It’s a jungle out there in business land … as demonstrated at the recent Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Awards. Organisers pulled out all stops at their jungle-themed awards night which saw some of the Coast’s top businesses walk away with a swag of awards from a vast range of industries, including retail, innovation, manufacturing and business services. What impressed me most about the awards was the diverse nature of the winners; from gelato shops to plumbing companies. It goes to show that, no matter what your industry, you can stand out from the crowd, rise above your peers … and become king of the jungle. This got me thinking … not only are these awards a great way to position your business as the best in its field, but they are an exercise in ensuring your business is, in fact, running at its optimum. What better way to evaluate your business’s performance than by entering awards such as these? In fact, by going through the arduous task of addressing the awards criteria, you are adding to your business plan and perhaps uncovering areas of your business that could do with a little help. Win or lose, you’re a winner.
In my pre-publishing days, I spent a number of years in the tourism industry, and one of my most important annual tasks was to write the 40-plus page awards submission. Anyone who has tackled a similar submission knows it can be a time-consuming and somewhat daunting task. I remember the first year I had to put a submission together … there was a number of questions I simply did not have an answer to. However, by years two and three, not only had I implemented changes into the business to answer those tricky questions, we had improved the business in such a way that we won each and every awards program we entered for the next several years. Turn to page 26 to join with us to congratulate the winners and finalists from this year’s awards, and make sure you get your submission in next year for your chance to shine and grow. I know I will! This month, we feature a person who not only shines, she radiates. She has been crowned the most successful Australian female author … ever. We meet the gorgeous, determined and very talented Barbara Pease and are honoured to tell her inspiring story of how, together with husband Allan, she has forged a hugely successful career out of pure tenacity and hard work. Read Alli Grant’s personal interview to find out what makes this global success story tick and to pick up a few tips on how to achieve your best life. It goes to show that although winning awards and accolades is an amazing achievement and one that should be celebrated with gusto, winning really isn’t everything … the effort to win is. “No matter how hard the loss, defeat might serve as well as victory to shake the soul and let the glory out.” AL GORE, Former US Vice President

ll photography ben stone Okay, it is near impossible to jag a car park with the Christmas season upon us but can you park in the ‘Parents With Prams’ parks if you just have prams in the cars and no actual children? Our regular columnists from HOT91.1FM, Todd and Sami, battle it out in the carpark in this month’s instalment of He Says She Says. todd and sami

A
ll right, so sure I’ve done a few shonky things in my life that have pretty much guaranteed me a spot in the fiery pits of hell ... I smuggled a packet of grape Hubba Bubba out of Coles in my undies as a nine-year-old, I’ve nicked witches hats and street signs as a teenager and I’ve even ordered fancy umbrella laden drinks from a swim-up pool bar under someone else’s room number, but apparently these nasty deeds are angelic compared to my latest evil undertaking. I recently parked my clapped-out 2003 Fairmont at Sunshine Plaza in the ‘Parents with Prams’ car park. “What’s the problem with that?” I hear you ask. Nothing, I reckon. Am I a parent? Yes I am, of four bin lids thanks very much. Did I have a pram in the boot? Indeed I did, thank you for asking. Were my kiddies with me at the time? Err ... next question ... I recently shared this on our radio show and I was delivered an almighty smack down mostly from mums who were outraged at my casual attitude to what they see as a major misdemeanour. Let’s look at the facts. The sign says ‘Parents with Prams’ ... right? I’m a dad. I had a Babylove stroller in the boot, therefore I qualify. I know, it’s Christmas time and the shops are busier than a one legged man in a butt kicking contest ... According to the ladies who rang into our show, I should be ashamed of myself. What kind of man would desecrate the holy ground that belongs to the mums and bubbas of our world? Have I no shame at all? (If you’ve seen the piccy of me in my jocks on Facebook then you know the answer to that one.) Look, I’m not going to suggest we’re creating an outrageous social segregation here, dividing mums and dads with prams and kids against mums and dads with prams sans kiddies, but geez we’re not far off ... it’s a new division in society known as ‘carparktheid’. Nelson Mandella would be disgusted! I see the ‘Parents with Prams’ parks as a little reward for being a dad, a little pat on the back if you like, a bit of a “good on you mate ... You’ve got four littlies, your house smells like a pet shop, your car reeks of Vegemite and vomit, so please, have a little break on us, Champ!” However, having said all this, I’m going to selflessly give up my car park treat to the fully under appreciated mums as a Christmas pressy. But, if you’re at the Plaza and you happen to stroll past a silver Fairmont displaying a mohair rug on the back seat and a bowls cap on the back shelf and it’s parked in the ‘Seniors’ car space right near the entry to the shops, don’t automatically assume the owner is an old fella, he could very well be a 35-year-old father of four, further enhancing his chances of a fiery afterlife!

odd, you are going to be more unpopular with the local ladies than a lycra sale at a maternity party. Tiger Woods and Greg Norman let loose at a First Wives’ Convention would have more luck of finding female friends than you do at the moment. I mean, are you totally bonkers? You cannot park in those bays for ‘Parents with Prams’, unless your child is in the car with you at the time. It is a rule. It may not be written anywhere. It is set in stone, however. The same as that rule about not texting a guy after a first date until the next day. The same as not wearing black knickers under white linen pants. We all just know these rules and abide by them in order to live in a civilised society. I am taking a big, big deep breath and counting to 10 before I continue, because right now Toddy, I just want to tug on those gorgeous red facial whiskers of yours. Hard. You and in fact every other low life who has ever dared to steal a park from a parent with a baby in the back seat. Taking one of those parks when you do not have a crying / vomiting / screaming / hyperactive / wriggling child in the car is akin to committing the eighth sin. And it should be top of the list: forget gluttony and sloth. Dodgy car park theft is the dodgiest of dodgy acts. I mean, Winona Ryder has more credibility than you in the stealing stakes. You just do not do it. Full stop. I cringe whenever I see mums trying to heave heavy prams into their cars while they juggle grocery bags on their arms / children on their hips / heavy hand bags on their shoulders and food snacks in their fingers. It is cirque du soleil Motherhood. You are actually dealing with women here who are near going over the edge anyway thanks to having to deal with balancing busy lives, coping with family pressures and on top of that raising babies. Trying to look semi together when most of your clothes that actually fit you have baby vomit over them is not an easy task. Leaking boobs / cracked nipples / swollen ankles and sleep deprivation make mums potential weapons of mass destruction and you really would not want to be pushing this over-tired and under-appreciated species too far. Trust me. So just back off. Let parents with actual children in the car have what is rightfully theirs in the first place. So we have solved this dilemma: you can never ever again park in the ‘Parents with Prams’ park unless you have little human attachments with you. However, parking in the parcel pick up area, now that is totally fine and actually quite a handy little secret to have up your sleeve.

ll words alli grant
International authors, television presenters and global gurus of style, Trinny and Susannah are no strangers to Australian shores thanks to their deal with Westfield Shopping Centres. Alli Grant caught up with the dynamic duo on their latest Australian adventure and witnessed firsthand, how a little honesty, a splash of sincerity and a lot of love can transform lives … in just a 10-minute makeover.
S
tep one – a bra fitting. Admittedly, I hadn’t been ‘re-sized’ since the birth of my son (a no-no, I know), and my bras had been feeling a little, well, snug. There was no way in hell I was going to face up to the queens of cup size with my cups spilling over! $250 and four new bras later (and a rather embarrassing ‘up-sizing’ by, gulp, two, yes two cup sizes), my boobs were at least ready for the task at hand. And as for the rest of me? Let’s just say I tried on a few (hundred) combinations, consulting Trinny and Susannah’s latest literary offering The Body Shape Bible along the way. But am I an hourglass or am I a cello? I was a little confused, and truth be told I still don’t know, so I donned a maxi dress (a safe and comfortable option) and off I headed to Westfield Carindale, questions under one arm and breasts securely cradled in my brand new brassiere. If nothing else, I knew I wouldn’t be having a ‘why do you have four breasts?’ moment that Trinny and Susannah have become famous for. Phew! We were ushered into Westfield’s boardroom to meet these icons of style – with five magnificent minutes of one-on-one time ahead. As you would expect, both ladies were groomed to within an inch of their lives, and looked fabulous, with shoes to die for. Trinny has legs that go all the way to her earlobes, and Susannah is gloriously womanly with what Trinny describes as “great tits”. While Trinny snacked on crackers dipped in peanut butter straight from the jar (how I love her), I settled into my chair and began my speed questioning. I was determined to make the most of my five meager minutes. alli: What would your advice be for dressing for a coastal summer? trinny: I’ve noticed a lot of Australian women are obsessed with having a tan – they can’t face summer without one. Some women psychologically feel thinner with a tan, and I can understand that … But there are a lot of trends in this season that look better without a tan, like nude colours. alli: And what about swimwear? Once you hit 35 or a size 12, the options are limited – you can wear boardshorts and look like a teenage boy, or swimwear with a skirt and feel like an 85-year-old woman. susannah: The good thing is there’s a lot of swimwear options out there. There’s this great Miracle Suit we discovered in the UK which is perfect if you’re a size 14 to 16 as it really holds you in. trinny: But if you have big boobs you simply must have a built-in bra – it will make your shape look much better. All in ones have your tits hanging down too far. susannah: Swimsuits from the ‘50s are back in – lots of underwire. You just can’t wear them if you’re very skinny as you have to have curves. And boy shorts are really sexy too. alli: You’re both considered such icons of style. Who do you consider stylish? trinny: There are women I admire for how they dress, but the special ones have their own style. You don’t feel like there’s a stylist literally standing in their shadow. You know they have the brain to choose something that actually suits them. I love Cate Blanchett – she’s stunning and you know she dresses herself. You certainly know when a stylist has said ‘Here, wear this because it’s Ralph Lauren, blah, blah, blah’ … without even thinking about their shape. alli: But with so many stylists out there in celebrity land, are there as many fashion faux pas as there used to be? susannah: There are much less, which is the sadness, really. We love mistakes! There’s just no individuality anymore – the
10
profilemagazine
mystery is gone. I think the most stylish woman at the moment is that Christina [Hendricks] from Mad Men. She is just gorgeous. alli: I’m interested in your thoughts on sizing in fashion – so many of my friends comment that sizes are getting smaller. trinny: It can be really difficult. I’ve always been a small size, but I have never thought I have to get into a certain size. I dress for my shape and then work out what fits best. But women can be very negatively influenced by the importance of size. There are rules about how you buy sizes and styles. If you’re a curvy woman we would tell you to buy a jacket a size smaller and always wear it open. Sizing is probably a little less generous, especially with high-end designers. They just don’t want to make for bigger women. alli: What about Australian women? Have you found typical shapes as you have travelled the country? susannah: In Canberra we saw a lot of oblong, broad shouldered women. Very athletic. In Sydney we saw the top three shapes – column, cello and vase. There definitely aren’t so many flat chested women in Australia, or as many bigger tummies. alli: And what about our style? trinny: You’re definitely much more relaxed here, because of the climate and the culture. alli: Do you relax more when you arrive in Australia? susannah: Totally – we completely relax here. It’s hard work, but no one ever gets stressed, compared to London – it’s so competitive in London. Here, everyone is always happy. It’s fantastic! We are always happy to come back. After our brief chat with the ladies, we were ushered to our seats to view Trinny and Susannah in action at their last Australian show, and while I was impressed with their downto-earth approach to our interview, during their show I came to understand the amazing power these women hold in their hands, alongside their Hermès handbags. Incredibly energetic, always amusing, harshly honest (thankfully I wasn’t the victim of a ‘four breasted’ bra review) and at times wildly inappropriate, their live show wasn’t just an entertaining way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon; it was an insight into just how these women work their magic to transform the lives of everyday women from all over the world. A brutal yet well-meaning analytical review followed by a 10-minute style makeover from these two beautiful ladies didn’t just instantly transform the look of unsuspecting audience members; it touched their souls. I certainly wasn’t prepared for the tears (mine or the makeover participants’) or for the meaningful way these brief encounters would positively impact on these ‘transformed’ women, inside and out. Hats off to you both, ladies. What a wonderful gift to give the world – the gift of inner confidence … and a well-fitting bra.

