WASHING AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS – FOR LASTING FUNCTION AND DURABILITY

The correct wash cycle, care and storage of your workwear is important for its durability, function and long term comfort. The right care is also conditional in order to guarantee specific functions in the garment. An example is that a Hi-Vis garment may be less effective and therefore, less safe if it remains dirty. Please note the following care and washing instructions.

WASH

INDUSTRIAL WASH

Every product has specific washing instructions, which are important to follow. They are suited to the particular garment's material and design. Where the washing instructions say "wash separately", this should be done. Alternatively, the garment can be washed with similar colours. Blåkläder estimates that woven materials will shrink up to 3% and knitted material/jerseys up to 5%. Avoid shrinkage by ironing your clothes after washing them. Certain clothes may need to be shaped somewhat to retain their form. It is also important that zips, buttons and Velcro closures are closed when the garment is washed. This reduces wear and tear and lengthens the garment's life.

Industrial wash involves a large scale, professional laundry environment, in contrast to home laundry. Garments labelled “industrial wash” are suitable for this type of laundry. The ISO 15797 certification deals with industrial washing & drying, temperature, detergents and reactive substances which may be used. We recommend a trial wash at the intended laundry.

PRE-WASH The garments do not normally need pre-washing. In case of heavy soiling, pre-wash can be used, with the same quantity of detergent as used in the main wash. Do not soak the wash in advance as undissolved detergent can damage the garments.

DETERGENT Use laundry detergent for coloured garments. Do not use laundry detergent containing bleach. Check that the laundry detergent is intended for the garment's wash temperature. Follow the washing instructions on the laundry detergent pack. Please be aware that fabric softeners can damage certain fabrics and their functions. For example, the breathability of water-repellent membranes can be impaired. We do not recommend the use of fabric softeners.

DRYING We do not recommend tumble drying as an everyday solution. It is best to shake & smooth out the fabric, hang up or dry flat. If you do choose to tumble dry, follow the label temperature guide (1 or 2 ‘dots’ on the icon) and do not allow the garment to dry completely as the greatest wear and shrinkage risk occurs at the latter stage of drying. Check the garment label carefully as there may be exceptions.

HIGH-VISIBILITY GARMENTS Soiling impairs the visibility of the Hi-Vis garment. For this reason, it is important to wash them frequently and to follow the washing instructions. Never wash Hi-Vis garments with laundry detergent containing bleach, because this impairs the garment's luminance. Hi-Vis clothing can be stored in a dry, well-ventilated space. Where garments need repairing, this must be done using fabric and thread that meets the garment's standard.

SHOES In order to fulfil the safety stated characteristics, it is important that the shoes are always used and tied correctly. Also pay attention if the shoes are subject to heavy wear – check that the soles, seams and uppers are intact. Clean the shoes regularly with a brush, remove any spots with a damp cloth and use shoe cream on the leather uppers. Never clean shoes with substances such as petrol, acids or solvents. The shoes should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated space. Never dry shoes next to a heat source such as a stove, radiator or drying cabinet. Let them dry slowly and well-ventilated at room temperature.

GLOVES All gloves have a marking showing the correct certification and performance level. A damaged or badly fitting glove provides poorer protection, so you should always check the gloves before use. The gloves must not come into contact with fire. Take care when working with moving machine parts, because the gloves may get caught and cause damage to your hands. Store dry and cool. Please consult your gloves' marking for the correct washing instructions, or clean with a dry brush.

TOUGH TESTING

-----------------------------------------------------------Destroying clothing is a great way to develop it! Our lab tests wear and tear, rip and pull resistance, colour fastness and shrinkage. We regularly check our materials at independent test institutes.

MATERIALS

-----------------------------------------------------------Different professions have different requirements for the fabric in their garments. We work with fabric producers worldwide to create materials that meet these tough demands.

LIFETIME WARRANTY

-----------------------------------------------------------Blåkläder is the only working clothes manufacturer that offers a lifetime warranty on its seams. Professional staff and modern equipment make this warranty possible. If a seam splits, as long as it has not been torn by sharp edges or tools, we will repair it or replace the garment. We consider a garment’s life span to be up until it has holes worn in it or is otherwise no longer useful.

BETTER COTTON INITIATIVE

-----------------------------------------------------------Since 2017, the cotton used in Blåkläder’s clothes is sourced completely or partly from the Better Cotton Initiative; a programme that is helping to promote more sustainable cotton production and generate higher revenues for the farmers. DURABILITY

Different professions have different requirements for the fabric in their garments. To make our garments durable and long lasting, we work in partnership with fabric producers worldwide and purchase fabrics, threads and zips from the world’s foremost suppliers. This enables us to manufacture products that meet the highest expectations.

DISTRIBUTION

We are constantly training the people who sell our products to ensure a high level of service throughout the distribution chain.

OUR FACTORIES

------------------------------------------------------Through our factories, we have full oversight of the production process and therefore also have better control of the quality. Some 4.5 million garments leave our factories each year.

SA 8000

------------------------------------------------------Our factories are SA8000 certified, which is a voluntary international standard that governs the social conditions of employees. SA8000 is based on ILO’s core conventions, UN’s declaration of Human Rights and UN’s convention on the Rights of the Child. This means that our factories are audited according to eight key areas: child labour, forced labour, health and safety, freedom of association and freedom of negotiation, discrimination, discipline and working hours and reimbursement.

STORES

------------------------------------------------------Blåkläder works hard to ensure the customer gets their order in full and on time. Thats why our warehouse covers 40,000m2 and holds approximately 3 million garments. Its from this central hub we send garments worldwide.

