kay, time for me to be upfront. Ah, it feels good to get it off my chest. I have been spending my time with another. It’s not you … it’s me. I promise! Yes, of course I still love you – with all my heart, in fact. It’s just that I have been a bit busy lately, and she, well, she was my first true love and she was beckoning me with those gorgeous blue skies and rugged rainforest … yes, I am talking about Tropical North Queensland. As you read our 34th issue of Sunshine Coast profile magazine – my beautiful magazine that recently turned three – my second magazine is launching in the far north. Welcome TNQ profile magazine! Launching a sister publication is a massive step for me. I am throwing caution to the wind in a market that is doing it tough, battling a decline in tourism numbers and is still in recovery mode after Cyclone Yasi blew in with gusto earlier this year. But throw me a challenge and I see only opportunity. This is my chance to connect with the Tropical North and toss a little bit of profile inspiration their way! It is a region that I lived in for many years – it is beautiful and warm (both the temperature and the people) so I look forward to sharing my time between my two loves. And to help me with this expansion mode are my two new business partners; the ever-lovable, witty wordsmith Alli Grant, who has been by my side since profile’s inception, and Hamish Rose … yes, a boy! The profile women have opened up their arms and welcomed former PRIME radio station general manager, Hamish, into the family. We are excited to benefit from Hamish’s vast media knowledge (and his

youthful enthusiasm!). This issue of profile is one of my favourites. It is the mark of exciting times, but it is also a showcase of some of the most inspiring Sunny Coast locals you could find. Take our stunning cover girl, Nadine Sullivan, for example. Nadine brims with bubbling energy. She has an effervescent personality and a gorgeous, big smile. Many of us would take it for granted that Nadine has always lived a blessed, happy life … this issue we take a closer look behind the smile and find that this positive, confident woman actually struggled with years of agoraphobia, anorexia, and an anxiety disorder. Read Jessica Jane Sammut’s moving interview on page 26 and get to know the real Nadine. We also chat with Jacqui Dean, founder of STEMM whose mission is to encourage and inspire teenage mums to restore their self-worth; Daniel Calder who is leading a strong group of choralists into the international arena, and our very-own advocate for Nambour, Greg Biggs, a man who is certainly always McHappy. So as we spread our wings and head north, please know that we couldn’t have done it without you. The Sunshine Coast will always have a special place in my heart – there is room in my life for both my true loves!

This month we wanted to achieve a candid shot of our cover person Nadine. She donned gorgeous, oversized snuggy jumpers from Italia Boutiques 2011 Winter collection, and Mark Cotterell jewels (what a combination!) and was at home in front of the camera. Our photographer, Alan Hughes, shot Nadine with a soft light to produce a tonal background with soft shadows. Art direction for the shoot was produced by our creative director Kara de Schot, and makeup and hair by Daniella Saville and Joshua Gurnick of Kooshka, Buderim.

do us part ll photography ben stone With high divorce rates rampant throughout the world, is marriage still the silver lining and the epitome of everlasting love? Does it really go together like a horse and carriage or is it just an antiquated concept in today’s modern world? A
h marriage ... what a wonderful invention. Then again, so is the Slush Puppy machine. Ever since I can remember I always wanted to grow up, become a stuntman, maybe play cricket for Australia, pash a girl and have a family. My first kiss was at a blue light disco in 1988, to Phil Collins’ song Groovy Kind Of Love. The girl’s name was Tiffani, she was an American exchange student and I bribed her with Passion Pop and Alpine ciggies. From that moment, I knew chicks were most excellent. In fact, from then on I loved girls so much I married one. When I married my wife, Michelle, we got hitched for better or for worse, ’til death do we party. She was three months’ pregnant at the time. On the day of my wedding I remember telling my dad, John, that I was scared, and in typical dad fashion he rolled out his entire repertoire of wedding jokes before saying, “What do you mean you’re scared? Son, you don’t know the meaning of the word fear until you’re married. You’ve found Miss Right, my boy, but I bet you didn’t know her first name was Always,” he quipped. “You know your mother and I were happy for 20 years, then we met. Marriage is all about give and take. You had better give, because she’ll take it anyway.” I’ve been married for 10 years now and over the years Dad has delighted us all with his running commentary on the institution of marriage. But one of the greatest things about marriage is that it starts with a wedding, a special ceremony celebrated with love, devotion and free beer. The great thing about my wife is she knows everything about me, and yet she loves me just the same. In my experience over the last decade, you only need two things for a successful marriage: an ace sense of humour and a short memory. Marriage; I’d highly recommend you get one.
S
melly and stupid. That’s how I described all husbands when I was seven. I remember I turned to Mum and asked her where the husband shop was located. I went on to declare that I never ever wanted to buy a husband, but I was in fact curious where the shop was so I could avoid it. My beautiful mother just smiled wisely with that knowing look in her eye. Then I grew up and proceeded to date every dirtbag under the sun. There was the serial cheater, the stingy but good-looking guy, the life of the party, the older business man and the guy who refused to wear deodorant. Yes, a regular group of Romeos. There was a vet, a morgue worker, a detective, a teacher, a plumber ... and the list goes on, and on. I did not discriminate. There were even a few proposals along the bumpy journey. For three decades I was not interested in getting married, nor did I understand why anyone would want to. I was a serious cynic. Just when I was ready to move to Paris to pick flowers, I met and married my Prince Charming. It was exactly 30 years after I had that candid conversation with my mum. Maybe I grew up? Maybe I mellowed? I am not sure, but it just seemed so right. A few short months later we celebrated with a festival-themed wedding. Now, I do realise that marriage is not about the pretty white dress and the party, but it is just a damned fabulous added benefit. So now I am a total convert when it comes to marriage. I guess I finally got over my commitment issues and realised that marriage can be the coolest thing in the world. Nothing makes me more proud than when he introduces me as his wife and it is a total bonus that he is not smelly or stupid.

The Sunshine Coast hosts a plethora of entrepreneurs and business leaders who have shaped our great region and inspired us all to achieve. Each month we meet and feature an outstanding business person; we find out what makes them tick, what gets them out of bed every day and of course, find out what car they drive. This month we chat to local property developers Terry and Dianne Marsay to find out why choosing their BMW came down to shopping and the grandchildren.
My first car was … a 289 V8 Ford station wagon and my wife’s was a white V W beetle.
Meeting this month’s business drivers ... TERRY AND DIANNE MARSAY What car are you driving? We have a BMW 335i convertible. What inspired you to purchase your BMW? I was looking for a car that would replace my wife’s much-loved seven-yearold Honda. She fell in love with this style of BMW as it had back seats for the grandchildren but was still a sports car. There’s plenty of room for shopping bags, and being a hard-top convertible, the choice was easy to make. Why do you love it? Too many reasons. It’s such a beautiful, safe car to drive. The motor in this model is happy to just drive around town but on the highway the ease of stability and speed makes it such a pleasure to drive. What is your favourite feature of the car? It would have to be the convertible hard-top roof, which operates internally or by key externally. The engineering is amazing. It certainly turns heads when in operation. The heated seats are pretty good as well.

terry marsay My secret to success is … never be scared to have a go at your ambitions, as a failure can also be counted as success. The greatest lesson I have learnt in business is … never lose interest. You can quite easily become tired of the monotony of day-to-day running but keep trying new ideas, no matter how small, as it makes it more interesting not only for yourselves but for your staff too. If I had my time over, I would … maybe learn to take a little more family time as life is far too short. My mentor is … people in general who have made a success out of business, but who also know the importance of marriage and family. I believe in … honesty and integrity between each other but also in all business dealings. We both sleep very well at night. My first job was … my wife worked in a pharmacy and I began in the meat industry. My first car was … a 289 V8 Ford station wagon and my wife’s was a white VW beetle. I love the Sunshine Coast because … of the magnificent lifestyle, beaches, climate and proximity to shops, entertainment etcetera. On the weekend you will find me … fishing or dodging my wife’s job list. My passion is … enjoying family, travelling and the ease of coastal living.

I hated sport. I wanted to sing and play the piano.”
the music man
words jessica jane sammut ll photography lou o’brien
Conductor Daniel Calder is leading his choir, Oriana, to international success.
Who has a swag of trophies, a great talent and an international tour booked into his diary? Yes, Daniel Calder, musical director and choral conductor extraordinaire. What this man has achieved music-wise for the Sunshine Coast deserves a medal in itself, as profile’s Jessica Jane Sammut finds out.
C
an you feel a beat? Can you pitch a note? Many of us can’t. Music is a sense which the lucky are born with. Yes, you can learn technique, but you cannot teach someone to hear the difference between singing flat or in key. As an avid lover of music, and someone who is very influenced by music whether it be a loud dance track on a sunny Saturday afternoon, or a beautiful piece of opera while sipping red wine and cooking dinner of a weeknight, I am fascinated by those who create music, living and breathing it as if it were a part of themselves.

Meet Daniel Calder. He is one of the talented few. Ipswich born, Daniel was the black sheep of the family. Growing up as the baby to two older brothers and an older sister, Daniel was expected to follow the path carved out by his elder siblings. Sport was their thing, and they were very good at it too. But Daniel did not share this ambition. “I loved music, not sport and my family could not understand this,” he winces. “Dad was a good soccer player and boxer in his day. My brothers were good at soccer. I hated it. I wanted to sing and play the piano.”
profilemag.com.au
view So sing and play the piano he did. At only three years old, Daniel took part in his local Eisteddfod, singing Little Bo Peep, and he won the competition hands-down. “To me, music was and still is a part of my DNA. I spent my childhood singing and playing the piano; these were my instruments of choice. I got involved in any choirs I could.” So it wasn’t surprising when Daniel decided he wanted to be a music teacher when he grew up, combining music with his other love, teaching. Daniel took up his first position at John Paul College, Brisbane, moving to Marist College, Ashgrove, after a year, but all did not go as planned. “After four years at Marist teaching music, I found I was losing my love of it; teaching music in a school was killing my passion. Music was becoming a chore. It was not creative. I realised something had to change.” So what did Daniel do? Run off and become a rock star, or take-off around the world with nothing but a guitar in his back pocket? No, Daniel cleverly realised that all he needed to do was separate his love of music from his love of teaching, and so this was what he did, taking a position as a general primary school teacher in Ipswich and continuing his music via his choir work, and his choir work meant everything to him. While Daniel was at university and forging his career (which keeps most us busy enough), he took an active part in the Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir (formed in 1886), where he started off in a singing role and then became deputy conductor. Daniel accompanied the head conductor, helping him to teach the choir and assisting him with other choirs, all the while learning what it took to make a good choir great. When Daniel was just 21 (in his first year of teaching), the head conductor left the Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir and Daniel was offered his position which put him in charge of 120 adult choristers. He rose to the challenge within the blink of an eye. Four years later, he was asked to take over the Caloundra Chorale as main conductor, so he left his beloved Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir and took the small, unestablished Caloundra choir under his wing. When he began in October 2001, it had 30 members. By January 2002, three months later, it had more than 80 voices. Twelve months after this, he led the choir to victory by winning the Queensland Eisteddfod, going on to gloriously smash the Eisteddfod again in 2005. It was after this, Daniel decided to form his very own choral group, The Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir, and it is this which has catapulted him onto the world stage. “I wanted to form an elite choir on the Sunshine Coast consisting of high-end experienced choristers who had to audition to achieve a place in the choir,” Daniel explains. “I was ambitious and wanted to reach for the stars, undertaking some heavy choral works with people who could sing them. I love the Sunshine Coast and I wanted to give it this opportunity. “Oriana started as a fledgling group and grew from there. I limited the membership to 70 and went for quality not quantity. When we were only four months old, the ABC had a national choral competition and we came
second in the state final. It was the sign of things to come. Since then, we have won the 2009 and 2011 Queensland Eisteddfods, been awarded ‘Champion Choir’ status, and have been invited to go to Wales for the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod next year. To be asked to attend the International Eisteddfod has been such an almighty honour as only choirs of an international standard have been asked to compete. The prize is ‘The Pavarotti Choir of the World Trophy’.” Not only that, Oriana has also been invited to sing in London at St. Paul’s Cathedral and at St. Martin’s in the Field, and even had St. Martin’s flex its very important diary around Oriana to make sure it could attend. Oriana will continue with a UK and European tour. Truly impressive. I am excited for Oriana and I am thrilled for Daniel. Here is a conductor who is making his mark on the world. Here is a dreamer whose dream is being realised. Here is a down-to-earth primary school teacher who, when asked what gets him out of bed in the morning says, “the thought of spending the day with the kids in my class”. He deserves all the luck in the world. From winning that Eisteddfod as a three-year-old, he is now representing Australia with his own choir on an international scale and is acknowledged as one of Queensland’s leading choral conductors. It just goes to show what can be achieved when we commit to our passions.

