PROFILE BOOKS

SPRING 2016

Publishers are there to do their best for their authors and I am confident we do everything we can for ours – to edit, design, print, market and sell their books to great effect around the world. We work hard, but what we do is nothing compared to what our authors go through. Writing any book is an arduous and solitary task, the labour of months if not years of detailed and diligent research, deep thinking, and inspired and disciplined writing. That is true for all the books in this catalogue, but sometimes it goes even beyond that herculean task. Charles Foster lived for six weeks in a badger sett, eating worms and insects on a Welsh hillside, and he was hunted by packs of bloodhounds on Exmoor to understand the reality of Being a Beast (p3), a book that brings a startling new dimension to nature writing. Andrew Dickson has spent his career immersing himself in the Bard, certainly not the same hardship, but essential to create The Globe Guide to Shakespeare (p4) the definitive book on the subject. And an immense amount of research, thought and reflection has gone into the other books featured here, from Malcolm Lambert’s Crusade and Jihad, tracing the history of religious fighting in the Middle East (p22) to Polly Morland’s penetrating analysis in Metamorphosis (p17) of how and why we change. We never cease to be amazed and surprised by our authors and, whatever your tastes and interests, we are confident that you, too, will find plenty to amaze and surprise you in the books in this catalogue. Happy reading. ANDREW FRANKLIN PUBLISHER

MANAGING DIRECTOR

‘The swifts are doing something on our behalf. Their motion is redemptive. They move constantly so that we don’t have to. A badger can be local, living in a hole in a Welsh hill, because there are moving things – and supremely the swifts – that do the movement that’s necessary. They’re the throbbing hearts and tidal chests. They keep the bellows of the world working, enabling slow things to sleep without dying. They keep oxygen bubbling through standing water, so that other things can breathe. To be still is to die. Moving things enable stillness: the exuberantly international enables and legitimises the parochial.’

Being a Beast What is it really like to be a beast? A lyrical exploration of animal life, from swimming with otters to burrowing with badgers

Charles Foster is a curious man, and he wanted to know what life is really like for a badger, an otter, a deer, a fox and a swift. So he tried it. He lived as a badger for six weeks, sleeping in a dirt hole and eating earthworms (apparently they taste of the earth they live in), he came face to face with shrimps as he lived like an otter, and he spent hours curled up in a back garden in East London and rooting in bins like an urban fox. A new departure for nature writing and an intimate look at life in the wild, Being a Beast brings together neuroscience, psychology, naturalism and memoir. Full of thrills, wisdom and beauty, containing moments of humour and joy, Charles Foster gets down and grapples with the beast in us all.

Charles Foster is a Fellow of Green Templeton College at the University of Oxford. He is a qualified vet, teaches medical law and ethics, and he’s a practising barrister. Much of his life has been spent on expeditions; he has run a 150 mile race in the Sahara, skied to the North Pole, and ‘bled in many beautiful and desolate landscapes’. He has written on subjects including travel, evolutionary biology, natural history, anthropology and philosophy. www.charlesfoster.co.uk

SPQR A History of Ancient Rome Published to coincide with a major new BBC series presented by Mary Beard Ancient Rome matters. Its history of empire, conquest, cruelty and excess is something against which we judge ourselves. Its myths, stories, debates and controversies still strike a chord. SPQR is a new look at Roman history from one of the world’s foremost classicists. It explores not only how Rome grew from an insignificant village in central Italy to a power that controlled territory from Spain to Syria, but also how the Romans thought about themselves and their achievements, and why they are still important to us today. Covering a thousand years of history, and casting fresh light on the basics of Roman culture from slavery to running water, this is a definitive history of ancient Rome. Mary Beard is a professor of classics at Newnham College, Cambridge, and the classics editor of the TLS. Her previous books include the bestselling, Wolfson Prize-winning Pompeii, The Roman Triumph, The Parthenon and Confronting the Classics. The Perfect Bet How Science and Maths are Taking the Luck Out of Gambling A guide to how the world’s smartest gamblers are using science to take on the house – and win Gamblers have been trying to figure out how to game the system since our ancestors first made wagers over dice fashioned from knucklebones. Now, in the twenty-first century, professional gamblers are using cutting-edge techniques to tilt the odds further in their favour. At the roulette wheel, card table or racecourse, science is giving us the competitive edge over opponents, casinos and bookmakers. But is there such a thing as a perfect bet? Award-winning writer Adam Kucharski looks beyond probability and statistics to examine how wagers have inspired a plethora of new disciplines – including chaos theory, behavioural psychology, machine learning and game theory – which are not just revolutionising gambling, but changing our fundamental notions about chance, randomness and luck. Explaining why poker is gaming’s last bastion of human superiority over artificial intelligence and how a new breed of algorithms is losing banks and asset traders millions, The Perfect Bet has the inside track on just about any wager you’d care to place. £12.99 288pp Demy trade paperback ISBN: 978 1 78125 546 9 e-ISBN: 978 1 78283 205 8 Popular Science May 2016 UK & Com

