public and respond to her audience, Alex has already displayed all the hallmarks of a designer who knows what they are doing, despite her youth. “I come from a creative background,” confirms Alex. “My mother was a jewellery maker and I used to help her put the pieces together. I was never very inspired by school, except for art, history and the time I got an ‘A’ in home economics for sewing! “You are more likely to find me clicking through Tumblr and blogs, than reading up on design theory. Designing is something you have to feel inside. It’s about being inspired and expressing that influence. It’s about evolution and change and the desire for timelessness. “I always felt quite lost in my early twenties, but now I feel I know who I am. I am such a feeler, so if I am not feeling it, I am not doing it!

Now I trust my own decisions and I don’t worry about other people, but it has taken me a fair amount of growing up to get to this point. It has been so worth it though.” Looking ahead to extend Klams of Noosa into a lifestyle brand, Alex has the beast of quiet ambition between her teeth and isn’t letting go. With such heroes as Kristie Kahler of Winston Wolfe (as seen in Profile September 2013), Alex knows that hard work and unwavering belief pays off, and it’s something she has clung to in her darker moments. “I lost my brother to depression in 2010, which pulled the ground from under me,” explains Alex. “It also taught me to relish life. It is so short, which is why I started my own label.” Nowadays Alex feels she has so much to be happy about, and when she is not designing, she can be found curled up with her Bichon Frise, Louie (who she affectionately refers to as her ‘fashion dog’), or walking him along Noosa beach as the sun rises. “The greatest time of my life is happening right now,” Alex smiles. “I feel like I am coming into my own and am so appreciative of what I have and the beautiful people who surround me. I have learnt to trust my instincts and it feels good. If I want to go for a walk, I do. If I feel the urge to work, I do. I find if I let things happen naturally, I feel much happier and the results are better. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is – in fact, dealing with international clients means I am often awake all times of the night.” With a successful trip to New York last year (complete with a road trip to Santa Barbara in a red Mustang!) serving as a recce (reconnaissance) of the market together with an assessment of her place in it, Alex is enthusiastic about the future and it’s little wonder. “Who knows what will happen next for me, but I love that I don’t know!” she beams. “I just feel lucky that I get to make people feel good through my designs. When a person puts on something they love, their demeanour changes, their eyes light up, their confidence levels soar, and they smile! This is a gift that I get to keep on giving. And for that I am eternally grateful.”

Who knows what will happen next for me, but I love that I don’t know!”

BUSINESS PROMOTION

Y

oung entrepreneur Traci Castle has launched Maroochydore’s hottest creative space! The entire concept is a unique Creative Hub with four local businesses working harmoniously together under one roof. Many of you will remember the location being Maze Mania, an indoor kid’s playground that needed to be completely gutted to build this new creative space. The hub has been created to bring a variety of creative fields together to work, collaborate, hang out, shop, be pampered or meet a friend for coffee. So how did a coffee lounge, beauty salon, photography studio and fashion boutique end up under the one roof? Traci founded Studio Republic over five years ago with a business partner, eventually deciding to go it alone and taking sole ownership of the business in 2012. For a while Traci continued to operate out of her original space on Technology Drive in Warana but as a fast growing business she needed a bigger and better location - one that could accommodate her new vision of a massive creative space! So, the search for a venue was on and she began scouting for the perfect fit, a location that could accommodate her main passions in life – image, style and taste! After a long search she found a 420sqm floor space neatly tucked away in Norval Court, a fast growing and upcoming area near the Maroochydore CBD precinct. The space is now home to The Art of Bean, a coffee lounge offering premium coffee, free wifi and numerous charging stations for mobile workers, flavoursome food, and an art gallery featuring work from local artists for sale; On Trend, who offer quality beauty and makeup services, makeup products and hair styling for special occasions using natural and organic ingredients; Three Words Styling, a fashion boutique offering men and women a variety of edgy on trend street fashion and accessories and styling sessions; and of course the Studio Republic photo studio and behind-the-scenes experience shooting up-to-date, high fashion for everyone from couples to families, corporate headshots and pets to covers of popular magazines including our very own Profile magazine. “I wanted to create a space in which all creative fields could come together to work, and collaborate, hang out, shop, be pampered or meet a friend for coffee,” says Traci. “We also wanted to break down the barriers that photography studios are not all behind small studio doors where people can sometimes feel a little uneasy about the prospect of being in front of the camera.

“Here at the Creative Hub it’s open plan and clients and visitors are free to wander between all the different sections in a relaxed vibe. Usually the dads sit in the cafe and scope the magazines and grab a coffee while the ladies are being made over. We have already had amazing feedback about the great energy you get when people walk into the space and we can’t wait to hear what you think too.” Stop by and experience the Creative Hub for a cuppa or lunch with a friend, stay for a beauty treatment at On Trend, grab a new outfit at Three Words Styling or spend the day with Studio Republic having full makeup and hair, and enjoying a shoot with friends or family with world-class images to take home and enjoy as a special memory. The Creative Hub is also super keen to chat with businesses and creatives about possible collaborations. “You may like to talk to us about hosting events, workshops, meet-up groups, exhibitions and other events at our venue,” says Traci. “Our doors are now officially open and we are excited to see what new and exciting partnerships we can build on the Sunshine Coast and beyond.”

Sluggish energy or fatigue, low motivation, trouble with your weight, fluid retention, foggy or low mood, hair loss and low hormones are also symptoms that can occur with excessive sensitivity to the cold. Your thyroid could be the most common cause of a low body temperature, though keep in mind that the thyroid doesn’t just play up on its own, there’s always another cause. Your Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is the most typical and only test your doctor may choose to do to check your thyroid function and if you have a real and obvious thyroid condition or disease, this will generally be abnormal, leading to further thyroid testing. However, if your TSH is normal, you could still be suffering with Subclinical Hypothyroidism or Wilson’s Syndrome, which is a mild form of low thyroid function and can wreak just as much havoc for your body temperature, metabolism, hormone balance, mood issues and energy levels, and will not be picked up with TSH testing alone.

There are a full range of tests that should be done to fully examine your thyroid health, and without these, this very common condition can go undetected for years. Once you have a correct diagnosis, finding out what to do about it is the next step. Triggers for Wilson’s Syndrome can be stress induced, dietary, hormonal imbalance or nutritional deficiency, and each individual can vary greatly. Finding these triggers is as simple as organising follow up blood testing over a range of nutrients and body functions to find the cause easily and is often very quickly resolved. Q Q

WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUTHFUL SKIN? with Vicki Hull

Did you know that the secret to youthful luminous skin lies within your very own blood cells? Our blood plasma carries growth factors which promote healing and stimulate the production of collagen. In the medical world of anti-ageing we are constantly looking for safer, more natural ways to restore collagen. Why? Because collagen is likened to scaffolding holding everything together in our skin, it provides protection and prevents absorption of environmental toxins and it reflects health and vitality. By the age of 40 our skin has lost half of its collagen stores with approximately 1 per cent loss each year thereafter. In addition, sun exposure causes rapid destruction of collagen cells and prematurely ages our skin. Consequently the skin becomes dull as the scaffolding collapses, leading to poor skin tone and the formation of wrinkles. Luckily for Sunny Coasters we now have FACTOR4, an advanced new medical technology which contains four times more growth factors than any brand blood plasma rich injections. FACTOR4 works by combining micro-needling of the skin with highly concentrated, prepared and filtered super-rich plasma, your plasma! The treatment naturally stimulates new collagen growth over the next few weeks, reducing fine lines, brightening the skin and minimising dark circles, stretch marks and scars. The bonus effects improves the skin’s overall tone, texture, strength, flexibility and elasticity. FACTOR4 significantly slows down the ageing process, it contains anti-inflammatory proteins and unlike laser every skin type is suitable. Areas of the face, neck, décolletage, backs of hands and under the eyes can benefit from FACTOR4, which is a minimally invasive treatment to restore a truly radiant complexion! HOW CAN I GET BEAUTIFUL LASHES SAFELY? with Alva Hunter

The party season is upon us ladies, and if you’re anything like me, good lash extensions are calling your name. We’ve all seen women who’ve had the cheap and nasty backyard extensions, who look like spiders have died on their eyes, but I’m here to tell you a few tips and tricks on getting lashed right the first time. So here are my 10 commandments for getting safe, beautiful lashes: 1. Firstly, make sure it’s a clean professional environment. You don’t want to risk nasty infections. 2. Choose an experienced professional. Your therapist should sound confident, and be able to talk you through the process and show you some pictures of their work. 3. Don’t choose the cheapest price, this will mean they are not likely to be using quality glue or lashes, and are likely to be rushing through to get them on quickly to get the next person on the bed. A full set of lashes should take an experienced therapist around 1.5 hours. 4. Ask if you need a lash tint as it will help to blend the artificial lashes. If you do need one, make sure to do it the day before the lashes are applied, not on the day of because your lashes will be too moist to hold the lash glue securely. 5. Avoid water for 24 hours, try to avoid rubbing your eyes and when you want to take them off don’t pull them out – have them removed professionally. 6. The therapist should match the length, thickness and curl to your natural lash – and to the look you want to achieve. You don’t want to ask for natural lashes then end up looking like you could sweep the floor just by blinking! 7. This may seem obvious but the extensions should be attached to your natural lash, not your eyelid! 8. The glue should be undetectable, no clumps or lumps! 9. They should last for as long as your natural lash cycle (around six weeks) however as your lashes are on varying cycles, some will fall out sooner than others. A three week top-up is generally recommended. 10. Do not use oil-based eye makeup removers as this can dissolve the glue. aGlo Finishing Salon The Esplanade, Mooloolaba Phone: 5452 5720 profilemag.com.au

PROFILE OPINION

WORDS ANNA RAWLINGS

H

ave you ever bought into a fashion trend and regretted it? I know I have! The feeling of taking home the latest must-have, strutting your stuff and feeling fabulous for the season can quickly turn into a catwalk casualty that’s more disturbing than designer. Your once-treasured possession now becomes a fashion flashback you’d rather not remember, as that green-hued, tartan print, halter neck top fades into a not-so-trendsetting sunset.

The old adage for these dresses is the saying ‘party in the front, business at the back’ with their high-low hem of short front and long at the back. The adaptation of the already-questionable mullet hair style into a dress is an interesting concept; one which has unfortunately been lost in translation. If the world has to have mullets, they should stay firmly of the hair variety. Thumbs down!

Firstly, l’d like to give crocs an honourable mention for the comeback of these sandals – ‘pool slider’ shoes are actually being heralded as a summer must-have this season, perhaps inspired by their rubbery cousins. Sure, the thick rubber soles and wide band look wearable, but with some designers taking the trend to high fashion and retailing for over $1,000, these shoes are the wrong combination of librarian meets poolboy. Yes, they’re retro, comfortable maybe, but as for potential to be this season’s hottest accessory – they fall flat. Keep sliding, please.

summer holiday issue

I’m curious to know what the marketing strategists behind this chequered atrocity thought when they were given the brief. These boxy jackets closely resemble the standard plastic plaid-patterned laundry bags used for clothes washing, and trying to convince the general public that it was desirable to resemble a by-product of a laundromat was near impossible. At $2,000 a pop, some high profile Aussie fashionistas tackled the laundry-chic trend, but it quickly faded into obscurity. A wash and dry case of a fashion fail if there ever was one!

