SEVEN SHOTS AND HOW TO RECREATE THEM YOURSELF

GET THE SHOT! FEATURING SAL CINCOTTA, DIXIE DIXON, JALEEL KING, STEPHANIE DIANI, MOOSE PETERSON, JP ELARIO AND ANDREA BELLUSO

AT THE GREAT WALL WITH SOME GREAT LIGHTS THE SHOOT

Sal Cincotta knows a great location when he sees one. The first time he visited the Great Wall of China he knew that he would one day return, this time with a camera and a plan. But the trip to the Great Wall of China is far from a romantic journey. Sal describes it as “a boat, plane, train, trolley, cab and lots of walking sort of deal. “It isn’t near anything,” he says. “It’s extremely remote. You have to pack light. You need to understand that you’re not going to be carrying more than about 20 kilos of gear with you.”

THE CHALLENGE

In addition to shooting at what is an extremely remote location for an American wedding photographer, the Chinese sun was also playing peek-a-boo with the clouds as it dipped towards the horizon. Things were further complicated by the fact that there was a constant stream of pedestrian traffic on the wall. “The idea of setting up stands and holding up traffic while you’re busy calling out flash readings is totally out of the question,” laughs Sal.

THE SOLUTION

2

© SAL CINCOTTA

One thing Sal has learned over the years is that he does not need big lights – he needs power. “The B2 Heads are about the same weight and mass as my speedlites, but they output four to five times the light,” he says. Sal’s assistant handheld the B2 Head, equipped with an OCF Softbox 2’ Octa, just out of picture range. Sal triggered the flash using an Air Remote TTL-C. Shooting in TTL Mode, Sal was able to capture the image with perfect exposure even while the subject was walking along the Great Wall and the sun was setting on the horizon.

HIGH-FASHION BRIDAL IN A COTTON MILL THE SHOOT

The term ‘location’ can mean warm, sunny days under clear blue skies or a cold, damp warehouse with no place to plug in the lights. For Dixie Dixon, a recent high-fashion bridal shoot at the McKinney Cotton Mill in Texas took the latter track. Built in 1910 and shuttered in 1969, the structure has seen better days. “The place is huge and there are hardly any outlets,” says Dixie. There wasn’t much in the way of heat either, and the drafty chill of the overcast day could be felt throughout the building.

THE CHALLENGE

Dixie and her team could not do much about the ambient temperature, but they could do something about the ambient light. After assessing the situation Dixie decided to make use of the cooler, diffused ambient window light that filled the room and mix it with the neutral tonality of her flashes. But in order to do this in the old mill, she was going to need a powerful, battery-powered flash. Also, the high-fashion bridal look she was going for required a beautiful light that could be shaped with precision.

THE SOLUTION

4

© DIXIE DIXON

Dixie’s main light was a B1 Off-Camera Flash with an Umbrella Deep White S. A second B1 with a Softlight Reflector White (Beauty Dish) was set up as a rim light. Finally, a bareheaded B1 was set up facing the camera to backlight the strings of small crystals that Dixie suspended in front of her lens to create the random, out-of-focus specula highlights that add a playful dash of mystery to the image. The lights were controlled directly from Dixie’s Nikon camera using an Air Remote TTL-N.

THE B1. WITH TTL. WITHOUT CORDS. Since its release in 2013, the B1 has taken the photographic community by storm. With TTL, without any cords, and with 10 times the power of the average speedlight, the B1 makes great light easy. WITH TTL Point and shoot, and the B1 will automatically adjust its light output to provide you with the perfect exposure. (For Canon and Nikon only.)

“My assistants really love the B1s. They’re easy to travel with and the batteries seem to last forever even when shooting all day long.”

WITHOUT CORDS Shoot indoors or shoot outdoors. Place the lights wherever you want. Your imagination sets the limits, not the length of your cables.

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY EXTRAORDINAIRE THE SHOOT

Jaleel King is a Philadelphia-based portrait and lifestyle photographer. Jaleel, his assistant and a model had decided to head out to Benjamin Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia to capture some street portraits while at the same time utilize some of the characteristic structure and texture of the bridge. The windy, remote spot was also the perfect place to try out Jaleel’s new and portable OCF Light Shaping Tools, tailor-made for on location photography.