Through the eyes of a child, the charity Maggie’s Dreamcatcher was born, and what a journey it has been. Cheryl Ryan, along with husband Michael and daughter Maggie, has embarked on a charitable expedition many of us would deem impossible, but for this family, ‘helping more than one’ has become a way of life. Lauren O’Connor met with Cheryl and found out exactly what it means to lend a helping hand. cheryl ryan
T
he Sunshine Coast is one of those places – when the sun is out, the sky is blue and the temperature is balmy, it’s easy to stop and consider for a moment just how lucky you are to be here. After talking with Cheryl Ryan, the term ‘lucky’ brought on a whole new perspective. Cheryl walked into the coffee shop where we were meeting and with her curly blonde hair and big blue eyes, she could pass for what some may consider to be a typical Australian woman. However, there is nothing typical about Cheryl Ryan. “My daughter, Maggie, saw an advert on television and she asked me why George didn’t have any clean water or food, and I didn’t know what she was meaning so I asked her to show me next time she saw the ad. I thought it must have been a cartoon, but it turned out to be a World Vision advertisement. So we talked about what the ad meant and how you could pick a boy or a girl from a country to sponsor. Her response was, ‘Why can’t we help more than one?’ That kind of became our catchphrase in the end.” It was this question that led the family down the path of creating a charity to build and support a much-needed health facility in Dharamsala in Northern India. Maggie’s Dreamcatcher Dharamsala Hospital Project Inc (MDDHPI). MDDHPI has been formed for the sole purpose of assisting with the formation of better health care in Dharamsala in India and to aid the supply of volunteer doctors and health workers. “Maggie was adamant she didn’t want to have to choose who she could sponsor as she didn’t think that was very fair. So I told my husband Michael about it and we got talking, and given Michael’s profession and my experience [Michael is a GP who, together with Cheryl, owns Medicine on Second, an award-winning medical practice on the Sunshine Coast] we decided to see what we could do within the health realm as it was an area we obviously knew very well.” Cheryl, Michael and Maggie travelled to India and set about establishing a medical clinic which is set to open in 2011. “We are pushing to have the project well and truly underway next year,” Cheryl explains. “Ultimately, we’d like to be finished and have the clinic up and running now, but with all the red tape you encounter in these kinds of things, next year will be our year.” Dharamsala is also home to the Gyuto Monastery, and further happens to home the residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. “The Dalai Lama has endorsed our project, which is wonderful. We were invited to Melbourne last year to meet with him and we had a private audience there, which was just amazing. “We chose India, not just because of my personal connection [Cheryl’s grandfather was born in India] but because it’s a safe destination to travel to and work in.
12
profilemagazine
Next year we hope to run a program that will take over a group of people as volunteers and get them to educate people about preventative health.” The project is aimed at assisting and improving already established medical clinics in the area and to also provide education and preventative medicine. Things we take for granted like a standard first aid kit would have a huge impact on the people of Dharamsala and as Cheryl commented, “ ... it’s fascinating the little things that make a big difference. “When we were last there, Michael and I went into a clinic and we were asked if we wanted to meet the resident doctor. Michael was thrilled and said, ‘Wow, you have a doctor here – how wonderful!’ We were introduced and Michael asked the fellow where he had done his training. He replied, ‘Oh no, I didn’t have any training, I use this,’ and he pulled out a medical text book – and that was what he was using for all of his work. We couldn’t believe it.” It brings a whole new meaning to the idea of getting a second opinion. This New Year’s Eve, Maggie’s Dreamcatcher Dharamsala Hospital Project Inc. is putting on a Bollywood Ball fundraiser event for their charity. “We had a Bollywood Ball a few years ago and everyone loved it so we thought we’d do it again. This year we’ve been able to get a Bollywood band up from Brisbane which will be exciting, and we thought New Year’s Eve would be a fun night to have it on. We’re hoping to attract around 150 guests. “I think one of the most fascinating things about getting involved in charity work is achieving things you never thought were possible. The people you meet along the way are people you would never get the chance to meet otherwise. The impact of seeing people who are less fortunate is incredible, and it makes you realise life is very generous to us here really. “The first trip I took to India, I can clearly remember I walked out of a restaurant and I saw a woman on the street with a dead baby in her arms. The impact of that moment will be something I’ll never be able to erase. I thought, it doesn’t matter what anyone is or isn’t doing, that just shouldn’t happen.” Amazingly, through the eyes of a youth in our community, the people of Dharamsala will soon reap the benefits of the charitable work accomplished through Maggie’s Dreamcatcher. It’s important to remember that our own backyards don’t just extend to the fence, but to the world.

G. J. GARDNER HOMES IS ONE OF THE LEADING BUILDING COMPANIES IN AUSTRALIA, WITH CEO DARREN WALLIS AT THE HELM. JESSICA JANE SAMMUT TALKS TO DARREN AND DISCOVERS A PERSONA AS SWEET AS CHOCOLATE, COMBINED WITH A COMMERCIAL STREAK OF HOT SPICE.
I
f someone were to write a book on Darren Wallis’s life and were looking for that all-important, bite-sized line to splash across the back cover, pinpointing the essence of his being and enticing any reader to open that book to uncover his fascinating story of success, one would be spoilt for choice. ‘The Australian dream come true’ could be one such line; or ‘the family man of business, power and wealth’; or even ‘the Sunshine Coast franchise genius’. Either way, as I approach the Mooloolaba coffee shop at which I am meeting Darren, with the sun beating down on me during one of summer’s finest days, I realise the beads of perspiration appearing on my brow are not only the result of the heat, but also a little to do with the anticipation I am feeling about meeting a man who appears to be the Sunshine Coast’s answer to Gordon Gekko (circa 1987 and without the dodgy trading). I couldn’t have been more wrong. As I sidle up to the table, I am greeted by a creamy latte and a smiling young gentleman with a warmth that puts me immediately at ease, and not a pinstripe suit to be seen. Let me introduce you to Darren Wallis. Darren, at age 38, is the CEO of one of the largest building companies in Australia, G.J. Gardner Homes, also the biggest franchise in Australia and New Zealand with more than 100 offices. After building 25,000 homes worldwide at a rate of approximately 2,000 homes a year, G.J. Gardner has a formidable reputation and is set to take America by storm. Born in Western Queensland to farming parents, Darren is the eldest of four children. Having moved to the Sunshine Coast in 1985, Darren studied for a commerce degree at the University of Queensland, working various jobs to put himself through (including a stint as a labourer on a banana farm) while his friends propped up the student bar. Darren’s strong work ethic and endless energy set him apart, and on graduating from higher education, this bright star was immediately offered a position as an assistant accountant for G.J. Gardner Homes in 1994. This was to be the start of a new and everlasting passion for Darren which led him to attain partnership after only one year and become CEO in 2000, his talent obvious for all to see. On talking to Darren, I see the glint in his eye of a successful entrepreneur but instead of the cut-throat, hard-nosed, time-precious executive I was expecting, he tells me about his past, his love for his family (wife and four sons), the values he cherishes in life such as integrity and honesty, his escape technique in the form of boat fishing, and he gives credit to his faith in God.
But just as I am feeling all warm and fuzzy, he juxtaposes this calm and relaxed exterior with a mention of his quest for world domination – pushing G.J. Gardner as far as it will go with a view to being the number one builder in the world by 2025. A little lightning bolt among the rainbows … there’s that glint in action. I want to get to know this man better – partly for professional reasons (I am devoted to my readership, of course), but also partly to satisfy my own curiosity, as so far Darren has almost seemed too ‘lovely’ to be a CEO, except from that flash of lightning I saw a moment ago. So, I ask Darren to tell me something his friends would be surprised to know. Darren grins and sits back in his chair for a moment and ponders my question. After a few seconds’ consideration he offers me two revelations. As he divulges them, I note how diversely opposite each ‘secret’ is and things start becoming clearer. I realise that, much like our conversation earlier, part of Darren’s appeal and perhaps success, is that he is a walking, talking contradiction of the hard and the soft. An absolutely killer combination. “Did you know I am the founder of Smith & Sons – the renovation and extension business?,” he offers for his first revelation. I did not, and I have to say I was impressed. Whereas many would be clambering over themselves to shout this from the rooftops, Darren merely mentions this successful national franchise business (of which I have had excellent personal experience) calmly and casually, as if it was a little hobby. “Did you also know that I got to Grade Seven on the piano?” That was not what I was expecting to hear. It turns out Darren used to tutor music while at university, and was offered a position as a full-time music teacher in a local school at the same time as he was offered his position at G.J. Gardner. Amazing, I thought. How different his life could have been if he had taken that path. Sliding doors. And as we break our meeting to allow Darren to get on with his day of high-end strategies, financial planning and business progression meetings (my words, not his), I think about how much I have enjoyed being in the company of this man, especially after my initial nervousness. It is then I realise the paradox about Darren I admire the most – his status as Goliath, but his persona as David. That, and his great taste in coffee.

ll sponsored by boq maroochydore and genesys wealth advisers There was a time where manners were paramount and respecting your elders was the norm not the exception. In 2010, have good manners and common courtesy been replaced by abbreviated text messaging and a lackadaisical approach to watching our P’s and Q’s? Alli Grant was relieved to learn that good manners are not dead … they have just been on holiday for a while, as she discovered in this month’s Ladies at Lunch.
M
y little family recently took a trip to Bali, one of our favourite holiday destinations. Sadly, it’s not a simple case of ‘land, disembark and leisurely stroll through customs’ when visiting Bali – a plethora of transportation is required. Upon disembarking the plane, you’re generally ushered onto a hot, stinky and completely overcrowded bus that takes you to the airport building. Used to the routine, on I hopped. Backpack in place, 19-month-old Hudson perched on my hip and handbag dangling from my shoulder. As usual, it was standing room only. I wasn’t worried. Surely someone would offer me their seat. Surely someone would see how difficult it is to stand on a moving bus while juggling two bags and an oversized baby. Alas no, most seated passengers immediately found something interesting to look at on the tarmac. Not even my evil glares worked – teenage boys were especially immune to my deathly stares. Finally, a 50-something man did stand and offer his seat, but not before I had tears welling in my eyes for fear that both Hudson and I would end in a pile on the floor in about 30 seconds flat … and you can’t blame a cultural divide – this was a busload of Australians! It got me thinking … where have our manners gone? When I was a little girl I was taught to respect my elders. I would have most definitely offered up my seat to a clearly stressed and overloaded mother on a bus, perhaps a little begrudgingly on the inside, but I would have done it just the same. Because that’s good manners … it’s how I was brought up. As a society, we are not as giving, generous, kind or courteous as we were 10 years ago, especially when it comes to ‘young people’. Yes, okay, I sound like an 82-year-old berating the ‘young people of today’, but I’m not alone in my thinking, as I was to discover at this month’s instalment of Ladies at Lunch. Where have our manners gone? Did we kiss them goodbye in the ‘80s along with spiral perms, speed roller skating and hoola hoops? It’s a sad day when it’s a big deal to receive a please or a thank you … or a busload of Australian tourists won’t stand up to offer a seat to a lady struggling with a baby. Perhaps we need to take Tom Cruise’s advice (as given to journalist Peter Overton in that famous 60 Minutes interview) and “put our manners back in”? Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m super sensitive when it comes to common courtesy. Maybe times are a-changing and I need to get with the program and lower my expectations? But I’m afraid, with a 19-month-old son under my tutelage, my days are full of ‘say please’ or ‘thank you Hudson’ … I can’t imagine bringing up a child who doesn’t appreciate the difference between ‘what’ and ‘pardon’. Call me old fashioned … Joining me at Hathi Indian Restaurant on my crusade to make the world a more polite place was Sandra Wills, our co-host for this month from Genesys

Wealth Advisers. Sandra is a divine lady with impeccable manners and two beautifully bred sons in their early 20s – I knew she’d be on my side! Sandra brought two guests to lunch this month – Heather Pithers and Tracey Ferguson. Heather, branch owner / manager of BOQ Maleny, has been on the Coast for nine years. She has two teenage children. Tracey owns a financial planning business, AXA Financial Planning, and has two children – aged 10 and 13. Profile recently welcomed Jessica Jane Sammut to our little family as both writer and sub editor, and this month we also welcomed her to lunch. Jess hails from the UK (where good manners are not an option). She recently relocated to Noosa with her husband and two-year-old son who is already completely au fait with the world of pleases and thank yous. Lisa Harrison from Pomo Creative also enjoyed an escape from the office for an Indian feast. Originally from Brisbane, Lisa relocated to the Coast two years ago – the perfect place to bring up her kids, aged seven and five. profile: I am of the belief that as a society, our manners are definitely slipping … are we all in agreement? heather: I think it depends on the age group. tracey: It’s definitely a bug bear for me when it comes to younger people. The emphasis just seems to be on other things. I’m so big on things like acknowledging if someone addresses you. On the whole, I think they are [slipping]. lisa: Working in social media, I can see why kids are like that. They just don’t have a face any more – they can push the boundaries online. jessica: The online world is supposed to open up communication, but I think kids have lost these skills – they don’t talk on the phone or have face-to-face conversations so much any more, which is so important. profile: Why the change? We can’t just blame technology, surely? sandra: I definitely blame television – well, a certain segment of television. A lot of TV programs reward bad behavior. But manners and respect all come from the home. tracey: It’s absolutely about parenting. So many parents are just so busy, so tired. A much greater percentage of parents just aren’t home as much. jessica: Today both parents generally work, so it’s harder. It’s this subculture of no time and no energy … and hey, it doesn’t matter anyway. But it does. heather: There’s a lot to be said for good parenting. If I receive a text from my children they won’t ever abbreviate, mostly because I can’t understand what they are saying, but because I set clear boundaries. It definitely comes back to the home. jessica: I’m massive on manners. We have a rule – my son must say his pleases and thank yous, even at two. He knows the difference already. I’ve deliberately not
had any more children yet as I want to be able to have the time to raise Zac properly – I know my limits in regard to my time. lisa: Like Jess, I think it’s all about repetition and practice. And you have to lead by example – do it yourself. We don’t even have a TV in the lounge room – we have a media room and one in the kitchen, but not in the lounge. This morning the kids were all ready for school early so we sat down and talked. I think the problem with TV is the time it takes up, more so than what’s on it. profile: We are talking a lot about the younger generation – are we generalising? Are all kids like this? heather: No. Our kids still show courtesy to each other and their friends – we would hear about it from other parents if they didn’t. profile: What about teachers – what responsibility should they take when it comes to teaching our children good manners? I think the pressure placed on teachers is unwarranted and unfair, personally. tracey: I expect them to pull-up their bad manners – definitely. sandra: School is very important, but the emphasis shouldn’t be put on the teachers. The entire school has to uphold the same standards as you. jessica: I think discipline is very important – they need to be reprimanded for doing the wrong thing, in front of the other kids. profile: What are the basics when it comes to ‘good manners’? sandra: Definitely eye contact. tracey: It’s so important for kids to look at the person who is addressing them. And of course, pleases and thank yous. They should be taught to answer questions properly, not just with a grunt! They should definitely engage through eye contact. lisa: I think empathy is important. They can only learn that through living it. heather: I treat my children the way I want them to treat me. Some say I’m a strict mum but I’m okay with that. sandra: I think time at the dinner table is so important – the setting and clearing away, offering food before you take it yourself, conversation … and wearing a t-shirt at the table. No one comes to my dinner table without clothes on! profile: And what about discipline and the role it plays? sandra: You have to discipline from love. tracey: I certainly don’t mind being the disciplinarian. jessica: I think it’s definitely easier to be a bad parent and harder to be a good parent – it’s much easier just to give them what they want.