This has long been a fashion faux pas – in some cases it’s acceptable to wear tights as pants, but outside of the gym, bedroom or lounge room, it’s walking a fine line between comfort and a big no-no. The worst offenders? Too-tight leggings that reveal everything, or wearing a transparent pair with crop tops. So, if you really can’t give up the tights, avoid hiding in shadows to dodge the sunlight shining the spotlight on your rear end, and pair them with a long shirt or better yet, swap for leather or jeans.

Do you ever feel nostalgic for the carefree, childhood days of filling your one-piece or speedos with sand? The ensuing effect of saggy togs drooping low with the weight of wet sand was delightfully hilarious. Luckily, we can now recreate these blessed childhood memories with drop crotch pants, also known as harem pants. First worn by yogis or on-trend women as a fashion statement, the pants soon caught the attention of the other gender, and can now be seen on the likes of Justin Bieber. Available in leather to cotton styles, the low crotch of these MC Hammer-type pants are not particularly flattering on the everyday wearer. And don’t even get me started on how they look on the guys!

profile: Who was your earliest style influence? deborah: I would have to say my mother. From when I was a very young girl I remember her having a strong interest in fashion. I remember her taking me to a large store in the city where we lived and giving me an amount of money to buy my summer wardrobe. I can still remember each piece I selected, and her asking me how I would be combining the pieces and what else would I be wearing them with. I am lucky to have grown up with someone who has been able to influence me when it comes to quality and style. My mother, to this day, demonstrates the essence of what style really means. I rarely go anywhere with her without someone commenting on how she looks and dresses. profile: What are the ‘must haves’ for the season? deborah: Firstly, denim jeans. Jeans work across all seasons for a casual look, combined with a textured knit and cropped collarless jacket. And pastels – the best thing about pastels is that you can choose the most flattering colour and wear it in whatever style works for you. Casual, dressy or sporty, it’s your choice, work the colour palette that suits you. profile: An item you’ll never part with? deborah: I am a shoe girl! I always had a diverse range of shoes, always good quality as that way you can have them over a longer period of time and they still look like new. I always have a mix of colours and different leathers. profile: If you could only wear one piece of jewellery, what would it be? deborah: I decided when my husband asked me to marry him that I only wanted to wear one ring, so I would have to say that. I also never remove a beautiful gold and silver bracelet he gave to me. profile: What is your favourite colour combo? deborah: I always have the staple of the neutrals black, white and natural, which the pastels blend with to give an individual look. The pop colour that always returns each season is radiant orchid. I like the vibrancy of the hue and violet tones that work with this and always sit well with me in either clothing or accessories. 70

profilemagazine

profile: What is your priority when choosing clothes? deborah: High on my list is fit; choose clothes that flatter your shape. Clothes that fit look more expensive. profile: Any personal styling tricks? deborah: Effortless style is really based around classic looks. Trends should therefore be ‘the add on’ to your look. Treat your clothes as investments, it is worth spending that little extra on the fabric, fit and design. Add accessories to create your individual style. It is very desirable to select different pieces to everyone else. Make the look and look like you own it! profile: What would you never wear? deborah: I am afraid stilettos are out for me, I love height but a wedge is the only way up for me. profile: How long does it take you to get ready in the morning? Evening? deborah: For work, approximately 30 minutes as I know the look I need and want to convey. Planning is the key so at the beginning of each season I decide what will work for me. This allows me to move through this process each morning effortlessly and on time to meet the other demands of the day. The evening would be a little longer and would depend on the occasion. profile: If you were going on an island holiday, what would you pack? deborah: I am a very light traveller, so for me it is simple – Durieu Travel silk, 100 per cent washable silk, no ironing required and each piece weighs 100 grams. The styling is flattering, easy to wear and looks great worn with shorts, jeans and a dress trouser if required for evening. I can add in a silk cardigan or wear one of the beautiful dresses from the collection. Of course I would also be taking swimmers, a wide brimmed hat and 30-plus sunscreen.

Wild WORDS ANNA RAWLINGS PHOTOS JULIAN BEATTIE

AN EARLY UPBRINGING IN SOUTH AFRICA SHAPED BY A RESTRICTIVE SOCIETY WAS TURNED AROUND WITH THE FREEDOM TO FLOURISH CREATIVELY IN AUSTRALIA. THE RESULT? A TALENTED PHOTOGRAPHER WANDERING THE WORLD, LIVING LIFE THROUGH A LENS. ANNA RAWLINGS EXPLORES THE EYE OF JANNEKE STORM.

C

all it serendipity or call it fate, but the moment Janneke Storm’s parents relocated her family to Australia, the creative spirit of this popular photographer was allowed to spread her wings. Her name has now become synonymous in the industry with raw and inspired imagery, but growing up in South Africa, the creative industry was not the usual profession. “It was quite traditional, you know, ‘you need to be a doctor’ – an artist wasn’t really something you could be taken seriously about,” Janneke remembers. But it was the move with her parents and brother to Australia, settling in Maryborough, that fed the creative cravings of a 13-year-old Janneke. Janneke’s entry into photography came when she chose an elective subject for her communications degree. “ I absolutely loved it and thought, ‘I might investigate this more’,” she says. The next stepping stone was a two-year TAFE diploma course, before heading back to uni to finish her bachelor degree. That was two years ago, since then, photography has become a fulltime occupation. Her name is now synonymous with wedding and fashion photography, with some modish freelance work, collaborating with some of the region’s most creative ‘in-crowd’. “I do a lot of work for Sticks and Stones agency and Isobel Badin who is a designer on the Coast, I also do some work with Alterior Motif,” Janneke says. “My fashion jobs are usually local, but I have interstate and international wedding clients. My favourite wedding was definitely the Vegas wedding I shot of Sticks and Stones when they got married … it was pretty incredible,” she says of the iconic shot of the couple in the desert she has become renowned for. Her show reel of highlights includes a feature in a national magazine and published work on popular wedding blogs, including UK blog Rock n Roll Bride and bride favourite Hello May. “It’s kind of a bit surreal. Growing up, you kind of feel like you have to have a proper job. I don’t feel like I have a proper job, I’m having too much fun to be paid for this! “There are some incredibly talented creatives in the fashion industry on the Sunshine Coast and I think it’s definitely be a force to be reckoned with … it seems to be at the forefront, with a lot of trendsetters, and bloggers and designers.”

It’s this collective crowd where inspiration for Janneke stems from, and her yearning to stay true to her rawness, her fun side, her spontaneity and her talent. That, and travel. “Going overseas, the landscapes are just so different … it gets me really excited to shoot. It’s a good place to get some perspective, get re-inspired to shoot a bit more and get back into the swing of things. Lately I’ve been away, I went to Africa for a month on a holiday, and I’ve been away to the States for two weeks as well on a road trip,” she says. It’s this trip back to Africa that has led Janneke down the path of a special venture. “I’m going to do a personal project, which I’m hoping to do by the end of the year inspired by Africa … there might be a book or exhibition involved,” she says, smiling somewhat secretively. Janneke’s photography style is distinct, from her unique method of capturing moments, to the way she edits her work. “Lately I’ve been shooting a bit more film on 35mm, but weddings I shoot on a Canon 5D MK3 and a stack of lenses, a polaroid and a couple of film cameras.” It’s her love for bringing back the authenticity and excitement of a process from yesteryear, paying homage to traditional photography. “We get so caught up with the digital age and everyone wants things straightaway. Where did all of that go … it’s just been lost somewhere,” she says. The words of an old soul? Maybe, but Janneke speaks from her heart. “I’m young at heart, I don’t want to get old, but I love getting old in the way that I’m learning more about myself,” she imparts. profilemag.com.au

PROFILE FUTURE

WORDS ANNA RAWLINGS PHOTOS REBECCA SMITH

FROM THE SCHOOLYARD TO AUSTRALIAN FASHION’S BIGGEST CATWALKS, THIS SUNSHINE COAST TEENAGER IS A SUPERMODEL IN THE MAKING. FRESH FROM HIS LATEST RUNWAY APPEARANCE, KAWANA LOCAL RUANUI DALTON TAKES IT ALL IN HIS STRIDE AND SITS DOWN WITH ANNA RAWLINGS TO SHARE HIS JOURNEY SO FAR.

A

mong the parade of handsome male models striding down the catwalk at a Sydney Myer fashion show in early 2014, one in particular made an impact. Standing at over six feet tall, exuding an exotic high fashion look with his piercing dark eyes, sharp cheekbones and chiseled jaw, Ruanui Dalton is clearly model material. He’s the young gun teenage fashion model taking on the big players as he puts his best foot forward on the catwalk. From appearing alongside one of Myer’s biggest faces, model and TV host Kris Smith, in the Myer Spring / Summer fashion collections launch to being nominated as a national magazine’s bachelor of the year, Ruanui (Rui) is a homegrown talent and a future superstar. His striking, unique looks, thanks to his half Serbian / half Maori heritage, and laidback attitude has driven him to the forefront of the model scene since being discovered as a high school student just over a year ago. Rui has his own model ‘story of discovery’. A school friend’s aunt, who was a photographer, took some snaps of Rui before sending the images on to a friend, the owner of a model management agency. The photos she captured fit the unique, edgy look the agency was searching for and Rui was signed soon after, while still in grade 12. It was a fast-track to fashion fame for the 18-year-old who grew up in Sydney as part of a large extended family before relocating permanently 74

to the Sunshine Coast more than four years ago. In 2014 alone, Rui walked for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane, completed a catwalk show for the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre and appeared on the runway at the Mercedes-Benz Sydney Fashion Week and the Myer fashion show in Sydney. Of the experience of striding along a catwalk under the glare of spotlights and the influential front row, Rui is surprisingly calm, exuding the confidence of a more seasoned model. “The adrenalin kicks in once everyone starts going,” he shares. The day after our interview Rui is flying to Melbourne for a scheduled meeting with an agency there, aiming for another contract to add to his current representation – Chic Management in Sydney and Dallys Model Management in Brisbane. It’s just another flight and just another meeting in his now-typical jetsetting schedule. Rui transits back and forth to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane on a regular basis. “There’s not many modelling opportunities here, that’s why most of my work is in the big cities. I plan to move to Sydney or Melbourne this year but I’ll have to see how everything goes,” he says. Rui has also had a taste of the Big Apple, flying to New York in 2013 to cast for work opportunities. The process saw him line up in front of eagle-eyed scouts and threw him a learning curve ball. “I just signed with an agency over there and they flew me down because

RUANUI DALTON

they thought I’d get some work. I had really long hair at the time which was kind of limiting the work I could get, so after all the shows were finished they cut my hair!” Rui says. “I got way more work because of it … it was probably the best thing they ever did.” Back home, his family life is worlds away from the glitz and glamour of the fashion universe. It’s here at his home in Kawana where Rui swaps the tailored suits, style squad, intense photo shoot sessions and pumped-out bookings with a chilled lifestyle. It’s where he can be a teenager – surfing, hanging out with friends and playing basketball with his supportive family. “They’re all supporting me, at the start they were kind of bagging me out for being a male model, but it’s all cool now,” Rui smiles. “Mum is like my number one supporter.” In fact, Rui’s mum, Mirjana, did more than support him. She nominated him for this year’s Cleo Magazine’s Bachelor of the Year; Rui made the top 100, selected from thousands of the nation’s most eligible men. “She didn’t tell me until I actually made it in, her plan was to nominate me and see what happened. I made it through and she told me … I was excited, it’s pretty cool I guess!” he shares. And the accolades just keep rolling. In an industry notorious for young

models forking out thousands of dollars for their own portfolios, Rui has been exempt from paying for any shoots – his status and appeal as a rising talent placing him firmly in the lens of top photographers who fall over themselves for the chance to shoot him. He is still required to attend castings, but with his track record of securing bookings and reputation as a ‘big’ model, the process is really just a formality. “I guess I was really lucky getting into this business,” he says gratefully. “I wanted to do it for many years but didn’t really follow up on it.” And in fact, the industry has surpassed Rui’s wildest dreams. “I think it’s better than what I imagined, I thought I had to be on a diet, I thought I’d have to change my whole personality … but I’m still the same.” With personal portfolio goals including walking for the major international brands (think Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci, Versace, Adidas and Canterbury), with Calvin Klein at the top of the list, Ruanui is set for the big time. And if all goes to plan, he’ll be living la dolce vita in Spain or Italy as a sought-after male model. “I plan to become a supermodel so I’m trying to do whatever I can to get there,” he shares. Next big thing? You saw him here first!

