WE’VE ALL SEEN THE DREAMY, ROMANTIC MOVIES WHERE GUY MEETS GIRL, GUY FALLS IN LOVE WITH GIRL, GUY MARRIES GIRL AND GUY AND GIRL LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER, RIGHT? BUT DOES LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT REALLY EXIST OR IS IT SIMPLY THE STUFF OF FAIRY TALES? BEING THE MONTH OF LOVE, I CAUGHT UP WITH A LIVELY BUNCH OF LADIES AND THE LOVELY LAURIE CLARKE, TO GET THEIR TAKE ON THIS AGE-OLD QUESTION, WITH SOME RATHER HILARIOUS RESULTS!
T
he moment I locked eyes with my (now) husband, I knew it was love at first sight … or was that lust at first sight? Whatever it was, there was a spark. I had never felt this way before, and after our very first date, I knew this was the man I was going to marry. Let me set the scene for you. Hailing from a typical Irish clan, my family was kicking up their heels at our annual Christmas shindig at my parent’s home. My mother, a professional singer, was belting out Nat King Cole’s Unforgettable and in walks a handsome young police officer, and just like that, I was smitten! Despite our fateful meeting being the result of a disgruntled neighbour complaining about the noise levels, the moment I laid eyes on this hunk in uniform, I knew something had shifted. While he and his partner declined my father’s invitation to join the party for a ‘wee whiskey’, we did exchange phone numbers that evening and after sharing our first romantic dinner date, we both knew we had found our soul mate in life. True story! I often joke that I managed to find The One without leaving the house! Fourteen years of marriage and three children later, we are more in love than the day we first met. So I guess you could say I am a true believer in love at first sight. But true love doesn’t always happen this way, as I discovered over a delicious lunch with my guests at The Piano Bar, Maroochydore recently. Co-hosting lunch was the charming Laurie Clarke, owner of Bank of Queensland, Maroochydore. Joining us was Carren Smith, motivational speaker and author, Rachael Witton, business development manager with SunnyKids, Natashya Manfield, co-owner of Miss Manfield boutique, Mooloolaba, photographer Tanya Chesterton Smith, Jacqui Weymes, documentary maker and wife of renowned big wave surfer Mark Visser and

Nicole McKosker, HR manager with a large national firm and marriage celebrant. profile: Do you believe in love at first sight? nicole: As a marriage celebrant, it always amuses me how many people I meet who say it was love at first sight because I don’t believe in love at first sight. I think there is lust at first sight, but not love. tanya: I do. I am a true romantic. I love any mushy movie where there is love at first sight. I am pretty sure I fell in love with my husband Brett at first sight, but I certainly didn’t say it or he might have run a mile! We have been together 20 years. I love the idea of people falling in love and staying in love. We met when I was 12 and got together when I was 19. I am still just as much in love with him as when we met. rachael: If you believe in love at first sight, it means it’s a visual thing, and if that is the case then yes, you can probably fall in love at first sight. I do the ‘two out of three’ check first … head, heart, gut. I like meeting people I find intriguing. It’s not a visual thing for me, that’s a long way down the list. To me, love at first sight harks back to when you are 14 and have never spoken to a boy, but you love him so much – even when his best mate tells you that you are dumped! nicole: My husband fell in love with me before even meeting me. We worked for the same company and used to talk a lot over the phone, but were in different states. The first time we actually met, he went to take my hand in the car and give me a goodbye kiss. I was really taken aback! But when my grandmother died and I had to give the eulogy and I didn’t know what to say, he told me what I needed to say, and even though I don’t remember what it was, it was his kindness and empathy that I do remember. It completely changed my perspective of him. We have been married for 14 years. carren: I have two views on it. From a psychology perspective, I am a big believer that the universe brings people together. I think love at first sight is possible. We subconsciously see a male or
female and assess if they are going to be a good mate. You can’t control that. I see a man with a really great chest and I am done for. For every relationship, whether it lasts or not, it always has a purpose, creating growth for both parties. I have been with my partner for 11 years, and I love him more today than the first day I met him. natashya: I have been with my partner since I was 17. He has been my only love so far. My dad actually thought I was a lesbian because I had never brought guys home or shown any interest in boys before him. We have been together seven years and during that time we have seen a lot of our friends meet, get engaged, get married and get divorced. Our closest friends are on their second marriage and they have a lot of wisdom for us. We just moved in together this year, so that has changed the dynamic and I am really enjoying it. I adore him. He is my best friend. laurie: I think I do believe in it. But I reckon people fight against it. When I look back on meeting my wife Deb, she was the obvious person for me. She is a super woman – stylish, classy, considerate to other people and a high achiever. But when we met, I was a million miles away from wanting to meet anyone. jacqui: For me, love at first sight is a pair of shoes or seeing my child for the first time. Mark is going to hate me for saying this, but it was more of an attraction at first sight for me. When I first saw him I thought, ‘Wow, you are buff, tanned, and attractive, and what about that smile!’, so it was probably more love at first smile! profile: What attracted you to your partner? carren: When I met my partner Matt, I thought he was a big spunk. He has a great chest and legs – that attraction and connection in the beginning is so much fun. laurie: When I met Deb, it was at a charity event and she was holding a huge $35,000 cheque under her arm, so she was hard not to notice. We had a dance that evening and there was a definite profilemagazine

attraction. It went from there, but it took a long time before it turned into anything. That was eight years ago. natashya: I remember when I met Cameron I said to my mum, ‘There is something different about him’. He made such an impression on me. I didn’t make any moves though because I thought he was seeing my friend! profile: How did you meet? jacqui: I was a flight attendant for Qantas and Mark was a passenger. We got chatting briefly and there was a definite attraction. The way he talked about his family was really attractive. We have been married since May. It’s a dream come true really. He later told me when he first saw me it was like I had a halo around my head, and he just knew he had to see me again. How sweet. profile: What is the secret to making it work? carren: I definitely think maturity plays a huge part. When I was younger I was more willing to let the relationship go if it wasn’t going my way. What keeps my relationship working is acceptance and giving each other room to be who we need to be without having limitations, expectations and boundaries. When I was younger, I had my relationship ideals based on the fairy tale and when they didn’t measure up I would give them the flick. Now I know it’s being able to give each other the room to be who we want to be and to allow each other to be free. natashya: I have been reading a lot lately about this in a book by French philosopher Esther Correl. She talks about taking responsibility for yourself and not relying on anyone for your happiness. If you do, you will flourish. laurie: I don’t reckon relationships are 50/50. They vary depending on the individual couple, so the key is be aware where that is. There is nothing wrong with 70/30 but you have to stick to your percentage. Both parties have to know where they stand. If it’s 80/20 then you are in trouble! Bring it back to the math I say. 12

jacqui: I am still learning. Before, if things weren’t going my way, I would cut and run. Now that I have found The One, I am not just thinking about myself but thinking about my husband, and always putting in the good stuff rather than just thinking what I can get out of it. It’s all about building and communicating. tanya: We just like each other’s company, so we get along well. We are really whole people separately. Brett gets up early and goes for a surf with our daughter and my son, and I have a sleep in. We still do our own thing. As you are together for many years, you get to know with one look what the other is thinking. rachael: I’m the only single one at the table so I am not sure if I am qualified. I have learned I don’t have to be someone other than me to be in a relationship, and if I do, I am in the wrong relationship. If you have to be someone else, the relationship runs out of puff and it’s too stressful. You need to accept yourself and love who you are before you can be with someone else. nicole: I think you need to accept people for who they are. My mum always says, ‘Love you, warts and all’. You have to love everything about your partner, the whole package. The thing I learned in 2013 is that it’s not going to be good all the time, and that is ok. It’s what you learn from that. You need to keep talking. If you do that and you are committed, it works out. The hearts and flowers and pink balloons are superficial. What you are left with is a deeper and stronger love. So there you have it. We all have our own love story to tell. Whether it’s love at first sight or a love that took time to ignite and flourish, the general consensus among the guests is unanimous – the important thing is not how we meet or if the love is instant, it’s about learning to accept the good and bad in each other, to give each other the freedom to be ourselves, to support and communicate with each other and most of all to continue to love each other.
We kicked off with a delicious shared antipasti, including a selection of marinated vegetables, cheeses, meats and breads. It was the perfect precursor to our tapas. What followed was plate after plate of tasty selections including breaded Spanish olives, fried until golden and filled with three cheeses and ground almonds – yum! We also enjoyed sourdough crumbed calamari with fresh lemon and aioli, grilled Cyprus haloumi cheese served with shaved zucchini and fennel salad, roasted and glazed beetroots with feta, yoghurt, cumin and fennel seeds, marinated octopus slow cooked then charred over coals and served rustic with lemon, and my favourite of the day, hand-made gnocchi with gorgonzola cream and fresh parsley – the best I have eaten. The friendly staff also didn’t hesitate to accommodate two of our guests who had special vegan and vegetarian dietary requirements, creating a special delicious eggplant dish that got the thumbs up from both ladies. Despite being more than full, we couldn’t resist just a taste of the delicious dessert menu. The baklava with pistachio ice cream was to die for! We also sampled a delicious traditional Greek dessert, Loukoumades – light and airy honey puffs, drizzled with honey syrup served with vanilla bean ice cream, divine. You can sample the delicious menu or pop in for a drink at the Piano Bar every day of the week until late. When the doors are open, the kitchen is open, serving meals from 12-noon lunchtime through to 11.30pm. Great food, great service, great atmosphere and live entertainment throughout the week – The Piano Bar Maroochydore ticks all the boxes! JULES MCKIE DOESN’T MAKE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS. INSTEAD, SHE BROUGHT ABOUT CHANGE BY SWAPPING THE OFFICE FOR THE OPEN ROAD. NOW SHE’S HELPING OTHERS FIND THEIR FREEDOM THROUGH HEALTHY FOOD AND HAPPY HOMES. PROFILE’S TONIA ZEMEK MEETS THE LADY THEY CALL THE FOOD FERRET.