THE PPE DIRECTIVES STANDARDS Personal protective equipment is designed to protect the wearer against risks to their health and/or safety. Only PPE products that comply with the EU’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Regulation may be placed on the market within the European Member States (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA). From 21 April 2018 until 20 April 2019, the previous PPE Directive 89/686 applies in parallel with the new PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425. As from 21 April 2019, the PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 will come into full effect. Under the PPE Regulation, it is the responsibility of the manufacturer to ensure that the product placed on the market complies with the requirements of the Regulation. The Regulation is interpreted in standards that specify the actual requirements that apply to each specific type of personal protective equipment. The requirements cover protective performance, safe use, marking and technical documentation.

Personal protective equipment is divided into three categories: Category I – PPE that provides protection from minimal risks. E.g. on products from Blåkläder: rainwear. Category II – PPE that cannot be categorised in either Category I or III. E.g. on products from Blåkläder: hi-vis garments, safety footwear, protective gloves, knee pads, blade cut resistance garments. Category III – Protective equipment of complex design that protects the wearer against dangers to life or serious permanent injury, where the user cannot detect the risk in time. E.g. on products from Blåkläder: garments that protect against thermal risks due to electric arcs. Personal protective equipment in categories II and III must be certified by a notified body, i.e. an independent test facility that is authorised to issue type-examination certificates for PPE products.

The trousers are made in a strong material and are fitted with stretch panels in the back yoke, on the front pockets and at the back of the knee, which makes these trousers a flexible and supple choice for those who spend a lot of time working on their knees, e.g. floor and tile layers. 1554 has a number of strategically placed functional pockets, such as a knife pocket in Kevlar®-reinforced material, flaps and stretch panels as well as an easy-access flex phone pocket in a stretchy material that is suitable for most mobile phones.

EN ISO 11611 Protective clothing certified according to EN ISO 11611 provides the wearer with protection against small splashes of molten metal as well as transitory contact with flame. The garments certified according to this standard are suitable for users who weld or work with similar work. The garments are classified based on their protective capacity against different levels of welding techniques which cause more or less spray and thermal radiation.

Garments certified in accordance with the IEC 61482-2 standard provide a designated level of protection against the thermal hazards of an electric arc. The protective properties are designed to prevent the onset of second-degree burns. Other hazards of an electric arc, which the standard does not include, are molten metal splashes, pressure waves, electric shocks and hazardous gases created when a fabric is vaporised

Class 1 - Protection against less dangerous welding techniques and situations, which cause less spray and lower thermal radiation. Class 2 - Protects against more risky welding techniques and situations, which cause higher levels of spray and thermal radiation. (A1) Limited flame spread, surface ignition method. EN ISO 11612 Protective clothing certified according to EN ISO 11612 provides the wearer with protection against transitory contact with heat and flame. The heat can be convection heat, thermal radiation, metal splash or a combination of these. The garments are classified based on the following parameters: (A1) Limited flame spread, surface ignition method. (A2) Limited flame spread, edge ignition method. (B) Convection heat, scale 1-3 where 3 is best. (C) Thermal radiation, scale 1-4 where 4 is best. (D) Molten aluminium splash, scale 1-3 where 3 is best. (E) Molten iron splash, scale 1-3 where 3 is best. (F) Contact heat, scale 1-3 where 3 is best.

EN ISO 14116 Protective clothing complying with this International Standard is intended to protect the user against occasional and brief contact with small igniting flames, in circumstances where there is no significant heat hazard and without the presence of another type of heat. When protection against heat hazards is necessary, ISO 11612 is recommended. Protective clothing according to EN ISO 14116 may consist of several separate garments, or a single garment with one or more layers. All assemblies claiming compliance with this standard shall achieve a limited flame spread index of 1, 2 or 3 when tested in accordance with ISO 15025. EN 1149-5 Protective clothing that is certified to EN 1149-5 must be used as part of an earthed system to avoid electrostatic discharges in explosive atmospheres.

A new pictogram for protective clothing that meets the requirements of IEC 61482-2 will be introduced in 2019.

Open arc test: in this test, fabrics and garments are exposed to an open electric arc. Each fabric or combination of fabrics is given a value expressed as cal/cm² (calorific value). This value is the maximum incident thermal energy to which a fabric can be exposed and still provide protection against seconddegree burn injury; Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV), or when holes form in the fabric; Energy Break-Open Threshold (EBT). Both ATPV and EBT are calculated with a 50% probability of protection. In 2019, an ELIM value will be added to complement ATPV and EBT. This will specify the upper limit of incident energy to which a garment can be exposed without any risk of second-degree burn injury or the formation of holes in the fabric. The higher the calorific value of the fabric or garment, the greater the protection for the wearer. These tests can also be carried out on combinations of fabrics/garments and thereby improve thermal protective performance.

EN 61482-1-2 EN 61482-1-2 Box test: in this test, fabrics and garments are exposed to an electric arc confined in a box at a specific value. The arc current is 400 V and the duration is 500 ms. There are two classes for the test. The test gives a pass or fail result. Combinations of different garments or lined garments are often required to pass the box test Class 2.

EN ISO 13034 Protective clothing that is certified to EN ISO 13034 is not designed to provide full protection to the wearer when regularly handling chemicals. It is only suitable for use where there is a risk of exposure to weak chemical substances in spray form or accidental low-volume splashes. The clothing provides enough protection to allow the wearer time to remove the clothing before any chemicals on the garment penetrate the fabric.

Available in two variants: TYPE 6 protective clothing tested as a full one-piece suit TYPE PB [6] not tested as a full one-piece suit. Any garment certified as PB [6] must be used in combination with other garments for full body protection and with other personal protective equipment.
