Welcome to Project Light and Love!

Greetings all! This spring I traveled to North Carolina to visit my sister and we had the privilege of attending Shift Charlotte. It was a weekend full of speakers, vendors, and amazing soul-shifting experiences! The main speaker was Denise Linn, someone whom I’ve followed on FB and listened to her guided mediations over and over again (33 Spirit Journeys). When I left North Dakota for this trip I had some life-altering decisions to make. My

intention when attending Shift Charlotte was to receive clear guidance on what would be for the highest and best good for myself and my family. Wow, did I ever receive that guidance while I was there! As the quote below states, the way has been shown to me once I took that first step. I tell you this because I want you to have access to this guidance and support‌and you don’t need to travel to North Carolina to receive it! We have so many things going on in North Dakota that can help nourish your body, mind, and soul. After you read the articles that are published in this magazine, like and follow these writers on FaceBook. Check out their websites. Attend the classes and events they offer. Emotional Alchemy By Erin Oberlander

As a Certified Holistic Aromatherapist and a distiller of essential oils and hydrosols, I am keenly interested in the process of how one thing becomes another—the process of alchemy, if you will. An essential oil comes from a plant, but there is so much more to that process. The plant grows in the earth, it is nourished from the sun, it drinks the waters of the rain, it spreads its pollen on the wind, and it creates its particular chemical compounds within the space of its body. Therefore, all of the elements of nature are present within the growth and life cycle of that plant. Then, when essential oils are distilled, those same elements become something else. The plant material is alchemized through the process of distillation. Heat (fire) and water are combined to create steam which then acts upon the plant material within the space of the distiller to create the ethers, which then re-condense to become the essential oil and the hydrosol. The plant, in the process of breaking, crushing, and heating of its body, has now become the medicine for our use and our healing. So, too, are our own lives. The elements act upon us as we live on this planet. We drink the water, breathe the air, bask in the sun, take our nourishment from plants and animals that have catalyzed the sun’s energy and the minerals we need from the earth. Through those interactions with nature, we grow, we have the ability to thrive, our body’s metabolize, and we internalize those elements. But there is more for us as humans. We also have other forces—those of emotions, intellect, politics, economics, ego, relationships, family, faith and religion—which act upon us and with which we also act. Ours is a life not just of physical metabolism, but of emotional, mental, financial, spiritual, and relational metabolism as well. These forces are often just as strong, if not more compelling, than the forces of nature. And it happens, sometimes through our own actions and sometimes through the actions of others, that those 4

same forces can bend us and break us. These breaks, these tears in our fabric of who we are as a person, these challenges—have you noticed your immediate reaction to them? Is it to hide? Is it shame? Is it fear? Anger? Bitterness? How does the process of being broken cause you to react? For most of us, it seems the first reaction is to run away from the pain. Alternately, we may choose to deny its existence, or, we may lash out in anger. But there is another perspective from which to view these events in our lives if we are willing step back and take a look at the larger picture. There is a way to enact alchemy on these events, too. In fact, there are many ways to use this process of breakage in our favor, transmuting those feelings into something useful and beautiful in the end. Perhaps a more evocative visual description of this concept is warranted. There is a Japanese art of pottery repair. Yes, an art of pottery repair. It is called Kintsugi. The philosophy behind this art is that when a ceramic piece sustains damage, the damage is viewed as a part of the history of that object rather than something to be camouflaged. The cracks in the vessel are filled in with the luster of gold, silver, or even platinum, recognizing that those breaks are an opportunity for the piece to become more valuable as well as beautiful. What if we could view our own journeys like this? How can we learn to transmute the negative experiences, the broken moments, into something that is valuable and beautiful to us? In seasons of intense losses, long stretches of grief, personal health and financial challenges, relationships breaking down, and many other events, we make a choice to become bitter or to become better. It would be my joy now to pass along to those who have ears to hear and open hearts some ideas about how to begin that process of emotional transmutation during these seasons. I will also share how I

