WINTER 2017

Snowy Owl The snowy owl hunts during the day, as well as in the dusk. Its flight is firm and protracted, although smooth and noiseless. It passes swiftly over its hunting ground, seizes its prey by instantaneously falling on it, and generally devours it on the spot. When the objects of its pursuit are on wing, such as ducks, grouse, or pigeons, it gains upon them by urging its speed, and strikes them somewhat in the manner of the Peregrine Falcon. from the editor

LEARN, ADAPT AND KEEP ON GOING It is now two years since we last convened for a picture framing trade show in Australia. The industry has seen a lot of changes in that time, although it would seem the rate of change may have slowed down. It is interesting to reflect that there are still quite a few people left in the industry who were here in the last decade of the last century–a time that now seems unrecognizable to us today. That was a time when you could buy moulding in quantities as small as 30 meters. There was no such thing as free corner samples, and certainly no such thing as free freight. In real terms, commodities such as foam core and glass and most of our supplies today are actually cheaper now than they were back then. And yet, it seems the industry was a lot more successful and more profitable. Of course, many of us were still in a fledgling stage of understanding conservation framing. We were gradually shifting from MDF to foam core as our preferred backing, and moving ‘up market’ to acid free mat boards. Most framers had not even heard of rag board or preservation practices. But over time educators, publications, and trade shows were able to improve our awareness of the best practices and techniques available. Gradually the standard of framing in Australia, along with the rest of the world, improved significantly. We learnt how to hinge our artwork rather than glue it down. We learnt to stretch our needle works rather than staple them to a board. We learnt to keep glass off valuable art work, and countless other basic preservation techniques and principles. We also learnt a lot about design and how best to present the artwork brought in for us to frame. We realised we needed to know more about the objects that were being placed in our care, and consider them far more carefully in our framing design choices. Slowly we also came to realise that a large part of our work was more closely aligned with the art and design world than the world of manufacturing or carpentry. We watched Australia’s love affair with renovating grow as reality TV filled our screens with endless home 4 PROFILE

‘make overs’. We came to accept that we might also need to be aware of things like ‘colour trends’, ‘period styles’, ‘themes’ and ‘interior design directions’. We lived through unprecedented ‘technological disruption’, the globalization of the economy, and experienced first hand the struggle for the ‘bricks and mortar’ store to remain a viable option. And yet, the fact that we were able to learn and adapt to changing times, meant we were able to survive while many other industries involved in ‘making things’ were not. Certainly, we are not as big an industry as we used to be. We almost certainly are not as profitable an industry as we used to be. But we still are in fact an industry. Which in many ways is quite an achievement in light of other industries that have fallen by the wayside in the last quarter century. And the only way we will continue to survive is if we keep on learning and adapting. In some part, that survival has been aided by of the efforts and dedication of the many industry groups, associations, educators, and suppliers that have put an enormous amount of work into promoting industry networks, training, and resources to help all of us out there to learn, adapt and keep on going. Industry events such as trade shows have also played an important part in that process. Everyone who has contributed to those shows over the years has made a difference to the industry’s chances of continuing. The exhibitors who support the show and make it sustainable have played an essential part. But of course exhibitors will only support the show if they believe enough framers will attend and benefit from its existence. And I’m pleased to say the response to this year’s show has been fantastic. So despite the hard times and challenges, there is still a lot of support and belief out there within the industry. And for that, we should all be grateful. Looking forward to seeing you all in Sydney! Frank Filippone

ART AND FRAME 2017

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE FRAMER TODAY? For many people involved in the art and framing trade, daily working life is a juggling act of diverse roles and responsibilities. In reflecting on the wide range of exhibitors and the education program for this year’s show we have attempted to identify four key areas that we think connect with the framer’s role today:

