TO OUR PLAIYKOWIYERS OF DISCOI/ERY
Dr. Fred L. Dunn, Jr.
t'. of Maryland,8.A., M.A., F ranklin
Ll.
Ed.D.
Marshall College,
ol Pennsylvania
Principal
you were Six years ago our school began and you were in the seventh grade. when a few of Parent-Teacher of our committee provided a Arctic of the your grade, stirdy in the sixth Association with the suggestion that our school be named Robert E. Peary High School' Before you entered your school, you provided the basis for your traditions. As seventh graders, you were enthusiastic, excited, and eager; you possessed what appeared to be limitless energy. After six yeals you are still enthusiastic, excited, and eager, but you now know that your energy has limits. This knowledge has led you to develop a process for careful planning; in this way you are able to obtain the maximum within these limits, and at the same time it is through careful planning that each learns that the extent of his limits are greater than he first believed. Such knowledge is not a coincidence but instead a realization that pianning is the major ingredient for the continual act of discovery' You recall that, at the end of our first year, each student, faculty, and staff member and a number of patrons received a "Plankowner's Certificate" in recognition of the contribution ,,. establishment of ideals and traditions which will serve as a each had made to the precedent for all Peary students ." For six years you have been' the main component in our school's development. Because you have been so vital to our development you have consequently charted our future. The class of '66 has developed into a class which is "quiet," efficient, and purposeful; it has always possessed a sincerity of purpose and a quest for understanding. At times, I have felt a stillness come over the Class of '66 and a certain restlessness of its members. It is as though you have looked into the future, and with resoluteness you replied, "I will seek the truth and with this truth, 'I will find a way or make one.' " As I described your class, so I have described our school; for indeed, six years in a developing institution entitles you to be described as Robert E. Peary High School, the "School's Class." You are the sum-total of our efforts; you have charted our future and while our school will become more sophisticated in programs and methods, our future is dependent upon your past. You have provided us with a most difficult course, for the most important task of the Discoverer is to communicate to all others his discovery and its meaning' In discovering the magnitude of "quiet," you have provided us with the knowledge that the potential for action is always present in an efficient and purposeful body, and that your sincerity and the quest for understanding are the forces which direct the action toward noble endeavors. In our form of government, it is very important for each of us to be willing to see, at least, both sides of controversial issues. In this way, each of us is able to determine our relationship with each other and the mainstream of our culture, and at the same instant we are also able to determine our individuality. As we learn to appreciate differences we are also able to reduce the frustration which this knowledge produces. A difficult concept in democracy is that while the individrial is of paramount importance and influences our culture when he stands alone, the magnitude of his individuality depends upon the mutual appreciation and interrelatedness of the individual and his culture. Democracy requires a faith and trust one to another and exists upon this basic premise. When one individual causes distrust or denies faith, a cornerstone is dislodged and threatens the stability of the institution. Your class, with its quiet, efficient, and purposeful manner, possessing a sincerity of purpose and a quest for understanding has infused a positive force upon our traditions and this positive force has transcended our own physical limitations. Mankind may discuss, invent, and develop "things" to make his future easier and happier, but his real quest must be in discussing, inventing, and developing faith in one another which can only come from constant searching in the aura of interpersonal relationships. There is no process more complex than that of learning; there is no greater solution to be found than that of how to develop human relationships that enable the individual to experience the reality of each situation and to act in a manner consistent with his goals. Robert E. Peary High School is dedicated to a man whose successes resulted not only from his intellect, careful planning, and persistence, but equally important from his willingness to examine the "whys" of his failures. Our continued emulation of these characteristics produces that irrespressible restlessness which enhances our unique Student Body and Faculty. On behalf of the Faculty and Staff, I thank you, the Class of 1966. our Plankowners of Discovery, the "school's Class," for what you have done for our school and express to you best wishes
for the future'

