PROFILE BOOKS SPRING 2017
In our Pursuit to find something positive to say about the summer of Brexit, Trump and terror, we have seen A Heavy Reckoning for politicians shown to be no Smarter than a Chimpanzee and have become entangled in thinking about the Fate of the West. And, to be honest, it’s not a situation that encourages Superfandom of any of our leaders or institutions. Since the Dawn of Christianity we have not seen the world fracture in this way: you could say we have been There and Back Again. But whether you are Making Sense of it all or simply think ‘Eat Me’, all of us are forced to admit that, today, That’s the Way It Crumbles. However, before we make some radical decisions and choose a Mafia Life, or escape abroad like the famous Durrells of Corfu, we need to take a stand and figure out Where the Line is Drawn. In times of crisis we publishers turn to books that encourage Self-Reliance and that challenge us to think Beyond Infinity. So instead of taking the Night Train out of here, we advise you to go Rogue, pay attention to the Sound and Principles of the world around you, to be Mega interesting and to aim for the utopia of a Super-Fast Prime Time Ultimate Nation – like A Greedy Queen reaching for the last slice of pie. Happy reading. ANDREW FRANKLIN PUBLISHER

That’s The Way It Crumbles The AmericaniZation of English Why Americanisms must stop. Period. Are we tired of hearing that fall is a season, being offered fries and told about the latest movie? Yeah. Have we noticed the sly interpolation of Americanisms? You betcha. Are we outraged? Hell, yes. But do we do anything? Too much hassle. Until now. In That’s the Way It Crumbles Matthew Engel presents a call to arms against British linguistic impoverishment. He traces the American invasion of our language from the early days of the New World via the dance hall and talkies right up to the Apple and Microsoft-dominated present day, and explores the fate of other languages facing linguistic takeover bids. Engel explains how America’s cultural supremacy affects the British way of life, and how our language includes words we no longer even think of as Americanisms. Part battle cry, part love song, part elegy, this book celebrates the strange, banal, precious and endangered parts of our uncommon common language. Matthew Engel is a journalist and author. He writes regularly for the Guardian and Financial Times and was the editor of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack for twelve years. His books include Eleven Minutes Late: A Train Journey to the Soul of Britain, Extracts from the Red Notebooks and Engel’s England. £16.99 256pp Demy hardback ISBN: 978 1 78125 668 8 e-ISBN: 978 1 78283 262 1 Language / Social History May 2017 World All Languages Tr US 2

The Durrells of Corfu Learn more about the Durrells after the hit ITV programme
Simon Nye’s TV series The Durrells is loosely based on Gerald Durrell’s Corfu Trilogy, which is in turn based on actual events. Michael Haag’s book covers the true background to the Durrell family’s years in Corfu, including their time in India where all the children were born, and where their father, a brilliant civil engineer, died. It recalls the real life characters the Durrells encountered on Corfu, notably biologist and poet Theodore Stephanides, and taxi driver, Spiros Halikiopoulos. And Haag tells how the Durrells left Corfu, including Margo’s return to join the Greek resistance, and Leslie’s romance in England with the family’s Corfite maid, Maria Kondos. Lawrence and Gerald Durrell’s biographies are well-known, but little has previously been written of Margo, Leslie and Louisa. Haag has fascinating stories to tell of them all. Michael Haag knew Lawrence and Gerald Durrell (and met Margo), and is currently writing a biography of Lawrence for Yale University Press. Haag has also written widely on the Egyptian, Classical and Medieval worlds including, for Profile, The Templars and The Quest for Mary Magdalene. He lives in London.

The Greedy Queen Eating with Victoria
In the nineteenth century, a food revolution took place from the highest table to the humblest. This is a biography of Britain’s most iconic monarch and a look at Victorian cooking and eating. From Queen Victoria’s early years on milk and bread to her indigestion and over-eating as an elderly woman, this book will examine her diet, likes and dislikes, and opinions of those around her. This book will also look below stairs. Victoria was surrounded by servants, but there was one category more fundamental but more completely hidden: her cooks. From her greed to her selfishness and her reliance on food as a lifelong companion, with her when so many others died or were forced away, Victoria had a huge impact on how we eat today. Annie Gray gives a new perspective on Britain’s longest reigning monarch through the one thing dearer to her than almost anything: her stomach.

