Welcome 18

As a working mother of three, I am all too familiar with trying to find that elusive work / family balance. Aren’t we all! Fortunately, these days most employers recognise the value of supporting women to make the transition back into the workforce after having a family, some even offering a creche to accommodate young children! Then there are those clever mums who have turned their passion into a lucrative business they can work on from home around their family commitments. Perfect! Our gorgeous cover girl Nadine Clark is a shining example of this. What started as a hobby for Nadine while she was at home with her two little girls has turned into a thriving business for her and her husband, but it hasn’t been without some personal hurdles. Nadine’s inspirational story is testament that anything is possible if you work hard enough. We also chat with talented mother of two Lisa Howson, a savvy businesswoman who has created her own eyelash and eyebrow extension business she conducts from home, while raising her two darling little girls. Trio of mumpreneurs and best friends Helen Lindell, Tani Klein and Amanda Bromley share their journey towards successful online businesses with us, and mother of two young children Lyndal Harris reveals the benefits of working her own hours in the cyber world as a virtual assistant. Beautiful Coolum is under the spotlight in our destination feature this month and as always we bring you all the latest in food, fashion, style, art and homewares. The Profile team have had such fun bringing you this issue. We hope you enjoy it. So sit back, relax and enjoy this special issue featuring mums in business! Cheers,

OUTRAGED BY THE STANDARDS OF THE EYELASH EXTENSION INDUSTRY, ONE GIRL HAS MADE IT HER MISSION TO RAISE THEM. AND ALL THIS AS SHE WRANGLES LITTLE PEOPLE FROM THE ‘COMFORT’ OF HER HOME OFFICE, WHICH DOESN’T HAVE A DOOR. JESSICA JANE SAMMUT REPORTS.

L

isa Howson is a girl after my own heart. A mother to two young children, Lisa is testament to the fact that women can do anything, having launched her new company, Advanced Technology Beauty Group (ATBG), at the beginning of this year with a bub of two months on her hip. And all this while her partner works away in Papua New Guinea six weeks on, two weeks off. Who said women couldn’t do it all? Lisa certainly is. With a devotion to her family, who she describes as the most important thing in her life, Lisa battled against bullying as a child, and knows first hand the damage it can cause. As a result, Lisa is passionate about helping others feel good by looking good, taking care of their mind and body in doing so, with a career in the beauty industry which now spans more than 10 years. “I learnt from a young age that beauty is a reflection of how you feel,” smiles Lisa, who is very much the swan these days having spent her youth battling with ugly duckling syndrome. “My goal is to make every person feel amazing about themselves and to enjoy and embrace their beauty. Life is too short not to.” Having conquered her demons, recently entering the Ms Australia pageant as proof of this, Lisa is flying high on her mission, which she describes as her calling in more ways than one. “The lack of regulation across sectors of the beauty industry in Australia astounds me,” explains Lisa. “Many eyelash extension adhesives here consist of chemicals which are known to be harmful to us, a large proportion of which have already been banned in Europe. “We are so behind. There is minimal industry regulation and little cosmetology law in Australia. It’s a lucrative market for anyone to import and sell products, which are unsafe commercially. We need to protect the consumer. There are untrained technicians performing procedures they have only a basic understanding of, applying products with no regard for what is actually in them or how they have been tested. “Eyelash extensions in some salons, for example, are attached to the eye using the same industrial super glue which you will find in your shed, often tinted black with carbon, which is in itself unsafe. Some of the chemicals used can even lead to blindness.” On a quest to raise the bar of the Australian eyelash extension industry therefore, 12

Eyelash extensions in some salons are attached to the eye using the same industrial super glue, which you will find in your shed.” Lisa has called time on her involvement with global cosmetic labels, for whom she once represented, instead developing her own cruelty-free human-safe eyelash and eyebrow lines, adhering to European standards voluntarily in order to raise the quality of what is on offer this side of the equator. Her products – so far, lash extensions (LashXpress and LashXcel) and a brow builder (BrowXtend) – are already causing huge waves in the beauty business, with more to come, Lisa promises. It has been a brave step forward for someone who understands the power of the commercial giants she is up against. Born in Melbourne, Lisa studied Aquatic Science and Commerce at Deakin University as a young woman, obtaining a Diploma in Product Development and Front Line Management at RMIT University while working in the cosmetics industry. In 2009, the Sunshine Coast was calling and a relocation to the area couldn’t have come at a more perfect time, with Lisa falling pregnant with her first baby Lila soon after, followed by Annabelle three years later. “The time off having my children allowed me to really think about what it was I wanted to contribute to the world,” says Lisa. “After vigorous research, I became alarmingly aware of the nasties being used in beauty products, and perhaps being a new mother strengthened my feelings towards this. So, I decided I wanted to try to make the industry a better place. “Researching alternative options and liaising with Asia and Europe, I was excited by what I discovered, which were safe ISO-approved ingredients which didn’t harm animals in their creation. And so I started to develop my own products, refining and tweaking them until they were right. “One of the first things I wanted to create was a time-saving alternative to applying individual eyelash extensions, and so, LashXpress was born, which is now one of my hero ranges.” Lisa is a mummy on a mission. Working from home in her little office (with no door!), she admits life is all about juggling, as she runs from high-end commercial project to grazed knee / pumpkin mash. “There is no such thing as the perfect equation in trying to work out the home / life / career balance,” smiles Lisa. “You just have to take your chances where you can! I work to meet my need for self-satisfaction rather than to create an empire, so I remind myself of that sometimes and continue to make time for my daughters in doing so. There is a lot of give and take.” Aiming to work in conjunction with the ‘Look Good … Feel Better’ program (lgfb.org.au), the community service initiative dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to manage the appearance-related side effects caused by cancer treatment, Lisa is keen to build such a worthy cause into her manifesto. “I have a long term vision of working with cancer patients, helping people feel great again when going through such difficult times. I am even in the process of developing a product just for chemotherapy patients. I can’t think of anything better than using safe, toxic-free products in this way to create beauty and happiness.” Hear, hear Lisa, to a safer and more beautiful future for us all.

ave you ever worked from home? I’m sure the answer is a resounding ‘yes!’ With technology so accessible at our fingertips today, it’s almost ‘the norm’ to take the laptop home to finish off spreadsheets, or check emails on the iPhone while taking the dog for a walk. But there’s a new realm of technology-savvy professionals turning the comfort of working from home into a successful business model, putting an end to shuffling between office and home desks and permanently switching off from the rat race. It’s the cyber world of dot.com desktops, where once unheard of job titles such as ‘virtual assistant’ are now the new currency in office support stocks. Virtual assistants (VAs) have burst onto the scene, offering the capabilities of skilled personnel to fill temporary staff absences, cover a specific skill set or assist with increased business workloads. One such successful VA is Sunshine Coast mother of two and wife, Lyndal Harris. Her introduction into the virtual assistant realm began after an online internet search (naturally!), following the birth of her second child. “It’s an interesting story,” Lyndal shares. “A friend of mine works for Queensland Tourism and they used a VA at the time. She told me the term and I literally typed the title into Google that night and I knew straight away that was what I wanted to do, it was perfect!” With 20 years of administration / project management and team leader roles behind her, Lyndal dived into the cyber world. She completed a social media qualification in 2013, with her bigger picture now to become a content marketing VA. Lyndal personally works with five to six clients at a time, logging about 25 hours per week. Her services range from social media and email management to general business support. “I love the flexibility, I love the variety of work, you’re never doing the same thing,” she shares. “Flexibility to be able to be there for the kids. My eldest started school this year … so to be able to go to school things or kindy – I really love that about it. “To start with, I worked in the evenings. I realised pretty quickly I needed to put some boundaries into place to get that work / life balance! My two kids are very different – I have one child who I could do some work from home with and I have another child who there is no way I could get five minutes done! It was a matter of really structuring the time I had while the kids were in daycare.” Now, Lyndal is perfecting the precarious balancing act between working successfully from home and raising a young family. “I tend to try and do the ‘meatier’ stuff in the morning as I am definitely a morning

profilemag.com.au

Have a specific workspace and have rules when you’re in it working. Work ‘after hours’ – either before the kids wake up or after they’ve gone to bed. Ensure you have creative and fun activities for the kids so you don’t get bombarded with, ‘I’m bored’. Prioritise your tasks around kids’ sleep time. To help find that perfect work / life balance juggling kids and work, outsource some of your tasks to a virtual assistant!

person. I have times when I check in on my emails and my social media.” Lyndal works from her home office on a property in beautiful Mooloolah Valley, where she lives with her family – husband Simon and children Jasmine, 6, and Isaac, 4. “I’ve got a glass sliding door in front of my desk so I literally look out at trees, and then out on the deck on the other side is just rainforest. No traffic noise, very much back to nature,” she says of the view from her home office – a natural ying to her technological yang. Despite the peace and quiet, Lyndal admits to missing her old routine on occasion. “I’m quite social, so yes I do miss working in an office. I’ve got friends who have offered for me work in their office space at times, which is great especially when my husband worked away from home – I’d go for a week and just have a two-year-old and a four-year-old to talk to!” she laughs. Aside from friends, Lyndal values the support of her colleagues, a web of VAs connected by shared experiences. “Within Australia there is a virtual assistant association and then there’s a number of VA networks as well ... it’s a tight knit, great community to be part of!” she enthuses. “It’s not really competitive, it’s about working together, and I suppose a lot of people are solo operators so it’s a nice network to be able to bounce ideas and ask for people’s thoughts and things like that.” Of course, the market does have its drawbacks. “There are professional VAs who own their own business … and there are also offshore VAs – a lot of them are based in the Philippines or India. There is a difference in the service you get,” Lyndal says. “It’s not to say they don’t have a place in the industry … it is just not a partnership as such like having a professional VA who has vested interest in their client’s success.” Lyndal shares the virtual assistant’s presence is a rapidly growing one in the professional business world, as it evolves to mirror the advanced technology it relies on to exist. “Some of the VAs that have been around in Australia have been around for about 20 years or so … technology back then was much different!” she laughs. “File sharing and project management software just changes the ballgame really. Personally I get really excited about the software that’s available in content marketing – social media and online videos are really exciting.” “I do believe that now with the software that is available it’s becoming a much easier playing field!” november 2014

WORDS ANNA RAWLINGS

T

o me, the term ‘offspring’ describes my favourite TV show and to be honest, I have enough problems looking after my two pet guinea pigs (seriously, I am constantly wondering if I’ve skipped out on the maternal gene!) So, not being too wellequipped to discuss new motherhood, I turned to our editor, Ingrid who as a mother to three beautiful children, was more than willing to share the realities of life’s changes with a newborn in the picture. As Ingrid was laughingly listing some of the unexpected characteristics she developed upon her career return with a new baby at home, our office was in stitches at the sheer hilarity and mortification she had experienced. We all had a good laugh, but I can only imagine what she was going through at the time! From volunteering for the post office run to savour the brief glimpse of alone time and wearing heels that don’t match (apparently this is quite a common occurrence!), I was informed when you’re busy raising a human being, you’re lucky to get some lipstick on and after hibernating in pyjamas for three months, wearing a nice work outfit is cause for excitement. There’s that time you have successfully presented yourself appropriately to your team at Monday’s important meeting and are feeling more fab than frumpy with brushed and styled hair, nice makeup and a dressy outfit to herald your sassy comeback as a working mother. Unfortunately, your next bathroom break reveals a multitude of horrors from a suspicious looking stain of vegetable mash on your pants, vegemite fingerprints proudly displayed on your freshly-ironed work shirt and the hair tie you twisted into a smooth bun this morning is your toddler’s frilly pink scrunchie. Sigh.

november 2014

With six months to a year’s (generally) feeding experience under your maternity-friendly belt, you prepare to tackle integrating a feeding / breast pump routine into your daily office to-dos. Unfortunately, your body and instincts just want to provide nourishment and don’t care about your brand-new silk Tokito blouse or adding to the stress of the poorly-timed traffic jam you are currently stuck in en-route. Whoever contrived the saying about crying over spilt milk clearly never had employed breasts.

