Robert E. Peary High School is located in the city of Rockville, Maryland, approximately fifteen miles north of the Nation's Capital, and is part of the expanding Montgomery County school system. There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things' We are guided in our pursuit of excellence by a committed and competent administration, faculty, and staff As a student body of over 1800 students we .
are seeking to
establish effective human living as they apply for democratic relationships in the cornmunity, school, in the in the family, to inherit' We about we are and in the world and the responsibilities participate in and accept appreciation
of the
privileges inherent
in
the
American way of life. The future is a world unlimited by ourselves; in it we discover not only what concerns us, but sometimes by chance, what interests those whom we love. It is our hope that the future generations who will come to Robert E. Peary High School will continue to achieve, will continue to have pride in the perpetuation of the traditions that are so much a part of life here at PearY'

Somehow, I am necessary for God's purpose; 4s On March 27, 28, and 29, the Robert E. Peary Drama Club presented Archibald MacLeish's "J.8." to the school and community. lt was directed by Mr. Vincent G. Gibbs, who also played a leading role in the play. J.B. portrays the story of a perfect and upright man who is made to suffer at the hand of his God. The opening circus scene was not in the original script of the play. lt was created by the players themselves.
Fine performances by members
of the cast and
crew made J.B. a big success,
Ringmaster, Marc Gottlieb, announces the circus scene
Clown, Alan Dudley, entertains the audience.
Two messengers relate to J.B. and Sarah the tragic death of their eldest son'

we can have just what we like if we like what The English department endeavors to teach students to write effectively and to understand the structure of the English language' The department provides the student with a knowledge of major literary works and provides him wiih standaids for the intelligent evaluation of life through literature. The literature courses are designed to stimulate the student's appreciation of the great ideas of man, present and past'
Three elective courses are available to students who desire a deeper study in certain phases of English. There are two levels of dramatic study, pubti" speaking and journalism open for those who wish to further their studies in English' A very important job of the English department is to encourage organization and logic in thought. Other functions include the publication of the Midnight Sun and the Polaris.

Socce r Led by Captains John Ellinger (Senior) and Bill Bedenbaugh (Junior), Peary's Varsity Soccer Team compiled a 3-4-3 record in a very tough and much improved Montgomery County AA Soccer League. Starting the season with high hopes, the Huskies were early hampered by injuries and erratic playing although their desire never lagged and the:r team spirit remained high. The standout game of the season occurred when the team beat league-leading and undefeated, untied Montgomery Blair by a score of 2-0. The tremendous playing of the team as a whole and particularly by Fullback George Lantzas and Halfbacks Al Luckenbach and Dave Daughters, who scored the goals, enabled the Huskies to pull off this upset. The defensive lineup of the team was a particularly bright spot as they allowed Peary's opponents to score only

Coach Frank Moore coached his charges to several very exciting victories. Almost all of the Huskies victories were close contest in which the outcome was often doubtful
The two captains, Steve Houston and Clyde Colmes, were the inspirational leaders throughout the season for the Huskies. Guy Baratte played key roles in several games and had the best free throw percentage on the team. Gary Steinfort was instrumental in winning several games including the B.C.C. which he won with a tap in at the final buzzer.

The Girl's Sports Association, sponsored by Miss June Bladen, is an incorporated group of girls with a basic interest in sports. To be eligible for G.S.A., girls must earn a certain number of points by participating in the sports of their choice. G.S.A. offers such sports as hockey, basketball, volleyball, badminton, softball,
gym-
nastics, and modern dance. G.S.A. has intramurals and sportsday teams as well as honor teams. The sports are offered to promote sportsmanship through fair play as well as providing activity and enjoyment. lntramural sports are open to anyone who is interested in playing occasionally. From these teams certain girls are chosen to play against other schools in sportsdays. Honor teams consist of girls specially chosen to represent our school in competition with other schools. These teams provide an opportunity for more talented girls to increase their skills and to play with other Eirls of equal ability and interest.

During half time, Miss Bladen, coach of all honor teams, gives instructions to the Hockey honor team.

And we begin to fear because it is getting much closer and it is coming our way. Finally, almost by accident, we seem to find a piece that completes our puzzle. Maybe it is a friend whom we trust or an idea that fills us with inspiration or the many good times we shared with someone special. Nevertheless, we are thankful that we were sheltered since we weren't quite ready to leave. We begin to have misgivings about leaving. We seriously consider not going, not stepping out into the stream of things. lnstead, we think of just messing around and not doing too much. Yet, something happens. Maybe it is spring when we miss so much school and have such a good time just being alive. Or maybe it is the end of the year when we all laugh and joke a lot. lt might be the times we couldn't study or read. We just sit around and talk a lot; or walk around and think about things. At any rate, we lose our misgivings and find sheer joy in this life of ours. 226

For a few fleeting moments we wonder when. But it is today, this very moment, now. We stand up and look
around us and see that it is our bag now and we know that we cannot stall any longer. So we fill our lungs with seasoned life and step out of the door, for win or lose now, u/e must choose.