JOIN US IN SYDNEY FOR THE NUMBER ONE ART AND FRAMING INDUSTRY EVENT

Business and Sales - in most cases the framer is operating a business and needs the skills, knowledge and resources to do that successfully. This includes operations and management, as well as sales and marketing. For many framers this also means understanding customer service and retailing, including what kind of products to stock and how they should be displayed and marketed. Designer and Maker - the framer is often in the position of both designer and maker. Whether designing their own products, or working with clients to develop a custom made piece, the framer has to think about design in terms of both appearance and function at every stage. This also requires the technical ability, and understanding of materials and equipment to execute those designs effectively. Conservation - as a custom or bespoke service provider the framer is constantly interacting with cultural artefacts. This unique position requires them to have a knowledge of conservation practices and principles– how to identify and handle objects, how they can be safely housed, and when to get professional advice. Art and Image Reproduction - Framers have a long history of being involved in the retail of prints and artwork for a broader market. Many contemporary framers are also now taking on the role of custom image maker. With the advent of more accessible and affordable large format printing, the framer also has the ability to provide a custom printing and imaging service. The framer can now work with the customer in the design and creation of the printed image along with its framing. On the following pages you can explore a range of educators, suppliers and professionals who will be at the show to assist you to succeed in these roles. PROFILE 7

ONE MORE STEP What if there were impressive ideas that added just one small decorative element? Brian Wolf will be making the trip to Australia for the trade show as a representative of Wizard, who are now being distributed in Australia by Chamton. As well as being a guest demonstrator on the Chamton Stand, he will be presenting a seminar for visitors. The seminar will be free but requires booking. Please email us or visit the Profile stand to register for the seminar which will take place on Sunday at 11 am. Here is Brian’s outline for the seminar: One More Step (Sunday 11 am) So many framers feel that decorative matting designs are impressive and technically marvelous, but seldom useable. What if there were impressive ideas that added just one small decorative element? A framer could still thrill the customer without overwhelming the picture - or spending hours making it. This lecture and slide show will show dozens of everyday design ideas incorporating everything from opening shapes to nameplates. They were made with the Wizard, but the ideas can be adapted to whatever mat cutter a framer uses.

CONSERVATION FOCUS This year’s framing show will have a strong focus on coservation and preservation with a number of exhibitors, seminars, and educators that specialise in the area. Framers are increasingly called on to handle sensitive material and it is important that they know what they should be doing. But as those who have dealt with so many damaged artefacts will tell you, sometimes it is just as important to know what not to do. Perhaps like the medical professional, framers should also take on the maxim: ‘First, do no harm’. Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material The participation of AICCM at this year’s show has been coordinated by Louise Bradley who is a conservation framer specialising in mounting and framing of work on paper, with an interest in period frames and decorated mounts. Louise is the convener of the AICCM Conservation Framers Special Interest Group. She has researched and published in the area including: ‘Reproducing Decorative Mounts’ in Art on Paper: Mounting and Housing, by Archetype Books, and ‘A Fragile Connection: the Artist’s Frame for a Work on Paper’, in On Paper? Preprint of the AICCM 8th Book, Paper and Photographic Materials Symposium. The AICCM’s particiipation will include hosting seminars as well as having a stand where visitors can find out more about Conservation–so come along with any questions you might have. The AICCM will also be hosting the following seminars: Identification of Conservation Issues: Paintings. Friday 11.00 am, (No booking required) How to recognise problems and damage in paintings that require conservation treatment with David Stein of David Stein & Co. Conservation Identification of Conservation Issues: Paper Saturday 11.00 am, (No booking required) How to recognise problems and damage in work on paper that require conservation treatment. 12 PROFILE

Identification of Conservation Issues: Textiles, Sunday 3.00 pm, (No booking required) Why correct mounting techniques and storage are crucial to their survival. Bring an Object Clinic Come along with an object of your choice to the AICCM stand and the conservators will give you advice. Times will be advertised. Don’t forget to bring something along with you to the show to take advantage of this opportunity - it could be an interesting object, or a piece you have had problems knowing how to handle. Reproducing Original Decorative Window Mounts Presented by AICCM, Saturday 1.30-3.30pm This workshop will cover techniques for fabricating historic decorative window mats for framing works on paper. It will include a look at some original decorated mats, a demonstration of a technique for making a paper wrapped window mat, as well as practical session painting French wash lines. These techniques are rarely practiced today, but are particularly useful for replacing original mats that may be damaged, discoloured and acidic, with faithful reproductions using contemporary archival materials.