I thought I’d have to change my whole personality … but I’m still the same.”

ON THE MORNING OF CATHY FORBES’ MAKEOVER SHE STEPS ONTO THE SCALES AND WATCHES THE NUMBERS FLICKER AND STOP AT 100KG. THE VIVACIOUS MOTHER-OF-TWO HAS LITERALLY WORKED HER BUTT OFF TO REACH THE MILESTONE, SHEDDING 36 KILOS AND COUNTING.

can keep up with her active husband and two teenage children who are very proud of her. “I feel amazing, this makeover is all about me and there aren’t many days in your life when things are all about you,” she says. “It’s been a dream and I feel pretty good in these clothes – when Profile showed me those photos I couldn’t believe it was me.” Now fitting into a size 16, Cathy has thrown away her old size 24 clothes and can’t stop smiling when she looks in the mirror.

athy Forbes presses the airline attendance button and grimaces in her seat, hoping no one is looking. She gingerly asks for a seat belt extension and can feel her cheeks flush at the request. Weighing in at 136kgs, Cathy vowed to make a change after that “mortifying experience” at the beginning of 2014. The shift to a low carb, high fat diet saw her drop a few kilos but she still had a long way to go. In September, Cathy won Profile Magazine’s makeover competition and was introduced to personal trainer Nicole Garcia. “I’ve never liked exercise before, except swimming, so going to the gym was a massive step for me,” she says. “Nicole has taught me to enjoy moving my body and how exercise works … I now love going to the gym and feeling my muscles and seeing my body shape change. Cathy, aged 44, is fitter and more fabulous and 76

Cathy has been doing a combination of HIIT (high intensity interval training) sessions, incorporating boxing and functional movement style circuits designed to improve energy levels and mobility. They combined these with gym sessions where they focused on resistance style training to help Cathy gain strength and muscle and lose weight. “It was also an important part of her training that Cath really listened to her body during training to ensure correct technique and engaging her body to work with her for optimal results,” Nicole says. “Cath already has a healthy approach to food, but we needed to increase her protein intake to feed her muscles, matching her training plan and all her hard work.” Special thanks to Anytime Fitness Nambour who have given Cathy access to the gym for three months to help her reach her goal weight of 75kgs. STYLING Sunshine Plaza

(City Chic, Mathers, Novo and Lovisa) Outfits from City Chic are in bright colours to make the most of her new body and newfound confidence. Cathy now has a much trimmer waist, defined legs and bust and the outfits emphasise her

positives and create the desired hourglass figure. The shoes and accessories have been paired back to match the clothes and the use of bigger earrings and shorter necklace from Lovisa accentuate the neckline and bring in her collarbones, meanwhile the shoes from Mathers and Novo have a medium heel to elongate Cathy’s legs. HAIR Ruby Blue Hair Boutique Cathy’s hair was blow dried to create volume and backcombed to give extra hold. Her hair was styled with a soft curl using an iron to create a look of feminine soft glamour. It is a style that is classic and can be worn for either a casual look or a more formal event. MAKEUP KJ Artistry Cathy’s makeup popped with a bold, bright red lip and neutral eye makeup framed with false lashes to accentuate the eyes. This is a look that could be used for a daytime event or taken into the evening with a darker or liquid eyeliner. BEAUTY aGlo Cathy had short, weak nails so they extended the length and used Bio Sculpture Gel to give her the immediate effect of long nails, whilst the gel nourishes her natural nails underneath allowing them to grow without any damage. In a few weeks her own nails will be stronger, longer and healthier. They used St Tropez spray tan to give Cathy the beautiful natural glow, and because of its long lasting and perfect brown colour she instantly felt slimmer, more confident and it helped hide any imperfections. The St Tropez tan will fade gradually and without any patchiness. profilemag.com.au

PROFILE SECRET LIFE

WORDS CARLY REES PHOTOS CHESTERTON SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY

WITH SUN-KISSED LOCKS AND TANNED SKIN, YOU COULD BE MISTAKEN FOR THINKING KAT HOGG WAS RAISED BESIDE THE SEA. BUT THIS SWIMWEAR DESIGNER HAILS FROM THE COUNTRY AND GOT HER FIRST TASTE OF SEA SALT AS A YOUNG TEENAGER. CARLY REES REPORTS.

A

s the ocean breeze tickles the skin of her back with each stroke in the crystal clear water, Kat Hogg is beyond excited. Powering through the waves in her Hive Swimwear Incognito Cropped Rash Top, she knows she has hit the jackpot with a design her followers will love. The swimwear designer doesn’t sell an item without testing it out on her surfboard first in the not-always-forgiving surf. She admits the ocean is not only the place where she goes to make sure the styles are perfect for the active sportswoman, but is also where she lets her mind wander and discover new bright prints and groundbreaking styles. It has been almost 10 years since the country girl followed her dream and discovered a niche in the surf fashion market, creating the brand Hive Swimwear. The brand has now gone international and is sold at 80 retailers across Australia. You could say it all began when she was 15-years-old and had her first taste of the beach. Kat had been living between Wandoan, Queensland and Brisbane and was invited on holiday to the Gold Coast with a friend. “I was like, ‘oh my! I am never going to the country again’,” laughs Kat.

I guess one of the biggest moments for me was actually seeing other people at my local beach wearing my swimwear.” From that moment Kat’s life was all about the sun, sand and surf and it wasn’t long before she fell in love with the rush of gliding through the water on a surfboard and found the Sunshine Coast. At 25, after travelling the world, her life goal was to move to Sunshine Beach and never leave. This she has stayed true to, living with her husband, Peter, who she met on the beach, and their fur-baby Kinta, just over the hill from the iconic Sunshine Coast beach. Living and breathing all things coastal, Kat worked her way up the chain at surf stores on Hastings Street, Noosa and managed a surf school business. It was at this time her future dynasty was born as herself and fellow women surfers came up against the same issue of finding the right cozzie to tackle the waves in. “Working in the surf industry I just kept hearing the repeated question of, ‘Oh what do you surf in?’ and ‘What do you have in store that is good for surfing?’,” says Kat. “In those days there wasn’t a lot and what was available was pretty much designed for a swimmer or someone doing surf sports and there was no fashion element to them. 78

profilemagazine

KAT HOGG

“That really got me thinking about creating something that was good for women to surf in and that looked a bit fashionable. The surf culture is quite cool so you don’t want to be wearing a navy blue swimsuit with really thick straps and get big tan lines.” Kat created a style by loosely combining the traditional bikini with athletic shapes and “meshed the two together” to create her first masterpiece – the Beehive. This style is still favoured by iconic water women today, such as pro surfers Serena Brooke and Sam Cornish, triathletes Emma Snowsill and Belinda Granger and aerials Olympic gold medalist Lydia Lassila. Kat’s design for passion and style was ignited when she was a little girl, and guided by her mother, Gloria, she learnt how to thread the bobbin, sew and create beautiful garments. “I was always a drawer,” says Kat. “Mum said when I was little I was always drawing house plans and she thought I would be some kind of architect or something, so I have always been fairly creative.” Kat made and designed clothes and with the help of her husband, set out to create a label. But when she hit her late 20s, she discovered a niche in swimwear and switched over from drawing clothes to drawing swimwear tops and bottoms. Kat is still overwhelmed to see local women enjoying her designs and to hear her collection is being spotted on television and across the globe. From international water sport competitions to the cast of Home and Away, Hive is becoming an Australian household name. For Kat, she simply gets a thrill from seeing local girls enjoying her designs. “One of the biggest moments for me was seeing other people at my local beach wearing my swimwear,” says Kat. “I still get such a buzz. I can go out surfing now or go to the beach and see 10 girls out surfing and wearing my togs.” profilemag.com.au

“F

ashion and style is not about trend, age or size. It’s about being true to who YOU are. It’s about feeling confident and expressing your unique personality. Whether you love bright colours or minimalist neutrals, being able to put something on which makes you feel fabulous is an amazing thing to do for yourself. It’s a way to celebrate being YOU!” And Nikki Parkinson would know. Winner of three national awards (including the 2013 Mamamia Clickable Women awards) for her blog Styling You, and now author of the best-selling book Unlock Your Style (Hachette) released earlier this year, Nikki is a wanted fashion mastermind. Yet she’s not your typical aloof / pale / skinny / drawn-out member of the fashion elite. Rather, Nikki is the kind of stylist you would dream of having as your best friend – someone who revels in every curve and every line, who loves to express with wild abandon through colour, form and texture, and who is playful in an industry of much seriousness. In short, Nikki is the perfect shopping partner. Instead of making those who come across her blog feel frumpy and uncool, Nikki instead delights in building the confidence of her fan base, making fashion and style accessible to all – demystifying its secrets, debunking its exclusive reputation and deflating its puffed-up pretentiousness. Nikki is all about real girl living. And there is nothing more refreshing. “Every woman can look and feel confident,” explains Nikki. “Style does not have to be a place of overwhelm, although for some, it does feel like that, which is why I started my blog six years ago and wrote my book. Fashion should be a place of fun and experimentation, art

and theatre. It’s not about having the perfect outfit or the perfect figure, whatever that is. It’s about nurturing yourself and feeling inspired. It’s about prioritising who you are.” Having started out as a print journalist, with a lengthy career that spanned over 20 years, Nikki was all too aware of the domination of the fashion industry by models.

We have to get dressed each morning, so why not ensure we feel ready to take on the world in doing so.” A sufferer of Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition which makes body weight very difficult to control, Nikki could not relate to the images of the wafer-thin youngsters in the media, and was confident she was not the only one. Feeling frustrated that more women were not represented, Nikki felt compelled to act, and in a huge leap of faith quit the newspaper rat race in favour of launching her own personal styling business, Styling You. Starting a blog in an era when blogging was barely a concept was a brave move, but one that was key in catapulting her to stardom. Before long, she had built a healthy fan base of followers who clung tightly to Nikki as a fashion life raft among a sea of styling sharks. As a result, in 2011, only a couple of years after launching the blog, Styling You was voted the Australian Writers’ Centre Best Australian Blog. The public had spoken – they couldn’t get enough of what Nikki was bringing to the landscape, a landscape that up until that time had been heavily dominated by high fashion editorial discussion on ‘classic’ beauty. Within another year, Nikki had signed with an agent, with her book deal an imminent reality. Recently listed as a Kidspot Voices of 2014 Hall of Fame blogger, Styling You now attracts over 94,814 users (unique visits) to the site every month and boasts a subscriber database of 12,440. It also has a combined social media following of over 69,000 loyal fans across Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram. Recently, Nikki has even been gracing our television screens on such programs as Channel Nine’s Mornings with Sonia and David. “It’s been a rollercoaster,” smiles Nikki. “And I am so grateful to everyone who has made this journey wondrous. I truly believe in the power of feeling good, so it’s a mission I’m proud to champion. “Our lives are busy. We have careers, kids, relationships, social appointments, school dates, and family admin to keep up with, amongst a whole host of other things. But we should always remember to care about ourselves too in that list. We have to get dressed each morning, so why not ensure we feel ready to take on the world in doing so.”

