Where does a bicycle start? Is it the frame? Is it the groupset? Is it the wheelset? Or is it perhaps more about the experience? The sound of wind in your ears? A spark of an idea that catches your imagination and fuels your drive to create? For Pro-Lite, the beginning was in a dingy basement in the countryside in the South of Manchester, where riding became racing, a few tools on a bench became a workshop and dreams became reality. Few parts of the bicycle are as personal as the wheel, with personal preferences dictating choices of spoke shape, profile, thickness, lacing patterns, tension, pull type, nipple material, bearing materials, types of grease, shapes of skewer levers… just the tip of the iceberg. And all of this has been carefully considered, ridden, tweaked, ridden more, fine tuned, ridden more, documented, ridden more and more and more. For decades… and there’s still new things being learned all the time. And as time rolls along, it’s not so much where it begins, or even where it ends, but enjoying the journey every second along the way.

Full Carbon Wheel Chair Racing Disc Padova WCR

Pro-Lite has been involved with wheelchair racing at the world-class level since the Padova was first released with its ground-breaking proprietary internal structure and while other companies lose interest in the niche market, we continue to search for new opportunities to support this inspiring collective of indomitable athletes. But while we ride our bikes hard and long, and put every ounce of pure Pro-Lite quality into the Padova in any configuration, we aren’t world-class wheelchair racing athletes. So we got a few words together from Michael Mills, a man who is just seconds away from his goal of setting a new world record. Michael races for Team Shepherd, a team that regularly places athletes in the Paralympics and assists Michael as he inches ever closer to his dream. Trackside maintenance and race-specific tuning are an important part of this as well and having spent our fair share of time down at the track, we understand that every second before a race should be spent on preparing for the challenge ahead â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not juggling allen keys, spanners and chainbreaks. With a couple of common tools, the 2-in-1 hub can be switched from a standard road cassette with pawl ratcheting to a fixed gear track hub with either the supplied 16 tooth sprocket or your own preference secured with a locking ring.

Straight Pull Wheelsets

Straight Pull. Some people love it, some people hate it. Many donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand it. The Benefits: A straight spoke is less susceptible to snapping at the vulnerable J-bend. This allows a higher spoke tension, giving superior power transfer. A straight spoke is aligned with the direction where it is strongest, taking greatest advantage of its natural strengths. The Disadvantages: Many straight pull wheelsets have the nipple at the hub, giving straight pull wheels the reputation of having one of the most time consuming repairs possible â&#x20AC;&#x201C; likely dashing all hope of a win. Straight Pull spokes often demand stronger, heavier hubs. Also, with 4.5mm oversized spokes, the risk of breaking a spoke is far less than on a conventional spoked wheel. The asymmetrical hub is more than it might appear though, directly addressing the imbalance inherent in every dished wheel.