The annoyingly carefree 20-something-year-old from the desk next to yours flounces into work and plonks down her handbag, spilling out leopard-pink sunglasses, bright lipstick tubes, the latest iPhone and an industrial-size can of hair spray. You catch a glimpse of your own handbag; dummies, nappies, baby food and breast pads float in the depths. Is that a used baby wipe? Oh, how times have changed.

Congratulations, you’ve officially graduated from baby brain! Your new qualification involves complete disorientation about what day of the week it is, your diary reminders have reminders and you actually forgot your name at the weekly staff meeting. Don’t worry, after leaving your car keys in the office fridge for the umpteenth time, it will wear off. To all new mums out there, these crazy, peculiar new habits are the badge of motherhood, and whether you are returning to work or working on your new family at home, keep on running that marathon. After all, feeding twice, changing dirty nappies and being spewed on before 9am is all in a day’s work! profilemagazine

GREAT MOTHER, BUSINESS WOMAN AND ENTREPRENEUR, NADINE CLARK DESERVES ALL THESE TITLES AND MORE, BUT IT HASN’T COME WITHOUT SOME HEARTBREAK. KATE DAVIES SITS DOWN WITH THE BUBBLY BLONDE AND DISCOVERS HOW THIS SUNSHINE COASTER CREATED HER CRACKLING SUCCESS.

F

or a woman who has turned a small candle-making business into an international success story, Nadine Clark is quick to downplay the hype. “I’ll never think of myself as being one of those big-business, entrepreneurial mums,” she says as we sit at a dark wooden dining table, overlooking a breathtaking view of the Sunshine Coast from her Hinterland home. Scents of lemongrass, vanilla, raspberry and coconut drift in and out of the room as Nadine and I chat. She doesn’t seem to notice as each one pricks past my nose and sends my senses into overdrive, forcing memories to race through my mind and making it difficult to concentrate completely on the task at hand. The culprits of this memory-sparking attack are stacked in their hundreds just two metres to my right; a wall of Crackling Candle Co soy candles, diffusers and melts, ready to be shipped out to all corners of the world, evoking the same loving memories to dozens of strangers as they have on me. It’s weird how a fragrance can do that; raspberry and cold winter nights snuggled up on the couch, coconut and a beach in Bali, fig and cassis and a warm breakfast of porridge on the coast of Tasmania … I know now the reason why Nadine has been drawn to the candle-making business. It’s the same reason her loyal customers keep coming back for more. The Crackling Candle Co business venture started in 2012, while Nadine was pregnant with her second daughter, Sienna, and working as an optometrist’s assistant. The idea was only ever meant to be a

“little hobby” for Nadine to enable her to stay at home with their newborn and three-year-old … and still make a bit of pocket money on the side. It was never meant to become a full-time job, Nadine admits, smiling. “Cam and I have always loved premium candles, we were happy to pay $50 for the ones at Montville, but we could never really afford them that often so it was always a treat when we did. I just thought I would start making them and maybe sell a few at the local markets as a hobby.” For the next eight months of her pregnancy Nadine worked on her candle recipe, spending countless hours each night in her home kitchen, testing different fragrances, pouring and melting soy mixtures in a saucepan. “I did a lot of research. It was such a science getting temperatures right and I just spent every other moment that I wasn’t at work and with the kids trialling and testing the mixtures,” she says. “After months and months I finally had a product I was happy with, so I decided to design a label and I took them to my husband’s work. The response from his colleagues was amazing, not only did they want one they wanted five. They wanted one for themselves and four as gifts … all of a sudden we had sold 100 candles.” Without even realising it Nadine had created a product that would soon be sold around the world, and in perfect time too because what happened next left their little family in unexpected and devastating turmoil during the arrival of baby Sienna. “My first baby was big, she was nine pounds and she got stuck at

birth, so when it came to my second baby I should never have had a natural birth. Sienna was 10 pounds four ounces and she also became stuck and unable to breathe,” says Nadine, the painful memory flooding back. “It was a complete emergency. Hundreds of midwives came running. I was getting thrown up on the bed and drips were falling everywhere. When they got her out, they plopped her on the bed in front of me and she wasn’t alive, it took them 12 minutes to resuscitate her and it all happened in front of me.” Nadine doesn’t remember the time that passed on the hospital bed before her newborn baby girl was whisked out of the room. She describes it as some of her darkest moments. “The next thing Cam was telling me a helicopter was waiting for her, she was having seizures and it appeared she might have brain damage. They took me downstairs and the helicopter was already there to take her. They had started to cool her so she was just in a nappy, no heating, her mouth was to the side and she was having seizures.” Sienna was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane where she was put on ice to keep her temperature below a hypothermic level to ensure her brain did not swell. It’s where she stayed for three days while doctors monitored her every movement. “When I finally saw her again she was just laying there on ice packs,” Nadine says. “But the good news was her hands were up, her legs were up, which was such a positive sign.” Sienna protested against every move the doctors made. She screamed and wriggled and demanded food. It’s moments like these which would usually send a mother into panic, but doctors assured Nadine her little girl was simply fighting for her life. 24

After three days on ice and seven more spent in intensive care, Nadine and Cam finally had a reason to smile. An MRI proved Sienna did not have brain damage and she was going to be transferred to Nambour Hospital. The good news kept coming too. “We went in that morning and she was almost warmed up. It was like a 20-hour process, just .1 degree every 10 minutes. They said we were going to have to tube feed her because she would have lost that natural instinct to feed but I protested and said let’s give it a go … within three seconds she was breastfeeding perfectly. “All the midwives and doctors who were there that night all came down crying and saying they didn’t think she would survive, it’s such a miracle.” Despite a harrowing road to recovery, both physically and emotionally, Nadine kept her sights set on her candle-making hobby and was determined to make it to her first market. So four weeks after Sienna was out of hospital, Nadine and Cam set up a stall at the Caloundra night market. And the response … “it was incredible”, says Nadine. From then on the pair set up stalls at almost every major market on the Coast, starting at Eumundi and South Bank the following February, all the while baby Sienna was along for the ride. “I was breastfeeding until she was 12 months. I breastfed her in the back of my stall and when a customer came I would take her off and go and serve.I cannot believe I did that now!” laughs Nadine. “She is such a happy baby, nothing ever bothers her. With all her immunisations she just smiles at the doctor, she doesn’t even cry. She was put on ice for the first three days of her life and she thought that was what the world was, imagine what she was thinking! I think that’s why she is such profilemag.com.au

All the midwives and doctors who were there that night all came down crying and saying they didn’t think she would survive, it’s such a miracle.” a good baby.” From February onwards, word of the Crackling Candle Co spread and people from all around Queensland were travelling to Eumundi or South Bank to buy one. “Some people say they have brought them so much joy,” says Nadine. “Some people have cried to me about what they have done for them. It makes every market so rewarding because so many people now, and we are talking 10, 20, 30 a market, will come up and even if they are not buying they will say something positive and walk off. “The feedback we get from people at every market is such a high for us and it makes our 90-hour each a week worth it.” Yep, you heard it right, 90-hours a week! That’s how quickly their little home business has grown. So much so, Cam had to quit his job in July this year to keep up with the demand, some days now working an incredible 24-hours straight. “I was still making the candles in my kitchen with Sienna at home and Leila in daycare two days. I told Cam he had to quit his job, I just couldn’t handle it anymore. It was a big thing, quitting a massive job, there is always a risk, but we have never looked back, every single week the business grows.” Cam is now pouring up to 100 candles a week in their garage at Rosemount, while Nadine delicately stickers each glass jar, giving each creation the same love and devotion as the first. “Cam will work all night, sometimes two to three nights a week without sleep. You can’t just pour a candle, there are so many techniques that go with it,” Nadine says. “He is now just a few metres away and I probably see him less than I did when he was working because he basically lives up there and I am november 2014

down here and he comes down for 10 minutes a day, half an hour maybe and then he is back up there,” she laughs. “Finding someone to help is impossible because we are so passionate about each and every candle, it has to be perfect and nobody else thinks that way except for us. It is so hard to let go.” Crackling Candles Co are now exclusive to Spicers Retreat and Makepeace Island. They are sold by wholesalers in Melbourne and throughout Queensland, with online orders even flowing in from the US and Europe. “We have an atlas that we put pins in when we know where they are going, and we are now up to 20 or so countries. I have customers in the States who pay more for the shipping than they do for the candles,” Nadine says proudly. “On a Sunday night Cam and I get a chance to sit down and tell each other all the stories of what we have heard all weekend at the markets … we have like 25 stories each to tell. It’s so nice, it really is worth it.” Looking back two years ago, Nadine admits she probably wouldn’t recognise the woman she is today – mother to two beautiful healthy girls, a thriving stay-at-home business, and a husband who works by her side … she also says she wouldn’t change a thing. “I have never had that career drive. Mum was all about us kids and I guess that my goal in life was to have kids … I never really thought about having a career. I mean, I always dreamed of being that person, you see mums who have created this great business, but I never thought it could be me. “I still pinch myself that it’s happened and I’ll probably continue pinching myself for a while longer!” Modest until the end, Nadine you deserve all the accolades of your wonderful candle creation. Thank you for the memories. profilemagazine

t has every surfer’s dream breaks, turquoise waters and towering headlands boasting famous views of the Sunshine Coast. The small beachside town of Coolum is buzzing with friendly tourists and locals alike basking in its natural beauty. The town is known for its iconic Coolum Beach with sandy sea bays linked by boardwalks, allowing you to wander the popular stretch of coastline. It sits only 20 minutes south of Noosa and is a hotspot for Brisbane day-trippers and campers. It offers a variety of accommodation options from five-star to budget. It’s lookouts, Point Perry and Point Arkwright, are not only a lovers paradise for proposals and weddings, but are also some of the best land-based whale watching spots on the Coast. Both are easily accessible along the Coolum Boardwalk on David Low Way and offer amazing views northward to Peregian and Noosa Heads. Mount Coolum greets you at the southern tip of Coolum in Mount Coolum National Park and dominates the landscape. The 208m high volcanic rock helped form the region’s name, deriving from the local Aboriginal word Gulum, meaning headless. The park is a haven for over 700 identified plant species and is home to a nest of Peregrine Falcons. There is something for everyone at Coolum as it boasts some of the best surfing breaks in Queensland, extreme sports, leading golf courses and provides walks in endless sanctuaries created to keep the region a natural haven. The famous Australian PGA Golf Tournament was hosted at Coolum for several years and Palmer Coolum Resort’s golf course is a prime course for any golfer. Don’t forget to keep a watch out for the friendly kangaroos who like to be a part of the golfing action. Once a sleepy seaside town, it has seen growth with the renovation of the Esplanade precinct and the

