Project Light and Love
Summer 2016
Welcome to Project Light and Love! One thing I learned from my mother when I was young was to always stop and smell the roses… and the lilacs…and the peonies…and don’t forget the petunias! Growing up, I just didn’t understand this and her love for plants, trees, birds, and the outdoors. Now, as an adult in this busy world, I fully understand. I don’t pass the
lilac bush or the peonies in my backyard without giving them a big ol’ sniff! It is in that moment when I can be fully present and enjoy their beauty. Their blooms won’t be there forever and I want to appreciate their scent every chance I get. My wish for you this summer is that you take the time to slow down and appreciate all that is around you. Take time to be outside and enjoy the beautiful mornings and serene evenings. Be fully present with your kids, grandkids, spouse, and pets without the phone or remote in your hand. I hope that you are able to take some time during this beautiful summer to enjoy this issue of Project Light and Love! ~ Michelle Lytle

How to Activate Your Inner Goddess By Heidi Tungesvick
Inside of you there is a “go-getter, a striving achiever that puts your logical talents and traceable good works out into the world. That is your inner God or Divine Masculine. The Divine Masculine is all about competition, strength, linear, logical, left-brain expression. He is the warrior. He is the part of us that is heralded in our world today as preferable and even superior. Many even believe that the Divine Masculine is the only divinity. I am here to tell you that there is a power inside of you that is the equal and opposite counterpart to that inner God-your inner Goddess. Your inner Goddess is all about cooperation, softness, intuitive, cyclical creative, right-brained expression. She is the peacemaker. She is the Divine Feminine. By activating her, you will balance out your being in ways you may have never even imagined before. Come back to yourself. The Divine Feminine is grace and receptivity embodied. Your inner Goddess is the part of you that wildly creates with abandon and pleasure. She fruits the gifts of the soul without reason or judgment. She is the creative force that perpetuates life, beauty, and exciting unpredictability. If given some love, attention, and a little bit of room to grow, your inner Goddess can be activated. If awoken, she will help you to bring your life and works to new heights and levels of amazing creativity. She will give you a deeper and more profound understanding of yourself and the world around you. The first step in activating your inner Goddess is simply 4
acknowledging that she exists. For many of us, this is outside of the paradigms that we are taught. All of the ancient great religions and philosophies understood the duality of our world. The duality is the light/dark, up/down, yin/yang, and male/female, aspects of not just our biological world, but our psyches and souls as well. To help you on your journey of discovering your inner Goddess, consider trying the following : 1. Instead of always going outside of yourself for answers, learn to listen to your inner wisdom. Give your BFF, your therapist, and Google a break. Tap into the inner divine. Exercise: Find a beautiful quiet place in nature or your home. Sit quietly and comfortably. Clear your mind. Be receptive and open to any messages your body is telling you. Honor these messages as you would the opinions of a trusted and loved advisor. Keep these messages in mind when going about the rest of your day and make your choices consciously. Thank your body for all that it does for you on a daily basis. 2. Let go of achievement and control and allow the flow of total receptivity. Take in the energy of a place or an experience. Stop multi-tasking once in a while and practice mindfulness. Exercise: Integrate the power of receptivity into your daily activities. It can be anything; yoga, eating, watching your favorite movie, reading, going for a walk, or writing in a journal. It can be anything. The important part is that you are focusing on the activity. Nothing else. Before you begin, ask the Divine Goddess Energy to join you in this activity.