Night Trains The Rise and Fall of the Sleeper Bestselling author Andrew Martin recaptures night trains’ glamour and intrigue Night trains have long fascinated us. Authors from Agatha Christie to Graham Greene have used them to tell of romance, intrigue and decadence against a rolling background of dramatic landscapes. The reality could often be as thrilling: early British travellers on the Orient Express were advised to carry a revolver (and teapot). In Night Trains, Andrew Martin relives the golden age of European sleeper trains by using their modern-day equivalents. Night trains have fallen on hard times but the intriguing characters and exotic atmospheres have survived. Martin uncovers modern instances of European unity – and otherwise – as he traverses the continent, and he experiences his own smaller dramas, as he fails to find crucial connecting stations, ponders the mystery of the compartment dog, and becomes embroiled in his very own night train whodunit. Andrew Martin is a journalist and author. He has written for the Evening Standard, Sunday Times, Independent on Sunday, Daily Telegraph and New Statesman. His previous books for Profile include Underground, Overground and Belles and Whistles; his ‘Jim Stringer’ novels based around railways are published by Faber.

Eat Me A Natural and Unnatural History of Cannibalism Get your teeth into this entertaining and informative look at the world’s greatest taboo. Cannibalism. The stuff of urban legends and ancient myths, airline crashes and Captain Cook. But while we thrill at the the black widow’s mating habits or the fate of the nineteenth-century Donner Party pioneers, cannibalism belongs to history – or at least to the weird, rare and far away. Doesn’t it? Here, zoologist Bill Schutt digs his teeth in and finds a surprising, unsettling answer. From Psycho to the Eucharist, cannibalism is woven into our history, culture and medicine. And in the natural world, it is both a survival strategy practised by polar bears and hamsters alike and an evolutionary adaption, like the one that allows sand tiger sharks who consume all but one of their siblings in the womb. Dark, fascinating and curious, Eat Me is a story of colonialism, religion, anthropology, dinosaurs and humans, from the ‘laughing death’ disease kuru to the BSE crisis. And – of course – our intrepid author tries it for himself.

Sound Stories of Music, Connection and Hearing Lost and Found A powerful and personal exploration of deafness and hearing In 1997, Bella Bathurst began to go deaf. Within a few months, she had lost half her hearing, and the rest was slipping away. She wasn’t just missing punchlines, she was missing most of the conversation – and all the jokes. For the next twelve years deafness shaped her life, until, in 2009, everything changed again. Sound explores what it’s like to lose your hearing and – as Bella eventually did – to regain it, and what this teaches about listening, silence, music and noise. She investigates the science behind deafness, hearing loss among musicians, soldiers and factory workers, sign language, and what the deaf know that the hearing don’t. If sight gives us the world, then hearing – or listening – gives us each other. But, as this engaging and intelligent examination reveals, our relationship with sound is both personal and far more complex than we might expect.
Bella Bathurst is a writer and photojournalist. Her books include The Lighthouse Stevensons, which won the 1999 Somerset Maugham Award, The Wreckers, which became a BBC Timewatch documentary, and The Bicycle Book, which was shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 2011.

Giro d’Italia The Story of the World’s Most Beautiful Bike Race Published to celebrate the Giro’s 100th Race The Giro d’Italia, more demanding and unpredictable than the Tour de France, is as dramatic and characterful as Italy itself. Heroism, suffering, feuds, betrayals and tradition under threat from modernity, all play out against a landscape of extremes. First contested in 1909, interrupted only by the First World War, the Giro began as an ordeal with 400km stages, night-time starts and fixed-gear bicycles on rough tracks. After 1945 it was animated by the near-miraculous ‘Il Campionissimo’, Fausto Coppi, his feud with Gino Bartali and his scandalous lifestyle. The Giro has given birth to many of cycling’s greatest myths. Giro d’Italia tells these stories and brings to life their iconic protagonists. In doing so, it also shows how much the legend of the Giro reveals of Italian society and its many contradictions.

