The South African Institute of Materials Handling (SAIMH) is a Non-Profit organisation set up with an objective to encourage the transfer of knowledge associated within the fields of Bulk Materials Handling (conveyors, stacker, reclaimers, tipplers, train loading systems, etc.) through a combination of seminars and networking sessions. The SAIMH is made up of professional engineers, each practising their trade in a variety of organisations who volunteer their time to execute the SAIMH’s objective. CHUTE DESIGN AND MODELLING Chutes are crucial components in most bulk material handling systems but their importance is often underestimated. The correct design of chutes is essential in order to avoid costly process interruptions due to blockages or mechanical failure.

Course objectives This three day course, presented by leading Australian and South African practitioners in chute design, will provide detailed methodologies for the calculation of bulk materials trajectories, velocities and pressures that develop with material impact and flow within bulk transfer chute arrangements. An understanding of internal angles of friction and how chute angles are determined and how they are applied to the chute design

will be presented. Understand how to interpret a “comprehensive bulk solids report� and apply the various results to the equipment design. The explanation and use of the chute angle adhesion tester, and its application in design, will be discussed. This course has been accredited by ECSA for 3 CPD credits for attendance. This course is endorsed by the Conveyor Manufacturers Association (CMA) and the South African Institute of Materials Handling (SAIMH). Attendance will entitle the delegate to register with the CMA to write an assignment and an examination, at an additional cost to be advised by the CMA. A CMA Certificate of competency is issued to delegates who pass both the assignment and the examination.

Course lecturers: Dr Kenneth Williams is the General Manager for Research at TUNRA Bulk Solids. He coordinates a wide spectrum of research projects and has been a part of the TBS team for over 10 years. Additionally, he is also the TBS Africa co-ordinator, working closely with the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg on developing services and solutions for the African mining, minerals processing and power industries. His main areas of expertise include the application of stress based analysis for the design of bulk material handling systems, the prediction and design of pneumatic conveying, fluidisation and air slide systems for dense and dilute phase flow, the prediction of wear in bulk material handling systems with focus on wear mechanisms as well as the investigation of DEM-CFD applications and their applicability and limitations for design. Dr Dusan Ilic is a Senior Consulting Engineer with TUNRA Bulk Solids and has operated as a materials handling consultant for over 10 years. In this period he has encountered a vast number of different bulk solid materials across a range of applications and industries. His main areas of expertise involve auditing, concept design, optimisation, numerical modelling and analysis of transfer systems (belt conveying). Other fields of proficiency include bulk solid flow property testing & characterisation, plant layout and 3D concept design, modelling of stockpiles and vessel live capacity. Current research interests include characterisation, handling and transportation of difficult ores and concentrates, development of transfer system design criteria including wear liner selection, and the control and management of dust. Ed Birtch holds a HND in Mechanical Engineering from the UK. He has over forty years of experience in bulk materials handling. He has worked extensively on small and multibillion rand mining projects as a designer, project engineer and project manager and has held other managerial positions in the bulk materials handling field. Ed is a consultant with TBSA, responsible, together with Dr August Lamos, for the development of the TBSA Laboratory, and for the engineering design on bulk solids flow design projects.