have used various tools of the Holistic Aromatherapy trade to aid myself and my clients. 1) Be willing to feel the pain for a time. So many of us would like to skip over this step. The problem is that it is not only dishonest with ourselves, it glosses over an opportunity for growth and healing. Facing the pain is the first step towards transmuting it into something better. Without acknowledging where we are starting, we cannot move forward. It can be very vulnerable to do so. For these moments, I love the nurturing qualities of different flower essential oils. Rose (Rosa damascena) essential oil is the most prized for imparting a gentle sense of self-care and nurture. However, it is quite costly, so as an alternative to that, I recommend Rose Geranium (Pelargonium roseum). ** 2) Recognize that Someone has your back. Now, this is a tricky subject, and we all come from different walks of faith and belief systems. I am a Christian, and I also believe in Universal energy. It has helped me to rewire my thinking to believe that the Divine has my back and my best interests in mind, especially when going through painful times. Relinquishing a sense of control (which is only ever an illusion) can help one begin to move past the pain. Connecting to God through prayer, meditation, sacred readings, and sacred scents can be a comfort, a time of learning, and another form of self-care. For these moments, try essential oils, incenses, and resins that come from the category of the Sacred Scents. Frankincense (Boswellia serrata or Boswellia carterii are good options), Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens), and White Sage (Salvia apiana) are three that have been used historically for grounding, purification, and spiritual practice. They can be used either as the raw plant material for burning, as with smudging sage, burning palo santo chips, or burning the resin of frankincense, or they may also all be diffused in an essential oil diffuser. Up to 10 drops in a diffuser per time is the recommended maximum amount for most spaces. When using these substances, I also recommend journaling. It helps the brain, especially the subconscious, to bring various issues to the surface where they can then be alchemized into an opportunity for healing.

Whether this comes from supportive community, any of the practitioners listed in this publication, a therapist, a trusted friend or family member, or some other source, this is not something about which to feel shame. Therapy is a gift you give to yourself. It is an incredible tool of alchemy for the emotions we experience through difficult times. 6) Establish good habits of nutrition, exercise, and mindset. Just like a plant needs proper nourishment to create the “gold” of essential oils, you also need the proper raw ingredients going into your body and mind to create a positive learning experience out of pain. It takes energy. Fuel your activity level. Eat clean, nourishing foods. Invest in yourself and your health—you are worth it. Juniper essential oil (Juniperus communis) is fantastic for establishing new habits. Diffuse it when you are struggling with making healthy choices or even during exercise. Love yourself and give yourself grace as you enact this alchemy of emotions on your situation. Using these tips, before long, you will begin to see the value of your experience even while you work out the pain. You are a golden work of Kintsugi. **Note: please use all essential oils safely. A Guide To Changing The World By Jeffon Seely

Why do so many people allow the physical world to determine their inner worth? Why must we put so much attention on the world in which we live without opening our minds and hearts to the abundant world that dwells within? Turn on the television, click on the radio, scroll through social media, or browse various websites and watch as your conscious mind is bombarded with a vast array external things. News commentators shouting about which side of the story you should agree with, articles and videos paint the world in a dark shade and if you’re not aware, you can find yourself in this perpetual haze of dark fog. This haze isn’t just brought about by opinions from others. In my life I’ve found that the greatest source of this inner haze is brought about by myself. You too may have experienced this. This haze is created when we let our setbacks and failures outweigh our successes. It forms when we continuously remind ourselves why we are not worthy enough, letting our minds fill with worry, doubt, and anxiety. With the external world fueling these beliefs soon they outnumber the numerous things for which we have to be grateful. The light of gratitude is drowned out by the thick haze produced by these toxic outlooks, beliefs, and attitudes. Moving through this internal fog, insecurity and fear creep into the deep parts of the subconscious slowly seeping joy and possibility from our experience. We look out into our environment and it mirrors the image we’ve created within. Dreams seem out of reach, though we may try, it seems as if everything is stacked against us. This could be in the form of the economy, lack skills, or not finding enough people to support and sustain our endeavors. These short-lived bursts towards our goals often end in disappointment and act as fodder fueling feelings of failure. Years of trying with no measurable progress drains our energy and we look for an escape. Overwhelmed and weighed down with burdens and bills the vast majority to settle into jobs they don’t enjoy. To overcompensate, many acquire things to fill this inner void. Debt rises as people pur6