JOHN WRIGHT

The Natural History of the Hedgerow A fascinating look behind the garden hedge and into the rich world of hedgerows and boundaries across Great Britain

Ever since the first human settlements 10,000 years ago, hedgerows have been a feature of our landscape and our history. The Romans were keen hedge builders, the Anglo-Saxons gave us the word ‘hege’ and in the nineteenth century villagers rioted against the building of hedged enclosures. Many of these ancient hedgerows still survive, and today they line our motorways, fringe our gardens and criss-cross the countryside. In The Natural History of the Hedgerow, John Wright tells the story of hedgerows past and present, encompassing their long significance in the life of the countryside, their origins and natural history, the ancient crafts involved in their creation, and the huge variety in their ages, sizes, shape, composition and functions. Full of beautiful line drawings and colourful photographs, the book transforms these stalwarts of nature into rich sources of cultural, historical and scientific material. You’ll never look at shrubs in the same way again.

John Wright is a naturalist and forager and one of Britain’s leading experts on fungi. His most recent book is The Naming of the Shrew: A Curious History of Latin Names (Bloomsbury 2014). He is the author of books on hedgerows, seashores, mushrooms and booze in the popular River Cottage Handbook series.

Indian Medicine Stories of life, death and healing from the world’s most fascinating nation

India defies definition, and the story of medicine in India is similarly rich and complex: shaped by unique challenges and opportunities, uniting cutting-edge technological developments with ancient cultural traditions, fuelled by political changes which transformed the lives of millions, and moulded by the energy of forceful individuals. Here, Aarathi Prasad investigates how Indian medicine came to be the way it is. Her travels will take her to bonesetter clinics in Hyderabad and the waiting-rooms of Bollywood’s best plastic surgeons, and introduce her to traditional healers as well as the world-beating heart surgeon who is revolutionising treatment around the globe. From the asthma ‘cure’ that involves swallowing live fish, to mental health initiatives in Mumbai’s Dharavi mega-slum and ground-breaking neuroscience happening inside the Mughal walls of old Delhi, Indian Medicine tells the story of the Indian people, in sickness and in health, and provides a unique perspective on the most diverse and fascinating country in the world.

The Voices Within The History and Science of How We Talk to Ourselves The Royal Society Winton Prize-listed author of Pieces of Light examines how inner speech shapes the way we think Close your eyes and have a thought. Now ask yourself a question: what was it like to think that thought? What we usually call ‘thinking’ is often a kind of speaking by the multiple voices of our consciousness. The Voices Within eavesdrops on those voices: the voices of everyday thought, emotion and memory, but also the distressing or beneficent voices of those who hear others speaking when there is no one around. Authoritative and engaging, drawing on the most up-to-date research and thinking, Charles Fernyhough illuminates the new science of language and thought with a raft of interviews, case studies and historical and cultural examples. The Voices Within is a thought-provoking examination of how words and thoughts weave together in our consciousness and how the conversations that we have with ourselves play a vital part in our thinking.