MEN AND FASHION, IS THAT AN OXYMORON? MAYBE A COUPLE OF DECADES AGO, BUT THESE DAYS SOME OF THE LADS WOULD RIVAL THE LADIES WHEN IT COMES TO STYLE. I CAUGHT UP WITH SIX LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS AND POSED THE QUESTION, “DO REAL MEN CARE ABOUT FASHION?”. THE RESULTS WERE HILARIOUS!

I

knew a conversation about fashion with a group of lively lads over lunch was going to be good fun, but I had no idea just how entertaining these gents would be, or the fact I would leave with sore stomach muscles from laughing so hard at some of their very candid responses. Covering all manner of fashion related topics from their biggest fashion faux pas to their manscaping rituals, let’s just say some of their answers were a little cheeky (pardon the pun!). Joining me for lunch at Grill’d Maroochydore was the Sunshine Coast’s best dressed man and owner of Century 21 Buderim, Grant Smith; owner of Kiss Cars, Michael Delahunty, owner of Kubartz Catering Company Michael Riley; co owner of Tanawha house Grant Agnew, owner of Bundilla Dry Cleaners David Mares and last but not least Hamish McMichael of Kaizen Training. profile: Do men really like to dress up? hamish: I do, but I have noticed that no one, apart from Grant Smith, gets dressed up on the Coast. It’s quite good fun when you have an event to get dressed up for. I find the girls dress up more though, the guys don’t. grant smith: I don’t think we are given the opportunity. We are told we don’t dress up. Formal attire on the Sunshine Coast is your good jeans! grant agnew: I find when I go to Brisbane for a meeting the attire is a shirt and tie at least. On the Sunshine Coast you drop the tie and jacket. michael riley: I have always told my kids to dress for the occasion. The girls always tend to dress up but the guys don’t, I think the gap needs to close. Without sounding old fashioned, I think it’s about showing some respect to the girls. If my wife dresses up for an event, I would feel disrespectful to her not to dress up. grant smith: But remember you are not looking formal just because you are in a suit that is 10 times too big. summer holiday issue

profile: Who buys your clothes gents, you or your partner? michael riley: My partner doesn’t come with me or shop with me. It’s a cathartic experience for me. I usually go when it’s quiet on a Monday or Tuesday when I have a few hours to spend. I think my wife trusts me to choose well. michael delahunty: I almost insist on my wife buying my clothes for me. She gets angry with me though because I won’t try things on. I know my size. If it says size 40, it’s perfect. If she thinks it looks good I agree with her taste. She is much more fashion conscious than me. grant agnew: My wife Beatrice is a designer, so she has much better fashion sense than me and she knows the best fabrics to choose. The problem is I have two teenage boys who are a similar size, so they tend to steal my clothes! grant smith: I don’t think anyone would be game enough to buy me clothing. I love clothes shopping but I have to be in the mood for it. david: I totally trust my wife Bambi’s taste. She knows what she likes to see me in. I don’t like shopping centres. The quicker I can get out of them the better. Bambi has got used to me over the years. She lines me up towards a men’s wear store and they get the whole deal! It’s great for them. Don’t get me wrong I love dressing up and I love wearing the clothes once they’re fitted but I find the process of shopping for them and trying them on painful. I am sure they build shopping centres for women not men. michael delahunty: I agree, otherwise there would be a Super Cheap Auto and Bunnings! profile: Is it ever ok to wear white socks with dress pants? grant smith: No. Never. There is no excuse for that! michael delahunty: Nor is it ok to wear black socks with shorts! hamish: That is up there with crocs! grant smith: Also up there with big chunky man sandals! Why are they still selling them?

profile: How long does it take you to get ready for a night out? michael delahunty: Not long at all. If the event is at 7pm, I am not getting ready at 5pm. david: Yep, that was sorted out early in our marriage. I get ready 10 minutes before we go. grant smith: I like to get ready just before I walk out the door. hamish: It’s a waste of time. I don’t mind how long women take but I certainly wouldn’t take that long. profile: What do you find fashionable in a woman? grant smith: Heels after five. Doesn’t have to be a stiletto but keep the ballet flats for the school run. michael riley: A bit of modesty. Less is more. michael delahunty: A woman who is comfortable with what she is wearing is very appealing. hamish: I definitely agree with heels after five. It doesn’t matter what she wears. If she has confident energy, I think that’s pretty attractive. david: I agree. If a lady carries an outfit with confidence it doesn’t matter what she’s wearing. profile: What has been your biggest fashion faux pas? hamish: Crocs. Just crocs. I don’t need to say any more! david: I don’t have one because Bambi makes the fashion decisions. michael riley: Going to nightclubs in the 80s there are too many to mention, from Cuban heels to all denim. Surprisingly, I didn’t seem to do too well with the ladies. grant smith: The satin boxers with my butt hanging out. I tried to block that out of my mind but it just came flooding back! michael delahunty: Denim flares with a matching denim jacket. I thought it looked so good, I wore it everywhere. grant agnew: Short shorts and a muscle tee when I was younger. The other one was wearing a family tartan kilt to our wedding. Peer pressure has stopped me wearing speedos in public. That and having sand kicked in my face! hamish: Board shorts all the way. grant smith: Boardies for me. michael riley: I wear boardies at the beach and speedos at home. david: There was a big shift from speedos to boardies when they coined the phrase ‘budgie smugglers’. Men just bailed out. They were so popular in the '70s and '80s. michael delahunty: I wear boardies. I am not well endowed enough to pull off a pair of speedos! profile: What are your thoughts on manscaping, lads? grant smith: Get it off. I wax my face but clipper my body. david: Leave the wax away from me. I’m lazy. I have sensitive skin and don’t like shaving as it irritates me. Growing up, waxing for blokes was unheard of. The only ones that got away with it were the bodybuilders but now it is very acceptable. grant smith: No one wants to go fossicking for anything. If there is that much hair, you probably owe it to your partner to remove it! hamish: I never went there until two years ago but now I do. I am a naturally hairy bloke so I clipper my whole body both for looks and comfort. I look back on photos and think I probably should have done it 15 years ago! michael riley: I do a little bit. I just think hair on the back and neck is not a good look. You feel better about yourself. And it doesn’t go unnoticed by my wife. michael delahunty: I’m a clipper not a waxer. Put it this way, if you keep the bushes around your deck trimmed your deck looks larger! david: Where do you stop though? grant smith: You don’t. You start at the ankles and work your way up. Needless to say, at this point of our lunch date the chuckles from the group of ladies at the table next to us was testament to our colourful conversation and as we bid our farewells, the lads admitted that it was probably the only time they had openly discussed their manscaping habits with a bunch of blokes and enjoyed it as well. One thing is certain though, when it comes to fashion, it seems real men do care about fashion! Regardless of whether they are dressed by their partner or otherwise, the lads love an excuse to dress up just as much as the ladies. Cheers to that!

GRILL’D, MAROOCHYDORE

Having always been big fans of the Grill’d Restaurant chain, my husband and I were delighted when Grill’d opened its doors at the Sunshine Plaza, Maroochydore 18 months ago. Located in the heart of the outdoor food court, and boasting a perfectly elevated deck to watch the world go by, it is a very welcome and popular addition to the foodie hub. Owners, husband and wife team David and Cheryl Giles made a big impression during our first visit to the restaurant not long after they opened. Warm and welcoming, the food and service was top class and that hasn’t changed since. Wearing his trademark red bandana on the day of our visit, David was the consummate host as always. Grill’d was the perfect spot for the hungry bunch of lads too, with a plethora of mouth-watering burgers on offer, the options are endless. After much deliberating, we finally made our choices, with many of the lads already having their favourites in mind. The Crispy Bacon and Cheese was a popular choice, as was the Simon Says and Summer Sunset. I opted for the vegetarian option – my falafel burger was to die for. Fresh and bursting with flavour, it really hit the spot. David also treated us to some delicious sweet potato chips (touted as the best on the Coast) and the brand new and very moreish Zucchini chips. Served with aioli and hot chilli dipping sauce, the chunky morsels were the perfect accompaniment to our burgers. A healthy option to a traditional “fast food” burger, Grill’d challenges the idea of burgers being low in nutrition and high in fat. Their burgers are made the old-fashioned way using only the freshest of local ingredients. Every burger is made to order and flame grilled in front of you when you place your order (not before). Grill’d now offer a new low carb bun, with just 9 grams of carbs per bun. Pop in and see David, Cheryl and the team and try one of the delicious healthy burgers for lunch or dinner seven days a week. Grill’d Maroochydore are also fully licensed and have a great value kids menu. Sunshine Plaza Riverwalk (near the cinemas) Maroochydore Ph: 5443 6000 profilemag.com.au

IT WAS THE CALL OF THE COAST AND THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY THAT GAVE LILYA DESIGNER AND FOUNDER LISA CHEDANNE A FRESH START. HERE SHE OPENS UP ABOUT HER TRANSITION FROM THE BUZZ OF SYDNEY BACK TO HER HOMETOWN, HER ‘WORKING MOTHER GUILTS’ AND THE BEAUTY OF NEW BEGINNINGS.