chase materials to keep up with others. This is shown when we recognize the average American household debt totals over $225k. A non-engaging job creates non-satisfaction, this non-satisfaction creates a void that is often filled by purchasing things. This cyclical motion consumes people for decades as they set their eyes on 65+ when they can finally retire and have time for those things, dreams and gifts that bring them to life. Why do so many live in this small box of limitation? Are we not infinite beings, filled with infinite possibilities? Do we not have the power to create a life that we’d like to live? Growing up, I too had big dreams, goals and aspirations that called out to me. As a half-black, half-white child in Salt Lake City, Utah, I soon began to see how powerful another person’s perspective of you can actually be. There’s something that happens when people in your community, teachers, peers and some of their parents are unwilling to see you in the same light they see others. My mother and grandparents always reminded me that I could become anyone I’d like to be. But even with these positive reinforcements, I allowed the toxic judgments from others to taint my inner world. I carried these beliefs with me for many years. It was as if I forgot that someone’s opinion of me does not have to become my reality. It was as if I believed that the outer world had greater power than my inner world. It was as if I believed I had a predestined fate and lacked the strength to create a life I wanted to live. I had dreams to change the world as I grew into adulthood but I first had to ask myself, do I even have the power to change myself? Can I transform my life and rise above the struggles of the past, the seeming setbacks and disappointments and finally become who I believe I am here to be? I searched for years, hoping to find something that would allow me to heal the planet and myself. I looked in books, listened to sermons and inspirational messages and studied. I thought I would find an answer. What I realized was that I’ll never discover a magic wand that will change the world, however, I have the ability to change my inner world. As I change my inner world, I shift the way I interact with others, resolve unconscious biases, rediscover my gifts, passions, and purpose, and most importantly improve the relationship with myself. If we are willing to do this, everything begins to change. Self-love is the new revolution. If you truly love you, this love will flow out into every experience, interaction and environment you enter. If we are willing to examine our inner world, we begin to see that the strongest enemy and greatest oppressor is found within. It comes in the forms of anxiety, negative emotions, destructive habits, toxic thoughts, no clear direction or purpose. These cause people to defeat themselves, settle into mediocrity, join the herd, and doubt themselves. This invites debt, stress, prescription pills, chaotic relationships, and fear to become a permanent state of life. There are a handful of practices we can embrace to create a shift and inner transformation, strengthening the relationship with ourselves and ultimately the world. These practices ignite a torch of awareness that you can carry into the depths of your being and illuminate the areas that create, store and cause these negative and non-empowering feelings, thoughts, emotions, beliefs and attitudes.

1- Mindfulness - Have you realized you are alive? We take an average of 25,000 breaths each day, be mindful of at least one. Feel the presence of the earth spinning beneath you, the sun shining above you, the breath flowing through you and your heart beating within you. Being mindful helps you remember you are living in the present moment, not as a victim of the past or future. 2 - Meditation - There is a piece of peace always within reach inside of you. Allow yourself to create a sense of stillness within. You can do this sitting with your eyes closed, when talking with others, when working or driving. Let your breath be your anchor, connecting you to this moment. Remember, you are not at the mercy of the thoughts that flow through you but you are that which empowers the thoughts that flow through you. 3 - Awareness - Be aware of how you show up each day. Be aware of what you are using your energy to create. Things cannot change unless you are willing to create that change. Awareness causes us to look at where we place our resources, what kind of things we support in the world, and what we are feeding our mind and body. 4 - Catch Your Thoughts - To quiet a noisy mind, remember that you are the thinker. Treat thoughts like clouds floating through the sky on a warm summer day. You need not attach to these thoughts, instead, you can decide which thoughts you’ll focus on. Be willing to catch yourself when you spiral into a negative, toxic state and as the thinker, consciously replace the negative thought with a more empowering one. No one can do this for you but you. 5 - Direct Your Energy - Each day you are given a blank canvas to color anyway you’d like. You have 4 brushes that you carry with you. These brushes are your thoughts, choices, emotions, and actions. You dip these brushes into colors you choose and color your reality as you wish. You need not continue to repaint the same reality each day, at any given moment you can create a new experience. You control the thoughts you think, choices you choose, emotions you fuel, and actions you commit. With these things you assist in creating your life. Please note, it is easy to express this in words but an entirely different thing when we begin to apply this to our lives. When we take the steps to embrace these simple, yet profound practices in our lives, we discover even deeper issues and hidden obstacles that have been stored in our subconscious minds. Don’t fear, you carry the light. Peace, love, compassion, transformation, unity, equality and connection must first begin within. You are the changeagent who embodies light in such a way that when you show up in the physical world you are conscious and aware of the present moment and willing to share your light with everyone and everything. The transformation first begins within then trickles out through your interaction with others. This positively influences how you live each day and in this regard, you have the power to change the world. Even if it is in the small pocket of the globe you find yourself in. All change and transformation flows from the inside out.