The restaurants and cafes compete with the best on the Sunshine Coast, which sit amongst a hive of street entertainment and buskers on weekends. The heart of Coolum is surrounded by the luscious Tickle Park by the sea, the perfect spot for picnics in the fresh salty air. Nestled beside the park is Coolum Surf Club, which hosts a variety of events throughout the year and is a great spot for a bite to eat and an icy cold beer, while overlooking the beach. Once you have tasted Coolum, you will never look back, as visitors are known to continue to frequent the region for years to come. The beaches were first opened to visitors at Christmas 1918 and since then have been popular with campers. The Coolum Beach caravan park is an old time favourite and sits on 10 acres of pristine beachfront land. In 1925 the region started to blossom as the cane tram from Nambour carried weekend visitors to the beach. At the time residents were lured by the outstanding fishing and duck, quail and snipe shooting. By 1946 Coolum had grown to become declared a township and with the completion of David Low Way has continued to grow until today. With the emphasis on natural beauty and preservation, and the welcoming locals, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to be a part of Coolum.

INVESTMENT REALTY

ANNE-MARIE I’ve been involved with Think Money for about four months and in that time they’ve completely revamped my approach to paying off my bills and my home loan, and they’ve connected me with people who’ve changed my approach to my superannuation.

Think Money take away all the worry and the stress, they approach the banks, they organise the loans, they do everything for you. My lifestyle hasn’t changed, I’m still planning an overseas holiday next year, I haven’t had to cut back on things like going out and buying presents.

So far I’ve bought one investment property through Think Money, and through their strategies I’m looking at two more through a self-managed superannuation fund, on top of the property I live in which is now being paid off at a faster rate. I used to figure you had to save and save and save to get there and I would never have considered that I might be able to afford investment property.

Because of the different approach, it’s kind of like a ‘whole life package’, it allows me to do extra things with the money as well as live my life with it. I have security in my future so I can relax and enjoy life. It’s only been four months, but it’s been a good four months!

CHANGING THE EATING HABITS OF KIDS AND ADULTS ALIKE INTERNATIONALLY, SAM SPUNNER HAS BROKEN INTO A MARKET WHERE OTHERS HAVE FEARED TO TREAD, AND IN DOING SO HAS MADE HEALTHY EATING ON-THE-GO A BREEZE. JESSICA JANE SAMMUT REPORTS.

ormer family daycare owner, soon-to-be mummy and founder of Sinchies, Sam Spunner, has always had a passion to help kids eat healthier. “I’m passionate about providing children with the best possible chance in life, and this includes nutrition. Eating well and showing our little people how to nurture their bodies is a gift, and it’s one we all can give,” says Sam. “Modern parents in today's fast-paced society face a range of competing demands when it comes to feeding their children. “Topping this list are essential factors such as healthy eating, affordability, convenience and ease of preparation, which is why I wanted to create something that helped to make this possible. Fast food the healthy easy way!” Born in Zimbabwe where she lived until she was 18 years old, Sam is a woman with a purpose. Arriving on the Sunshine Coast at the age of 22, after a stint living in the UK, Sam couldn’t believe her luck, describing the Coast as one of the most beautiful places on earth. “My brother had moved to Australia a year before, and I had always hoped to join him,” Sam smiles. “The weather, the lifestyle, the friendly sense of community. I had to pinch myself when I arrived.” So it was with great excitement that Sam set up her nest in Caloundra, and looked to the future. “I suddenly felt like anything was possible. I loved children, and was qualified as a childcare worker, so I took a job in a childcare centre. I couldn’t wait to hang out with the kids all day. Before long, I felt ready to spread my wings a little, and set up my own family daycare.”

After four years working with children in her family daycare, however, Sam found herself coming up against a repeated issue that was making the kids in her care miserable and her day at work more difficult than it had to be. “It was the time when the squeezy baby pouches and yoghurt pouches were fairly new to the market. Kids loved them and so did parents. They were quick, easy, not messy, and made it possible for kids to feed themselves, giving them a sense of independence. “Most of the children in my care used to have at least one in their lunch box, except for those with intolerances – and this was where the problem lay, those who didn’t have one felt left out and punished that they couldn’t join the fun. “One little girl in particular, who was allergic to dairy, used to cry every day that she couldn’t be the same as the others, and it broke my heart. So one day, I syringed her dairy-free yoghurt into a makeshift pouch replica, and it hit me. Why wasn’t there a reusable pouch on the market that parents could buy to fill with their own choice of puree / yoghurt / mousse / custard / smoothie / sauce?” Speaking to family and childhood educators, and undertaking in-depth research, Sam realised she had stumbled upon a unique yet simple idea. “From there, in a huge leap of faith I ran with it, and two years later, Sinchies was born,” explains Sam. “It was a long process, but one which ensured I got Sinchies absolutely right.” Sourcing a suitable manufacturer, choosing the best eco and humanfriendly materials and testing the various pouch designs, Sam had her hands full, all the while continuing to run her family daycare. When it came to the launch, her hard work paid off, with Sinchies, the profilemag.com.au

original clear reusable eco-friendly squeezy food pouch, rocketing into the marketplace through word of mouth alone. Before long, it was time to set up a website and a Facebook page, and from there businesses flocked to Sam’s door begging to stock her pouches. Within a short space of time Sinchies were being distributed globally – and all this from her little home office on the Coast. “It’s been a bit of a dream,” laughs Sam. “The biggest hurdle has been believing it would happen and never giving up. It’s a huge mountain to climb – from thinking of a product to actually having it designed, made and manufactured, not to mention all the safety compliance standards that we have had to adhere to. “I have literally been behind a computer from 4am to 7pm every day for over a year, but it has been worth every step. I now run Sinchies full-time, and just to mix it up a bit, I am also pregnant too! It’s been a rollercoaster ride!” And it’s not just a healthy approach to food that Sam is promoting. This woman with a vision is also putting Sinchies to good use in helping tube-fed kids become more mobile, with her pouches replacing the heavy bottles that children have to sit with when it comes to their liquid meals. “Now parents can fill a pouch, attach it to their child via a plug and place it in a backpack that their child can wear so they can move around when they are being tube-fed. How much nicer is that for a kid? We are even putting it to use with head and neck cancer patients also, who can suck their food out of a Sinchies pouch, making it easier for them to feed.” From someone who was just grateful to be in Australia, Sam has certainly made good use of her time so far. Sporting an Aussie accent and a positive mentality to match, Sam is testament that you can be or do anything in this country of opportunity and entrepreneurialism. Having already won Best Innovative Business for Kids on the Sunshine Coast in 2013, and recently the Baba Indaba Most Green Product Award in Cape Town, South Africa, Sam is living proof that where there’s a will, there’s a way. And even better, why not do it from the comfort of a Coastal abode? Sun, sea, sand … and success. It’s all there for the taking. november 2014

Q Q

LASER HAIR REMOVAL: THE FACTS

What is it?

A NEW WAY TO TREAT VARICOSE VEINS

Varicose veins and surface veins affect many women. These veins can be unsightly and may ache. They can also cause medical problems such as bleeding, blood clots and skin ulcers. For many years, veins have been treated with either injections (sclerotherapy) or surgery (for bigger varicose veins). In order to successfully treat most varicose veins with surgery the “feeding vein” is tied off or stripped and the varicose veins removed through very small incisions. But now it’s become possible to avoid the stripping component of the treatment by using a technique called Endovenous Thermal Ablation (EVTA). EVTA uses a laser or radiofrequency energy to cause the feeding vein to constrict and ultimately block up. This stops the reverse blood flow in the feeding vein and reduces pressure on the varicose veins, which can be treated at the same time with very minor surgery or later with injections. Patients are able to return to their normal activities sooner. Scarring is also reduced as no large incisions are required. Vascular surgeon Dr Karl Schulze, from Sunshine Vascular, is now able to offer these procedures to a wide variety of privately insured and non-insured patients. Treatments take between 30 and 60 minutes with appropriate anaesthesia provided by an experienced anaesthetist to minimise any discomfort. After the treatment, the legs are bandaged and stockings applied. Day surgery and overnight stays are also possible.

Laser hair removal is a quick and effective way to achieve permanent hair reduction, freeing you from other hair removal systems that leave you with irritated skin and ingrown hairs. It can be used to reduce unwanted hair anywhere on the body leaving you with smooth skin! How does it work?

The laser works by directing concentrated light via a laser into the hair follicle inhibiting the hair’s ability to grow. Unwanted hair is exposed to a specific wavelength of laser light and pulse duration, which work together to destroy the hair follicle at the root without damaging the surrounding skin tissue. What are the advantages over other forms of hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a quick and easy treatment that offers instant results. It is a far cheaper alternative to waxing and shaving in the long run with permanent results. It allows you to forget stubborn ingrown hairs and bumpy skin leaving you with silky smooth skin all year round. What cost is a treatment or series of treatments?

Prices for laser hair removal start at $13 and vary depending on the area being treated as well as how many treatments you book in. Some of the most popular areas to treat include female Brazilian and underarms, lip, full face, half legs, full legs, snail trail, back and shoulders and chest and stomach. Is it permanent?

Prior to undertaking any treatment for varicose veins, patients are assessed by Dr Schulze at the Sunshine Vascular Vein Clinic. It is important to understand that not all varicose veins are best treated with endovenous thermal ablation and by visiting an experienced Vascular Surgeon all available treatment options (including sclerotherapy, surgery or endovenous thermal ablation) can be discussed.

Laser hair removal works best when clients undergo numerous treatments to reduce hair in the different cycles of growth. We recommend a treatment course of six to 10 treatments to particular areas of the body which are performed four to six weeks apart depending on the client’s hair type and skin colour. Laser hair removal offers permanent hair reduction, with minor maintenance needed.