’m no technical wizard but, like most of us, I do know how to reboot a computer. Activating that function can feel strangely empowering, right? If only it were that easy to give ourselves a fresh start. New Year’s resolutions go some way to initiating change but the real trick lies in making them stick. Jules McKie seems to have the knack. She’s fled the corporate jungle to get back to basics. Today Jules is focused on nurturing nature, herself and her family. Remarkably, that shift sees her standing taller than any of the stilettos that once lined her work wardrobe. Her transformation dates back to 2011 when she and her husband Geoff bought a caravan, packed up their two kids and headed off around Australia. “We didn’t have an agenda or a plan, we just decided to go wherever the wind blew,” Jules admits. “The feeling was absolutely liberating. I felt like I’d unleashed all these shackles.” So what were those ties that had her bound up for decades? To find the answer, we have to rewind the clock to a time when Jules was a single paralegal who worked hard and played even harder. She admits she established a string of unhealthy habits. “Sometimes I would find myself working 12 hours a day and then visiting

a drive-through to pick up dinner,” she says. “I drank every day of the week; I couldn’t wait to get home from work to drink a bottle of wine,” she says. Eventually Jules began taking small steps to change her lifestyle, which eventually led her to take up competing in triathlons. Then when she married Geoff, together they channelled their energies into building a business empire. At one stage they were juggling multiple ventures – everything from e-marketing to orthodontics, and even matchmaking! Somehow they also found time to build an award-winning eco-friendly house near Maleny. Rather ironically, they had a sustainable home but could no longer sustain their lifestyle. “Everything looked rosy from the outside, but from the inside, it was falling apart,” Jules says. “We were very good at keeping up appearances.” In reality, the pair was stretched to breaking point. “While living a corporate life provided us with financial independence, it was also suffocating us.” During that time Jules experienced bouts of depression, meanwhile Geoff felt like his world was imploding. It took a temporary separation to find a solution. “Now I describe that time as the greatest blessing ever given to us,” Jules profilemag.com.au
I think it’s about slowly implementing change because when you try and do everything at once it’s too hard.” says. “It was such a gift because we had to look at what was important. What were we chasing? If the world ended tomorrow we couldn’t take all of these material things with us. We had to start focusing inwardly on what was important to us.” Cue the caravan and the 15-month road trip around Australia. “We realised that without our family together, nothing was important. It was a great lesson.” As well as consolidating her relationship with her husband and children, the trip was also the tipping point for another exciting development. During their journey, the family set up camp on farms and helped to work the land to pay their way. On one occasion, when Jules was on the hunt for fresh tomatoes for a home-made chutney, Geoff nicknamed her the Food Ferret. Now that moniker has turned into an entire philosophy that’s spawned a website as well as raw food workshops. “If you’re eating whole food, in its natural state, taken from the ground and put on your plate with as little manipulation and processing as possible – then you’re doing great things for yourself and farmers in the wider community.” After having battled a string of food allergies, including wheat and dairy intolerances, Jules is now happier and healthier than ever. She kicks off her days with yoga and from there the rest of her waking hours are fuelled with the nutrients she needs to see her through till sundown. It’s a way of life that seems quite disciplined from the outside but Jules cuts through the complications with the ease of someone who’s transitioned from excuses to action. She’s also trained as a holistic health coach. “In our society, we’re taught to look at the really big picture, but I personally found that too daunting,” Jules explains. “I think it’s about slowly implementing change because when you try and do everything at once, it’s too hard.” Jules gives me the example of simply swapping my morning cereal for one of her green smoothies. If I can’t quite make that leap in my own kitchen, I can always pop down to the Noosa Farmers Market to buy one. Jules’s new venture, Raw ‘n’ Uncensored, has set up shop at the markets with a bike-powered blender to whip up fresh seasonal smoothies using pedal power. It’s the beginning of another cycle of change for Jules (literally!) as her business diversifies into manufacturing raw sweets and savouries. Already it looks like 2014 is all set to serve up a feast of new adventure. I wish her continued success with her health, home and heart. Happy New Year Jules!

VALENTINE’S DAY IS KNOWN AROUND THE WORLD AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CELEBRATE LOVE. WHETHER YOU’RE AN OLD-FASHIONED ROMANTIC, HAVE A SECRET CRUSH OR WANT TO HIDE IN A CORNER AND FORGET ABOUT IT, YOU AND YOUR WALLET CAN’T HIDE AWAY FROM FEBRUARY 14!
n Year Seven, a boy gave me a bag of heart-shaped lollies inscribed with the words, ‘Kiss Me’, ‘Be Mine’ and ‘Luv You’ for Valentine’s Day. Of course I didn’t want to eat them, even though the little pastel-coloured candies begged to be gobbled up. Instead, I kept them hanging in my locker for the next month, each day reminding the 13-year-old me of the simple romantic gesture that I was sure would continue for the rest of my life ... I found out months later that the boy had stolen the lollies from his mother’s old handbag and they were probably five years old and stale. Needless to say, my Disney fairytale heart was broken. But still, it’s the thought that counts, right? These days the spirit of Saint Valentine’s Day is somewhat more extravagant, with less tugging of the romantic heartstrings and more pulling on the purse strings – and in a big way. An IBISWorld Report has found that Australians splurge more than $900 million on their significant others on Valentine’s Day, with everything from weekend getaways, intimate dinners and of course jewellery included. Hello diamonds! It is sad to think these days that Valentine’s Day, in my mind anyway, is a mere pale pink shadow

of its former self. Once associated with throbbing red passion and romance, today it’s more likely to elicit a sense of obligation, money and debt. I almost choked on my coffee when I read that Chris Brown had spent $65,000 on diamond-encrusted earrings for Rihanna last Valentine’s Day, all to prove his love for her after their split … and we all how well that turned out. You just have to walk through the supermarket confectionery aisle to see it, with the pink and red heart-shaped posters hanging from the aisles, encouraging shoppers to fill their basket with boxes of chocolates and all sorts of ‘cheesy’ goodies. And don’t forget the radio and TV commercials. Sheer genius is at play here. They can suck you into buying anything … even an electric shaver for the sake of a good Valentine’s Day kiss. So how did we end up spending so much on love? I blame social media. Even a Valentine’s Day grinch has to admit their life is constantly consumed by it, surrounded by emoticons and hugs and thumbs-up ‘likes’. We even sign our emails with a kiss (x), which is personally becoming a problem when you accidently whip it on the end of a message to a client, suddenly changing the tone of an otherwise professional email. We post pictures of our flowers, hash-tagging absurd made-up words like #biggestbunchofflowersever and #myhusbandisthebestest, just so we can gauge a response from our friends – #luckyyoualligotwasahug. So, how do we get over the pressure of Valentine’s Day with money still in our bank accounts? It is simple. Bring back the heart-shaped candies and homemade cards. They may not say ‘I love you’ in a big way, but it’s the little things that count! How will you spend your Valentine’s Day?

he words ‘high tea’ conjure up images of tiered plates of delicate cup cakes, petite sandwiches filled with delectable fillings and other delicious sweet treats, accompanied with cups of high quality tea served in fine bone china. Although a fairly recent Australian trend, high tea dates back to early 19th Century England. Dinner was served at around 9pm, so the upper class would while away the afternoon by indulging in sweet and savoury treats accompanied by cups of tea shared with friends. The perfect girls-only affair, a sophisticated high tea has become a popular alternative to a traditional hen’s night for brides-to-be. There are lots of great ideas to make the event one to remember. Why not add a few fun games, treats and perhaps a nice small gift for each guest to take home. Many restaurants now offer high tea, but you can create the perfect high tea at home.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO CREATE A TRULY DECADENT AFFAIR:
Good tea A high quality loose leaf tea is best, and a freshly opened packed will give a fabulous aroma.
Fine bone china
Serve tea in good teacups. Mismatched plates, cups and saucers look great. You can often pick these up at your local op shop for a fraction of the price of new, and they often look better with a little character.
Cake plates
You will need lots of pretty little plates. It’s a good idea to have a fresh plate to offer your guests.
Sandwich art
Use only the very best quality ingredients. Cut crusts off sandwiches and serve in elegant bite-size servings.
Serving ware
A tiered cake stand and silver cake servers, cake tongs and cake forks are a must. Don’t forget to add some fresh flowers to the table and some pretty napkins.
Little extras... A tall glass of Pimms will add a touch of glamour to your high tea, and some classical music will create that special ambiance

WHEN SOULA BURST ONTO THE SUNSHINE COAST MUSIC SCENE IN LATE 2011, THE INDUSTRY DIDN’T KNOW WHAT HAD HIT IT. TWO YEARS ON, AND ANNA RAWLINGS SITS DOWN WITH THREE OF THE BAND’S FIVE MEMBERS, TEILA PACKMAN, KANE FILER AND LEWIS ELLIOT, TO FIND OUT HOW THEY HAVE PERFECTED THE ART OF LIVE MUSIC.
C
omprised of lead vocalist Teila Packman, 20, bass guitarist/ vocals Lewis Elliot, 21, saxophonist/guitarist/vocals Kane Filer, 20, drummer Nathan Campbell, 22 and guitarist Danny Lowrie, 23, Soula’s sound is unique. Think full-energy covers of the likes of The John Butler Trio, and original works oozing their trademark mix of soulful yet edgy vocals, harnessing seductively smooth saxophone melodies, flawless guitar riffs, catchy drumbeats, and passionate lyrics – the performances of Soula hit all the right notes. With the band mates being previous high school acquaintances, coming together felt natural. However, it wasn’t until a band that Lewis had been in disbanded a short time before they were due to play at a community festival,

that Nathan and Kane along with Teila, came to the rescue. “Everyone always calls it a series of happy accidents,” Lewis laughs. “We basically pulled together at the last minute and ended up playing a really good gig.” They were all surprised at how well they played together, and began to practice a few covers. “We started playing a few gigs, and suddenly started to get noticed,” says Kane. Six months into gigging at local bars, clubs and events, an agent approached Soula asking if they wanted representation. “None of us had started this thinking we could make a career out of it,” profilemag.com.au
shares Teila. “We suddenly found we were spending most of our practice time answering emails, so we took our agent on board to assist, although our agent has grown us further now and created even more work!” she laughs. Soula was quickly noticed by both their audience and industry peers alike, drawing huge crowds to their gigs and appearing in lineups both locally and interstate. “We never expected the size of the audiences we would attract,” smiles Kane. Soula quickly scooped coveted residencies at Noosa Surf Club, The Hi-Fi Bar, Surfair Marcoola and popular local music platform venue Solbar to name a few. These gigs were soon followed by a support act to Donovan Frankenreiter and appearances at Caloundra Music Festival and the Big Pineapple Festival, winning the Emergenza Queensland State final in Brisbane in December 2012, before being awarded sixth in the Australian finals in Sydney out of a competition total of 300 bands. Momentum was growing, and the band was along for the ride. But with all rollercoasters, where there are ups, there are downs. In 2012, Soula experienced a shock exit from one of the band members, culminating in hasty auditions for a replacement. After another departure created a setback in early 2013, the original member re-joined the band, allowing Soula to achieve their harmonious balance once again. “We are a mix of different sounds, and we found this particular genre was the perfect compromise for all of them,” says Teila, acknowledging their music has evolved in their quest to find their groove.
We basically pulled together at the last minute and ended up playing a really good gig.” “We all lead different lifestyles, but work well together. There are creative differences, but we understand how each other works,” says Teila. So, with a self-titled EP single on Triple J Unearthed and a single on iTunes, what will we hear next from Soula? “We are between two phases at the moment, and really taking this experience and the band to the next level and expanding our audience,” says Teila. “Our film clip has just been released, so we are very excited and proud about that.” “Everyone is still juggling work or university along with the band,” says Lewis. “I think we all want to be able to say ‘I’m a musician,’ when someone asks what we do,” adds Kane. The band has Melbourne set in its sights next, and is focused on making industry connections there. But however far Soula goes, it won’t forget where it came from. “The music industry on the Coast is really supportive. There is opportunity for good networking and support,” praises Lewis of the music scene here. With anywhere between five to eight gigs a month in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Byron and Sunshine Coast, I have to wonder how they keep their trademark energy levels so high at every performance. “We have a reputation as energiser bunnies – hardworking, fun, energetic and young!” laughs Teila. “We love playing for big audiences, and meeting all kinds of people,” adds Lewis. “Sometimes after we play a festival, we will join the crowd and watch the other bands. We have some of our best memories playing in front of friends.” “It’s the joy of writing a song, and then watching as people listen and give their own meaning to it,” Kane finishes. “But, it’s also about doing it for yourself. I can’t imagine doing anything else,” adds Teila. Soula have big things in sight for 2014 and beyond, and with their distinctive sounds, energetic performances and extraordinary talent, there is no doubt they are set to soar across the charts. Just remember – you saw it here first!