The Hardmen Legends of the Cycling Gods On the toughest cyclists ever, from the Velominati, creators of The Rules In cycling, suffering brings glory: a rider’s value can be judged by their results but also by their panache and heroism. Hear about Chris Froome riding on at the Tour de France with a broken wrist and Geraint Thomas finishing it with a broken pelvis, and you’ll never look at a Premier League footballer’s diving theatrics the same way again. In The Hardmen, the writers behind cycling superblog Velominati.com, tell the stories and illuminate the myths of not just the greatest cyclists ever, but the toughest. From Eddy Merckx to Beryl Burton, and from Marianne Vos to Edwig Van Hooydonk, the book lays bare the secrets of their extraordinary and inspirational endurance in the face of pain, danger and disaster. Their first book, The Rules: The Way of the Cycling Disciple was published to great success in 2013.

Anquetil, Alone The legend of Jacques Anquetil, controversial 60s cycling star
Jacques Anquetil was arrogant and iconoclastic, with a relaxed attitude to rules – including those about drugs – and morals. His womanising appalled conservative French society, even as his five Tour de France wins enthralled it. But Paul Fournel always preferred him to his great rival, working-class hero Raymond Poulidor, and followed Anquetil’s career from childhood with the passion of a fan and the eye of a poet. In this stunningly original biography of a complex and divisive character, Fournel - author of the seminal Vélo - blends elements of memoir and imagined autobiography, to create a literary cycling classic as captivating as Tim Krabbé’s The Rider.

There and Back Again The world of things and the end of globalisation Globalisation was once the vision of the future; not any more. How we make things is changing, and with it the world order. For the past thirty years or more, the global economy has been run based on three big assumptions: globalisation will continue to increase; trade is the route to growth and development; and economic power is moving from West to East. But what if all these are wrong? There and Back Again shows how the world trading structure has already begun to shift, with irrevocable consequences for the global economy. Volatile oil prices, the pressures of sustainability and the availability of new technologies – such as 3D printing and automation – mean that companies, from General Electric to Apple, are beginning to move production away from distant countries and back home. If robots can make everything, why would companies use Chinese workers? Power is shifting, trade is shrinking and making things is revolutionising. Finbarr Livesey explores the making of this new world economic order, revealing the processes that lie behind it and showing how no one will be left untouched by its arrival.
Dr Finbarr Livesey is a lecturer in public policy at the University of Cambridge, before which he spent ten years working in the Engineering department at Cambridge. He previously worked in technology development and continues to consult for national governments and multinational corporations.

Along the way, Ambridge debunks common myths about animals and reveals the bizarre and wonderful science at the extreme end of zoology, where animal psychologists design personality tests for donkeys and logic problems for pigeons. Where the Line is Drawn Crossing Boundaries in Occupied Palestine A powerful exploration of friendship across the Israel-Palestine border As a boy Raja was entranced by an Israeli postage stamp in his uncle’s album, intrigued by tales of a green land beyond the border. It was impossible then to know how important Israel would become to him or to foresee his Palestine home’s occupation. Later, as a lawyer, he worked to halt land seizures and towards peace, and made friends with several Israelis. But as life became increasingly unbearable under occupation, it was impossible to escape politics or the past, and friendships and hopes were put to the test. Brave, intelligent and deeply controversial, Where the Line is Drawn explores the effect of occupation on the most intimate aspects of life. Looking back over decades of political turmoil, Shehadeh traces the impact on bonds of friendship across the IsraelPalestine border, and asks whether bitter enemies can come together to forge a common future. Raja Shehadeh is Palestine’s leading writer. He is the author of Occupation Diaries, Language of War, Language of Peace and winner of the 2008 Orwell Prize for Palestinian Walks. Rogues’ Gallery A History of Art and Its Dealers A Sotheby’s art expert exposes five centuries of history and scandals Philip Hook takes the lid off the world of art dealing to reveal the brilliance, cunning, greed and daring of its practitioners. In a richly anecdotal narrative he describes the rise, and frequently the fall, of the extraordinary men and women who over the centuries have made it their business to sell art to kings, merchants, nobles, entrepreneurs and museums. From its beginnings in Antwerp, where paintings were sometimes sold by weight, to the hauteur of the contemporary galleries of London, Paris and New York, art dealing is about identifying what is intangible but desirable, and finding a client for whom it is irresistible. Those in the profession range from tailors, spies and the occasional anarchist to scholars, aristocrats and connoisseurs, each variously motivated by greed, ambition or the will to win. Rogues’ Gallery is learned, witty and irresistibly readable.