Gluten-Free on Your Terms

How self-diagnosing with FOOD can be hiding what is really going on with your health By Ashley Nadeau

I am Ashley Nadeau a Registered BIE Practitioner and Health Coach. I am passionate about relaxing the healing process and giving my clients lasting results. Self-diagnosing and changing diets to improve stress symptoms seem harmless and at times a necessary strategy. I was placed with that decision almost 4 years ago. With a very government-minded nutrition degree, I did not take this decision lightly and certainly researched endlessly. I was struggling with unexplained health issues myself but was completely ignoring my personal symptoms at this point in my life. My three year old son had terrible allergies, constipation and not adjusting well to a variety of situations. My sweet 10 month old girl was happy at home when letting her sleep often but very uncomfortable with the daycare setting. I was at a point in my grant-orientated career where I found myself frustrated daily and suddenly lost my childcare spot for my daughter. With a tight local daycare economy, I decided to take this opportunity and leave my career to open a GLUTEN FREE in-home-daycare. Like I said, I had researched tremendously and even approached my son’s allergist with my nutritional plans. She was on board with my ideas and knew my capabilities with meal planning. Gluten free is also thought of as a much healthier lifestyle so this was a winwin in my book. At the time, I thought this was the answer to my health concerns and my little guys allergies. In a few short months my health was improving and my son was doing amazing. This next cause-effect, however, was not anticipated and was not in my original plan. Going gluten free put a strain on our family budget, frustrated my marriage and left me feeling guilty and vulnerable. But with our health

results how could I go back to relaxing my family’s diet? Well, we have reintroduced GLUTEN into our diet for almost two years. I didn’t want my son to go to school with a restrictive diet unless completely necessary. Since I did not have medical reasoning to back my FOOD decision I walked away from that lifestyle. I did so with a plan and in the process found out that the gluten free lifestyle was actually hiding some things that I would have never noticed if I had kept it out of our lives. If you are finding yourself in that very same situation and wish to regain your FOOD FREEDOM; I am going to tell you how I walked away. 1. GET CONTROL OF YOUR INNER THOUGHTS – this is by no means a simple task but it is necessary before starting this challenge. In order to control your thoughts you have to recognize where your thoughts are currently. You can meditate on them internally but I find it easier to write them down. 1.1. Write down your current situation: How long have you and/or your family restricted specific foods? What does a typical day look like with this meal approach? Reflect on these for a few days before moving on just in case you would like to make additions. 1.2. Decide what you would like your life to look like: How would you like your day to look? Does this even include meal planning or restrictions? Reflect on these for a few days because you will want to make changes. 1.3. Write a pros and cons list: This task is simply adding the 1.1 & 1.2 together into a side-byside list so you are able to visualize what is going on inside your thought patterns. 2. RECOGNIZE YOU ARE STILL IN CONTROL BUT COULD USE SOME HELP – you maybe are finding yourself more confused and a little frustrated. Do not worry you are only on step two, I will get you completely clear by the end of this page. If you decided that your current FOOD situation does not match your desires let’s get a game plan. Okay, on this current plan you feel physical relief but the mental struggles are starting to out-weight the benefits. I want you to put together a dream team or a support team. 2.1. Who has supported you in your current journey? List personal friends and family while including their role. List anyone from the medical community that has given you guidance and what publications they have provided to support your plan. Finally, list any alternative health providers or practitioners who set you up with your initial goals and also what they used to give you that support. 2.2. Decide who you can turn to for help. You do not

have to do this alone but you do have to know who is able to help you track your new path. With a red pen cross off the individuals on your original list who will not be able to help you with the changes. The best part of this journey is realizing you are in control and staying strong to brush off the negative nay-sayers. 2.3. Make a second side-by-side list that includes symptoms before a gluten-free lifestyle and while consuming absolutely no gluten. Bring this list to your new dream team! 3. FIND OUT THE REAL REASON FOR STRESS SYMPTOMS – with the help of your new team decide why you are feeling relief with a gluten free lifestyle. Rule out opinions; take medical tests and find alternative approaches. The one thing to keep absolutely focused on is do not give up on finding answers. I am not a physician so I cannot give you all the guidance here but I do know some things. 3.1. The most traditional approach is of course Celiac Disease. Make sure you rule out CD and get appropriate guidance with that process. You probably already know but in order to test CD you will need to be consuming gluten. My son has the gene for CD and I still decided to introduce gluten back into our diets based on the fact that he does not have intestinal symptoms currently. I want you to think of this with a different approach. Would you go through a mastectomy if you found you have the gene for breast cancer but did not have a diagnosis? 3.2. Look into blood sugar and carbohydrate metabolism. Are you feeling relief because you are cutting out your processed sugars and sticking to a clean produce and high-protein based food plan? If this is the case you are more than welcome to eat some simple carbohydrates (including gluten-containing breads) in moderation. However, if you felt better on an overly processed gluten-free diet; sugars are probably not the reason for your relief. This is detailed and confusing so just note: are you eating processed sugar or did you cut that out along with gluten? 3.3. Could an overgrowth of bacteria or yeast inside your intestines be causing discomfort? Just a note that yeast and bacteria do not specifically target your GI system, they are not picky and the symptoms do not have to specifically be related to your digestion. I am going to speak to this just a little more personally. I have been on candida cleanses (yeast) with little to no success and actually experienced what they call die-off symptoms without breaking free from the die-off discomfort. This is exactly how it sounds and I will not go into too much detail but I felt that was the end of the road and I could rule out yeast. However, many find this very effective for them and one cleanse can take care of symptoms for a number of years before the yeast overgrowth returns. Then, I looked into