JUDY COPLEY IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST BRIDAL DESIGNERS THIS SIDE OF NSW. WITH AN INNATE TALENT FOR HIGH-END TASTE AND STYLE, AND A GIFT FOR DESIGN THAT WAS PASSED DOWN BY HER MOTHER VIA THE FASHION HOUSES OF MELBOURNE, JUDY IS EVERY BRIDE’S DREAM COME TRUE.
T
hink vintage lace, luxe satins, fine silks, luminescent pearls and fluffy tulle like you have never seen before (except maybe on a Sex and the City movie). Judy Copley is one exquisitely talented bridal designer, a skill you would expect to have been honed and improved upon for years to get to this level. But you would be mistaken, for although Judy could compete with Australia’s greatest designers in her field, this calling has only been realised in the last five years now her children are grown, with Judy for the first time able to follow her own dreams. Yep, at the age of 55, Judy has become a highly respected name on the designer wedding scene, and it just goes to show, it is never too late to follow your heart. Born in Adelaide, Judy moved to Darwin when she was seven, waving goodbye to the notion of ‘civilised living’ in doing so, embracing a rugged outdoors lifestyle in the process. “I was one of seven kids,” smiles Judy. “I have beautiful happy memories of family life. Moving from South Australia to the Northern Territory was a big change – it was a very different environment and it took some getting used to. However, when I did, I came to adore the relaxed outdoor aussie lifestyle and spent my time dreaming of being a ballerina.” With both parents adopted, Judy’s family started from scratch in many ways, enjoying a great deal of adventure along the way. A feisty bunch, with her father, a hard-working man in the true traditional sense of the word, Judy enjoyed a charmed and innocent upbringing, including trips away and adventures galore such as a holiday to Timor when she was 13 on a plane so tiny it could only fit her family. Such a sense of exploration continued to grow inside of Judy, a trait no

doubt inherited from her risk-taking dad, and at 18, her love of travel reared its head again when she purchased a kombi van with a girlfriend and drove around Australia – a hugely pioneering move at the time, and one which Judy, now as a mother, baulks at. “We were so naïve and such dreamers. We didn’t even know what milk was, having been raised on the powdered variety as a result of Darwin’s distant geography from the rest of the East Coast. It used to take two weeks to even get produce there so we could eat. “So to set off on our own across Australia, just two young girls, was a big thing. When we got to Queensland and we saw the Sunshine Coast, we could not believe it. It was magnificent. It was amazing. We also couldn’t believe the fruit trees! We continued down the East Coast to the Barossa Valley and round to the West Coast, through Broome and then back up to Darwin. Life was never the same after that. My eyes had been well and truly opened.” Always a creative child, Judy was never happier than when she had a bowl of sequins and a stack of crepe paper in her lap, the telltale signs of a budding designer right there. And her talent didn’t end with making and doing, for Judy also loved to dance and in fact went on to become an accomplished classical ballet dancer which she studied and then taught for 18 years. It is little wonder that such grace and style have made it into her design aesthetic, with a natural preference for unstructured flowing gowns which move and present the body in the most effortless manner. After marrying her sweetheart and moving to Queensland, Judy’s dreams of her own large family came true as she went on to have four children (two boys and two girls), now adults in their own right with their own families, an immense support for Judy in her venture of fulfilment. “My young family became my life. As a full-time mum, I devoted myself

to raising them and I wouldn’t have it any other way. They are the best kids ever, as are my two stepchildren. I couldn’t be doing what I am doing now without their encouragement. “In fact, my first foray into designing came five years ago when my daughter, who owned a gallery in Noosa at the time, exhibited a gown I had made, which immediately sold, with further couture enquiries following. From there, I started to make people bespoke outfits, and eventually Judy Copley Couture was formed, later becoming Judy Copley Bridal, exclusively specialising in vintage inspired bridal gowns.” Having learnt all her design and sewing skills from her mother, herself a skilled seamstress back in the day, Judy always had a love of fashion and style. “Mum worked for a high fashion label in Melbourne in 1935 as a seamstress. She taught me everything. Gosh, I remember her gowns, her panache. She was beautiful and knew just how to dress. Such care and attention given to every detail. I have certainly inherited her eye for perfection. “When I had a young family, however, there was no time for ‘me’. I was on my own for a long time with the kids with my own dreams on hold. I lived for them. I put them first. I believed my time would come. And it did.

Your time will come, and when it does, it’s wondrous.”
“It hasn’t been until recently that I have been able to follow my passions. After my business started, I enrolled on a course at a commercial arts training college in Sydney, but then the orders started coming in thick and fast and I found I didn’t have time to study. It appeared I did not need the qualification after all. “Everything I have learnt has been a journey, and I want to keep learning. That is what life is about. Now, my joy comes from my job. I love it so much, I would do it every second if I could. Seeing the finished gown – something I have made from scratch – and also the bride’s face when she puts it on, is the best feeling in the world.” february 2014
A woman who has encountered many bumps in the road of life, none of which she is keen to divulge, a positive person with a glass half full attitude, Judy’s success could not happen to a nicer person. At a time when life appeared to be slowing down, with her children grown and a comfortable routine kicking in, Judy is proof to us all that there’s nothing wrong with shaking things up a bit. Rocking the foundations. Biting off more than you can chew. You just never know where it will lead you. Age is a number. Opportunity can come knocking at any time. Just be willing to open the door. “My goal for the future is to keep doing what I am doing. I want to keep working. I want to keep designing and collaborating with these incredible girls who come to me to create the masterpiece of their dreams. “I love to connect with my clients, and to really get a sense of who they are. This helps very much when I am designing their dresses. It is almost like I tune in to them. And they are all so different and wonderful. I have never dealt with a bridezilla and have never had a bride unhappy with her dress. I honestly care about pleasing my clients and I love the relationships I end up forming. so it is ideal for me. I am all about making people happy. “My next step would be to create a limited edition range which would only involve a few pieces. I would like to take on a few assistants to help with such a collection. I would also still continue to do couture.” Judy is certainly one of the loveliest ladies you will ever encounter in the wedding industry. Shy, quiet, excruciatingly humble (I literally had to tease the information about her success out of her during our chat, such was her discomfort in talking about herself), talented, dedicated and a pleasure to deal with, Judy is the ultimate hextuple threat. Delighting in the fact that each and every wedding dress she makes is a one-off gown that wouldn’t look out of place in a New York high society wedding, Judy is without doubt the Caloundra equivalent of Vera Wang. Just forget the exorbitant price tag. “My advice to everyone is that there is time to discover your talent. Be true to yourself. Be determined. Embrace your inner calling. It’s never too late. Your time will come, and when it does, it’s wondrous.” 26

idden in a narrow alleyway, away from the street and bustling thoroughfare, is a garden where chilli trees thrive, herbs grow like wild grass and tomato plants bounce off the sidewalk. This little gem, planted and tended by the cafe workers, is just one of the many treasures to be found in the Sunshine Coast’s fastest growing town, Buderim. Built on top of a mountain in rich volcanic soil and some 200 metres above sea level, the village overlooks the entire Sunshine Coast, from the beaches at Caloundra to Noosa, and inland to the Glasshouse Mountains. Home to more 30,000 people and growing, this urban hub is fast becoming known for its entrepreneurs, small businesses and its thriving coffee scene, with new cafes popping up on both sides of busy Burnett Street every month. There are now more than 13 coffee shops in Buderim, some flaunting a taste of France such as at My Private Provence, others toasting a more eclectic scene, such as at Ground. Despite the influx of new business, there are some who have stood the test of time, including Books on Buderim, which opened its doors in the 60s. This rare and timeless store is filled to the roof with reads for the whole family, with a speciality children’s section and knowledgeable staff keen to share their favourite novels. Jo Chandler has owned the bookstore for the past 15 years, and says it’s an icon of the town.

Beautiful BUDERIM “It is a local bookstore filled with local customers,” Jo smiles. “Books on Buderim has been around since the town was just a few stores at the start of King Street. We have moved three times as the town has grown and grown.” Another hidden gem of Buderim, and something completely out of context for this urban town, is the spectacular Buderim Forest Park and Waterfall. This is a 45-hectare secluded oasis hidden on the northern side of Buderim, less than a kilometre from Buderim Village. A world of tall trees, ferns, trickling waterfalls and sweet birdcalls, it feels like you are in the wilderness. There are two walking trails – from the lower entry off Lindsay Road from Harry’s Lane, and from Quorn Close.
• Buderim got its name from the Aboriginal word badderam for the Hairpin Honeysuckle, a type of Banksia, which grew on the lower slopes of the mountain. •
Pioneer Cottage was built using pit-sawn cedar and beech around 1880 by J.K. Burnett, a local and original resident of Buderim. The main street through Buderim Village was named in honour of the family.
• The Buderim-Palmwoods Tram was constructed between 1911-1914 to transport farm produce and passengers.

If you THINK you can’t reach your goals ... THINK again... WEALTH THROUGH PROPERTY WITH THINK MONEY
If you think you can’t reach your goals , think again Setting goals is often the easy part, most of us do that every January. The difficult part is having the focus to follow those goals through and actually achieve them. It doesn’t have to be hard, often the most common cause of not achieving the results you are after is lack of systems and organisation.

Chris specialises in teaching: • Fast Debt Reduction – Reduce your debt, not your lifestyle • Goal Mapping – how to get focus on what you want • Why Property – Learn the strategies, structures and solutions of investing • How to get 10 properties in 10 years and how to manage the holding costs.

