The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC), originally incorporated in 1896 as the Harlem Board of Trade, is celebrating over 12 decades of service to Upper Manhattan and the greater New York region. In spite of periodic intervals of economic and social challenges, GHCC has continually served as an anchor for regional, city-wide and community stability and progress. We remain steadfast as we now enjoy times of greater prosperity. GHCC has worked diligently to focus on Harlem’s Second Renaissance and the revitalization of Upper Manhattan by: • • •

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT The Chamber annually spearheads a year round series of economic development business breakfasts, seminars, forums and conferences. We also partner with major Upper Manhattan, citywide, regional, national and international businesses and professionals to host various initiatives that focus on key topics including: • Traditional and non-traditional lending • Technology (S.T.E.A.M.) • MWBE initiatives • Health services and related initiatives • Tourism related initiatives • Community Services • E-marketing The annual NY City Economic Development Day (EDD) Conference, co-hosted by Columbia University in partnership with The City of New York, New York State and Federal agencies, exemplifies the totality of the Chamber’s year round commitment to the New York Business community. Each year, EDD highlights topical subjects of interest that include presentations by public and/or private developers of new projects in the tri-state region. It also promotes national and international business opportunities for local businesses and professionals. Participants receive valuable information from the conferences, workshops, business expos, loan pavilions, and other noteworthy exchanges. On behalf of our Board of Directors, The GHCC International Relations Committee has undertaken partnerships with China, Jamaica, Barbados, Japan, Cuba, Martinique, Brazil, South Africa, England, Panama, Greece, Senegal, Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands and many other nations, to promote and encourage tourism, product awareness, “business-to-business” collaborations, familiarization trips, and international student exchanges.

GHCC also actively supports and co-sponsors the Carib News annual Multinational Business Conference which convenes each November in a Caribbean or Latin American nation. We also partner with the East Mediterranean Business Culture Alliance and the American Foundation of the University of the West Indies to foster international business to business opportunities.
WEST 135TH STREET DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE GHCC in concert with Greater Harlem Housing Development Corporation, Silicon Harlem, The City College of New York, Harlem Arts Alliance, Harlem Community Development Corporation, and Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone will undertake the revitalization of the 135th Street Corridor from Convent Avenue at its west boundary to Fifth Avenue at its east boundary - beginning in the 3rd quarter of 2018, for a five year period. The project’s focus will be to preserve and promote the culture and history of the diverse and historic entities that align the corridor and to take advantage of the wide range of resources and assets that currently exist. Over the past two decades, major investments have been made to the 135th Street corridor's housing, small business, architectural, and cultural development. As the attraction to the 135th Street area has continued to grow, the assets are now prime for enhancement for the next generation of investment. GHCC will focus its attention on leveraging the business, cultural, educational, housing, technological, recreational, transportation and historical aspects of the corridor. The objectives of the West 135th Street Development Initiative are to: • Retain and increase foot traffic from residents, students, customers, and tourists • Infuse more dollars into local businesses and cultural institutions • Improve the infrastructure • Create a technology hub to measurably improve digital literacy for all • Build more MWBE’s • Train Harlemites for employment in the ever growing tourism related service industries • Strengthen our commitment to supporting education on all levels.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT The Chamber has been a leader in accomplishing key community development initiatives that have helped to positively change the landscape of Harlem. To achieve this goal, GHCC partners and collaborates with city, state and federal agencies, financial institutions, educational institutions, cultural entities and private developers.
GREATER HARLEM HOUSING DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION & STRIVERS GARDENS The Strivers Center Development Project anchors the heart of the Strivers Arts & Cultural District. This urban renewal undertaking was created by Greater Harlem Housing Development Corporation (GHHDC) in concert with the Office of the Mayor, the Manhattan Borough President, Manhattan Community Board #10, Harlem Community Development Corp., NYC Planning Commission, NY City Economic Development Corporation, Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone and NYC Department of Parks & Recreation. Extending from West 130th Street to West 141st Street from Fifth Avenue to St. Nicholas Avenue, the Strivers Center Development Project features: • Restaurants • Small businesses • Boutiques • Professional service providers • Libraries • Banks • Religious institutions • Housing options—affordable apartments, • Art galleries co-ops, condominiums, and townhouses — and includes the Chamber’s award • Recreational facilities winning “Strivers Gardens” • Cultural venues The Chamber is the Sponsor and Co-Developer of Strivers Gardens, a mixed use complex with 170 residential condominiums featuring underground parking and a recreational center. The complex also houses retail and office space for Chase Bank, Duane Reade, Harlem Children’s Zone and Subway restaurant. Greater Harlem Housing Development Corporation (GHHDC), The Chamber’s affordable housing entity, offers 117 units of affordable housing ranging from studios to 3 bedrooms, as well as, 12 retail and commercial spaces including major cultural service organizations and MCU Financial. Working with Harlem Arts Alliance (HAA), Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ), Harlem Community Development Corporation (HCDC), and Manhattan Community Board #10—specific attention is given to developing, supporting and preserving much needed affordable housing units for our community. TECHNOLOGY Technology has changed practically every aspect of our lives. For the foreseeable future, the advent of the digital age will be a catalyst to bringing our societies together – or, if not properly expanded, it may well divide us. Harlem has become a leader in closing the digital divide and encouraging the former teaching of S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) to the broader concept of S.T.E.A.M. “S.T.E.A.M. is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics to serve as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!” The Chamber and Silicon Harlem in partnership with Harlem Community Development Corporation, The City College of New York and Columbia University, lead a year round S.T.E.A.M. initiative supported by City University of New York and The State University of New York. We have created a series of annual events designed to demystify technology and close the “digital divide” for our seniors and encourage our children and youth to actively participate in the learning experience. The tangible benefits of these programs allow participants to successfully navigate the digital age for their professional and personal benefit. Silicon Harlem and the Chamber offer the community: • Monthly Silicon Harlem technology “meet-ups” and regularly scheduled workshops to bring the latest information and experts in the field together with the business community. • Annual Small Business Technology Conferences highlighting trends in the industry, that reward and recognize industry leaders who advocate on behalf of small businesses. • The NY City Economic Development Day Technology Conference—featuring discussions on cyber security, digital development and inclusion for small businesses, professional service providers, and community-based service organizations. • Youth Education & Career Conference 2.0--for students and young adults ages 13 to 22 focused on 21st century careers. The conference features a “Hackathon” panel discussion and “app concept” competitions. • “Demystifying Technology” Conferences for New York City Senior Citizens. • NY City Children’s Festival back to school “Tech Games”-- designed to develop interest for children at earlier ages, stimulate their minds, increase tech proficiency, and make S.T.E.A.M. fun and challenging.
ARTS & CULTURE AR TS & C U LT U R E The Chamber places the artistic and cultural development of our communities among its highest priorities. The GHCC Arts and Culture Committee has formed a strong partnership with the Harlem Arts Alliance (HAA), which serves as the benchmark for regional arts service organizations. This important collaboration has brought about the annual creation and presentation of multiple events that highlight the enormous contributions being made by arts and cultural organizations, artists and related professionals to improve the quality of life in our service area and beyond. During Black Music Month (June) the GHCC Arts and Culture Committee partners with a number of major New York based music and cultural organizations to promote the vast array of music sounds that generate from the African Diaspora. GHCC Health Committee’s goal is to provide the residents, families, students, workers and businesses located in Upper Manhattan with information and resources to live healthier, happier and more productive lives. We recognize the positive economic impact that a healthy customer base, employees and managers have on local businesses.