The Montgolfier brothers invented the first hot-air balloon in 1782. But first and foremost, they were paper manufacturers. Over the centuries, the company created numerous manufacturing processes such as the Hollander beater to tear up rag, pulp dying to obtain uniform coloured paper, etc. They also innovated with vellum paper, then tracing paper in 1809. In 1865, Canson obtained a patent for a photo paper which simplified printing operations. Canson continues to offer products in keeping with consumer expectations: school pack, technical drawing paper, fine art printing paper, papers for digital art printing and photos, etc. Contact: Robert Gatto 0407 070 117 robert@kayell.com.au www.canson-infinity.com

Mastering the Trade Congratulations to Wayne Baker from Framing Elegance in Victoria, who recently passed the Master Certified Picture Framer Exam. Here you can find out more about the framer who is doing his best to stand out from the crowd. Framers often come to the industry from a variety of backgrounds and Wayne Baker is no exception. Since entering the industry in 2009, Wayne has enthusiastically embraced his new profession while drawing on a wealth of experience and knowledge from his previous careers. Before coming into the picture framing industry Wayne travelled extensively and obtained a diverse range of skills. Having worked in the government sector as an aviation engineer and later in research and development, he also has experience as a technical trainer for a large multinational company, then in medium and large businesses in the roles of operations, quality and production management. Wayne also has a Bachelor of Business degree, majoring in Production Management. Wayne entered the industry in 2009 after purchasing a very run down business, he, along with his partner, Chris, set about reinventing the business and their customer’s ideas of what framing should or could be. Wayne has trained extensively, both here and in the USA, and is continually looking for inspiration and ideas which not only look great but which also protect the items presented. Their business, Framing Elegance, operates from the small regional city of Sale, in Gippsland, Victoria and is family owned and operated. Since taking over the business, Framing Elegance has been multi-awarded and has been recognised for not only its picture framing but also for retail, sustainable business practices, regional and microbusiness categories in the country’s premier awards programs. Wayne became a Certified Picture Framer (CPF) in 2011 and in 2017 achieved the prestigious Master Certified Picture Framer qualification (MCPF). 26 PROFILE

Before attempting the MCPF exam a candidate must have been a professional framer for five years, have passed the Certified Picture Framer (CPF) exam and taken a Recertification Course. To achieve the MCPF designation then requires meeting rigorous qualifications, including successful completion of a hands-on custom framing examination administered by PPFA (Professional Picture Framers Association) and demonstrating a thorough knowledge of preservation framing. According to the PPFA there are currently only around 70 Master Certified Picture Framers in the world! Wayne is presenting two seminars at the show. ‘Ideas for Improving Your Bottom Line’ will look at ways to reduce business costs, retain and gain new customers, set yourself apart from your opposition, and ideas for marketing on a budget. Areas covered will include making savings on purchases and essentials, and increasing traffic through your store. His ‘Object Framing & Shadow Boxes’ seminar was originally developed for the PPFA advanced class series and aims to provide an insight into design elements for mounting and framing objects, the creation of shadow boxes and alternate methods for mounting objects which may come into your shop. It is a great benefit to our industry that Wayne is so willing to share his insights with others, and his success shows us that it is possible to achieve our goals with the right strategies and commitment.

framing design

DESIGN THIN KING AS A LONG TIME FRAMING AND DESIGN EDUCATOR, MICHAEL PACITTI HAS PRESENTED MANY SEMINARS AT INTERNATIONAL EVENTS. HERE HE OUTLINES WHY HE BELIEVES DESIGN HAS BECOME SUCH A FOCUS FOR FRAMERS. The industry’s largest international event, the West Coast Art and Frame Expo, takes place each January in Las Vegas. it is also home to The National Conference, the industry’s leading educational program. At the WCAF Show this year a lot of the key design seminars showed a significant increase in attendance. On reflection framers seem to be more aware of the design aspects of framing and looking for education in the field of design. For the last four years’ framers have partaken in more design focused seminars that offer key design principles and elements. It seems that they find this information more suitable to their function as custom framing designers rather than decorators. Design focused educational seminars offer more tangible solutions when selling custom framing because it involves a more interactive process with the customer and utilizes better choices of mouldings, matboards, and or colour combinations.

Design Intervention

Three of my seminars at the WCAF show dealt primarily with design and focused more on how to approach with custom framing designers dealing with their clients. Taking simple Features, Advantages and Benefits and turning into design focused information revealed easily understandable reasons why customers want to do business with a designer rather than a decorator.