Project Light and Love
Summer 2016
Examples: If you are taking a walk around your neighborhood, don’t listen to your iPod or talk on the phone. Instead, listen to the sounds of nature around you, focus on the feeling in your body as it moves, the temperature of the air on your face, the activity surrounding your neighborhood. Pay attention without judgment to the thoughts drifting in and out of your mind. Receive the experience without qualifiers or any focus on the result. When eating, do only that. Don’t watch TV or read at the same time. Focus on the different tastes of the food. The pleasure of chewing it. The feel of it on your tongue. The magic of satiety that you feel with food in your belly. Be receptive to the thoughts, feelings, and emotions pervading the experience. 3. Incorporate intentional ritual into everyday tasks. Say a prayer to the Divine Feminine Collective (which includes your female ancestry) for support, guidance, and blessings as you put on your perfume, brush your hair, or drink your tea. Tap into the Divine Feminine Collective as you parent your children, clean your house, or drive to work. The compassionate wisdom in that collective is always there with understanding and guidance. This is Goddess Power. Example Prayer: Divine Feminine Collective, as I brush my hair, imbue my person with the caring support that mothers give their daughters. Send the wisdom of those who have come before me through each strand of hair and down into my body and mind. Help me to feel the love and compassion of the
Summer 2016
Goddess so that I may go about my day with comfort in my heart and generous creativity in my actions. Thank you. -Amen Feel free to change the wording as it applies to the activity and your spiritual preferences. Prayer doesn’t need to be memorized or include especially eloquent wording. It does need to be from the heart. It can be as simple as,-Goddess bless me! HEALING TOUCH: A Path to Health and Balance By Gail Pederson, SPRN, HN-BC
My practice as a Holistic Nurse has a foundation of energy-based therapies. Healing Touch, which is an endorsed program through the American Holistic Nurses Association, is my major practice modality. It is a relaxing, nurturing, bioenergy therapy that uses gentle touch to assist in balancing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Healing Touch works with your energy field to support your natural ability to heal. It is safe for all ages and works in harmony with standard or allopathic medical care. Healing Touch was founded in 1989 as a continuing education program for nurses by Susan Morales, Dorothea Hover-Kramer and Janet Mentgen. I first experienced Healing Touch while at a workshop for my certification in Holistic Nursing in 1996. A skeptical believer, I experienced a major reduction in the acute pain I was experiencing that weekend, after one of the class participants volunteered to give me a HT treatment. Learning the basics at that time, I brought it home, excited to pursue Healing Touch more. I was fortunate to take some of my first classes from Janet Mentgen, one of the founders, when she established the educational program in Bismarck. At that time I completed
Summer 2016
4 of 5 classes towards certification. The fifth class is preparation for certification, which I chose not to do. That was in 1997 and at that time the certification process was only open to nurses. That was then. This is now, and classes are open to anyone…as everyone has innate healing abilities! Healing Touch has a well developed curriculum that is based on many healing modalities. Barbara Brennan, Rosalyn Bruyere and Bruh Joy’s teachings are incorporated into the training curriculum, as well as concepts from shamanic and aboriginal traditions. Use of a person’s own intuitive assessments and powers “greater than yourself” are incorporated. It works with your bioenergy system, which, while not measurable by traditional means, has been utilized for thousands of years in healing traditions. No! Excuse me, a new study has actually mapped and recognized the meridian system used in acupuncture. Healing Touch is used in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, private practices, hospices, and spas. Today, Healing Touch is taught in universities, medical and nursing schools, and other settings around the world. I know of 3 medical facilities in our region
Project Light and Love

that have instituted a Healing Touch practice. Sanford in Fargo has a pilot program in their palliative care unit and Altru in Grand Forks has an active program for staff and patients. My brother recently had surgery at Mayo/St Mary’s and you can request a treatment there, also. He had his own private practitioner, though. Let’s hope more facilities catch on. The reasons I favor Healing Touch over other healing modalities are the facts that there are treatments outlined for specific problems, the program has strict standards of care in place, and it is evidence-based. As a nurse, I have had the “Nursing Process” burned into my brain. That means collecting subjective and objective data of the problem you are having. Subjective data is what you perceive as the problem, such as pain or anxiety levels. Objective data includes my assessment of your biofield. Then, the creation of a plan and the action (the treatment) leads to the outcome. Hopefully that outcome is the resolution of the problem. Plan of care may continue with your own “homework”. A future plan of care for further treatments and self care are developed with your participation. Specific treatments for headache pain include different types of headaches. For example techniques for migraine, stress, and sinus headaches can be utilized. Treatments such as Energetic Lymphatic Drainage, Surgical Wound Sealing and Hopi Back Technique focus on the needs of the client. Healing Touch is an evidence-based practice. Research has been done and is being done. These studies demonstrate that there is support for considering Healing Touch for providing integrative care and that patients evaluate it highly. These studies do not “prove” that Healing Touch “works”. Research continues to build the evidence base of positive outcomes in response to Healing Touch. However, it should be noted that individual experiences may vary.