Debt Reduction: I often see clients who have seemingly uncontrollable debt, credit cards maxed out, car loans, mortgage payments, overdue bills and stress through the roof. I have seen these same clients leave my office after an hour or two with a new lease on life and a strategy in hand to solve all these problems. No, I don’t have a magic wand but it is amazing what a difference setting up a cash management system can make. Achieving fast debt reduction can often be as simple as getting organised and learning the tricks to beating the banks at their own game. Wealth creation: This is simple. The difference in separating your personal life from your investments can be amazing for wealth creation! I know from experience that having to think about the cost of investment properties coming from your personal income can make it impossible to relax and enjoy life. The correct financial platform can literally change your life, forever. Once I separated the cost of investing from my income, and made the property portfolio stand on its own, I literally got my life back. My lifestyle improved and so did my investment portfolio. So many people set their goals to achieve wealth through property, and fail to achieve it because the financial stress is too great. After a year or two they sell out and they are back to square one. life: Money isn’t everything, there are life goals too, such as being the best parent, partner and friend. You want to take those trips, buy that new car, find that perfect job or partner. So, by setting and achieving goals, all it takes is a little bit of focus and a lot of determination. Goal Mapping, Debt Reduction and Wealth through Property are just three of the key elements of the Think Money program. Everyone is different, we all start at a different spot financially, have different timelines and goals. Think Money looks at where you are starting from, what you want to achieve and creates an individual strategy to help you get there. We take a great deal of pride and pleasure from the amazing successes our clients achieve in not only reaching their goals, but exceeding them. Call today to make a time for a chat with Chris, Lynn and Yaseen and see what a difference Think Money could make to your life.
Look forward to seeing you soon Chris Childs

We felt like we were working really really hard and really not getting anywhere. We came to Think Money, sat down with Chris and I just felt like a world of weight had been lifted off my shoulders. With just a few little tweaks to our cash management we’ve managed to have everything fall into place. Our lifestyle has actually improved, it hasn’t gone backwards. We are still on the same income but our debt reduction, its just been amazing. You can see it on paper in just a couple of months. Our stress level is a lot lower now. Then she set out a strategy and told us what we needed to do…. And then helped us do it! Thanks to Think Money we have just about bought property number seven. We are on track big time! Now we have freedom financially and because of the way Chris teaches us to set up our finances, it is easy! And perhaps the biggest change in Kathy’s life came a few months ago.
After years of being chased for money and too scared to call the banks, Kathy received a phone call from the branch manager at the local bank. They just called to see how I was and told us we were very valued customers. Was there anything else they could do for us? It’s such a great feeling. Now, I’m in control. I must say I agree with Chris… if you THINK you can’t… THINK again.

aDvice The one thing I always mention is, be careful who you take advice from. And it isn’t just the bad guys you have to worry about. FRienDs anD FaMily: I see more damage done by family and friends in their effort to ‘protect you’ from making mistakes. They care, but often have only heard horror stories and don’t want to see you make similar mistakes. banks: Many people go to their bank to find out how to set up their loans, and what they should borrow etc. Unfortunately, it is like asking the mouse where to put the cheese isn’t it. The banks make huge profits by making sure they teach their employees to advise their clients how to do their banking to suit them, to maintain the highest levels of debt for the longest period of time. Think about the person who is behind the counter giving
you advice on how to make money. Consider what he or she earns and owns, and then decide if they are qualified to tell you how to become wealthy. Financial PlanneRs: Now I tread carefully … I was a financial planner for 10 years 1990 – 2000. I was considered a very successful planner, and specialised in retirement planning, so I am not saying this without knowledge and experience. Financial planners are restricted on what they can advise on, and most are unable to give any advice on property. All I will say is during that time I didn’t meet many financial planners who were wealthy…. I will leave it at that. accountants: Still treading carefully! There are great accountants out there that give great tax advice! But there are also many who really are just bean counters. It isn’t really the industry for excitement and entrepreneurs. So, before you take property advice from an
accountant – other than how to maximize your deductions – ask them how many investment properties they have. If it isn’t many or worse none, be careful about taking property investment advice from them. So before taking advice from anyone, look at who they are and what they have, and if that is where you want to be – take their advice. If they don’t own an investment property – can they advise you on it? If they aren’t wealthy, can they tell you how to be? If you want to know how to become wealthy, or how to build a property portfolio, find someone who has done it and ask their advice, they obviously know how to do it.

“The discipline of writing something down is the first step to making it happen”
lee iacocca
meet lynn levitt Prior to becoming the education and training manager for Think Money, Lynn herself was one of our clients. Within a few short months Lynn was reaching her goals of securing her financial future by implementing the strategies that she was coached by Chris Childs and Yaseen Hull (Debt reduction specialist). The process of being able to work out what you want and when you want is not something that comes easily to most people. Through a series of techniques and mostly easy to understand information that is science-based, Lynn couples this with a fun process of writing and drawing your thoughts and ideas to assist you in reaching your desired goals. For Think Money clients the Goal Mapping assists them in achieving the strategy that Chris or Yaseen puts in to place for them. The interesting thing is it is never about the money or the property they are just the tools we use to get what we want, which is often things like freedom, a new business, financial security.
Lynn has successfully delivered Goal Mapping to over 500 people with amazing results. The secret is to take action and follow the steps. What is the point of learning something new and not implementing it? That’s just not something that works with Lynn, she makes you follow through and produce the evidence that you have done so. As a Think Money client you will receive exclusive access to Brian Maynes’s internationally recognised Goal Mapping Program. this includes: • a full 1 Day Goal Mapping Workshop where you will learn the technique, set new goals and begin the journey towards achieving them. At this workshop you will receive a Goal Mapping Workbook with a CD and your own copy of Brian Mayne’s Goal Mapping book. • access to our regular Goal Mapping forums at Think Money House to keep you on track to achieve your goals. • a one-on-one meeting with Lynn to set action plans in place to achieve your wealth. The one day workshop that Lynn provides will leave you feeling you can most definitely achieve any goal you set for yourself. One of the other most important factors is often we don’t know what we want.
The reason for this is we are always talking about what we don’t want to happen, instead of playing in the land of what is possible. Lynn’s 1 day course will ensure you leave the day with a clear set of goals and quite often not ones that you had believed you wanted!! Setting goals is really very simple it’s just that we are not used to always thinking about what we would like in our lives. It’s a practice that needs to be learned. You need to spend 10 minutes a day thinking about the way you would like your life to be, who you would like in your life, where you would like to work, holidays, as many things as possible that can help you picture your ideal life. It’s the pictures and the feelings that come from our right brain that makes us feel good. Once we put them to paper we can set a ‘to do’ plan and take action and let the left brain assist in moving us closer to our goals. Setting goals around finance and property is so easy and achievable. You just have to have the right tools and mentor. Many of our Think Money clients have used the Goal Mapping to set many other goals in their lives like starting new businesses, going on holidays, spending more time with the family. We have amazing success stories because the fact of the matter is, it never is about the money, it is and always will be about your mindset. What are you doing today to create a strong healthy mindset?

ardening. It’s a simple, yet therapeutic hobby. It may also be the reason Michael Ord is a business success story. The Core Motion director’s typical Australian persona finds its roots in being a fifth generation (maroon) Queenslander. Consequently, Michael grew up with a love of the bush, fishing and of classic Aussie culture, and proudly admits a stint working at Kakadu National Park. It was a whirlwind trip backpacking around the world which opened his eyes however, and helped shaped his business today. A wicked personality with an infectious laugh and an intelligent mind to boot, Michael Ord is the mate you want to get to know.
MILESTONES Life changing milestone 1: A stint at Kakadu National Park. In 1997, I moved to the remote and spectacular Kakadu National Park because I wanted to see more of Australia outside the big cities, learn more about our country and experience life in the bush. Those four years were mad, but they were some of the best of my life. The national park is stunning and I learned and grew as a person every day. It changed my view of the world and made me realise what an amazing place we live in and how lucky we are. Life changing milestone 2: Completed university and travelled the world. In 1991, I finished my Bachelor of Business degree at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, but realised I actually wanted to see the world before pursuing my career. I travelled for about nine months through New Caledonia, the United States, Europe and Africa, before I ran out of money and had to move home to finally start working. This time in my life was a challenge because I did things I never thought I would ever do, such as teaching water sports in Los Angeles, meeting some really amazing and interesting people and seeing some incredible landmarks. 44

Life changing milestone 3: Married my wife, Jenny. In 2003, I married the love of my life, Jenny Andrews. She is my inspiration – a former student and dancer at the Australian Ballet Academy, principal of dance at the Australian Opera and an agent for celebrities. We married in Melbourne. Marriage has given me a sense of stability and I suppose a greater sense of responsibility.
This time in my life was a challenge because I did things I never thought I would ever do ...” Life changing milestone 4: Started my own business. In 2009, I walked away from the corporate world to establish a business in the middle of the global financial crisis. It really was risking it all for one’s independence, and although it has paid off for me, there were moments where I nearly threw in the towel. Before I left, I was working in financial planning for a major bank. There was no care factor by the bank to the way it was run, and I wanted to know who my clients were instead of just dealing with people over the phone. I realised there was a real need for those working in the mines and transport industries to have access to a better service. Core Motion works a lot with people in regional Queensland and so I am doing a great deal of driving, but it is the face-to-face value that we offer that really counts. Life changing milestone 5: Trying to help others succeed. After travelling through Cambodia in 2013, I embarked on a project to see if I could improve the lives of some of the local residents via micro lending. The concept is to help farmers and small business people who cannot afford the country’s high interest rates when needing to borrow money. We are hoping to change that and help them get their ventures off the ground. profilemag.com.au

BUSINESS PROMOTION
ENDOMETRIOSIS IS A CONDITION THAT affects at least 10 per cent of the female population. The endometrium is the lining of the uterus, which builds up during the cycle and sheds at period time. Endometriosis occurs when a small amount of that lining, ends up growing on the inside skin (or peritoneum) of the abdomen, usually in the pelvis and causes an inflammatory reaction including pain. Endometriosis is often associated with many other symptoms including painful sexual intercourse, heavy periods, clots, flooding, bowel pain and time off school or work. If left untreated it may contribute to not only ongoing suffering but infertility. The only way to diagnose the condition of endometriosis is for a specialist gynaecologist (or sometimes a surgeon) to insert a laparoscope (a surgical telescope) into the abdominal cavity under a brief general anaesthetic. Once the small lesions are diagnosed they can be excised. This is done by stripping the abnormal skin (peritoneum) away. That skin then regrows. If you are a mother of a teenage daughter who needs to take time off school at period time, or has symptoms associated with the bowel, urine or heavy periods including abdominal bloating, diarrhoea but especially any severe pain, then you should ask for a referral to a specialist gynaecologist who has an interest in endometriosis. I am presently conducting a study sponsored by the WESLEY RESEARCH INSTITUTE in collaboration with a professor from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. We are asking endometriosis sufferers to allow us to use some of the tissue that is excised from the pelvis at the time of laparoscopy to enable us to pinpoint the areas on at least six genes (that are already known about) that carry the markers for endometriosis. It is hoped that in the future, drugs will be developed that could switch off these genes. Similarly, if you are a young woman who has either suffered period pain or have had to take time off work at period time, you are having pain with intercourse or trouble getting pregnant, then you should ask for a referral to see a gynaecologist who has a special interest in endometriosis.
The condition of ADENOMYOSIS is a similar condition to endometriosis where the endometrium grows into the muscle of the uterus. The shape of the uterus will have a subtle bumpy appearance and may or may not be associated with other endometriosis in the pelvis as well. Previously, I think many cases of adenomyosis were missed because gynaecologists, including myself, were just looking for endometriosis in younger women. With the improvement in the quality of laparoscopes, the improvement in the quality of the light source and the improvement of the quality of the image we see on our screens at the time of laparoscopy, we are able to see a lot more. It is important to diagnose adenomyosis early because it is a potential cause of infertility. If we can arrest the development of adenomyosis in young women we will help not only to improve their symptoms of pain, bleeding and quality of life, but also help prevent the need for them to have as many IVF treatment cycles. At MRI scan, the uterus is not always enlarged as it was classically thought but the uterus must have a definite amount of endometrium (the lining of the womb) invading the myometrium (the muscle of the womb). In severe cases the lining of the womb may grow right through the whole muscle of the uterus. When this happens, inflammation and pain are more severe. Usually these cases also have associated endometriosis with them, and these women are more likely to have problems conceiving. Dr Graham Tronc is a specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. He trained in Queensland and the UK and has a special interest in endometriosis and adenomyosis and is a member of the City Fertility IVF Clinic. Dr Tronc set up the Brisbane Endometriosis Clinic in 2000 and is the Queensland member of the Australia wide group of doctors called ECCA (Endometriosis Care Centre of Australia). Dr Tronc has an affiliation with the Endometriosis Association of Queensland (QENDO). Further information on endometriosis may be found by visiting the QENDO website www.qendo.org.au and you may email them on info@qendo.org.au. You can now follow our practice on Facebook. Invisalign is the latest modern approach to straightening teeth, using a series of virtually invisible and removable custom-made aligners designed individually for you. Invisalign uses 3-D computer imaging technology to map your complete teeth movement from start to finish. We are able to show you the series of movements your teeth will go through over the course of the treatment. Treatment time and number of aligners varies from person to person depending on your individual teeth. Each aligner is worn sequentially by the patient for a minimum of two weeks. There may be anywhere from 14-30+ aligners. This is determined at the beginning of your treatment.
WITH NICHAELA AYLWARD
Sun spots, liver spots, age spots and broken capillaries. Sound familiar? Pigmentation and vascular anomalies affect a large majority of Sunshine Coast locals’ skin. However, you don’t have to hide your hands, or cover your red and brown spots with layers of makeup in order to avoid them being seen. There are other options to help reduce the appearance of these little imperfections.
Prevention
Of course, prevention is the ultimate ideal. The use of sunscreen containing zinc oxide is imperative. Living on the Sunshine Coast, we receive high levels of ultraviolet radiation on a daily basis, so protection is always the first step in preventing sun damage. Once the damage has been done, no standard skin products will help ‘undo’ it. Professional medical grade skincare will be required, and if used correctly, these can
often achieve substantial results. With active ingredients and effective delivery systems to address sun damage on a cellular level, these are the only products that will actually make a difference.
Treatment
Treatment options are also vast. The treatment that produces the greatest result is Intense Pulse Light. It eradicates brown spots and red blood vessels and improves the appearance of the skin with minimal downtime. Medical grade chemical peels and microdermabrasion can also have an effect and improve the appearance of sun damage and ageing. By combining topical active ingredients with professional procedures, better results can be generated more quickly. When treating pigmentation and years of induced sun damage, progressive treatment is safer than aggressive treatment.