Part of the problem is that I don’t think children really know how to address adults. They are often confused.
“
profile: Has your approach to good manners come from your parents? jessica: As kids we were always taught the importance of manners and respect. My dad was a total disciplinarian. Looking back then I didn’t understand why particularly, I just accepted it, but I understand now and am grateful. Even the dogs would stand back to let Dad walk through a doorway first. sandra: Teaching children manners definitely gives them confidence, I think. tracey: It’s also about how they present themselves to the world. My dad taught us not to slouch – now I definitely walk straight and tall. I tell my kids ‘up you go’ if their posture isn’t great and they’re slouching. sandra: At the end of the day it’s all about how you present yourself.
left to right: heather pithers, jessica jane sammut, sandra wills, lisa harrison, alli grant and tracey ferguson
profile: I was taught to call my friends’ parents Mr and Mrs … is this important today? sandra: They were strict about it at my boys’ school – their friends all called me Mrs. heather: I think we are more relaxed in Australia – I don’t think it’s as common. sandra: Part of the problem is that I don’t think children really know how to address adults. They are often confused.
profile: When it comes to bad manners, what are your pet hates? heather: Chewing with your mouth open! It’s just basic manners. jessica: My pet hate is when you’re in a shop at the cash register and the phone rings and the cashier answers it and they ask you to hang on. I’m standing there trying to give them business. I also hate the use of mobile phones when at social functions – especially at lunch / dinner. Phones should be off the table and your company should have your undivided attention. sandra: Eye contact is a big thing with me. And please and thank you. Definitely saying ‘I beg your pardon?’ instead of ‘what?’. Oh and I hate the scratching. (profile: We quickly realise Sandra is talking about male scratching in the crutch location in what she describes as the ‘tuck and adjust’.) tracey: I’m big on telephone etiquette. I know I keep coming back to young people, and I don’t mean to, but I can’t stand it when one of my son’s friends calls and just says ‘Is Jack there?’. I teach my kids to introduce themselves first. lisa: I hate people walking in front of me – invading my personal space. From a business perspective, I had a woman turn up to a meeting in a tracksuit – that left me feeling like she wasn’t respecting me in the meeting.
profile: [I tell the ladies my Bali bus story …] Why do you think so few people considered standing to offer me a seat, especially the teenage boys? sandra: Honestly, it was probably beyond their consciousness – they probably didn’t even realise there was a lady there holding a baby. That said, I would have been incredibly disappointed if my boys hadn’t stood up for you. jessica: I think teenagers are in a world of their own most of the time – it probably wasn’t deliberate.
profile: So it all comes back to basics? jessica: I think it’s cyclic. We were all brought up with such good manners, and now Generation Y has the attitude of ‘the world owes me’ … but I think the appreciation for old fashioned values is returning and the next generation will come back to good manners – to what it was. sandra: I agree – it’s coming back to old fashioned values. Even the corporate world is following this pattern. We are coming back to a more personal level.
profile: And what about the business world? I think we are definitely a little more lax in the manners and business etiquette department than we were 10 years ago. tracey: Maybe it’s just what we accept – business etiquette today is different to what used to be acceptable. Like email – one line is now acceptable. jessica: Email definitely facilitates business – I’m always asking people to ‘just put it in an email’. I think it’s more intrusive to phone. You can email in your own time and people can read it and respond when convenient to them. lisa: Being polite online is definitely different to being polite in a face-to-face environment.
In a world where technology rules and abbreviated texts are the norm, I am a little afraid our standards are slipping on the manners front. What used to be completely inacceptable is quickly becoming the norm … so are we destined to become a society full of grunters who say ‘what?’ instead of ‘I beg your pardon’? Thankfully, with our lunching ladies leading the charge, I think the future is in perfectly mannered hands. I truly believe we are in the midst of a manners revolution. It’s definitely back to basics for me and my little boy – if I can churn out a son who respects the people around him, shows some common courtesy and watches his Ps and Qs, at the end of the day I can rest easy knowing I have done my duty as a mother. Oh, and thank you so very much for reading this story …

Hathi Indian Restaurant Alexandra Headlands I simply adore Indian food … but I do find it a challenge to find really good Indian fare. And up until recently I would have rarely considered indulging in an Indian feast for lunch. Boy how I have changed my tune thanks to our recent lunch at Hathi Indian Restaurant. Hathi in Alex is one of those rare, little, hidden gems. Unpretentious from the outside, Hathi offered up the best Indian I have had in a long time. And best of all, it’s located on the Esplanade in Alex, overlooking the ocean, perfect for a lunchtime treat. Our hosts, Sharon and Chris, prepared a feast, with all their favourite dishes. Chris explained that they like to add a bit of a twist to their menu. Who can go past a good naan bread? Not I! We started with a selection of garlic, cheese and spinach, and spicy naan bread, washed down with a glass of crisp, cool riesling. We were offered entrees of vegetables and home-made cottage cheese in a marinade of yoghurt and chickpeas with mint chutney, or salmon, yoghurt and aromatic herbs with a sour cream raita. And that twist? A pineapple sorbet in between courses to cleanse the palette. With lamb Rogan Josh and Ceylon fish curry on offer for mains, we happily hoed into our Indian feast, enjoying our personal raitas and washing it all down with a glass of sav blanc. And then there was dessert. While the wattalappam (baked palm sugar and coconut custard) looked fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed my coconut kulfi – an Indian take on coconut ice cream. Hathi is open for lunch from 11am from Thursday to Sunday, and for dinner seven days from 5pm, with dine in and take away menu options. The licensed restaurant recently won The Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Award for the restaurant / food service category (large business category). MINI Here we are in December – the sun is out, the holidays have started and Christmas is in view. this month, we have invited a well-known local to take a spin in a luxury mini from Coastline mini garage and here are the results. As in previous issues, the identity of our mystery car reviewer will remain a secret … until next month, when we will reveal their identity. Who could it be? Last month’s mystery driver was monique grabbe, formerly of faye rolph models. Congratulations to Sharon Thomas from Chevallum for guessing correctly, and winning a lifestyle prize pack from Coastline bmw.
MY TEST DRIVE EXPERIENCE I’m driving the fun and fabulous MINI Cooper Cabrio – with the soft-top down of course! It’s certainly a lot more spacious and plush compared to the MINI my husband owned back in the 1970’s, while still retaining that uniquely stylish MINI character … but with all the bells and whistles, this is a fun car to drive! I have always wanted to drive a MINI Cooper and so when I was handed the keys to this little red beast I was really excited. Remembering my husband’s old MINI, I was pleasantly surprised at how roomy it was and once I hit the road it just got better and better. Cruising down Nicklin Way, wind in my hair, music blaring, I was really conscious of the silly grin that I couldn’t get off my face. I really loved the car’s sporty look with the white stripes; this baby was great fun
to drive. With simple buttons to press to put the roof up or down it was very easy to operate and also quick. We all know MINIs are a compact car, but I found with the roof on or off it didn’t feel cramped. Cruising around the Coast was very easy and I quickly started to feel quite attached. I may even have to re-think my wish list for Christmas … come on Santa, I have been a really good girl this year. It didn’t take long to feel the need for speed in the MINI and to feel its power. With six gears it really offered many options and I found I was able to whiz here and there with ease. Parking it was simple and completing three-point-turns, a cinch. Did I mention the wonderful rear-view mirror? Oh and let’s not forget the button you press to start the car … loved that. I could just see a surf board sticking out of the back seat, and the laughter of the young-at-heart enjoying this zippy convertible. Overall, I had a fun time with my little red car. Yes “my car”, oh dear, was I really going to have to give this baby back? With the great weather we have here on the Coast, this is truly the perfect small car. I felt quite sad when I had to hand the keys over, so my final word is yes please, can I have one put under my tree and yes, red would be good.

WHY I LOVE IT I don’t know much about cars and even less about what is under the bonnet, but I did like what I saw in this car. If you are in the market for a compact, fun and fabulous car that is easy to get around in then look no further. I loved the style of the car and how BMW (BMW make MINI now) had made it so simple to put the top up or down. What girl wouldn’t love a MINI Cooper Cabrio? It’s made for fun and easy riding. What I think I loved the most was the price! A quality car that is very affordable. Mystery driver

Authors Barbara and Allan Pease are two of the world’s foremost experts on relationships and communication … but did you know they have lived in peaceful Buderim for 10 years? And did you also know that Barbara is considered Australia’s most successful female author … ever? Not to mention the fact that Barb became a mum in her 40s, not once but twice, defying the odds and proving the naysayers wrong, yet again. This month, Alli Grant chats with Barbara about her incredible journey and discovers how this country girl from Maryborough became a global celebrity, acclaimed author, devoted wife, mum, step mum and grandmother.
While I was pregnant and people used to ask how many kids we had, Allan would say we had four on the ground, one in the oven and one in the freezer.“

M
y husband, Simon, never listens to me. Actually, I think he listened to me once back in 2005, but it was an accident. Simon hears me, yes, but 99.9 percent of the time he doesn’t seem to take in the words. Sometimes I feel like I’m speaking Swahili! I have come to understand that it’s a bloke thing. And while I’m on the subject of things Simon isn’t very good at, you can add cooking and putting his dirty clothes in the laundry basket to the list. Not that I’m without flaws – far from it. I know it will surprise you all to learn this, but I have a list of imperfections myself. I have a shocking habit of leaving lights on and cupboard doors open – it drives Simon to distraction. And then there’s the anal rule that no one is allowed to come over if the house is a mess (post baby I have had to relax this rule a little), and, okay, I have an obsession with buying shoes … many would say these are very female characteristics. I am woman, hear me roar! Is it any wonder we bicker occasionally? Simon and I are very, very different creatures; he’s a man and I am a woman … he may as well be an aardvark and me an alpaca for all our similarities, or lack thereof. Don’t get me wrong – we have a wonderful marriage. It’s just that sometimes we don’t ‘get’ each other. And I know Simon and I are not alone in our differences or our challenges. The topic of relationships (and how to fix / improve / better understand them) is big business – just ask television’s Dr Phil or John Gray, author of global mega-seller Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. We all want to better understand our partner. None of us actually want to fight – we want to make love, not war! But these ingrained differences keep rearing their ugly little heads and causing unnecessary and frankly exhausting battles. One couple doing their part to ease the frustrations for couples all over the world is Barbara and Allan Pease. And if their names sound familiar … they should. Allan Pease became famous the world over as ‘Mr Body Language’ back in the 1980s, quickly becoming a sought-after public speaker and bestselling author. Today, Allan is one of the world’s foremost experts on body language and relationships, thanks to a little guidance and a lot of hard work from his wife, Barbara, who incidentally is Australia’s most successful female author – ever. Together, Barb and Allan have created a series of books (and supporting tools) on relationships, with Why Men Don’t Listen and Women Can’t Read Maps and Why Men Don’t Have a Clue and Women Always Need More Shoes translated into some 51 languages in more than 100 countries. The duo has clocked up nine number one
bestseller places, has produced 15 bestsellers and had documentaries made on their work. Barb and Allan are the country’s, and perhaps the world’s, greatest experts on relationships, and, believe it or not, they live in Buderim on the Sunshine Coast and have done so for 10 years. The Peases are yet another string to the Sunshine Coast’s global export bow, but bestselling author is just one of Barb’s many achievements as I was to discover upon meeting the blonde bombshell, who, at 48, is stunning and bursting with energy. I met Barb at the couple’s unbelievable home in the hills of Buderim, with panoramic views to die for and all the trimmings … a much deserved reward for many years of hard work and hardship, as I was to uncover. Upon entering their home, Barb immediately confesses that the house reflects both her and Allan’s tastes … eclectic. “We are completely eclectic, and we love it,” she enthuses, showing me around. We start where every good story should, at the beginning. Barbara Pease was the third of four girls born into a working class family in Maryborough. “My parents were really very poor. We lived in housing commission homes most of the time, but they gave me a strong work ethic. I watched them work so hard – it must have been such a struggle. From the age of 12 I worked three jobs. I learnt that if I wanted anything in life I would have to work hard for it.” Not a natural student, Barb cruised through school, until year nine, when her maths teacher asked her if she was as dumb as she acted. “This triggered something in me … I knew I had to show him. I went from an average student to getting 99.9 percent in maths. Soon, in all subjects I was in the top five percent in the state. It just took someone to challenge me,” she explains. After school, Barb moved to Rockhampton to study accountancy at uni, but after 12 months she decided there had to be more to life and so moved to Townsville to live with her sister and find a job. It was in Townsville that Barb settled in to what would become a familiar career pattern – get a job at ground level, learn everyone else’s job, fill in for them while they were on holidays and move her way up the food chain – but her youth would work against her. She started working in admin for a Townsville hotel and by 19 was assisting the accountant. However, Barb was soon approached to join a small regional newspaper which recognised her potential and within no time, she was a manager with the business, taking