The Fate of the West The Decline and Revival of the World’s Most Valuable Political Idea A former Economist editor-in-chief on reversing western liberal democracies’ decline
When faced with instability and uncertainty, it is tempting for states to close borders, hoard wealth and solidify power. This insularity, together with increased inequality and wealth threatens the role of the West as a font of stability, prosperity and security. Part of the problem is that western liberal democracy has been suborned, with special interest groups such as bankers accruing too much power. How is this threat to be countered? States such as Sweden in the 1990s, California at different times or Britain under Thatcher all halted stagnation by clearing away the powers of interest groups and restoring their societies’ ability to evolve. To survive, the West needs to be open and flexible, to reinvent its welfare systems and reimagine education, to embrace automation and rethink the way people work, and to adapt in many other ways.

In the light of the UK’s Brexit vote and the rise of nationalist and anti-establishment sentiment in America and Europe, The Fate of the West is a timely analysis of why western liberal democracies have been so successful, how they are failing and how they must change if they are to recover their vigour and thrive.

The Dawn of Christianity People and Gods in an Age of Miracles and Magic Why did Christianity take root and spread in ancient Rome?
Exploring Christianity’s origins, Robert Knapp looks at why it was that people in Judea and then in the Roman and Greek worlds became susceptible to this new religion, via an exploration of religion and everyday life from 200 bc to the end of the first century. Survival and upholding the honour and wellbeing of family, ancestors and offspring were the chief preoccupations of Jews and polytheists and in both cases, people turned first to supernatural powers. According to need, season and place, polytheists consulted and placated vast constellations of gods, while Jews worshipped and contended with an almighty and jealous deity. Professor Knapp considers why either Jew or polytheist would dispense with existing methods for a new model. What was it about this new religion that led people to change beliefs they had held for millennia, and which within four centuries of its messiah’s birth, led it to transform the western world?

The Moor’s Last Stand How seven centuries of Muslim rule in Spain came to an end On Spain’s last Moorish king and Spanish Islam’s denouement The Moor’s Last Stand presents the poignant story of Boabdil, the last Muslim king of Granada. Betrayed by his family and undermined by faction and internal conflict, Boabdil was defeated in 1492 by the forces of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of the newly united kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. The Christian victory marked the completion of the long Christian reconquest of Spain and ended seven centuries in which Christians, Muslims and Jews had, for the most part, lived peacefully and profitably together. Five centuries after his death, Boabdil continues to be a potent symbol of resistance to the forces of western Christendom, and his image endures in contemporary culture. Elizabeth Drayson presents a vivid account of Boabdil’s life and times and considers the impact of his defeat then and now.
Elizabeth Drayson is a member of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Cambridge, and senior college lecturer at Murray Edwards College and Peterhouse. Her books include The King and the Whore: King Roderick and La Cava (2007) and The Lead Books of Granada (2013).