IF YOU THINK SOME DAYS ARE TOUGH AT WORK, TRY DOING JACQUELYN DEANE’S JOB. AS THE FOUNDER OF STEMM, JACQUI DEALS WITH DISADVANTAGED TEENAGERS EACH DAY, BUT WOULDN’T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY, AS olivia smith FINDS OUT.
P
arenting; it is a tricky task. There is no handbook and no qualifying exam. In fact, anyone can have a baby if they are physically able, and this power to procreate is for some the only thing they feel they are good at, as Jacquelyn Deane knows only too well. Raised in a loving family to parents who were always involved in community organisations, Jacqui grew up with a strong social conscience. “Mum was always wanting to help others; often I would get home from school to find an Aboriginal child staying with us. Dad was involved in Rotary, Apex and the Lions. We were a very hands-on family and I had such positive role models in this regard.” As such, Jacqui grew up with the ability and desire to help others and graduated from Kelvin Grove Teacher’s College in 1989 as a secondary business and maths teacher, taking a post at Burnside High School in Nambour. In 1991, Jacqui met her husband and went on to have three very wanted and very cherished children Madelyn, Lachlan and Alexander. And it was when she was pregnant with Alex that she became close to a year nine student in her

maths class who was also pregnant. It was not the first time Jacqui had seen her students become pregnant at such a young age. In fact, once the pregnancies progressed, she often found she never saw those students again as they slipped out of the system, but it was this thought that suddenly angered Jacqui and she felt passionate about doing something to stop it. “It was so sad to me that my pregnancy was celebrated and congratulated while my year nine student’s pregnancy was condemned and criticised. She didn’t know any better and life wasn’t going to get any easier for her unless something was done. She had no family and her partner was in year 10; what hope did they have? She wanted to continue with her education but she couldn’t, it was too hard.” In 2006, soon after Alexander was born, Jacquelyn set about getting her campaign underway. “It was not easy. I approached numerous educational facilities who knocked me back, again and again. They did not want to be associated with teenage pregnancies. Finally, the principal at Beerwah High School agreed. people a young mothers program out of a shed attached to the school. At first, it was great. However, it soon became clear we didn’t have any resources or rooms in which to teach. We needed to teach properly, so the search began again for something more substantial.” In March 2008, the Burnside principal, Kerri Dunn, offered to help the group, agreeing it could operate from the school. Supporting Teenagers with Education, Mothering and Mentoring (STEMM) was born, a multi-awardwinning program supporting pregnant girls and young mothers in a safe, non-judgemental environment. “It is so sad for some of these young women,” Jacqui explains. “Many of them choose to get pregnant because they crave love. For them, it is a legitimate role they can play in society, when they have been told in their childhoods they will amount to nothing. Many of these kids have suffered abuse and domestic violence in their past also; the stories I hear are heart-wrenching. STEMM helps break this cycle through caring and education. “The trend is that girls disengage from school in approximately year nine, and they become lost – feeling they have no place in the world. They then make a choice to become pregnant. STEMM is working to prevent the trend and reduce the impact of the trend via its dual mothering and educational role. I aim to provide a family environment which some of these young women have never encountered. Where can you learn to be a mum if you have not had a positive role model in your life? I wanted to give the girls a safe place to go where they are surrounded by people who have a desire to help them. By educating a mother, you educate a family. We have 45 girls currently being educated and nurtured with us. “I do it not just for the mums, but also for the babies. By empowering these young mums you are not only improving their lives but also their children’s lives.” Jacqui brought a tear to my eye in her compassion for these teenage mums and their babies. As a mother myself, I cannot imagine what these young women have gone through, raging against the world with their defences built high. With Jacqui having been invited to go to Canberra to sit on the consultation panel advising on how best to help our teenagers, she is certainly having an impact, and one with so many ramifications. The woman in front of me who radiates a maternal warmth even I can sense, is changing the course of lives, of generations of lives. From a teacher, she has gone that one step further to reaching out of the mainstream and across to those on the fringes; a rescue operation of sorts. Jacqui is creating the handbook of parenting that doesn’t exist – and what does it say? Love and education.
Many young women choose to get pregnant because they crave love.”

reg Biggs is a man after my own heart. He is a go-getter who’s not afraid to put his head down to achieve his goals. He understands that nothing happens without a bit of blood, sweat and commitment, and he knows that the secret behind any successful business or any thriving community is its people. Born in Nambour in 1958, Greg looks young for his age. “I keep fit,” he smiles when I compliment him. “In fact, I just ran the Gold Coast half-marathon last month.” Greg grew up in a very pioneering atmosphere, with his parents running the family business, Day and Grimes, which had various arms in furniture, hardware, real estate and travel. In fact, Day and Grimes Real Estate Agency still exists and operates today from the same location in Nambour, as it did 75 years ago. When he finished high school in Nambour, Greg had a short stint working at the fruit shop before joining the family business in the travel department of Day and Grimes in Gympie. “After 12 months, I was transferred back to the Nambour branch and from there on, I was on the move. I worked in Maroochydore, Noosa, Gladstone and Rockhampton and then in 1982, when I was 24, I packed my bags and headed to America with two mates,” Greg grins clearly remembering. “We had a fantastic time, in fact too much of a good time! We didn’t work and we ran out of money. I missed my girlfriend, Robyn, who I had parted ways with when I had left Australia, and after four months of being in the States, I asked her to come and join me, which she did. I proposed to her in Los Angeles. A year later we married.” When Greg returned to Australia, Day and Grimes had been bought out by a new company and their head office had been relocated to Brisbane, so Greg and Robyn set up home there. A year later, they opened their own travel agency with a partner, and business was booming. “It was a great time. People were travelling, Robyn and I got to see a lot of the world together and we also managed to find the time to have two sons, Todd and Jake.” However, just as things were booming, a new concept known as the world wide web intervened. “It was the mid-1990s and people were starting to gain their own information on travel destinations and find alternative ways of booking via the net,” says Greg. “The competition became fierce. I realised the web was going to change the travel industry forever. It was going to be a very hard arena in which to survive. So we sold the business and started to look at other opportunities. “I realised the travel industry was really the business of ‘people’ – giving people what they needed in terms of service and product, and keeping the people who worked for me happy. I figured this applied to any industry, particularly hospitality. So when an opportunity to start a McDonald’s in Nambour came up, I jumped at the chance.” After a rigorous nine-month interview process (including facing a board of 14 or so people in Sydney), Greg was finally accepted as a franchisee and started his 12-month training program in an existing branch where he had to

learn the ropes. In late 1996, after 13 years in Brisbane, Greg moved back to his beloved Nambour, opening his own McDonald’s a year later. Since then, he has taken over a second McDonald’s in Coolum Beach. “I now employ 230 people across the two restaurants. I love it,” Greg beams. “The first person who came to work for me at Nambour at 15 years old is now the store manager there. It gives me a great buzz to see these kids grow and achieve, and it keeps me young. The business has been very kind to us.” What Greg is too modest to say is that he has not only been successful with his business ventures, but he also sits at the grass roots of the Nambour community. He takes an active part in the Nambour Alliance and the Nambour Ambulance Committee and together with the other Sunshine Coast McDonald’s franchisees, he is a long-term sponsor of the Mudjimba Island Charity Swim. He is also a major sponsor of the Sunshine Coast Football Association, a supporter of school chaplains via ‘McChappy Day’ and a keen advocate of the Ronald McDonald House Charity, hoping there will be such a facility on the Coast one day. Greg is, in addition, heavily involved with the wonderful work of the Hear and Say Centre in Nambour, with the charity being one of the leading paediatric auditory-verbal and cochlear implant centres in the world. Greg’s father even initiated the building of the Sunshine Coast centre, along with Rotary. This October will see the annual Hear and Say Centre’s Dancing With The Local Stars event to be staged at The Events Centre, Caloundra, where local celebrities will battle it out for the title of biggest fundraiser and best dancer. (This year will star this month’s cover person, Nadine Sullivan and profile magazine’s Genine Howard. Head to www.hearandsaycentre. com.au to book your tickets). “The Hear and Say Centre is a boutique charity very close to my heart,” Greg explains. “It is nice for the community to know where their dollars are being spent – they can see the results of their contribution first-hand; they can see for themselves each child that it puts through the centre.” And if that isn’t enough, Greg has just become a personal sponsor of the Forget Me Not Children’s Home, helping 21 female orphans in Nepal, whom he and his wife visited last year. “I truly believe you get out of life what you put into it,” Greg nods. “I am so lucky – I have a family I love, a wife who has supported me through thick and thin and a job I am motivated by. Life is pretty good, so it is a nice feeling to be able to pass this goodness around a little bit. “I am also passionate about Nambour. It is a great town with ‘a lot of heart’ as my dear dad used to say. It offers outstanding service and a village mentality which is often lost in today’s world. It is the green behind the gold. Although I love to travel, there is no place like home.” With that, Greg turns on his heels and skips out of the profile magazine office on his way to another meeting, and I ponder on our chat. He certainly is a ‘glass-half-full’ man and it is this attitude and his dedication to pleasing people, which has paid off for him. His customers are happy, his staff are happy, his community is happy, and in turn, Greg also walks with a smile on his face. And who can blame him?

