MIKE FLEMING EDITOR & PUBLISHER

Love is always a good a place to start anything, and with Valentine’s Day looming, it’s the foundation upon which we build this, our annual Q Love Issue. Meet six queer Atlanta couples complementing each other in contributing photographer Jon Dean’s latest photo essay. Get their advice with their mugs, and follow suit in this week’s 10 Queer Things listicle, where we list ways to be a better sweetheart.

Not to be outdone, Vince Shifflett is all up in his feelings about monogamy in Q Voices. He simultaneously questions whether it’s possible to do it without lying, whether it’s impossible to stick to it at all, and whether it even matters weighing what’s going on in his heart against what’s going on in his pants. Ain’t love grand? Well, the Big Love in our book goes beyond the heart, and Charles Stephens shows it for a fallen black gay predecessor in this week’s Q&A. The late, great Tony Daniels gets his due in our feature as Auburn Avenue Research Library prepares to induct his papers into their permanent archives. Get to know the man before the launch event, titled Architect of Black Gay Atlanta. Don’t look now, but your liberal guilt is showing. At least, some of us are so caught up in shaming ourselves and each other in a contest over who's more woke, we may be doing the equality movement more harm than good. The Q advice column meets two well-meaning queers in need of a reality check. Liberalism? Check. Loyalty, tick. Legacy? Yep. Love for you and yours? Check, check, check, check check. All that’s left are the smiles, and Q Shots has those in abundance, while the Queer Agenda calendar has your future smiles waiting to be claimed. Flip the page to keep them coming, and find new content daily on our homesite, Project Q Atlanta at theQatl.com. Until next time, hit me up if you need me via mike@theQatl.com. theQatl.com

Is it possible to be in love with more than one person at a time? Or is monogamy hypocrisy? THE DIVORCE RATE IN THE U.S. IS MORE THAN 50%, and that doesn’t even include those who are separated but not formally divorced.

The lack of intimate physical connection with another being would seem rather boring to me.

Sex is not love. Sex can be an expression of love, but the

Polyamory is defined as having multiple loving, romantic relationships at the same time with the knowledge and

Unconditional love doesn’t put limitations on another person. It just loves regardless.

If monogamy works for you, awesome. If not, perhaps it’s

Cannon said that through Miss Lawrence’s work on Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ LGBTQ Advisory Board, he “continues to show his dedication to making his home city and home state better places for all.”

Cannon cited Miss Lawrence’s role as Miss Bruce on the Fox series Star, as well as his appearances on Empire, Real Housewives of Atlanta and Fashion Queens. to do with the contributions of black LGBTQ folk. And [the

ATLANTA POET AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZER TONY Daniels died almost 20 years ago, but his spirit lives on in a number of local black gay men today. Charles Stephens, founder and executive director of Atlanta’s Counter Narrative Project (photo), talked with Q about Daniels’ impact and the Feb. 7 event at the Auburn Avenue Research Library set to honor his legacy titled Architect of the Black Gay Mecca. What is the Counter Narrative Project? The Counter Narrative Project was founded in 2014 as a love letter to black gay men such as Tony Daniels and his contemporaries. These courageous, brilliant and daring black gay men saved my life, saved so many of our lives, through their writings, their artistry and their activism. I wanted to build not just an organization, but an institution, that was grounded in that legacy and that history.

of now, is that when I came into the community, Atlanta was still very much grieving. So many black gay men of that gen-

eration died, and Atlanta has failed to honor them. My belief is that the creative energy that fuels this city has everything

Architect of the Black Gay Mecca event] will hopefully be the first of many programs to honor that spirit.

Additionally, so much of HIV and LGBTQ movement history

is whitewashed. There are figures like Tony Daniels that were instrumental in advancing HIV and LGBTQ justice in the South that have been completely ignored. This event corrects that. What’s the most important lesson you learned from reading Daniels’ work?