bacteria and more specifically Lyme’s bacteria with Lyme’s co-infections. This personally is what a gluten free diet was hiding in my body. I found tremendous relief from eliminating the ammonia within gluten containing foods because Lyme’s bacteria specifically trapped ammonia in isolated areas causing my symptoms. The only reason I can say this is why I found relief is because I ruled out my other leads and did my research. This was a long road for me because I did not put together my dream team so make sure you start at the top and follow my advice so you can get to your results faster than me. 3.4. Listen to your team, appreciate their advice and follow the direction that feels right for your situation. 4. HEAL YOUR BODY WITHOUT RESTRICTING YOUR DIET – if your goal is to meal plan, stress over small traces of gluten and become over consumed with a lifestyle choice, then my ideas will not work for you. If you want to relax your meal planning and eliminate the extra stress you are placing on yourself look into alternative approaches to healing your body. BIE (Bioenergetic Intolerance Elimination) is, for obvious reasons, my favorite and my first go-to approach when it comes to healing without diet restrictions. Reintroducing frequencies back to the body via acupuncture points to remind the body these substances are either harmful or not harmful can be a powerful tool for FOOD FREEDOM. There are other modalities available that also could help you on this path but while you search just keep your goals in mind. If the approach does not meet your goals move on to the next possibility. 5. LETTING GO OF PAST ATTEMPTS – you can only learn if you first make a mistake. On this journey make mistakes often but let go of your failed attempts without question. Don’t get hung up on something that worked for everyone else if it isn’t working for you. Letting go is easy to do in your own home but when you have been associated in the community as someone needing to follow a specific diet this can be a challenge. I get the question all the time: how did you just start feeding your family gluten again when you were so passionate about the strict diet and the results? I always respond to a questioning remark with an equally appropriate questioning remark: Well, the lifestyle didn’t work for me and if it isn’t working why hang on to the pain if it didn’t line up with my goals? Keep your manners and move on to what is working for you.

Heart Chakra By Char Jung

We have arrived at the doorway to the Heart Chakra. This is the point where many stop. Some people will just plain turn around here and stay somewhere in the first three Chakras….aka the hamster wheel of life. Circling around from stuckness, to a little creativity and expansion only to return to rationalizing techniques and habits so not to grow and leave the “tribe/family” behind. Some will step into the Heart space, but not go too deep. They must still hold onto the controls or reins. Not fully in acceptance of being open to the many emotions and sensations that makes up a full and balanced life. And a few will plunge to the depths of the Heart Chakra letting go and allowing the Self to feel every emotion that arrives in them…knowing that all is well and perfect. This is the fourth Chakra. The Heart Chakra is the middle. It is the bridge between Earth (the first three Chakras are earth, water and fire) and the Heavens (the last three Chakras are the ethers).

It is Thee Sacred Center of the sacred centers.

Located in the middle of the Chakras, the Heart Chakra is about balance. One must find balance between physical connection and emotional connection. As well as, balance between personal power (lower three Chakras) and spiritual energy (upper three Chakras). It comes down to a balance of BEing in this world, but not of this world. The Heart Chakra also balances the masculine and feminine polarities that we either experience or suppress within ourCellves. Let’s look at where the Heart Chakra is physically located on the body. It’s located slightly lower than the shoulders and arms. What are the arms all about? Giving and 10