86

profilemagazine

s Lisa Chedanne explains the quintessential ‘LILYA girl’ – the women she sees wearing her beloved label – to me, I realise the effortlessly stylish blonde designer could almost be describing herself. “The typical LILYA girl I’d say is relaxed, healthy, pretty happy with herself, carefree ... a beautiful, natural girl, not much makeup, being elegant and pretty. She could be anywhere between 20 to 40 or older. She’s earthy, not fancy.” Lisa carefully admits, “that is kind of my vibe.” She truly is the embodiment and best advocate for her label, fitting the bill perfectly to reflect her vision of luxe statement pieces inspired by nature, music, world travels and bohemia to revel in an aesthetic of freshness, relaxation and timelessness. It was trading her vibrant, fast-paced lifestyle in Sydney to seek family and fulfilment on the Sunshine Coast that led Lisa to the decision to follow her heart and deposit a little bit of herself back in her life bank after a frenetic, yet invaluable career down south. From an early foray into retail after graduating from her Sunshine Coast high school, Lisa bought into the Sydney lifestyle, working in high end stores and as a buyer before a brief stint as a cosmetics manager, and a short break in London before returning to her true calling – fashion. Head-hunted in Sydney by the chief executive officer of Louis Vuitton while working at Giorgio Armani, it’s clear Lisa exuded the essence of high fashion from the get-go, and it wasn’t long before she was swept away in a whirring hum of glamour and style. In her late 20s Lisa found herself representing labels as a brand manager, before launching her own fashion agency around 2004, which still runs today, a complement to LILYA.

profilemag.com.au

“My life was always super exciting, meeting lots of people, travelling, it was going out a lot, very fast paced,” she shares. Living at the beach in Bondi while running her fashion agency saw Lisa begin to design her own label, quietly introducing a rack of her own brand in her showroom. “I was actually quite anti-selling. This is my personality – I was embarrassed a little bit!” Lisa admits to downplaying her designs. “I’m not a trained designer … my ideas come out of practicality, retail experience, maybe having a good eye … just liking a certain look and sticking with it,” she says. “I got crazy, way bigger orders on my first season, which I didn’t anticipate and then the stores that sold it, sold it well,” Lisa shares of the multi-brand boutiques who flocked to stock her threads. It was an unassuming, authentic approach to launching a fashion label, running in the same laidback vein as Lisa’s vision for her designs. But before too long, Lisa wanted to shake up the wardrobe, inject some new inspiration and delve back to her grassroots. It was time to start a new chapter. “I moved home because I was getting a bit older, I was married at the time, I wanted to build a house, have a family. My family’s here and as you get older you realise your family is more important,” Lisa imparts. In 2009, Lisa and her then-husband returned home. Lisa soon implemented a team to assist her – she now has two full time staff, and one social media / digital marketing strategist one day per week. Lisa is truthful and open, admitting she sometimes misses her old life, but, “I’ve got my work which I throw myself into.” Today, the core essence of the label remains true – Lisa experiments with her sketches, trying different designs on for size, yet keeps the identity of Lilya (www. ilovelilya.com) at the forefront. Her own authenticity speaks for itself, as Lisa shares the imperfections that shape her. “Self-doubt … I might be on a roll and think ‘I’m on fire’ but every now and then you have a little wobble. People are judging you on what you put out there … and you are susceptible to rejection,” she muses. “I have no work / life balance! It’s overly absorbing,” Lisa adds, opening up about her belief that this may have been part of the reason for the breakdown of her marriage, currently in a separation period. “I have the ‘mother guilt’ but I’m happy to be a working mother. I love working and I think it’s good for him to have a working mum,” she says, referring to her adorable toddler son, Cole, as she raises and nourishes his little life from their beachside home, along with her treasured staffy pup. But then that keen zest kicks back in, and Lisa admits her personality doesn’t allow for time out. And with a business with over 100 stockists spread throughout Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, not to mention cash flow to maintain, it’s little wonder this style maker has little down time. “You need a bloody good head to have a successful fashion label,” she says. “Yes, you have to have a creative mind but it’s a money making venture, you have to make profits, have it in the right stores and be loyal, have to deliver on time – there are so many different levels to having a clothing label.” From someone who treads in the realm of the globe’s biggest fashionistas, Lisa is refreshingly down to earth. “When I do most things I don’t really push myself it’s more about the label than me,” she says, reluctantly. “I just want a sustainable business, my goal for the future is to step back a little bit … but I’m not ready to let go of that yet!” Lisa is also planning to ‘test the water’, working with local boutique Alterior Motif to open a concept pop up store in Hastings Street, Noosa over summer stocking LILYA and a range of other labels including Bassike, Sass and Bide and One Teaspoon. “I know how much extra work that means for me!” she laughs. But the payoff is something money can’t buy. “My biggest compliment is seeing people wearing the clothes,” Lisa says. “When I see someone quintessentially LILYA wearing my outfit the way it’s meant to be worn, to get the simplicity of it … it’s not a high fashion label, it’s a label where you need to understand understatement and so if someone understands that and wears it simply and beautifully I am over the moon – that’s my biggest compliment.”

I love working and I think it’s good for him to have a working mum.”

HEALTH LIVEWELL NOT SHARING IS CARING with Dr Simone Ricketts I advise family and friends not to share toothbrushes, hairbrushes, lipsticks or drink bottles. You should have your own toothbrush, don't use anyone elses! It's better not to brush for a day, rather than share a toothbrush. Rub some toothpaste around your teeth instead. Remember to store toothbrushes separately so that they do not touch other toothbrushes. Store toothbrushes in a clean, dry, airy place so that they will dry out between each use. Tooth decay and gum disease bacteria are easily spread from person to person by sharing drink bottles or toothbrushes. Babies are born with no decay-producing bacteria in their mouths. They are infected by sharing drink bottles, cutlery, toothbrushes etc. Sharing hairbrushes risks sharing head lice, while sharing lipsticks risks sharing herpes cold sore viruses. There are many bacteria and viruses in our environment just waiting for an opportunistic moment to spread and multiply. Dentists in Australia are particularly obsessive with excellent infection control procedures and protocols in everyday dental practices. This is not always the case in overseas countries. You may be lucky to avoid a chronic infection or you may not. It's always a gamble. Hepatitis C and tuberculosis are common outside of Australia in parts of Asia and both can be spread in a dental/medical setting if infection control procedures are not taken seriously. In Australia, all surgical items are disposable or autoclavable. We would not consider any other alternative method. Remember, sometimes not sharing is the most caring thing we can do for family and friends! Smile by Design, Maroochydore | 5443 2888 dentist@smilebydesign.net.au

IS ADRENAL BURNOUT DIMINISHING YOUR DAILY ENERGY? with Jodi Chapman Are you sleeping longer hours, up to nine to 10 hours per night, and still tired on waking? Is your sleep broken, with bouts of sweating through the night? Is your memory slowly diminishing and concentration levels low? Do you need to sleep in the afternoon almost daily to get through the evening, only to crash again around 8pm each night? Each day feels like a marathon, with the most basic of daily tasks becoming a massive effort. These are all symptoms of severely depleting an essential hormone, known as the “mother” adrenal hormone or DHEA. This hormone goes on to make your testosterone, oestrogen and progesterone through your adrenal glands, so depletion can also cause hormonal imbalances. Adrenal burnout can take from months up to years to recover from, with careful rebuilding of the adrenal and hormonal system, but the consequences of this condition are far worse than the initial fatigue you suffer. DHEA plays a major role in so many functions of your body, that it can cause a dramatically ageing effect if depleted. DHEA deficiency is often the cause of muscle wastage, and loss of muscle and bone strength, excess fat deposition, and eventually may lead to osteoporosis. Low DHEA has also been known to be a common factor amongst patients diagnosed with a wide range of cancers, Alzheimer’s or dementia. Other symptoms can be low mood, depression, anxiety, low libido, low motivation and feelings of sadness or lack of joy in daily life. Repairing this situation requires a balanced nutritious diet with plenty of good fats and proteins, as these are the building blocks of corticosteroids, which go on to make your adrenal hormones. Stress management, specific nutrients, and plenty of rest are also essential in regaining your adrenal function. With the right care, and a sound knowledge of how your body functions, what your body needs and knowing how much rest you as an individual requires is essential to maintain peak levels of energy and strength for optimal performance long term. ASHLEIGH JENSEN POSSESSES THE ABILITY TO BE A CHANGE-MAKER. THE WELLNESS AMBASSADOR HAS UNEARTHED STRENGTH FROM SUFFERING AND NOW THERE’S NO STOPPING HER.

A

quick scroll through Ashleigh Jensen’s Instagram and you will notice it is filled with delicious vegan recipes and treats, fitness posts and shots of the stylish, model-esque blonde herself. But Ashleigh isn’t just another lifestyle blogger; her genuine approach to inspire women with her belief in the powers of food as medicine for the soul is the core truth of beauty not just being skin deep. I meet with the bright, super-healthy wellness advocate over coffee and green tea to chat about her journey to popular blogger and Instagrammer, becoming such a figure of online health inspiration that she was listed on Lorna Jane’s 'Top 10 Instagram girls you need to follow', collaborates with various wellness brands, and is now sharing her lifestyle with over 7000 people on Instagram alone. Given her quick ascendence to the heights of such foodie fame, it’s clear Ashleigh’s remarkable transformation and fun, fearless approach to a healthy way of life is resonating with her followers. After growing up on the Sunshine Coast before finishing school to travel overseas as a lifeguard in San Diego and Costa Rica, Ashleigh had always lived a relatively healthy life. When she returned home, she worked in various industries, still seeking a passion. “I always said to myself, I wish I could be good at something and make a career out of it,” Ashleigh remembers. “So many of my friends would ask for my health advice. It finally clicked, I do have an interest in health in my daily life and improving my own health, but I also like helping other people improve their life,” she says. It would come so naturally to her too - this was a girl who refused to buy into the latest diet crazes, often finding herself online pouring over scholarly articles and stockpiling research in response to hearing about the newest diet trends. Ashleigh had never thought she was a “study person” but found herself enrolling in a Bachelor of Health Promotion at the University of the Sunshine Coast, with a focus on creating healthy public policy. Then, utilising the power of the online world, Ashleigh launched her Instagram page and branched out to grow her profile organically through her website and blog (www.wholesome-living.com.au), and recently started a YouTube channel with recipe tutorials. profilemag.com.au

Ashleigh aims to dispel the common misconception that preparing healthy food takes a lot of time. “I would say most of my meals take no longer than 20 minutes to prepare … it takes probably longer to get into your car and go through drive-through!” “Bananas, apples – that’s fast food to me!” And she certainly practices what she preaches, following a vegan lifestyle since early 2014, a result of the damage of a strict protein-heavy and low carbohydrate diet she was following to prepare for her entry into fitness model competitions. “Even though I looked good I felt like it wasn’t worth the sacrifice, I felt low on energy and even though I was getting where I wanted physically, it was leaving me mentally drained.” So Ashleigh began to look for other options, researching the harmful effects of common bodybuilding diets, before adopting a vegan lifestyle in time for her final two competitions in the INBA Bikini model divisions. She is now a firm advocate for a plant-based lifestyle. “The first time around I was weighing every little thing down to the gram and now I just eat unlimited fruit and vegies. I think the way people are designed to eat is to just thrive on fruit and vegetables and not be deprived. I think you should live a life of abundance rather than a life of restriction,” Ashleigh says. “I always ‘bagged’ the vegan lifestyle before I tried it myself. I used to say that’s not healthy, people are being brainwashed … it wasn’t until I took the time to research and see the health benefits, I thought, ‘I want to be a part of that’.” However, Ashleigh’s relationship with food and her promotion of a healthy body image wasn’t always this sunny. As a young teenager, Ashleigh started modelling and after facing criticism from grown women telling the 13-year-old with prominent ribs to lose more weight, developed an eating disorder. Anorexia nervosa took hold and Ashleigh began to restrict her food consumption and take even more drastic measures. As Ashleigh shares the lengths she went to, my heart aches for the vulnerable young girl and the unimaginable pain she put herself through. “I would say, ‘Oh, I don’t feel well, I’m going to stay home from school’. I used to live in Alex, so I’d wait for Mum to leave home for work and I’d go out and just walk up and down the hills for like six hours with no food,” she says. “In winter I wouldn’t wear any clothes to bed, and have no sheets on or anything, and shiver and thought that was burning more calories. I would sleep on plastic in summer to sweat as I thought that would burn more calories.” By the time she was 15, Ashleigh struggled to get out of bed or go to school. “I look back at it now and I think, ‘far out, what the hell was going through my head, where did I think the finish line was going to be?’ “People can think it’s an attention thing or you’re doing it as a game but it is a mental illness and I don’t believe you ever fully get over it, you just learn how to do it differently.” And do it differently she has. Now in her early 20s, Ashleigh is taking back control, making her journey her own and inspiring others to do the same. “I think being strong is so much more appealing than being skinny,” she shares. Ashleigh smiles, “Yesterday I was going to the beach and I looked at myself in the mirror and I thought, I am really happy, I have my dream body. “At this point in my life I’m healthy, I have energy, I’m fit, I’m strong, I’m lean and they’re all the boxes I want to tick. I’ve reached the point now where I look at myself and I am happy. “That’s what I want other people to achieve as well.” summer holiday issue