marriage: for better or worse? words jessica jane sammut ll photography katie mackenzie ll sponsored by genesys wealth advisers and boq maroochydore
LAST MONTH WE ASKED THE BOYS, AND THIS MONTH WE CHAT TO THE GIRLS – WHAT IS THIS THING CALLED MARRIAGE ALL ABOUT? IS IT FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE? AS AN INSTITUTION WHICH MANY OF US TAKE PART IN, THERE MUST BE SOMETHING IN IT. PROFILE MAGAZINE’S JESSICA JANE SAMMUT FINDS OUT.
“
Treat ’em mean, keep ’em keen” as the saying goes. True or a million miles off the mark? Do we all secretly love the thrill of the chase, the dance of the dating game, the elusiveness of the unattainable objects of our affection? Or do we actually crave the deep bond, the stability, and the comfort of settling down with that special person, knowing each day we are loved, and that someone has our back through thick and thin (not to mention always having that guaranteed strong pair of arms around us at the end of the day)? Last month, we spoke to the boys on our topic: ‘Marriage: for better or worse?’ and this month it is the ladies’ turn to give their views on this institution. Is it the key to releasing a never-ending bubble of bliss, or is it a wet blanket on what would otherwise be a life of passionate and romantic, brief encounters? Joining me to discuss this are a plethora of sassy and successful Sunshine Coast women who look like they are the sorts to ‘love, honour and eat whole’ their other halves, rather than ‘obey’ them. Our wonderful co-host for our lunch is Sandra Wills, owner of Genesys Wealth Advisers, who has been with her husband for 20 years and still smiles the smile of a woman very much in love. Our guests are Daniella Saville of Buderim’s Kooshka Hair and Fashion Salon, the very newly engaged Angela Daley of Kaizen Exercise Physiologists, Donna Earley of Sapphire Water Filters, naturopath Vanessa Nunn, Tania Northey of All Smiles Denture Clinic and Meta Georgeson, our gorgeous new profile magazine account manager for Noosa and its surrounds. And then there is me, your dedicated ladies at lunch correspondent who is currently thinking of how she can convince her husband that the traditional symbol of wood is synonymous with staying at the Palazzo Versace for her five-year wedding anniversary … any ideas ladies? Hmm, I think I have an uphill struggle with that one.

profile: So ladies, marriage – it is for better or worse? meta: Well, I am not married and have never been married, although I have been engaged twice, but I have just never got down that aisle. I would love to be married. However, I am content to get tipsy and pash brooding strangers while I wait for Mr Right. donna: I have been married nearly 19 years and I think marriage is so important. It creates such a strong bond between two people. vanessa: Is marriage a societal thing I wonder? To have children and a house together is bond enough, surely? meta: It is romantic to get married though. donna: Yes, it is special. daniella: Marriage is much better than I thought it would be. I am on my second marriage as my first marriage was not right. I married at a very young age because I thought that was what I had to do, being a Catholic Italian, but my first husband and I weren’t suited. Being older helps so much when getting married, as you know who you are and what you want. Women now have careers that take them in all sorts of directions before they know themselves. We all grow up later I think. The second time I married, I married my best friend. We stay up all night long and talk about our businesses. I love it. tania: Our marriage shaped us and has made us definitely better as a couple. We have come a long way from his first chat-up line to me of “great teeth!”. profile: How easy is sharing your life with someone? If we love someone, should it come naturally? daniella: Living with someone can be one of the hardest things to do, even if you love the person. donna: It is never a bed of roses, however much you love someone. There are thorns in there somewhere. daniella: I think you need to allow a man to be a man – they are hunters and gatherers.
donna: I think having time apart is important too. Time with the girls or for the guys, fishing trips with the boys is healthy. Also, to do things as a couple is great – my hubby and I go diving together. daniella: Girlfriends are great for listening. Men are great if you want someone to fix something! meta: When I go into a relationship, I have dealbreakers which means that if they are crossed, the relationship cannot continue. Mine were broken with the father of my two children. However, I am lucky, I have a wonderful relationship with him. We are a family in many senses of the word. profile: Nowadays, the battle of the sexes is understood so much better, so does this help or hinder us? vanessa: We are more educated nowadays, that is for sure. But interestingly, there is also a very high divorce rate in this day and age. Perhaps we are getting out of marriage too quickly without riding through the rough times? daniella: We need to think in the first instance about why we are getting married. My first husband and I were worlds apart and it was very hard for me to get divorced due to my faith and my Italian family. profile: So what makes a happy marriage? daniella: I recognise and accept that men are different to women – I let my man go into his man cave when he needs! I also think people place too much emphasis on money. My husband used to work very hard, too hard in fact. He was high profile and it was a very busy time. He gave it up to live a quieter life so as to enjoy spending time with me and our three daughters. angela: Peace comes from the inside. You can’t expect a marriage to make you happy. profile: Would you wish for your children to get married? angela: I have only just got engaged and I am in

my 30s. This has allowed me to work out who I am. I have agreed to marry my partner because I want to, not because I feel I should or because I need to. To me, this is the perfect age to get married. I would also want that for my children. daniella: I agree that to wait is better. I would say to my daughters to wait until they are 29 years old. They should spend the time before this working out what they want to do in life. I was married at 20 years old for 14 years, and then I divorced after finally accepting it was not working. donna: My teenage boys believe in marriage which is beautiful to see. profile: If your partners had not proposed and didn’t want to get married, would this have changed things between you or would you have accepted it? meta: I would have been annoyed. I think women deserve that commitment. donna: When my husband proposed I was not expecting it, but it was a wonderful feeling. tania: My husband proposed when we found out I was pregnant. It felt like completion. angela: My husband is considered ‘older’ to get married for the first time, but it is because he doesn’t take it lightly and wanted to find the right person at the right time. And I am the lucky girl he has chosen. profile: What about the families attached to your husbands … after all, you marry you man, you marry his mother! daniella: My husband and I have a bond in that we are both the black sheep of our families, so this has really connected us. I get on very well with my mother-in-law also. We are close and I love that. tania: When you meet the right person, you accept them for all that they are. profile: Does anyone have a marriage hero? tania: My marriage! We have each other’s back and we do good with our kids. meta: Someone once told me the basis of a good

marriage is never giving up at the same time – sometimes you walk strongly together and other times you carry each other. profile: And finally, what would your top tips be for keeping a marriage alive? meta: Never hold grudges. daniella: Sex! This is so important in a marriage. It has to be said though, I am a man in a woman’s body. When sex breaks down, it is the start of things to come … sandra: A good relationship just gets better and better – shared interests, passion and spending time together are so important. I also think having your own lives enhances your relationship. donna: I agree. Date nights are excellent – it is so important to make time for yourselves as a couple. You cannot remain married to someone if you don’t make the effort. tania: Humour. To me, this is key, after all, a couple that laughs together, stays together, right? So there you have it. The ladies love having a man in their lives, but they don’t take it for granted. In fact, the ladies seem to be very savvy about their marriages and their resultant happiness, and I think this is a sign of the times. Women have had to become aware of their roles in their marriages and the dynamics of their relationships as a result of changing times, and this has been for the better, in my opinion. Gone are the days of subservient acceptance and instead we have a breed of women who are truly, madly, deeply in love with their men and marry because of this, not because they have to for money or social acceptance. No wonder our boys last month all seemed so happy! What could be better than having a soul mate who picks you up when you are down and celebrates with you when life throws you onto a winning streak? The world is fast and furious, but if we slow down for a second we see that it all makes sense when love is in the air. And for that reason, marriage can only be a wonderful thing.
SANDBAR BEACHFRONT BISTRO, cOOLUM Sandbar Beachfront Bistro, Coolum, is a gem of a restaurant set inside Coolum Surf Club, with outstanding (not to mention, breathtaking), sweeping views of Coolum Beach. On being seated in a beautiful private area overlooking the ocean, we were dazzled by the sunny view and made to feel like VIPs as our beautiful lunch awaited us. With a vast array of mouthwatering dishes, we tucked into our mains with gusto. Two stand-outs were the cajun spiced snapper fillet served on a rocket, roasted tomato, fetta and chickpea salad finished with balsamic reduction, and the 250 gram sirloin fillet on garlic-roasted golden potatoes with sautéed baby spinach and a red wine jus, which were to die for. Our guest, Daniella, even commented it was the best meal she had eaten on the Sunshine Coast. Praise indeed from a New Yorker! Dessert was equally as tantalising, with a sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce, and a passionfruit meringue with fresh cream, offered as our choice. I had the sticky date pudding and it was sensational. Praise again; this time from a Londoner! And of course, we enjoyed a large selection of accompanying wines to frame our lunch just perfectly. It was an afternoon of Sunshine Coast relaxation at its best. Sandbar Beachfront Bistro, Coolum, is open seven days for lunch 12noon to 3pm, and dinner from 6pm to 9pm. of wealth through
property with Chris Childs
Have you ever wondered why some people seem to make big profits with their property investments, while others seem to have poor returns or worse still, lose money, lose enthusiasm and sell out after a year or two?
We all know someone who seems to have the Midas touch – everything they touch seems to turn to gold … are they just lucky? What is their secret to success? Studies show that luck has very little to do with it. In nine out of ten cases, it comes down to sound advice and professional research. Chris Childs, herself a multi-million dollar property investor and founder of Think Money, shares her seven secrets to wealth through property that she used to accumulate her massive property portfolio via her successful ‘Midas Touch’ program.
Secret 1 - ADVICE Advice, everyone loves to give it. Be careful who you take advice from. It’s not just the bad guys you need to watch out for. Family, friends and even the bloke at work – often with the best of intentions – can give you advice that can hold you back for years. A good rule of thumb is to look at who they are, and what they have, and if that is where you want to be, consider their advice.
Secret 2 - FINANCIAL PLATFORM Getting the correct finance platform. Just by doing your banking differently, you can save tens of thousands of dollars of your own mortgage and years of the time you need to be in debt. In fact, if you do it right, you can own several investment properties in the time it would take you to pay off your own home. Where do most people get their banking advice from? You guessed it – the banks! And who makes the most profit from that advice – you or the banks? It makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
Secret 3 - TIMING Timing the Market. The great thing about property is that, over time, property always increases. The secret to making a lot of money with property is to buy at the perfect time and ride the growth cycle. Sounds logical, but most people buy on emotion
Contact Christine Childs Mobile 0419 744 193 august 2011
and react to the media. The masses buy-in towards the peak of the buying cycle and sell out from fear or disappointment when the market has retracted. The only way to break this cycle is with good advice and sound research.
property eventually goes positively geared - and true wealth comes from capital growth, not cash flow. Only buy in high risk areas if you have enough other investments to weather the storm of a dramatic reduction in the market.
Secret 4 - LOCATION
Secret 7 - MULTIPLY
Location Location Location. Again, the correct research is the key to getting this right. By discovering the fundamentals of demographics, yields, supply and demand, infrastructure spending, population movements to name but a few, you can select the right state, city, suburb and street to maximize your returns in the short term. By the time the media is promoting an area, you have usually missed the biggest opportunities. This fast growth enables you to use your increased equity to purchase again and again.
Go forth and multiply. The advantage of getting the research right is to enable you to get good capital growth and then enable you to use your equity to buy more. By timing the market perfectly, it’s possible to add another property to your portfolio each year. The secret is in managing the holding costs. This is the one thing that most investors don’t understand, and is the biggest cause of failure in property investing. Again, having the correct financial platform is essential to building a strong foundation while constructing your property portfolio.
Secret 5 - DO YOUR SUMS Before you jump in, it is important that you do all your sums to make sure the venture you are looking at stacks up financially. For example, if you are purchasing to undertake some renovations, ensure you do a feasibility study and research your profitability in relation to other similarly renovated properties. By calculating your purchase price, and adding on the costs of buying, renovation costs and, if relevant, selling costs, in comparison to the likely sale price or improved value will quickly tell you if it is a sound venture.
Chris has assisted many clients from starting out and purchasing their first investment property through to giving them strategies to allow them to amass millions of dollars worth of property in just a few years. Chris and Think Money can help you