receiving. For a balanced Heart Chakra, one must give and receive equally. And the key to giving and receiving equally is LOVE. LOVE of Self first. If giving is out of a “should” energy or a “have to” energy or obligation, that is actually at a lower frequency and disease starts…..and pretty much every dis-ease in the body starts at the Heart Chakra. You see, the energy of the Heart Chakra is the King/ Queen/President/ Chief/CEO/Ruler of the body. Whatever label you want to put on it doesn’t matter. What matters is that if the Heart Chakra is not fulfilling its duties, the rest of the organs have to pick up the workload so to speak. The Heart Chakra is where your Inner Child energy lives. If you are not tending to your Heart Chakra with balance and LOVE, then you are not taking care of your True Self…. and your True Self is a Child of Source/God/ YOUniverse. Here at the Heart Chakra is where we first started shaping ourCellves by social conditioning and what won us attention and approval. “Oh! Mommy/ Daddy/Teacher likes it when I do ______. So even though I don’t really care for ______ it makes Mommy/ Daddy/Teacher happy and she/he likes/loves me then so I will continue.” “Oh! Kids like me when I do ______. So even though I don’t, I will continue because they like me.” At the Heart Chakra is where and when we ask our Self/ Inner Child, “What did I reject of my Authentic Self in order to be what everyone wanted me to be?”

Here is what is happening in a person’s life if their Heart Chakra is deficient: * Shy and anti-social * Withdrawn * Cold * Critical * Judgmental * Intolerant of self and others * Lonely * Isolated * Depressed * Narcissism * Difficulty forgiving The traumas and abuses that may have happened to a person would be rejection, abandonment, betrayal, loss of a loved one, constant criticism, shame, sexual abuse, physical abuse and unacknowledged grief. The excessive characteristics of the Heart Chakra would be codependency, poor boundaries, demanding, clingy, jealous, overly sacrificing, and possessive. Balanced Heart Chakra shows up as compassionate, loving, empathetic, Self-loving, peaceful, and good discrimination. Some physical dis-ease that would show up when the Heart Chakra is not healthy and balanced would be disorders of the heart, lungs, thymus, breasts and arms. There would be shortness of breath and circulation problems. As well as, asthma, immune system deficiency and tension between shoulder blades with pains in the chest area. Tools to Help Balance the Heart Chakra are: * Breathing exercises * Stretching out the arms to open up the chest area * Journaling for Self-discovery * Examine relationships * Emotional release of grief * Inner child work * Co-dependency work * Self-acceptance and Self-Love practices * Wearing the color Green

* Eating Green foods * Inhaling and/or diffusing any one or blend of the essential oils of: Jasmine, Lavender, Marjoram, Rose or Geranium. * Carry throughout the day, or hold during meditation, any crystal or rock that is the color of green or pink. The key words for the Heart Chakra are: Compassion, unconditional love of self and others, joy, forgiveness and peace.

Healing at its core is un-hurting ourselves.

When we can simply be with the energy of the pain we are unraveling the old programs. We are showing up for our Inner Child the way we wanted someone to show up for us when it first happened. BE the compassion for Self. BE the peace with You first and that peace ripples out. Once you fully show up for You and LOVE You, speaking your Truth will be a breeze! The Healing Benefits of Art By Gail Pederson

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” ~ Picasso A funny thought for me, since it was hard for me to call myself an artist until a few years ago. I’ve been creating all my life! Art has always been important in my family. I am fortunate to have used creative expression and art appreciation as major stress reducers and healing throughout my life. I was a “sickly” child with asthma. Throw in a little medication that made me hyperactive and VERY restless, I know I was a challenge for my mother. She was a seamstress, a fiber artist, using fabric to create keepsakes, quilts and treasured items, (and made most of my clothes). She channeled my inner artist and fed me a continual supply of crayons, paints and colored pencils to keep me occupied. She encouraged me to explore music, poetry, piano and dance. Opportunities in the schools and community offered many fine art experiences as I grew up, community concerts, plays and summer art programs were available. My father discovered his talent in the ’70’s after I had left home and married. He started dabbling in lapidary (stone cutting and polishing) and making silver jewelry as a hobby. This soon became his full time business…and his stress, casting gold and faceting semi-precious stones. Both my husband and I learned to polish stones and made some mean silver rings, etc, which supplemented our meager military salary, selling our wares to his fellow soldiers. Moving back home, after Dennis’ discharge, we both went to college. I soon realized that with the stress of nursing school, I needed a creative outlet. Taking advantage of community education in Fargo, I took my first stained glass class. Completing my nursing education, returning home to Valley City, I rewarded myself with stained glass and Ceramics classes through VCSU. I was “thrown” into the world of clay, with my husband soon following. We thought out loud, “This is what we can do when we retire!” Through many “coincidences”, even though we aren’t retired, we are now the artists and owners of The Pottery Parlour. 12

