Ebb and Flow is a collection of artworks made by a group of artists from Project Ability’s ReConnect studio and exhibited in Project Ability Gallery. Working with ReConnect tutor Celine Mcilmunn the group began the project with several visits to the newly opened Claypits Nature Reserve on the banks of Glasgow’s Forth and Clyde Canal during autumn 2021. Drawings and photographs were made on these visits and these were then taken into the studios and used as a foundation for creating artworks about what had been seen and imagined. Spending time in the studios during the winter, the group worked individually and collaboratively with an array of mediums to create a varied and harmonious exhibition.
‘I liked exploring the new nature reserve and seeing areas I’d never been to before. The view over Glasgow from the top of the nature reserve was great! ‘ Ruth
‘I enjoyed the social aspect of seeing and working with people again after the pandemic. I liked seeing the wildlife on the canal.’ Morag
‘We all took a lot of photographs and searched for plants and flowers for photographic work... We placed the plants on photographic paper and covered with a sheet of glass and left out in the sun for a couple of hours.’ Sian
‘I enjoyed meeting up for the walks, looking closely at the nature and finding out about the history of the claypits.’ Richard
‘I liked exploring the new nature reserve and seeing areas I’d never been to before. I also liked seeing the moorhens, swans and all the purple flowers.’ Ruth
‘This has been such a very enjoyable project. Being outdoors in nature after spending so much time indoors because of covid has been lovely and very refreshing. For some of the group it was their first taste of being back in the studios and having the opportunity to work with materials and equipment they didn’t have access to for quite some time. ’ Celine
‘We made a map of Scotland, using techniques I hadn’t tried before, with the help of others. It took quite a bit of planning and execution. I not only learned more about the coastlines and waterways of Scotland, but techniques for working with clay.’ Gillian