The aligners move the teeth little by little (approximately .25mm per aligner), you change to the next aligner every two weeks. During Invisalign treatment you will visit your dentist briefly approximately every four-six weeks, to check your progress and to collect your next series of aligners. Initially there will be a consultation appointment to determine if Invisalign is suitable for you. A big advantage with Invisalign, is that because the aligners are removable, you can continue to eat your favorite foods. The aligners are simply removed by you for eating and drinking. The aligners need to be worn 22 hours per day. Brushing AND flossing your teeth is absolutely essential with Invisalign. If you are not prepared to floss after eating this is not for you. We offer complimentary flossing lessons for anyone who is interested! Smile by Design 54432888 dentist@smilebydesign.net.au

oosa’s Natalie and Ben Nothling are the epitome of modern day parents. Juggling their internationally-adored shoe brand, holster, and spending time with their son, Miller, this power couple really does thrive on a challenge. Natalie embraces glamorous coastal style, designing embellished footwear that looks stunning on the beach and beyond. Adorned with sparkling and unique jewels, studs and crystals, the innovative holster collection is now a must-have for ladies and girls’ wardrobes globally. With celebrities often spotted in the latest holster jelly, and style icon Dannii Minogue the face of the current Rockstar style this season, it is not difficult to see why. profile: What do you love most about your job? natalie: The highlight for me is coming up with a creative concept and then turning it into reality. Whether it’s a shoe style or a marketing idea, when it is achieved, I feel very fulfilled. profile: What looks can we expect to see this season? natalie: This season’s Island Bliss collection showcases a beautiful array of on-trend colours, and the footwear is embellished with every accessory you can imagine. From casual yet chic slip-ons, to ultra-luxe Swarovski encrusted heels, the extensive fashion-forward collection aims to please ladies and girls of all tastes, ages and budgets.

profile: What is the must-have item for our wardrobes this season? natalie: A pair of holsters of course! They are the perfect beach-to-bistro or pool-to-party sandal, stylishly covering you through the day and into the night. I literally live in my holsters all summer long as they are my absolute go-to shoe.

profile: What is coming up in-store? natalie: The holster Noosaville boutique is currently brimming with an extensive range of ladies and children’s footwear and accessories that are perfect for the holiday season. In fact, it is the best time of year for holster lovers because not only are we stocked up with all the styles from the Island Bliss collection, but last season’s styles are heavily reduced to clear!
profile: Who is your favourite designer? natalie: At the moment I am in love with Australian label, Lisa Brown. Her feminine summer dresses make you feel like you are floating on cloud nine. We often use some of her pieces in our seasonal photo shoots.
profile: What is your fashion fetish? natalie: At the moment I am a little bit obsessed with animal print (the faux variety of course). The right amount of leopard or zebra print on a shoe or incorporated into a nice outfit gets me excited!
profile: How would you describe your own style? natalie: Coastal with a hint of glamour. The Noosa lifestyle is pretty casual and I love that element, however every girl likes to throw on a nice dress, slip into a cute pair of sandals and add a splash of lipstick every now and then.
profile: What is your best style tip? natalie: Fashion is an extension of your personality. There is no wrong or right – what is important is that you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin. If I had to give a tip, I would say wear clothing that compliments your individual body shape and don’t wear patterns that clash. If you are going with a statement printed top for example, then keep the shorts/pants or skirt on the simple side.
profile: What is your fashion inspiration? natalie: I draw most of my inspiration from beautiful Noosa. I feel so lucky to have lived here my whole life, I think it’s such a breathtaking location offering the ultimate lifestyle. I work most of the time from my home office, and the natural surroundings and fresh air help to heighten my creativity.
profile: What is your best memory working in fashion? natalie: This season, a highlight has been having Dannii Minogue on board to be the face of our Rockstar collection. She has been a real superstar to work with, and the Rockstar jelly that she is representing is my absolute favourite style this season.

eauty has always been second nature to Jenny Wilson. From her early teens growing up in New Zealand (where she completed an Advanced International Diploma in Beauty Therapy), to moving to Australia (where she worked alongside her aunty in a salon in Queensland), Jenny has lived and breathed beauty. It was not until a holiday in Noosa though, that Jenny stumbled across a newly opened salon and fell in love with the Coastal lifestyle and location. Twelve years later, she is the proud owner of Noosa Body and Skin Care, not to mention a mother and a wife. We caught up with the charismatic blonde to note down some of her beauty tips. profile: What is your personal philosophy when it comes to healthy skin? jenny: Lots of water, regular facials and peels, dedication to a skin care routine and an active lifestyle with lots of sunscreen. profile: What is your daily skin ritual? jenny: My daily skin routine starts in the shower with a salt scrub mixed with oil, scrubbing off the old skin and refreshing the new at the same time. I then double cleanse, spritz, and use a sunscreen with built-in moisture. profile: Are there any products you swear by? jenny: My Hydration Spritz, I love it! Dermalogica’s Ultracalming Mist is also great. It leaves a protective barrier on your skin, and you need less of your moisturiser. profile: What do you see most people doing wrong when it comes to skin care? jenny: Not cleansing properly and not wearing sunscreen.

profile: What’s your favourite ‘good’ food? jenny: Not sure how good it is, but it looks healthy – Mrs Mays Pumpkin Crunch. A yummy snack! profile: Do you do organic? jenny: Organic milk, I love it! Ivy Home Organic Milk comes in old-fashioned glass bottles too, it is delicious! profile: What motto do you live your life by? jenny: After my younger brother passed away five years ago, I decided that time was short and to push myself with an achievable goal each year. Since then, I have obtained my heavy traffic license (not sure if I’ll ever use it!) and purchased the salon. I am thinking this year I will learn to swim. profile: Favourite pastime or hobby? jenny: When I’m not working at the salon, I’m working on the farm. My husband and I breed, train and race thoroughbreds. We have a lot of fun doing it, but it’s very time consuming. However, it’s all worthwhile when you see your horse racing. profile: What’s your favourite spot here at home? jenny: I love Noosa’s network trails and take my horse whenever possible. There’s nothing better than a quiet, peaceful ride in the forest, or a fast gallop at Noosa North Shore. profilemagazine

LIFESTYLE HEALTH
Have you ever been chatting to a health enthusiast and heard them throwing around the word ‘superfood’? While your mind might wonder what a flying carrot with a red cape looks like, do you really know what makes a food super? Well, superfoods are a class of foods that are nutrientrich and considered especially beneficial for health and wellbeing, offering tremendous dietary and therapeutic potential. They are powerful sources of clean protein, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, good fats, and essential amino acids So what do superfoods do for our bodies?
Superfoods

When deciding to get your makeup done by a professional makeup artist, it’s important to research, plan and be specific when choosing your look. A natural look is usually favoured, using products that will last through tears, laughter, eating and celebrating. Here are some tips to guide you through makeup trials for a makeup look that is photo-perfect, natural and the epitome of a blushing bride! •• Make sure you have your trial at least three weeks, but no more than five weeks, before your wedding. •• If you plan on using fake tan for the big day, have a test run wearing the tan for your makeup trial so that your artist can see what colour your skin will be with the tan.

•• Wear a white t-shirt if you’re having your makeup test in a store so that you can see how the makeup looks against a pale colour, and take a picture of your made-up self in daylight (with no flash) to see how you look before you purchase any products. •• Remember that bridal makeup needs to have enough colour to compensate for the whiteness of the dress.

•• There’s a big difference between everyday clothes and a wedding dress, so there should be a difference to your makeup too. Makeup tips to get you started: •• Start by making sure your skin looks even and smooth, and then add colour to your cheeks and lips to give them a glow. •• Emphasise your eyes by brightening any darkness under them with corrector and concealer. •• Use individual eyelashes to make your eyes stand out. This is far more subtle than a full strip. Go for differing lengths to create a really natural fluttery look and nestle them in between your natural lashes, rather than fixing them on top. The best wedding makeup should last as long as you do! Tim Logan’s Nambour Pharmacy 5441 1417 nambour@guardianpharm.net

With bursts of colour popping from every canvas, mother and daughter, Kendall Perkins and Brydie Perkins-Brakells, are one exciting duo, using their creativity to paint a path around the world.

ctresses Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson prove that talent runs in the family, and the art world is no different. Internationally renowned artist, Kendall Perkins and her daughter, Brydie Perkins-Brakells, an emerging artist in her own right, have creativity oozing through their veins. While both women share a love of bright vibrant colours, their individual styles are very different. “I like to mix it up a bit when I create, therefore I never use just one medium on any painting,” says Kendall. “It creates interest and excitement in each piece. I do use a lot of acrylics as they are extremely flexible and fast drying, which is important to my style.”