too. Call today to book a free wealth
This is often overlooked in the rush to secure a positively geared investment. In a lot of cases, investing in mining areas can give a substantially higher return, thus investors could throw caution to the wind in trying to chase these ‘cash cows’. While there is nothing negative about positive gearing, be aware, there are much higher risks of the market having a sudden and dramatic drop in these areas in comparison to coastal areas and capital cities. Ellerfield Financial Planning is a leader in its field, its success backed by ethics, a long history of helping individuals reach their financial goals, and a ‘family’ ethos. Ellerfield would like to introduce Rachel Hutchison, who has been kind enough to share her family’s experience of working with a financial planner. Rachel is married to Stephen Hutchison and lives and works in the beautiful Twin Waters here on the Sunshine Coast. Together, they have two primary school-aged children – Emily and Thomas. What prompted you to consider working with a financial planner? We were doing our tax returns and had a couple of questions for our accountant at Keating and Associates regarding the best way to redirect some extra money we were trying to save, as well as the CPI increase in our salary. He recommended that we have a chat with Ellerfield as he realised that he was not able to answer some of our more involved questions and they were best qualified.
going to be able to achieve our longer term goals in regards to a comfortable retirement, private schooling, and also how to have that overseas holiday we have dreamed about. Could you explain how “ellerCentral cash flow management” has helped your family on a day to day basis? We have always had a budget, and we follow budgets and forecasts at work, so we knew what they were. Ellerfield made us realise that unless you are constantly reviewing and following it, it is easy to just spend the extra cash in the bank account on a whim. I now know exactly where we spend our money on a weekly and monthly basis. We know that we are rapidly reducing our mortgage and also making more conscious and informed decisions on whether we really need that impulse buy. I still can go shopping and buy the clothes I like, the household bits and pieces, and the gifts I like to spurge on, but I also make sure that it fits the budget we have created. Could you explain what the Ellerfield “MRP” is and why you chose to implement this strategy for your home mortgage?
We had several meetings with the Ellerfield team before any firm plan was implemented or any fees discussed. We felt that they wanted to get to know us on a personal level first and then on a professional level. We have made, and will continue to make all decisions together with their team – nothing is assumed, and everything is discussed at length to make sure that we are comfortable with their recommendations.
Ellerfield’s Mortgage Reduction Plan is tailored for each client. For us, it meant small but important changes to how we could reduce our morgage quicker and more effectively without having to sacrifice. We had the standard variable rate home loan but changed it to a line of credit. We now have our salaries paid directly to our line of credit each week, which in turn reduces the interest calculated on a daily basis. Our day to day expenses are all paid for on our credit card which we pay in full at the end of the month. I also update our monthly budget regularly so I can see how much we have spent for the month and make sure we are not overspending. Simply by doing this for the past eight months we have already made big inroads into reducing our debt.
What were you hoping to achieve by working with a financial planner?
Has you financial planner been able to help you in any areas that you did not expect?
We knew that we could afford to repay our current mortgage, but it was probably going to take until we were approaching retirement the way we were going. We needed to consider how we were going to afford to retire and still live the great lifestyle we were used to. We also needed to look at being able to afford private schooling for our kids – this was always our dream, but we were not sure it was financially possible with such a short time frame as our oldest child was already in Year 6.
We had no life insurance, income protection insurance or serious illness insurance, so if anything had happened to either of us we would have had to sell our beautiful home just to keep going. Ellerfield is also about to help us with improving our superannuation situation – that is the next step.
Why did you choose to work with the financial planner you selected?
Has your financial planner helped you achieve these goals? It is a work in progress but we are now able to see that all our goals are very possible. Ellerfield has been very proactive in showing us how we are

Would you recommend your financial planner to friends and family? Without hesitation! They have certainly made us feel more in control of our financial future and we are very much included in all the decision processes. They have the expertise to guide us, but we do not feel that they have taken over. We feel more in control of our finances and future than ever before.

It can have us cowering in a corner through fear or standing on top of the world in elation. And no-one knows this better than Nadine Sullivan. What this bright and bubbly woman has been through one would never guess. As founder of Active Living (a thriving mind, body and soul wellness centre), in addition to being a devoted mum to two girls, Koko Belle and Kit Willow, and a contender in the upcoming Mrs Australia pageant, Nadine shows none of the insecurities she suffered in her childhood and as a young adult. Instead, she presents as a strong, radiant, loving and positive female role model, oozing confidence and empowering all those who come within a foot of her. But the smiles shadow a darker past, a past of turmoil and demons, a past which saw Nadine’s body fighting for sustenance while her mind kept her housebound for over a year, unable to take a step out into the world while other girls her age were partying and forging careers. Born in Rosebud, Victoria, in 1979, Nadine was a beautiful child. All blonde hair and brown eyes with a smile which would melt even the coldest of hearts, Nadine was a picture. And yet, her childhood, sadly, was not. “My childhood was not happy,” Nadine remembers. “My family life was tumultuous with lots of emotional and mental manipulation. My father was at times physically abusive to my mother and verbally and emotionally abusive to me. I could not please him. As far back as I remember, he used to put me down. I was convinced he didn’t love me and therefore felt I mustn’t be worth loving. I would endeavour to seek his approval time and time again, never to receive it. I therefore suffered huge anxiety as a child. I used to get severe stomach pains and was eventually referred to a child psychologist who confirmed I had an anxiety disorder.” By the time she was 13, Nadine was suffering badly from what she describes as “you’re-not-good-enough syndrome.” “As a young teenager, I met my first boyfriend who was a football fanatic,” Nadine explains. “He told me I was fat, and because I had no confidence in myself as a result of my father’s manipulation, I believed him. So, I stopped eating and starved myself. Nobody knew I wasn’t eating. I kept it hidden very well. My anorexia was my secret and my way of feeling in control.” Not only was it the start of Nadine’s eating disorder, it was also the start of a dating pattern which saw Nadine continually choose partners who were like her father – mentally and physically abusive. “I accepted this behaviour as normal,” says Nadine, “as that is what I had grown up witnessing.” At the age of 14, Nadine’s mother separated from her father and moved from Victoria to the Sunshine Coast. It was a welcome change for Nadine who hoped her anxiety would be helped by the change in environment. Nadine’s mother was “everything” to her and she felt closer than ever to her now she august 2011
was away from her father. However, Nadine slipped into the same destructive mindset as before and in fact continued to get worse thanks to the unstable relationships Nadine found herself in. “I remember my year 12 exams well,” she recalls. “Not because it was an important landmark in my educational life, but because I passed out with hunger before my first exam. “By the time I was 21, I was not only anorexic, I was agoraphobic too. I couldn’t leave the house. I suffered regularly from panic attacks. I couldn’t sleep. I literally could not go to the supermarket or get in a car. I stayed indoors and lived on the couch. My weight reduced to 42kgs at 170cm tall, giving me a body mass index of 14.5. “I survived on tinned fruit as I didn’t have to chew it, and in my mind, food that didn’t have to be chewed did not count as food and was allowed. I cried the whole time. It was a terrible phase of my life. I even wrote to letters to my family telling them I was ready to take my own life; I wanted it to be over. Mum kept trying to take me to the doctor but I refused to go. In the end, I agreed to attend and was put on medication, but I didn’t take it. I was in self-destruct mode.” I listen carefully as Nadine relates this sad time of her life to me. I cannot fathom how this beautiful, strong, vibrant woman in front of me could have been reduced to such mental anguish. It just goes to show, you never know someone until you know all of them: their past, their demons, their secrets. “After a year or so of being housebound, a friend of mine, Nicky, contacted me to see if I wanted to help her form a dance troupe. I had been dancing all my life and it was the one thing I actually felt I could do well. Coyote Ugly, the movie, had just been released, and Nicky had an idea to form a girl group similar to that of the film. I was scared, but excited. I suddenly felt I had something outside of myself to focus on. We recruited a few more girls and set about training. We had to train at my house as I still couldn’t leave it, but I started to eat a little bit more and began to feel slightly better about myself.” And so marked the start of an immediate change in Nadine. The dance troupe was commissioned for its first show at the Ettamogah Pub on Australia Day and Nadine was suddenly faced with one of her greatest fears, the public. She had two options: she could accept the booking and face her fears, or not accept it, letting down her group of dedicated dance companions. Despite her mental reluctance, she knew she could not let her team down. “I felt sick for days. I sweated, I paced. I dreamt about it. I thought of nothing else. I had to get myself out of the house and onto a stage. This was huge. “The day came and I got in the car with Mum, I got to the pub and I got in costume. I could feel my heart beating every second and could almost hear the clock ticking down to the start of our show. As I took my place in the darkness of the stage in anticipation of the show opening, everything went into slow motion. I wanted to run, but I didn’t. I knew I had to do this. profilemagazine

