Project Arts Centre Season Brochure 2017/18
Dangerously Enticing
Artistic Director’s Welcome. Welcome to Project Arts Centre’s 2017/18 season. I am delighted to bring you this packed programme featuring new work, the best of international artists and some old favourites. Project has supported brave, creative and amazing ideas since 1966. This season marks a step in a new direction for Project and the launch of a new strategic vision for our organisation. Project is Ireland’s first arts centre; an independent and ambitious multidisciplinary organisation in the heart of Dublin with a local, national and international remit. We are a home for contemporary arts, a producing house, a resource for artists and a critical hub. Project works with artists across all art forms to make and present extraordinary work that inspires and provokes audiences. Project Arts Centre was founded in 1966 as Project 67. When the founders of Project Arts Centre came together they did so with the philosophy that a creative person is capable of managing their own affairs; Project was an organisation set up, managed and governed by artists – the founding spirit of Project was centred on artists at a time when art was created in established institutions. Project became a home for the independents; for artists whose work challenged the status quo. Project was created at a time of change in our country and in the wider world. Looking to the future is embedded in our DNA. Over the years Project’s personality has always reflected these values, whether embracing the punk movement, presenting edgy contemporary performance or confounding audiences’ ideas of what constitutes an exhibition. We are proud of this legacy but it is not a history that lies heavy on our shoulders; it is a history of reinvention, of evolution, of looking to the future and of change.
As we roll out our new strategy in the coming months, we look forward to welcoming you to Project to experience some of that inspiration. Be Brave! Come visit us at Project Arts Centre. Cian & the whole Project team.
“Very helpful staff, excellent bar/café upstairs. All-in-all an awesome place.” - Excentrus on Tripadvisor

Our 50th anniversary in 2016 provided a catalyst to re-examine our purpose as a space for artists and audiences. As Ireland’s first arts centre we used this occasion to reflect, to re-imagine our future and to develop new ways to ensure that everything we do remains innovative and is delivered to the highest possible standards under the best possible conditions. Project’s independence and history has always been defined by three things, Artists, Location and Ambition – these will continue to play an important role in the Project of the future.
Visual Arts Programme 2018 As Project embarks on a new era, the Visual Arts programming for late 2017 and 2018 proposes to align areas of common interests. Though the first four exhibitions may seem rather different in character they all are part of the curatorial baggage I have brought with me to Ireland. The result of continued conversations with specific artists over years, are already shaping projects of Olav Westphalen, Szabolcs KissPál and Nicoline van Harskamp. Those in the pre-planning phase by Agnieszka Polska or Åsa Sonjasdotter share interconnecting interests such as the critical power of language, artist as archivist and collector, the museum format to interrogate and challenge canonic approaches and routines, or present scenarios of an alternate society. I plan to support new national and international commissions that take a research-oriented approach and reflect on how artists use a range of methods of inquiry to help construct knowledge in different disciplines, drawing attention to shared and often conflicting cultural trajectories in understandings of particular knowledge. The upcoming program also wishes to further contribute to the discourse on the viability of the exhibition format, the conditions of art production, the responsibilities of being a public institution and art as an alternative space for democratic operation.