• Supporting cancer care, both pre- and post-treatment, Healing Touch can often provide a sense of comfort and connection during difficult cancer regimens. It can clear residual energetic debris from the energy field as a result of chemotherapy or radiation treatments. WHAT HAPPENS DURING A HEALING TOUCH SESSION? The first session involves a consultation in addition to the Healing Touch session. I will ask a series of questions about your physical, mental, and emotional situation, and will answer your questions about Healing Touch and my procedure. We will talk about short and long term goals that we both expect from the Healing Touch Session. I use soothing music which connects with each of the Chakras. You lay fully clothed on a massage table while I gently place my hands slightly above or on the body. Depending what you need for treatments, I may have you roll over on to your stomach. The session generally lasts 40 to 60 minutes. People frequently report feeling deeply relaxed and peaceful during and after the session, and pain is decreased. Because there may be a cumulative effect of using Healing Touch over time, regular sessions are recommended. My own personal experience in my practice using Healing Touch has been very rewarding. The first person I used HT with was a 6 year old just coming back after having a fractured arm set. His fingers were cool and pale and he was restless and in pain. I explained HT to his parents and they were aware of it (visiting Grandma from California). Within a few minutes of using what is called “Hands in Motion” he said there was a wind going through the cast. His fingers turned warm and he calmed, falling asleep shortly thereafter. I continued to use my Healing Touch abilities with my family and friends for many years before opening my own practice 1 1/2 years ago. While the skeptical believer has left the scene, I have been amazed at the successes my clients have had! I think everyone needs an energy system “tune up” regularly. My clients tell me they just seem to know when it is time to come back in for another treatment. Let me help you reach your maximum healing power. Please give me a call if you have any questions or to make an appointment today!
HOW CAN HEALING TOUCH BENEFIT YOU? • It can reduce the effects of stress and improve anxiety and depression. Clients relate they have a calm, relaxed feeling for days after a treatment. They sleep better and seem to tolerate life in general better. • Decreased pain is an experience people have, markedly reducing their perception of their pain following a treatment. Root Chakra By Char Jung
In the Premiere Issue of Project Light and Love, the article “Mastery of Life Through the Chakras” covered an overview of the seven main Chakras. In this article we go more in depth with the Root Chakra…. but first, a quick recap: Chakras are pulsating energy centers and they are located at every joint in the body as well as the seven major Chakras, which are located from the top of the head to the tip of the tailbone. The seven main Chakras are filters for the physical body and are directly correlated with the organs of the body. Chakras filter energy from the outside of the body to the inside of the body. Think of the filters in vehicles, clothes dryers, airconditioners, ventilation systems, etc. All of these filters “catch” items that do not support the system. When the filters are dirty and filled with debris, the car, dryer or cooling system does not work properly. This is exactly how the Chakras work for the physical body. Although, what the Chakras “catch” is the low vibration thoughts, beliefs, and experiences that do not support the system of the body. This is a tad bit more difficult to see than the dirt in equipment filters. The Major Chakras have an energy tone that resonates with specific music notes and colors. Please see the drawing. Notice the darker, low vibration colors are located closest to Earth. As you move up the body, towards the “Heavens”, the colors move to a higher vibration. Much like a spiritual journey or mastery of life...when we are BE-ing in the Love, we have a higher vibration of energy/life force. Now Let’s Take a Tour of the Root Chakra…. The Root Chakra is located in the area of the tailbone. This area/energy holds the original eight cells from the time of a Summer 2016
person’s physical creation. These original eight cells never change throughout a person’s lifetime. Every other cell in a body changes and it is said that every five to eight years we actually have a brand new body! These original eight cells actually contain the energy of who a person really is at their “core”… The True Self/Light. This is so interesting that who we are at the “core” is located at our Root Chakra where all the emotions of survival and tribal beliefs are located. Why is this so interesting? Well, you think we would be able to be our True Self when we are with our family/tribe, but actually that is where we begin to “cover up” our True Self/Light. Because when we are under the age of nine we are like “sponges” that soak up all that we see and hear that is happening around us. During this time, a small child just wants to be loved and accepted…so at a young age their survival