It is a multipurpose ceramic studio, located 2 miles South of Valley City, and housed in our old dairy barns. We create functional and fine art, earthenware and stoneware creations. Pieces fired using horse hair or feathers are a featured item. Located along the Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway we also have over 5000 ceramic molds! These are the backbone of the business, providing a base for the contemporary “paint

your own” ceramics. Let’s look at the healing benefits of art. For the most part, people can have two types of connection with art. Very broadly we can be art-makers, including creative or expressive arts, or art-lookers. That would include music, performances, reading books, even watching movies. Art sensing could be another statement, as it broadens art-watching with more of your senses observing the art. This transcends time and place as demonstrated by someone with dementia, who can sing familiar songs or play an instrument from their past. Art-doing and benefiting from that can create biopsychosocial changes. A study of nursing students who became the art-makers in a study, established it “created a positive impact on their general health and mental well-being. Taking an art class for ten weeks, they reduced stress and fatigue, claimed awakened creativity and increased a sense of community with their fellow students.” Art-making can involve: • Music: singing, dancing or using an instrument. • Words: writing and acting. • Making 2 dimensional objects: this involves coloring, drawing, painting and photography. • Making 3 dimensional art: including baking and cooking, fiber art, glass, clay and woodworking. This is my dimension of creativity. To think of food as art! What art-making or doing are you involved in? Have you used an art form to assist you in solving a problem? The following is a little assessment to see how something may be beneficial to you.

1. What cognitive response do you have towards an art activity you are doing? It can be either negative or positive. Are you enjoying the process? Is it fun or are you having negative, self limiting thoughts…. “This is so bad,” or “What a waste of time”. 2. Emotional responses are often the reason we connect with or abandon an art form. Music is an excellent example. It can change and help us process our emotions. Ask yourself if you are feeling what you want to get from the activity. Are they providing you with a sense of peace, accomplishment, centeredness and satisfaction? 3. Physical responses can be very common with an art activity. A good friend would always panic and almost get physically ill when our yearly retreat would culminate in an art project. She went from panic to a sense of accomplishment and peace with her creations. 4. Social responses involve sharing your art work or creating work within a group. We have groups out to our studio and it is a great outlet to share and create community. There are some expressive art forms that are not for sharing, such as journaling; or for me, singing. I will admit to singing (and dancing) the Hokey Pokey with my Grandchildren, though. Oh what joy! 5. A spiritual response to art/craft-doing can be a very profound experience, or not…I have used art expression to work through tragic trauma events and deaths. I have used it for the expression and healing of my own illnesses. I always feel a spiritual element/entity around me when I am creating. Actually I call help in to my creative endeavors. Generally, benefits of participating in arts and crafts can promote relaxation and relief from worrying. It increases self confidence while decreasing negativity and anxiety. A person also releases endorphins and creates new pathways in the brain with creative activities. One of the true pleasures and part of our business plan for The Pottery Parlour is sharing our art and the fun of “Playing with Clay”. We sponsor classes through our city Park and Rec department, which is where I first had a “Clay Encounter”. The imagination of a group of children is wonderful to watch. We also host tours, birthday parties, Girl’s Night Out and special events. Then there are the adults, which refers back to the first quote…I am not creative…I can’t do it. Banish those thoughts and allow the process of experiencing the arts to take an important part of your life. You won’t regret it. Crystals for the Heart Chakra By Char Jung

The Sanskrit name for the Heart Chakra is Anahata, meaning “sound that is made without any two things striking,” as well as “unstuck,” “unhurt,” “fresh,” and “clean.” As the Heart Chakra becomes free of grief from old wounds it becomes innocent and radiant again, back to the childlike state that we are at our Core. The element of the fourth Chakra is air. Air represents openness and freshness. Air also represents lightness, softness and simplicity. When we fall in love, we feel like we are walking on air! Lastly, air represents breath... the vital process through which we are alive. Which when a person is fully living, they are taking in deep breaths of Life Force to “breathe life” into their projects/relationships/job/business/etc. Opening the Heart Chakra involves creating balance (covered in the Heart Chakra article), breathwork and the biggest step is transcendence of ego and allowing your Self to surrender to forces greater than you. LOVE. To let go and LOVE without any concern or thoughts if you will be approved of and Loved back is the scariest thing humans face. This is a sentence that is best felt and not thought about. Grab a couple green crystals or your favorite essential oil and sit in stillness feeling the emotions that bubble up from this sentence:

