Q People meets ABC News correspondent Steve Osunsami about his 23

Oh yes, SHE DID Sen. Kelly Loeffler donates to two Georgia anti-LGBTQ groups By Matt Hennie U.S. SEN. KELLY LOEFFLER — LOCKED IN a tight runoff election — donated a chunk of her Senate salary to at least two anti-LGBTQ organizations in Georgia. The $7,600 in donations to two anti-LGBTQ groups are among 10 donations of $3,800 each that Loeffler made. Buzzfeed first exposed one of the recipients — Covenant Care Adoptions, a Macon-based organization with counselors in Atlanta. Its “Statement of Faith” disavows LGBTQ marriages, charges that transgender people reject God, and compares homosexuality and bisexuality to bestiality and incest (see excerpt on page 12). A Project Q Atlanta review of Loeffler’s donations uncovered a second anti-LGBTQ organization among the recipients: A Beacon of Hope. The pregnancy care center in Johns Creek rejects LGBTQ marriages and states that sex is only for marriages between one man and one woman. News of the donations comes amid a tight runoff between Loeffler, a Republican, and Democratic challenger Rev. Raphael Warnock on Jan. 5. Warnock strongly backs LGBTQ equality, and his campaign reaches out to LGBTQ voters. When she announced the donations, Loeffler said the anti-LGBTQ groups and other recipients “em-

body the best of Georgia and the best of America.” “This quarter, I’m proud to donate my salary to 10 Georgia-based organizations that are on the frontlines lifting Georgians up and providing life-changing resources and support to so many,” Loeffler said in a press release. “Charitable organizations and nonprofits embody the best of Georgia and the best of America, and they play a critical role in fostering thriving communities across our state,” she added. Loeffler, one of the richest members of Congress, donates portions of her $174,000 annual Senate salary to charity each quarter. 2020 makes 23 years in LGBTQ Atlanta for ABC News reporter Steve Osunsami By Patrick Saunders ATLANTA-BASED ABC NEWS CORRESpondent Steve Osunsami has been “100 percent” out and proud at every job he’s ever had.
“I am Black first, people see me as Black first,” he told Project Q Atlanta. “In some respects, being gay kind of softens some of those perceptions people have when they first meet me, seeing this 6-foot-3 Black gay guy. So I’ve been out every place I’ve gone.” Osunsami became a familiar face to ABC viewers since joining the network’s southern bureau in 1997. He regularly appears on Good Morning America, World News Tonight with David Muir, Nightline and 14 theQatl.com
other broadcasts and online platforms.
But it took a lot of work to get to where he is now — on the cusp of 50, living in Brookhaven with his husband, and reporting on racial justice, politics, natural disasters and more to millions of viewers every week. Osunsami was born in Washington, D.C., to Nigerian immigrants. He came out in college, and his father responded by throwing him out of the house. He experienced the nomadic life of a TV reporter, going from stations in Rockford, Ill., Grand Rapids and Seattle before landing in Atlanta. The reporter lived it up in Midtown like many other young, gay men in the 1990s. The socializing paid off when he ran into Joe Remillard, an artist and Kennesaw State professor. “I met my husband at the Heretic at 2 o’clock in the morning,” he said.
That was in 2005, and they never looked back. The pair created a modern family with Remillard’s two grown kids from his first marriage. Osunsami is especially close with Remillard’s ex-wife, who he said is “like a sister to me.”
Osunsami said. “And you’d run to the TV screen and see someone who looked like you on the TV screen. It just didn’t happen that often, and it meant something.”
‘INCREDIBLY SEGREGATED’ LGBTQ ATLANTA
Being Black in LGBTQ Atlanta isn’t always easy. Osunsami said he faces plenty of racism from white gay men here. “I have experienced in Atlanta more racism from white gay men than I have experienced homophobia from straight Black Atlantans and Georgians,” he said. LGBTQ Atlanta is “incredibly segregated,” Osunsami continued.
RACE, POLITICS AND PANDEMIC
There is no typical workday for Osunsami. His stories could appear on any ABC News show from morning to late night, and the travel can be spontaneous and relentless in non-pandemic times. Osunsami adjusted over the years. “I’ve been doing this for a very long time,” he said. “I’m a two-time cancer survivor. I had prostate cancer, and I had a recurrence. That put a lot of things into perspective. I need to get rest, I need to carve that out for myself.” Osunsami did plenty of election and pandemic coverage this year, but he spent most of 2020 on the police shooting of Rayshard Brooks in Atlanta and the murder of Ahmaud Arbery in Brunswick.
“People need to work harder to diversify the people they hang around with,” he said. “You’ll never understand what someone’s going through unless you have someone close enough to tell you.” Despite challenges and change that’s slow to come, Osunsami put down solid roots in Atlanta and has no plans to leave, he said. “I love this city. I love this region. My home is here. It will always be here,” he said. “I’m very proud to live here and represent the people here, and I don’t take it for granted.” Read the full interview at theQatl.com.
“The protests and racial unrest were way bigger stories, and to me, as a Black gay man, more important,” he said. He added that representation in journalism for LGBTQ and people of color is “hugely important.” He remembers watching TV before cable and before you could pause a live broadcast. “You would see someone Black in the commercial, and we would yell across the house, ‘Hurry come down!’” theQatl.com 15