Brazillionaires Inside the murky, scandalous world of Brazil’s most powerful men

In 2012, Brazilian tycoon Eike Batista was the eighth richest man in the world, his $30bn fortune built on Brazil’s incredible natural resources. By the middle of 2013 he had lost it all, engulfed in scandal. Brazillionaires is a fast-paced account of Batista’s rise and fall, and of the rise and rise of the hyper-rich, not just in Brazil but the world over: a story of helicopter flights, high-speed car crashes and beach-front penthouses. But it is also an investigation into a country apparently poised to become a superpower, yet beset by endemic inequality and corruption. Stefan Zweig said in 1941 that Brazil was the country of the future; Brazilians joke that it always will be. Today, though, that future seems closer than ever. It is the world’s seventh-largest economy, companies such as Heinz, Budweiser and Burger King are now controlled by Brazilian investors and Rio de Janeiro is hosting the 2016 Olympics. The brazillionaires have ridden the crest of Brazil’s wave of progress; through them Brazillionaires tells the story of their country’s past, present and future.

MARGARET MacMILLAN

History’s People Personalities and the Past From the author of The War that Ended Peace: vivid accounts of the men and women who shaped history What difference do individuals make to history? Are we all swept up in the great forces like industrialisation or globalisation that change the world? Clearly not, real people - leaders in particular - and the decisions that they make change our lives irrevocably, whether in deciding to go to war or not, decisive tactical decisions made in the heat of battle, or changing the economic fortunes of countries. So if people - explorers, rulers, politicians, campaigners - make a difference in history, what is the role of personality? What difference did the characters of, for example, Nixon, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Montaigne or Stalin make? And what about less visible but influential people like writers, explorers and diarists? This book asks very big questions about the role of individuals, their behaviour and how personalities can affect - for better or worse - millions of people and the future of countries. Margaret MacMillan is the renowned author of the international bestsellers The War that Ended Peace, Nixon in China and Peacemakers: The Paris Peace Conference of 1919 which won the Duff Cooper Prize, the Hessell-Tiltman Prize, the Samuel Johnson Prize, and the 2003 Governor General’s Literary Award in Canada. £12.99 224pp Demy hardback ISBN: 978 1 78125 512 4 e-ISBN: 978 1 78283 189 1 History February 2016 UK & Com ex Au, NZ, Can

The Ways of The World The essential anthology of writings by the world’s leading Marxist thinker

This book presents a sequence of landmark works in David Harvey’s intellectual journey over five decades. It shows how experiencing the riots, despair and injustice of 1970s Baltimore led him to seek an explanation of capitalist inequalities via Marx and to a sustained intellectual engagement that has made him the world’s leading exponent of Marx’s work. The book takes the reader through the development of his unique synthesis of Marxist method and geographical understanding that has allowed him to develop a series of powerful insights into the ways of the world, from the new mechanics of imperialism, crises in financial markets and the effectiveness of car strikers in Oxford, to the links between nature and change, why Sacré Coeur was built in Paris, and the meaning of the postmodern condition. David Harvey is renowned for originality, acumen and the transformative value of his insights. This book shows why. David Harvey is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at the City University of New York Graduate School where he has taught since 2001. His course on Marx’s Capital, developed with students over forty years, has been downloaded by over two million people since appearing on the CUNY website in mid2008. His book The Enigma of Capital was published by Profile in 2010 to international acclaim.

Geography A clear and accessible introduction to geography Geography gives shape to our innate curiosity; cartography is older than writing. Channelling our twin urges to explore and understand, geographers uncover the hidden connections of human existence, from infant mortality in inner cities to the decisionmakers who fly overhead in executive jets, from natural disasters to over-use of fossil fuels. In this incisive introduction to the subject, Danny Dorling and Carl Lee reveal geography as a science which tackles all of the biggest issues that face us today, from globalisation to equality, from sustainability to population growth, from climate change to changing technology – and the complex interactions between them all. Metamorphosis 19 True Stories About Change Can stories help to change your life? Polly Morland explores true stories of ordinary and extraordinary transformation What makes a violinist become a policeman, or a monk fall in love? How does someone lose eighteen stone in as many months or a follower of radical Islam turn his back on holy war? And how does a family adapt to the brain injury that changes their son or brother beyond recognition? These and other stories combine with a wealth of smart thinking from psychology, philosophy, literature and science as Polly Morland unravels the mysteries and mechanisms of human change. Most of us would like to change something about ourselves, although too often we feel that we can’t. Yet change is not an event – it is a process at which we are more skilled than we realise, a story we are already good at telling. Exploring how some people succeed in shaping their lives, like master storytellers, toward the happy ending of their choosing, Polly Morland shows that change is possible for us all. During fifteen years as a documentary-maker, Polly Morland worked as producer/director for the BBC and Channel Four, as well as for PBS and the Discovery Channel. Her first book, The Society of Timid Souls won a Jerwood Award and was longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award.