Describing her art as “an explosion of screaming colour on canvas”, Kendall’s vibrant and energetic works are displayed in public galleries and private collections across Australia and the globe, including Dubai, Italy, London, USA and China. Her accolades include being the only Australian artist to have been invited to paint at the World Cultural Fair in China, an honour usually

bestowed only on the Master Artists of Asia. Kendall was also named Australia’s official Goodwill Ambassador to Seoul, and has painted for the King and Queen. Daughter Brydie is greatly inspired and mentored by her creative Mum. “I’ve been around art my entire life, and have been painting and drawing for as long as I can remember,” she smiles. “When I was a baby, Mum used to put me in a kapoochi on her front, and paint with me as I watched. “I now gather inspiration from animals, and I love patterns, so I always tend to use them in my animal pieces”. Brydie’s individual artistic talent has not gone unnoticed, with several exhibitions planned for 2014. “I will exhibit at the Montville gallery in February, as well as at The Rotary Art Spectacular in Brisbane, the Toowoomba Grammar Art Show and numerous upcoming group exhibitions in the Bryce Gallery in Christchurch.” Combined with Kendall’s exhibitions next year in Texas and Singapore and her budding homewares collection, this creative Buderim-based mother and daughter duo are certainly leaving bursts of colour and brush strokes as they paint their way across the globe.

UNDER TAMMIE NITCHSKE’S REIGN, EXCLUSIVE FASHION HOUSE ELIZABETH DE VARGA HOLDS THE CROWN OF ONE OF THE LAST REMAINING AUSTRALIAN-MADE BRANDS THAT WHOLESALES AND RETAILS HIGH QUALITY BRIDAL AND EVENING GOWNS. ANNA RAWLINGS CHATTED WITH TAMMIE TO REVEAL THE LAYERS BEHIND THE LACE.
arrange to meet Tammie at her Maroochydore-based store, and upon arrival, the sight of the stunning dresses adorning the windows greets me. And just like the gowns, the passion of Tammie, the protégée of the renowned Elizabeth de Varga, immediately shines through as I am given an insight into the world of bridal couture. Tammie’s fairytale journey into a world of twirling lace, delicate applique and divine designs began at Nambour TAFE, where she delved into a Diploma of Textiles, Clothing and Footwear. “When I was studying, I focused a lot on tailoring and the high-end, including intricate cutting and patterns. This developed into bridal couture.” It was on a fateful night under the bright lights of a TAFE fashion show, that Elizabeth de Varga herself, seated in the audience watching the collection of graduating designers parade in front of her, saw Tammie’s talent. “I won an award at that show and then met Elizabeth,” Tammie remembers. Six months later, she got the call. “I was asked in for an interview. It was a life changing moment,” she says

of her first entry into the business and brand 15 years ago. Starting in the retail store, Tammie learnt the ropes before an opening came up in the workroom. “I got to work really closely with Elizabeth and in design. I adored everything she did,” Tammie shares of her mentor. “Then, when the opportunity arose to buy the label, I felt it was where I needed to go – and here I am.” And here she is indeed. Since Tammie and her husband Bruce purchased the business in 2005, Elizabeth de Varga has grown to the point where it is now stocked in over 30 stores nationwide, employing 15 staff between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. It is also the recipient of multiple Australian Bridal Industry and Queensland Bridal Design awards, and was featured in the Mercedes Benz fashion show in Melbourne, while also being showcased at the Queensland Bridal Expo. “It was a stepping stone – one of those dreams realised,” Tammie shares of their decision to take over as owners. “Elizabeth was ready to retire, so we saw an opportunity and took it. Since then, we have been growing the business profilemag.com.au

Funnily enough, it was in Western Australia while wearing my steel cap boots in a mining job, that I decided I wanted to do fashion!” and trying to bring made-to-measure couture to the homes of many people.” Tammie has used her strong Sunshine Coast reputation to do so, with a local status of 18 years and an established and supportive family, including her two boys, Ryan, 8, and Cooper, 4. Her origins in fact trace back to country northern NSW, where she lived on a farm with her family. Living two hours from the nearest town centre, Tammie’s mum and grandmother both sewed, leading Tammie to make her own clothes from an early age, with her older brother sharing her creativity. “Being brought up in the country, you learn to work hard,” Tammie shares. Following her country roots, Tammie began to study agriculture at university, but after realising it wasn’t her passion, left on a trip around Australia with Bruce, who was her fiancé at the time, whom she had met at university. They travelled around Australia for 12 months, working in bars and mines. “Funnily enough, it was in Western Australia while wearing my steel cap boots in a mining job, that I decided I wanted to do fashion!” Tammy laughs. Her working life today is a far cry from safety attire in a mine site, instead surrounded by gorgeous stretches of fabric and sparkling Swarovski crystals. Days are spent liaising with suppliers, travelling interstate, attending meetings in Brisbane and generally showcasing the attention to detail, pleating and lace of the high quality designs that are synonymous with the Elizabeth de Varga name. “It isn’t always pretty behind the scenes however,” Tammie admits. “It is really hard work. We have had many late nights!” Juggling retail and wholesale shopfronts come with their own challenges, but Tammie has a strong team, and they make a combined effort to stay true to the label. In the wake of the global financial crisis, the downturn in the US economy and the recent election uncertainty, Tammie admits that the last few years have been tough, in addition to the influx of imported brands on the market and high overheads as a result of the costs involved in retailing their brand around Australia and New Zealand. Subsequently, Tammie and her team have launched a new ready-to-wear collection called Adore Bridal Couture.

“It is so exciting! We are still maintaining our dedication to high quality, but now we have dresses that are more affordable and accessible to everyone,” she says. “Everyone loves the product, but we just need to find that perfect price point.” Looking to the future, Tammie says she would love to see her stores expanding interstate, and becoming able to tap into the big Sydney and Melbourne markets for exquisite luxury bridal couture. “Our silks and laces are French and Italian, and the satins are made in Japan and China. We aren’t afraid to go high-end.” The couture dresses are testament to this, with some featuring painstakingly hand-sewn Swarovski pearls and diamantes. “We are aiming to get the new range recognised everywhere and to consolidate couture,” Tammie explains. With a list of local celebrities calling on Tammie to wear Elizabeth de Varga bridal, evening and ball gowns, including footballer Sam Thaiday’s wife Rachel, Channel 9 newsreader Davina Smith, Pauline Hanson’s daughter’s entire wedding party and a Queensland finalist in the Australian Miss Universe contest, the range is clearly on its way. However, Tammie recognises the true importance of tradition – a concept as timeless as the ceremonies her dresses are made for. “I think it is so important to teach the younger generation in the industry the art of bridal couture,” she explains. Tammie laughs as she realises she is carrying on the strong pedigree of Elizabeth de Varga in another way. “Now I go along to the TAFE fashion parades to scout for new talent!” Tammie shares. “Just like Elizabeth did.” And just like Elizabeth did, Tammie will continue to carry the crown of a bridal fashion empire with the air of a true design queen.

FLAXTON GARDENS CAN TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY. WITH ITS SWEEPING COASTAL VIEWS, IMPECCABLE GARDENS AND ROMANTIC ATMOSPHERE, IT IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO MAKE ALL YOUR WEDDING DREAMS COME TRUE.
T
here are many words one could use to describe Flaxton Gardens, but charming and captivating are the first that come to mind. This world-class venue, located in the heart of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, is undoubtedly one of the most exquisite wedding venues in Queensland. With its breathtaking views, enchanting photo opportunities, and use of delectable fresh local produce, it is no surprise that more and more couples are looking to spend their wedding day there. The three romantic ceremony and reception options boast spectacular vistas and have absolutely everything a couple might desire to create their perfect wedding. From The Winery and Barrel Room, which seat up to 240 guests, to the newly refurbished Vineyard Restaurant, which is perfect for a boutique wedding and seats up to 60 guests, Flaxton Gardens has it all. Open six days a week, with six full-time chefs and headed by owner Alan Thompson, each bride and groom can even enjoy a complimentary menu tasting before their big day. Luxury, on-site accommodation makes it easy for bridal parties and guests, with exclusive wedding packages offered throughout the year. And, as Georgina Thompson, proprietor and events manager of Flaxton Gardens explains, guests can even turn their stay into a mini-holiday. “We have seen families stay in the area for several days, enjoying rehearsal dinners and post wedding/recovery brunches, as
well as adding to the local economy,” Georgina says. “This gives family and friends an opportunity to meet and get to know each other before the big day, making the most of the region in doing so. The Sunshine Coast has many wonderful attractions that can be enjoyed over a wedding period.” The spectacular accommodation is situated with commanding expansive views of the Sunshine Coast, stretching from Moreton Island to Noosa. Built into the Winery Wedding packages, The Apartment consists of four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen and a large dining and sitting area – the perfect spot to relax and breath away those pre-wedding jitters! “By staying on-site the night prior to the wedding day, brides can wake up at their wedding location, and have all their hair and beauty needs done without having to move. With no travelling needed, it makes for a very relaxing and luxurious morning for the bride, especially in such a well-appointed apartment,” Georgina says. For something different (and a growing trend among the Sunshine Coast wedding scene currently), Georgina suggests a weekday wedding, with Flaxton Gardens offering excellent rates and availability from Monday to Thursday. “The Hinterland attracts many weddings on the weekends, and the region is a popular destination for short breaks. During the weekday, we offer an excellent rate, which obviously helps with the overall budget,” she says.

Grandeur’ and ‘quality’ is what we hear from past guests, and of course there’s the location.” “By sending out ‘save the date’ notices well in advance (once your ceremony and reception location have been chosen and booked), your guests have time to factor the day into their diary, so taking time off work can be planned.” A short stroll from Flaxton Gardens is Flaxton Grove, a grand three story manor home surrounded by acres of English style gardens, complete with a swimming pool and gazebo – all perfectly manicured within the gated entrance. As another option for your big day, Flaxton Grove is a photographer’s dream come true, offering up endless opportunities to capture breathtaking moments among vast coastal views, mature gardens and grand winding pathways. Georgina says Flaxton Grove is the ideal location for small weddings of 30, or even an elopement. “With other local accommodation close by, all your guests can stay within a short walk to Flaxton Grove, and the house can be decorated to your style, using all the Flaxton Gardens wedding inclusions,” she says. “’Grandeur’ and ‘quality’ is what we hear from past guests, and of course there’s the location. This home is large enough for everyone to enjoy with plenty of space in the gardens. It has the feel of an English manor home, and is all for exclusive use.”
Another fantastic part of saying ‘I Do’ at Flaxton Gardens or Flaxton Grove is the use of local businesses to support your big day. Georgina says a successful wedding is created as the result of many suppliers coming together and working in the best interests of the bride and groom. “Flaxton Gardens is proud to be a part of this growing industry – one that is bringing millions of dollars to the economy each year, and supporting local talents and professions in doing so,” she says. “Even though the venue might be seen as the focal part of the wedding, it is the small touches and the collaboration of all wedding suppliers that guarantees the overall success of any wedding day. Consistency is built by using regular local suppliers who know the venue and can therefore customise it accordingly with their local knowledge and experience.” Flaxton Gardens 313 Flaxton Drive, Flaxton, Queensland p: 07 5445 7450 e: info@flaxtongardens.com.au w. www.flaxtongardens.com.au

E IL E E N & N ICHOL A S How we met… I met Nick working while I was finishing Uni. I was working part time in a hotel on the Gold Coast and Nick joined the company shortly after. We were just friends at first, but it didn’t take long to realise there was something very special between us. When he proposed we… woke up one Sunday morning and Nick said let’s go out for lunch today. We went to a lovely restaurant on the wharf in Woolloomooloo, Sydney. Just before dessert, he slid down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was very surreal and everyone in the restaurant cheered. On the morning of the wedding I… was awake before sunrise. I was so excited and couldn’t sleep, so I gave up and went for a gorgeous early morning walk through Maleny. I needed that peaceful time to myself before the buzz of the day started.