EAT BETTER AND MOVE MORE. IT SOUNDS LIKE AN EASY MANTRA TO FOLLOW BUT IT HAS SLIPPED BY THE WAYSIDE AS SOCIETY TRIES NEW FADS TO COVER UP UNHEALTHY HABITS. SUNSHINE COAST PERSONAL TRAINER NICOLE GARCIA IS HELPING PEOPLE GET BACK TO BASICS AND ON THE ROAD TO BETTER HEALTH.

icole Garcia lifts a two-litre water bottle to her pursed lips and takes a swig. It’s a motion I immediately pick up on as I am lucky to drink one glass of water a day. I make the mistake of revealing this deep dark secret and Nicole doesn’t miss a beat in pointing out my wrong-doing. But there’s something different in Nicole’s delivery about healthy living – it’s stripped back, real and honest. “I became so passionate about basic changes,” she says. “What we thought was a good diet and what was a good diet correlated differently. I had a really relaxed attitude towards what was being put in my food and what I ate. I thought it must be, on some level, okay. I realised you have to take responsibility for yourself – just because it’s on a packet saying it’s all super healthy, it is not always. “The biggest thing that is happening with our health now and what was occurring when I was a kid is our ‘sometimes foods’ are now our everyday foods, they’re our every meal foods. Takeaway meals once-off are okay, they’re treat meals but we don’t treat them like that, they’ve become everyday staple foods. And that’s where I try and get my clients to change little bits at a time, we start with one meal and we work from there.” Nicole also focuses on getting our bodies moving the way they were designed to through functional, strength and resistance training. “We sit down all the time, it’s how the world has been designed, we don’t have to do a lot,” she says. “It’s getting people to do the functions we were designed to do.” The mum of three boys, 10-year-old Jett, five-year-old Ashton and two-year-old Mason started her fitness journey after giving birth to her youngest son. Like many others, she had been in and

out of gyms but had a misconception she was healthy because she wasn’t overweight. Also working as a training paramedic, Nicole was always on the go and thought this was enough, but it wasn’t. “I didn’t tune into my body,” she says. “After I had my youngest son I realised how poor my body felt because I was looking after my husband and two other kids and working full time, I got to the point where I couldn’t keep going.” That’s when Nicole joined the gym again, but this time she got the bug and took her training to the next level. “I started feeling really good and then I did a bit of training with Lisa Curry on the weekend,” she says. “I wanted to push myself and I wanted to do a fitness competition to completely change my comfort zone.” Throughout her body sculpting training with well-known personal trainer Odette Lydford, Nicole became more aware of health and nutrition and craved knowledge. She also wanted to pass that on through her blog Mummy Does Squats. “It all compounded and made me more aware of nutrition and how important it is and it made me rethink everything,” says Nicole. So she switched her paramedics degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast to start a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics. Her new mission? “I’m going to help people in a different way”. Nicole coupled her university degree with a Certificate 3 and 4 in personal training to maximise her knowledge in fitness and nutrition.

While Nicole is working closely with her client base, she is also educating local school kids through her role as the Sunshine Coast ambassador for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. “It’s great for the community, because people are getting back to the markets, back to the local businesses and doing all those things,” she says. “That’s my passion, getting people back to basics – basic movement, basic food education. “I think people get lost in the volume of information, you read one women’s health magazine and by the end you’re confused. Because it’s just all too overwhelming people stick to what they know. You only have to look around to notice our medical centres are full, and their are hoards of people at the pharmacy. We’re not a healthy-looking society. “I like working with people to find the confidence in what works for them because when you feel unhealthy or unwell or overweight, your self esteem drops and you very easily turn back to where you were, those patterns are hard to break. “These days everything that is sold to us is quick – we get abs in five minutes, take this pill and you’ll be skinny, everyone is used to a quick fix so when you explain it takes 12 weeks or 12 months, depending on what people’s challenges are, they think it’s so much time but it’s really not, it’s just changing that mindset. The healthier you are, the more energy you have and the more you get done, that’s the flow-on effect.”

That’s my passion, getting people back to basics – basic movement, basic food education.”

fter five years of recycling French shabby chic and vintage furniture for the sheer love of it, Jenny Regeling was faced with a life-changing moment. Struggling to grip the sanding block and sandpaper due to arthritis in her hands, Jenny almost had to give up her passion. “I realised, in my frustration, that I had to make something more useable and effective, so I could continue doing what I loved to do,” says Jenny. Through creativity and determination, she created ‘Sandi Hands’, sanding gloves to suit renovation, restoration, building, recycling and more. The gloves, originally intended for Jenny’s personal use, have now become a marketable product, both nationally and internationally. However, I have now found it is useful for any hands – young or older, arthritic or not! profile: What inspires you? jenny: When ‘you know, you know’, and I believe if you are working at something you love doing, you will be inspired to succeed. Simply enjoying marketing my own invention to help others, inspires me! profile: How would you describe your design style? jenny: My design style is a combination of French shabby chic, vintage and eclectic styles. I love recycling with style. profile: What is your design philosophy or motto? jenny: First you fall in love with your treasure find; then you love to imagine its destiny. Lastly you lovingly breathe new life into your piece, to be loved all over again! profile: What is the most important lesson you have learned about business? jenny: After giving up too many times, I now know to “never give up” – believe in and love yourself and your business, and you will succeed! profile: What design trends do you think will last? jenny: Any design trend that is genuine, has character and a history and is a comfort to someone, will last forever! I do believe that is why the recycle and restoration industry is growing – every piece tells a story! profile: Any advice for someone starting out? jenny: Find your passion! Ask for help and advice; have good solid mentors and never look back, even when the tough times hit – they are the “characterful stepping stones” that build you and your business!

THREE, TWO, ONE, HAPPY NEW YEAR! THOSE THREE WORDS HANG IN THE AIR AS YOUR MIND RACES WITH THE EXCITEMENT OF HOPES AND DREAMS AND PLANS FOR A FRESH START IN 2015. BUT WHY DO WE SET RESOLUTIONS AND WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF GOALS? NICOLE FUGE FINDS OUT FROM FOUR VERY DIFFERENT LOCAL BUSINESS WOMEN.

A

s the clock strikes midnight on 1 January, in the midst of cheers and well wishes, your thoughts suddenly turn to the list of resolutions you made a few weeks ago. Promises of eating better, exercising more and spending more time with your loved ones. We all have the best intentions of keeping them, but for most of us they are broken within a month. But there are some people who do succeed in sticking to their goals, so what’s their secret? I had the pleasure of getting to know four beautiful business women on the Coast over a delicious five-course lunch at BV Pizzeria and Wine Bar at Kawana Island, to talk New Year’s resolutions. My guests were Renee Blackwell from Renee Blackwell Jewellery Design, Teressa Fisk from The Cheeky Wholesome Mumma, Cathy Maguire from Green Apple Organising and Lynn Levitt from Think Money. profile: Do you make New Year’s resolutions? renee: No I don’t. lynn: I don’t either. cathy: I do but I don’t make huge goals and I don’t get upset if they fall over. Getting fit is a big one for me because I was in the Army for a long time so I was very fit, now I’ve got two kids and a husband who works shift work, so it’s a lot harder. So every year that’s a standard one for me. I don’t set goals I’m going to feel bad about if don’t achieve them. teressa: I’m not so much about setting New Year’s resolutions but I’m always resetting goals and writing out new plans. There’s always something new coming up.

cathy: I don’t think anyone expects them to stick, I think it’s a starting point for the new year. If you start the right way you’ve got a better chance of being where you want to be. renee: I don’t know about New Year’s resolutions, but I believe in resolutions and goal setting. I think that’s important because otherwise every day just morphs into the next and suddenly a whole year’s gone by and you realise you were meant to do all these things and it doesn’t happen. The value of resolving to do something and setting goals to make that happen is really important. lynn: I don’t set resolutions in January. My husband and I do it on the first of December, we do it every quarter and we particularly do it in December so we don’t get caught up in the negativity of ‘I’ve failed’ after the New Year.

profile: Do New Year’s resolutions last? cathy: Usually I would say no but I think it’s good to make them, everybody wants a fresh start. I don’t know about anyone else but I love the new year because it’s a new diary, new ideas, you can work off what you did last year. teressa: I think they’re a good idea, I think sometimes we put unrealistic pressure on ourselves and then make unrealistic goals. I can’t say I’ve made one and stuck to it for longer than a couple of weeks, but since doing health coaching I’ve realised when you set yourself goals they have to be a bit more realistic. I think it’s a good idea to reset and start again.

profile: How do you keep your goals or resolutions? renee: Boring old organisation. lynn: I’m a big action chick so I’m not frightened of failing, if you don’t get the result you want then do something different … with resolutions, sometimes you set the resolution or you set the goal but people lose sight of the fact it’s actually not the attainment of the goal or the outcome, it’s what turns up along the way. The only way to get that is taking action. cathy: With my business plans I’ll stay up all night if I have to to get it done, personally if I don’t reach my goals, I just shrug it off and start again. teressa: Along with lists, I make vision boards and at the end of every three months I find most of the things I put on the board I’ve done or experienced and if there’s anything I haven’t done I carry it on. profile: Have there been any repeat resolutions? cathy: Fitness. But each year it can change. It doesn’t just mean get off the couch and go for a run, I want to take it to the next level. One year it was to run so many 10km fun runs, then it was to run a half marathon and then when you succeed at that, it feels really good. summer holiday issue

teressa: Fitness is one of the massive things that stays with me. I also always try to put in an activity that I haven’t tried yet. lynn: Creating wealth and setting financial goals is a consistent one for me. profile: Why do people make resolutions? lynn: There are some elements of life you like to know what you’re aiming at so you know when it turns up if it’s what you wanted … I do it to see if I can achieve it, but I don’t get hung up if I don’t. renee: It makes people feel better. cathy: It gives you fresh hope. New year, forget about what happened last year. profile: How to do you create change? teressa: I heard something the other day that really stuck with me, when you start feeling uncomfortable it means you’re about to break into something big, so now if I start to feel uncomfortable I keep pushing and it works every time. cathy: I think it’s something in your subconscious, it says ‘enough’ you’re not going to do this so I’m going to do this for you, you need to get off the ciggies or lay off the chips and lose some weight for your health. profile: Any silly resolutions you’ve made? lynn: I set one to stop drinking one year, that didn’t last long! cathy: To be more zen.