Counter Intelligence

The rules of engagement at the retail level in traditional custom framing are now over! A re-branding is now emerging resulting is a seismic shift in how people (customers) are gaining access to information and, as a result, how they are behaving. 28 PROFILE

A new wave of “Counter Intelligence” has become the norm for effective custom framing coupled with client interaction. Daily, custom framing designers are commissioned to take on tasks. They are involved in a strategic approach to effective communication through a visual interface. They are involved in problem solving and creating. Having access to design focused sales information will arm the framer with more visual closing techniques and of course more repeat business. Framers become more confident after completing a design focused seminar whereby they assume more of the role as a custom framing design consultant rather than that of just a custom framer.

Working Tools

My design seminars also introduce visual “Design Mood Boards” that are used as working tools at the custom framing design counter to not only increase the sale of custom framing but also to introduce more elements of design that would entice the customer to bring in more images or objects to be framed. Mood Boards also establish a plan for framers’ to arrange design elements in such a way as to best accomplish a particular purpose of selling custom framing.

Design Thinking – Outside the Box

Outside the box thinking can often lead to creative solutions. When their customers put them in complete charge, their ability to Think Design becomes more prevalent. Design Thinking helps the framer to deliver more tailored services that leans more to the design aspect of custom framing. Design Thinking also shifts their thinking from the standard traditional style of custom framing to the more experiential offerings that consumers expect today. Today’s customer wants to know what their custom picture framing designs will do for them. Find out more: Michael Pacitti has a YouTube channel featuring a number of videos related to frame design.

industry news

The issue of training for picture framers has been a continual topic of discussion in the industry over many years. Now Homesglen TAFE are moving forward with their Picture Framing Apprenticeship program that offers a nationally recognised qualification, as well as on-the-job training. Here Mark Heydon from the Pictue Framers Guild of Australia, outlines the benefits of the program.

APPRENTICESHIP RELAUNCHED AT HOLMESGLEN In an always evolving industry, the need for skilled workers still remains significant. While practices may change, the fundamentals remain true, competency and confidence start with the right training. As a professional stream, picture framing provides opportunities for those holding the necessary qualifications. In an effort to meet these needs of the sector, Holmesglen has invested in its picture framing apprenticeship program. Nationally recognised, the course provides on-the-job training, allowing an employer to experience little inconvenience, while benefitting the apprentice. In a manual industry, hands-on learning becomes essential. Holmesglen has worked with the Picture 30 PROFILE

Framers Guild of Australia to create a practical course, which aims to become nationally delivered. From the use of power tools to operating all workshop machinery, producing manuals, and estimating and costing jobs, the training attempts to offer a well-rounded perspective. Holmesglen welcomes Bryan Langworthy who, with many years of apprenticeship assessing skills, is a great asset to the TAFE and the picture framing industry. Bryan is well known for his excellent communication skills and his deep knowledge of both the training system and picture framing. As a former apprentice, Reuben Rich understands the potential opportunities that obtaining a picture

framing qualification. “There will always be a demand,” he says. Reuben is a past recipient of the International Specialised Skills Fellowship Award. This accolade provided him with the chance to study frame building skills in Italy. Now successfully working in the field, he sees the significance of an apprenticeship pathway. “It’s extremely important to be in the workplace as you’re actually doing your apprenticeship. It’s important to do things together. I think in framing there are so many areas that need to be done [through an apprenticeship],” he explains. Reuben’s advice is also relevant to those considering the option of an apprenticeship. “Approach as many people in the industry as possible, and have discussions and see if you can go into their workplace and see what they’re doing. You gain a lot from actually going into a workplace and seeing how they’re set-up.” Further advice about the MSF31113 Certificate III in Picture Framing (Apprenticeship) can be found via Holmesglen’s Furniture, Joinery and Manufacturing Department, P: 03 9564 2760, E: furnishing@holmesglen.edu.au. An Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) representative can assist with a training contract between an apprentice and employer.

HERITAGE & PRESERVATION what role does the framer play? qualifications to the picture framing industry in Australia.

Profile recently spoke to Quentin Webster about an initiative he is coordinating, The Cultural Heritage Preservation Foundation.

The foundation aims to promote preservation framing qualifications in Australia, within the broader context of Culture and Heritage.

Present classes in preservation framing and offer exam opportunities to those interested in becoming qualified preservation professionals.

The Cultural Heritage Preservation Foundation (CHPF) is a self-funded, non-sponsored, non-aligned, advisory organisation which has the following objectives:

Develop a framework where conservators in private practice and qualified preservation picture framers work more closely together.