“Suddenly the music burst into life signalling the beginning of our performance and I sprang into action ... and it was like none of my past mattered. I forgot everything I was scared of and just danced. All I had been afraid of disappeared. We did an excellent first show and the crowd went wild. But when the music stopped, I went back to being the nervous girl I was and slunk home.” This moment of enlightenment and of feeling free led to a dramatic transformation in Nadine. Having fought medicine her whole life, Nadine visited a specialist doctor in anxiety and depression and agreed to a program of medication, something her mother had been desperate to get Nadine to do for years. And for the first time ever, Nadine gave herself permission to feel well, continuing to perform with the dance troupe all over the Coast. “The combination of the dance troupe and the medical assistance I was getting led me through recovery,” Nadine smiles. “I started to eat and I actually felt happy – an emotion I had not known for a long time.” At 23, after a couple of years with her dance troupe, Nadine went on to obtain a full-time paid job with a leading pharmaceuticals company, which saw her travelling all over Australia and New Zealand – a role she would never have foreseen herself taking in her dark days. Her confidence grew with each trip away and sale made. “I learnt a lot from my illness and my recovery. Once you know how your mind controls you, you can achieve so much more in life. The mind is so powerful; it can take you high or it can take you low.” However, as Nadine relaxed her aversion to food, instead of eating nothing she found she couldn’t stop eating, steadily gaining weight, peaking at 85kg a year or so later. “No-one wanted to say anything,” Nadine laughs, “as I hadn’t eaten in years, but then I couldn’t stop!” It was at this time that Nadine met her husband, Dan, a personal trainer and black belt karate champion who, Nadine says, “has the kindest heart”. “Dan taught me how to eat well, how to exercise, how to respect my body, and how to look at the world. He made me feel good about myself which no other man had done before. I started to master my thought patterns, I saw what I had been doing with food and how it had become a control mechanism and a way of destroying myself and my body. I started working-out, led by Dan, and the weight dropped off. I was inspired by Dan’s amazing attitude.” A year after meeting Nadine, Dan proposed and Nadine’s life was on the up. She had a gorgeous man by her side and her agoraphobia and eating disorder seemed to be a thing of the past. However, Nadine’s journey into herself was not over as she went on to experience some further heartache in her life which she did not see coming. “Soon after becoming engaged, I fell pregnant. We were over the moon. I was finally enjoying life and was putting all the badness behind me. Yet at 13 weeks, I miscarried our baby and I was devastated. I blamed myself at first and felt my demons trying to pull me into those dark days, but I managed to use what I had learnt in my life, and after some time grieving I picked myself up and looked forward.” Later that year, after Nadine and Dan had tied the knot, Nadine was elated to find herself pregnant again. However, sadly once more it was not meant to be and
Nadine also lost this child. “I wallowed and cried,” remembers Nadine. “I couldn’t think what I had done to deserve such sadness. I blamed myself once more, and everyone around me. I was so angry. I thought I mustn’t deserve to be a mum. In the hard times, instead of taking to the couch, Dan and I trained. We tried to believe that everything happened for a reason and in this way we got through it.” As a mother, I cannot even begin to understand the pain one must feel on losing a pregnancy. It is enough to send even the strongest of women into a deep emotional decline and I am filled with pride at how Nadine dealt with her loss in light of all that she had been through. And just as I am feeling Nadine’s grief, she touches my hand, perhaps noticing my misty eyes, and reminds me that she went on to have her two beautiful little girls in 2007 and 2009, whom she describes as “a complete gift”, especially since she went on to miscarry another pregnancy after having them. And during this time, not only were her two precious babies born, but Active Living was also born, a thriving one-stop-shop for all health matters. “Building up Active Living has been so important to me as someone who has suffered illness throughout my life. It has been a huge task and, at times, very stressful. We have moved premises and have lost a business partner along the way, but it has been worth the ride. Interestingly, I think the ups and downs of my life have taught me to deal with the rollercoaster ride that comes with owning a business.” And that is not all. Nadine has not only turned the negatives of her illness into a positive via her business, she is now helping others through a public voice as Queensland’s national finalist in the Mrs Australia pageant, working to fight against domestic violence via the Women In Need of Australia charity, as well as working with Project Dovetail to help disadvantaged children. “I want to teach women to be proud of themselves and respect themselves. I want to stand up and be counted and to leave a legacy in the community for my kids. I have gone from not being able to eat or leave the house to being a mum, business owner and hopefully a spokesperson through Mrs Australia; if I can do it, anyone can. I’m not afraid anymore.” Ten years ago, Nadine Sullivan couldn’t have stood up to speak to a stranger. Now she stands to speak to anyone who will listen on how independent and strong women can be. You cannot keep her quiet. Nadine has come charging out of the shadows and into the light and is desperate for others to learn from her plight and to suffer in silence no more. She is someone who has undergone a journey many of us could not envisage, a journey involving self-loathing, anorexia, agoraphobia, extreme anxiety and great loss. But she won’t be beaten. She won’t be kept down. After years of fighting the crippling demons on her back, she walks tall and proud and is wise beyond her 32 years. As a personal believer that anything is possible if you set your mind to it, Nadine Sullivan has to be my case in point. Where there was sadness there is now love and where there was pain there is now healing. Nadine is right; the mind is a powerful tool and the sooner we learn how to use it, the more enriched, more beautiful and more fulfilled our lives can be.

NAB BUSINESS PROMOTION
understanding cash flow with Kellie Kersnovske Business cash flow is vital to keep a business balanced through good and bad times –being caught out of pocket can have a domino effect on other parts of the business. Understanding the financial position of your business and payment processes is the best way of managing incoming and outgoing cash flow and reducing the stress associated with cash flow management. Cash in the closet Often businesses have sources of cash they don’t even know about. Keeping control of operating expenses, inventory levels, debt collection, asset purchases and improving payment channels can often improve access to these untapped cash channels. Ways of improving access to cash can be as simple as focusing on getting paid by reviewing your debt collection process and structuring vehicle or equipment purchases around your seasonal cash flow, to name a couple. External factors For many businesses, external cash flow factors are out of their control, but reviewing these regularly could make a world of difference. Sales, gross margins, costs, debtors, creditors, stock and capital exposures are all areas that affect each other and the inter-reliance, in turn, can have huge impacts on a business. For example, if debtors are slow, then business owners need to review or implement their debtor control policy, i.e. what are their acceptable terms in relation to debtor collections and payments (creditors). By understanding how a business can increase available ‘cash’ by reviewing supplier terms, stock controls and other cash flow drivers, it may be able to offset the impact of a slower debtor. A decision can then be made as to whether additional financing is required, which could be sourced from additional equity contributions or a potential debt funding requirement. Business owners should become more conversant with what drives the cash within their business, i.e. both sources and uses. In addition, businesses need to understand or plan for what will be happening in the next six to 12 months. They need to understand what the fixed and variable costs are in their business and what they really need to earn and receive per week, per month, etc. Useful Tools For free online tools including cash flow forecast templates, guides on how to improve your cash flow and the 10 Step Financial Health Check, visit nab.com.au/smallbusiness Phone 5439 4821 kellie.m.kersnovske@nab.com.au

his month we meet Henzells’ administration manager, Katherine Allan, who not only moonlights as profile magazine’s book-keeper, but is also a talented singer who’s Irish heritage shines through her golden voice. She has starred in many a show including playing the lead, Fantine, in Les Misérables with the Buderim Amateur Theatrical Society.
How long have you worked with Henzells? Six years. What drew you to a career in real estate? I was looking for a change and had been impressed with Henzells as a customer and thought I’d love to be part of it. What do you love the most about your role? Diversity. I can be fixing an IT problem one moment and dealing with hundreds of thousands of dollars the next. What is the most frustrating part of your role? Not enough hours in the day! Aside from your job, what is your true passion in life? Singing. I love to be on the stage ... it’s been three years and I really miss it. Best I can do is sing in the car these days. How long have you lived on the Sunshine Coast? Eighteen years. I met my wonderful husband on an American summer camp in 1990 and the rest, as they say, is history. If you could be on any reality TV show, what would it be? X Factor. I reckon I could win it. I do a great power ballad! Three words to describe you? Loyal, cheeky and hardworking. Something most people wouldn’t know about you? I can’t swim. Favourite place on the Sunshine Coast? Neurum Creek. I love to go camping there with my family. Favourite holiday destination? New York. I spent two summers there and love it. The food, the smell, the people and of course, the shopping. Most embarrassing life moment? Asking my husband if the local Bandidos club house was a new Mexican restaurant. Highlight of your career? Finishing my accountancy studies will be the highlight of my career. Highlight of your personal life? Making the move from Ireland to Australia.
ll photography shawn abrams The big, wide, wonderful world of real estate can be a daunting beast, with so much money on the line and people’s lives and family homes at stake. With this in mind, meet the stellar team at Henzells Agency, Caloundra – a team of honest professionals who live and work in the local community. Professionals who, after all, are just like you and me.

I love walking into a boutique and finding that special piece, then trying it, buying it, taking it home – then of course it’s all about the first outing. If I can create that for my customers, I am a happy girl. profile: What must-have items should we all have in our wardrobes this season? allanah: Tights and a tunic. Layers are still big and our lifestyle on the Coast is perfect for layering. profile: How would you describe your style? allanah: Very diverse and it swings with my mood, but always colourful and fun. profile: What’s your fashion inspiration? allanah: I gain inspiration from all manner of people and ideas, whether it’s an iconic designer, beautiful fabric or someone with their own sense of style. profile: What’s coming into store? allanah: We have two new labels this coming season I am excited about including BrazilRoxx, which has lots of colour and quirky little patterns. The other, Artisan, is a more formal, dressier collection with soft silk dresses and coats. profile: What and where is your favourite boutique? allanah: Desigual in Barcelona is a favourite, but we also stock the label in Gingers. I am not in love with stores that are monotone. profile: What is your fashion fetish? allanah: Boots and scarves. I can’t tell you how many scarves I have; they are great and can easily dress up a simple t-shirt and jeans. profile: What do you always have in your handbag? allanah: At the moment there’s an iPhone, lippy, perfume and money.

top five hair tips with Wade Blackford It’s time for my top five hair tips of 2011 thus far, although I have to admit I did steal a few of these from friends and colleagues. You should never underestimate the power of your hair. If you don’t spend the time and effort to make your hair look great, you just won’t be at your best and that’s a fact. It doesn’t matter if you go out and spend a fortune on high-end fashion, if you have two inches of regrowth and just roll out of bed, throwing on your $499 dress and $200 heels but do nothing to your hair, you’re going to scare someone. On the contrary, if you throw on jeans, a t-shirt and your trusty old pair of comfy shoes but spend 20 minutes styling your hair, you’ll definitely look and feel fantastic. This advice is not just for the ladies either, men are a prime example of this sort of behaviour. If you’ve ever seen a guy in a great suit – but who hasn’t bothered to do his hair – you’ll know exactly what I mean. C’mon guys, get it together!
Here we go: 1. This is a touchy issue, but needs to be dealt with. If you’ve got those sneaky little silver ones coming through, but you prefer your colour to be chestnut brown or verging on black, ask your stylist to provide you with a re-touch service in between colour appointments. Those pesky silver buggers usually come through every two to three weeks. We do it in our salon for a minimal charge so you can drop in and just get your hairline and parting re-touched.
4. Always use a thermal protector when using hot elements and tools. They do protect your hair and most of them contain UV defence as well. 5. Last but not least, rebook your appointments when you leave the salon. It keeps you on track and remember, salon time is your time and we all need a little of that. Strut Hair and Beauty 5443 5605 www.struthair.com.au
2. I encourage people to use salon-only products. It supports local small business and I promise it will make a difference to the feel, look and health of your hair. 3. Change it up every now and then. You don’t have to go crazy; maybe just try styling your hair in a different way to occasionally mix up your look.

