The mere thought of their arrival makes you want to bolt.

Your conversations with the dog are longer than the ones with them.

They start buying their own drinks without asking if you want one.

They stop texting you back.

They’re too busy with work to hang, but not too busy to stop at the bar with friends.

Friends stop inviting you out as a couple, because they’d prefer to chew glass than be around you together. They suggest seeing other people, and oh yeah hey by the way, they already have a head start. They stop leaving their stuff at your place.

You feel lonely even when they are there. theQatl.com 9

hate crime in 2019, which was motivated by the victim’s religion. The city reported 10 hate crimes in 2018. Several agencies in Georgia — including Atlanta’s — failed to report several hate crimes to the FBI in 2018, discovering the missing ones only after questions from Project Q Atlanta.

Hate crimes spike in Georgia as more agencies join reporting By Patrick Saunders

LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN Georgia reported nine hate crimes involving anti-LGBTQ bias in 2019 as the number of overall hate crimes in the state more than doubled. There were 102 hate crimes reported in Georgia in 2019, according to the FBI’s Hate Crime Statistics Report released in November. That’s a 237 percent increase from the 43 hate crimes reported in 2018. The increase comes as six times as many agencies reported hate crimes compared to the year before. Even so, the number of Georgia agencies reporting hate crimes to the FBI remains below the national average. Some 77 of the 102 reported hate crimes — or 75 percent — were motivated by the victim’s race, ethnicity or ancestry. Nine of the crimes – about nine percent — were motivated by the victim’s religion. Four of the crimes — or four percent — were motivated by the victim’s disability. Three of the crimes — or three percent — were motivated by the victim’s gender. The remaining nine incidents –— about nine percent — were motivated by anti-LGBTQ bias, the same number of crimes reported in 2018. The hate crimes involving anti-LGBTQ bias took place in the cities of Brookhaven, Dunwoody, Glennville and Omega, and in the counties of Cobb, Coweta, Alexa Bryant, Georgia Douglas and Newton. NEW LAW INCLUDES REPORTING Some 50 agencies in Georgia reported hate crimes to the FBI in 2019, a nearly six-fold increase over the nine agencies that reported them in 2018. Some 13.9 percent of the roughly 15,600 law enforcement agencies in the U.S. reported hate crimes to the FBI in 2019, according to the report. Only about 10 percent of Georgia’s nearly 500 agencies reported hate crimes to the FBI. The Georgia legislature passed an LGBTQ-inclusive hate crimes law in June. The legislation enhances penalties for crimes that target a victim based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender, and mental or physical disability. It also calls for law enforcement agencies to track hate crimes and report them to the GBI. Municipalities throughout metro Atlanta have also recently adopted hate crime measures mandating the reporting of incidents to the GBI or FBI. They include Sandy Springs, Johns Creek, Doraville and Fulton County. Other cities — including Dunwoody, Savannah and Statesboro — required hate crime tracking and reporting in their LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances. theQatl.com 11

LGBTQ pundits discuss what the U.S. Senate runoffs mean for equality WITH JUST DAYS REMAINING IN TWO critical runoffs for the U.S. Senate in Georgia, an unprecedented effort unfolded to turn out LGBTQ and progressive voters for the two candidates embracing equality issues. On Dec. 30, Q Conversations talked with advocates on the front lines about Georgia Equality’s $1.2 million plan to mobilize 650,000 voters, Fair Fight’s efforts to encourage LGBTQ voter participation, why the races were so important for equality issues, and the large number of LGBTQ people involved in the campaigns of Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. The discussion also included how to move for12 theQatl.com

ward after a tumultuous election cycle. The final day of voting in the Senate runoffs was Jan. 5. The panel included Andre Fields, the political director for Fair Fight, a a voting rights-based organization that promotes free and fair elections. Before that, the queer organizer served as special assistant on the Stacey Abrams for Governor campaign, worked on legislative and policy issues for the Georgia House Democratic Caucus and spent time organizing in Louisiana and New York. Also joining host Project Q Founder Matt Hennie were return guests to Q Conversations, Georgia Equality Executive Director Jeff Graham and state Sen-elect Kim Jackson. Elias Duncan, digital director for Jon Ossoff’s U.S. Senate campaign

#teamos  Jon Ossoff tapped talents of diverse set of LGBTQ staffers By Mike Fleming NINE OF THE LGBTQ STAFFERS ON THE campaign to elect Democrat Jon Ossoff talked about what made their candidate the right man for the job. “Jon is an incredibly kind boss, a compassionate leader and an ally who cares deeply about understanding and fighting for LGBTQ issues,” said Elias Duncan, digital director for the Ossoff campaign. Ossoff pledged “unwavering” LGBTQ support 14 theQatl.com

early in the campaign, and the Human Rights Campaign endorsed him in July.

The stakes were rarely higher for LGBTQ residents to help turn Georgia blue in both races, Duncan asserted. “It means having leadership in Georgia and in the Senate that will defend and expand the rights of LGBTQ Americans,” Duncan said. “Many LGBTQ people across Georgia and America, especially LGBTQ people of color, still face discrimination in employment, housing, heath care and policing, and it’s important to have leaders that’ll call it out and do something about it.” Shayna O’Reilly, the Ossoff campaign’s deputy operations director for community mobilization,

agreed. She said that being part of inclusive campaigns was as personal as it was political for her. “As a queer black woman, I’ve found my experience working on campaigns to be very affirming,” O’Reilly said. “I’ve been very lucky to work for candidates and organizations that not only care about the lived experiences and struggles of various demographic communities, but make them central to their policy positions and campaign rhetoric.” “Feeling not only seen by my employer, but also encouraged to voice my specific perspectives, has been extremely fulfilling,” she added.