I was so excited and couldn’t sleep, so I gave up and went for a gorgeous early morning walk through Maleny.” What I thought when I was walking down the aisle… I was taking everything in around me, all our close friends and family in the one place lining the aisle, the breathtaking, gorgeous setting and then the face of my husband-to-be beaming from the end of the aisle. Something that didn’t go to plan was… there was a strong breeze blowing during the ceremony and with a long veil it made it challenging. So during the ceremony I asked one of my bridesmaids to unclip it so I could relax. The speech I remembered most was… my father’s. It was a very challenging task for him due to his health, however he delivered it seamlessly and shocked everyone. The whole room was in tears afterwards, including Maleny Manor staff. If I could do anything different I would have… held the ceremony half an hour earlier to allow for some more time for photos with my extended family before heading off site with the bridal party. The ceremony was at 3.30pm. I was glad that I… gave my bouquet to my Nanna as part of my speech rather than doing the traditional bouquet throw. The best advice I can give is… start early and don’t procrastinate wedding planning! Try to have everything done so the last few weeks you can relax and enjoy being the bride to be.

EVERY BRIDE WANTS HER WEDDING TO BE MEMORABLE AND HER CHOICE OF FLOWERS OR ARRANGEMENTS SHOULD REFLECT HER SPECIFIC TASTE AND PERSONALITY. HERE ARE A FEW IN SEASON RIGHT NOW TO HELP YOU MAKE THAT SPECIAL CHOICE.

Hippeastrum Amaryllis
Delphinium
Brunia Albiflora
Calla Lily
Hippeastrum has an array interesting colour choices, from salmon, vibrant red, white, blushed pinks, and watermelon. Characterised by its long tubular stem, hosting between three to five large lily shaped blooms that twists as it opens, offering a breathtaking feature flower, adding elegance to any of your favourite florals.
The long-stemmed delphinium is characterised by the dense cluster of blooms collected along the length of the stem, tapering off to form a striking spike of a flower. Hues from royal to powder blue to mauves and white, it can be used long in a sheaf style bouquet or individually wired to add blue highlights to your bouquet.
A flat, cluster of pods make up the textural Brunia with its fern like leaves and silver to dark grey little pods. Offering a dramatic contrast against most flowers, especially when paired with whites blooms and the velvet textured Silver Dust foliage, to create a winter feel.
The Calla is a petite, refined version of its larger cousin, the Arum Lily, with single petals molded to form a petite trumpet like shape. The Calla Lily comes in shades of mango, burgundy and rich purple, so dark it can look black. The elegant, simple stem lends itself to sheaf style bouquets, but can be equally striking in a posy.

How do I secure a site for my business?
Entering into the occupancy of the right property and space is vital for any business. Making sure that the terms of your tenancy/ occupation suit your business is a cornerstone to your business’s future. You should obtain separate and individual advice when entering into occupancy of any space. The most usual agreement that you will be given is a lease. If you are a business that the Retail Shop Leases Act applies to, there are very strict requirements set out in that Act about notice and information before entering into a lease.

There are a number of matters you need to be aware of and to consider, and you can and should negotiate the following:
also be required to pay all of the outgoings for the property, including the rates, water and any other expenses.
1. How much is your rent?
7. Is the floor area you will be tenanting properly described in the lease?
2. Will the rent go up each year and by how much? 3. How long is your tenancy for?
4. Can you commit for the entire term of the tenancy? If you are starting up a business, you should consider a short period for the initial term, with options to renew, so that you are not committed to a landlord for a lengthy period in case your business does not work out. 5. Have you options to renew that you can exercise included in the lease, and are the terms of the tenancy for the options the same as the initial term? 6. What works can you do to the property with or without the landlord’s consent? You may
If you want to sell your business and assign the lease, you are going to need the landlord’s consent to that assignment. If you guarantee the lease (for example, the entity you have leased in is a company), it is not commonly realised that you will not be released from your personal guarantee by assigning the lease. You will need to provide for that in your initial lease if you plan on possibly selling your business during the lease term. Security of your occupancy will be dependent upon the terms of the agreement you enter into. You should obtain professional advice about any of the documents you are presented with.

How do I obtain pre-approval for my property?
Buying a property is a big piece of work, and finance is just one component of it. Recently we’ve found more and more clients are coming to us to get their finance in place before they find a suitable property. Basically, this involves preparing the formal loan application – apart from the property valuation. The valuation then gets done once a contract has been signed and the approval becomes unconditional. The pre-approval holds firm for up to three months – a reasonable window

of time during which the property “hunt” and negotiation process can take place. There are a range of reasons why pre-approvals are becoming more popular: 1. It gives greater certainty about how much people can borrow, and therefore helps narrows down the target property market segment. 2. It provides people with potentially greater negotiating power as they can demonstrate to vendors and other relevant parties that they are already well down the path of commitment as approved borrowers. 3. It saves a lot of time once the property has been secured by way of contract, as most of the work has already been done. 4. Sometimes one party to the loan is away from home a lot, e.g. a fly-in-fly-out worker, so getting the loan formalities done while everyone is available sometimes prevents problems later.
5. In a rising market, speed can be of the essence in securing that ‘bargain’ property or dream home from competing purchasers. Just keep in mind that pre-approvals are only valid for 90 days. After this time, the application needs to be ‘refreshed’. This means you’ll need to supply up-to-date income information such as a latest payslip, plus a new credit check etc. The application doesn’t start from scratch again; it just needs some key components updated. Pre-approvals should not cost anything to obtain. The speed, convenience and negotiating power that pre-approvals can give home buyers (or buyers of commercial property) certainly gives them a place in today’s property market.

Q&A JAMIE GRIGG

What benefits do I get using an insurance broker vs. going to the market direct?
This is a very common question from consumers looking to move over to my company. The benefits are many and varied when working with an insurance broker. Brokers always have a client’s best interests at heart and work accordingly.
In particular, there is one crucial benefit of using a broker, which is especially relevant to those who are time poor or find it hard to keep a track of paperwork.
82
profilemagazine
To demonstrate this benefit, I will tell you the story of a particular client of mine who runs a very successful accounting firm based in Brisbane and has several investment properties across Australia. I received a phone call a few weeks ago from his real estate agent advising me that storm damage had occurred to one of the apartment blocks over the weekend, causing in excess of $10,000 worth of damage to the roof, building, walls and light fittings. After viewing my client’s file, I could see the insurance policy had expired, and no payment had been received from the client. In most cases the insurer would have simply declined the claim based on non-payment of the premium by the due date (which is usually in very clear writing on the renewal notice from a direct market insurer).
This event occurred two days after the expiry of the policy, which meant that as the premium had not been paid by the expiry date, the policy was not active and my client was looking like he was going to have pay the expensive repair bill himself. So, the obvious question is – where is the benefit in this scenario? As part of the service of insurance brokers, we shop existing policies to the market and automatically renew them within 14 days of their expiry date. This means that despite not receiving payment for this policy by its due date, my client was still covered as the policy had already been renewed. Ultimately, the claim was accepted by the insurer, the client paid the premium for renewal and the repair works were completed.

What do I need to know about applying for a scholarship for my child?
Sunshine Coast schools offer a range of scholarships to assist families in the education of their students and to nurture students in the pursuit of excellence in their chosen fields Scholarships vary from school to school but include academic, music, the arts/performance, general excellence/all-rounder and sporting scholarships. The variety of scholarships provide a wide range of learning opportunities aimed at developing an individual student’s talents and
offering students the capacity to achieve high standards in academic, cultural and sporting endeavours. Scholarships are generally open to secondary students, with many scholarships awarded for the duration of the student’s schooling. Some scholarships are offered for a particular year only. Many Sunshine Coast schools conduct their scholarship testing and award scholarships early in the year, around March, although some special scholarships are awarded later in the year. It is best to keep an eye on schools’ websites for information regarding scholarship programs. Scholarships generally offer a discount on tuition fees, for example 50 per cent, however some schools also offer a Principal’s Scholarship, which covers 100 per cent of tuition fees. Levies
and other fees, including uniforms and books, are generally still payable. Schools use different academic testing authorities, such as Edutest or ACER, and it is important to check with the individual school regarding testing requirements. Some scholarships do not require students to sit an academic test, however portfolios detailing student achievements are required, along with recent school reports. Schools offer scholarship programs to nurture talents, and in turn, the students are a shining example to their fellow students. When considering whether to apply for a scholarship for your child, it is always advisable to do your research, talk to other parents and find out what each school offers. Ring the registrar and request a tour of the college campus.

WELCOME TO BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT – WHERE LOCAL BUSINESS PEOPLE SHARE ADVICE FROM THEIR INDUSTRY TO HELP YOU IN YOUR BUSINESS OR HOME. THIS MONTH, TALK WITH DREW FROM OTIUM GROUP ON BORROWING THROUGH YOUR SMSF AND MICHELLE FROM DOVE PERSONNEL CHATS ABOUT RECRUITMENT.
Super right, not super cheap: Three tips for borrowing through your SMSF.
Are you ready to recruit?

ompetition throughout the Self Managed Super Fund sector has been driving standards higher and prices lower. The next change could involve finance arrangements when borrowing funds within an SMSF. So when an online lender offers a lower interest rate than the market, take notice. As yet, none of the large banks have followed suit. And until one does, headline rates will stay at the same variable interest rate. But the headline rate offer is just part of the finance arrangement. Having experienced the good, the bad and the ugly of SMSF borrowing offerings in the market, there’s something far more important than the interest rate—the back office processing. The most critical aspect when looking to borrow funds within a Self Managed Super Fund is getting the complex documentation processed quickly to avoid delaying settlement. TIP 1
Always look for a bank that’s locally accessible.
With clients throughout Queensland, we always look for a bank that’s locally accessible to the client and offers the same level of service wherever the location. The last thing you want when time is of the essence in making an investment happen, is having to play telephone and email tag with bank staff that are interstate and often not readily accessible. TIP 2
Set realistic timeframes for completion.
Even before it gets to settlement, set realistic timeframes for completion. We suggest no less than 30 days for a finance clause, and no less than 60 days for settlement. Yes, it can be done quicker, but if it doesn’t come off after the messy extension application process, what’s the point? TIP 3 Focus on where the loan should be written to get the job done, not the headline rate. Time and increased competition will eventually bring rates into line. But for now, chase the right provider. Don’t chase cheap.