avoid dry skin with Benita May Dry, dehydrated skin is more common in the winter months and is the cause of premature ageing and fine lines. Here are some do’s and don’ts for achieving healthy hydrated skin this winter. Do … exfoliate regularly. Regular exfoliation removes the layers of dead skin cells which build up and allows better penetration of your serums and moisturisers. For your body, try an exfoliant which contains oils to help nourish and prevent dry, flaky skin. For your face, try an exfoliant and cleanser in-one that you can use two to three times per week. Do … drink six to eight glasses of pure water. As the cool weather continues, it is easy to forget to drink enough water as you often don’t feel as thirsty, but your skin and body still need it! Do … change your moisturiser and cleanser. See your beauty therapist for a skin analysis and consider changing your moisturiser to a richer
more nourishing treatment, or introduce a serum to boost the hydration of your skin. Surprisingly, simply changing to a cream-based cleanser may be enough to help prevent dryness. Do … have a regular professional facial, or give yourself a regular hydrating mask. Your beauty therapist will tailor your treatment and be able to use hydrating masks and infusions to boost the hydration, helping to plump, soothe and nourish your skin. Ask for your therapist’s recommendation on masks for improving the hydration of your skin and give yourself a weekly home treatment. Do … make sure you are getting enough essential fatty acids in your diet. We are what we eat, and your diet has a direct effect on the health of your skin. Essential fatty acids are important for healthy skin function.
really hot shower but it does dry out your skin. Just turn the hot water back slightly and don’t stand under the shower for longer than you really need to. Always put your moisturiser on as soon as you get out, that includes your body too. Skin that is moist will absorb your moisturiser much better than when it has started to dry out. Don’t … drink too much coffee and tea. It dehydrates your skin and body. For every cup of coffee you drink you should have three extra glasses of water. Try herbal infusions or green tea for a refreshing change. My pick for great skin is emerginC hydra-repair capsules ($145) and emerginC vitality mask ($79). ageing … When you look into the future, what do you see? A retirement of luxury? A place to go which will offer comfort and security, knowing you will be well looked after? Age is something that affects us all – our loved ones, and our families, so why not plan our senior years in the same way we plan a night out on the town … in style?
50:50 rule Life and death medical crises, financial problems, property disputes and caregiver stress … if you’ve ever cared for a senior loved one, you know working with siblings can lead to family strife. Relationships between adult brothers and sisters can suffer as a result. The 50:50 program is a family relationship and communication guide for real life situations that features practical advice. the right stuff If you have an elderly parent who isn’t coping well living at home, you may be wondering where to start looking when it comes to nursing homes and retirement villages. Finding the right place that has availability can take time, so if possible start discussions early and don’t wait for a crisis before you start looking. If it is companionship, safety and easy maintenance they are seeking, a retirement village might be suitable. The villages often include small independent dwellings, where residents can live with privacy and varied degrees of security. Residents are not expected to maintain gardens, and the village usually offers a range of social activities and outings that provide fun and social interaction they can choose to participate in. If your parent currently needs nursing support or you can predict it is likely that they will do in the near future due to disease or injury, you may want to look for a residential aged care home. They cater for people with both high (nursing home) and low (hostel) care needs, and provide accommodation, personal and nursing care, as well as staff, meals, furniture and cleaning. Linda Delamotte Your Home Care linda@yourhomecare.net.au
are you old enough?
It is estimated that by 2051, more than 25 per cent of the population will be aged over 65 while the number of people over 85 is expected to more than quadruple to approximately 1.8 million. To be eligible to enter an aged care facility, it is necessary to undergo an assessment by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). ACAT will assess whether you need low level care (such as a hostel) or high level care (such as a nursing home). Once the ACAT assessment has been completed and the required level of care is established, it is important to choose an appropriate aged care facility and determine the level of aged care fees that will be payable. Aged care homes charge a range of fees to cover care, accommodation costs and living expenses. These can vary enormously between facilities and from resident to resident. Seeking financial advice during this time can ensure the decisions you and your family make will be the right ones, while taking into consideration the impact to your financial situation, age pension entitlement and aged care costs. Making the wrong decision could result in a loss of aged pension, increased aged care costs and a reduced estate passed onto the next generation. the aerobics ace Qualified fitness leader Marjie Andrews believes no one is ever too old, overweight or unfit to enjoy the benefits of safe exercise. And at 70 years of age, Marjie is the Sunshine Coast’s “active ageing aerobics ace” and the epitome of health. “My exercise and lifestyle philosophy promotes the concept of ‘active ageing’,” Marjie explains, “which simply means enjoying safe and sensible exercise, keeping active, flexible and healthy and achieving improvement or gain without pain.” “By getting out and getting active, you are meeting people and creating new friendships and social contacts,” says Marjie. Check out Marjie’s aerobics classes yourself … and you never know, you might meet a new friend or two along the way!
swim your way young One of the ideal ways to stay in shape and keep fit is through aquatic exercise. Exercising in the water is a great way to add resistance without the drawbacks of impact, and also to raise a heart rate for aerobic exercise. Water aerobics is ideal for those who may not be able to participate in more strenuous land-based exercises with the resulting impacts, such as those who are elderly. Being elderly often comes with several ailments of the bones and other bodily structures which can turn exercise into an even more painful prospect than it usually is. The jarring impact of the ground on feet, even through shoes, can make jogging for those afflicted with arthritis or osteoporosis an impossibility, but it is crucial that exercise in the later stages of life be maintained. In fact, this might be the most important time of all to stay fit. Fit bodies are proven to be able to recover faster and also suffer less damage than bodies which are slow to respond due to being out of shape. So get in the pool and get fit. www.aquagym3000.com.au

pain in the neck with Dr David Hendrey It can affect your sleep, your marriage and your job. Nothing’s worse than feeling physically held back from life because your neck hurts and the pain just won’t go away. We have seen thousands of people with neck pain, arm problems and headaches leave the office pain-free.
Feel tight joints rest, relax and free up. Feel muscles tied in knots become more supple. Feel strength in your muscles increase. As you begin to see motion returning to your joints, you’re preventing and reducing the chances of disability and a crippling future.
More people on the Sunshine Coast are experiencing ongoing headaches and neck pain than ever before. A typical person will experience more than two bouts of headache or neck pain in a week and some are even experiencing more concerning symptoms such as numbness and tingling into the arms and hands.
Even though medications may provide some relief, we all know they merely mask the pain and don’t really do a great amount of justice to the body. Chiropractic practice prides itself on finding the underlying cause of your symptoms, while maximising the potential of your body.
The important news is that these symptoms aren’t normal and anyone experiencing them on a regular basis should make finding the cause a number one priority. Say yes to life again! See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living.
What should I do? You and your family deserve to live a healthier, pain-free way of life. Your spine is the framework that holds your entire body together, including your internal organs. Have it checked, corrected and start living a healthier life with your loved ones. Hendrey Chiropractic 5437 7222 www.hendreychiropractic.com.au
Will this really work for me? A recent scientific study showed chiropractic adjustments outperformed massage treatments in reducing pain. The study concluded that patients with chronic neck pain showed “clinically important improvements from a course of spinal manipulation ... the current evidence does not support a similar level of benefit from massage”. Find out why anxiety, nervousness, and panic attacks happen to you and discover how you can overcome them. Do you wake in the morning feeling anxious for no apparent reason? Do you find panic overwhelming you through the day when nothing is planned? You might feel nervous about going to work or when the phone rings, when there’s nothing to be worried about. This can go on for months or years, and can cause debilitating emotions, reducing your ability to work, and creating relationship problems at home.
There are a number of underlying causes that contribute to symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and poor concentration can also occur. Even though it seems psychological, and you may have issues in your life contributing to it, there are two very common physical problems that cause your symptoms to feel more extreme than they
should. These affect the nervous system, causing your fight-flight response to overreact. A malicious infection has been found to be a contributing factor in up to 90 per cent of tested patients. It’s picked up from overseas, or through having contact with someone who has travelled, which is only detected in specialised testing. This infection releases a toxin affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It has not often been associated with mental health, though studies show it impacts on the brain. It’s passed on very easily, so more than one person in a household may suffer from similar symptoms. You will also find some people can carry this infection with no symptoms whatsoever, as it seems to act when there are other health problems. Often we’re able to correlate the first sign of symptoms, coinciding with a stomach bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. It’s passed on quite easily through schools, day-care centres, or places of work. It’s quite easy to treat, when done properly, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. Infections are just one part of a seven-step process for permanently treating anxiety and other mental health conditions. These steps have been proven with testing to improve the
brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication. 95 per cent success rates with virtual gastric band hypnosis creating permanent weight reduction
The latest weight reduction technique taking Europe by storm is virtual gastric band (VGB) hypnosis. Recent trials in the United Kingdom were shown to have a 95 per cent success rate in helping people lose weight safely and without costly, dangerous surgery. Success rates are so high that virtual gastric band hypnosis is now being considered as a cost effective and safe alternative to the actual operation by the UK’s National Health Service. Leading Sunshine Coast hypnotherapist, Maggie Wilde, has launched the program here with results already confirming UK success rates. “Rather than costly and dangerous surgery, you can benefit from this program here on the Sunshine Coast,” Maggie Wilde states. “We use the power of suggestion in hypnosis to train the mind and body to accept and feel completely satisfied with far less food.”
This is of course the same principle behind the actual surgical procedure, but VGB hypnosis carries no dangerous risks, no recovery period and no ongoing medical treatment.
“When people begin to reduce weight, it also tends to have an enormous positive impact on their overall confidence and health,” Maggie Wilde explains.
The results of UK trials so far have shown people can lose up to 11 pounds (approx four to five kilograms) in the first week and one to two pounds (up to a kilogram) per week thereafter.
For further details regarding the cost of individual and group programs and to find out whether you are eligible for the program, contact Maggie Wilde.
“In Australia, we integrate multiple disciplines including specialised VGB hypnosis, neuro linguistic programming and meridian techniques to provide successful outcomes for those wishing to reduce weight permanently,” Maggie Wilde adds.
Maggie has helped thousands of clients over the years to reduce weight, stop unwanted habits and let go of emotional and fear-based issues. She is passionate about empowering people to create the life they’d love.
The program starts with a four to six week schedule (depending upon individual client needs) with monthly support group hypnosis to reinforce ongoing success for clients. Throughout the program, Maggie helps clients address emotional eating, overeating, habitual eating and the motivation to choose healthier options and smaller portion sizes. It also covers motivation to exercise and boosting self confidence.

