The mythical gorgon is a favourite legend of the Greek tradition. According to the ancient myth… When Alexander the Great fought and spread Hellenism to east and west, asked the wise men: - “How can I live many years? I want to offer more good things to humanity”. - “There is a way to immortality”, answered the wise men, “but it is difficult”. - “I didn't ask you if it is difficult or not, I want to know what it is”, said Alexander the Great. - “Then, find the water of immortality”, the wise men said to him. - “And where is this water of immortality?” - “Between two mountains which open and close so fast that the most rapid bird cannot get through them. Many famous young princes wanted to get it, but they lost their life to no purpose. If you accomplish to get through the mountains, then you will meet a dragon who never sleeps. If you kill him, you can take it”. When Alexander the Great heard the wise men's words, he commanded that his horse Voukefalas is saddled. This had not wings but it was flying like a bird. He rode his horse and in a few minutes he arrived to the place that the wise men had described. He looked at the two mountains which opened and closed very fast but the king did not lose heart. He passed the mountains untouched; he killed the dragon and took the bottle with the water of immortality. When he came back, he forgot to tell his sister about the content of the bottle. So one day, she took the bottle and slopped it to the garden. The water of immortality came down to an onion
plant and from that day this plant never withers away. When the young princess learnt the bad she had done, she was broken-hearted. - “My God”, she says, “I don't want to believe that one day my brother will die. Let me live with the hope that even if he dies, one day he will come back to the world. And what if difficult years find my country?” Immediately the sister of Alexander the Great turned to a fish beneath the waist and jumped into the sea. She became a Gorgon! Since then she belongs to the sea and if she discerns a ship, she emerges from the sea and asks: - “Ship, ship Alexander the Great continues to live or not?” Alack the captain who says no. The Gorgon makes the sea rough and the ship is sunk. But if the clever captain says: - Yes, he lives my mistress, Alexander the Great. He lives and reigns and the world he is conquering. Then the Gorgon sparkle with vitality, lays her blond hair and the waves calm down. The open sea and the coasts laugh and the seamen enchanted listen, from their ships, the Gorgon sing: - “Yes, Alexander the Great lives. He lives and reigns and the world he is conquering!...”