Amy and husband Mick, purchased the Duporth Avenue business at Maroochydore in 2013, after trying on her own gorgeous wedding gown in store 14 months earlier. Having worked in the fashion industry for 12 years and being a beauty therapist by trade, it was a perfect fit for Amy. “Bridal is my niche profession,” she says. “We like to break the rules at Eve Boutique when it comes to bridal fashion. When you walk in to Eve you will see very different bridal styles, we are not like the majority of the bridal stores on the Coast.” This month Profile catches up with the stylish business owner for an insight to her bridal fashion expertise, just in time for wedding season!

profile: Wedding season is upon us, what’s in fashion for brides? amy: It’s all about the back this year. Backless gowns with the ‘wow’ factor, sexy but modest. Also vintageinspired sheer lace overlays. Interesting floral appliques with intricate draping and lush fabrics. profile: What advice do you give brides-to-be when it comes to choosing a wedding dress? amy: Try on lots of different styles to work out what suits your shape the best. I see brides all the time who want a particular style, they have dreamt of it their whole life, but find that they choose something totally different as what they imageined does not suit them or they fall in love with ‘the one’ that is different. Also keep an open mind and listen to your bridal gown stylist for recommendations and tips. profile: What are the must have accessories for brides this season? amy: Must have accessories are a good lippy and a gorgeous hairpiece to complement your gown! profile: What are the rules for picking shoes to go with a gown? amy: When it comes to shoes I am one for breaking the ‘rules’; if a bride wants blue shoes she should have blue shoes. In saying that, you wouldn’t pair wedges with a feminine soft wedding gown … I could talk about a thousand ‘rules’ for shoes.

profile: What physical considerations should brides keep in mind when choosing a gown? amy: The best tip for fitting into your gown is to have the alterations done one month before the wedding date. Not too early in case you are wanting to lose more weight and not too late as you want to know your dress is ready in your cupboard for your big day. profile: Where do you look for inspiration when sourcing a new collection to stock? amy: I like to look at styled shoots and different locations around the world. I’m always looking out for new labels that no one has seen before on the Sunshine Coast. When you walk into Eve you expect something different and that is what we deliver. profile: What are the latest bridal trends? amy: Cream is the new ivory. Soft romantic pastels are becoming popular again with decor and bridesmaids. profile: What is your favourite colour combo? amy: My personal favourite would have to be shades of pinks and champagne. It is soft, feminine and romantic. Perfect for a wedding! profile: Do you have any personal styling tricks? amy: The right veil is very important to complement the gown. Choose the wrong veil and it can offset the whole look. Cathedral veils are making a come back. We have a new range made with a blend of silk that drapes down beautifully with our gowns. profilemag.com.au

WORDS NICOLE FUGE PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

Next year marks 30 years since Joh Bailey picked up his first pair of hairdressing scissors and in that time he’s styled the most glamorous of stars including the late Princess Diana and Kim Kardashian. Joh is one of Australia’s foremost leaders in hair, but it almost didn’t happen. “I finished my HSC and my parents said I needed to go to university and I said that wasn’t going to happen,” he explains. “Then they said you need to get a trade, but they were thinking plumbing, bricklaying, carpentry and then I come home and say I’m going to be a hairdresser!” While Joh admits he loves the glamour of hairdressing, it’s not all about the hair. “It’s an exchange of feelings, you send someone out the door feeling better about themselves,” he says. Joh is on the Coast every six to eight weeks, cutting hair at COZmedics in Cotton Tree and it’s as much of a treat for him as it is for his clients. “The women I deal with in Sydney, who I adore, are quite spoilt as they’re used to having this,” says Joh. “Coming up here is refreshing, the women appreciate it more because they haven’t had it so much. It’s nice to be part of that.”

JOH’S TOP TIPS: 1.

Keep it real: Hair colour should look natural, like it could be your own.

2.

Don’t over-do it: Your hairstyle might have taken you three hours but don’t let it look like it has.

3.

The long and short of it: Long hair is still big, I think it always will be. There are some hot short hair cuts, but past a certain age short hair is not an option because it’s too hard on the features. Keep it to late teens into 20s, maybe early 30s if you’re looking good.

4.

Look after your asset: Don’t burn it, don’t over colour it and put a hat on.

5.

Start again: If you’ve tortured your hair with colour or straightening then cut the dead ends off.

It is estimated that smokers will take twice as long to fall pregnant.

profilemagazine

So, you want to get pregnant. What can you do to increase the chances of falling pregnant and delivering a healthy child?

or absent periods and ovulation. As little as a five to 10 per cent reduction in weight in women with PCOS will enable many to fall pregnant naturally.

In short, make sure you are in good health. Have a healthy diet. Exercise for one hour three times a week to a moderate level of intensity. Stop smoking. Stop drinking alcohol. Limit your coffee intake to one cup per day. Take a multi-vitamin, one including iodine and folate for women, and one with anti-oxidants for men. If you are obese, lose weight. Have your Rubella immunity checked. If you want to check your egg reserves, get a blood test (AMH). Make sure your pap smears are up to date. If you have any long term medical problems or are taking medications which may be best avoided during pregnancy, talk to your GP or specialist to optimise or change your treatment.

What about smoking, caffeine and alcohol? All three of these factors pose risks. The time taken to fall pregnant is increased. For example, it is estimated that smokers will take twice as long to fall pregnant. The risk of miscarriage or damage to the baby is increased, and the chance of a live birth is reduced. All these risks appear to be related to how much of these three things you consume. High alcohol consumption is harmful to the baby, and it is not clear if there is a minimum amount of alcohol which is safe in pregnancy. I commonly tell my pregnant clients that an occasional glass or two is very unlikely to be a problem, but the safe option is to avoid alcohol when trying to become pregnant or during pregnancy.

Let’s go into a bit more detail on that information. We’ll look at weight first of all. There is no doubt that obesity adversely affects fertility and pregnancy outcomes. There is a higher chance of miscarriage, diabetes during pregnancy, labour difficulties and caesarean section delivery. Women with polycystic ovarian disease (PCOS) who are obese are more likely to have irregular

Caffeine intake is probably the least dangerous problem. At higher levels of consumption, the risk of miscarriage increases, and the time taken to fall pregnant also increases. This is important to consider in older women or where there are already other fertility concerns.

Dr Simone Ricketts | Smile by Design | 5443 2888 | 102 Wises Rd, Maroochydore A mouth ulcer is essentially the temporary erosion or loss of the delicate tissue lining the inside of the mouth. Often small, painful, occurring alone or in a group, mouth ulcers can appear randomly and last seven to 10 days. Some of the factors that may trigger mouth ulcers include: • Stress and anxiety • Hormonal changes • Nutritional deficiencies e.g. lacking vitamin B12 or iron

The occurrence of mouth ulcers is often a sign to listen to your body…”

• Poor oral hygiene • Local trauma to inside of mouth e.g. accidentally biting lip, cheek or tongue • Physical trauma e.g. old, sharp or loose dentures or fillings and sharp foods • Burns from very hot, spicy or very acidic foods • Medications e.g. ibuprofen , aspirin, high blood pressure medications • Chemotherapy and radiotherapy • Coeliac disease

november 2014

• Crohn’s disease • Lupus Xerostomia (dry mouth) If you are prone to mouth ulcers it is vital to boost your immune system. This includes having good food containing plenty of vitamin C, A, and B. In particular, two B vitamins – folic acid (B9) and thiamine (B1) have been shown to heal and prevent mouth ulcers. Don’t avoid brushing your teeth as good oral hygiene will actually help prevent secondary infections of the ulcers. Some options for easing the ulcer pain are to absolutely avoid acidic foods and drinks. Try kenalog in orabase or curasept gel applied to the ulcer, or rinsing with bicarb soda helps. The occurrence of mouth ulcers is often a sign to listen to your body, especially your immune system, and your tiredness levels. Reduce stress, get a good night’s sleep regularly, and boost good nutrition. Most mouth ulcers heal by themselves but do seek dental / medical help if they last longer than seven to 10 days.

POWER OF THREE WORDS ANNA RAWLINGS PHOTOS CHESTERTON SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY

FOR HELEN LINDELL, TANI KLEIN AND AMANDA BROMLEY, THERE’S POWER AND STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. THIS CLIQUE OF SAVVY MUMS HAVE HARNESSED SOCIAL MEDIA AND ONLINE TECHNOLOGY TO FORM A SUCCESSFUL COLLECTIVE OF INDIVIDUAL ONLINE BOUTIQUES, DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM THEIR FRIENDSHIP ALONG THE WAY.

A

sales-driven sisterhood, combining fashion, friendship and family in their online ventures, these Sunshine Coast mothers are a force to be reckoned with. These lovely ladies embody what it means to be a ‘mumpreneur’ – they all own and run their thriving online boutiques in a niche market, while juggling married life, and two children each. Oh, and they all still manage to look stunning! I had the pleasure of chatting with the talented trio to find out more about their respective online businesses. Helen owns and runs Scandinavian-influenced children’s clothing store Baby Goes Retro (www.babygoesretro.com.au), while Tani is the innovator behind Doodlebug (www.ilovedoodlebug.com.au) and Amanda founded The Organic Store (www.theorganicstore.com.au). “The whole ‘internet shopping’ came on the scene and it all sort of started to pop up that you could actually shop online,” says Helen, whose Scandinavian origins influence her label’s designs. 66

profilemagazine

Now, her business has almost doubled in size from just last year. “I used to just work on it for two or three days per week, it’s now grown to a full-time job with a full-time wage,” she says. Her other full-time job? Juggling Baby Goes Retro with her family – husband Brett and her children, Flynn, 13, and Pearl, 8. Helen’s success inspired Tani to launch Doodle Bug five years ago. The range of eco-friendly baby and children’s clothing made from naturally organic bamboo fabric is designed and illustrated by Tani herself, and it’s a family affair – her children Mila, eight, and four-year-old Oscar are her models, and husband Greg snaps a lot of the photos. “After I’d met Helen I saw that you can do it, you know, you can actually be brave and do your own thing and have an online business. And with a lot of mentoring from her, I’ve gone from ironing on my designs in my garage to having 70 or so different retailers around the world!” Tani shares.

profilemag.com.au

Even though we’re all online we aren’t in competition with each other and can still learn a lot from one another.”