SEI{IOR CLASS OFFICERS
Mary Jo Cannon, sec.; Dennis Hergert, pres.; Sue Walling, v. pres.; John Carpenter, treas
As in years past, the Class of 1966 wished to uphold the many Senior traditions of the school as well as adding some of its own. The many activities sponsored by the class during the year were highlighted by dances of all shapes and sizes. The Opener Dance established the Seniors as pacemakers and created a popular form of entertainment used frequently during the year. Thc Homecoming and Senior Prom were thc more formal activities carried on by the class. The Senior year ended with line graduation exercises. By thc determined efforts of many hardworking Seniors, all thc year's activities were great sllccesses. Thc Senior Class. who are the last plankowners to graduate, wish to thank everyone who over the years has helped us to achicve our individual and collective goals. A special thanks goes to our sponsors, Mrs. Glass and \{r. \{oore. and homeroom teachers.

twenty-five candidates for the varsity and junior varsity reported. There were only
three lettermen returning from the 1964 team. When the season opened on September 13th against Northwood, 35 boys had been selected for the varsity and 30 boys for the junior varsity teams. The
varsity played 9 games winning 3 and losing 6, and the Junior Varsity played 8 games winning 3 and losing 5. Both squads were lacking in experience; however, an abundance of desire on the part of the players and coaches resulted in a constant improvement in both squads and was finalized by a victory for both the varsity and junior varsity over Walt Whitman. The varsity had to come from behind to win 74-73. Trailing at the half 13-0, the Huskies scored twice in the fourth quarter and made both conversions to end the season with a story book flnish.

VARSITY U/RESTLING Frederick straining for the fall.
,ff4 During the 65-66 season, the Huskies, coached by Ed Burlas and Gene MacKay, showed that wrestling has become an established tradition at Peary. Spearheaded by seniors Gary Jackson, Doug Zierdt, Bob Neil, Bruce Werts, Bruce Judge, Don Goglio, Kenny Pearl, and Rick Frederick, the team compiled the greatest number of individual and team points in its history. The team record was 2-7-l; defeating Richard Montgomery and Sherwood and drawing with Walt Whitman. In the Montgomery County lnvitational Tournament, Peary finished seventh. Outstanding performances were
in by Bruce Werts, who flnished second; Gary Ford, who flnished second; turned
and Rick Frederick, who finished third. Competing in the Tri-county Tournament,
Werts finished third and Ford finished fourth. A fine group of juniors and sophomores filled out the varsity team and comprised a junior varsity team that the school can well be proud of.

The American Field Service committee at Peary, sponsored by Miss Thomas,
is part of a large national organization that brings foreign students over to the U.S. within each school. AFS's main function is to make all arrangements, financial and otherwise, for the student. To accomplish the financial aspect the AFS raises funds through its regular annual activities: the AFS drive, the Hootenanny,
a booth at the student fair, and a dinner featuring the native foods of the student's country.

The Lab Squad assists the science teachers in the preparation and execution of laboratory exercises, many of which would otherwise be impossible in the sci-
ence curriculum. Among the group's other activities are the maintenance of order in the stockrooms, the construction of demonstration apparatus for the classroom, and the inventory of equipment' Perhaps the most important function is the atmosphere of incentive provided for members. While working in the lab, invaluable experience
is
obtained
in
the
training received. Besides gaining
a
richer experience in science, members are also encouraged to carry out individual research and experimentation, often leading to new interests, science fair entries, and future careers. Mr. MacKay is the Left to Rigltt:

Drama presenting of tradition its continued Club a play to the entire student body' From the opening scene until the inevitable, fi.nal downfall of the hero, the Drama
For the second Year the PearY
Club's Oetlipus Rex was performed in superb dramatic style. Directed and narraied by Mr. Vincent G. Gibbs, the effort resulted in outstanding performances from the players' An effort of this nature' however, in order to be successful, requires the aid of many other loyal worke15-6f1sn laboring into the small hours of the morning. Thanks go out to those responsible for costumes, make-up, set deslgn and construction, technical effects, and publicity. The efficient performance
of their tasks resulted in a smooth, totally moving presentation. Oedipus was performeJ twice, once in the evening for interested members of the community and once in assembly for the students' We shall all have a special place for Oedipus in our hearts, especially the touching scene where Oedipus advises his daughters and the tragic death of Jocasta'