THE CHALLENGE

Shooting out in the streets of Philadelphia during wintertime can be cold and windy. What Jaleel and his team did not know was exactly how cold it was going to be. Add to that the strong winter winds sweeping in over the bridge, and it becomes quite clear that carefully preparing each shot was not an option. Jaleel and his team had to move fast. “Having the portability and ease-of-use of the B2 Off-Camera Flash and the OCF Light Shaping Tools really came in handy for getting things set up quickly and efficiently,” says Jaleel.

THE SOLUTION

Jaleel equipped his B2 with the small and lightweight OCF Softbox 2x3’. The soft, diffused light from the softbox blended nicely with the ambient light, while still being strong enough to create some contrast and make the subject pop out a bit from the surroundings. An OCF Softgrid was added in order to prevent the light from spilling onto the bridge too much.

SHOOTING CELEBRITIES IN A FLASH THE SHOOT

It was 2014 and Fox Searchlight Pictures was busy promoting Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s new movie Birdman, starring Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton. Sites and magazines were lining up to put the three stars on their covers. One such site was The Wrap, a printed and online magazine that contacted Stephanie Diani and asked her to shoot their cover. The brief was simple: get an energetic shot that feels as far from a press junket in a hotel room as possible.

THE CHALLENGE

The brief was simple but the circumstances were not, because the shoot was to take place at a press junket in a hotel room! In addition, Stephanie had only 20 minutes with the stars. “Things were further complicated by the fact that there were three subjects with a retinue of 15 to 20 people,” adds Stephanie. “So imagine a hotel room, cleared of furniture, with myself and an assistant, three lights, and all these people. It certainly was cozy.”

THE SOLUTION

8

© STEPHANIE DIANI

Stephanie solved things by turning challenges into opportunities. She asked the three actors to squeeze into a small hallway and imagine they were in a photo booth. “They were clearly comfortable with each other, and started to play right away!” she says. The scene was lit with two D1 Monolights. One was equipped with an umbrella and a diffuser. The other had a Zoom Reflector with a blue color gel on it and was bounced off the white walls in the hallway.

LIGHTING A PLANE UNDER A STORM THE SHOOT

Moose Peterson is an American wildlife and aviation photographer. Moose wants to do more than just take pretty pictures. In other words, Moose wants to shoot real things. This shot, for instance, was all about getting an authentic shot of the World War II fighter aircraft Grumman Wildcat. And Moose got what he asked for. Just like back in the 40s, when the Wildcats had their most historically decisive moment over the South Pacific, a thunderstorm was fast approaching. Moose had to work quickly to get his shot.

THE SOLUTION

The fragile, old aircraft did not like rain very much, so Moose had to be quick on his feet. But the sky got darker by the minute and the amount of available light was constantly decreasing. If Moose had shot with a manually controlled flash, he would have had to constantly adjust its output. But in this case he was shooting with two B1 Off-Camera Flashes, wirelessly synced and controlled from an Air Remote TTL-N set to TTL Mode. “TTL enabled me to really concentrate on the subject and forget about the light!” says Moose.

THE SOLUTION

10

© MOOSE PETERSON

Moose had one B1 equipped with a Softbox RFi 1x4’. “This light was used to light up the pilot and a little bit of the parachute on the ground,” says Moose. The second B1 was equipped with a Magnum Reflector and a 10° Grid and aimed towards the front of the engine. “The Magnum Reflector gives me a good quality light at a distance,” says Moose.

ADDING NEW LIGHT TO A FAMILIAR PATHWAY THE SHOOT

JP Elario is a second-generation wedding and portrait photographer based in Albany, New York. His father started the business back in the 80s, and JP, now 33, started shooting weddings when he was 11. For this shoot, JP headed to a country house in Lenox, Massachusetts to shoot a series of photos of a bride and groom. Being an experienced wedding photographer, JP had taken pictures on the treelined pathway before, though usually earlier in the day when the sun casts a warmer, low-angle wash of light across the scene.

