In The Right Light, At The Right Time, Everything is Extraordinary.
CLOSE DIALOGUE WITH THE DESIGN TEAM
CLOSE DIALOGUE WITH THE DESIGN TEAM Since its founding, PLD has had the opportunity to collaborate with many well established design firms, to successful results. We know from experience that in order for lighting design to be successful, one of the key factors is the ability to interpret the design brief and to provide creative input while staying true to the design vision. Therefore we strive to establish good rapport and communication with the design team members.
Fairmont Hotel Seoul
CLOSE DIALOGUE WITH THE DESIGN TEAM PLD will receive briefings from the client, hotel operator, interior and landscape designers to understand the interior design concepts as well as the requirements and concerns. Lighting concepts and ideas will serve to enhance and amplify the design intent and these will be communicated early on in the design process, through the use of mood imagery and/or sketches. During the final concept presentation, the lighting mood will be conveyed through perspectives rendered with lighting effects.
Mandarin Oriental (MO) Bar Singapore The Bar Awards Singapore 2019 - Hotel Bar Of The Year – No. 2
CLOSE DIALOGUE WITH THE DESIGN TEAM We will consider the architectural character and style of the spaces, the spatial volume, circulation flow, and target experience from the onset. At this stage it is important that we have a good grasp of the designer’s visions and provide creative solutions that bring these visions to life. After work sessions with the designers, the lighting solution will be laid out and this will be illustrated in the form of glow plans. From the glow plan we can see how the lighting is distributed, and how the various lighting elements and nuances come together. The mood set by lighting will be considered carefully, taking the guest on a lighting journey – the first impression upon arrival, different dining moods in various F&B outlets at different times of the day, social media opportunities, visual comfort and relaxed atmosphere in the guestrooms, etc. Lighting considerations will be given to highlight features and enhance spatial volumes.

CLOSE DIALOGUE WITH THE DESIGN TEAM Whenever necessary, we will initiate ideas for lighting details at an early stage, such that these details can be dovetailed into the design. Lighting options may be put on the table for discussion, such that issues can be identified and weighed. In this way optimum lighting solutions can be agreed.

LUXURY HOTEL PROJECT EXPERIENCE
LUXURY HOTEL PROJECT EXPERIENCE PLD has rich and diverse experience working with international designers on hospitality projects in different regions. We are highly accustomed to providing tailored lighting designs that respond to the specific style and branding of each project.
PROJECT SHOWCASE – BULGARI HOTEL SHANGHAI This 48 storey riverside hotel development by the Suhe Creek encompasses the historic Chamber of Commerce building, gazetted as one of Shanghai’s finest heritage buildings. The rich historical fabric serves as a counterpoint to the understated and elegant interior design helmed by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel. The Bulgari brand is synonymous with the effortless comfort and purity of Italian style. In our lighting design we sought to complement this aesthetic, with the use of highly sophisticated contemporary lights that were discreet but yet unique. The overall lighting mood is rich, warm and low key, providing an atmosphere that is residential and sensuous at the same time.

PROJECT SHOWCASE – SIGNIEL SEOUL This six star hotel is located in the tallest building in Seoul. Addressing high volumes is a key challenge in the lighting design. The hotel features doubleheight ceilings that convey a sense of airiness. It was an important consideration for us to use fixtures that deliver brightness but are yet ‘quiet’ and subdued at the same time. The hotel has been carefully designed and curated to create a mood of luxury and tranquillity. Subtle floral motifs and patterns were inspired by Korean embroidery and ceramics. The lighting design helps to enhance this soft, relaxed atmosphere. Luxurious materials, art and feature lighting make spectacular visual statements. In contrast, architectural lighting is provided by subtler devices, such as linear LED downlights and long snoot spotlights, which prove particularly effective in lofty environments.

PROJECT SHOWCASE – JW MARRIOTT QUFU Situated in the centre of Qufu in China’s Shandong Province is the World Heritage site known as Confucius temple. The JW Marriott Hotel pays homage to China’s most famous philosopher. PLD collaborated with LTW Designworks on this hotel with rich historical background. A series of adjoined low level buildings arranged in traditional Chinese courtyards includes a Lobby, Lobby Lounge, Tea Library, Chinese Restaurant and a Spa. Carefully curated architectural and decorative lighting solutions convey a subtle sense of sanctuary, in interiors that bring to mind an elegant manor of the ancient scholar. Textures and silhouettes are delicately expressed with dramatic accent to sculptures and features. Architectural downlights are minimal and tailored within the plaster and timber patterned ceilings. A key strategy involved incorporating functional accent light sources within the decorative luminaires. This minimized the need for architectural luminaires but enabled the designers to provide accent to buffet counters, display tables and the like. The luminaires are elegant and contemporary but have distinct references to traditional forms and materials.

PROJECT SHOWCASE – MANDARIN ORIENTAL TAIPEI This is an iconic hotel located in the heart of Taipei, with its interiors designed for romantic and decadent luxury. Sumptuous fabrics and intricate detailing evoke the stately sophistication of the chateau style, while the fresh colour palette and clean finishing gives a modern feel. Elaborate and intricate screens and motifs are a recurring theme in the interior design, along with stunning feature lights and art pieces. These art pieces included works from renowned artists, stunning antiques, and sculpture designed by the award-winning artists, such as Lee Jae-Hyo, Kim Chan, and Zhu Wei, the world’s most renowned contemporary Chinese ink painter. The lighting design was carefully tailored so as not to disrupt the elaborate interior design elements, and we sought to bring out beautiful textures, colours and materials.

PROJECT SHOWCASE – ROSEWOOD SANYA Located on Hainan Island, the resort has been designed by AB Concept, and is inspired by the tranquility of the South China Sea. Encompassing a private residence-style, the hotel’s guestrooms and suites are accented with soft neutrals, and feature balconies with sea views. In keeping with the nature-inspired design philosophy, the resort includes tribal totems, wood accents, and colour palettes of grey and blue. Complete with plush seating and shelves displaying curated books and artwork, the hotel lobby extends into a lounge area and tea bar. Artworks act as a focal point in the space, with pieces including a 7m high abstract canvas painting by Argentine-based artist Carlos Arnaiz; a large pink bear piece by Byun Dae-Young; and Mahogany Whale Tail by West Virginia’s Thomas Givens, which celebrates wildlife native to the local surroundings. The lighting solution is understated and carefully tailored to respond to the relaxed style of the resort. Discreet and glare free fixtures of high colour rendering were selected to enhance the visual comfort of the guests and to bring out beautiful textures and colours of artwork and interior accents.

LIGHTING THAT REVEALS SPACES AND MATERIALS The appropriate lighting colour temperature will be carefully considered, as different colour temperatures create different nuances in the lighting mood and can alter the colour appearance of a space. Circadian lighting - lighting colour temperatures that respond to the human biological rhythms - generates a lot of interest as hotels nowadays are also concerned about wellness.

LIGHTING CONTROL
LIGHTING CONTROL Lighting control systems for guestrooms and public areas will be specified based on current and reliable technology, to meet the hotel operational needs. Guestrooms – We will be looking at designing room control logic that is intuitive and convenient to use, and caters to various needs of the guest (relaxation, work, leisure, grooming etc).
LIGHTING CONTROL Public Areas – Preset lighting scenes running on astronomical time control will morph throughout the day, to counterbalance transitions in daylight and to create different moods. Our team will typically spend around a week to direct the lighting focusing and programming of lighting scenes.