techniques kick in. They quickly figure out what will bring them safety, approval, and love. Sometimes this means by not being their True Self from the “core” because when they were being their True Self they were made fun of or told it was wrong. They needed to act a certain way in order to get attention or be socially acceptable...or simply to stay safe. Fear, which is the “demon” of the Root Chakra, is then activated and choices are made based on the beLIEf that it is not safe to be/do/have what is True for the person. The “cover-up” or “cloaks” begin to hide the Light of the Core. The child either runs and hides or lashes out...hence the fight or flight energy is activated. A habit is born and an authentic Self is hidden out of survival. As the child becomes an adult, the same survival techniques are now being used out of a habit. The adult doesn’t even realize that they are not allowing their Self to be who they really are at the “core” because they are trying not to feel the original feeling of unsafe, unloved, or unaccepted. They instantly run away from the uncomfortable/unsafe feeling or re-act with anger. It happens so fast that the adult doesn’t even catch when they just added another layer of
Project Light and Love
9
“cover-up” over their Light in order to “survive”. And/or if there were any traumas or abuse at the time of birth or poor physical bonding with the mother, including the mother not wanting the child, then there will be more challenges for the child around feeling safe and loved. There will also be trust issues. All of these experiences become lodged or stuck in the Root Chakra filter. The Root Chakra also contains any inherited traumas from the parents’ survival fears which will be “poured into” the child at the time of conception. Examples would be parents from the holocaust, war, poverty, abuse, etc. Look at your parents...what do they fear? There is a pretty good chance that same fear is running in your energy field. How does one know the status of their Root Chakra? Well, here is what will be happening in a person’s life if their Root Chakra has deficiency characteristics: * Anorexia or very much underweight * Fearful, anxious, restless, difficulty sleeping * Flighty or spacey, paranoid * Difficult sticking to or completing a task * Financial difficulty * Poor boundaries * Fear of success Here is a list of excessive characteristics: * Obesity, overeats * Hoarding, material fixation * Greed * Sluggish and lazy * Tired * Fear of change * Very rigid boundaries Some physical and health problems when the Root Chakra is not balanced will be anything to do with the feet, legs, hips, buttocks, bones and large intestines. Our basic rights for the Root Chakra is the Right to be here, the right to take up this space on Earth, and the right to have what we need in order to survive. The list that Anodea Judith, the author of “Wheels of Life: A User’s Guide to the Chakra System”, gives us to rate the areas of life and the ability to “have” is powerful! See how you rate these areas of Root Chakra Rights on a scale from 0 – 100%: * Money * Comfort * Free Time * Love * Attention * Success * Help from others Do you feel a sense of guilt or ease about these areas? 10
Tools to Help Balance the Root Chakra are: If your Root Chakra is balanced you are able to sit in stillness, you feel safe no matter where you are, you feel grounded and comfortable in your body, you are able to manifest easily and your vitality is high and you are in good health. If you noticed you have experienced some characteristics from the deficient or excessive lists above try one or more of these suggestions: * Walk barefoot on the Earth taking slow, deep breaths. Bring full awareness to your feet touching the Earth. * Visualize a bright, vibrant, healing color of red filling your legs, hips and buttocks. * Wear the color red * Eat red foods * Inhale an Essential oil of Cedarwood, Cypress, Idaho Balsam Fir, or Vetiver for the Root Chakra. * Carry throughout the day, or hold during meditation, any crystal or rock that is the color of red, black, or brown. * Physical activity would be running, walking, and stomping the feet on the ground. The journey or lessons of the Root Chakra is the ability to feel safe, secure, and courageous BE-ing your True Authentic Self...and most definitely the arrival of 2016 is insisting that we are removing the “cloaks and covers” from our Light. In the next issue we will dive into the emotional waters of the Sacral Chakra. ♥ Char Jung is the owner of Doorways To….. located in Jamestown, ND. Crystals for the Root Chakra By Char Jung
One of my favorite authors is Judy Hall. She is a teacher, adventure seeker and writer of many books on the topics of astrology, sacred space and of course, crystals. Judy wrote in The Crystal Bible, “Crystals have been used for millennia to heal and bring balance. They work through resonance and vibration.” Many cultures around the world have used crystals to bring balance and healing to themselves and their space. These cultures understood that in order to bring healing and balance back into their body they needed to add something to their body that vibrated at a higher frequency than the current state they were experiencing.