FRANK CLOSE
Theories of Everything An account of past, present and future theories of everything. Theories of everything, physicist Frank Close argues, are explanations of the universe which draw on all relevant branches of knowledge. Such accounts may reign supreme for centuries but, often as a result of the advances they have enabled, a new discovery is made which the current theory cannot explain. Moving from Newton’s work on gravity and motion in the seventeenth century, to thermodynamics and Maxwell’s laws of electromagnetism in the nineteenth, to Planck’s and Dirac’s quantum physics in the twentieth, Professor Close turns to contemporary physics and the power and limitations of the current theory of everything. The cycle in which one theory of everything is challenged and replaced by another is continuing right now. £8.99 160pp B format trade paperback ISBN: 978 1 78125 751 7 eISBN: 978 1 78283 309 3 Popular Science March 2017 World All Languages Tr US
ANDREW GANT
Music The best concise introduction to a very large subject: Music. Music has been central to life since the dawn of humankind and is intimately bound up with language. Andrew Gant introduces us to its history and many genres and manifestations; how composers compose, players play and singers sing; how musical styles develop, the ways they fall in and out of fashion, and why music – dancing and love songs, for example – is universal in human culture. He shows how music can be composed and used to stir patriotism, instill courage, reinforce identity, sell a product, or make a political point. And he goes beyond humans to examine music in the natural world in the creativity of birdsong. This is, in short, the ideal concise introduction to a very big subject. £8.99 160pp B format trade paperback ISBN: 978 1 78125 642 8 eISBN: 978 1 78283 251 5 Music March 2017 World All Languages Tr US 26

Truth What is truth and why does it matter?
Truth has always been a thorny topic. How does it work? Who decides what it is? And why is it so important? In this lucid introduction to the topic, leading scholar Simon Blackburn describes the main approaches to the notion of truth and how these relate to different perspectives on belief, interpretation, facts, knowledge and action. He then looks at how these ideas can be applied to: - aesthetics, taste and judgement of art; - ethics: how people decide how they should (or should not) live; - reason and rational truth; - religious belief and the ultimate cause of the cosmos. Understanding truth has practical value in every aspect of life and whether you are voting in an election or finding an excuse for being late, Professor Blackburn’s clear and incisive account will illuminate your choice, and stimulate, inform and entertain. £8.99 144pp B format trade paperback ISBN: 978 1 78125 722 7 e-ISBN: 978 1 78283 292 8 Philosophy March 2017 World All Languages Tr US

Superfandom How Our Obsessions are Changing How We Buy and Who We Are An in-depth look at fandom and how it’s transforming business
Fandom isn’t just a noun: fans create, engage, discuss. Fans are equally valuable to Starbucks, Star Wars, Chanel and Chelsea FC. The ubiquitous plea to ‘Like us on Facebook’ heralds a new reality: consumers buy a product; fans make it buyable. Superfandom explores the explosion of modern fandom and its impact on culture and business. Through ample case studies, experts Zoe FraadeBlanar and Aaron Glazer delve into the sociology and psychology of fan culture, and how it changes the way business works. The internet has given businesses ways to talk directly to their fans, hear their needs and desires, and react in real time. Never before have fans had so much clout. As the authors reveal, we are entering an age of fandom convergence - one in which fan activities and communities become intrinsic to the brand experience. Practical, investigative and reflective, Superfandom is an indispensable guide to this brave new world.

The Mosaic Principle The six dimensions of a successful life and career An inspirational new model for a successful, diversified life The world is an increasingly interconnected place; in work as in life, we need a broad range of experiences to widen our knowledge, perform our best and feel most fulfilled. But in education and business there is the growing feeling that we are being led down a rabbit hole of narrow expertise, forced to specialise or shuttled into niche positions that don’t make use of our wider talents. In The Mosaic Principle, Nick Lovegrove encourages us to take the broad view, showing how we can develop the mosaic of skills we need to make the most of ourselves and our careers, to the benefit of all. Drawing on more than three decades of personal experience across sectors, and examining the inspiring stories of extraordinary people, historical and contemporary, Lovegrove sets out the six dimensions of the successful generalist, skills that provide the ways and means for taking unorthodox steps to encourage us to live broader, better lives.
Nick Lovegrove is US Managing Partner of the Brunswick Group. He previously spent over thirty years at McKinsey & Company, advised the British Prime Minister’s strategy unit, and was a board member at the Royal Shakespeare Company and TeachFirst and a senior fellow at Harvard University.