Chancing It The laws of chance - and how they can work for you Key insights into how probability affects our lives by one of Britain’s leading science writers We’re all familiar with the workings of chance in our lives, from lucky breaks and bad bets to strange coincidences. They can make us jump for joy or leave us feeling persecuted – or just plain spooked. Yet behind all the apparent randomness lie hard and fast laws, and understanding how they work can transform our attitude to the ups and downs of life. But as this groundbreaking book reveals, these same laws can do far more, giving us powerful tools for dealing with uncertainty and risk to our wealth, health and happiness. Using compelling real-life cases Robert Matthews demonstrates the astounding power and reach of the laws of chance. He shows how their insights often defy commonsense, overturning many widely-held beliefs. Drawing on his own academic research, he also reveals how to spot basic flaws in the claims of experts in fields ranging from science and medicine to finance. The chances are this will be one of the most valuable books you’ll ever read.

MARK STEVENSON

We Do Things Differently Entrepreneur and stand-up comedian Mark Stevenson introduces fifteen innovators breaking the rules to make our world better

Our systems are failing. Right across education, healthcare and government, food production, energy supply and commerce, old models are creaking under the weight of modern challenges. As the world’s population nears 10 billion, it’s clear we need new approaches. In We Do Things Differently, Mark Stevenson seeks out the innovators who are challenging the status quo and pioneering new ways to make our world more sustainable and equitable. From off-grid African villages ‘technology leapfrogging’ the West, to the boardrooms of (unsung) corporations that are taking the environment seriously, via patient-led groups transforming healthcare and new systems of citizen government that are helping Brazilian Favelas find a new future, We Do Things Differently travels the world to find the advance guard re-imagining our future. Populated by extraordinary (and often hilarious) characters, We Do Things Differently paints an enthralling picture, offering a window on, and a road map to a different future. For the powers-that-be it might make uncomfortable reading.

Mark Stevenson is a writer, entrepreneur and ideas broker who speaks regularly on future narratives, innovation, belief systems and learning. He is the author of the critically acclaimed An Optimist’s Tour of the Future which is being turned into a TV series. He is an adviser to the Virgin Earth Challenge and Trillion Fund.

Not by fossil fuels. Energy experts all say the same thing: solar photovoltaics (PV) is our future. Reports from universities, investment banks, international institutions and large investors agree. It’s not about whether the switch from fossil fuels to solar power will happen, but when. This book tracks the transition away from coal, oil and gas to a world in which the limitless energy of the sun provides much of the energy the 10 billion people of this planet will need. It examines both the solar future and how we will get there, and the ways in which we will provide stored power when the sun isn’t shining. In this delightfully readable book, art expert and artist Hugh Moss presents a persuasive and controversial new theory of art that should help everyone to enjoy art more, and to feel more confident in their judgements about it. Much accepted thinking about art, he argues, is the result of intellectual tyranny: to fully appreciate a work of art, we need to combine intellect and reason with the transcendental side of consciousness. Not easy, admittedly, but if you can reach your own enlightened view, immensely rewarding. Written with a light touch, practical, intelligent, provocative, seasoned with irreverence and wit, and wonderfully illustrated by Peter Suart, this is a book that anyone interested in art will find stimulating.

Hugh Moss ran a gallery specialising in Asian art in London’s West End before moving to Hong Kong in the 1970s. An accomplished artist and an acknowledged expert in Chinese snuff bottles and works of art, he has worked closely with the world’s leading auction houses for over fifty years.

Crusade and Jihad From the medieval origins of crusade and jihad to their contemporary meanings in the West and Middle East

Crusade and Jihad looks afresh at the Christian and Islamic struggle to control the holy places of Palestine and the Middle East between the seventh and thirteenth centuries. Crusade and jihad are often reckoned to be two sides of the same coin: both resonate on opposing sides in the war on terror. Malcolm Lambert shows that this simple opposition conceals important differences in their origins and meanings. He compares their early development in a narrative that places equal emphasis on the complex inner histories of Christendom and Islam, both of which were and are subject to internal tensions and dissent. The final chapters consider the long aftermath of crusade and jihad, including the nineteenthcentury French imperial crusade to bring civilisation to the world; the benign heritage of the Knights Hospitallers in the St John Ambulance Brigade; and the jihadists of the world today.