A Different Take on Change - Observation without Judgement By Tone-Lise Stenslie

Most of us have learned that we cannot “fix” someone else. However, we keep trying to “fix” ourselves based on the belief that there is something inherently wrong with us, or that we’re not enough. We try adding to our self-image by reaching desired goals. We try getting rid of undesirable feelings and behaviors, or we attempt to transcend stressful experiences. These approaches are helpful and necessary at various times in our lives. However, there is a different approach to change I invite you to consider. Are you willing to learn about and observe your own patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving without judgment? I was catapulted into the “observation without judgment” approach by a guided imagery session years ago. The session tapped into my subconscious mind, and brought to light deeply buried self-hatred. I was initially shocked, as I saw myself as a cheerful and positive person. For two weeks I simply “sat with it.” I pondered the pattern of self-rejection in its various disguises, observing without judging, realizing the insanity of it, while somehow being able to meet myself with compassion. It felt like a time of acceptance and grieving. Bringing this personality pattern to light became a powerful catalyst for positive change in my life. Through the willingness to observe without judgment, deep inner change became possible. Based on nature and nurture, we develop coping mechanisms that we often are blind to. These coping mechanisms become our autopilot and prevent us from being fully present. They lead to pain and suffering in our lives, and limit our freedom to respond with clarity rather than compulsively react. Without self-awareness, we tend to be in the “trance” of our personality patterns. It becomes a bit like what psychologist Abraham Maslow referred to: if the only tool you have is a hammer, it’s tempting to treat everything as a nail. Below is a list of a few personality patterns. See if you recognize yourself in one or more of them, and keep in mind that we tend to over-do what we are naturally good at. • Trying too hard to perfect your self, situations, people, or things. 16

• Trying too hard to have a connection with others. • Being overly focused on creating and achieving goals. • Being overly sensitive to how others respond to you. • Retreating too often into the world of ideas and concepts. • Being overly prepared for anything that could go wrong. • Being overly busy anticipating and planning new experiences and fun

stuff. • Being overly demanding. • Repeatedly numbing out to anything that could disrupt your comfort. The paradox is that the more you can meet yourself with kindness and acceptance, the easier change happens. Furthermore, we cannot heal what we are not aware of. In order to free ourselves from our compulsive and obsessive ways of operating, it is essential to gain clarity and perspective about patterns that keep us stuck. Don’t assume you know what they are. We are often blind to our most dominant patterns. Here are some questions and suggestions to get you started. • What motivates you? What gets you out of bed in the morning? • How do you habitually respond to stress and conflict? Reread the above list to see if you resonate with any of them. • How do other people perceive you? Do you have the courage to ask for honest feedback? We all tend to have a distorted image of ourselves, either inflated, deflated, or both. • Utilize different tools to speed up the awareness and change process. These include, but are not limited to, the Enneagram of personality styles, meditation and self-reflection, journaling, and working with a coach or mentor. • Receive regular BodyTalk Sessions. What does it mean to observe your self? Practicing self-observation is different from navel-gazing. Navel-gazing happens when we’re obsessively consumed with every nuance of an experience, taking it personally, and becoming overly identified with our feelings and stressful “ego” stories. To observe yourself, practice being a neutral witness to your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and reactive patterns without labeling it good or bad. This takes lots of practice, so be kind and patient with your self. The challenge is that we so easily judge, numb, deny, ignore, defend, identify with, or blame. With time, you will be able to “catch yourself in the act,” and thus have the freedom to change how you respond right on the spot. You know you have changed when you can stay calm rather than stressfully react to something that used to trigger you. Each time you’re able to respond in a more calm and constructive way, you strengthen a new neural pathway. Gradually, you will notice a greater sense of freedom and inner peace. Here are some suggestions to “play” with: • Observe yourself with childlike curiosity. Do you tend to withdraw when life becomes stressful? Or do you become more demanding? Or perhaps your inner critic becomes really loud. Take a look at the above nine strategies again. Can you see yourself in any of them? We’ve adopted these coping mechanisms from a young age in order to feel okay. When over-used, these patterns get in the way of living joy-fully and to our fullest potential. • Are you willing to temporarily feel a bit uncomfortable by bringing reactive patterns to “light” without judging them?

If so, the change process has already started. By being willing to observe stressful patterns without judging them you can uncover underlying causes of your pain and suffering. This opens the door to more compassion towards self and others, which leads to deep inner healing. As a holistic health practitioner, I see healing as enhancing our level of awareness: awareness about our true nature, the essence and beauty of what and who we truly are, and awareness about what keeps us stuck in suffering and pain. As Albert Einstein pointed out, we cannot solve a problem from the same level of thinking that created it. This is true for us individually, and collectively. I invite you to meet yourself and others with compassion, observing without judgment, and experimenting with new ways of “doing life.” If you stick with it, this approach to change can become a gateway to inner peace and joy.