This was my first visit to BV Pizzeria and Wine Bar, but given I had been to Bella Venezia in Mooloolaba many times before and loved the food (owned by the same people) my standards were already high. From a first impression, the decor was unlike anything I’ve seen in a restaurant, there was so much attention to detail I felt as though I had stepped into a home magazine photo shoot. If that much care was taken with the aesthetics, imagine what the food was going to be like. We were greeted by celebrity chef Darren Simpson, who was going to be taking care of us, and that he did. Looking at the menu I couldn’t understand most of the words as it was in Italian, which was really refreshing to know we would be eating authentic Italian dishes. Our menu Piccolini: Sardinian crisp bread, pounded broad beans, Pecorino, mint; and deep fried dates, pancetta, celery seeds and almonds. Antipasti: Asparagi local asparagus, Gorgonzola dolce and marjoram. Risotto: Risotto alla Milanese: Vialone Nano rice, Vermouth, dill and saffron. Carne: Grilled aged rump of beef, organic beets, radicchio, horseradish and creme fraiche. Dolce: Maleny ice cream and sorbet trio and Nougat cheesecake with creme fraiche. Bellissimo! The food was exquisite and I was not alone in my critique. At the end of the lunch, as we were tucking into our dessert, with no more than a chorus of mmms, Darren came out to comment he’d never heard us so quiet all day! hat started as a school holiday job at her grandparent’s health food shop has turned into a lifelong passion of mixing delicious, raw muesli for people to enjoy. When Katie Barrett was a little girl, her grandmother whipped up a batch of gluten free muesli for her to try. “I avoid gluten, I feel better off it and I try and live as yeast free as I can,” she says. “I was sick all the time but the muesli helped me through a lot of that.” So when her grandparents retired, Katie moved from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast to continue their legacy and make small-batch muesli using their traditional recipes. “My grandparents have been making muesli with these recipes for the last 40 years and I had the idea of continuing on these mueslis for as long as I can remember,” Katie explains. “I am proud of the fact that my grandmother designed this for me 25 years ago. Not only that, but they’ve been tried and tested … my grandma started this in her natural food store, she was very much ahead of her time.

“I have 14 different blends at the moment, ranging from grain-free, paleo, gluten-free, yeast-free, nut-free, the list goes on. It’s very heartwarming to be able to talk to someone about their food intolerances and what they’ve been missing from their breakfast for so long.” For the last 12 months Katie has been selling her brkfst muesli at the Caloundra Street Fair and Kawana Farmer’s Market and recently branched out to stock her muesli cups at a handful of cafes across the Coast. “My wheat-free bircher muesli cups with Coyo yoghurt soaked in coconut water, and wheat-free bircher muesli with honey yoghurt soaked in coconut water are going really well,” she says. “I had one of the cafe owners try a cup at the market and asked if I could supply the cafe with them and it went from there, then another person tried it and contacted me and wanted it at their cafe.” While Katie’s brkfst muesli and cups are wildly popular, people just can’t get enough of her little brkfst supreme booster. “You sprinkle it onto whatever you want, it’s a little protein mixture of freshly ground nuts and seeds, so it’s a fresh nutty and seedy topper for yogurt or cereal or even used when doing a crumble for dessert,” she says. “I even use it in stuffed mushrooms - I’m selling a lot of it.” It’s no surprise brkfst is a venture that’s keeping Kate very busy. In fact, some days she is making muesli from dawn til dusk! “People keep commenting on how happy and smiley I look and they ask me for my secret - but the truth is no matter how long or rough my day has been, putting the final label on one of my bags of muesli makes me so very happy,” she says with a great big smile.

BE ACTIVE, BE NOURISHED, BE BALANCED, JUST BE U. KALI GRAY AND VANESSA COMAN EVOKE A GENTLE AND REALISTIC APPROACH TO ACHIEVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE – ALL WITHOUT THE GRIT, GRUNTS AND GRUMBLING TUMMIES.

H

aving spent the morning in the pool, Vanessa Coman suddenly became aware of her eau de chlorine scent when she stepped into Kali Gray’s office. But this meeting was important and the whiff could wait. A year later and the dynamic duo looks back on that fateful day and hearing Vanessa’s recollection, Kali quips, ‘you didn’t smell like chlorine!’ and they erupt into a cackle of laughter. Vanessa, the exercise physiologist and Kali, the dietician are on a mission to create a healthier community through a more holistic and reasonable approach. “When we came together we found our philosophies gelled very nicely and we started a program together with a joint nutrition and exercise focus and it has taken off,” explains Kali. Kali, aged 27, grew up as a vegan and was a dancer and says there was a period in her life where she felt driven by weight and diet. “When my dance career didn’t work out when I was 20, I was wondering what was left to do. And my dad suggested I become a dietician,” she says. Kali studied for five years before launching into private practise where she says she realised a lot of people were tangled in the yoyo diet mentality. “Dieting isn’t a solution, so I’ve ended up specialising in an area of dietetics, which is gentler and a kinder approach,” she says. Vanessa, aged 31, also had an active upbringing, involved in semi professional beach volleyball and water polo and was always training and hitting the gym once or twice a day. “It was my life and then injury struck when I was in my early to mid 20s and within two years I had knee surgery and shoulder surgery,” shares Vanessa. “There ended my sporting career, I couldn’t run, I couldn’t swim – I still can’t swim.” Vanessa’s weight blew out because she was used to eating whatever she wanted, “I was training and burning everything off and suddenly I didn’t recognise myself and so the cycle continued, I got sad and you dig your own hole.”

After studying exercise physiology, Vanessa worked as a high school physical education and sport science teacher for 10 years, before going back to exercise physiology and teaming up with Kali to form Be U (www.beu-way.com). “The people in our online program are getting amazing weight loss results and more importantly functional results and living the life they want to live, it’s been guilt free, it’s been painless, they still go out and enjoy themselves,” says Vanessa. “We’re wanting to create this community and share that with everyone else who is trying to lose weight and has health issues and are putting unrealistic pressures on themselves”. “Our motto is loving yourself healthy – so approaching health through a paradigm of self love and self care,” Kali explains. “We want to run online courses, home consultations and workshops for the Be U community. There needs to be a voice of reason in the health world.” Both Vanessa and Kali say achieving a healthier you is all about making small changes and consistency is key. “It’s not three massive gym sessions a week and nothing else in between, it’s just moving at every opportunity and finding joy in the movement again and having more of an active lifestyle rather than sitting on the couch,” says Vanessa. “People set themselves these ridiculous goals in weight loss,” says Kali. “I don’t believe there’s a band aid solution, particularly with women, it can be quite complicated in terms of their emotional relationships with food. Before we begin to change food habits, we need to look at how you’re currently thinking about food.” “I find myself having to re-educate people about their goals because they are quite aesthetic and weight loss focused ... you’re setting yourself up to fail, you’ve got to find that emotional link. You need to think what does this actually mean for me on a long term level?” summer holiday issue

+ Have an active social life and when you meet someone for coffee, grab it 'to go' and enjoy a long walk. + While watching television, take the ad break as your cue to stand up and walk around. + Limit sitting down to 20-minute lots – sitting down for an hour is worse for your health than smoking a cigarette and if you sit down for longer than two hours you’re turning your health backwards. + When it comes to treating yourself, it’s all about balance and moderation. The all-or-nothing mentality is a massive barrier because the guilt of eating something bad typically lends itself to over-indulgence. + If you want to lose weight, don’t diet. Research shows 95 per cent of people who go on a diet will lose weight within the first two years, within five years they gain that weight back and more.

ivio Caldarone may look familiar to the nation with his recent appearance on television screens as part of Channel 7’s 2014 season of Bringing Sexy Back, however to his friends and family, the now-fit and strong local is a new face after his transformation on the show. After failing to take proper care of his diet and exercise, the father-of-two experienced a significant weight gain over two years. In 2014, he was at his heaviest, struggling to keep up with the demands of his family and his busy role as chef at Jeromes Family Restaurant. “Having two very young children, I knew things had to change and they did!” says Livio. The opportunity arose when Livio was chosen to appear on Bringing Sexy Back after his sister secretly applied on his behalf. Following his incredible transformation and being coached by the popular TV series’ experts to improve his diet, fitness and lifestyle, Livio successfully brought back the ‘Italian Stallion’ image of his past to carry into future joy, celebrating his recent marriage and happy family life. Life changing milestone 1: Meeting Holly, 2011. I had been unhappy for the last 36 years of my life. Meeting Holly was like a breath of fresh air. She brought excitement, laughter and happiness to me. For the first time in my life I could picture settling down and starting a family of my own. Life changing milestone 2: The birth of my children, 2012 and 2013. I was at a point in my life where I was ready to settle down and have kids. The birth of my children was an amazing moment! I never pictured my life as a father but now I am responsible for these two precious babies I know I will love until the day I die. Life changing milestone 3: Bringing Sexy Back, 2014. When I met Holly I weighed 80kgs. After just two years I had gained 40kgs. Depressed, unmotivated and stuck in my own rut I knew life had to change if I wanted to be around to see my two beautiful children grow. My sister secretly entered me into the new TV series on Channel 7, Bringing Sexy Back. When I found out I had made it on the show I was nervous, scared, full of doubt but also extremely excited. I’m not the kind of person that likes to fail. Failing in front of an Australia-wide audience was not an option. There were summer holiday issue

times I thought I would give up but I reminded myself of the reasons I was doing it. One of them was marrying the girl of my dreams! Now weighing in at 85kgs and having a body fat percentage of 24 per cent (BFP at the start was 54 per cent) I am happy, healthy and full of life. Life changing milestone 4: Making up with my father, Bringing Sexy Back, 2014. When I was three-years-old my mother passed away in a car accident. My father was left to raise two young children on his own. At the age of 12 I left home thinking my father was never there for me. The tension between us never subsided until I got the chance to put it all behind me and make up with him when Channel 7 flew me to the Philippines during the show. Until that moment all the thoughts of my own past were stopping me from being the best father I could be to my own children. Life changing milestone 5: Marrying Holly, June 2014. The day after I revealed the new ‘healthy me’ to family, friends and Australia the day came I had waited for my whole life. I got to marry the woman I love. We tied the knot on Daydream Island in June 2014. Now we get to start a new healthy, active life together and with our two beautiful children. profilemagazine

"The difference you see in women especially ... it’s amazing.”