Project Light and Love
Do you experience any physical ailments from your lower back and hips down to your feet? Do you have creative ideas that never manifest? Do you worry about the future? Do you have habits or addictions that run your life?
11
Which crystals are for the Root Chakra? The easiest way to answer this question is to ask what color is your soil. Is the soil where you live red, black, brown or grey? Now, this doesn’t mean that the color of your soil is the only color of crystal you can use. You can use any of the earth colors that resonate with you. This is just an easy tip to help you remember what the Root Chakra is about and which are the crystals that help bring it back into balance. Black Tourmaline: This crystal helps to deflect negative energy produced by anger, anxiety, and fear. Hematite: Do you absorb other people’s emotions? Hematite helps you to set up emotional boundaries and helps to reflect back the emotions and ill wishes projected at you. Jet: A fossilized wood will help you with issues of trust and depression. Smoky Quartz: This crystal will help process and release old beliefs and emotions that prevent us from experiencing life fully. It will help dissolve energy blocks that keep you from manifesting. Red Jasper: It is the “supreme nurturer”, says Judy Hall from The Crystal Bible. It is a great protecting and grounding stone and will help balance the body. It is a slow working crystal, which is great for those that don’t like fast changes, so carry it for long periods of time.
12
Brown Tourmaline (Dravide): An excellent stone for grounding your energy into the earth. This stone is great if you have troubles feeling comfortable in large groups of people. Also helps with dysfunctional family relationships. These are only a few of the crystals out of many that will help bring balance back into the Root Chakra, but it is a nice start for you. Simply carry one or two that you feel drawn to. You can also meditate with them by placing the crystals on your hips and feet for 15-20 minutes. And with everything, intention is 90%+, so write down or state out loud what you would like to bring healing and balance to in your physical body and life. Rock on! Using Herbs to Enhance Reiki Healing By Tara N. Heyer
Adding herbs and essential oils before, during, and even following a Reiki energy healing session, can play a major role in opening and balancing chakras. There are certain herbs that are very helpful in stimulating and enhancing the healing process. If you can grow your own herbs, that is the absolute best option. If not, then you purchase fresh or dried herbs, just make sure to purchase organic. You can also use essential oils, provided that they are of high, therapeutic quality. Sage is very beneficial in opening the 3rd eye chakra. It is perfect to use during meditation, and for cleansing and protecting your sacred reiki healing space before and after energy healing sessions. This beneficial herb helps open and activate blocked chakras, especially if the person is emotionally imbalanced and lacking confidence. So, if you want to increase the frequencies and vibrations, as well as, attract higher energy, burn or diffuse sage. Frankincense aligns energy centers and encourages healing during a reiki session. It is extremely healing to the crown and 3rd eye chakras especially, but is also beneficial to the root chakra. Diffuse this essential oil or burn the resin prior to a session. It is especially beneficial for women’s health issues. Adding sage together with frankincense provides even more beneficial healing properties. Lavender is a very calming and relaxing herb. Perfect for a new client or maybe if it is going to be a longer reiki session, and especially when there are deep emotional blockages. This herb is also very shielding and protecting. You can diffuse Lavender essential oil to protect the chakras after blockages are removed. This herb works very well with the crown chakra. Lemongrass is another herb that works well with the chakras. This one is best for the solar plexus chakra. If you have a client that suffers with Thyroid issues, try using LemSummer 2016
ongrass. This herb is also beneficial for protecting and shielding, after emotional blockages are removed. Try diffusing the essential oil during a session, and maybe recommend they drink Lemongrass tea following the session to continue to detoxify. Besides herbs for healing, it may be a good idea to recommend that your client eat foods that support the particular chakra that is in need of deeper healing and detoxing. For example, if they have root chakra healing that needs to take place, you may suggest that they eat more red foods, such as berries. Root vegetables are another good suggestion. For the heart chakra, think green. Dark, leafy greens, broccoli or kale are great options for added support. To enhance healing even deeper, consider adding crystals. Here are some basic crystals and the chakras they correspond with: Crown – Clear Quartz/Amethyst, 3rd Eye – Lapis Lazuli, Throat – Chrysocolla/Blue Lace Agate, Heart – Rose Quartz/Green Aventurine, Solar Plexus – Citrine/Tiger’s Eye, Sacral – Carnelian/Orange Calcite, Root – Hematite/Red Jasper. Gently placing the crystal on the chakra it represents during a reiki session can add more healing and clear blockages. Herbs are healing in so many ways. Whether, you are steeping a chamomile tea to calm your mind, or burning sage to clear the energy in your sacred space, consider incorporating them in your daily routine and even adding some to your healing sessions. Remote Sessions: What Are They? And How Is It Possible? By Tone-Lise Stenslie