Amanda, who started The Organic Store in 2010, not long after the birth of her first child, is now experiencing similar popularity with her brand. After her family moved to the Sunshine Coast they soon started to realise the benefits of organic living, and with a 15-year-strong background in marketing and public relations, Amanda combined her expertise with her love for organic products, and launched her business with full support from husband Nathaniel, Malia aged five, and Nainoa, two. By the time Amanda was up and running, all three women had firmly found their fortes, delighting shoppers with their unique products and designs. Online they were entrepreneurs and sharp-minded business women, at home they were mothers and wives, and together, they were toasting their shared success as friends and colleagues. The treasured friendship began with Helen and Tani connecting in a chance meeting at their children’s daycare more than eight years ago, after Tani and her husband, Greg, relocated to Australia. Tani was then on the look-out for unique jewellery for her wedding. Amanda interjects with a smile, “I was making bridal jewellery from Peregian Markets at the time and Tani came to me for a pair of earrings.” Since then, the women have been firm friends, and in the absence of extended family on the Coast, they fill that role in each others lives, too. They are a strong support network and are grateful for finding friendship, mentorship and family in one another. “Working on your own is so isolating – you don’t have workmates and you don’t have Christmas parties … if you have a bad week, you don’t have anyone to say, ‘it’s just a bad week’ and if you have a really great week it’s so nice to be able to say to someone, ‘guess what!’” says Tani. “Even though we’re all online we aren’t in competition with each other and can still learn a lot from one another,” says Helen. “We’re pretty much all in the same boat in a lot of ways, being a mother and having each other for support.” This support extends to sharing their online skills and talents, with all attributing social media to part of their brand’s expansion. Tani shares, “What I’m finding really interesting is the response I get as a designer when I expose the person behind the brand … or if I’m showing the drawing, people really connect with that. Social media makes that possible.” “It’s definitely a great tool to have to create buzz around the product, it’s definitely taking everything to a new level,” says Helen. Amanda says, “We’ve all done markets and that’s one of the ways we’ve built our businesses. Times have changed, now with social media, it’s just revolutionised the way we do business and it’s absolutely essential for us to november 2014

understand and utilise social media on a daily basis.” The other two nod in agreement. “It’s Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, e-newsletters, it’s everything!” Amanda continues. “It’s no longer a nine-to-five world … there are so many ways people can now communicate with you.” As we talk, the ladies are candid and open about the realities of working as online mums. Tani says, “It’s a double-edge sword. A big drawcard for me of working for myself was being able to be at home with the kids …but you’re always doing two jobs at once so therefore you’re not giving your best to either job. I’m there for them. I love that flexibility. And being able to be productive when I’m feeling like being productive and if things are slow I don’t have to go to the office anyway and sit there like I’m trying to work.” Before we wrap up the interview, I ask the ladies what’s next for their online empires. “I’m at a bit of a crossroads at the moment, looking at options over the next couple of years depends on the direction the business takes,” muses Helen. Tani says, “I’m just reaching the point after working so hard on growing and getting the name out there that I’m like, hang on, maybe I don’t want to get that big. Maybe I still need a bit of balance in my life. I’m realising that I’ve ticked off a few of those boxes and reassessing.” Amanda agrees, “It’s a challenge, you get to a point where you’ve developed your business and ticked off all your first round of goals. You start to think, ‘I’ve achieved that, where am I headed now?’” It’s clear that each lady is an individual success, and as a collective? Unstoppable. Innovative. Fabulous. profilemagazine

So highly committed to offering a superior building experience, Nathan and Grace Staal opened their display home on Buderim earlier this year so they could highlight the beautiful detail that a modern custom home build provides. ‘We are about delivering a building experience that makes the process easy. Our in-house design team work with you and the builder to create a home that is 100 per cent right for you and your family, and one that comes in on budget. We have seen it too often where clients come to us to quote their home and the plans that they present are way above their budget. We have taken this on board and removed the risk out of having your plans completed for your home’. Involving Green Earth Homes at the start of your design process can save you thousands of dollars throughout your build and for the years that follow.

The do’s and don’ts of engaging a builder: 1. Don’t contract an unknown builder who is not established 2. Don’t be fooled on price – when comparing a quote, don’t go for the quote that is cheaper – this should ring alarm bells 3. Don’t contract a builder who won’t show you his work 4. The builder must hold a current QBCC licence 5. The builder must be transparent with inclusions and exclusions 6. The builder must provide you with a detailed quotation 7. Ensure that you enter into a formal building contract prior to starting your build (either a Master Builders or HIA Building contract) 8. Ask about the builders sub-contractors 9. Sign with a fixed price quotation; If your quote does include PS (Provision Sum) be very clear of what has been included for this price (don’t get caught out)! 10. No shortcuts: You must ensure that your home is designed correctly and built right to the building regulatory standards – no shortcuts Green Earth Homes specialises in custom-designed new homes, major renovations and multi-occupancy dwellings. The team is passionate about meeting the needs of all clients and offering an exceptional building experience. Have the security in knowing that Green Earth Homes only uses highly-skilled tradespeople with an exceptional record for high quality finishes. SEMI-HIPSTER NOOSA WOMAN, FLEUR RAPACIOLI AND HER ALTER EGO, THERMOMAMA, ARE TAKING THE FOODIE WORLD BY STORM. AND IT ALL BEGAN ON A QUEST TO LIVE A MORE NOURISHING LIFE.

W

hen I meet Fleur, her warm embrace, individual sense of style and selection of bliss balls overwhelms me. Fleur is different, in an enchanting way. Sassy, creative and super cool, the culinary mama on a mission to live a simpler yet healthier life, greets me with a green smoothie in one hand and her black-rimmed glasses in the other, wearing a look which impresses upon me the feeling we should be best friends. A food lover, Fleur has always been a great cook, with an interest in nutrition and healthy living dating back to her favourite childhood book, Herbs That Heal. But it wasn’t until earlier this year that Fleur took to social media to share her excitement in obtaining a much longed-for kitchen gadget (a Thermomix), and found herself at the centre of a digital whirlwind. Followers flocked with each image she posted of her simple yet delicious family-friendly creations made with the plug-and-play kitchen appliance. And soon Thermomama had become the go-to-gal for those who wanted to eat well and live wholesomely. It was a complete shock to the mum of one, who had originally taken to the online world as a bit of fun. “When I purchased my Thermomix, I struggled to find quality content that I could relate to in terms of recipes and techniques,” explains

Fleur. “So I started to experiment with things myself, and posted my results on Instagram. I figured there must be others out there like me and thought it would be nice to connect through our shared love of food. I couldn’t believe the response I received. Every day I gained new followers and the Thermomama community took on a life of its own.” Born in the UK, Fleur and her musician husband (along with Tilly the dog) moved to Australia in 2006 in search of a sea change, settling in Perth before finding their beach oasis on the Sunshine Coast. But it wasn’t until Fleur fell pregnant with her little girl, Daisy, that she discovered she had an underactive thyroid, a condition which really made her think about what she put in her body. “When I found out about my thyroid condition, I started to look at food in a new light,” reveals Fleur. “Shortly after this discovery, my husband was diagnosed with a gut disorder, and it was like the universe was trying to tell us something. “We sat down to assess our lifestyle, and decided to embark on a gluten-free diet consisting of additive-free natural ingredients. It was about going back to basics a little and eating as our grandparents would have eaten, cooking from scratch, listening to our bodies and making life simpler. And so we began. And as we did, we started to feel so much better – more energised and happier.” On a journey to fuel her family’s body with goodness, while also keeping things real in today’s busy and expensive age, Fleur looked for ways to cut corners to make achieving her goal easier. So when her $15 blender (that she had for 10 years) broke, the timing seemed right to make room on her kitchen workbench for her next appliance. Little did she know it was to represent so much more. Having now become the online guru of the thermo-world with more than 7,500 fans on Facebook and 3,300 on Instagram in just a few months (and rising every day), Fleur has brands falling over themselves to work with her, and has recently agreed to her first collaboration with Down That Little Lane. It’s an adventure she did not expect, but one she is running with willingly, believing that everything happens for a reason. “I do think that what you put out there comes back at you,” smiles Fleur. “It manifests. If you have raw authentic passion for what you are doing, perhaps it attracts a like-minded positivity.” With a blog (www.thermomama.com.au) and recipe ebook now underway, Fleur is hopeful for the future, with her inspiring message to nourish the body and soul by finding our feel-good-food – however that might work for each of us – spreading across the digital cosmos with speed. “It’s time for a healthy mama revolution!” Fleur roars. And I, for one, couldn’t agree more. november 2014

1. Chia pudding. Place a handful of cashews with 1/2 cup of water and two dates and blend on speed 10 for one minute. Add chia seeds, honey and vanilla, and leave in the fridge overnight. 2. Bliss balls. Grab some dried fruit/nuts/seeds – about 100g of dried fruit to 50g of nuts and seeds (I like date and almond). Combine with any other super foods you like (chia, goji, cacao etc.) and blitz on turbo until the texture resembles crumbs. Roll into balls and refrigerate. 3. Dips + veggies. My hands-down favourite dip is the capsicum and cashew dip from the Thermomix Australia Everyday Cookbook. I can eat it on EVERYTHING! Chop up some carrot sticks and you’ve got yourself a damn tasty snack. 4. Salad jars. Kept in a fridge, these babies keep for a few days. Perfect for on the go. Add the dressing first, then layer up leaves, beans, cheese – whatever takes your fancy. Don’t forget to pack a fork. 5. Smoothies. Yup I know, smoothies are best consumed straight away, but I still think that a smoothie kept cool for a few hours has to be better than a week-old pasteurised juice? Load with ice, store with a tight lid, and keep cool and dark until you are ready. Don’t forget to pack your eco straw!

HOME INTERIORS

E

rica Fanning can’t remember a day when she wasn’t “completely obsessed” with interior design. Even as a young girl growing up in regional NSW, she was always rearranging furniture and building houses out of match sticks and using nail polish as paint. So, it was only a natural progression for her to then study an advanced diploma in interior design, move to Sydney and pick up a job working with well-known designer Nellie Tilley of Nellie Tilley Interiors, who opened Erica’s eyes to what beautiful creations are possible within a home. She has since launched her own Sunshine Coast-based design firm, Erica Fanning Interiors, in 2013. This month, Profile catches up with the savvy designer to find out what defines true style!

profile: What does interior design mean to you? erica: I live and breathe interior design and decorating. For me, it’s simply a way of life. Interior design and decorating has always had a major influence on how I live, and I remember whilst studying I would always opt for two minute noodles if it meant I could put the savings towards a new ottoman or a new cushion. profile: When did you start your career? erica: If I recall correctly, it was the day I learned to draw (about six years old), when I began to develop my love and passion for interior design. Growing up, my father and I would spend hours modelling miniature home designs from match sticks, and I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t rearranging furniture in my family home. profile:What inspires you? erica: When people give genuine time and consideration to designing their home in a way that really reflects who they are as individuals, or as a family, and what type of lifestyle they lead. One of my favourite experiences is being able to walk into a home and I can tell, just by being in that space, the type of people who live there – including their interests, their influences and the type of lifestyle they lead. profile: How would you describe your design style? erica: I love the juxtaposition of coastal and glamour. Coastal-inspired interiors automatically bring about a sense of calm and a connection to nature, whereas glamour reflects man made materials and generally highly reflective surfaces. I love to layer textures like sisal, velvet and linen together, I find the juxtaposition between the textures visually interesting and unpredictable. I place a strong emphasis on colour selection and have a firm belief in ensuring colours are selected with a distinct connection between the space and its surroundings. 72

profilemagazine

profile: What’s on trend this season? erica: Watercolour prints and pastel dusty tones of blues and pinks. We are seeing this season’s colours and prints in soft furnishings like cushions and throw rugs, floor rugs, abstract artworks and we’re slowly seeing some upholstery pieces emerge in these tones too. These colours are best teamed with a Scandinavian style interior – think blonde timbers and crisp white walls. profile: What is your design philosophy or motto? erica: I have two philosophies: the first being to really understand how my clients live and interact in their home, and then tailoring a design that will enhance their experience within that space. The second philosophy is ‘good design should, and can be, accessible to anyone – no matter the budget or geographical location’. profile: What design trends do you think will last? erica: The elegant and timeless details that make up the ‘Hamptons style’. I don’t believe in creating a cliché replica interior of this particular style, however I feel that there are a multitude of elements that make this trend timeless. For instance, the Hamptons style fundamentals begin with a neutral palette on the walls or large furniture pieces, and then texture, pattern and colour is layered on top to create a lived-in feel. The other timeless aspect of the Hamptons style are the accessories finishes. They are generally a matte or satin finish, which I think ages gracefully as opposed to the high gloss offerings of more modern interior design trends. This is a method and style that will not disappear quickly.