on a new features department and making Rupert Murdoch a cool $1million in her first year in the role. It was at this time that Barb met and married her first husband and her son, Adam, came along. But the marriage was to last only six years. Realising she had to move on, Barb started a modelling and deportment agency, having modelled since she was young. She also relished the government work she did with long-term unemployed and spent a lot of time working on training and educational programs. “Someone told me this guy called Allan Pease was coming to town [Mr Body Language] and that I should teach his material. I loved his work – I bought the first ticket in town. I don’t think I’d ever laughed so much in my life … he was so funny! “After his presentation I started to interrogate him. I have always had this ability to look at something simple and expand it – make it more successful. He asked me to take a closer look at his business and our friendship grew from there.” “One day he suggested I move to Sydney to work with him in his business. “So off I went. After three days I had to tell him I couldn’t work with him. He didn’t have any systems or procedures in place. He was so reactive – I’m such a proactive person, I can’t just sit and wait. Next thing I know he’s offering me his business to run, and I thought yeah, that will work. I did wonder what would have happened if I failed, but I somehow knew I wouldn’t. I had the drive.” After about six months, Allan declared his love for Barb and the couple has been inseparable ever since, give or take a few world tours. As CEO of the wildly successful Pease International Pty Ltd, Barb obviously has a natural head for business. Soon after taking on Allan’s business, she realised it was time for a “refresh and a rebrand”. “He had been doing Body Language for 15 years – it was my job to recreate Allan and to give him and his business a new lease of life.” What Barb didn’t realise was that it would be the couple’s relationship and marriage (they married in 1991) that would be the catalyst for their next business idea. At the time, Barb thought they would head in a more sales-focused direction, but fate was to intervene. While driving around the UK, Barb and Allan locked heads – Barb wasn’t especially good at reading a map or giving directions and it frustrated Allan. “We were driving each other nuts – it was crunch time. We had to work out how to move forward. Allan couldn’t understand how I could run a multi-million dollar company but not be able to read a
map, and I was accusing him of never listening. So we wrote down a list of all the things that annoyed us about each other. “This was the start of our book – we did this to make our relationship stronger as we are both really fiery people. We started talking to our friends and we realised we were facing the same challenges as they were, so we did some research. I realised we had hit on something big – really big. “It was so liberating to realise that it is okay that I can’t read a map. What we should do is understand what we are good at and outsource the rest.” This first book took nine years to research, write and hit the shelves. “It was our first joint book – a lot of heart and soul went into that book as we really did write it together. Allan is so scientific in how he works, but I am more about what it all means and how I can make it work for other people.” So what is at the core of their relationship series? “You can either learn to understand the differences or you can fight. So many people want to fight and win, but if you have a winner you are really both the losers as your relationship will start to die. “We give you the tools to make your own solutions. If your partner is really messy around the house, tell him how it makes you feel – don’t point the finger at him. If Allan leaves anything lying around, I don’t mind picking it up, but I refuse to put it away, so I put it in his office. When he’s sick of the mess he tidies it up. No more fighting! It’s a solution that works for both of us.” Barb goes on to explain that, while Allan is still in high demand as a public speaker on the topic of body language (the pair recently released The Definitive Book of Body Language), large corporations also invite him to speak on relationships relevant to the workplace. Ultimately, Barb says the duo “works to make people more successful. We teach them how to sell and how to better communicate.” But as with so many successful people, they have had their fair share of ups and downs. “We had this accountant [in Sydney] who completely wiped us out … we were $2million in debt. We decided to move to England to recover – we thought Allan was overexposed here so that it would help to move to greener pastures. We went to England with ₤2000, our computers and our stationery, with nowhere to live. “Allan and I have both come from tough backgrounds; we have both lived in housing commission houses. We just looked at it like we were going back to where we came from. We just needed to dust ourselves off. We are such a powerful team; we knew we would

move forward.” Barb decided that British couples had the same challenges as Australian couples … surely relationship dramas were universal? It was time to find a publisher and distributer in England for their first book, Why Men Don’t Listen and Women Can’t Read Maps, which had been successfully selling back in Australia for a year. “I sent out our book to the big companies and gave them the first right to refuse … and boy did they refuse! I just don’t give up, so I decided to give myself a month to learn how to self-publish in England, and I started sending out books to the media. “We did it all ourselves – we were packing at night, shipping the books and doing the invoices, then doing media interviews to promote the book.” Impressed with the enormous amount of publicity Barb had generated, publishers were soon falling over each other to buy the Pease’s book, but it took one publisher more than 12 months to prove his worth – although self published, they still work closely with Orion. “Why Men Don’t Listen went so well here and in the UK. We did a tour of Japan – they had presold 50,000 copies and by the time we got there they had sold 250,000 copies. We are also massive in Germany – we were number one for three years … our second book was the only one to knock Why Men Don’t Listen off from number one. So far, it has sold over 13 million copies. “It’s a universal problem – the differences between men and women are just so vast. It really makes my heart sing knowing how we have impacted people.” While the Peases had paid off their debts and were enjoying newfound global literary success, the couple was about to have the wind well and truly taken out of their sails. In 2000, Allan was diagnosed with prostate cancer. “He was only 47 and it was aggressive. We saw a doctor who told us Allan wouldn’t last five years. We had faced and overcome our business challenges and now had been handed a death sentence. “We became research junkies to work out how Allan could survive and I did everything Allan did. We sat on mountains and meditated, we drank natural medicines … we tried all types of healing. “But the cancer was spreading and so Allan had surgery and underwent radiation. We knew we had to move somewhere healthy – which is why we moved to Buderim.” Barb goes on to explain that, while Allan had three grown children and she had one, she always wanted more, but up until this point it “hadn’t been too high on Allan’s priority list”. “We had achieved so many amazing things together – we had this great life, fabulous children … but we realised that if Allan died there wouldn’t be any ‘us’ … “This death sentence made Allan think differently. One day he told me he wanted children together. I was ecstatic!” The move to the Sunshine Coast marked a new phase in the Pease’s life – it was time to defy the odds and make a baby. Barb and Allan’s journey to parenthood was littered with hurdles. The couple faced challenge after challenge, set back after set back – eventually hiring two IVF specialists, one locally and one in Sydney. Finally, there was light at the end of the fertility tunnel – just! While Allan was in Fiji working at a convention with global megastar Anthony Robbins, Barb was being impregnated in Sydney. “I went back to the Sunshine Coast and I just knew I was pregnant … but that was just the beginning of a new set of worries – I could have had an empty sack or my baby could have had Down Syndrome because of my age.” Allan and Barbara were given terrifying odds – they were told their baby had a one in nine chance of being born with Down Syndrome. “Statistically, I was on the wrong end of the scale. I just couldn’t enjoy the pregnancy – there were just too many hurdles to jump.” Further tests completed, the odds worsened to one in five. Their doctor advised them to undergo amniocentesis. “I just didn’t care if my baby had Down Syndrome. I had waited 20 years for this ... It was the toughest thing I have ever had to go through – all those emotions and hormones.” They agreed to the amnio and with Barb and Allan’s tiny, little baby boy on the screen, Barb heard the words she had been longing to hear. “Barb, he’s perfect!” Finally, they could relax.
december 10
Soon after, Barb received a call from the couple’s IVF clinic. “They told me they had good news and bad news, so I asked for the bad news first,” she recalls. “They told me one of the babies [embryos] they had created was scrambled and wouldn’t live. But then they told me that I also had a perfect little daughter. I couldn’t believe I had a girl – I’d always longed for a daughter. I told them to put her into the freezer for later! “While I was pregnant and people used to ask how many kids we had, Allan would say we had four on the ground, one in the oven and one in the freezer,” Barb recalls with a smile. Barb and Allan’s first born was Brandon, who will be six in March. At the age of 42, Barb underwent a 13 hour, drug-free labour … only to discover that Brandon was in the posterior position. Ouch! “We picked a really strong midwife who we knew was against drugs. It was such a hard labour … but I finally pushed him out. No one could believe that a 42 and a half year old woman had just pushed out a baby after a 13 hour labour with no drugs… posterior!” If Brandon was a miracle, Bella is a miracle squared; she followed some three years later. “All the specialists said I couldn’t and shouldn’t do it [have Brandon] at 42. But I didn’t care about the statistics – you can give me all the statistics in the world, but they aren’t my statistics. I won’t take them on.” Not only did Barb battle through drug-free labours with both children, she had one hell of a time breastfeeding – her nipples were “almost completely broken off” with Brandon. But, in true Barb style, she was too determined to give up. As a matter of fact, Bella, who is almost three, is still enjoying breastfeeds from her loving mother. The Pease family is now complete. Ironically, Barb went through both of her pregnancies with step-daughters Melissa (37) and Jasmine (28) pregnant at the same time … both times. “We have six children and six grandchildren. There are definite plus sides to being an older mum, but there are also downsides to having children and grandchildren at the same time. Most people our age are empty nesters but we are living it all – changing the nappies and going through all that our children are going through. And Bella and Brandon have six nephews around them who are the same age. It’s amazing.” While Barb has cut back on the workload, she is still very much the active CEO of Pease International Pty Ltd. I ask her if she misses her old life. “I don’t really. I travelled the world and got to stay in the best hotels and meet the most amazing people in over 50 countries. But I had this ache in my heart that I could never fill. Now I feel healed and fulfilled. “But I still run the business – I start my days between 3:30am and 4:00am so I get lots of work done before the kids get up. We have a great team in place too. We are seen as such a huge corporation because we have arms and legs that reach all over the world. I am slowly increasing my input in the business again, and I love doing the deals. But what I love most is being a mum.” While Allan is the family celebrity in Australia, it is Barb who enjoys the highest profile overseas. “In Europe, I’m much bigger than Allan. He tells me I’m his handbag in Australia and he’s mine in Europe. He’s the larrikin. I’m the problem solver – I’m more focused on what I can give you and how I can make you a better person. I don’t tell the jokes – that’s Allan’s job!” She ponders their relationship for a moment and adds, “I just know that whatever life throws at us, whatever life can take away – we will always be an unstoppable team. Nothing else matters.” It goes to show what is important in life. While Barb is one of the world’s most successful female authors and a celebrity in her own right, happiness for this local is watching her three-year-old daughter make a caterpillar out of an egg carton (which she did while I was there) and being a soccer mum. Barb’s advice has helped to strengthen and solidify relationships all over the world – I happily left loaded with reading materials, determined to learn a little more about my husband and his manly ways and to accept and celebrate our differences. If Barb’s personal happiness is anything to go by, her professional advice should be heeded at once.

The skill of his dedicated team of technical professionals and his close ties with the local community who use his products. WORMS DOWNUNDER Multi-award winning business, Worms Downunder, has made a significant contribution to organic waste recycling in Australia since 2006. Thousands of Worm Habitat systems have been distributed to households, schools, cafes, resorts, offices, hairdressers, kennels, zoos, councils and horse stables, helping to turn organic waste into natural, safe, compost material. Dr Paul Harrey and Dr Pene Mitchell, founders of Worms Downunder, have developed and now manufacture their effective, easy to use, robust and safe systems on the Sunshine Coast. It is important to the team at Worms Downunder that people succeed with their worm farms and so on-going support and advice is offered to all customers. Australians landfill is in excess of 13 million tons of organic waste each year which causes the second highest levels of methane emissions and other serious environmental issues. Worm habitats are an effective means of processing waste in an environmentally-sound way. If every household and business in Australia had a worm habitat, we could make a serious dent in the volumes we send to landfill,” said Dr Harrey. Worms Downunder is currently developing largescale, organic waste technology, with the help of a QLD Government Grant, which will be tested on-site at the University of the Sunshine Coast. This new technology will revolutionise the way businesses in Australia and overseas handle their organic waste. www.wormsdownunder.com.au