Recruiting a new staff member can be daunting, and there are many factors to take into consideration before you begin the recruitment process. Your budget Can you afford to employ a new staff member, and if so, can you maintain the sales required to cover wages long term? Looking at your business’ sales pattern and projected sales, while also gaining advice from your accountant, can assist you in this area. Casual or permanent After identifying that you require a new staff member, you have two options to consider. If you have an immediate need for staff but are unsure of long term requirements or unpredictable sales, casual recruitment gives you flexibility. If the position is an integral role within your company, you may want to consider offering a permanent contract. If you are recruiting through a recruitment agency, you may also have the option of a temporary to permanent arrangement, usually at a reduced permanent placement fee depending on your agreement with the agency. Job descriptions Developing clear job descriptions will provide your new staff member with a clear understanding of how they fit into your organisation. If you are utilising the services of a recruitment agency, a detailed job description will also help them in their search for your new employee. Ask for help Recruiting a new staff member is time consuming and can be overwhelming. Contacting a local recruitment agency to discuss your options may be beneficial if you are in unfamiliar waters. Recruitment agencies can save you time and offer you invaluable services, such as Replacement Guarantees, which you can use as insurance if the first placement doesn’t work out as planned.

he world is their oyster and quite rightly so, considering their passion and profession is in pearls. From humble beginnings at the Eumundi Markets, Corinne and David Sause have built an Australian pearl jewellery empire, as polished and bright as their success. Now, more than a decade on from the market stalls, and owning seven stores at one point, David and Corinne reflect on how far they have come from opening the first door of Pearls for Girls in Lanyana Way, Noosa. In 1997, Corinne and husband David launched Pearls for Girls after making the sea change from Melbourne to the shores of Noosa. Influenced by the ocean vista in which they made their new home, they drew on their business background and Corinne’s passion for pearls. Using local jewellers to craft contemporary pieces, today most of the designs found in-store are handmade, and they are now sought after as a retail point at the Royal Sydney Show and equestrian events, in addition to having a wholesaler in Sydney. Their pursuit of the perfect pearl leads David and Corinne to lead a jet-setting work life, as they travel the globe seeking unique and precious jewels, from America to the Continent. The Australian influence is still present however, and they take care to avoid manufacturing thousands of similar pieces, instead, only crafting five or so items. “We want customers to have that unique piece,” Corinne says. “David is the artist, and I bring colour and design.” Pearls for Girls is a certainly a family affair, with Corinne and David’s four children, Jake, Benjamin, Nathan and Ashleigh, all having worked in the business in various capacities over the years. “We are definitely family orientated, we all work well together,” she shares. “And David and I are very fortunate to be able to work alongside each other, live together and be happy.”

hey are hardworking, selfless and generous – a modern day super mum and dad who are juggling five children, a grandson and their business. Their latest baby – their new venture – has just celebrated its first year, and for Roger and Lucy Strohhecker, they couldn’t be prouder. Both Roger and Lucy grew up in Melbourne, before meeting each other and embarking on a romance that would lead them, after 20 years of marriage, to the Sunshine Coast. “We used to holiday in Coolum, and just loved Noosa,” shares Lucy. After relocating and making the decision to work for themselves, the couple searched for a suitable business. With Lucy’s background in accounts and Roger’s experience as a warehouse manager (and his notable ‘handy-man’ plastering skills), including two renovated houses in Melbourne under their belt, it was only a short search later that they found their dream company, buying into the tile repair and maintenance franchise, Tile Rescue. “We are looking forward to being able to offer employment opportunities in the future, expanding the business and continuing to make our customers happy,” Lucy says. While nurturing the business to fruition, Roger and Lucy are kept busy with their brood. Parents to five beautiful children, Chantelle, Jereme, Luke, Liana and Alexis, they are a gorgeously noisy, happy and diverse family. “We are so glad we moved. Everything happens for a reason!” says Lucy. And judging by the success of the Strohhecker’s, I couldn’t agree more.

T
ears well in the corner of Casey Murtagh’s eyes and she clutches the pendant of the necklace draped around her neck. It is the face of an orangutan, happy and smiling, carved intricately out of wood. She holds the trinket as she tells the story of the first time she broke down in tears after reading an article about an ‘orang’, named Leuser. “There was a very high profile case, a very heartbreaking case, in Indonesia that received a lot of media attention. Leuser, a critically endangered Sumatran orangutan was first rescued by SOCP (the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program) in 2004, when authorities intercepted him on the way to being sold as a pet. After eight months in a rehabilitation facility, he was released back into the wild, where he belonged,” she explains. “Two years later, Leuser was captured by villagers on the edge of the national park and he was in terrible shape, with 62 air rifle wounds to his entire body, including his eyes, which rendered him blind. He will never be released into the wild again.” The deep breath that follows is proof of Casey’s daily struggle, trying to raise more and more money and awareness in the hope that one day her beloved species will be saved and that the Borneo and Sumatran rainforests will no longer be destroyed. Casey says her experience with Leuser was not a stereotypical ‘change-my- life’ moment as you would expect however, having had a love of the outdoors and animals for as long as she can remember. Even as a child she admits to spending her days and nights exploring the bush and learning about the wild in country Victoria. At the age of 19, Casey took the chance to spread her wings and spent the next six years discovering the world, living the life of a gypsy, catching wild salmon in the ice beds of Alaska and watching as bears and wolves roamed across the quiet towns she resided in. It wasn’t until Casey’s 25th birthday that she decided to it was time to return home. Something inside her ‘snapped’ and a deep boiling desire to change the world bubbled up like a force.
“I discovered my real passion in life was to help endangered animals. It felt natural to me to try and help, but building up the courage to follow your passion when you are not sure if you have what it takes to make a difference is nerve racking. I didn’t know the first place to begin, but I thought education was a good starting point,” Casey explains. She enrolled at TAFE and studied conservation, with an interest in biodiversity. At the culmination of the two year certificate, Casey set out on a trip to Borneo, joining five women from around the world in a three week volunteer program with the Matang Wildlife Centre in Sarawak. “We had no contact with the animals at all. We were making them food, cleaning their cages and learning about them,” Casey says, recalling the first time she saw an orangutan. “The things I saw, the cruelty that’s being faced, the deforestation, the struggles of the people working there trying to make the most of the worst possible situations – it broke my heart everyday. The animals, the orangs – it is hard not to identify with them, especially because they are so similar to us, with their personalities and the way they carry themselves.”
I felt a sense of hopelessness, and I felt quite depressed. I thought, is the problem too big? But then again that’s not a reason to give up, it’s just more of a reason to fight.” There was no smoke and mirrors with what Casey saw. She knew the operators of the program were pushing bricks uphill trying to stop the palm oil companies destroying the forest and paying money to poor communities for their land in exchange for higher education and a steady job working on the plantation. CASEY MURTAGH PHOTO BY CHESTERTON SMITH PHOTGRAPHY
“It’s very confronting when you see them in their cages and you know that is not the way wild animals should live and that humans are the cause for them being there. We are the only cause for them being there.” When Casey returned from her trip she felt changed and focused. She could see what the problem was and how she could help. Her first call was to a man she had met while working at a local coffee shop – Property Works director Gwyn Jarrott – who became her mentor. “Gwyn said to me, ‘You need to tell the story because people need to engage in a story, and they will believe in you and what you have seen’,” Casey explains. With those words, she got started, and in little under a month, through contacting family and friends, she had raised $5,000 and was hungry to raise more. “I thought, ‘That was easy, imagine if I put some effort in’. So we refocused again and I established the People of the Forest Project to raise $20,000 to aid the expansion of the International Animal Rescue site at Ketapang (Borneo).” She assembled a small team to help and they set out organising a 150-person gala dinner, which was held in October last year. The night was an even bigger success than Casey could have imagined. The business people of the Sunshine Coast had heard her plight, donating almost $15,000 on the night. The Matang Wildlife Centre head of conservation Leo Biddle was the guest speaker, bringing to life the rescue work with the orangutans. But as Casey admits, she was nervous for Leo’s speech.

“I thought the guests might have been too overwhelmed with what he had to say,” she says. “But I didn’t need to worry – you could hear a pin drop. Everybody was completely focused on him and his subject. He has been in conservation for 17 years, he works for nothing and does it for the love and the passion. Everyone was engaged.” Fundraising had become second nature to Casey now and last year she was invited to trek across Borneo in the Trans-Borneo Challenge, through Orangutan Odyssey. The trek lasted 25 days, through 900 km of east and west Borneo. “I got to see a large portion of the country on my own two feet. I saw the palm oil plantations for as far as the eye can see, huge gold mining operations in the rivers and I really got a good sense of how bad it is,” she says. “I felt offended. It was hard to swallow, I felt a sense of hopelessness, and I felt quite depressed when I got back. I thought, is the problem too big? But then again that’s not a reason to give up, it’s just more of a reason to fight.” Casey explains some of the major problems facing Borneo and Sumatra include palm oil plantations, deforestation, illegal logging of rainforests, pet trade and poaching. “The whole country is being exploited for its natural resources, so there is a lot of oil refineries popping up, gold mining happening in the rivers, diamond mining in the south. The forest is being destroyed at 300 soccer fields an hour and the experts in conservation say that within 10 years, if nothing changes right now, we will not have any sustainable wild population of orangutans left in Borneo and Sumatra.” In the past two years, since her first experience in Borneo, Casey has raised an incredible $50,000. She now plans to apply for university to study conservation biology, as well as brainstorm for her next fundraiser, Surfers for Sumatra, which engages Australia’s surf community in her plight. “Fundraising is a passion to me now, it’s something I am thinking about all the time. If I stopped I would feel guilty because I have the skills now to be able to do something and I don’t want to look back in ten years time and think I should have put in more effort in.” Casey is just one woman and her achievements in the past two years are nothing short of extraordinary. Just imagine if we all had the same guts and determination as Casey – what a world we would live in.

PROFILE THE LAST WORD
ALI DAY
PHOTOGRAPHY CHESTERTON SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY
Star ironman Ali Day shocked the surf community with his withdrawal from the Nutri-Grain ironman series last year after a barrage of medical tests failed to identify why he was feeling so exhausted and unable to train. The 23 year old defied the odds to win his second Coolangatta Gold title in October, 2013, and was a sure bet to take out the series until his mystery illness took hold. Now, after two months on the mend, we catch up with Ali on his return to the sport to discover a little bit more about the Sunshine Coast-based athlete.
Most people don’t know that I ... am gluten intolerant.
I grew up in ... Kiama, a township 120 kilometres south of Sydney in the Illawarra area. I start my day by … swimming at Mountain Creek Aquatic Pool. We usually swim between five to seven kilometres from 5am to 7am every morning. It might sound early but it is my job, so I suppose you could call me a shift worker. I would love to be a better … mathematician! I have had trouble with numbers all my life, which was annoying at school when all my friends were good at it. I just could never get my head around maths. I am at my happiest when … I’m in the ocean. Whenever I have had a bad day or life gets a bit stressful, I just jump in the surf for a swim and I honestly feel a million times better. It puts me at peace and calms my mind.
Iron Man, Ali Day, chats to Profile about his gruelling training regime

When I am not working I am … resting. In between a heavy training routine, I need to make time to recover and rest, so I watch TV and go to the movies a lot. We only have six weeks off a year, so training really is a full-time job.
The best meal I have had was … nachos made by my girlfriend, Kel King. She made them for me on our first date and they were honestly the best thing I have ever tasted. She makes them whenever I go and see her, and I crave them when we are apart! My favourite restaurant is … Gluten Free For Me in Maroochydore. Most people don’t know that I … am gluten intolerant. I was diagnosed when I was 11 and it was honestly the worst timing. I was wanting to go stay at friend’s houses, eat pizza and all that sort of stuff and I couldn’t. Now I think of it as a blessing in disguise because it has made me a healthier person, having to think about what I eat, and to be organised with my food. When I was growing up I wanted to be … an ironman. I started nippers when I was six and was always competitive when it came to water sports. My greatest achievement is … winning back-to-back Coolangatta Golds in 2012 and 2013. My hidden talent is … I am a really good singer! profilemag.com.au