MORIZ SCHEYER

Asylum A survivor’s flight from Nazi-occupied Vienna through wartime France A miraculous memoir of escape, survival and art in wartime Europe

In 1943, Moriz Scheyer was in hiding at a convent in the Dordogne when he began drafting Asylum, the extraordinarily tense, moving and at times almost miraculous account of his persecution in Vienna and flight to wartime France. An arts editor for Vienna’s principal newspaper before the German invasion in 1938, Scheyer was friends with some of the city’s great artists, from Stefan Zweig to Gustav Mahler, and an important literary journalist in his own right. Here he turns his acerbic wit and critical eye to his own remarkable experiences, tracing events from the Anschluss in Austria to Paris immediately pre-war and under occupation; the Exodus from Paris to life in two different concentration camps; an escape attempt, contact with the Resistance, and, finally, a dramatic rescue and clandestine life in a convent. Written while in hiding in 1944, this memoir is rare and riveting in its immediate perspective of events. After Scheyer’s death in 1948, his stepson – who disliked the book and its all-encompassing denunciation of the German people – destroyed the manuscript. Or thought he did. Recently, the only remaining copy was discovered in the family’s attic by Peter Singer, who has translated and provided an afterword to this unique recollection of the holocaust.

A Cabinet of Philosophical Curiosities A Collection of Puzzles, Oddities, Riddles and Dilemmas An entertaining miscellany of logical curiosities – from anecdotes to puzzles and puns – found outside the classroom Logic has made some men rich. Inside this book you will learn of John Eck (who debated Luther in 1519): he devised a sequence of contracts that sidestepped usury laws. Voltaire set himself up for life by exploiting a fallacy in the construction of a Parisian lottery. And logic is for altruists. You will discover how General Benjamin Butler used other-centric reasoning to protect runaway slaves, and why Horatio Nelson believed his phantom arm demonstrated his immortality. Historical snapshots of logic in action are interwoven with anecdotes, puzzles and games; tributes to great logicians such as Lewis Carroll and Arthur Prior; and short lives of philosophers from Plato to John Searle. Concise essays on great debates and problems in philosophy sit alongside accounts of arresting aspects of truth, falsehood, reason and human utterances. There are dialogues, cures and insults, paradoxes, poems and puns.

Historically Inevitable? Turning Points of the Russian Revolution The essential analysis of the events leading up to October 1917 and beyond, by the world’s foremost experts on Russian history Marx held that the progression of society from capitalism to communism was ‘historically inevitable’. In Russia in 1917 it seemed that Marx’s theory was being born out in reality. But was the Russian Revolution really inevitable? This collection of fourteen contributions from the world’s leading Russian scholars attempts to answer the question by looking back at the key turning points. From the assassination of Stolypin in 1905 through to the appropriation of church property in 1922, and focusing especially on the events in 1917, Historically Inevitable? is a forensic account of Russia’s road to revolution. Each contribution gives not only an incisive narrative account of the events but also features, for the first time, an intriguing counter-factual analysis of what might have gone differently. Historically Inevitable? explains how Russia, more through blind luck than any historical inevitability, became the world’s first communist state. Featuring contributions from: Donald Crawford • Sean McMeekin • Dominic Lieven • Orlando Figes • Richard Sakwa • Douglas Smith • Martin Sixsmith • Simon Dixon • Boris Kolonitsky • Richard Pipes • Edvard Radzinsky • Catriona Kelly • Erik Landis • Evan Mawdsley Sir Tony Brenton was a British diplomat from 1975 to 2009, completing his career as Charge d’Affaires in Washington, and then Ambassador in Moscow. He is now a Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge, writing a book on the Russia of Peter the Great, and is a regular commentator on contemporary Russian issues.