PWA FINANCIAL GROUP
Denise Donati moved to the Sunshine Coast with her family 12 years ago and made Buderim her home. She is now one of only a couple of nurses nationwide who are part owners in their own fertility clinic. While it is commonplace for doctors and scientists to set up fertility clinics, it is unusual for nurses to take this path. It is because of Denise’s entrepreneurial and competitive spirit that the business has been propelled forward in a highly successful way. So successful in fact that Denise has opened a second clinic in Bundaberg. Denise has an unrelenting ambition and she considers one of the major traits of a successful business person to be a sense of integrity, ensuring business transactions are conducted in an ethical manner at all times. Denise has a real passion for working with individuals and couples who need fertility assistance and knows that, through dedication and passion, she can and does make a difference to couples, irrespective of the treatment outcome. Denise has recently introduced the cutting edge technology egg freezing to Fertility Solutions. Egg freezing may be considered an option for women who have focused on a career, financial stability – or for some women who are yet to find ‘Mr Right’. Another reason that women would consider egg freezing is for medical purposes when she has a serious illness and treatment may leave her infertile (e.g. cancer treatment). www.fssc.com.au

hile the quintessential Australian summer may consist of surf, sand and Splice ice-creams, there continues to be a dangerous undercurrent to these otherwise carefree summer days. Pool safety remains a huge issue within young families, and Eve Kerry of Sink or Swim Swim School is making a huge difference within the community thanks to her innovative program. Born and raised in Peregian Beach, it was Eve’s love of the ocean which would help form her career. A history in surf life saving and a degree in nursing developed this dream further, but it was her work as a paramedic which truly began her profession in saving lives. “Being a paramedic, I have seen firsthand the importance of water safety and how vital it is for our children to know how to swim. I have seen the devastation and grief of losing a child or loved one to drowning,” says Eve. “The thing I love most is seeing a child or adult who has had a near drowning experience or has a pure fear of water who learns to swim, conquers their fears and learns to love and appreciate the water.” Being a mother to two young children herself, Eve has no problem admitting she takes her work home with
her − especially when it comes to water safety. “Nothing substitutes supervision and no matter how strong a swimmer you may be, never swim or surf alone,” she lists as her top tip for parents. Her success within the community is evident, with her swim school expanding rapidly as each day goes on. No more than three students to a class and one class per pool sets Sink or Swim apart, and the absence of free-swimming keeps the focus strongly on water safety. The strong, family-friendly atmosphere is no doubt a reflection of Eve’s own family life. “Having children has definitely changed my life. Every day is an adventure with a new challenge,” says Eve. “I love the Sunshine Coast as it is a relaxed, quite beautiful easy going place to live and a great place to bring up a young family.” Water safety is a huge issue on the Sunshine Coast each summer, and there is no time like the present to ensure that your family is as prepared as possible for the potential dangers beaches and pools can bring. Being a young parent herself, Eve Kerry understands the potential disasters the upcoming summer months can bring and hopes to spread her message of water safety to all young families on the Coast.

ike any other woman, one of Tracey Smith’s most basic creature comforts is the need for perfectly polished fingers and toes. After seeing a gap in the Sunshine Coast market for a nail polish with packaging to rival the beauty of the product inside, Tracey decided to combine her love of pretty things and manicures inside one label − Cate Ruby. A lover of beauty salons and all things pampering, Tracey’s venture into the beauty industry was inevitable. “I had been painting my nails for 18 years and had yet to find a polish that was packaged in a way that reflected the beautiful colours hiding in the bottle. From there the Cate Ruby brand was born − a beautiful bottle bursting with colours and sparkling with bling guaranteed to sparkle on your vanity.” Born in Goondiwindi but a true Sunshine Coast local, it is here Tracey has truly found her calling. Currently living on the Sunshine Coast’s largest strawberry farm with her husband and young son Buster, Tracey, who lived all over Queensland before finally settling on the Coast, is living her dream lifestyle. “I just love the
location − I have a farm lifestyle yet I am only two minutes from town, 20 minutes from a beach and less than one hour to Brisbane.” Employing anywhere up to 200 workers in peak season, the strawberry farm attracts a wide variety of people, all focused on relatively hard labour. This world is a stark contrast to that of the typical beauty aficionado. A lack of experience in the beauty industry didn’t hinder Tracey, and an attraction to beautiful things has proven to be the key ingredient in her accomplishments on the Sunshine Coast and beyond. With no plans to slow down anytime soon, Tracey dreams of one day being able to open a Cate Ruby store somewhere on the Coast that incorporates this unique blend of superior, salon-quality nail care and lots of bling. Proving passion far outweighs experience when it comes to success, Tracey Smith has risen to the top of the Sunshine Coast beauty pack with a love of what she does and sparkling attitude to rival even the most adorned nail polish bottle.

my favourite things ... The one thing I love about working in magazines (well, there are many things …) is I can wear anything I like. One day I might dress in a corporate power suit for work, complete with red lipstick, the next day I can be rocking all black and animal print … the boundaries are endless in my field, and a far cry from my khaki-wearing, tour guide days! And that is why I just love our ‘My Mini Mag’ section of profile. This is where I get to have fun and scour the streets for new products, designers and must-have items. This month is no exception – I have uncovered some raw, local talent including the likes of designer Melanie Harris of Eva Lilly Couture and satisfied my Virgo desire for white, white and more white with our profile loves page, ‘All White Now’. Got to love white! So discover a few of my favourite things in this month’s My Mini Mag.
This summer’s most glamorous must-have item is the kaftan – perfect for throwing over a bikini or even for sunset cocktails with jeweled sandals. This season sees Byron Bay-based designer Amanda Gilham (also the designer behind the label Mimosa) launch Phyllis Boho. The fledgling label is an affordable, kaftan-only range with exclusive prints. Jill Wright, former fashion model and real estate agent, has recently opened the doors of her new fashion boutique, princess polly, in Mooloolaba. She shares her fashion secrets with profile magazine.
profile: What do you love most about your job? jill: I’ve noticed Sunshine Coast girls are extremely fashion-forward with their style. The best thing about my job is that it allows me to focus on what they want to wear and bring it to the Coast to make dressing in the latest trends extremely easy and accessible. profile: What looks can we expect to see this season? jill: White is featuring heavily in all the shows right now along with nude, black lace and bright colours. Watery ink prints or big prints are huge, featuring oversized flowers in fruit colours. My key styling ideas are dark lips and man-style detective hats.
I believe every day is an opportunity to play with new elements in your wardrobe and dressing-up is not just for the evening. profile: What is your fashion inspiration? jill: Mary Evans, the founder of Princess Polly inspires me. She is a great example of how a young woman can follow her dreams. A favourite quote of Mary’s: “You only have one life …” profile: What and where is your favourite boutique? jill: I don’t have a favourite boutique in general as I believe you can find beautiful pieces anywhere. From secondhand to designer … it’s about keeping your eyes peeled!
profile: What must-have item should we all have in our wardrobes this season? jill: A long, loose dress in chiffon is key for this season!
profile: What is coming up in-store? jill: White lace in cute girly shapes, high waisted full skirts in flirty lengths and cute shorts to mix and match with anything.
profile: Who is your favourite designer? jill: My favourite designer is an Aussie girl whose label is called Miss Unkon. She has managed to tap into a feminine yet funky design element.
profile: What is your fashion fetish? jill: Everything – shoes, bags, belts, jewellery! But it all starts with the dress ...
profile: How would you describe your own style? jill: Fashion to me is all about having fun and pushing the boundaries. At the moment I’m taking soft, feminine influences and mixing them with an edgy beach feel to create a unique look.
profile: What is your favourite fashion moment? jill: The day that fashion became my career by opening Princess Polly Mooloolaba. Phone 5444 6280

advice
going to extreme lengths
with Wade Blackford Over the past few years, hair extension companies have been popping up all over the place. Each time I attend the annual Sydney Hair Expo (Australia’s biggest hair and beauty expo) more and more extension companies have appeared – all claiming to be better than the last! This got me thinking. Why are some hair extensions better than others? Well, let me explain. Hair types are as follows: Remy The highest quality extension hair is human remy hair. Remy hair still possesses the cuticle layer which is the outermost part of the hair strand – resembling shingles on a roof. All remy hair has the cuticle layer of the hair flowing in the same direction, flowing the way it would naturally. The cuticle layer is important when concerned with hair tangling longevity and how well the hair shines. When the cuticle layer is intact and laying flat the hair is capable of reflecting light, resulting in beautiful, shiny hair. Non-remy Non-remy hair is the most popular and commonly available form of hair. It is also known as fallen hair. The roots and tips of hairs are mixed up in non-remy hair. Tangling is a problem as a result of this but since non-remy hair is inexpensive, it is the largest selling kind of hair.
Hair purity I recommend single origin hair from Russia, Europe or India to be used for a great hair extension. Mixing hair origins (for example, Indian with Chinese hair) affects the weft (weave) as it consists of different types of hair. This creates unstable strands and makes it harder to secure sufficiently, which means the product will not stand the effects of wash, wear and styling as robustly as single origin hair and can lead to premature thinning, tangling, poor colour response (due to opposing reaction times) and an overall shorter lifespan. Processed hair Most human hair used for weaves and wigs is derived from Asia. It is collected from the barber’s floor or the floors of Indian temples and aggressively treated with acid and other chemicals which destroy the cuticle partially or totally. (Lower-quality human hair extensions are sometimes even mixed with animal and synthetic hair to lower the price.) In the hair industry this hair is commonly called processed hair. do’s and don’ts to help slow the skin ageing process with Leigh Campbell Maybe you’re in your 20s or early 30s and you think you can’t possibly have (gulp) ageing skin yet. Well, you’re wrong. Your skin’s ‘youthfulness’ has less to do with age and more to do with how it’s been treated, so if exposed to sun, smoke and stress, your skin will start ‘acting old’, losing collagen, glow and elasticity. Lines will develop prematurely and your skin may look dull. It is easier to prevent damage than to repair it, but the good news is that you can put the brakes on prematurely ageing skin and you can reverse the ageing process ... well, to a point. Here are five dos and five don’ts to help slow down and reverse the ageing process and leave your skin glowing at any age. 1. Do – stop smoking. The fact is, smoking is the second biggest cause of skin damage after sun exposure. Why? Nicotine constricts blood vessels and decreases the flow of oxygen to the skin. 2. Do – exfoliate. Done properly not only does it rid your face of dead skin, but it can improve texture as well – by reducing fine lines. 3. Do – use an eye cream. One of the first places to show ageing, the skin around the eyes is thin so protect this delicate skin with a good eye cream. 4. Do – wear sunscreen everyday. Even in winter it can take just 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure to damage the skin.
44
profilemagazine
5. Do – have professional salon treatments. A professional facial can work wonders when it come to preventing ageing. 1. Don’t – forget your neck and chest. The neck and chest are first to show the signs of ageing so whatever product is left after you’ve cleansed or exfoliated the face be sure to sweep up the neck and across the chest. 2. Don’t – tan. Once signs of ageing appear, you’ll be spending a lot of money to reverse it. 3. Don’t – get lazy. Once you start a homecare anti-ageing regimen, you need to keep it up for best effects. 4. Don’t – be afraid to test out your massage skills. Gently massage the skin in soft, upwards circular motions to stimulate lymphatic drainage which assists in removing toxins and waste from the skin. 5. Don’t – scrub with all your might. Exfoliating too vigorously can break the delicate surface layer of the skin, causing it to become sensitive to the elements such as hot water and wind. how’s your bite? with Dr David Hendrey The jaw joint or TMJ (temperomandibular joint) is one of the most amazing joints of the body. We use it every time we open our mouths … literally. When we talk, chew, yawn, sing and laugh, we must open this joint. The TMJ is designed to literally dislocate every time we open our mouths wide. As the muscles contract a smooth glide should occur on each side in perfect harmony and synchronisation. This joint has a thin disc that helps guide the movement of the jaw as we open and close the mouth. Test your own TMJ right now by gentle placing your fingers flat on both sides of your face and slowly open your mouth. You should feel the jaw moving forward and down evenly and smoothly. There should never be a click, pop or pain. Problems with this joint, commonly known as TMJ dysfunction, can be debilitating. I remember one episode that was so severe I couldn’t eat or think straight due to the pain. Symptoms of TMJ dysfunction include:
•• locked jaw •• reduced ability to open your mouth •• jaw pain •• swelling over the jaw •• neck, shoulder and back pain Sadly, headaches are rather common and so many sufferers of TMJ dysfunction do not realise and simply reach for pain killers to help themselves cope. If this is you, help might be closer that you think. Chiropractors are experts in the normal and abnormal function of the TMJ. There are many techniques that are very successful in re-balancing the TMJ and reducing the tension around this joint. If TMJ dysfunction is chronic, it is highly likely your dentist will need to help realign the bite also after the TMJ is working properly again. Dentists and chiropractors have been working together for decades in the management of this problem. If in doubt, ask your dentist or chiropractor to check your jaw joint on your next visit.

male menopause with Dr Alison Jamieson We are all ageing; there is nothing we can do about that. But so much focus is given to female menopause that poor men are often quite neglected. It may surprise you to know that men go through menopause, or ‘andropause’ as it is also known. Male menopause is a process similar to women, but the decline in testosterone is at a much slower rate over a longer period of time, whereas female menopause involves a more dramatic drop of oestrogen at around the age of 50. So is this a normal part of ageing that men should live with? Not if men want to avoid the consequences of the andropause – such as reduced physical activity, impotence, depression, obesity, increased risk of degenerative disease, fracture and a generally poorer quality of life. Many testosterone replacement supplements are available through your local doctor to boost testosterone levels, but can testosterone be increased naturally? The good news is, yes it can.
48