“Healthy Eating & Healthy Living” is a year-round endeavor of the GHCC Health Committee. This initiative was created in partnership with the Chamber’s member hospitals, health plans, HMOs, health professionals, educational institutions, media partners, food service providers, recreational facilities, senior centers, elected officials, government agencies, and the Office of the Mayor of the City of New York.
Included among its many accomplishments, the GHCC Health Committee: • Created the National Urban Health Conference, held annually in the spring • Co-sponsors the Summer Harlem Health Village with Harlem Hospital Center • Launched International Wellness Week in conjunction with The New York Academy of Medicine and the World Health Organization. EDUCATION The Chamber aggressively maintains a focused commitment to supporting education on all levels including daycare, public and private schools, technical programs, undergraduate and postgraduate colleges and universities, and trade schools. The City College of New York
Over the decades, GHCC and our supporting members have awarded in excess of six million dollars in scholarships and internships to students attending trade schools, colleges and universities locally, nationally and internationally with a focus on CUNY and SUNY institutions and Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU). We have also provided support grants to scores of community based educational and training programs. In addition, we annually identify and salute outstanding teachers and educators at selected events and activities. Each summer during HARLEM WEEK, we produce the annual Higher Education Fair and Expo to promote and encourage educational opportunities. The Expo is attended by thousands of students, parents, and educators. HARLEM WEEK also features the 2-Day NY City Children’s Festival, which provides educational activities focused on technology, reading, creative writing and “back to school” preparation. The Chamber is a proud partner of a coalition of corporate and community based organizations that, each year, provide support to the University of the West Indies.

TOURISM Tourism continues to be an ever growing major component of the engine that drives economic development, jobs, and business growth in the greater Upper Manhattan area. KEY HARLEM WEEK ACTIVITIES HARLEM WEEK and the Chamber join forces every year to offer an array of opportunities for members, sponsors, residents of Harlem and New York, regional visitors and tourists to experience multiple activities highlighting the rich cultural and economic vitality of our historic communities. The invitational HARLEM WEEK opening and closing receptions are annually co-hosted at various historic public and private institutions such as Gracie Mansion, the NY Philharmonic, Apollo Theater, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Aaron Davis Hall, The Russian Tea Room, Harlem Hospital Center, Lincoln Center, Columbia University and others. These receptions include live performances by Broadway theater companies; all-star bands playing great live music; the presentation of special congressional, gubernatorial, mayoral and other elected office proclamations, Chamber college scholarships, educational grants, and recognition of selected outstanding New York City community service providers and business honorees.
During HARLEM WEEK, The Chamber produces NYC Economic Development Day in partnership with Columbia University. The day includes the morning Indoor Business Expo, Business and Health Summits, Outdoor Farmers Market, the Basil Paterson Business Awards Luncheon, and an afternoon Technology Summit. In addition to attracting elected officials, senior representatives from government, civic and business organizations, NYC Economic Development Day draws thousands of local and regional attendees. The day also receives extensive media coverage including: print, radio, television, cable and social media. “A Great Day in Harlem� takes place on the last Sunday in July. It is the first public event of HARLEM WEEK. Over 45,000 attendees gather at U.S. Grant National Memorial Park for a day of family activities including performances by local art institutions. The day also includes a regional gospel concert hosted by WBLSFM/WLIB-AM and the NY Amsterdam News.