O

kay, I’m just going to say it … women are amazing! And after spending a wonderful couple of hours chatting with a group of talented working women over lunch at the Cherry Blossom Tree, Mooloolaba I am even more convinced we really can do anything! However, it’s no secret we can also expect way too much of ourselves, as we stretch like chewing gum to accommodate the needs of our work life, home and family … always in search of that elusive balance. I had the opportunity to delve a little further into the topic of the work / life juggle with a group of fabulous women who candidly opened up to me about the daily struggles they face as working women in today’s fast paced, super busy society while still trying to be a nurturing mother and keep some semblance of order at home! The results were both hilarious and reassuring as we discovered our stories were remarkably similar! Thank goodness it’s not just me who gets excited about doing the grocery shopping on my own! We like to make our mark in the world. ann-maree: Women have high expectations and we are high achievers. We like to do everything well. We want to do well in our business but we still want to be a good mother and housewife. Trying to juggle those things and working full time is hard. profile: Why have we become so hard on ourselves ? mia: I think part of it is societal pressure. Society still expects women to be Suzie Homemaker. We are focusing on our careers and starting our families later in life, so when family comes along we still want to keep achieving and you want to be a good mum too. I have a very supportive husband and times have changed so much from when we were young. Dad worked and mum looked after us. These days, men have to pitch in and cook, clean and look after children. It’s evolving. ann-maree: We put a lot of pressure on ourselves. We like to think we can do our job, and keep everyone happy and run the house and be a good mum! ana: I am a bit different in that I don’t have children and I’m not married ... my partner works away. I came to Australia many years ago from the Middle East. For me it’s more about living up to the expectations of my family and the Persian community. My parents came to Australia with nothing and they have managed to have businesses and buy houses and be successful. We have had a great education so the expectation is for us to do well. profile: How do you find that balance? ann-maree: I suppose you just learn to live on less sleep! I do a lot of things at night. I try and pre plan and be organised. My sister-in-law gave me a wall planner when the kids were

little and it has a column for everyone ... it’s the best thing ever. It’s probably harder when you run your own business because the buck stops with you and you have to pick up all the bits and pieces. mia: You never switch off when you have your own business. My two-year-old daughter is in my full-time care. I have a nanny one day a week who is a godsend and then my husband has her at the weekend. We co-parent, which sometimes is a stress for me because the house is a mess but it’s not a priority for him. During the day there is no time and when she has her sleep I get a lot of work done. I also make sure I walk every morning and I try to do yoga at least once a week just to be still for an hour which is very important. profile: Did your upbringing affect the way you are as a woman and mum? cheryl: My mother did not bring me up in the 70s and 80s to become a housewife. She educated me to become this working woman but now I find that I am working but I still have to be a housewife! Being a mum and running a house is a full time business in itself. When I became a mum, I thought I would be home full time but after about 15 months I was exhausted, bored, depressed and isolated. When you have children, there is no community of neighbours, because everyone is out working. It’s a lonely time. ann-maree: My upbringing is a bit of a clash in some ways. My parents brought me up to be schooled and go to university and have a career and I travelled overseas but at the same time my mum and dad have old-fashioned views of mum being at home and my dad was a little put out when I didn’t change my name to my husband’s when I got married. It’s hard to keep everyone happy!

nd “Being a mum a is running a house ess a full time busin in itself.”

I had heard rave reviews about Cherry Blossom Tree, Mooloolaba so I was really looking forward to my lunch date with the ladies during my recent visit. Located on the bustling Brisbane Road, the Mooloolaba restaurant is the sister restaurant to the popular Cherry Blossom Tree at the Sunshine Plaza, Maroochydore.

profile: What is your secret to survival? Have you taken on extra help? ann-maree: I had to let go! Women tend to do everything and say yes to everything! I even ended up taking on a position at the soccer club because no one else could. I had to realise that it was ok if the house was untidy. I struggle with that because I like a clean house. I hired a house cleaner and I have a circle of girl friends who all help each other. mia: I think it’s important to remember that we are all in it together. Just when I think I am hopeless and not doing a good job with anything, someone else says, ‘don’t worry, I feel exactly the same!’ We are a sisterhood! cheryl: I have rules I live by to survive. My first rule is that I ad lib, I make things up as I go. I also break some rules! I parked on a yellow line outside the doctor surgery last week and I got a ticket and that’s ok. I shouldn’t have done it but sometimes you have to bend the rules to get by. My third rule is my children have to be happy. They come first. If they are stressed or not well, everything stops. I have three different babysitters for different situations. Resourcing is key and having good people around you. profile: Has technology made your life even busier? mia: I feel like I need it because I am only in the shop three days per week but I can still look at sales and things. But on my weekends off I switch my phone off. I read years ago the girls from Sass & Bide do that and I thought it was a really good rule. cheryl: I don’t have time for social media. I try and avoid it. Having little children brings you back to the here and now. I find it quite

The Mooloolaba restaurant was created to allow diners a more relaxed dining experience away from the hustle and bustle of the Plaza and is the only restaurant on the Coast to offer private tatami dining rooms. refreshing. I don’t mind missing out what my friends in Europe are putting on Facebook right now! ann-maree: Me either. We have a work Facebook account and I go on there and scan it. I have a personal one but I never look at it. profile: How can we learn to just stop? cheryl: I don’t stop until 8.30pm at night and think to myself, ‘wow, I haven’t sat down for five minutes today’. I really struggle to have any me time. mia: You have to make time for yourself and be committed to it. I make sure I have an hour to myself, it’s crucial for my mental health. Mind you, I had an MRI the other day (which is really noisy!) and nearly fell asleep! That is how tired I am. I was like ‘what do you mean it’s over?’! ana: I don’t know what it means to stop! My boyfriend recently took me away on a lovely trip to Hamilton Island and the first thing I did when we arrived was check that I had internet! So we compromised and he gave me an hour a day to do what I needed to do and it worked. It’s all about time management. There are not enough hours in the day, thank goodness for Berocca! Well said Ana. Perhaps that is the key. There are only so many hours in the day and us women need every second of it. The lesson I took away from spending time with these real, raw and honest women was that we are simply doing our best and our best has to be good enough. So three cheers to women, mums or otherwise, we rock!

Jeff now brings his expertise to Cherry Blossom Tree diners, creating mouthwatering dishes using only the freshest, local ingredients. On the day of our visit, we are treated to shitake and pumpkin croquette to start with – an explosion of intricate flavours, it was the beginning of what was a truly memorable dining experience. Entree consisted of a number of delicious and beautifully presented dishes to share including Kingfish Namasu, Salmon Namasu, Maki Moriawase and to accommodate our vegetarian guest, Agedashi Tofu. Just as we thought the dishes couldn’t get much better, the mains arrived and were equally as delicious. Including Tori Teriyaki (succulent slow cooked beef), Buta Bara (pork belly) and Macha Soba (a delicious vegetarian noodle option), each of the dishes were bursting with flavour and the extra detail that went into the presentation did not go unnoticed among the guests – neither did my terrible failure at trying to use chopsticks! But don’t worry forks are available for those of us who struggle! The setting was warm and inviting and the service attentive yet not intrusive and each dish was carefully explained to the guests as they arrived at the table. If you are keen to step outside your comfort zone and experience a little more of what Japanese cuisine is all about (aside from a quick takeaway sushi pack at lunch time), make sure you visit Cherry Blossom Tree. Recipe by www.igotpt.com CHIA SEEDS ARE AMONG THE HEALTHIEST FOODS ON THE PLANET. THEY ARE LOADED WITH NUTRIENTS THAT CAN HAVE IMPORTANT BENEFITS FOR YOUR BODY AND BRAIN ... AND THEY ARE AMONG THE FEW TRENDY “SUPERFOODS” THAT ARE ACTUALLY WORTHY OF THAT TERM!

Ingredients: •• ½ cup chia seeds •• 1 cup Meko coconut water •• ¾ cup frozen raspberries •• ½ cup light or full-fat coconut milk

•• Chia seeds are tiny black seeds from the plant Salvia Hispanica, which is related to mint. The plant grows natively in South America. •• Chia is the ancient Mayan word for strength. •• Chia seeds are known for the high amount of antioxidants they contain. •• Many health experts believe that chia seeds can help with weight loss. The fibre they contain absorbs large amounts of water and expands in the stomach, which should increase fullness and slow the absorption of food. •• Chia seeds are very high in the Omega-3 fatty acids.