Losing the gut is one way. If you are overweight, especially around the belly, the testosterone you are making could be turning into the female hormone oestradiol. This can be seen on some men as ‘man boobs’ and heralds an increased risk of prostate cancer (as well as not driving the women wild). To combat this, reduce fat, increase muscle and eat a diet based on vegetables, salads, meats, fruits, nuts, seeds, eggs and fish. Avoid grains and sugar, do more exercise and take targeted natural nutrients which have been demonstrated to improve testosterone such as zinc and resveratrol – a natural compound found in grapes and peanuts. The benefits of increasing testosterone include improvements in libido and sexual function, bone density, muscle mass, body composition, mood, red blood cell production, cognition, heart disease and quality of life. life
The most important underlying cause for depression and anxiety can be overcome in time for a happy christmas – and it’s easy! Christmas is a time to be there for your family, laughing, playing, relaxing and enjoying each other, but for some, it’s a struggle just to get up in the morning. Your energy may be low, your motivation has been missing for a long time, and feeling happy is something you’ve forgotten how to do. It’s such an important time to be showing your children and your partner how much they really mean to you, and how much you love them, but when anger, irritation, anxiety, and constant critical thoughts invade your mind, it can be a struggle to pretend to the outside world that everything’s rosy. Insomnia, overwhelming stress, foggy brain, and feelings of sadness are happening too often, you can’t remember the person you used to be. It can be hard to find anything in life that excites you anymore. One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of motivation for life. Stress and anger causing palpitations, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also occur.
Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them. The main cause has been found in the gut and seems to be widespread throughout the community. It’s a malicious infection mainly picked up from travelling overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is often only detected in specialised testing. This infection has been shown to release a neuronal toxin, affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It has not often been associated with mental health conditions even though studies are available showing its impact on the brain. It can be passed on from person to person very easily, and so more than one person in a household may be suffering from similar symptoms and both may be affected.
Infections are the most common out of seven causes, and are one part of permanently treating mental health conditions. The 7 steps program has been proven with testing to improve the brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication, in adults and children for all mental health conditions. If you would like to know more, please call the clinic on 5443 1987 for a free half hour consultation, or check the website for the next webinar coming up in January on the 7 Steps to Freedom from Anxiety, Depression & ADHD. Fortunately it is quite easy to address, and most symptoms are relieved quickly. Some patients have suffered depression for four decades, and improved out of sight after just weeks of treatment.

busy living is not active living with Dan Sullivan A good friend of mine quite often uses the term “you’re shifting the deck chairs mate”, which means I am trying to be busy for the sake of being busy with no real purpose. Unfortunately I’m not alone. We find ourselves doing this in our lives frequently, unknowingly. Whilst we all know the secret to a work-life balance is to work smarter not harder, the reality is that life throws curve balls at us and we find ourselves dealing with crises in ways that are only too familiar and fall into our usual comfort zones. Firstly you cannot blame others for being ‘busy’: your staff, your kids, your customers, the government, you are in direct control of the decisions you make. Until you decide to take responsibility to be absolutely clear on the lifestyle that you want and act on it, you will find yourself falling back into an all too familiar “shifting of the deck chairs”. A strategy I use in my life in designing my perfect week is that I always start with myself first – training for triathlons, a romantic date with my wife, play time with my beautiful girls and some
50
profilemagazine
education time for myself. These are important personally to me – they make me feel good and if I feel good, everyone else I associate with will feel good. Another strategy that works for me is what I call my ‘daily fit five’. Basically my daily fit five relates to working consistently on the five dimensions of wellness every day. The first is my daily movement action – move your body in some way every day it may only be for six minutes and often I find myself skipping in the dark on the driveway if I have had a big day at work. Secondly my daily eat well action – it’s not always easy to eat the perfect meal, however you can make a conscious effort to get some good food and plenty of water into your diet each day. Thirdly my daily feel good action – this is a big one for me, encouraging your mates makes them feel good about themselves and you will find that emotionally you will be more in control.
Fourth, is my daily learning action – I make a point of learning something that I didn’t know the day before, regardless of how trivial it is. This keeps my mind stimulated. Crosswords are fantastic for this. Last but not least in my daily fit five is my daily relaxation or what I call – ‘purposeful voidness’ – releasing the chatter in your head. There are numerous strategies for this such as meditation, prayer, or just even just sitting on a hill looking at the boats. Everyone needs to shut down their computer. So there it is – my daily fit five – your guide to well-rounded proactive living. When you are focused, centred and in control, your life runs smoother and you achieve more goals. Remember, aim for progression, not perfection. Small manageable changes every day will make your life active, not just busy. healthy summer toes with Karl Schussig
Ingrown toenails are a very common occurrence in most podiatry clinics. Even a minor ingrown toenail can quickly flare into something much worse if left untreated, and before you know it you have a severely infected and painful toenail. Unfortunately, most ingrown toenails are self-inflicted. This may sound strange but it’s true. Poor cutting technique and self-mutilation by trying to dig the junk out of the sides of the nails (toe jam) causes most ingrown toenails. Tight footwear is also a common cause of ingrown toenails, and warmer months seem to produce more ingrown toenails than cooler months as the skin becomes much softer due to sweat and retained moisture within footwear. This is also the perfect environment for simple infections to occur if there is a break in the skin around the nail. Regardless of how an ingrown toenail occurs, the treatment is quite simple. First, your podiatrist will examine the affected toe and take a detailed medical history. Is this the first time the nail has been infected and ingrown or is it an ongoing problem? The answer to these questions will determine the type of treatment undertaken. Is the ingrown toenail painful? Sometimes the ingrown nail can look terrible but can be relatively pain-free. If this is the case, your podiatrist will probably
trim away the nail from the nail groove and pack the area with sterile cotton wool and dress with a sterile dressing. If basic treatment is not successful then a minor surgical procedure is sometimes required and most podiatrists are very skilled at performing this surgical procedure. Before commencing nail surgery, a more detailed history is taken to make sure the patient is suitable for the procedure. Local anaesthetic is administered into both sides of the offending toe, and the toe will usually go numb within minutes. The procedure itself is relatively painless. Once the toe is numb, your podiatrist will take out a very small part of the nail (the part that is normally causing the problem) and will then apply a mild acid directly to the nail bed to prevent the nail from ever regrowing … guaranteed. The whole procedure is completed in less than 60 minutes. Once the area is dressed, the patient walks out of the clinic pain-free and rarely encounters pain even when the anaesthetic has worn off. dental stocking fillers with Dr Simone Ricketts Need a few more different ideas for Christmas stocking fillers or gifts? Consider thinking outside the square. Consider a gift that is not only practical, but also enhances good oral and general health. Welcome to a world where there is something for everyone … mini bottles of mouth rinse, breath fresheners, toothbrushes, floss, toothpaste travel packs, pikster brushes, rechargeable electric toothbrushes, battery powered toothbrushes, replacement brush heads, tooth fairy bags, a tooth whitening voucher – so much choice! With regard to children, there is an equally vast array of toothy items on the market. Colgate produce a Smiles My First Toothbrush and also a Shrek or Bratz or Looney Tunes toothbrush with matching mint gel toothpaste, while Oral B produces ‘Stages’ toothbrushes and toothpastes for babies and children at different ages, to name just a couple of brands. Further, a review of the toothpaste choices on the market makes me instantly think of the memorable milk advert on TV where the man is bombarded with a huge number of milk choices however he “just wants to buy milk that tastes like real milk”. Colgate alone has 15 different choices of toothpaste on

the market … Colgate Total, Colgate Total Mint Stripe, Colgate Total Whiten, Colgate Advanced Fresh, Colgate Sensitive, Colgate Maximum Fresh, Colgate Maximum White, Colgate Cavity Protection, Colgate Tartar Control, Colgate Simply White, Colgate 2 in 1, Colgate Advanced Whitening, Colgate Baking Soda and Peroxide, Colgate Kids, Colgate Triple Action! Phew! In terms of surface stains and plaque, there are always new and innovative products appearing on the market with the aim of enhancing your oral experience. An amazing product from Oral B called the Oxyjet 8500 Centre is a superior tooth and gum cleaning device which basically uses millions of microbubbles in a rotating or a pulsating water stream. Ideal for helping clean bridges, implants, orthodontic appliances, not to mention good old teeth and gums generally; it could be a great little gift. For a unique Christmas treat for someone who has everything, the ultimate gift with a difference ... an Oral B tongue cleaner! Now this will set tongues wagging. Literally. Few things resonate more with a passionate Italian man than his food, his faith and his family. And Maurizio Fenu is no exception. Coming from a tight-knit Italian family, Maurizio lives his own version of the movie and book phenomenon that is Eat, Pray, Love on a daily basis.

“Eating with family is the foundation of life. It’s a way to appreciate life and to express yourself. Having a belief in God, whatever your religion, gives life purpose – it’s beautiful. And love is the same as food – it’s the foundation to everything. Unconditional love for my wife and my children is the maximum way of expressing how I feel about them.” For the past eight years Maurizio has poured this same passion into designing exquisite jewellery and is now showcasing his most beautiful pieces in a very special collection called Maurizio Jewellery Designs. “I have personally selected these amazing pieces because they are the best of the best. These designs are an extension of who I am - they are created with love. I invite you to come into our Mooloolaba store to view this superb collection.”

christmas function and gift guide
getting into the christmas spirit with Dr Michael Ryan Christmas is upon us and it is a great time to spoil yourself and others! In terms of wines, I would suggest going for quality not quantity, to make sure you still have a bit left in the tank for Boxing Day. I love starting Christmas breakfast with Moet or Veuve Cliquot Rose Champagne. Janz NV Rose from Tasmania is also excellent. The complexity of the Rose goes well with smoked ocean trout and scrambled eggs. Divine. As the day progresses and the task of trying to avoid paper cuts and ribbontearing-induced RSI becomes harder, a cooling Hahn Vienna Red lager will be just what the doctor ordered. Give Mum a champagne with a dash of Kir Royale Cassis liqueur, and she will not even flinch when the kids demand yet another game of electronic disco twister. Perfect.
will swirl around your glass and combine with a lovely crisp palate. Match-up the turkey and ham to that idiosyncratic Aussie icon – the sparkling red. I love Seppelts Show Reserve or E & E Black Pepper Sparkling Shiraz. Keep powering on with a Massena 2008 Barossa Shiraz. When tucking into the rich fruit cake, try a chilled Liqueur Muscat or Pedro Ximenez sherry. When you are in a semi-comatose state and need a lift, there is nothing more refreshing than a Bombay gin and San Pellegrino sparkling grapefruit. You will be ready to start all over again! Yes, it truly is the season for giving and sharing with loved ones and friends. In fact, if I can give some of my rellies a good hangover, then my job is done for another year!
Lunch can be tricky depending on your Christmas beliefs: seafood or roast, or a bit of both? Start off with some oysters and a lovely Isabel Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough NZ. The refreshing notes of gooseberries and passion fruit
what’s cooking in the kelly house this christmas? with Tony Kelly This is a question I get asked at least three times a day this time of year. And year in, year out, I follow the same rule … keep it simple! My mum, my sister and all her family will be joining my wife, Melisa, myself and my boys on our deck for a lazy Christmas lunch which often ends at about 6 o’clock every year. I guess they all think having a chef in the family is a real bonus in times like these! We always seem to have a great lunch, fuss-free and more importantly, with great food. I think the key is to plan your menu well. Think about the weather (it’s usually in the high 30’s), think about your fridge space, and also the clean-up. So I always start with the hot food straight off the BBQ. This year, like last year I’m doing some massive Mooloolaba prawns, split straight down the middle with a drizzling of garlic, chilli, parsley, fresh lemon and olive oil and then placing them straight on the grill. I am also doing a leg of lamb which I am buying with the bone out (have a look at Cotton Tree Bulk Meats for their Sovereign Lamb – it’s first class.) I am going to rub some fresh garlic, fennel and cumin seeds on the lamb, then throw it straight on the BBQ … easy, right?

Then some simple salads – a caesar and some fresh Noosa red tomatoes, and the only hot side-dish – duck fat potatoes with rosemary and sea salt. No fuss, but tasty. Dessert is an easy one as my Mum makes the best Christmas pudding on earth! It was originally my Nan’s recipe, but since she passed away in the late ‘90s Mum has taken over the reigns, and let me tell you, my Nan would be proud! Mum already has the fruit soaking, and within days the pudding will be hanging in her kitchen and we will all be waiting with bated breath to slice into it on Christmas day. This will be accompanied by a little home-made custard and fresh cream. We will then be well and truly on our way to planning our NYE resolution … to lose weight! If you are chasing some pointers or some fresh ideas, stick you head into The Kitchen Pantry in Maroochydore and say hi. I look forward to seeing you.

CHRISTMAS PUDDING
M
erry Christmas everyone. What an exciting month, with lots of parties to celebrate this magical time. I am really looking forward to having all my family together on December 25 and always make my delicious christmas pudding, so I hope you enjoy this recipe too. What I especially love about my pudding is that its easy to make and so low in fat. At one gram per serve, it is a real guilt-free winner. An added bonus is that the pudding can be made ahead of time, so the cook isn’t working too hard on the day. If you need some extra advice or support on how to manage Christmas and your waistline, refer to my sixth cookbook. I wish you all a very happy and healthy Christmas and may 2011 bring all you wish for, and more ...
christmas pudding (makes 16 servings)
ingredients •• 7 slices multigrain bread (crumble including crusts)
•• ¾ teaspoon bicarb soda
•• 1 cup skim milk
•• 1 cup mashed banana
•• 3 cups (500g) mixed fruit
•• ½ cup apple sauce (in jar)
•• 2 teaspoons mixed spices
•• 1 tablespoon Parisian essence (optional)
•• ½ cup rum or brandy
•• 1¼ cups plain flour
•• 3 egg whites method Put the breadcrumbs in a large mixing bowl, heat milk until hot, then pour over the breadcrumbs. Stir together until really mushy and the bread has absorbed all the milk. Add in the mixed fruit, spices and rum / brandy. Mix together well. Beat the egg whites into the mixture well. Mix bicarb soda with apple sauce (it will froth) then add to the bowl. Stir in the mashed banana and parisian essence (this will make a darker pudding). Fold in the flour and mix until all the ingredients are well combined. Pour into a 19cm x 9cm pudding steamer that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Spray the lid as well. Secure the lid. Put a saucer turned upside down into the boiler, put the pudding dish on top of the saucer and fill with boiling water which reaches ¾ of the way up the steamer. Steam in a covered boiler simmering for four hours. Check the water level occasionally, top it up if needed. To reheat, place in the boiler for one hour before serving.