This event occurs the second week of August. “Summer in the City” — HARLEM WEEK’s second largest event attracts tens of thousands of attendees to West 135th Street for a wide variety of events for the entire family. Activities for the day include the first day of the NY City Children’s Festival, the Higher Education Fair & Expo, day one of the UpMarket Pavilion, the Main Stage of entertainment featuring local, national and international performing artists, the International Vendor Village, and the HARLEM WEEK/IMAGENATION Outdoor Festival.

HARLEM DAY takes place annually on the third Sunday in August and culminates the major outdoor events of HARLEM WEEK. It attracts over 100,000 attendees and includes four stages of music and entertainment, “Back to School” children’s fashion shows, technology programs, the Children’s Festival and Up Market retail goods and products.

NEW YORK CITY MARATHON The “HARLEM MILES” of the New York City MARATHON is a New York Road Runners initiative in concert with the Chamber and co-sponsored by Harlem Arts Alliance, WBLS-FM, WLIB-AM, WBGO.FM, Hot97-FM, WHCR.FM, NY Daily News, NY Amsterdam News and Harlem News Group. It occurs each year on NY City Marathon Day, which is the first Sunday in November. “HARLEM MILES” has become “the place to be” on Marathon Sunday. New Yorkers, regional, national and international visitors are invited to come out and join the marathoners and their guests. GHCC proudly hosts the “HARLEM MILES” segment of the NYC Marathon. This 42-block segment extends from 138th Street and Fifth Avenue to 96th Street and Fifth Avenue and promotes our “Healthy Eating & Healthy Living” initiative to tens of thousands. The extraordinary musical “Sounds of Harlem” are captured along the “HARLEM MILES” Marathon route at five stages: 5th Avenue at 135th Street; 125th Street; 121st Street; 117th Street; and 110th Street. The stages feature a variety of entertainers, musicians, dancers and DJ’s offering jazz, gospel, R&B, calypso, Latin, reggae, blues, dance, rock and hip hop. The live music is thoroughly enjoyed by tens of thousands of spectators who line the “HARLEM MILES” route, as well as 50,000+ runners who race the course. We also present an annual seven day tribute to the Marathon known as “Marathon Week in Harlem” which extends from the last Monday of October through the first Sunday of November. All New Yorkers and regional, national and international visitors are invited to “DISCOVER OUR HARLEM.” Marathon Week features unique experiences including specialty shopping, dining at distinctive international Harlem restaurants, open houses at historic cultural and religious institutions, and opportunities to encounter the musical “Sounds of Harlem” throughout the week at uptown restaurants, nightclubs and theatres.

PUBLIC SAFETY The Chamber has established a comprehensive Public Safety initiative to support our mission to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. Partnering with leaders in the fields of law enforcement, education, health, government and community development, we focus on integrating public safety awareness in all of our activities. We maintain strong relationships with local law enforcement, the Office of the New York City Police Commissioner and New York State Police. This allows for an ongoing dialogue and opportunity to advocate directly on matters most important to our constituents. Members of the GHCC Board of Directors play a leadership role with several initiatives to keep this critical issue at the forefront. These endeavors include:
• Annual National Night Out - The first Tuesday evening in August, this national community-building campaign, in partnership with local law enforcement, promotes police and community camaraderie, increases communication and positive interactions, and provides access to information relevant to the entire family.
• All Lives Matter - An anti-violence campaign which includes educational forums, action meetings with elected officials, civic leaders and law enforcement. We also recognize leaders who are active in the fight against gun violence.
• Safe Streets Redesign - This effort includes timed crosswalks, wider pedestrian crosswalks, and traffic islands, designated turning lanes, and better street lighting.
• Youth Programs - Supporting the NYPD Cadets and Explorers, IMPACT Repertory Theatre, The Feathermen, Our Children’s Foundation and other programs that provide leadership and business training to youth and young adults.
• Gun Violence – The Chamber and collaborating partners including civic, humanitarian and law enforcement organizations are committed to addressing the unprecedented levels of gun violence through symposiums and informational materials distributed throughout the community. • Cyber Safety – The Chamber, in partnership with the Office of Manhattan County District Attorney Cy Vance, is addressing the increasing concerns around cyber security and safety throughout our community. We are actively exploring educating and advising on which techniques are most effective.