Many holistic practitioners offer remote or distance sessions. These sessions are done without the client being physically present. They can be done via phone or Skype, or without direct contact with the client during the actual session. I still remember receiving my first remote Reiki session and how amazed I was to notice the physical sensation of warmth in both legs. The first time I did a remote BodyTalk session, I was rather skeptical and thought, “How can this possibly work?”. To my surprise, I received clear “yes” and “no” responses using the neuromuscular biofeedback technique I’d been taught in BodyTalk. I simply used myself as a surrogate while focusing on the recipient of the session. It’s still a wonder to me how well remote sessions work. In this article I will touch on a case story, possible scientific explanations, and my own thoughts on how remote sessions work.
The complete testimonial can be found under www. bodytalkforyou.com/testimonials
The remarkable thing was that she had not mentioned anything about a foot issue on her intake form. Prior to the session, she had received weekly chiropractic adjustments for her foot. When doing this particular session, I had to address an energy block using BodyTalk balancing techniques while holding my attention on the energy flow in
Case Story Early in my practice, I did several BodyTalk sessions for Beth, a woman residing in Portugal at the time. After she e-mailed me an intake form and photo, I did her sessions at an agreed upon time. Personally, I like to have a visual if I have no voice contact. After the session was done, I emailed her a summary of the priority issues that came up to be highlighted and balanced. We worked on a variety of issues, including mental, emotional, and physical aspects of her health. The sessions looked very much like if she were physically present, as I was imagining her lying on the session table in front of me. She later wrote me a testimonial which included the following: …“One very notable thing about my treatment is the session in which Tone-Lise found and corrected a problem with my right foot. I have had trouble with it for years when the bones of the foot get stuck and often it would hurt to walk. I haven’t had trouble with it since!” 14

her right foot. I have since done many remote sessions and consistently find that they work as well as doing in-person sessions. For many holistic practitioners, remote sessions make up the majority of their practice. If you are open to this form of healing, there are several benefits. A remote session makes it easier to fit into a busy lifestyle. It’s accessible no matter where you live. Sessions for young children can be done with more ease. Remote sessions can also be a good option if you are too sick to leave your home, or if you’re recovering from surgery. And it’s an option if things happen while on holiday or business travel. The Connected Universe According to Albert Einstein, our universe is made up of energy. If everything is made up of energy, how do we separate energy over here with energy over there? What if it’s all interconnected? Think about your cell phone and how you can call someone at the other side of the globe, something that seemed impossible only a few decades ago. We are living in a universe where connection across long distances is becoming easy. What if this is not limited to our technology? For a long time, scientists have assumed that there must be a fundamental building block of matter that makes up all the organisms. However, research within the field of quantum physics, the study of sub-atomic particles and how they behave, simply points to smaller and smaller energy units. What if there are no fundamental building blocks of matter that makes up who you are? After years of doing energy medicine, it’s finally hitting me that we’re made up of energy patterns. We are not solid at all, and we are not separate from each other, even though we’re convinced otherwise through our perception. We are more like a multitude of energy units vibrating at different frequencies. And healing really involves harmonizing these frequencies so we can be at our best. Just as each of us has a unique fingerprint, so I believe each of us has a distinct energy field. Perhaps that’s why a trained practitioner can tune into your unique frequency no matter where you are, similar to you tuning into your favorite radio station. Have you ever thought about a loved one and a second later the phone rings and it’s the person you just thought about? How does that happen? Or do you think it’s a co-