Highlight tasks that picture framers should not be attempting - tasks that should be referred to conservators.

Develop strategies which draw society’s attention to the fact that there are qualified preservation professionals available to anyone seeking advice on moveable cultural heritage preservation.

Argue for and articulate the value of moveable cultural heritage in the private sector.

Advocate and profile best practice in preserving moveable cultural heritage in the private sector.

Provide assistance to custodians of moveable cultural heritage who are seeking best practice standards in heritage preservation.

Pitch information at ‘grass roots level’ to develop community awareness of unaccounted heritage in the private sector. Every home is a collections house.

Promote the importance of preservation framing

32 PROFILE

There is no membership structure to the CHPF and therefore no funds are obtained through membership fees. Any funds raised are used only for the promotion of the CHPF Quentin will be at the trade show to discuss the foundation with anyone interested in finding out more.

industry news Quentin Webster representing the PPFA at Art and Frame 2015, one of the many industry events he as volunteered at to support the local chapter.

LOCAL FRAMERS RECOGNISED AT INTERNATIONAL AWARDS Cathy Webster CPF (Certified Picture Framer) this year achieved a significant placing in the Professional Picture Framers Association’s (PPFA) framing competition held at the PPFA 2017 Convention and West Coast Art & Frame Expo, Jan. 22-25, Las Vegas, USA. This prestigious competition is ranked as one of the best in the world and to achieve second place in a field which boasts some of the best framing designers in the world is no mean achievement. Not only is judging based on design but the materials used and the attachments used must meet strict preservation framing requirements. The ‘theme challenge’ for this year’s competition was titled ‘Grandma’s Buttons’ and required contestants to frame seven buttons which had to look like antique buttons from the past. The entrants had to choose the buttons themselves and frame them in a shadow box presentation. Quentin Webster Honoured The international Professional Picture Framers Association also honoured custom picture framer Quentin Webster, MCPF, during the PPFA 2017 Convention in Las Vegas. Each year, the PPFA Awards Committee, in conjunction with the PPFA Board of Directors considers nominees for special awards for association members 34 PROFILE

whose past actions, deeds and vision have greatly strengthened the art and framing industry. Quentin, a Master Certified Picture Framer (MCPF), was honoured as PPFA Chapter Volunteer of the Year, an award that recognizes a Chapter leader and/or member who significantly contributes to their Association. Taken into consideration is involvement in chapter and national activities, creative events, and personal commitment. The Australian chapter of the PPFA have organised a number of successful education and networking events in Australia over the past year and are continuing to support local framers. Congratulations to both Cathy and Quentin!

colour & design

COLOUR SWATCH AND TRANSITIONS FOR ‘GREENERY’, COLOUR OF THE YEAR 2017 Image source: www.pantone.com

COLOUR OF THE YEAR: GREENERY In an age of Instagram and global style trends that travel quickly across the world, Colour and Colour Forecasting have become a major enterprise. An important player in the field of colour, the Pantone Colour Institute, selected “Greenery’ as the colour of the year for 2017 (Pantone 15-0343). Each year since 2000, Pantone has chosen a colour that it sees as reflecting the current cultural and social climate, which then inevitably shapes and influences the broader design world. Over time we see the colours filter down into the design of everyday objects and surroundings, with most people completely unaware of the process or their attraction to new colours. Behind the scenes, these colour predictions or ‘forecasts’ are made up to two years in advance and shape design decisions in industries as diverse as architecture, interiors, fashion, automotive, graphic and industrial design. Last year’s ‘Rose Quartz’ and ‘Serenity’ are an interesting example of how these predictions take shape. For the first time Pantone chose two colours for 2016, a soft pink and baby blue shade that surprised many. However the return of pastel colours, which haven’t really been popular since the Eighties, has now firmly taken hold. Pantone describes Greenery as: ‘A refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings.’ According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, ‘Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political 36 PROFILE

environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalise, Greenery symbolises the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.’ With each forecast Pantone also release ‘colour pairings’ or combinations that work well together. Greenery is seen as a versatile ‘trans-seasonal’ shade that works in diverse combinations, such as with neutrals, brights, deeper shades, pastels, metallics and even the ‘enduring presence of Pantone Colour of the Year 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity’. The awareness of colour and design is increasingly playing an important role in picture framing, not just in frame design itself, but in areas such as retail display, styling, store design, and product selection.