Living through various turns, with its manifold history, or rather histories, Project has always offered a model space for negotiating the complexities of and catalysing discussions on the contemporary condition as well as investing in the arts to nurture social capital. Therefore one of the core parts of next year’s programming will be the preparation and launch of an analytical survey into Project’s history in order to gain a novel understanding about how its development reflects and connects to the wider institutional, cultural and socio-political histories nationally and internationally. The cycle will explore and work with selected episodes of Project’s history and will develop through temporary events, displays and hopefully longer-term off-site projects in collaboration with arts professionals and various communities, individuals, and parallel institutional research. The archive will become a “temporary institution” that can critically reflect on the current urgencies and the conditions of the often hijacked (by administration, market, politics, etc.) cultural operation and would welcome the contradictory and ambiguous to advance strategies and sustainable models formed on the basis of continuous uncertainty and political pressure. Dx2 Double Duets Presented by: Firkin Crane / Genre: Dance Dates: 9-11 November / Time: 7.30pm Space: Space Upstairs / Price: €14-€16 Description A double bill of dance from Firkin Crane on Tour. Dx2 presents TOST by Dylan Quinn Dance Theatre alongside You and Me, and You by Laura Murphy & Rob Heaslip in an exciting evening of new dance work. TOST explores the space between two noises, two happenings, two places and two people. With hundreds and thousands of people trapped in the space of nothingness, forced from one place but locked out of another, TOST questions the empty void between, where the screams of anguish are as deafening as the silence of action. A collaboration between Enniskillenbased choreographer Dylan Quinn, German dance artist Jenny Ecke, renowned Irish artist Paddy McCann, and UK composer and vocal artist Andy Garbi. In You and Me, and You, Laura Murphy and Rob Heaslip rekindle the fire in their performance through a series of misfires and misadventures, eventually discovering that persistence is the only inspiration they need. In an intimate setting, they invite you to become a witness as they search to redefine their existing relationship by opening up to everything that can be right or wrong. Now in its second year, Firkin Crane on Tour presents exciting and new independent dance to audiences across Ireland. MoMCo is dedicated to highlighting, researching and mediating the hidden, comedic aspects of modern and contemporary art. The classical notion of reckless, avant-garde bravado has been largely debunked, not least for its implicit sexism and open Eurocentrism. But the underlying comedic mechanisms deserve re-examination. For this first exhibition, MoMCo is presented in the form of a tentative historical chart and a series of clay figurines depicting key-moments in bona fide art history. Furthermore, MoMCo is proud to present Resuscitations, its first temporary exhibition of contemporary art, comprising video works by Agnieszka Polska (PL), Roee Rosen (IL), Sally O'Reilly (UK), Gernot Wieland (AT/DE), and Olav Westphalen (DE/US). Olav Westphalen is a German-American artist whose work frequently takes the form of games, entertainment or cartoons. He exposes the cultural blind spots and hypocrisies of the social and cultural contexts he inhabits. He plays both sides of the high-low divide, producing mass-media comedy and cartoons while showing in museums and galleries.

From Fake Mountains to Faith Genre: Visual Arts / Exhibitions / Price: Admission Free Dates: 23 November 2017 - 13 January 2018 Time: 11am to 7.30pm / Space: Gallery Description From Fake Mountains to Faith investigates political communities as complicatedly constructed entities. Departing from the current authoritarian Hungarian state policy and the creation of ‘illiberal democracy’, the work aims to analyse the anatomy of the actual political and cultural philosophy. It examines institutional and historical narratives while looking at the shifting political and public perspective on trauma and memory. Turul2 Still from the video The Rise of the Fallen Feather, 2016 Image Credit: Courtesy the artist Credits The Rise of the Fallen Feather and The Chasm Records was commissioned and supported by Edith-Russ-Haus für Medienkunst Oldenburg in 2016. Opening Thurs 23 November 6-8pm, All welcome Artist talk 23 November 5.30pm
The project consists of two large format docu-fiction videos (Amorous Geography, The Rise of the Fallen Feather) and an installation presented as a fictitious museum setting (The Chasm Records). They interconnect three major elements in a broader historical and cultural framework: the symbolism of ‘ethnic landscape’ and political geography, the romantic historiography of a nations myths of origin, and the ‘turanism’ as a reemerging form of political religion. Budapest-based artist and cultural activist Szabolcs KissPál works in the intersection of new media, visual arts and social issues. His work has a strong focus on the ideological manipulation of history and misused national symbolism in the public and political discourse. Englishes Presented by: Nicoline van Harskamp / Genre: Visual Arts / Exhibitions / Space: Gallery / Dates: February - March Time: 11am to 7.30pm / Price: Admission Free Description Englishes (2013–ongoing) explores the widespread use and modification of the English language by its non-native speakers. The work depicts the development of the plurality of spoken English that displaces the perceived position occupied by dominant strains of the language. It also addresses the political import of this linguistic development, pointing out how our use of language is consistently entrenched in structures of class and power. Challenging these connotations, van Harskamp proposes a dissolution of English into "Englishes," co- opting it as a common and ever-growing linguistic resource. The exhibition consists of a series of episodic films comprising interview, performance, and scripted fiction that explore the myriad variations of English spoken between people who do not have any other shared tongue. Nicoline van Harskamp is an Amsterdam-based artist whose work considers acts of language and communication in relation to ideology and solidarity through video, installation, and scripted performance. Her previous projects and live works have been staged at Tate Modern, London; Kunst-Werke, Berlin; New Museum, New York; and elsewhere.