O

ne of the truly amazing and greatly underrated holiday destinations is our very own South Australia. It’s one of those destinations that always seem to be on our radar for conversation but a lot of us never quite get around to locking

it in ... So, a few days in The Barossa, calling on some wineries and some local home style cooking was on the cards. Our choice of accommodation was a little blue stone cottage in Lyndoch, which provided some wonderful creature comforts and a great base to return to at the end of the day. An early destination was to the wonderful and very distinguished Rockford Wines on Krondorf Road. Affectionately known as Rockies amongst locals, the theme here is small batch production with dark fruit intensity with pure finesse. Specialising in Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, this cellar door is a must. Other well known wineries such as Grant Burge, St.Hallett’s and Charles Melton all share the same road. Heading through the township of Tanunda, there are a handful of great little cafes to stop by and enjoy some local produce such as The Red Door. Many South Australians are aficionados of great coffee and it’s not hard to find these enthusiasts around. Just outside of Tanunda is the historic Light Pass Road where a number of young boutique wineries have based themselves due to the high quality

of old vine Shiraz plantings in the area that has been divided up over the past one hundred years. Two names in particular to call and see are Gibson Wines and Maverick Wines respectively. Both wineries process well under 300 tonnes of fruit and produce stunning wines that reflect the quality of the Valley Floor superbly. A short drive heading northwest, will lead you into the districts of Seppeltsfield and Greenock. Famed amongst winemakers searching for some of the best fruit in The Barossa, quite a few generational growers who have turned to wine making have created a style akin to big, mouth filling wines that ooze pure class. Greenock Creek Winery, which is regarded as one of the most exceptional wineries in Australia under the Langton’s Classifications, produce wines that are seamless yet fruit generous and beautifully subtle. Producers of ultra premium Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon – no whites in sight here. Other worthy names in the area that provide a wonderful cellar door experience and premium examples of the districts wine are Kalleske Wines, Seppeltsfield Winery and the ever quirky Two Hands Winery. Remember that little blue stone cottage that I mentioned? It had a slow cooker filled with some local lamb shanks and vegetables with a fireplace waiting for us at the end of the day … Wine Discovery Workshops are held every month with Steve Street at Dan Murphy’s Kawana Store

t’s like an interaction; you should enjoy food like it’s a party, not just a formality.” Mikki’s Gourmet Food & Wine Bar owner and head chef Jake Pregnell’s approach to food and dining is as passionate as his focus on his new business. The Coast local is forging ahead in the game, buying into his own restaurant in one of the region’s most evolving dining landscapes. From the famous kitchens of one of Queensland’s top restaurants, the Spirit House, to being part of the opening team behind the launch of acclaimed Melbourne restaurant Golden Fields, Jake’s reputation has grown hotter and hotter. He kicked off his culinary career on the Coast, building experience in small cafes, before stepping into the Spirit House, where he continued an apprenticeship for more than two years. Now a chef for nine years, Jake also took out the Apprentice of the Year in Queensland in 2009, a remarkable achievement. And now, he is adding another hat to his chef’s whites with the recent takeover of Mikki’s Gourmet Food & Wine Bar. Impressively for someone in their mid-20s, Jake is both the owner and head chef, buying the restaurant with his sister, Alicia, and managing the front-of-house team, another chef, and two apprentices. Upon completing his own apprenticeship, Jake made the move from the Coast to Melbourne, landing a coveted position under multi-award winning chef Andrew McConnell of hugely popular Golden Fields restaurant in St Kilda. He spent more than three years in Melbourne, mostly working at Golden Fields, before “jumping around a bit” to see what else was out there. While working for renowned chefs including Neil Perry (Spice Temple) and Guillaume Brahimi, Jake explored the city, becoming inspired by the bustling appeal of the Melbourne laneways, where delicious, quality food and wine flowed through the maze of streets. Jake returned to his hometown on the Coast, and took a chef position at a Cotton Tree restaurant. Then, when the chance to purchase Mikki’s Gourmet Food & Wine Bar presented itself, Jake was more than ready to explore the idea of opening his own restaurant. 84

The result? A transformation of Mikki’s to a gourmet destination, with its polished timber fit out and culinary delights offering the ambience of an inner city laneway, tucked in coastal paradise. Mikki’s Gourmet Food & Wine Bar is now a hotspot for locals and visitors alike, popular with foodie reviewers and regularly rating highly on websites such as Urbanspoon. Jake’s next challenge is convincing local customers, used to more traditional fare, to taste his unique menu. Jake’s flair for Asian food offers up tempting dishes such as Asian-style share plates, delicious seafood combinations, speciality-concept presentation of main meals and holding six course degustations. “I create a different style of Asian that people are used to,” he says. “Food culture on the Coast is on its way up but still has a long way to go for sure. PROFILE EAT

Recipe supplied by Sammy and Bella, winners of My Kitchen Rules 2011, resident foodies on Channel 7’s The Morning Show, Home Cooking Experts for Lifestyle Food Channel, presenters of Food For Life on 4ME, and owners of Sammy and Bella Catering. If you’re having guests over for a dinner party, this dessert is fantastic because you can make everything the day before. The dessert is served in a stemless wine glass or martini glass, just cover with clingfilm and refrigerate overnight. Serves 4.

INGREDIENTS For the raisins: •• ½ Tbsp raisins •• ½ Tbsp amaretto or brandy For the candied orange: •• ½ orange •• 50g caster sugar •• ¼ cup water •• extra caster sugar, to dust For the mousse: •• 1 egg white •• pinch cream of tartar •• 60g caster sugar •• 190g thickened cream •• 100g light sour cream •• 190g light cream cheese •• 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped •• soaked raisins, from above To arrange: •• 120g amaretti biscuits •• 2 Tbsp poppy seeds

METHOD

Soak the raisins in amaretto for at least a few hours until they plump. Remove sour cream and cream cheese from the fridge and allow to come to room temperature (one hour or so). For the candied orange, peel the orange taking care to avoid the white pith and then julienne the peel. Place in a small saucepan along with 50g caster sugar and water on low-medium heat. Continue to cook until the water has evaporated and the dissolved sugar starts to caramelise with a light golden colour (we’re looking for a hard crack stage). Place extra caster sugar on a plate and gently remove the candied orange from the pot with a fork, allowing some of the caramel to drip off. Place orange on the sugar plate and toss through the sugar, separating the strands (try not to touch with your bare hands as it’s very hot! Use two forks instead). Allow to cool. For the mousse. Place egg white and cream of tartar in a clean bowl/stand mixer and whip, slowly adding the caster sugar until it has fully dissolved november 2014

and stiff peaks form (it should have a shiny meringue-like texture). Transfer the meringue to a second large bowl. Next in the same stand mixer bowl, place thickened cream inside and whip until stiff peaks form, then transfer to the 2nd large bowl along with the meringue. Next, place room temperature light sour cream, cream cheese and vanilla seeds in the stand mixer bowl and whip until smooth, then also place it in the second large bowl. Add raisins and any leftover amaretto to the second bowl. Now, take a large whisk and very gently fold everything together until combined, taking care not to deflate the mixture too much. To arrange the dessert, coarsely crumble amaretti biscuits into the base of a stemless wine or martini glass. Top with mousse mixture and gently tap on the bench top to smooth out the top. Top with candied orange and a sprinkle of poppyseeds. Refrigerate for at least two hours before serving, or if overnight cover with cling film.

rom the time she was a young girl, Erin Bacchi was always expressing herself creatively. She says “Throughout my life, art has always been my passion. From crayons to pencils, paint splatters to hobby glue, I was always creating – a messy, colourful task could always turn into something amazing”. Now in her twenties and with a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Based Art and Design she finds herself dividing her time between working as a creative graphic designer and working on her much loved art. Her paintings have a unique and very definite style. Strong, bold brush strokes are layered thickly across the canvas in precise and defined lines and contours emphasising the palette of colours and bringing her artworks to life. Each of her paintings feature her distinctive cross hatch signature style and clearly state who the artist is.

Throughout my life, art has always been my passion.” She delves between the natural world and the imaginary world for inspiration. Animals and wildlife feature strongly and are brought to attention through a warm, earthy palette of colours and tones. Deers and foxes, usually timid and quiet creatures, take on a bold new persona thanks to her strong impasto-like brushstrokes. In contrast, characters from story books and comic books boldly come into play through a vibrant rainbow of shades. Erin’s colourful works have caught the eye of many private collectors across the United Kingdom and America, where she lived while working in boutique design agencies and indulged her passion for creativity. She says “Living overseas was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had, meeting people from around the globe has definitely influenced me and my artwork”. More recently, she was commissioned by Integrale Homes to create art which is on display in their sales display homes. In addition, her art can be found on consignment in numerous cafes and private collections around the Sunshine Coast. With two solo exhibitions under her belt, the first at Cafe Envy in Mooloolaba, the second at Solbar in Maroochydore, Erin is focused on more exhibitions in the future. And with plans to move to Sydney to sait her thirst for new experiences, Erin’s sure to make as much of an impact there as she has on the Coast.

poiling her clients and creating beautiful hairstyles is a trait Rachael Little is well known for in Marcoola at her salon Ruby Blue Hair Boutique. The 34-year-old is the creative force behind the salon’s success, having worked in the hairdressing industry for the past 14 years and earning her numerous state and national awards, it’s easy to see why her business has come so far. Originally from Brisbane, Rachael started her career in hairdressing at the age of 20, leaving behind a job in retail management. “I started my career in a boutique salon in Norman Park. I was fortunate enough to have been trained by the senior staff who had careers spanning Melbourne, the UK and New Zealand,” shares Rachael. “I consider myself very lucky to have been a part of a great team which won many industry awards throughout my apprenticeship years.” Inspired by her superiors, Rachael realised she wanted more than to be just a stylist. “I wanted to do more within the industry and I have very firm ideas on service and skills and training.” It was not long before she was opening her own successful hair and beauty salon in Redlands, which while she was at the helm won many local business awards and has since been nominated for a Hall of Fame award. After a while though, everybody needs a sea change, and together with husband Matt and their three boys, Rachael made the move to the Sunshine Coast in 2013, taking her hair experience and desire for business with her. She opened Ruby Blue Hair Boutique in January 2014, ready to transform the industry on the Sunshine Coast. “What I love most about my job is the ability to transform a client from drab to fab! It's the highlight of my day when I see someone leave the salon with their new 'do' and a new swagger to boot!” Rachael says. With huge career achievements, including winning The Goldwell Cut Colour Style National Men’s Award two years in a row as well as winning The Redlands Retail Awards for Best Hairdressing Salon for the past three years, Rachael certainly is living up to her reputation as a creative force.