S

wapping the chilly coastal town of Brighton, UK for the sun-filled Noosa region wasn’t only a physical relocation, but a valuable career move for Natalie Draper. As the cosmetic injection nurse at the new Laser Clinics Australia clinic in Sunshine Plaza, Natalie credits her expatriation to Australia with providing opportunity to pursue her dream job. Now comfortably settled in Noosa, and after becoming swiftly integrated into the circle of her profession, Natalie is a familiar and popular face on the Noosa social scene. With her impeccable presentation and aptitude for her craft, she is an expert in the art of beauty. Natalie first explored Australia on an overseas sojourn in her early twenties, before returning home and completing four years of nursing studies, followed by a midwifery course before permanently returning to Australia with her three children five years ago. Upon settling in Noosa, Natalie, still a practising nurse, met a local GP who was seeking a practice nurse to train in the application of Botox. “Back in the UK it would have been a lot more difficult to get into cosmetic medicine, so here I was pretty lucky to find a GP who was already practising it,” says Natalie. The chance to move into a cosmetics role full time became available when a Laser Clinics Australia clinic opened in Sunshine Plaza in July 2014. “I’m the nurse injector so I am consulting with clients and administering treatments on the day, discussing available treatments for the future, and referring clients across to the skincare and laser hair removal as well,” Natalie shares of her coveted new role. To keep up with the ever-transient trends, Natalie regularly attends conferences, training seminars, lectures and workshops. “There are new things coming out every five minutes in injectables and cosmetics. The training through Laser Clinics Australia is excellent, and there are regular training sessions made available to us.” This continuous further education allows Natalie to perfect the art of her beauty technique. She elaborates, “There are different ways of injecting to make the face look more natural. The looks people want change as well.” Can she share any industry secrets? “The difference you see in women especially, is that even the smallest fix can make them seem like a million dollars. It doesn’t have to be a complete overhaul. It boosts their confidence, it’s amazing.”

ewind almost 30 years ago to when Vera Granshaw was a 16-year-old doing work experience at her local jewellery store. She would man the counter and sell all sorts of jewels, dreaming about one day designing her own sparkly things. “I was offered a full time job in the mid 1980s and stayed with the industry, I absolutely love it. Jewellery is my passion,” says Vera. Over the years, Vera says her job has become more exciting, going on to work with high end jewellery companies in Sydney and Brisbane. In 2000, the qualified jewellery designer and diamond grader moved to the Sunshine Coast and 18 months ago, joined the team at Underwoods Fine Jewellers as a jewellery designer. “My job is about chatting to customers and finding out what they like, what they don’t like,” says Vera. “What their style is in terms of fashion, do they like bling or are they conservative? Also, picking up on their personality that comes through in the conversation.” Vera has a penchant for bling and says she gets all excited when her clients request a flashy, elaborate piece of jewellery to design. But rings and pendants are the most common designs, often made for special occasions such as engagements. “You’re really part of their journey at that point in time, being engaged is a big step,” says Vera. “It’s a happy medium working with couples, I love their interaction together of talking about what they want and when they open that box and see the finished product, it’s that wow moment we’re looking for.” Having worked so closely with clients in creating personal pieces, Vera says it can get emotional. “Sometimes they have jewellery that is sentimental from previous generations or they want to design something new, they want to start that for their family,” she says. “I encompass all the ideas they have into the design. I then sketch, colour render and work out all the details and then a jeweller makes it.” Having worked in the industry for so long, Vera has gathered quite a hefty collection of jewellery, most in 1980s style. But she has redesigned and refined her collection over the years to better reflect her contemporary taste. “I’ve refined my range now and have a few key pieces that I love to wear all the time,” she says.

Popular among young families seeking a semi-rural lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan city, Montville offers a quaint little primary school and is within driving distance of Nambour and Maroochydore, making it the perfect choice for those seeking a tree change for their family. Montville is also a popular choice among retirees or those wanting to embrace a slower pace. Sprawling acreage properties are peppered through the lush rolling hills as are some residential areas boasting larger than average block sizes. Nature and fitness lovers are also well catered for with a seemingly endless array of places offering stunning vistas, walking tracks through rainforest and numerous outdoor activities to take part in, not to mention the stunning Kondalilla Falls circuit.

Coasting along the narrow winding road, past the cow-studded rolling hills towards the hinterland town of Montville, you can almost feel your blood pressure drop and your heart rate relax. There is just something about the quaint village that exudes a feeling of peace and tranquility. Perched on the Blackall Range, with stunning views over the Sunshine Coast and surrounding hinterland, the charming town is a hub of all things creative, oozing with art galleries, local wineries, specialised arts and crafts, busking musicians, tarot card readers and the like. Renowned as a romantic getaway, Montville is home to many luxurious tree houses, lakeside cabin resorts and boutique B&B houses. The village of Montville has a small population, however, take a drive down the road and you will find several more small villages and farms nearby offering more cafes, boutiques, accommodation and arts and crafts. Once purely a farming community, Montville began to change to more of a tourist destination during the early 1970s when it became popular among Brisbane day-trippers, which is just an hour and a half drive away. It is also high on the list of places to visit for our national and international visitors.

freshly brewed coffee in hand, beach bag thrown over my shoulder, flip flops comfortably on foot and a casual summer dress – the perfect attire for a day in one of the most loved Sunshine Coast towns, Caloundra. Bulcock Street is so versatile, it ticks all the boxes. But, this is only the start of my adventure at Caloundra – there are six beaches yet to explore, plenty of entertainment venues, fabulous tours, roller-skating and even skydiving to indulge in. As I want to take in as much salt air as possible, I travel to Pumicestone Passage, the start of a breath-taking coastal pathway, which stretches along some of the most scenic shorelines in Queensland. The path is a continuous coastal link from Golden Beach in the south, around Caloundra Headland and then Moffat Headland, before heading north following the long, sandy beaches of Kawana to Point Cartwright. It is the perfect way to waste a day, exploring the coves and rocks along the shoreline.

BUSINESS PROMOTION

AGEING GRACEFULLY

I

t doesn’t seem all that long ago, that anti-wrinkle creams, a proper skin care regime and regular facials were for “older” women – I had ages to think about all that! Fast forward a few years, three children later and a busy work schedule and all of a sudden, boom! I am well and truly there! Like most women about to hit the big 40, skin care (or lack thereof) is something that creeps up all of a sudden until one day you look in the mirror and realise the person staring back at you has taken a back seat to everyone else’s needs and it’s time for some intervention – fast! So on a rare “me” day I took myself off to the Professional Beauty Clinic in Noosaville after hearing about the much-lauded HydraFacial, a new, pain-free answer to Microdermabrasion that doesn’t leave your skin red and dry. Freshed faced and dressed for comfort in my gym gear on the day of my visit, I was pleased to see Professional Beauty Clinic rooms are tucked away in a discreet location so I was unlikely to run into the glamour set of Noosa! I was greeted by vivacious owner, Grace Kovac, a world-renowned aesthetician with more than 30 years experience. In fact, Grace has just returned from Las Vegas, where she undertook advanced training in the HydraFacial and is the only aesthetician on the Sunshine Coast offering the state-of-the-art treatment. After a quick assessment of my neglected skin and confirmation that it needed some love and attention, she got straight to work with her magic hydra pen! Best described as a pen with a suction nozzle, Grace ran the device over my face, concentrating on the T-zone, across my forehead, down the sides of my nose and chin. I can report it was not painful at all and can be best described as a tingling sensation as it cleans each and every pore … think of it as a steam clean for your face!

“Gone are the days when beauty therapists squeeze each pimple or blackhead,” says Grace. “This device literally sucks away all the impurities that have built up over time and even reduces the discolouration caused by sun damage ... and the beauty is you see results straight away.” I can vouch for that! I don’t think my skin has ever felt so smooth or clean after the treatment and as Grace pointed out afterwards as I looked in the mirror, my skin was a couple of shades lighter and the pigmentation caused by pregnancy and sun damage on my jawline was much less obvious. I was impressed! Perhaps what I loved best about this treatment was that I was in and out in 30 minutes. No fluffing around! “It’s great for brides or before a big night out,” says Grace. “There is no downtime and you won’t get any breakouts afterwards.” No wonder it’s a favourite among celebrities including Beyonce and Paris Hilton! Unlike previous traditional facials I have experienced, it was the first time I could visibly see a difference in my skin straight away. “Apart from the relaxation side of a facial, they are really a waste of time,” says Grace. “This is an actual treatment, where you will see real results.” I wasn’t the only one to notice either. On arrival at the office the next morning, two of my colleagues commented on my glowing skin. It is the the best thing you can do for your skin in 30 minutes that will leave you feeling 10 years younger. Hmmm, maybe if I treat myself to regular sessions, I could get away with being 39 for a few more years yet! Shhhh.

“PERHAPS WHAT I LOVED BEST ABOUT THIS TREATMENT WAS THAT I WAS IN AND OUT IN 30 MINUTES. NO FLUFFING AROUND!”

PEREGIAN BEACH HAS MAINTAINED ITS UNSPOILT SLICE OF BEACH-SIDE SUBURBIA WITH THE BLOSSOMING COMMUNITY BECOMING A MAJOR DRAWCARD FOR HOLIDAY-MAKERS SEARCHING FOR A LAID BACK COASTAL EXPERIENCE.

W

hether you’re wanting to get back to nature or chasing a quiet cuppa with friends or family, Peregian Beach always has something on offer. Peregian Beach was established in 1960 and since then, the seaside town has become a hive of activity with locals opening up bustling boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops. While Peregian is widely known for its beautiful beach, immerse yourself in nature and head towards the southern end of the beach and venture over the sand hills where you’ll discover Peregian Environmental Park – a haven for wallum vegetation and perfumed wildflowers that burst into colourful life. Golf enthusiasts are also in for a treat, with a state-of-the-art golf course not far from the town’s centre.

THINGS TO DO... TAKE A WALK

LAKE WEYBA NATIONAL PARK

If you’re up for good walk, it’s worth the picturesque trek along the five-kilometre stretch of beach that runs from the coastal fringe of the Noosa National Park to Stumers Creek, Coolum. For the wilderness route, take the dirt cut through the Noosa National Park Wetlands to Murdering Creek. If it’s views from above you’re after, head to Emu Mountain, which can be reached via a fairly easy rocky walking path from Havana Road at Peregian Beach. At Emu Mountain, you’ll experience spectacular views of the coast and mountains.

To the west of Peregian Beach, you’ll find Lake Weyba National Park and the lake itself. Not too far away is the southern expansion of the Noosa National Park which offers a bounty of coastal scrub and vegetation and an impressive rainforest which is home to a plethora of native flora and fauna.

PEREGIAN BEACH SURF CLUB For the best views in town, the local surf club without doubt always tops the list. Bistro @ the Surfie, located upstairs at the Peregian Beach Surf Club, provides a good selection of affordable meals for the family, with an expansive deck that overlooks the park and ocean.

The Peregian Beach Commu nity Association lobbied the State Government seeking amalgamation of south Peregian into the Noosa sh ire. Amalgamation with Noos a was made official in 2004.

A visit to Palmwoods would not be complete without dining at the nostalgic Rick’s Garage, a fabulous little diner with 1950s inspired memorabilia everywhere you look. It’s like stepping into a scene from Grease or Happy Days and they are renowned for serving up the BEST burgers on the Sunshine Coast. Well worth the drive!

N

ambour and Palmwoods are visited by thousands of people each year, often as the last pit stop before heading further west into the undulating fields of the lush Hinterland. On the surface, Nambour – an ol’ sawmill town appears to be the Sunshine Coast’s prodigal daughter. Stepping on to Queen Street is like walking in to a postcard of Melbourne. Businesses spill on to the street in colourful splendor as locals engage in their daily catch-ups, inviting customers through their eclectic doors. Before disappearing ‘up the mountain’ to the heart of the Coast’s arts and craft scene however, it is also well worth taking time out to explore Palmwoods – a unique gateway, a space oozing with history and village charm. Set at the eastern foothills of the Blackall Range, the area is a rural delight. Originally a fruit growing mecca, specialising in bananas and pineapples, it has grown into a foodie hub with a cool alternative vibe and a stash of passionate residents basking in the good life, forging a reputation as a haven for fresh organic produce.

QUOTA PARK It’s the park that offers something for the entire family. From the war memorial and themed garden to the interactive playground. Enchanting beauty surrounds you with venue facilities including a barbeque, various sheltered areas, shady trees, toilets and ample parking.

FIND INNER PEACE Five kilometres to the south of Palmwoods, the village of Eudlo is distinguished by a Buddhist monastic retreat, Chenrezig, which is free to visit, offering various teachings and classes and a fabulous little café.