O
nce upon a time, we could holiday on a whim – we’d regularly snap up a last minute online special, throw together a quick bag of essentials and off we’d whiz on a perfectly impromptu mini break. Bliss! Fast forward to 2010 … with two ageing cats, a dog and a 20-month-old son, ‘spontaneous’ is no longer a word regularly used in our household. Holidays need to be strategically planned weeks if not months in advance. Who will feed the cats? Will we pop Henry the much-loved dog in a kennel or can we find a suitable dog-friendly escape? And finally, what type of holiday will keep our little one entertained and does said holiday resort / house / apartment provide a high chair? How times have changed. While funky little beachfront apartments used to be our cup of tea, we have discovered a new vacation destination … the holiday home – pet friendly, of course! Not only does a holiday home offer a lot more space for a little family to spread out, they boast the creature comforts of home – plus some. And you’re not limited when it comes to location. Beachfront, hinterland, rural … pets are welcome at many a holiday home, from posh pads to beach shacks. Websites specialising in pet friendly holidays are just a google away; our ‘go to’ option is www.stayz.com.au. Stayz caters to people who do not want to leave their pets out of the family fun or want to save money on boarding expenses. Deciding we needed a little break away, I stumbled across The Pinnacle via Stayz– a five bedroom paradise with panoramic views of the Gold Coast and everything you’d expect from a multimillion-dollar home. The beauty of renting a holiday home like The Pinnacle is that you can live like a king, even if it is only for a couple of days. We all deserve a little luxury every now and again. We arrived at The Pinnacle after dark, weary from battling peak hour traffic and with an overly excited puppy and an overly exhausted child both glaring at us from the back seat. One look at that view and all our troubles faded away. The view was beyond breathtaking, beyond spectacular, beyond beautiful. It is views like this that reinforce the old chestnut ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. What a picture. It is was like Christmas on steroids! A sea of fairy lights flickered below us as we surveyed the view – our view – albeit for a few days. Ah, the serenity. At this point it really didn’t matter what the inside of the house looked like – a shack would have been completely fine. We had our view – from Stradbroke Island in the north to Burleigh Heads in the south. But the ohhing and ahhing continued as we made our way through the front gate and into the Bali-inspired garden. As Bali regulars, we immediately felt at home – thatched roofing, over-sized lounge chairs, tropical plants – and that was just the front garden and deck. Stretching the full length of the house, we knew we’d spend a great deal of time on that deck. Now to the front door … the enormously impressive front door. We held our collective breaths; even Henry our Cavoodle was beside himself with anticipation as to what could possibly be inside.
The website blurb notes that the home had been recently refurbished by a local Master Builder; you immediately appreciate the care and attention taken with the renovation. While Balineseinspired, the home is incredible modern – sleek and contemporary. The entry area is open-plan and spacious, housing a state-of-the-art kitchen (with stone bench tops and stainless steel appliances), informal dining area, formal dining area and lounge room (with L shaped leather couch). Off the informal dining area is one of the three Balinese pavilions, housing a cute little breakfast bar and the barbecue, overlooking dense rainforest. Although it was chilly when we stayed, we were still bursting to see the piece de resistance – the pool. The photos on the website don’t actually do it justice – there aren’t too many pools that boast panoramic views from Straddie to Burleigh … but we had found one. Back to the tour. There are four bedrooms off the hallway that all share a spacious and beautifully fitted-out bathroom, and a larger bedroom at the other end of the home with its own ensuite and four single beds – perfect for those family holidays away when the kids need their own space (and you’re happy to give it to them). And as for the main bedroom? Superb. After opening the sliding doors we felt like we’d literally perched ourselves on top of the world. There is a massive built-in wardrobe that runs the length of the wall (just in case you plan to stay for longer than a few days) and a stunning bathroom with all the trimmings. The house can sleep 14 people with three queen beds, two double beds and four single beds, and there are four split system air conditioning units throughout the home. It’s perfect for a big family seeking a little space, or a few families wanting to share some time away. We would definitely come back with a few friends in tow. What we appreciated the most about The Pinnacle on our long weekend away was the serenity – it is incredibly peaceful up there, and peace was just what we needed. Besides the odd local walking their dog, it’s just you, the house and the views. It’s the perfect place to recharge the batteries and take time-out. Sunrise is well worth the early wake up too – not that we had much choice, courtesy of an early rising baby. There is also ample space for our puppy who thoroughly enjoyed his little break, as did our son, who spent most of the four days exploring our new home and enjoying the lush front yard. We only really left to stock up on groceries (there’s a shopping centre at the bottom of the hill) and do a spot of shopping. If you’re looking to do a little more than laze around on an over-sized lounge chair, you’re only minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast. Robina Town Centre is just 1.5km away, and Burleigh Beach is about a 15 minute drive. Apparently the area is littered with quality golf courses too, so there really is something for every family member. Our break at The Pinnacle was one of the most memorable we have had as a family, and as our son grows we know he will enjoy it more. We will definitely be back, and soon … only at Henry the dog’s orders, of course.

Looking to absorb yourself in a creative journey of life and its immense sense of reconstructive and deconstructive power by two of the leading artists in their field? If so, it is time you made a note in your diary to attend the incredible upcoming exhibition ‘Reconstruction Deconstruction – A Journey Of Intensity’ at Studio 4 Gallery.
In a rare and precious moment Kim Schoenberger, the multi-award winning ceramic art sensation and Richard Stiller, the highly talented art photographer who uses built sets and layers of imagery to tell his story, are coming together for the first time to exhibit their latest works in a show of original art, and it is not to be missed.
Richard Stiller
dark knight
Richard Stiller is not just your average art photographer. Richard sees life through the lens in a way that only Richard can, creating his work with the utmost devotion and dedication to the concepts of free unblemished thought, leading to pieces which are hugely appreciated and admired by all who come across them. He has a unique perspective of the world around him which he expresses in his visual art through the use of illusion, light, shadows, layering, sets and a streak of darkness. Attached to the Studio 4 Gallery in Marcoola, Richard’s work is an absolute expression of himself, to the point where Richard refuses to look at other people’s pieces in order to stop his mind being influenced or even ‘polluted’ by them. He wants his work to be of the purest creative form; that of absolute expression.
Kim Shoenberger
a free spirit Described by her peers and elders as a “delightful mix of talent and determination whose teachers and mentors are inspired by”, “an exciting young artist”, “a delight to work with”, and as the creator of art that is “instantly engaging with an originality and immediacy”, Kim Schoenberger is a woman of depth and passion channeling her raw creative energy in order to express and reflect life through different art forms. With a strong connection to the earth, Kim believes in the universe’s guiding hand in life’s journey and she harnesses this power to breathe through her art. Recognised for her ‘Unearthed’ ceramic works, one is struck with a sense of history and archaeology by this collection. In the series, Kim has a natural affinity in the medium of clay and explores this gloriously with a strong appreciation for its strong and continuing connection with the earth. Kim explores ancient shapes, vessels, functional forms and detailed carved decoration in the work, and is heavily influenced from the Minoan period. In Kim’s more recent series of works – ‘Discarded’ the accent is somewhat lighter, consisting of a more playful reflection of her thoughts. Her fascinating three-dimensional assemblages are made of materials of old to project Kim’s interpretation of the exploration of re-birth and cultural evolution, passing commentary on our 21st century’s ‘throw away’ consumer society where items are discarded without a thought for the memories and energy left in them. Kim brings them back to life however in a new form, much like a reincarnation, and the result is truly magnificent.
Richard’s work nearly always contains a slice of black humour – for example in the way that his image is presented (to make the viewer question whether the image is a photo or a drawing), to the way Richard places objects or people in his scenes. One can almost imagine Richard smirking as he puts a picture together.
Studio 4 Gallery
On asking Richard what aesthetic he likes, he shrugs. It is much like trying to explain a feeling that one has – it just cannot be expressed in words. What can be seen, however, is that Richard likes to use different effects in his work, from computer imaging, to digital enhancement, to old-fashioned exposure techniques. He crosses a broad spectrum and has, as he describes, “a thousand ideas in his head” when he starts to work.
Studio 4 Gallery has become a highly esteemed creative hub of outstanding art since its opening in May 2010 and is committed to exhibiting some of the most exciting boutique work, including the collections of local artists from the Coast in addition to art from Sydney and Melbourne designers across a range of genres such as jewellery, millinery, painting, prints, sculptures and textiles.
So watch this space; watch this dark knight. Richard Stiller. A sensational emerging art photographer.

banking – a checklist for your business with Laurie Clarke
We recently added a new member to our team, so I’ve been able to spend more time out of the office meeting with local businesses over the past few months. It’s been interesting to hear from a wide variety of people, both individuals and business customers, about what they currently get from their bank and what they would like to get. From these conversations and our own experiences I’ve put together a small checklist of business’s needs – call it a ‘banking relationship wishlist’ if you like. The items listed in the checklist will no doubt be of varying importance to each customer, but it’s worth taking a few minutes to run through the checklist and evaluate your existing banking relationship. What some people don’t realise is that there are genuine alternatives in the banking market and if
you’re not getting what you need, your business deserves better and it’s time to review the options available. Go through the following checklist – are these important for your company, and if so, does your bank offer these benefits? •• Industry knowledge / expertise •• Direct access to your banker •• Your banker has an interest in your business •• A joint annual review of your business and its financial needs •• Willing to work with your advisers
•• One-stop-shop •• Short queues most of the time •• Parking readily available If you answered no to some of the above, it may be time to think about your banking options ... Most businesses review their suppliers periodically. Banking should be no different. Don’t settle for second best. BoQ Maroochydore 5443 2711 laurie.clarke@boq.com.au
•• Products and services that meet your needs •• Efficient payment systems •• Deal with the same people every time •• One or two staff know your name

unfair dismissals on the rise with Michalle Faulkner
Days lost to workplace disputes have increased 30 percent since the Fair Work Act was introduced last year. The Australian Bureau of Statistics found that 126,500 working days (an average of 3.3 days per 1,000 workers) were lost in the first year of the Fair Work Act up until June 2010. This is compared with an average of 2.7 days per 1,000 workers under the WorkChoices era from 2006 to 2008.
It costs employees as little as $56 to lodge an unfair dismissal claim, yet it could cost employers as much as 26 weeks pay.
Gadens Lawyers workplace relations partner John-Anthony Hodgens says there has been a marked increase in workplace disputes following the global economic crisis. He says employees are now more willing to take action against their bosses and one another, more so than before the economic downturn.
“Many people make claims around hours of work, workloads, bullying and harassment,” he said.
Hodgens goes on to say that over the past year, performance management was the most common reason for employees taking action against their bosses, followed by stress-related claims.
January 1 2011 once again brings more new changes for employers to consider, such as the definition of ‘small business’ with respect to unfair dismissal obligations and the application of modern awards for all state employers (sole traders and partnerships). EastCoast Human Resource Group 5443 6022 www.eastcoasthr.com.au
The current hot case recently involving David Jones illustrates that legal action does happen (and it can be costly and very public in major cases). It is something which will continue to affect employers and the way they run their businesses.