I’ve always occupied a unique position in the

HIV and LGBTQ rights movement, because I am first and foremost a cultural worker. I believe in the power of culture and story-

telling to advance social change and social

justice. I believe in the importance of media

and narratives to not only change hearts and minds, but to also shift policy. And in Tony Tony Daniels

What is Tony Daniels' legacy? Tony Daniels was a black gay man living with HIV who dared to tell the truth about his life and his experience. He also dared to challenge racism, sexism, homophobia and HIV stigma through his writings and organizing work. His writings, in particular, sought to elevate the dignity and humanity of black gay men, at a time when so many of us were invisible. He was also an early force in providing an intersectional framework for how we think about HIV. Unfortunately, I never met Tony Daniels. I entered community and movement work in January 1999, when I attended my first My Brothers Keeper meeting, at the Atlanta Lambda Center. Tony had died the previous spring in a car accident.

Daniels, I see an example of how to do that, how to be all the parts of myself. What can people expect at the event? In so many ways, I hope this event is not only about celebrat-

ing Tony as an incredible individual, but it also creates a space

for community healing and restoration. My hope is that people

will experience joy from the program. Anyone who attends will

certainly learn quite a bit about Tony Daniels, his life and legacy, and his contributions to Atlanta’s black LGBTQ communi-

ty and movement. I’m very excited that Tony’s brother, Freddy, will be present to share stories about him.

Tony Daniels: Architect of the Black Gay Mecca takes place Feb.

7 from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Auburn Avenue Research Library. RSVP for the free event on eventbrite.com.

Q

THEQ?! Liberal

GUILT

Is the queer Left ‘shoulding’ each other into oblivion?

Q

My partner and I adopted a newborn over the holidays, and I am already mortified over a situation that I fear I created.

Moments after a black colleague told me that babies love him, my two-month old broke into screams and tears when he leaned over her crib. It’s the first time she’s seen a black person, and even though I made an excuse about her being tired, the truth couldn’t have been more obvious that she was afraid of his dark skin. I’m even more worried because my baby’s birth parents are Asian. As white mothers, I fear we’ve made a mistake by not exposing her to more folx of color before now. How should I follow up with the colleague, and what should I do about my racist baby? Dear White People: You created a situation alright, but not the one you think. Too many caucasian queers are so focused on intersectionality in society that we forget to get our own house in order. Your discomfort with people of color and issues of race sends chills up my spine, and I wasn’t even there. While it is outdated to ask you to be “color blind,” it’s also wrong to be so “color aware” that you come off as awkwardly as any racist would in that situation. A two-month old cried when a stranger stuck his head in her crib. It is a total non-event — except for your reaction. At that age, everyone she sees brings new stimuli. Apart from lining up people of different races to file past her crib on a daily basis, you’ve exposed her to various people as they cross your path over the last couple of months. Now, if you anticipate that having your infant around only white people is going to be an actual problem rather than an invented one, please do diversify your circles. It might do you as much (or more) good as your daughter. You’re not even a little bit ready to address this with your colleague. He understands it better than you do, and catching you up is not his job. Let this one go, and concentrate on staying out of your own way. 38

Q

There is this guy in my friend group who won’t let anyone say anything bad — ever. I get it when others are catty behind people’s backs. This is a whole other level.

One friend was talking about how his ex-boyfriend hurt him. This guy interrupted to say, “but we don’t talk bad about our exes.”

When I was asked my opinion on a local queer play that was so bad it sent people bailing at intermission, this person said, “but we keep our opinions to ourselves and support all queer arts.” When confronted, he says that bullying suffered by disenfranchised people leaves negativity unacceptable in all forms. I don’t even know where to begin. Dear Peppy Patty:

Teaching other people lessons has become a hallmark of liberal existence. Not only is it presumptuous, it’s often pretentious to engage in a sanctimonious game of Who’s Most Politically Correct? What’s worse, such infighting and zero tolerance divides us against our enemies. Your acquaintance is hurting over discrimination and inequality, but passing judgments about your behavior misdirects his emotions. Acting like negativity isn’t there doesn’t make it go away, and it’s rude to shut people down.

Even when we understand him, don’t let his issues become your problem. Conflict avoidance on his part does not create “should” on your part. Grownups get to pick their battles and can choose whether to engage each other about them. When he pulls these disruptive tactics, have some statements prepared. “I disagree, and as I was saying…,” or “You’ll get your turn,” or “Let me finish.” Give zero more fucks about his judgments, and give him an earful if he persists. The Q is for entertainment purposes and not professional counseling. Send your burning Qs to mike@theqatl.com. ILLUSTRATION BY BRAD GIBSON