Still BLOOMING Gay Atlanta florist Foxgloves & Ivy retains its bloom through pandemic By Patrick Saunders THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC CREATED a mixed bag for Atlanta florist Foxgloves & Ivy. Wedding cancelations torpedoed business, but other holidays managed to make up for it. “We haven’t been able to do any weddings since the industry has shut down,” out co-owner Larry Hammack told Project Q Atlanta. “Weddings shifted from spring to fall to next year. Honestly, I don’t have much faith that we’ll be able to do those next spring.” Some 23 years after opening its original location in Virginia Highland, the business now on Moreland Avenue in Little Five Points did shut down in March due to the pandemic. It reopened in May, just in time for one of its best Mother’s Days ever. “Because everyone’s at home,” Hammack said. “We’re not doing gangbusters, but we’re staying steady. I don’t think we’re going to be any worse off than last year.” Still, the pandemic led Hammack to do something he never would have imagined before this strangest of years — banning customers from coming inside the store. theQatl.com 19
FOXGLOVES & IVY continued “If we have anyone that orders and wants to pick up, I make them stay outside,” he said. “They have to wear a mask, and I wear a mask. The only people allowed in the store are me, my designer and my driver.” Foxgloves & Ivy’s deliveries are also contact free. Hammack was spared from laying off workers, and a small loan from the federal Small Business Association helped keep business going during the roughest part of the year. The store counts on a strong holiday season to round out an uncertain year.

In the meantime, Hammack gears up for the long haul as Georgia enters the third spike in coronavirus infections with no expectation of relaxing of safety precautions.
“If we can just keep it at this steady pace, we have the opportunity to do more at Thanksgiving and Christmas because more people are staying home,” Hammack said. “I put the Thanksgiving centerpieces on the website to order, and within 10 minutes I had my first order,” he added.

Love isn’t on a timeline. What’s your hurry? You’ve heard of rebound relationships, and we know serial monogamy is a longstanding queer epidemic. When you’re caught up in it personally, it may be hard to tell the difference between the real deal and fake news. Does it feel like a rush job? Do you need to get married again, or want to be with this woman forever? Would it hurt to continue dating to find out? Therein lies your answer.

I thought I was satisfied, but now I’m pretty sure that everybody is having more sex than me. Other gay guys are getting all kinds of laid, and here I sit with my occasional booty call and random hookup. Dear Always Greener: The only thing worrying gets you is frustrated. Forget assumptions about, and braggadocio from, other people. Go back to your initial statement: You were satisfied. Was worrying somehow more appealing than that?