office affair$ with Sarah McMahon
•• Eyes shut for 8 •• At the office for 10 •• In the car for 1.5 •• Home and awake for 4.5 Don’t tell home, but I think I’m having an affair with my workplace It’s a common phenomenon – the on-again, off-again workplace romance. It’s a shameful tryst; one we feel obligated to carry on with despite protests from family, and it is made all the more reprehensible by the fact that our homes are designed just for us, are attuned to our needs and are a common source of our personal happiness. When you do the math it’s alarming to see how many of us are guilty of spending more waking hours in the workplace than we do at home, and what’s more, in workplace surroundings that zap our motivation and substantially slow our productivity – hence the long hours. We would not ask our family to live in a less than desirable environment for an extended period of time, so

why when it comes to the work environment, do we expect it of our staff? Unlike improvements on the home front, we can be reluctant to spend money on the work environment because of the perceived lack of return on investment. We assume that the quality of work and its production turna-round will be the same whether it comes from a windowless cubicle or an architecturally designed environment that references a company’s purpose, goals and culture. The customer doesn’t see beyond reception, so who else is there to impress, right? Wrong. The single largest investment for a business can be their staff By value-adding to the work environment of a business, a return will be gained not only from the property but from staff also. If a business can produce an environment that an employee loves to be associated with, then their motivation is no longer driven by the next bonus or set of holidays. An employee that comes to work because it is an environment they enjoy being
in will produce more, at a faster rate, and contribute positively to the company culture and its public image in the community. It’s not about a completely renovated fit-out, or a custom designed building, unless you want it to be. With the help of an architect, it doesn’t necessarily mean tearing down walls or parting with huge expense. It could be as simple as a magnetic ‘jigsaw’ wall in the staffroom. Instead of being completed on a horizontal surface, a jigsaw wall sees pieces attached via magnets, allowing staff on breaks or waiting for the jug to boil to collectively put together the puzzle as a team. A professional designer can help you and your staff think, work and interact in a way they wouldn’t have previously. Can you afford not to consider your business environment? the business of christmas with Jodie Thompson You are probably up to your neck in Christmas parties, events and holidays. Christmas is fun, but have you ever thought of using it as an opportunity to improve your business and its many relationships? Christmas parties There are many networking opportunities that arise at this time of year. You may have never considered other companies’ Christmas parties as a wonderful networking opportunity, but they are. This is especially the case if your business is compatible with the host company’s demographic. I am not recommending you highjack the party and launch into your sales pitch. It is an opportunity to get to know others and build a network around you. The tip is to have fun, relax and the rest will fall into place. Almost every business can benefit from networking – it can also generate a significant amount of business for your company. A good network can
be seen as a business time-saver. If you have a strong network, you will find your phone calls are returned more quickly and easily; you will have access to greater information, ideas and contacts. This can make you more efficient and productive with more money in your pocket. Take advantage of the Christmas spirit and introduce yourself to lots of potential clients who would normally be harder to get to. Don’t forget to give them a follow-up call after Christmas too. Don’t overlook having your own internal Christmas party to thank your team and boost team morale. It is a great time for team members to get to know each other. New customers Over the Christmas period, your business may also pick up new clients and contracts. The most important thing to do now is seize the opportunities and keep them! This is especially the case for
retailers. To start with, your marketing should be focused on getting a customer to keep buying from you. What can you do to ensure the new Christmas customers will come back in the New Year? One obvious thing is to record their names and emails or addresses. You may think you will be too busy, but you will be throwing away a golden opportunity if you don’t. Give them a reason to provide it to you such as a VIP card or special member offers. If you are not communicating with your past customers at least every 90 days you will lose all the rapport you’ve built with them to get the first sale. chunky monkey and chubby hubby with Linda Ireland
What I love about Australians is that we can laugh at ourselves. Recently, my husband and I noticed Ben and Jerry’s ice-cream popping up all over the place. Now if you haven’t tried it then you should, unless you have an addictive personality like me. Subsequently, my husband and I have hedged on the ‘heavier’ side of things − it was a cold winter and Ben and Jerry have two flavours of ice-cream which we’ve nicknamed each other. I’m ‘Chunky Monkey’ and he is ‘Chubby Hubby’. We were hysterically laughing at one another about our new pet names when we got onto the topic of how easy it is for me to remain fiercely focused and disciplined at work, with my investments and anything related to business. I would gladly sit there reading the Australian Financial Review before going outside for a run. It occurred to me that what

AMBER WERCHON BUSINESS PROMOTION
first impressions are lasting ... with Amber Werchon When we meet someone for the first time, we form an instant impression; an intuitive sense of who they are, and what they stand for. It may not always be accurate, but we form an opinion nevertheless. When we go for a job interview, we present ourselves neatly, attractively to create a positive impression to try and stand out from the other applicants, and demonstrate serious commitment to securing the job. Presenting your home for sale is no different. To achieve the best price and stand out from your competitors, ensure that the impression buyers get when they visit your home is positive. There are simple ways to create a warm, welcoming first impression when preparing your home for sale. •• De-clutter – potential buyers want to imagine themselves living in your home. De-cluttering makes your home feel more spacious and will enhance the overall presentation. •• Gardens – make sure the gardens are neat and tidy, weeding done, lawns mowed, cobwebs removed, paths cleaned etc. Before buyers step foot through the door they will be looking at your property’s street appeal, don’t let them keep on driving! •• Cleaning – get the outside of your home washed. Make sure the inside is sparkling also. Bathrooms spotless, toilet seats down, mould removed. Fresh linen on beds, clean towels in the bathroom, dining room tables polished, ceiling fans and skirting boards cleaned ... the more attention to detail, the more attractive the overall package appears. •• Minor Repairs – ensure cracked tiles, broken door handles, faulty light bulbs are replaced; all minor chores you’ve been meaning to do but haven’t got around to – now is the time! •• Freshen up your home – a coat of paint will liven up the dullest of rooms and create a light and airy ambience. Ensure you use neutral tones though rather than personal bold favourites – remember you are aiming at leaving, this is not about you or your personal tastes anymore. Fresh flowers, air fresheners, freshly brewed coffee ... all little touches that greatly enhance the homeliness of your property and therefore its appeal. •• Your home’s aspect – talk to your agent about the aspect of your home and arrange open homes around the most advantageous viewing time. •• The final tip is to be absent when inspections are conducted. This makes the buyers more relaxed and therefore more likely to give open and honest feedback, which can then assist you to work on any negatives prior to the next open home. These little pointers are common sense, but any agent will tell you they are the key to generating interest and moving quickly towards your ultimate aim ... to sell and move on. Good Luck! christmas information technology checklist with Miriam Torres Another year has passed and it is now time to ensure you have a few things in place for the Christmas and New Year period so you can have a happy and relaxed holiday season without any technology hiccups. Here is a checklist you can follow to ensure the technology you have in your organisation is ready and prepared during this time. Backups Check all backups of your server / computers / notebooks are effectively working to ensure no data is lost and that a copy of your business’s data is removed from the premises in case of theft and fire. Security Check all passwords to servers are not displayed, but rather kept somewhere safe to guarantee your information is protected and not accessed by others.
Remote access For those away on holiday or away from the office who still require a connection to the office for work, ensure your remote access back to the office is set up so access to the server is available and emails can be received. Should your mobile handset have functionality to connect and receive emails, ensure your trusted IT advisor sets this up for you so you are able to read, send and receive emails while away.
Ventilation of server equipment Check that air conditioning and air flow will still be delivered to the server during the Christmas period to minimise the risk of overheating.
Out of office message For those in a business environment who are utilising a business server, you will be able to set up an out of office message to notify people trying to contact you during the festive period of your office closure dates / holiday absence dates and alternative contact numbers. Please note that users without a server may still be able to set this up, although a computer must be left on and connected to the internet. Again, please refer to your trusted IT advisor.
Merry Christmas to you all and wishing you all a safe and happy holiday ...
Turn equipment off All equipment not utilised during the festive season (including computers, printers and monitors) should be turned off to reduce energy consumption and the risk of equipment failure.

divorce – helping your children cope with Leisa Toomey You know the relationship is over and now you have to tell the children. When is the right time? Should you both be there? How much do you tell them? These are some of the hard questions I get asked on a regular basis, often by understandably distressed parents. Well, help is at hand. A colleague of mine, Dr Bob Jacobs who is a trained psychologist, regularly conducts seminars for us at STO Lawyers and he has a wonderful insight into how parents can help their children through a time when their world appears to be crumbling around them. In this column I thought I would share some of Dr Bob’s thoughts from a recent seminar. 1. Do not expose children to conflict If there are problems on ‘change-overs’, figure out a better way to handle them. If phone calls inevitably lead to conflict, resolve not to talk when the children are around. 2. Prioritise your own emotional stability Take care of yourself. Your children will know if you are struggling and it makes them fearful and insecure. 70
profilemagazine
3. Maintain logistical stability Keep things as ‘normal’ as possible in the children’s routine. Any continuity in a child’s life is a real blessing for them at a time when their world is turning upside down. 4. Don’t say anything bad about the other parent This one is self-explanatory. 5. Tell the truth Children always need to trust their parents and this is never truer than when everyone is going through the trauma of separation. This doesn’t mean you should tell them everything, but it does mean that you should not tell them things that aren’t true. 6. Use the three-part response to difficult statements
3. If the child still wants to know WHY it was said, tell him you don’t know. 7. Do not ask questions about the other parent This puts a child in a very difficult position. If you need to know, ask your former partner when your child isn’t around, but never use your child as a source of information. 8. Celebrate and support the other parent as much as you can This isn’t easy, but it can be an amazing gift for your child. Remember your gift is for your child, not for your ex-partner. Schultz Toomey O’Brien Lawyers 5413 8900 www.stolaw.com.au
1. Ask the child how it made him / her feel (prioritise the child’s feeling, not your reaction). 2. Tell the child how much you love him / her.

AXA FINANCIAL BUSINESS PROMOTION
what do you think your life is worth?
new pool safety laws
with Tracey Ferguson
with Paul McHugh
Nearly all of our time is spent doing mundane tasks − sleeping, eating, showering, driving, exercising, chatting, shopping and working. Of the five or 10 percent of time spent outside the ‘ordinary’, half of that will be positive experiences; the other half potentially not. Crashing your car is a major inconvenience. Having your home burgled is no barrel of laughs. And having your passport and cash stolen while travelling overseas is a real drag. But, all of these are things you can recover from. Insurance will generally cover the financial cost, leaving you with just the annoying organisation of a replacement. However, there are things that can happen in life that are far worse than any of these. Take last year’s Victorian bushfires as an example. Thousands of homes disappeared. Hundreds of lives were lost. Tens of thousands of people had their lives changed forever. We saw heart-wrenching stories of people whose homes were incinerated, and tragic stories of death. And whilst the emotional loss was immediately obvious, the biggest devastation for many was only realised later – being the financial impact on the survivors of having lost a father, a mother, a husband or a wife. So we’re talking insurance, but not general insurance. This is the strange thing − we insure the least valuable stuff! Most cars are worth less than $20,000 but 89 percent are insured. Home contents are probably worth less than $50,000 but 87 percent are insured. Most houses could probably be rebuilt for less than $250,000 yet 77 percent are insured! What would be the financial cost of your partner dying or having a debilitating accident or illness? The cost of this could run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Lost earnings over a lifetime could total millions of dollars. A 35-year-old on an average salary of about $60,000 will earn about $1.8 million in today’s dollars by the time they’re 65. But not if they’re dead or can never work again! Most of life’s devastating events don’t make the papers. Mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, are killed or permanently disabled in accidents every day, or struck down prematurely by illnesses, such as cancers, heart attack and stroke. What’s your life worth? What is your good health worth? Or how much money are you going to earn between now and 65? Comminsure, the Commonwealth Bank’s insurance arm, quotes the following: •• 14 percent of people have life insurance. •• six percent have income protection insurance. •• 2.5 percent have trauma insurance. Yes, life insurance is a grudge purchase. It forces us to consider the thing we least want to think about − our own mortality. But life insurance does not have to cost an arm and a leg. The younger you are, the less the cover costs. You would probably be surprised at how cheap proper protection can be. How would your family cope financially if you or your partner weren’t alive tonight? THOMPSON MCNICHOL BUSINESS PROMOTION
The Queensland Government has introduced new pool safety laws aimed at further reducing the incidents of drowning and serious injuries of young children in swimming pools. The laws affect all properties in Queensland that have a private or shared pool. All properties with regulated pools need to be included in a state based pool safety register by May 2011. Initially local governments will include details of pools on the register however pool owners will need to check the register to ensure their pools are registered. All private pool owners must obtain a pool safety certificate by December 1 2015, unless their property is sold or leased within that time in which case the time periods are considerably shorter as detailed below. For shared pools such as in a unit complex, the owner of the pool (e.g. the Body Corporate) must obtain a pool safety certificate by the 30 November 2012, or by the 31 May 2011 for short term accommodation. Sale of premises From the 1 December 2010, a seller of premises with a pool must provide the buyer with either a pool safety certificate from a licensed pool safety inspector or a written notice that a pool safety certificate does not exist. Any buyer settling on a property on or after the 1 December 2010 where there is no pool safety certificate must ensure the pool complies with the pool safety standard and obtain a pool safety certificate within 90 days of settlement. For shared pools, where a pool safety certificate is not in effect, then the seller must give a written notice in the approved form to the owner of the shared pool, the Department of Infrastructure and Planning and the buyer before settlement. Lease of premises The owner of premises with a private pool must not lease the premises unless there is a pool safety certificate in effect. For shared pools, a copy of the pool safety certificate must be displayed at the main entrance of the complex or each gate or door giving access to the shared pool. Where a pool safety certificate is not in effect, then you must give a written notice in the approved form to the owner of the shared pool, the Department of Infrastructure and Planning and proposed tenant before the lease is entered into. Real Estate agents who lease properties with private pools where there is no pool safety certificate in effect may not charge commission or other reward for the performance of the Real Estate agents services. Failure to comply with the new laws is an offence with penalties of up to $16,500 for individuals and $82,500 for companies. For further information on new laws go to The Department of Infrastructure and Planning website www.dip.qld.gov.au/poolsafety. Wade Blackford heads up both the styling team at Strut Hair in Maroochydore and the training team for international hair stylist, Kevin Murphy. He has a long history on the Sunshine Coast in hair styling ... including a stint at the local strip club in the ‘80s (doing hair, that is ...).
I grew up in … Manilla, NSW.
When I was growing up I wanted to be … a rugby league player.
I start my day by … making a long black coffee with an extra shot.
My all time favourite movie is … Gangs of New York.
I would love to be better … at drawing.
I couldn’t live without … my cat.
When I am not working I am … not feeling like it’s work! I love what I do. I wish I could … stop the clock. The best meal I have had is at … La Boqueria, Barcelona. My favourite restaurant is … Cala Luna. My favourite holiday spot is … Barcelona. Most people don’t know that I … used to work on a farm baling hay and chipping burs.

I am at my happiest when … I’m on holidays with my beautiful girlfriend.

My greatest achievement is … still to come. My most annoying habit is … that I don’t think I have one. In five years I hope to be … livin’ it up. What makes me laugh out loud is … my friends. The one person I would most like to meet is … Steve Menzies. My hidden talent is … cooking. If I didn’t live on the Coast I’d live … smack bang in the middle of the city.