skin cancer prevention with Dr Alison Jamieson Queensland is the skin cancer capital of the world, so it is likely that you or someone you know has had a skin cancer removed.
•• More than 10 skin cancers removed: reoccurrence risk is 100 per cent*
However, while it is standard practice among doctors to advise patients to have another check-up after 12 months or earlier, most people don’t know that once a skin cancer is removed, there is a greater risk of future skin cancers occurring in the surrounding areas if they do nothing.
It is important to educate patients on ways to improve sun-damaged and aged skin, providing a comprehensive, science-based, individualised program to reduce the risk of skin cancer and improve a patient’s skin health.
People with a history of skin cancer shouldn’t wait for another to occur, but find out what their future risk is now and get a personalised risk reduction plan organised. Once you have had one skin cancer removed the risk of another occurring in the future is as follows: •• One to two skin cancers removed: reoccurrence risk is 40 per cent* •• More than three skin cancers removed: reoccurrence risk is 94 per cent*
(*Reference Czarnecki et al. Dermatology 1994 Volume 189)
Over the years, many patients have asked how they can look after their skin after having a cancer removed. Apart from the obvious and being armed with sun-smart strategies, a complete medical skin health program is advisable, which should include: 1. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): a noninvasive procedure that delivers a medical and cosmetic outcome treating precancerous, superficial basal cell carcinomas, pigmentation and sun damage to arms, legs, torso and face. PDT, also known as photo rejuvenation, utilises a light-sensitive

product called 5-ALA or Metvix, combined with a customised light source. This leads to the destruction of damaged cells replacing them with newer, healthier ones. PDT can be used to treat a range of conditions. The benefit of this type of program is a selective destruction of abnormal skin cells rather than an indiscriminate ablation of healthy skin. It is affordable, versatile and easy to incorporate into your daily routine. 2. men’s health – the challenges with Denise Donati
Women’s health issues have enjoyed more attention than men’s health over recent years. However, Australian men are actually at a higher risk of developing many chronic diseases than women, and have a lower life expectancy.
professionals for regular check-ups and they often ignore signs of ill health until symptoms get quite bad. Thus men often present in medical clinics with quite advanced illness due to the long delay in seeking medical assistance.
The leading health issues for men are heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, depression and substance abuse – including tobacco and alcohol. Young men, in particular, are at great risk of depression, injury and death from accidents, suicide and self harm; and men from indigenous or poor socio-economic backgrounds have a greater likelihood of dying from a range of diseases, including heart disease, respiratory problems and suicide.
There is much debate and questioning from medical and social commentators about why gender plays such a role in health outcomes. Some of the environmental issues for men are occupational health and safety related – men commonly work in occupations that pose a greater risk to their health. In the professional sector, men work in excess of 48 hours a week which significantly impacts on their health and well-being.
Given that men have a higher risk than women and are more likely to die from degenerative diseases like heart disease and cancer, one might expect men to be more conscious of their health than women. However, the opposite is true. Many men are reluctant to visit health
Men are also often uncomfortable talking about their complaints. They are known to deny experiencing emotional stress and are more likely to abuse alcohol or other drugs to cope. Getting men to visit a health clinic is a good first step. However, it is unfortunate that the compliance

among men for continuing with medical or allied health treatments is quite poor. It is hard to know how we might change the habits of Australian men to allow them to take better care of their health. Positive life changes include exercise, healthy eating, developing work / life balance and stress management techniques. Meditation, for example, is a tool men can learn and employ to help deal with stress and emotional issues. flossing, formation and flying with Dr Simone Ricketts Regular readers of my column would no doubt be expecting another dental-only story with suggestions and recommendations regarding dental hygiene. However, this month I’ve decided to provide you with some insight into another interest of mine, aviation. Some of you may be aware that 2011 marks the 90-year anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), but few will realise that an air pilgrimage took place at the end of March to signify this. Myself and my husband, Matt, were invited to participate in this very special event in our restored ex-RAAF CT/4A Airtrainer ‘Plastic Parrot’, which from 1976 to 1993 had been used to teach countless numbers of new trainees at No. 1 Flying Training School at the RAAF base at Point Cook in Victoria. This air pilgrimage involved staging flights between former RAAF bases, commencing in New South Wales from Temora to Tocumwal, onwards the next day to Ballarat in Victoria. The sojourn then continued to Point Cook, the birthplace of the Australian Flying Corps and the RAAF.
After almost five hours of flying from our home-base on the Sunshine Coast, we arrived at the starting point, Temora in Central New South Wales. We witnessed the gradual swelling of aircraft numbers as participants from all corners of the country descended on this quiet country town. If flossing is a sign of someone who takes great pride and care for their teeth, then these pristine vintage and ex-military aircraft could be considered well and truly flossed. They were immaculate in appearance and mechanical condition. Almost 60 aircraft took part in this event, many of them with former air force history, ranging from tiger moth fabric-covered biplanes from the ’30s, through to the heavy metal of World War II, the spitfire and mustang fighters. These aircraft had real ‘teeth’, powerful Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 engines as well as guns and cannons bristling from their wings. One of the highlights for me, was flying in our CT/4 in formation with three other CT/4s. There are not enough superlatives to describe the awesome sight of flying in formation with
this group. We were also joined in formation by two historic wirraway WWII trainers off our wingtip – truly amazing. During our stops at Tocumwal and Ballarat, hundreds of local school children descended on these airfields where they whooped, whistled and cheered to the dazzling formation aerobatic display of the RAAF Roulettes’ precision flying team. All too soon the final day of the air pilgrimage arrived. Within 30 minutes of departure from Ballarat, our four-ship CT/4 formation had arrived overhead at Point Cook, the oldest military airfield still active in the world. A memorable dinner for all participants was held in the historic officer’s mess on base, along with the current and many former chiefs of air staff. The formal dinner and speeches capped off a truly remarkable and historical three-day flying event which we felt very honoured and proud to have been a part of. what is a heel spur? with Karl Schussig This is a very common question and a misunderstood problem. People are often told they have a heel spur just because they have pain in the heel area. They are also told that not much can be done about it, other than surgery. Wrong.
The plantar fascia can tear away slightly from its attachment to the heel bone and create a micro-bleed in the area. The bone cells then ossify the area of bleeding. This happens over a long period of time, not in a week or a month.
Only an X-ray can diagnose if a spur is present and even then the spur isn’t necessarily causing the heel pain. This is why it is important to see a podiatrist if you have a foot problem, as they are experts in foot and lower limb problems.
So yes, heel spurs do exist and they are developed over a long period of time,. However, the spur itself is not usually the cause of heel pain.
If you stopped 100 people in the street and had their feet X-rayed, you would find a large percentage would have a heel spur and didn’t know. So the existence of a heel spur does not equal pain. A heel spur is really a traction spur. On the bottom of your foot is a group of tissues called the plantar fascia, which attaches itself to the heel bone.
Proarch Podiatry 5456 2562 www.proarch.com.au
Most people with heel pain will notice it first thing in the morning when getting out of bed, or upon rising if they have been sitting for an extended period of time. The pain can be quite intense. However, once they get mobile and warmed up, the pain tends to be reduced. Tearing of the plantar fascia is only one cause of heel pain; but it is not the only cause. This is why it is important to see someone who is specifically trained in diagnosing and treating foot conditions.

Witch words Witch Words is a boutique graphic design studio that offers small to medium businesses a personalised branding service that takes the mystery and fear out of creating websites, logos, branding and social media design. Jeanne Treloar believes that every business is an extension of the person who operates it, so it’s important that the business owner’s personality, energy and values are portrayed through their branding. “I knew there had to be an easier way to help small businesses develop their brand. After working in design studios for years, I realised that I wasn’t connecting with my clients because there was a sales consultant or manager involved in the process. It was a bit like Chinese whispers, and the messages often got distorted. So I created Witch Words. Now I connect with my clients on a personal level to gain an understanding of their business; the colours they love, style of fonts and images they prefer, what inspires them and their ‘why’ for doing what they do. I love the process of crafting a unique brand that gives my clients something they’re proud of.” Do you want a website that you can easily manage yourself? The Sunshine Coast plays host to a plethora of accommodation and holiday options, for visitors and locals alike. However, there is one little property nestled in the foothills of the Hinterland that stands out – The Narrows Escape. Genine Howard discovered this shining gem on a recent weekend away and learnt that it’s the little things that make a big difference.
I
the little things...
’m a big fan of a romantic weekend getaway. Who isn’t? But I am talking a romantic weekend away with all the bells and whistles. You know the kind: the open fire, the seclusion from the rest of the world, the chocolates, the spa, the cosy big bed, the glasses of red wine and the cheese platter, and of course, the romantic walks. Well, I found just the place for an escape with all the typical weekend away bells and whistles … and more. This little gem, tucked away in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, offers everything you can dream of for a picture-perfect romantic weekend away. I am talking about the award-winning, luxurious, romantic, secluded and majestic The Narrows Escape. I was lucky enough to spend two nights at this little hideaway recently with my husband for some time away and to shake off the woes of the working week, and we absolutely fell in love … not with each other (that’s a given) but with The Narrows Escape. We meandered through the quaint town of Montville, an easy hour’s drive from the coast, and down the headily steep Narrows Road on the way to Lake Baroon. Then it was just a short drive down rainforest-lined track to the main house, manned by Mark and Jo Skinner … and their loveable border collies, Toby and Leyla. After a guided tour through the property, we were shown to our new home for the next two days. Now, I have been to some rainforest cottages in my time, and this one rates up there with the best. Set creek-side, the private wooden cottage with its own deck, looks directly over a gorgeous bubbling rainforest creek, lined with mossy granite boulders and tall rainforest trees. No sooner had Mark and the doggy crew left us to start our weekend of relaxation than we were greeted by a few other resident locals … fabulously bright coloured king parrots. Just as suddenly as they arrived, they shot off into the treetops, leaving us to get to know our new digs. And what digs they were. Each timber cottage was nestled in the rainforest, with only the trees for neighbours. The open-plan central area was surprisingly large with soaring timber ceilings and plenty of big windows looking directly out over the rainforest surrounds. The quaint kitchen was complete with stove, fridge, coffee machine and filled with every glass, bowl or platter you could need, to cook up a gourmet meal! However, we soon found there was no need. Having worked in the corporate sector for many years, Mark and Jo know what busy city-folk want, and provide an option for a home cooked meal to be served at night … prepared lovingly by the couple and brought to your cottage. The lounge area sounds like a cliché with its wood-burner and fur rug, but there was nothing clichéd about the pièce de résistance … a big corner spa; yes, right in the lounge room. How fabulously decadent! I could just see us sipping a glass of bubbles in there later that night in front of a roaring fire. Owners Mark and Jo stumbled across The Narrows a few years ago and it’s easy to see why they fell in love with the place. After a few tweaks here and there, including the addition of wide screen TVs and iPod docking stations, the pair scrubbed and polished this little gem ‘til it was beaming with charm and quaintness. The term ‘made with love’ certainly applies here.