THE CHALLENGE

Being a wedding photographer means that you always have to be prepared for anything. On this particular day, the hour was late, the sun had already dropped behind the treetops and the amount of available light was constantly decreasing. JP knew that he would need a lot of power in order to light up not just the couple but also the beautiful alley in the background.

THE SOLUTION

JP set up a B1 Off-Camera Flash with an Umbrella Deep White L and a diffuser as his main light in front of the couple. Behind them was a B2 Off-Camera Flash with two B2 Heads. One B2 Head was used for backlighting the couple, while the second B2 Head was used to throw a wash of light toward the warm-toned tree branches on the side of the frame. The B1 in combination with the two B2 Heads resulted in a soft and even light. That was it. JP had his shot.

UMBRELLA DEEP & SHALLOW. EIGHTEEN MODELS. TWO SHAPES. INFINITE POSSIBILITIES. Profoto Umbrellas are available in eighteen unique models and two shapes: deep & shallow.

Being outside meant that a batterypowered solution was absolutely essential. Luckily for JP he had his brand new Off-Camera Flash system and a selection of large umbrellas with him.

Umbrella Deep has a deeper, more parabolic shape than the average umbrella. The deeper shape gives the photographer better control of the light spread. It also allows the photographer to focus and shape light by simply sliding the umbrella shaft in its holder.

Umbrella Shallow is remarkably reliable and sturdy for its small size and lightweight. The fabrics have been selected to provide a superior quality of light over years of heavy-duty use, and the metallic elements have been surface treated to prevent rust and discoloration. • • • • • •

BATTLING THE FORCES OF NATURE THE SHOOT

Photographer Andrea Belluso had a special vision for this photo shoot at Långtora Airfield outside of Stockholm. Andrea wanted to create a modern version of the flying ladies of the 1940s. Actually, quite a few of the classic Hollywood stars flew gliders. The particular glider he borrowed for this shoot was used by the Danish Air Force during the 1940s to train fighter pilots. Some people at the flying club claim that the glider was once flown by Greta Garbo – but that fact is still to be verified.

THE CHALLENGE

There are days when the forces of nature seem to conspire against you. Andrea’s shoot at Långtora belongs in that category. Andrea had planned to shoot with only sunlight and Collapsible Reflectors, so he and his team unfolded their reflectors and got ready to shoot. Then came the clouds and they had to unpack their Pro-B4 flashes to create their own sunlight. And once again, Mother Nature played a trick on them and the sun returned. The whole day was like that – sunny, cloudy, sunny, cloudy…

14

© ANDREA BELLUSO

THE SOLUTION

Andrea and his team had to stay on their toes and act fast. When there was sun, they used a Collapsible Reflector. When the clouds appeared, they used a Pro-B4 to create sunlight. This particular image was created using only sunlight and a Collapsible Reflector Sunsilver/White. The sunsilver-sided reflector gave Andrea exactly the look he was going for, combining the crispness of a silver-sided reflector with the warmth of a gold-sided reflector. In the end, battling the forces of nature was not so bad after all.

Profoto was founded by Eckhard Heine and Conny Dufgran. Eckhard is sadly no longer with us, but Conny is still a driving force behind the company. Here he is, shot by world-famous photographer Annie Leibovitz for our 40th anniversary.

Profoto was born almost 50 years ago in Stockholm, Sweden, when two passionate photographers decided to build the best flash system ever made. Today, our products are used by the best in the industry. Whether it is on a billboard or in a fashion magazine, there is a good chance that the image you are looking at was created with the help of our tools.

GET THE SKILLS. GET THE TOOLS. GET THE SHOT! You need two things to realize the image you have pictured in your mind: the skills and the tools.

This brochure will provide you with both. Flick through the pages and seven professional photographers will tell you about how these seven striking images were created. The Light Shaping Tools that these photographers used are compatible with most major flash brands, and the tricks that are revealed can be applied to any kind of photography.