SIMON BILL

Artist in Residence A modern (art) farce

For our drunken anti-hero, a YBA-style painter whose moment in the spotlight has long since faded, life is looking bleak. His curator girlfriend has dumped him; the only dealer with any time for him is the one who sells him drugs; and he’s reduced to snaffling free drinks at endless private views. But his luck changes when he’s offered a job as artist in residence at a neurological institute. Enthralled by the characters and conditions he encounters – and smitten by the beautiful amnesiac Emily – his thoughts turn to romance, as well as the possibility of reviving his moribund career with a neuro-inspired show. Meanwhile, all is not as it seems at the shiny new institute. In this hilarious modern art farce, with a neurotwist, Simon Bill lifts the lid on the venal, noveltyseeking world of London’s contemporary art scene while enlightening us on the fascinating workings of the human brain. ‘A novel of dark satire ... laugh-out-loud funny.’ Peter Carty, Independent ‘I bloody loved it!’ Gary Hume £8.99 288pp B format paperback with flaps ISBN: 978 1 90874 557 6 e-ISBN: 978 1 90874 558 3 Fiction May 2016 World

Ice A novel The epic of island life that has gripped Finland In the summer of 1947, a young priest, his wife and baby daughter arrive by mail boat at a tiny church island. They are to take over its draughty homestead from where Petter is to minister to the scattered and subtly divided community. In this deeply evocative tale, Ulla-Lena Lundberg draws us into the minutiae of an austere yet purposeful life where the demands of self-sufficiency – cows to milk and sheep to graze – are tempered by the kindness of neighbours. With each season, the family’s love of the island grows and when the winter brings ice a new and tentative link is created. Told through the eyes of Petter, the wholehearted if naive novice priest, and Mona, his tough-minded wife, a story unfolds that is as immersive as it is heartrending. Winner of the Finlandia prize and nominated for the Nordic Critics Prize, Ice was a huge bestseller in Finland.

Ulla-Lena Lundberg is an acclaimed and prizewinning Finland-Swedish poet, ethnologist and author. She has published more than twenty works of fiction and essays. Born in Kökar in the Åland islands, she has lived in Japan, Africa and Siberia, and now lives in Porvoo, Finland. Ulla-Lena is featured on a recent Åland Islands stamp.

Warren Buffett’s Ground Rules Words of Wisdom from the Partnership Letters of the World’s Greatest Investor Easy-to-follow ground rules from one of the world’s most successful investors At the age of twenty-six, Warren Buffett founded Buffett Partnership Limited, which lasted from 1956 to 1970. During this time he wrote thirtythree letters to his small but growing group of partners. These letters chronicle his thoughts, approaches and reflections in the period immediately prior to his Berkshire Hathaway tenure – one that saw an unprecedented record of investing success. Warren Buffett’s Ground Rules brings together, for the first time, and with Buffett’s permission, the key investment principles and teachings the letters reveal. Here you will find the basis for Buffett’s contrarian diversification strategy, his almost religious celebration of compounding interest, and his tactics for bettering market results by at least 10 per cent annually. Quoting extensively and directly from Buffett’s own writing, equity research expert Jeremy Miller reveals the timeless advice the letters contain, demonstrating a set of highly effective investment strategies that continue to resonate today.

Jeremy Miller works in institutional sales at Vertical Research Partners, a leading New York City-based equity research and consulting firm. His clients include investors working at some of the largest money management firms in world – Blackrock, Goldman Sachs, Paulson & Co, GLG, among others.

Stupid Why smart people act dumb – and what we can do about it Welcome to the idea of functional stupidity: how to recognise it, why it’s attractive and how to guard against it Something strange is happening in our knowledge economy: organisations everywhere are encouraging smart people to do stupid things. At its extremes, this can be catastrophic: witness the institutional blindness in financial services that led to the crisis of 2008. But we can all relate to more everyday examples of losing touch with the need to question the dubious and criticise the absurd, from unsustainable management fads or the cult of leadership and strategy through to an over-reliance on brand and image. Stupid tackles head-on the pros and cons of a culture of questioning and challenge. Harmony and action at all costs can be attractive and can also bring short-term benefits. But, ultimately, the book is a wake-up call to all of us to be alert to behaviours that discourage critical thinking, and to use our intelligence to the full in the interests of personal satisfaction, organisational success and the performance of the wider economy and society as a whole.