ll words Genine Howard
The property is quite expansive, with its own saltwater pool and deck chairs for the warmer months and a quaint private gazebo overlooking country gardens. The jewel in the property’s crown must be the private rainforest walk along the creek. The easy walk meanders over mossy granite boulders and through towering rainforest trees, including ancient red cedars and tamarinds. Our quiet walk was only interrupted by the native bird life chatter from high in the canopy, and the odd bark from our trail companion, Toby, who happily bounded along during our exploration. With the property explored and the afternoon settling in, we retired to our private deck with a cold glass of wine and a courtesy cheese and fruit platter left by our hosts. And speaking of food, we were certainly not disappointed during our stay – a rich, warm, red wine casserole for dinner followed by homemade chocolate cake; gourmet chocolates and port for late night in front of the fire; and a breakfast hamper filled with all the goodies you could eat, including locally produced eggs, bacon, yogurt and jams and my favourite, the freshly baked croissants left discreetly at our door in the morning. Everything about The Narrows Escape is delightful, homely and well thought-out. And by our second night, my husband and I were convinced that it’s the little things that certainly make a big difference, and The Narrows was brimming with lots of perfect little things.

ernadette O’Shea is indisputably the monarch who presides over the throne of the Australian champagne culture. Like some owners who resemble their pets, Bernadette is the living incantation that is champagne – her sparkling personality effervesces and her enthusiasm is infectious, with a complexity created by her unparalleled knowledge. What Bernadette does not know about champagne isn’t worth knowing. At the recent Taste of Coolum weekend, Bernadette attended the Hyatt’s hedonistic dining experience as five champagnes were perfectly matched with their courses. In one of the most challenging wine matching scenarios, the following worked exquisitely; Ruinart “R” with Hervey Bay bug, G.H.Mumm de Cremant NV with Thai-influenced candied pork and scallop salad, Lois Roederer Rose 2000 and Rannock Farm quail three ways, BillecarteSalmon Cuvee Nicholas Francois 1998 with 62 degrees poached Veal and Jamon Iberico, and finally, Philloppanant Sublime Reserve Sec with Eumundi strawberry mille~fueille. The Taste of Coolum weekend also offered a separate champagne garden with champagnes from Mumm, Lanson, Piper Heidseick, Nicholas Feulatte, Ruinart, and other sparkling wine exhibitors. The decadence continued with barrow loads of oysters, smoked salmon and strawberries … this is the life! PS Did you know the Titanic was not christened with champagne? live debt-free ... sooner with Linda Ireland There are a number of repayment strategies that could help Sunshine Coast borrowers own their home sooner. Making a lump sum payment (big or small) into a loan can make a substantial difference. Take a loan of $300,000 at a standard variable rate of 7 per cent over 30 years. If a borrower who was five years into their loan term contributed $500 from their 2011 tax return into the above mentioned loan, this would reduce the overall term by one month and the total repayments by approximately $2,360. If you did that every year, imagine the difference that that, or an even higher amount, would make. Depending on the loan type and lender, a property owner may save thousands of dollars in interest by paying a loan every fortnight or week rather than monthly. For example, a borrower with monthly repayments of $2,000 will pay
68
profilemagazine
$24,000 off their loan by year end (12 x $2,000). If they paid fortnightly, by splitting their monthly repayment in half and making repayments of $1000, they will pay $26,000 (26 x $1,000) as there are 26 fortnights in a year. So, paying fortnightly allows borrowers to squeeze in the equivalent of one extra monthly repayment each year, helping to reduce the overall loan term and total repayments. Loans with 100 per cent off-set accounts enable borrowers to link a savings account with their home loan account and ‘off-set’ or use that amount to reduce the interest accumulated on their mortgage.
It really comes down to finding a repayment strategy that works for the individual borrower. Those with an existing loan should give themselves a home loan health check every year or two. While you’re getting your tax returns organised, it’s a great time to also review your loan. Mortgage Choice 5476 9333 linda.ireland@mortgagechoice.com.au
Borrowers could also consider rounding up their loan repayment amount to the nearest $10, $50 or $100 to save time and money down the track. It may also be possible for a borrower to negotiate a reduced interest rate or reduced fees and home insurance discounts.

binding financial agreements at a glance with Leisa Toomey Colin* recently came to see me as he had separated from his partner of two years. He was a hard working young guy and had saved well. He had purchased a small unit, had a nice car that he had paid off, and had some money in the bank. His girlfriend had a part-time job and was studying. She had not contributed to the relationship in any real financial sense but now she was now seeking half of everything he owned. Understandably, Colin was worried about his future as he had never really given a lot of thought as to what would happen if their relationship ended. There is a lot of misconception about what people are entitled to when a relationship fails, so this month we will briefly look at what a Binding Financial Agreement (BFA) is and when it might be necessary. In short a BFA is something that married couples or couples living in a de facto relationship can enter into before, during or after a marriage or de facto relationship. You will often hear people refer to them as ‘prenuptial agreements’.
A BFA can be set up in a number of ways and can specify things like the financial settlement or break up of the asset pool, the level of financial support one spouse will give the other and any incidental issues, after the breakdown of a marriage or a de facto relationship. In Colin’s case he could have had a BFA that clearly specified that should the relationship fail, the girlfriend would not be entitled to make a claim on any of the assets he had prior to the relationship.
legal and financial advice prior to signing the document and, as stated above, they also need to be reviewed by your solicitor on a regular basis.
By having a BFA in place, couples can have some certainty over how the asset pool will be broken up when the relationship ends. However, it is strongly recommended that they be reassessed at least every two years and in particular after a significant event has occurred in the relationship such as the birth of a child or one party inheriting a sum of money.
However, for those with a large asset pool it may be a worthwhile investment.
Going to court to settle a divorce can be expensive and time consuming, particularly if there is a large asset pool to divide. A BFA may remove the need to go to court at the end of the relationship, but in itself can be a time consuming and costly exercise to complete.

your payment systems with Laurie Clarke Whenever I look at setting up banking arrangements for new clients of our branch, I always start with a review of their payment systems. What are payment systems? They are the basics of banking, ranging from transaction accounts and internet banking through to at-call investment accounts, direct debits and merchant facilities. From my perspective, it’s the cornerstone of the banking relationship and if it’s not set up right, or frequently reviewed, then problems can arise. If payment systems go wrong, or are set up incorrectly, then it can cause much frustration and additional cost. Most banks have options available to save on fees, but clients also have a shared obligation to educate themselves about their options. Being able to talk to your banker is the first step. Some general points to consider when setting up your transaction banking:
1. Be aware of the timing of your direct debits and ensure clear funds are available to cover them on the due dates. 2. Minimise the use of foreign ATMs. For example, BOQ has a nifty SMS ATM locator service, so you can quickly identify the three nearest ATMs wherever you are in Australia. An alternative is to take out cash when you are doing an EFTPOS transaction at a service station, supermarket or other retailer. 3. Make sure your surplus cash is working for you. Basic transaction accounts tend to pay no or only nominal interest. Perhaps you should consider setting up an at-call savings account alongside your transaction account so you can transfer money back and forth as required to meet your cash-flow needs. 4. Understand the free transaction limits on your account. If you’re likely to exceed the limit, look what other account options are available.
electronic payments versus cheques (both inward and outward), BPAY / EFTPOS systems, multi-pays, payment file uploads for larger numbers of payments, become a direct debit user, etc. 6. Systems reviews such as this are often put off as lower priority by time-poor businesspeople. But most businesses review their supplier arrangements periodically – banking services should be no different. Put it into your diary today. BoQ Maroochydore 5443 2711 laurie.clarke@boq.com.au

data leakage in your business with Miriam Torres In the world of technology, what do cyber criminals gain from attacking our computers?
to ensure correct security solutions are in place so we are not exposed to any vulnerabilities.
The answer is simple. Your confidential data is valuable; think credit card details, driver’s licence details, statements or simply your other personal or business data.
Preventing your business from data leakage might sound expensive, but it is not. Pricing averages at $67 per user, with various solutions available in the marketplace, some offering more flexibility than others in the way they detect and defeat vulnerabilities.
Identity theft is becoming more and more common, but you can do something about it to ensure your data is protected. Consider the following statistics: •• 4.4 million Australians are affected by identity theft each year, and this number is rising. •• The cost of identity theft to Australians is reported to be $3.5 billion annually. As business owners, it is very simple to be focused on the day-to-day running of our enterprises, but it is critical that we take time out

reducing cost of goods sold with Melanie Jacobson How can a business reduce the cost of goods sold? Cost of goods sold includes all the direct costs of selling your particular product. For example, it includes the cost of the product itself, freight to get the product to your store as well as the costs of damaged or missing stock. It also includes wages that contribute to producing your product. Businesses in many industries succeed and fail based on their performance in the cost of goods sold arena. Even though this area of your business is a major cost area, it can also be an area where you can significantly reduce costs. Even a one per cent decrease in cost of goods sold can make a large difference. Some strategies to reduce cost of goods sold include: •• Become a member of a buying group, or buy your stock in bulk – approach suppliers for a deal but ensure buying in bulk doesn’t keep your stock on the shelf too long.
•• Understand discount terms and determine if it is in your favour to use them. •• Monitor wastage – recycle or sell waste products. •• Conduct regular stocktakes to determine your best and worst lines. •• Look into your storage costs – are you using your space effectively, or do you need to order less, more frequently to save on rent?
There are so many ways to reduce your cost of goods sold – the above items are just the tip of the iceberg. Reducing your cost of goods sold can make a huge difference to your bottom line and to your lifestyle, so it is worth putting the time in to review this in detail. •• Transport – look at the location of stored items and various ways to transport your goods. •• Look at your production processes – clear bottlenecks and look at ways to make the production more efficient. •• Quality control – is the cheaper product actually costing you more in repairs? What products do your competitors use? •• Products – do you have the right product selection? Do you know the profit margins on your different product lines? Are you selling more of the most profitable items?

The one person I would most like to meet is … Maggie Beer, seriously the woman looks like a warm hug!
I grew up in … Brisbane, in a big old Queenslander, with a big back yard, complete with mulberry trees and a rusty old swing-set … heaven! I start my day by … having a cup of tea, I literally cannot begin to think until I have it. I would love to be a better … cook / pianist / tennis player / swimmer / singer / wife / mother … you name it, and there’s probably room for a few more. I am at my happiest when … my kids are tucked up in bed, happy and warm, the house is tidy and quiet, my husband is beside me reading in bed and I feel like all is right with my world. Also, when I dance like a fool and don’t care who’s watching!
“
When I am not working I am … playing catch up with everything else. Author and high profile columnist Frances Whiting is a Brisbane girl with a passion for the Sunshine Coast … and a good cup of tea!

When I was growing up I wanted to be … an actress / dancer / spy / singer / detective / Pippy Longstocking. I couldn’t live without … my family … and tea. My most annoying habit is … saying “You know what I mean?’’ when I’m not even sure I do! In five years I hope to be … happy and writing. What makes me laugh out loud is … my friends, my children, my husband, my mother and P. J. Wodehouse. The one person I would most like to meet is … Maggie Beer. The best meal I have had was at … my friend Nush’s. She can cook like an angel.