ALI BRODERICK

D

edicated midwife Ali Broderick has been supporting women in their journey to becoming a mother for over a decade. “I’ve been a midwife since I was 21, I started university when I was 18 to be a midwife and that’s all I’ve ever done,” Ali shares. Ali subsequently studied and worked in midwifery in Newcastle, England, where she originates from. She moved to Australia with her husband and two young sons over four years ago, after they fell in love with the area on a holiday. Today, she is a Coast local, and laughingly admits she is a soccer mum at heart as she supports her growing boys at their local rugby games. The bubbly blonde left midwifery in the hospital sector to join forces with three other Coast midwives to bring My Midwives to the Sunshine Coast, which launched in May earlier this year. “Being a midwife for 12 years and then stepping out into business is a big learning curve for us all and something I never thought I would do. It’s pretty exciting and pretty daunting at the same time!” Her drive? A desire to support the mothers-to-be. “I just love inspiring women to find that inner strength within themselves to know that they can give birth, and to help them have a great experience,” she smiles. “It’s just such a great privilege to be at a birth and be with the families.” Ali speaks from personal experience about her driving motivator to support expectant women. “I had really bad post natal depression and I don’t want other people to have it … my main focus is to really support the people after they’ve had the baby,” she says. “It just shows that even midwives can have a bumpy start sometimes. If we don’t talk about these sort of things then nothing ever changes.” And Ali intends to instigate change, as she continues her work as a midwife, sharing her passion and knowledge. “We work with a lot with students and feel quite passionate about supporting the new generation of midwives.”

rom a science degree and working at the Great Barrier Reef to becoming a social media guru on the Sunshine Coast, Zoe Wyatt sure has done it all when it comes to career highlights. The 43-year-old mother of two, step mother of three and nanna of three, says she stumbled across a career in internet marketing out of pure desperation, after her husband Mark’s business went under in 2002. She moved from the rat-race to the Sunshine Coast and says she made friends with women who ‘challenged her to step up’. Soon after, her business Social Media ShortCut was born, aimed at gearing businesses with the right social media marketing tools to succeed. Social Media ShortCut now has clients in seven countries and has become a global business. Along with social media management and training, Zoe and her team provide a full suite of social media design, strategy, system setup and advertising services. This month, Profile catches up with the savvy social media guru to discover how her success has come to be. Life changing milestone 1: December 1990. Graduated university. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology major) was a milestone not just for me but for my entire family. I was lucky to have an incredibly close and supportive family that encouraged me to reach for my dreams. My degree led immediately to a role with The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and my career was launched. I had grown up in a family business but I chose the structure of a government role. The opportunities this afforded me were many and varied, but later I would realise the structure was not one that my ‘hard wired’ entrepreneurial brain would cope with in the longer term. Life changing milestone 2: November 1993 and September 1995. The birth of my children. “Mothers and their children are in a category all their own. There’s no bond so strong in the entire world. No love so instantaneous and forgiving.” — Gail Tsukiyama. I now know you don’t truly appreciate your mum until you become one! I had my children early and they became my life. Overnight my priorities changed and this ‘career woman’ suddenly had a new focus. Finding a way to make money and still spend time with my babies led me to roles in a casino, with the Australian Tax Office and trying nearly every ‘party plan’ and network marketing / home business possible. Life changing milestone 3: May 2000. Kissed the love of my life for the first time. This was not only life changing but completely

turned my life upside down. I had two small children from a previous marriage and had reached a point in my life where I was completely focused on ‘existing’. My now husband, Mark Wyatt, swept me off my feet, and challenged me to open up to the possibilities of life as part of a blended family. Our combined family of five are proof that love really can conquer all. Life changing milestone 4: January 2003. Started my first internet marketing business. I was looking for ways to supplement our income, to feed our large family after Mark had lost control of his company. Like a number of key moments in my life, it was through desperation that I discovered opportunity. I didn’t realise it at the time, but starting a ‘small, supplemental’ income business would completely change my life course. I excelled in the business and grew to a leadership and training role with our largest supply company. I have always loved teaching and inspiring others. This business gave me the opportunity to assist team members to grow their income through teaching them marketing. This love of teaching others what I was doing to succeed with online marketing led to my new role in social media. I was being asked more and more about my social media marketing methods and eventually created a website, and online training course, to make it easier to show others exactly what I was doing to achieve such success with my marketing. I had turned to the internet for our advertising out of desperation to be honest (as we had no money

to advertise) but, again, out of desperation came opportunity, and my new business Social Media ShortCut. Life changing milestone 5: December 2005. Moved to the Sunshine Coast. Mark was from Brisbane and I was born and bred in Townsville, North Queensland. We had spent several years juggling work, lives and children between the two places (often living apart to do so). At the end of 2005, we sold up everything and made a decision about exactly where we ‘wanted’ to live. Our answer was the Sunshine Coast. Close enough to Brisbane to be near the older children but far enough away to give lifestyle choices for us and the younger children. I didn’t know it at the time, but we had also selected one of Australia’s greatest entrepreneurial hot spots. I quickly made friends with inspirational women that challenged me to ‘step up’. One of these, Yvette Adams, offered me a role training in social media. Our common business ethics were obvious from our first coffee meeting and I have been a consultant with The Creative Collective ever since. I continue to grow Social Media ShortCut while training and contracting for a variety of companies, agencies and clients. It’s a long way from a marine biology degree to training Australia’s leading social media marketers, but I’m now finding opportunity without the drive of desperation. I love where I live, I love my family, I love my business and I love the fact every day in every way it’s all getting better and better. profilemag.com.au

asa Di Natura, aptly translated to ‘House of Nature’ in Italian, is an über-exclusive luxury relaxation destination tucked away in beautiful Flaxton. Set on eight acres of rainforest and bushland, the property is breathtaking. A slow drive down a winding road fringed by Jacaranda trees teases with glimpses of the surrounding hinterland as the foliage grows thicker, gradually cutting off the buzz of traffic and noise until the sounds of wildlife and the aroma of hinterland vegetation is all that is left to fill your senses. From the beautiful location to the fusion with nature, Casa Di Natura is the ultimate experience to indulge in total tranquillity. With a choice of massages to full-body treatments, and a range of healing therapies to heal and empower, the team of qualified therapists are able to custom-design a package to suit your individual needs, from mums and daughters to baby showers, and can be as hands-on or as discreet as required. The variety of natural treatments on offer includes time-out in the

magnesium swimming pool or bubble beds, a FAR infrared sauna and a non-bleach/non-chlorine hydrotherapy spa. Feel empowered and reconnected after a Bodytalk session (a system of connection to the unconscious mind), get pampered with a facial and pedicure, or find balance with a full-body Reiki massage – the list is endless! Wash away the stress of life with an immersion in the magnesium water, the surface only broken by the drops of the trickling water feature, as you lose yourself to the rainforest view. The green lawn, overlooked by the outdoor patio, arcs away from the pool setting to blend with the tangle of dewy trees filled with bird chatter that forms the amazing natural amphitheatre. It is the epitome of relaxation, and between treatments, you can follow the lush green grass down to the rainforest to soak up the essence of nature, complete with waterfall, running creek, and walking track. Back inside, the two massage and pamper rooms are a fusion of spirituality and decadence, with the Moonlight Room a darkened haven complete with

divine-smelling natural oils, soothing music and plush massage beds, while sunlight streams into the Sunlight Room, reflecting off the pristine pamper stations. Casa Di Natura’s policy is ‘one booking only’ – so whether you are treating yourself to some alone time or are part of a big group, your booking will be the only one there for complete solitude and privacy. The treatments are made that little more unique by the strong presence and inclusion of nature, which owner Sue says amplifies healing for dramatic results. “Here, I watch people leave with a light in their eye,” she shares. As I leave for the drive back to the office, with thoughts of the tinkling sound of the magnesium pool swirling, along with the soft chirp of birds and the sound of the gentle breeze bringing the bush to life, I feel rejuvenated and yes, I have a light in my eyes. It is a beautiful sanctuary – a day spa that is unrivalled in my view. Where else can you go these days to be completely alone?

“A fusion of spirituality and decadence”

Meet the owner:

Arriving at Casa Di Natura, you are greeted by sue Broughton, Director. Warm and welcoming, her effervescence is in complete harmony with the retreat’s core, and it is evident that without her compelling history, Casa Di Natura wouldn’t be the special type of haven that it is. Sue has over 30 years experience as a massage therapist, but with a very strong business sense, Sue has always had a presence in business corporations. After spending years absorbed in the native cultures of Africa, Thailand and Nepal working as a volunteer, Sue developed an understanding and empathy for suffering, abuse and life-and-death situations. “I came back home with a drive to learn everything I could about energy work and how to heal with the mind and hand,” she shares. After her return to Australia, Sue struggled

november 2013

with assimilating to the corporate world which she describes as an “obsession with nothing meaningful”, and moved to the construction industry while running her own massage and beauty empire. Her passion for educating culminated with her establishing a major training division in the field, and her innovative ideas saw her deliver training as far afield as England. However, Sue and her partner Marco, living in Tasmania at the time, had a long-held dream of living on the Sunshine Coast. The first property they saw was the site that now holds Casa Di Natura. “There was a peace with this property,” Sue remembers. They worked on their acreage until they had perfected it as a slice of paradise, creating the unique fusion of day spa and training facility that is Casa Di Natura. Opening two years ago, they now welcome clients from all over

Australia, New Zealand and Europe. The walls of the spa’s office are adorned with certificates of Sue’s many qualifications, ranging from a Certificate IV in Small Business to a Diploma of Kinesiology, adding to her credentials of being a registered training organisation, with the introduction of training for Certificate IV in Reiki and Bodytalk, an upcoming phase. Sue’s devotion to helping others realise their potential has given her a seat on the Hinterland Tourism Executive Committee, along with an informal mentorship of local small business owners. Sue also provides sponsorship for young women in hardship so that they may educate themselves, and employs local small businesswomen as her beauty therapists. “Women work well with women,” she says. “Our therapists are real women. They care, nurture and are good at what they do.”

PROFILE THE LAST WORD

DANIEL WEST

PHOTOGRAPHY ALAIN BOUVIER

Daniel West began his market life as a nine-year-old entrepreneur selling hand-decorated pet rocks in Eumundi. Now, he has returned to the iconic Eumundi Markets to take on the role of market manager, having spent the last 15 years in Brisbane working in the tourism and travel sectors and managing metropolitan markets and events. “I love the buzz of the markets, the colour and vibrancy, and the sense of camaraderie between stallholders. It’s an “office” like no other,” he says. Profile catches up with Daniel to get the inside goss on his market life!

I laugh out loud when … my children’s honesty touches on the socially sensitive issues.

I grew up in … the markets! As a market kid you have such a wonderful and diverse family to learn from and grow with.

When I was growing up I wanted to be … an actor, but later I realised I just wanted to be as good a dad as mine was to me.

The first thing I do when I wake up is … turn music on, find coffee, then turn the music up.

My all time favourite movie is … hard to decide between The Princess Bride, Spaceballs and every James Bond film ever made.

If I could be better at anything it would be … spelin! I am at my happiest when … I’m being a kid with my kids. When I am not working I am … thinking, creating, inventing, designing, building, developing, improving, supporting, helping … and probably thinking about work.

I couldn’t live without … my wife and kids … or cheesecake. My greatest achievement is … 10 months of fundraising for the burns ward at Royal Brisbane Hospital. My most annoying habit is … telling dad jokes!

I wish I could … make everyone happy (I’ll never stop trying).

I laugh out loud when … my children’s honesty touches on the socially sensitive issues.

The best meal I have had was at … Wasabi, Noosa.

My hidden talent is … dancing (not sure why the world doesn’t agree?)

When I go on holiday I like to … eat, drink, sleep, repeat. Most people don’t know that I … can juggle knives, make amazing pasta dishes and DJ old school vinyl … just not all at the same time.