EQUALITY RISING The chance to flip the Senate for the Democrats meant hope for the Equality Act. The measure, which would add LGBTQ protections to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, passed the House last year but failed to gain traction in the Senate.

soff

Duncan pointed to Ossoff ’s commitment to the measure, and Ossoff himself included the Equality Act on his list of priorities. That’s exactly the kind of personal allegiance that drew O’Reilly to the campaign, she said. “The team has been so welcoming, kind and passionate, and I really believe that stems from our candidate’s character,” O’Reilly said. “Jon Ossoff is on a mission to fight for the welfare and prosperity of everyone, not just the wealthiest and most privileged, and I’m so proud to be doing what I can to help.” Driving voter participation was expected to play a definitive part in the election result. Overseeing digital fundraising, organizing and content programming, 25-year-old Duncan saw the role of younger voters as key. At 24, O’Reilly tracked the campaign’s hiring, employees and internal processes. She also managed a team of administrators to support community mobilizers.

Duncan and O’Reilly were just two of nine LGBTQ Ossoff team members who jumped at the chance to tout their candidate. We asked each of them about working for the campaign. Read their responses at theQatl.com. theQatl.com 15

TY HERNDON continued

By Matt Hennie OUT COUNTRY MUSIC SINGER TY HERNDON — who has headlined Atlanta Pride and experienced the fineries of Swinging Richards — returns to Atlanta for a live performance on Jan. 9. But rest assured: the self-described “clean freak” makes sure coronavirus protocols are followed. “I’m very strong-willed. That’s just who I am. But I have really specific rules to, number one, keep the people safe,” Herndon said in a new episode of Podcast Q. “If you’re going to come to the show, you’ve got to play by my rules. Period,” he added. The Grammy-nominated singer appears with James David Carter on Jan. 9 at Ponko Chicken Decatur. Herndon said to expect socially-distanced tables, masks, open windows and doors (weather permitting), no meet-and-greet and plenty of good music. “I’ve got family and an 80-year-old mother, so I’m just very aware. I think that’s what we’ve all become. And if somebody doesn’t respect that, it can get me upset. If you don’t respect it for yourself, respect it for other people,” he said. Herndon’s latest stop in Atlanta comes just six years after the now 58-year-old became the first 20 theQatl.com

male country star to come out as gay. He once struggled to reconcile his faith with being gay, but once he stopped letting the opinions of others stand in the way of his connection to God, that opened the pathway to his coming out, Herndon said. “It’s been magical, quite honestly. It’s been not looking over my shoulder — looking straight ahead and being focused on music, helping others and my foundation. Just putting good things out on the planet. And actually, for the first time in my life, these six years have been — my bones are very authentic. They cohabitate with my skin very well,” he said. During the Podcast Q interview, Herndon also discussed visiting Swinging Richards before coming out, working with Kristin Chenoweth and his upcoming new album and biography. “I’ve been to Swinging Richards one time and it was with Leslie Jordan on, I think it was his 50th birthday. It was crazy. I was not out at that time. I was highly anticipating paparazzi to come out from behind a swinging somebody,” Herndon said. Q Advice

Sex at

WORK

The tangled web of sex with co-workers

Q

Things got a little out of hand at our office holiday party. Next thing you know, I’m sucking the chrome off this “straight” coworker’s trailer hitch. He texted me that weekend, and I met him to do it again. Come Monday, I tried to let him know it’s cool and he can get it whenever he wants, but he acted like nothing happened. When cornered, he asked me to respect his privacy and leave him alone. I think he’s gay, obviously, but I’m not sure how to proceed. Dear Thirsty: There’s nothing obvious about his sexual orientation, but you have more dilemmas than whether he’s gay, bisexual, questioning or just into good blowjobs. Welcome to the obstacle course of hurdles and hoops that is sex with a co-worker. The distraction during work will occupy both of you for a while, but you aren’t the first or last to deal with it. He shut you down, so the next move, if any, is his. Step away from the penis, and find a new trailer hitch to polish. Maybe one who doesn’t work with you.

Q

I’m a doctor in a local clinic. My personal and professional ethics make it pretty easy to avoid relatively regular advances from patients,

30 theQatl.com

but flirting with this new, hot, sexy fellow doctor is tempting. The nurses and office staff are giggling, but I can’t help myself. He really has it going on, and the flirting is a real rush. Is it acceptable to go for it, or am I crossing a line? Dear Sup Doc: We can earn degrees, but it’s tougher to educate our libidos. Consider yourself back in school, and this is the principal’s office. Sure, a gay Grey’s Anatomy fantasy in the janitor’s closet is hot. But being fodder for gossip is especially troublesome in an office where patients and staff depend on your public image and having your brain on task. This kind of kid stuff not only shows your ass, but is telling. Two doctors really interested in each other could grow up and go out for drinks, but something else is up if you’re conducting your foreplay with an audience.

Q

I’m 22, and I started sleeping with an older coworker when I was 19. I quit so we could date in the open, but now they just want a physical relationship and insist it’s still not a good idea to let anyone know we’re together. Dear Player 1:

This may be tough to hear. They are relationship material for you, but you are a plaything for them. While you fretted the drama of hiding, they feasted on it. For people like this, forbidden sex is more interesting than having everything above board. If you can’t get on the same page, turn to your next chapter.
